CORONAVIRUS testing resources in the Valley are set to be bolstered significantly, with works underway to expand the operations of the Morwell Respiratory Clinic.

The clinic, located at the at The Healthcare Centre on Princes Drive, will likely scale-up from four dedicated testing rooms to six next week.

Practice manager Teddy Apostol said the move to open additional rooms

was fast-tracked due to recent calls for improved COVID-19 testing resources in the Latrobe Valley. “Because of this public outcry there’s this demand, so we need to get this done,� Mr Apostol told The Express. “But my aim is to open two more rooms some time next week.�

The Federal Department of Health confirmed it was working with the state government to enhance COVID-19 testing resources across Victoria, including at the Morwell Respiratory Clinic.

“The Morwell Respiratory Clinic ... has provided more than 4700 assessments since opening in mid-May,�a Department of Health spokesperson said. “The Commonwealth is supporting the Morwell Respiratory Clinic to manage its capacity, in line with the recent increase in patient demand, to ensure that the local community continues to have access to appropriate health care.�

Mr Apostol said the clinic would also be required to successfully complete a government video audit and walk-through

to ensure protocols are up to standards.

He said the four on-site clinicians were currently “maxed out�, and performing a combined 120 to 138 tests each day, but was hopeful the addition of two more doctors would help alleviate the pressure on staff. “We are just inundated with requests for tests at the moment,� he said. “Sometimes our clinicians are not taking their breaks because there’s an Continued on page 7

LRH deploys resources to assist at Bupa

LATROBE Regional Hospital is helping to support Bupa Traralgon as coronavirus cases rise at the aged care facility.

LRH COVID-19 coordinator Claire Kent said the hospital is providing a combination of clinical support, staffing support and educational support to the

home.

“Clinical support means that we are helping with the assessment of residents, so we have been going in or Zooming in every day for the last few weeks,” she said.

“We are providing help in identifying someone who needs treatments or if a transfer if required.

“LRH has run residential in-reach programs for a number of years, it is us reaching into residential aged care services - we are very much doing them on a regular basis.We cover all the aged care around the area but with Bupa it is much more frequent at the moment.”

Ms Kent has been the COVID-19 coordinator at LRH since March and

said the hospital is also providing staff to Bupa Traralgon where they need it. “(Bupa) have been struggling with workforce issues, with some staff who have contracted the virus. We have nurses providing help to them ... it’s a week-by-week proposition and hopefully their cases settle down soon,” she said.

“We have also offered further education of their staff to make sure that they have all the information they need with a smaller staff, so they Zoom in on education sessions twice a day.”

Sixteen cases of COVID-19 have been linked to Bupa Traralgon.

A METEOROLOGICAL mast at the site of the proposed Delburn wind farm has collapsed, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage.

OSMI Australia confirmed that the mast was vandalised and, as a result, collapsed in an uncontrolled manner.

OSMI director Peter Marriott said he was “incredibly disappointed” about the damage caused.

“We were notified through an internal system that the mast had failed and upon inspection it was clear that it had fallen to the ground, it was very evident that someone had damaged it,” he said.

“We haven’t had any acts of vandalism at Delburn, it had happened on other wind farm sites in the early 2000s when the industry was fairly

new, but not recently.”

Mr Marriott said he had not seen damage to this extent at a wind farm site before.

“We are measuring the wind conditions through other means, it’s a headache but it’s really not going to slow us down in production,” he said.

“We appeal to people (to) stay away as it is unsafe private property and if you have concerns come to us, via Zoom and people can have their say through the planning process.

There are legitimate ways of raising objections.”

OSMI is continuing with its plans to progress the project through the planning process, and if or when OSMI is to install a replacement mast, it will inform the community in advance.

Thompson said vandalism is “not on, putting people’s lives at risk is not part of our community ethic”.

In a statement SSF said “Unfortunately, this incident demonstrates that anti-wind misinformation and scaremongering can have potentially dangerous consequences”.

“We support the Delburn wind farm as a new source of renewable energy and the value of the Met Tower research data that assesses the wind resource,” it said.

Strzelecki Community Alliance - a group formed to oppose the Delburn wind farm - member Tash Blake said she did not think anyone in the group would vandalise the mast, putting their safety at risk.

“There was CCTV footage, so why are they pointing the finger at the anti windfarm people when they could just

show the footage? I think it needs to be released,” she said.

“The don’t really know what has caused it and a full investigation is to follow, but I can not see any of the locals doing anything so extreme.

We have already had some trouble with simple things like having our anti-wind farm banners taken down.

“There were high winds all week and ironically, it could have been the wind that knocked over the mast.

“In the SCA we are all for sustainable energy, just in the right place and the right way.”

Latrobe Crime Investigation Unit is investigating the collapse of the mast and believe it fell between August 5 and August 10.

MORWELL police have praised the behaviour of Latrobe residents, with only six penalty notices issued for breaches of mandatory mask-wearing since the policy came into effect on August 3.

Police have also handed out 31 penalty notices in the area for breaching pandemic restrictions since May. These breaches included the six mask infringements, as well as notices for gathering in public or being caught driving without a valid reason.

Morwell Senior Sergeant Dave Watson said police were using their discretion when issuing mask fines.

“Generally, 99 per cent of the community is being compliant and understand why these restrictions are in place and are following the rules,” Snr Sgt Watson told The Express.

“We are lenient to see if it’s deliberate or a mistake.

“We’ve been conducting a lot of special patrols to make sure restrictions are followed, and 31 penalties in a city the size of Latrobe is not a great deal, it shows general compliance.”

Snr Sgt Watson warned locals that police would continue to patrol for COVID-19 compliance and issue penalty notices where appropriate.

“Who knows how long this will last? We are all in this together, we need to make sure we follow restrictions to get rid of this virus,” he said.

“Hopefully it won’t be too long, but these conditions are in place to protect us.”

Safety is key for LGBTIQ community

MEMBERS of the Latrobe Valley’s LGBTIQ community need to feel psychologically safe before equality can be achieved, according to the latest report by the Latrobe Health Advocate.

Latrobe Health Advocate Jane Anderson launched her report Engagement Inspiration from LGBTIQ People in Latrobe in conjunction with VicHealth on Tuesday.

More than 150 people attended an online conference with Ms Anderson and several key speakers to hear the report findings and how engagement can be improved with the LGBTIQ community.

“What surprised me was that we are not at the stage of equality, we need to provide safety first. I learnt a lot from having conversations with people and what inclusion means for them,” Ms Anderson said.

“We certainly have more work to do, we need to build upon positive experiences and we need to listen to people in the LGBTIQ community.”

Ms Anderson spoke with members of the Valley’s LGBTIQ community to hear about health and wellbeing, strategies for better community engagement and equality.

She said people raised concerns around discrimination while accessing health or community services or dealing with organisations, the need for peer support and positive engagement.

Some cited being watched or questioned while using gendered toilets, while others reported they did not want to participate in surveys that asked for their gender identity or prefixes.

“It’s important to show people that they are listening, don’t judge and be aware of body language. Use a variety of ways to engage with people,” Ms Anderson said.

“We need services that are more accessible such as GP clinics, some people are put off using some services or organisations and this will inform their expectation of that service.”

Ms Anderson said organisations should work beyond a simple “rainbow tick” accreditation, and look at more meaningful inclusion.

She said Morwell internet provider Aussie Broadband was an example of being “welcoming and inclusive”.

Dr Demaio said a disproportionate number of LGBTIQ Australians experienced poorer mental health outcomes and have a higher risk of suicidal behaviours than their peers.

“These health outcomes are directly related to experiences of stigma, prejudice, discrimination and abuse.The valuable insights which Jane Anderson and the Latrobe Health Advocate team offer in this report can help people improve how they work with and support LGBTIQ+ communities,” he said.

Local contact tracing launched

LATROBE Regional Hospital established a contact tracing team on Monday to assist the state-wide effort to track and trace the spread of coronavirus in the local community.

The LRH team officially began contact tracing this week, however they had previously been helping Department of Health and Human Services with other prior local outbreaks.

LRH chief executive Peter Craighead said it was a small team of about 10 at the moment, but he expects more clinical and non-clinical staff to be trained.

the system being under pressure in Melbourne,” he said.

“We are also fortunate confirmed cases aren’t as high as they are in Melbourne at this point.”

The local team is being supported

by Barwon Health which is helping regional hospitals set up tracing teams and train staff.

LRH staff recently undertook the Barwon training program and they are now training other clinical and non-clinical staff at the hospital.

“While some of the team are responsible for tracing, others monitor the condition of confirmed local cases with the support of an infectious diseases specialist and physicians,” Mr Craighead said.

of confidentiality in the gathering of personal information and “the tracing team is mindful of that”.

“However, we know that in some cases where there is a risk to the wider community DHHS will decide to release details about the movements of a confirmed case,” he said.

Mr Craighead said contact tracing was being done collaboratively with Gippsland health services.

LRH issued an expression of interest for clinical and non-clinical staff in the region to join the team, and smaller teams will be set up at other hospitals in the region as required.

understand their movements and who they may have been in contact with.

“And then it’s a matter of piecing together what can be a very big puzzle to determine who and how many people may be at risk,” Mr Craighead said.

“The information that is gathered may lead to further testing of a workplace or even a community, for example the testing blitz in Orbost recently following a local outbreak.

“Hospitals across Gippsland are setting up rapid response teams to do this work.”

Mr Craighead said this information was then passed on to the DHHS after which the department would hand out advice on taking future action.

Those linked to aged care facility Bupa Traralgon were at 16, a spokesperson confirmed when The Express went to print last night, with a staff member, resident and two agency staff this week adding to the tally.

Lavalla Catholic College closed both its campuses this week after two students, who were last on site on August 3, tested positive for the virus.

In a letter circulated to the school community on Monday night, the college confirmed it had closed both its campuses for “an environmental clean”.

“Dear Parents, Guardians, Carers and Students, I am writing to advised that we have been advised that there are two confirmed COVID-19 cases in the school community,” Principal John Freeman said.

“As a consequence, both campuses are now closed for an environmental clean.

“The college is liaising closely with Diocese of Sale Catholic Education Limited (DOSCEL), the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Department of Education and Training (DET).

“We are strictly following guidelines from these bodies. Therefore, until further notice no one will be allowed on either campus.”

TAFE Gippsland’s Yallourn campus reopened yesterday after a commercial clean following a positive COVID-19 case last week.

Eighty is a cakewalk for Aunty Margot

MARGOT Whelan is not slowing down as she approaches her 80th birthday, even baking cookies during her interview with The Express.

The well-known caterer said she has become accustomed to being affectionately referred to as ‘Aunty Margot’ to many across the Latrobe Valley.

“I am used to being Aunty Margot to everyone now, my niece was a teacher at Churchill and rang me up for a recipe for cream puffs and she said to her form ‘say hello to Aunty Margot’, and they all did,” she said.

“I have run into people on the street and they also call me that; I’m used to it.”

Ms Whelan is turning 80 on Sunday and said she does not feel her age.

“It’s a bit hard to believe that I’m going to be 80, I’m too young to be 80 I tell myself,” she said.

“I refuse to get old, I’m not doing it yet. People ask me when I’m going to retire and I say ‘when I get grey hair and wrinkles’, and I have just a little bit of grey hair and not too many wrinkles yet.

“I am the king of my own castle, only death and taxes will stop me. I’m from a family of eight kids, four of them have left this earth and I am the eldest of them all. You have to be grateful to be here and I love what I’m doing, I am not a sitting down person.

“It’s a shame I can’t see everyone, but what can you do?

I told my family that I would be 80 for the whole year so maybe we will have to celebrate for

Easter. “I can’t use a computer to attempt a Skype, so I expect I will be receiving many calls on Sunday from the family.”

While she spoke Ms Whelan filled chocolate cookies with jam, which she called her latest “invention”.

“During the first lockdown I started experimenting with things, I started making things like vanilla slices, cream puffs and stupid things because I could, you have to keep doing something,” she said.

Ms Whelan has been catering for around 40 years, selling delicious baked goods from her home and catering funerals and rotary club meetings.

“I am totally inexperienced, I learnt through what I tell people is trial and error. I sold the trial and I ate the error,” she said.

“I raised six kids amongst it all and people meet me in the supermarket and ask if I remember them, and I say, ‘yes, a wedding at Tyers hall’, and this actually happened to me last week and the wedding was 29 years ago, but I don’t do catering to big weddings anymore.

“People are looking for homemade food with no preservatives and no additives and I don’t use any of that, it’s just butter and egg, and honestly I don’t really know what preservatives are.

“Butter is absolutely my biggest expenditure, I used to have to sell a tray of cakes to buy the butter when the kids were little, but (the business) has just grown.”

“There have been times a family of three or four come in to get tested but only book one appointment, so you’ll be delayed by an hour.

“We try to accommodate as much as we can, but we still have to give our clinicians breaks or they’ll get sick.”

Mr Apostol said samples are picked up from the clinic twice a day, with results currently taking between two and five days to process at off-site labs.

He said there was understandably a lot of frustration involved with extended waiting times, but maintained resourcing at the clinic was limited “because of government budgets”.

John finds happiness in the gift of giving

JOHN Van Berkel has endured a tough year but his heart of gold has not lost its shine.

The 75-year-old, who is now retired but worked as a carpenter, decided two years ago to embark on a new creative philanthropic venture. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This whole project got started about two years ago, me and my little wife Maureen, we thought we would do something to keep ourselves busy,â&#x20AC;? Mr Van Berkel said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had retired and we would normally go to Yeppoon for the winter, grey-haired nomads, but I got crook so we thought â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;what can we do in the winter time?â&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;&#x153;So I traded in my cordless drill for a sewing machine.â&#x20AC;?

With spare time to burn, the Van Berkels got to work on an altruistic project to benefit some very special little people. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We decided to make some rabbits for the kids at the hospital and we made about 2000 of these,â&#x20AC;? Mr Van Berkel said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I would make them and Maureen would do all the stuffing, stuff the legs, stuff the body and attach the eyes, and we did this for about 18 months.â&#x20AC;?

Maureen sadly died about two months ago, but Mr Van Berkel was determined to keep their joint legacy afloat. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I thought â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll keep the rabbits going in honour of Maureenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, but my fingers are too big and I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do the stuffing in the little arms,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I thought â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;now, what am I going to be doingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m on my own, to pass the time of day, especially now in lockdown I thought I would make some masks because I had quite a bit of material

left over.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Van Berkel has turned to crafting face masks, which hang on a line out the front of his Traralgon home, free to take for passers-by in need. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With my little stuffer not with us anymore I thought I would keep my sewing machine going and make the masks, and why not just give them away?â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It gives something to someone else, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fine, I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mind at all. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The hard part is getting the elastic at the moment. I enjoy it, it kills time, it keeps me busy and if someone else gets a benefit out of it, terrific.â&#x20AC;?

Mask-making is a time-consuming and fiddly process, but Mr Van Berkelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sewing skills havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always been up to the test. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I started sewing about two years ago everything was zig-zagged,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d try to sew a straight line and it would still be zig-zagged but I caught on reasonably quick, just donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ask me to sew a button on or button holes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have just sent some (masks) to my granddaughter who is at the National University in Canberra, and because they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have any rules on masks but she is keen on wearing one, she is trying to get her professors to wear them as well. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I just sent a dozen masks to Canberra this morning so theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re now going interstate.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Van Berkel has so far churned out and given away about 100 face masks and many more lemons from his thriving tree. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I put them out the front and away they go,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The lemon tree has been very fruitful this year so for every mask, they take a handful of lemons. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What a way to get rid of the lemons.â&#x20AC;?

THE Boolarra Folk Festival will move online next year as organisers make plans to stream the twoday event to allow it to proceed in the pandemic.

Boolarra Folk Festival president Rick Teychenne said this was a major change to how the awardwinning festival had been operating in the past 18 years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;COVID-19 in our world has made it impossible to hold our regular outdoor festival in 2021,â&#x20AC;? Mr Teychenne said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Boolarra Folk Festival committeeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision to change the format for 2021 is all about the safety of our audiences and communities.â&#x20AC;?

The 2021 event will feature regular festival musicians and will be hosted by a â&#x20AC;&#x153;special and well-knownâ&#x20AC;? presenter.

The virtual festival will support musicians, video, sound and lighting engineers, as they have not been able to work due to COVID-19.

The committee will also look at innovative ways to promote the market stall holders and community groups which have also been a major part of the festival.

Mr Teychenne said the committee decided to forge ahead after the Melbourne Jazz, Melbourne Comedy and Morwell International Rose festivals went virtual this year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We thought we could do this as well,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Keeping music live during these tough times is important for our health and wellbeing, and we need to assist our communities and musicians by presenting a new approach. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It will be really exciting to explore new ways of developing next yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s festival, and we will learn a lot from other festivals that are using similar approaches.â&#x20AC;?

The Boolarra Folk Festival will be held on February 27, 2021.

Partnership puts jobs front and centre

TAFE Gippsland, the Skills and Jobs Centre, Baw Baw Latrobe LLEN and Maxima are working together on a program being referred to as TSEP (TAFE Specialist Employment Partnerships).

Of the 4.1 million students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training nationally, more than 32,000 of them study and live with a disability.

Many of these TAFE students are not supported with their job search until they have completed their studies, and evidence indicates there is a significant positive impact on achieving career goals if an individual is taking steps before they finish their studies.

Skills and Jobs Centre Manager Owen Chapman said the TSEP program aims to give students support with their job search before they complete their studies. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This collaboration is a fantastic opportunity for our students to get access to a specialist disability recruitment consultant to help achieve their career goals,â&#x20AC;? Mr Chapman said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The program will involve regular updates and active engagement with the students, as well as the option for students to be introduced to potential employers prior to their graduation.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Chapman said the collaboration involves Maxima team members working out of four TAFE Gippsland campuses and supporting students with a disability to transition from training to employment at the conclusion of completing their qualification. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re so proud of this collaboration and canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wait to see it kick off in August this year,â&#x20AC;? he said.

The program commences in mid-August at Leongatha, Warragul, Morwell and Bairnsdale.

World-first for Heyfield timber mill

The first step was to research the market.

“You have to listen to the market and give it what it wants,” Mr Hurley said.

The company had already done columns and beams in small end sections, such as at Margaret Court Arena.

Building on its experience in Europe and China,“we were able to learn how to make a line that can produce these mass timber products in one pass”, Mr Hurley said - unlike Europe, which makes mass timber products in two passes and then joins them together to make a bigger single product.

“We have made a specially designed four-sided planer that can do 450 millimetres deep by 1300 mm wide, which is the biggest four-sided planer in the

world,” he said.

“We were the first to build a planer 450mm deep.”

The biggest beams and columns are 1300mm by 450mm.

The big Hundegger CNC machine means all the MASSLAM products, complete with any detail, are manufactured at Heyfield.

“You don’t have to do anything on site, other than put the meccano set together,” Mr Hurley said.

The pieces are craned into position.

MASSLAM’s columns and beams match perfectly with CLT, which is generally used in ceilings and floors, and sometimes walls.

ASH’s emphasis is on appearance grade.

The ASH plant has now nine different departments, of which six are manufacturing, with MASSLAM the latest.

The Hundegger line cost $12 million.

To replace the two factories and equipment bought over the past 13-14 years would cost close to $28 million.

AUSTRALIAN Sustainable Hardwoods (ASH) at Heyfield has developed innovative hardwood-engineered products that are a world-first, positioning itself as a major presence in Australia’s rapidly growing mass timber market.

Engineered wood - where traditional planks of wood are glued together under high pressure to create a product as strong as steel - is expected to play an increasing role in construction, particularly in buildings of medium height.

Landmark engineered wood buildings in Melbourne have used European native forest softwood, but ASH now manufactures large engineered Victorian Ash hardwood columns and beams in a single production process.

The company uses the largest CNC (computer controlled) German Hundegger machinery.

The products, a form of glue-laminated timber dubbed MASSLAM, are up to 12 metres long.

The process gives ASH ‘more bang for its Ash buck’.

The company has just completed a number of large MASSLAM projects including one at the University of Tasmania in Burnie.

Ten other projects are confirmed, with others in the pipeline.

The timber packages alone are worth between $100,000 and $4 million each.

The mass timber market in Australia has been served from Europe, but local company X-Lam’s cross-laminated timber (CLT) factory in Albury-Wodonga and ASH are changing that.

CLT panels are made with planks criss-crossed at right angles and glued under pressure.

“We recognised the huge gap in domestic production,” ASH managing director Vince Hurley said.

ASH built on its existing strengths - finger jointing, laminating and huge experience with polyurethane adhesives - to recreate the business several years

mostly done in softwood, but ASH is the only company also doing Glulam in hardwood.

“The advantages are incredible.

MASSLAM has a 40-45 per cent strength advantage over European spruce (a softwood),” Mr Hurley said.

“You can carry 40 per cent more load, or make the columns and beams 40 per cent smaller, to carry the same load.”

The company’s total employment is now 170.

“We went from 245 down to 140, then built back to 170 through reshaping the whole business. That’s not bad, considering what it could have been,” Mr Hurley said.

ASH processes up to 90,000 cubic metres of wood annually, most supplied from VicForests.

Nature Kinder program a hit at St Paul’s

STUDENTS are thoroughly enjoying the newly-developed playground at St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School’s Early Learning Centre.

During the school holidays, the grounds of the centre were redeveloped into a wonderland of nature that is designed to allow students to experience a play area founded on an exploration through play in a natural environment, ‘loose play’, and an opportunity to collaborate, gather, socialise with other children, teachers, parents and the community.

The redevelopment coincides with the ELC’s Nature Kinder program which supports the St Paul’s ELC’s overall philosophy of promoting learning through play, and embraces the ability of children to explore, create, problem-solve, collaborate and imagine.

Through the Nature Kinder program, children are given opportunities to connect to nature within a holistic approach.

Brand new: The newly-developed playground at the St Paul’s ELC is one aspect of the school grounds that will be used for the Nature Kinder program.

Taking place in outdoor spaces within the school grounds, the children are able to explore trees, bushes, dirt, sticks, seeds and mud, enabling them to use their imaginative and creative skills through play-based education on a weekly basis.

Children benefit from the

It includes a water play area with water pump and mud pit, climbing areas, sandpit, raised ramp, an Indigenous food garden, and vegetable and herb garden.

Are we all in this together, Mr Premier?

IN a much-neglected passage of ‘Animal Farm’, Orwell allowed Moses the raven, long the croaking propagandist of a heavenly Shangri La beyond the skies, to return to the farm and preach to the more gullible creatures after Napoleon had driven out Snowball.

With Snowball out of the way, Napoleon imposes his solitary rule with the help of a group of savage dogs, and slowly, one by one, the Seven Commandments of Animalism become perverted or eliminated, until at last painted on the barn door appears only one sentence: “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”

Moral: To prove his sincerity and integrity, if and until Daniel Andrews legislates a 20 per cent wage cut to his yearly salary of $441,000 (which still leaves him $350,000-plus per year, which is $350,000 more than the hundreds of thousands of Victorian small business that have been forced to close), his much-repeated mantra of “We are all in this together” will ring false.

What’s in a name?

SCANNING through the minutes of the Latrobe City Council meeting from Monday night there is an interesting motion passed that has renamed Ted Summerton Reserve in Moe and the Morwell Recreation Reserve to now become the Gippsland Regional Cricket Centre of Excellence and the Gippsland Regional AFL Centre of Excellence.

Hang about, aren’t these venues also AFL and netball in Ted Summerton’s case and cricket, netball and croquet at the Morwell Recreation Reserve?

Latrobe City values respect and listening to the community.

I have not seen any discussion anywhere about respecting all the sports at these venues or a chance for any community feedback.

Indeed on page 271 of the agenda it is noted that there may be the opportunity for some community members to voice their disapproval, either in the proposed name/brand, but also that they were not given an opportunity to have their input, with one of the risk factors listed that Latrobe

City’s reputation is at risk for such a change.

What sort of council are we dealing with here? This is appalling.

There is notably no images of the changes at these two venues in the later listed promotion for the change, only the other name changes which are more respectable as the other name changes are respectful of all sports that take place at each venue.

Listening to the councillors, it’s like cricket is the only important sport at Ted Summerton and AFL is the only sport at the Morwell Recreation Reserve, and how important it is to recognise these centres of excellence.

I would suggest getting people back participating in sport will be far more important than centres of excellence recognition once this pandemic is over.

Cricket Victoria have also already sacked the staff that were meant to be housed at Moe and got rid of the Gippsland cricket teams that were meant to be based there, and who knows what will come of Gippsland Power and AFL Victoria staff in the future as well, given these entities are not community driven.

No doubt the Moe Football Netball Club and the Morwell Cricket Club have survived world wars, depressions and the previous pandemic.

Councillors talk about a vision for Latrobe City being one of four regional cities, and try to compare with Geelong and Ballarat.

Both of these cities have AFL venues next to railway stations with huge parking available next to those venues, which neither Ted Summerton or Morwell Recreation Reserve have, as both are land locked and can’t really be much more than what they are.

This shows a complete lack of vision, respect to the Latrobe City community, Latrobe City’s values and participants at grassroots sports.

MP’s comments strike a chord

IN early 1942 Australia was facing a real threat of invasion.

Darwin and the top end had been bombed and New Guinea was in danger of falling.

The Pacific War was right at our doorstep.

The Australian Government recalled the 6th and 7th Divisions who were fighting in the Middle East - they were urgently needed at home to defend our country.

And so the battle arena changed from the sands of the Middle East to the Jungle of New Guinea; our fight was now close to home.

Around this time Singapore fell to the Japanese and most of the 8th Division were captured - one in three died on the infamous Thai-Burma Railway.

The 9th Division ‘Rats of Tobruk’ were disappointed to find that they were not homeward bound with the 6th and 7th, but finally joined in the defence of Australia in July 1943.

Japanese mini submarines had made a series of attacks on Sydney Harbour and Newcastle, and so real was the perceived threat of impending invasion that many schoolaged children were sent to stay in rural areas.

The outcome could have been entirely different if the Japanese had not attacked Pearl Harbour in December 1941.

This attack resulted in the American Navy engaging the Japanese in the “Battle of the Coral Sea”.

It has been suggested that the Battle of Midway and Guadalcanal were the turning point in the Pacific War - the first clear victory over Japan, and one that may have saved Australia from invasion.

What it certainly did do, was stop the Japanese from their intended landing at Port Moresby on the south coast.

The Japanese planned to capture strategically positioned Moresby as it was a control point for the Coral Sea and South Pacific Ocean, and also served as a spring board for a potential invasion.

Instead, they turned their attention to Rabaul on the north-eastern tip of the island of New Britain and began an advance towards Port Moresby overland along the Kokoda Track.

They got within eye sight 50kms - of Port Moresby and retreated.

We were never going to let them take Moresby - fighting bravely, Australian troops held firm.

New Guinea was a long, hard, bitterly-fought battle for our Diggers.

How did they ever manage

to climb those mountains with full packs, rifles, artillery and in constant danger?

The jungle, the mud, river crossings, battling the weather, malaria and the list goes on and on.

But our boys fought on with courage and determination; always with their mates at their back and the fuzzy wuzzy angels at their side.

No Digger would ever let his mates down.

They fought with a determination driven by the knowledge that they were defending Australia and with all they loved waiting at home - we were never going to lose.

And finally, August 15, 1945 the Japanese surrendered unconditionally and for Australians it meant the war was finally over.

For many, their boys would be coming home, for others there would be an empty place at the table.

When the news broke people ran into the streets singing and dancing, strangers hugging each other.

It was one of those days that everyone remembered exactly what they were doing and how they felt. The war was finally over!

We still remember, particularly on Anzac Day, where in days gone by we would see the unspoken but unbreakable bond that our Diggers shared; a special mateship and camaraderie.

The warm handshakes, the

pleasure of seeing old mates, the sorrow when a well-known face was missing.

I remember a time when the ranks were full of strong, proud men who had shared something we would never understand.

A respect based on shared experiences, humour and a sense of belonging.

Many went to war with the mind of a soldier but the heart and soul of a mate.

Time passed and the ranks thinned and I would look at these old men and wonder how they were ever going to make it to the Shrine.

It’s a long march for old legs from the centre of the city to the Shrine.

But then something special would happen - we would line up behind the banner, the men chatting and calling to each other and then the band appeared to lead the battalion and you could see the change.

Old shoulders would go back, heads held high as they swung into step and marched all the way to the Shrine.

The faces told the story - they were thinking of their mates and remembering and honouring the boys who had not made it home.

On the August 15, 1995 my son Rhys and I were proud to have been asked to march for Dad in the ‘Australia Remembers Parade’ to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Victory in the Pacific.

Dad was 6th Division 2/7th Battalion, good old ‘Mud over Blood’.

It was so different, and as we headed up Swanston Street in the opposite direction to the Shrine the general feeling was one of celebration, thanksgiving and pride.

Crowds were cheering, people hanging out of windows throwing streamers and ticker tape and it gave some small insight into the celebrations of 1945.

In the veterans I could see pride - pride that so many were acknowledging their contribution.

It was a totally wonderful, unforgettable day.

It has been said that the best means of ensuring peace is to acknowledge our past history and we can never really be sure of our future until we understand our past.

As Darren Chester rightly pointed out - so many of us do have a connection to the war and a family history just waiting to be revealed.

Now is an ideal time to start looking and what a wonderful legacy for future generations and a perfect lockdown project.

Possibly best summed up in the words of Czeslaw Milosz when he said: “The living owe it to those who no longer can speak to tell their story for them”.

Now is a perfect time for you to speak for your family and let their stories be heard.

Free kinder for Term 3

VICTORIAN kinder will be free for Term 3 thanks to a relief package designed to support early childhood services through the pandemic.

Education Minister James Merlino this week announced an extension to the free sessional kinder support and a further $1.6 million in grants, which will be available via the Australian-first School Readiness Funding program for kindergartens to help deliver early childhood education to children learning at home.

Kinders can use the extra funding to access a range of online programs containing highquality play-based learning activities for parents to do with their children at home.

Sessional kinders in regional and rural areas can also now access support for unfunded three-year-old kindergarten programs.

The funding will be available for not-forprofit services, including community-based, local government and school providers that are offering sessional programs and are not already receiving JobKeeper payments.

The government will also provide any funded kindergarten service directed to close due to a confirmed COVID-19 case with extra funding to undertake an infectious clean before re-opening.

This is in addition to cleaning grants worth between $900 and $1500 that have been offered to all services delivering a funded kinder program.

This additional funding is part of an up to $45 million support package for sessional kindergarten providers during the coronavirus pandemic. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our early childhood staff do a remarkable job day in and day out ensuring Victorian children continue to get the care and education they need during this challenging period,â&#x20AC;?

Learning about dementia

GIPPSLAND Primary Health Network is working with Monash University to learn more about dementia in Gippsland.

People in Gippsland who are affected by dementia are invited to take part in an interview or a group discussion to share their experiences.

The information gathered will inform the ongoing Gippsland PHN Health Needs Assessment and commissioning of services by Gippsland PHN. Population Health Planning is a core function of Gippsland PHN and CEO Amanda Proposch said hearing from the community directly was important to helping Gippsland PHN improve the health and wellbeing of people across the region.

A new â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Tell Gippsland PHNâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; website has been developed to engage the community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We rely on information from people in Gippsland to help us work on what is needed most,â&#x20AC;? Ms Proposch said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Gippsland PHN does not deliver direct services; instead, our job is to make the health system work better, especially for people who find it hard to access the help they need.â&#x20AC;?

Dementia is the first topic on the Tell Gippsland PHN website and the Health Planning team will consider all the information provided.

Dementia affects many people in Gippsland, including over 40 per cent of people in aged care homes.

It is the second most common cause of death for females in Gippsland after cardiovascular disease.

An improved understanding of dementia in the community and among professionals can make living with dementia easier. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We will publish summary information on the Tell Gippsland PHN website from time to time to let people know what we have learnt and how the information they have provided

Campaign assesses COVID-19 cost

THE Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) has conducted a national campaign to help it determine the impact of COVID-19 on community sport across the country and found Australia’s 70,000 community sports clubs need funding support to the tune of $1.2 billion to survive the effects of the crisis.

Community sports clubs have already lost an estimated $1.6 billion to date due to COVID-19 and with lockdowns continuing in parts of Australia and sport still in jeopardy, this figure is set to rise.

Alarmingly the survey revealed that over 16,000 (approx. one quarter) of community sports clubs nationally are thought to be at risk of closure if funding support isn’t provided within the next six months.

On top of the financial impact, 70 per cent of small local clubs are forecasting a reduction in the number of participants due to loss of interest caused by the period of inactivity and/or concerns around health and hygiene, while 43 per cent forecast a decline in volunteers,

which are so vital to the running of community sport.

“Our survey shows that without financial support thousands of community clubs risk insolvency in the months ahead which presents a real risk to the physical and mental health of our communities,”Australian Sports Foundation chief executive officer Patrick Walker said.

“This is not just a sporting crisis, but a national crisis.

“And the return to sporting activity, whenever it happens, does not mean the crisis is over - indeed, it is just beginning.

“To solve a problem of this scale requires a collaborative approach, so we are calling on all who care about the role of sport in creating healthy, inclusive communities to help us fund grassroots sport’s recovery.”

The survey revealed: ■ Most main sources of revenue ceased or declined (with up to 80% of clubs reporting declines in one or more of memberships, sponsorships, fundraising and events/hospitality)

■ 91 per cent of Small Local Clubs (an estimated 42,600 clubs around Australia) recording ongoing expenses such as utility bills, affiliation fees, maintenance and rent ■ 93 per cent of all clubs lost money due to ongoing expenses coupled with the loss in revenue ■ Losses were funded by clubs drawing down on savings or going into debt.

The survival of thousands of clubs is under threat if financial support is not provided quickly as responses to the survey also showed that community clubs have little in the way of capital or cash reserves with over half of all clubs reporting less than six months funds available, and one quarter citing insolvency risk as one of their major challenges.

“Our task now is to help community sport survive COVID-19. Having highlighted the unfolding crisis, and now quantified the scale of the problem, we want to work with Australia’s

political, philanthropic and corporate leaders - and everyone who cares about the role community sport plays in our way of life - to help solve the issue,” Mr Walker said.

While the funding needed to support each club through the resumption and the months that follow is relatively small, in aggregate the funding required is significant at $1.2bn.

For the most at risk clubs - those needing support within three months - the amount needed is estimated at $300m, with a further $400m of support for those at risk within six months.

No one stakeholder will underwrite this cost, so a co-ordinated approach is needed - but the much-needed money needs to be raised and distributed to clubs in need within the next six months to avert a national crisis.

“Community sports clubs face multiple challenges in the months and years ahead, including reduced revenues and increased costs, together with pressures on the affordability of sport for participants, and projected declines

in volunteers due to health concerns,” Mr Walker said.

“These clubs are about more than the sport itself - they are the lifeblood of communities all over Australia. They are made up of individuals who pay utility bills, shop at supermarkets and fill up at petrol stations.They are not the top end of town, but need support from this sector and the whole philanthropic community if we are to avoid the loss of thousands of clubs and the widespread social dislocation that would follow.”

The national survey started on May 20 and was open for five weeks and asked respondents for detailed information on how the COVID-19 crisis has affected community sports clubs, its participants and its volunteers.

The survey collected 4337 responses from 4127 unique organisations and covered more than 100 different sport types from the mainstream like football, netball and cricket, to sports with only one or two respondents, like carriage driving and pickleball.

Government sport support tops $12 million THE state government is supporting state sport associations, state sport and recreation bodies and regional academies get through the pandemic with support from the Community Sport Sector COVID-19 Survival Package.

Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence on Tuesday announced more than $12.7 million in grants had been approved as part of the $40 million package for the sport and active recreation sector.

Almost 70 organisations have been awarded grants under this stream of the package, including Netball Victoria, AFL Victoria, Riding for the Disabled Association of Victoria, Football Victoria and Gippsland Regional Sports Academy.

The grants will help major sport and active recreation organisations keep going in the wake of the necessary cancellation of training, development programs and competition.

Funding will help organisations continue to operate safely, support member clubs and participants and assist with the development of Return to Play plans to reactivate their sports as coronavirus restrictions are gradually eased.

More than three million Victorians are involved in community sport and recreation, with 12,000 clubs and associations across the state, but the sector has suffered significant revenue losses since the onset of the pandemic.

More than 5000 clubs have already received $1000 grants as part of the package, along with 200 leagues and associations which have shared in almost $1.5 million in funding.

“These grants will provide vital funds for the organisations that support grassroots clubs and associations across the state - the bodies that make it possible for millions of Victorians to play the sports they love,” Ms Spence said.

“This much needed support will help keep the doors open of our state sporting associations and the people they employ in work.”

Currie eyes Supersport Championships MOTORSPORT

GIPPSLAND’S Ben Currie didn’t have the best start to the new season in the British Supersport Championships.

Racing at Donington Park, the 25-year-old from Glengarry didn’t finish the first race due to mechanical issues.

Currie then placed seventh in the second race with two time penalties after starting from the back of the grid with more technical problems.

He said his bike was cutting out before the race began, then didn’t perform at

its best on the track.

Currie races with the Kawasaki team and his support crew will have some quick mechanical work to do before round two.

That will be at the Snetterton 300 Circuit in Norfolk on August 21-23.

The start of the British Supersport Championships was delayed by four months due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Currie went into the shortened season with a great deal of confidence and says he will work hard to make the most of the remaining five rounds.

“Unfortunately the weekend was far from alright with only a six round championship,” he said.

“We need to pull it together real fast ready for round two next weekend. Meanwhile I’ll just keep putting in the work.”

This year Currie has returned to British Supersport Championships for 600cc bikes where he competed two years ago.

In 2019 he was in the higher class British Superbikes where he suffered a major foot injury that sidelined him for much of the season.

British Supersport Championships modified season 2020: R1 - Donington Park, August 7-9.

R2 - Snetterton 300, August 21-23.

R3 - Silverstone National, September 4-6.

R4 - Oulton Park, September 18-20.

R5 - Donington Park GP, October 2-4.

R6 - Brands Hatch GP, October 16-18.

Poelsma the timeless running phenomenon Soccer Club for a number of years, many as assistant coach and captain.

In 1965 he won the best and fairest award for the Latrobe Valley competition, and was regarded as a central figure during the club’s successful years.

And after a break of a short few years John returned in 1968 to run the inaugural Traralgon Marathon, perhaps inspired by the historic occasion. He was 64 years of age.

The Express reported, “The youngest runner to complete the course, 17-year-old Chris Collins of Traralgon, ran 3.26.47, while the oldest entrant, John (Joe) Poelsma of Moe, aged 64 clocked 3.50.11”.

Wild, wet and windy in May

Icon: John ‘Joe’ Poelsma was often spotted running the streets of Newborough and Yallourn.

“The Canadian army played a major role in the liberation of the Dutch people who had suffered terrible hunger and hardship under German occupation.

“Some of the Canadians stationed in our town came to dad’s boxing evenings. They told him all about Canada and urged him to emigrate.

“Dad started to seriously think about it. But later Canada repealed their immigration act.”

As a marathon runner in the Netherlands, John hated the cold, Corrie said, and even doing training runs in his track suit he said he couldn’t get warm - this was part of his motivation for moving to a warmer climate.

“Dad then started to think about Australia. He left for Australia in 1952. When he arrived in Melbourne he sought employment with the army,” he said.

“He was informed that he was too old. I don’t know whether there was an interpreter present as dad could not speak English, but he told them he was prepared to demonstrate his abilities by ‘taking on’ two of their best soldiers at the same time.

“He was promptly told that it would not alter his age of 48.”

Josephine and the children, aged from two to 17, followed across the next year.

John had gained employment at the State Electricity Commission at Yallourn, and they moved into an SEC home in Newborough.

John was a still a keen runner and became involved in the creation of the Newborough Athletics Club, and later joined the Yallourn Amateur Athletics Club, becoming its president, and also the club coach.

He was also an instructor at

the Youth Club at Yallourn, and mentored a number of the young people to embrace other sports.

Despite his aversion to the cold, in mid-winter 1956 John ran his first Australian marathon. It followed the future Melbourne Olympics course to Clayton and return, starting and finishing at the MCG. He finished in sixth place ahead of other noted Gippsland runners Geoff Watt and Jim Willis. The Olympic marathon a few months later saw many runners drop out in the 30-plus degrees December heat.

Between those two marathons, in November 1956 prior to the Melbourne Olympics, John competed in a 32-kilometre wheelbarrow race, no doubt motivated by his eclectic sporting interests.

The Sentinel Times headline screamed, “Wheelbarrow Derby to 52-year-old father-of-eight”.

“Fifty-two-year-old, father-ofeight children, John Poelsma, of East Newborough, won the Poowong to Korumburra 20-mile wheelbarrow derby by about a mile from last year’s winner John MacDonnell. Poelsma who came to Australia from Holland three years ago is an employee of the S.E.C. and was a marathon runner in his homeland”, The Times declared.

It also noted that John was a former marathon champion of the northern Netherlands.

John then ran one or two marathons each year for a dozen years, including a sixth place behind Geoff Watt in 1958, and a silver medal in 1959, both in the South Australian championships.

IN its second year in 1969 the Traralgon Marathon was moved to late May and was run in blizzard conditions.

The Traralgon Journal wrote that the extremely cold and wet conditions took a heavy toll.

Only 14 of the 26 starters finished and the last runners waded through floodwaters washing over the Traralgon Creek bridge in Franklin Street.

“Jim Crawford and the ageless John Poelsma also finished their second Traralgon Marathons”, The Journal reported.

John’s running companion and friendly nemesis Geoff Watt was one of the 14 finishers, an hour slower than the previous year, due to the horrific conditions.

Sadly this was Geoff’s last Traralgon Marathon as he died of exposure on a training run on snow-covered Mount Erica three months later, in September 1969.

Later that year John joined the Professional Cross-country Club.

According to Corrie there was discussion at the Yallourn Club about some of the younger members becoming discouraged by being defeated in competition by ‘an old bloke’.

“They urged him to retire, and stick to coaching. But competing was in his blood so he left the Yallourn club and joined the Cross-country club”, Corrie said.

John continued to compete in many local events of varying distances. He had won the Latrobe Valley Amateur Athletics Association mile walk every year from 1964 to 1968, but ran no further marathons - until 1978.

Perhaps again enticed by his sense of history, this time it was the inaugural Melbourne Marathon, 10 years younger than its country cousin, the Traralgon Marathon.

Only a few people ran both the first Traralgon and the first Melbourne marathons. John was one of them. No woman ran both, as the inaugural Traralgon Marathon was an all-male event.

John ran his final Melbourne marathon in 1982, aged 78, in the commendable time of 4:35:53, and over the years was often the oldest male runner in the field.

When John was awarded a medal in the 1980 Sun Super Run as the oldest competitor, then aged 75, he remarked, “My body is so used to exercise that I can’t stop. Old or young, there is no excuse for sitting at home”.

BACK in the mid and late 1900s - which seems so long ago now - Latrobe Valley locals who lived or worked near Newborough or Yallourn would often see a man running down the road in the middle of nowhere - a more uncommon sight then than now.

It was John ‘Joe’ Poelsma, a press operator with the SEC at Yallourn, running from his Newborough home to work at Yallourn, or the reverse at the end of his shift. And he did it for many years.

John Poelsma was born in the city of Leeuwarden in the Netherlands just after the start of the previous century, in 1904.

From nine years of age until his early teens he experienced the horrors of the First World War, as it affected his country.

The Netherlands clung desperately to its neutrality with the Dutch army guarding its borders, but still suffered many restrictions and shortages.

One million refugees from neighbouring Belgium escaped to John’s country and 80,000 remained during all of the war years.

Perhaps as a distraction from the memories of war, John became immersed in physical activities.

His son Corrie said John, in his late-20s, established a boxing and athletics club in Leeuwarden, giving lessons in physical education, athletics and jiu jitsu.

He wrote a manual about self-defence for the police force and also instructed the police in various defence techniques and boxing.

Corrie said, “He also gave boxing lessons on the third floor of our house where he had erected a boxing ring. Several large mirrors were placed along one wall, for shadow boxing I guess. He also organised cross country running events and marathons”.

John was recognised as a champion amateur middleweight boxer, and a top level runner.

But in his mid-30s and married to Josephine, he and his people then confronted the agony of the Second World War. Corrie said, “Germany invaded the Netherlands and our country was placed under the control of a German governor.

The long-term aim of the Nazis was to incorporate the Netherlands into the Greater German Reich.

“Drafting of civilians for forced labour was imposed, with every man between 18 and 45 to work in German factories, which were regularly bombed by the Allies,” Corrie said.

“The men in our town were forced to present themselves to the German authorities at the town square. After much deliberation with mum he decided to present himself as mentally disabled, with one arm in a sling and with a pronounced limp.

“He remonstrated with the Germans that he must get home to the farm as there was no one else to do the milking. The Germans laughed and stamped his papers as being unsuitable for labour.

“Two of dad’s brothers were not so fortunate. One died in a German factory during an explosion and another brother was shot dead one evening during curfew.
