LATROBE City’s nine newly-elected councillors were officially sworn in on Tuesday evening after local government election results were declared on Monday.

Two new faces were welcomed into Latrobe City which now doubles the number of women on council, with the

election of Tracie Lund in Central Ward and Melissa Ferguson in South Ward.

Other successful candidates included returning Central Ward councillor Graeme Middlemiss and West Ward returning incumbents Sharon Gibson and Brad Law. East Ward remains as it was pre-election with incumbents Kellie O’Callaghan, Dan Clancey, Darren

Howe and Dale Harriman all returning to council.

Former Central Ward Cr Alan McFarlane, the most recent deputy mayor, and former South Ward Cr Darrell White were not voted back in.

The newly-elected councillors will hold a mayoral election later this month, ready for their first ordinary council meeting on December 7.

Ms Ferguson’s election represented a significant change for South Ward after she edged out Mr White, who has been a part of local government for nearly four decades.

The first-time candidate won on preferences after a re-count was carried out on Friday.

A FIREARM was shot into a Toyota 4WD on Friday, November 6 at about 9.30pm.

The incident took place on Olivia Street in Morwell and no one was injured.

A firearm shot into 4WD

A VEHICLE was discovered in flames in front of Lavalla Catholic College on Kosciuszko Street at 1.50am on Monday, November 9.

The vehicle was so badly burnt that police were unable to determine the make or model.

Police said there is nothing to suggest the vehicle had anything to do with the school.

The vehicle was not towed due to the state of damage.

STEVEN Van Eyk has been missing for more than two weeks.

The 30-year-old was last seen at Jeeralang West Road, Jeeralang Junction, about 11pm on Sunday, October 25.

Mr Van Eyk’s fiancee Breeana Shiells said the family are missing him a lot. “His family and friends miss him very much and it has been over two weeks, we are very worried for his safety,� she said.

Ms Shiells said people should not be scared if they spot Mr Van Eyk, but to screenshot their location and contact police. “Steven is not violent at all, but is likely to flee if he feels like he has been seen,� she said. “We are appealing to the public to call Triple Zero if they sight Steven or his likeness and share the location where they saw him.�

Ms Shiells also said that Mr Van Eyk has a distinctive walk and run, he “bobs his head a little bit when he moves�. “Family and friends have been out searching in the area, we all miss him a lot and want him back home,� she said. “We desperately need people to keep an eye out if they are in the area and with the ‘ring of steel’ removed on the weekend there will be more and more people around.�

Senior Sergeant David Fyfe said Mr Van Eyk is believed to have a headlamp and is moving at night. “He may be suffering from a medical condition where he may fear coming home, because of the condition,� he said. “If Steven is keeping an eye on the local media, I want to remind him that something may not be right here, he has left his beautiful partner and children behind. “Even if he does not reach out to police, I urge him to let either a friend or family member know that he is OK.�

On October 26, a trail camera captured images believed to be of Mr Van Eyk in the Tyers Rd area.

Police located Mr Van Eyk’s 2013 dark grey Holden Captiva at the end of a dirt track, north of Tyers on Tyers Rd on October 30.

GIPPSLAND tourist operators are hoping for a “bumper” spring and summer with the help of a new marketing campaign to lure city folk to the region post-lockdown.

Two new multi-million-dollar tourism campaigns are putting Gippsland in the limelight to encourage Victorians to take a break in their home state and support the local tourism industry.

The Victorian government’s new Stay Close, Go Further campaign features Gippsland and the Victorian High Country, launched when the Melbourne ring of steel was lifted on Monday.

This is being run alongside Destination Gippsland’s Little Wonders campaign targeting Melburnians to visit the region’s natural attractions, trails, arts and culture, breweries and wineries.

Destination Gippsland chief executive Terry Robinson said the Princes Highway was already busy early this week as townies began to head east to get out of the big smoke.

“The highway was busy and bookings are strong, we are seeing a lot of mid-week travel as people are getting a real taste of Gippsland in this fantastic weather,” Mr Robinson said.

“We have already received encouraging feedback from businesses to indicate that this will be a bumper spring-summer season.”

Mr Robinson said the Gippsland regional visitor expenditure was down $150 million for every month of lockdown, however he said recovery signs were promising.

He said Gipplsand was in a unique position to take advantage of new freedoms with domestic travel making up 96 per cent of the region’s visitor market.

“Now we are seeing more bookings so the tourism sector can swing into gear and have systems in place for the peak season.”

Mr Robinson said the two new tourism campaigns would help market the region, but businesses also needed to ensure they were COVID-ready and visitors needed to comply with the rules.

“We are now waiting for the last step to increase

capacity in venues and at events to it can be as close to normal for businesses to trade,” he said.

“Hard lockdown made it hard for accommodation operators, some hospitality businesses could keep trading with takeaways and home deliveries, but this just kept their heads above water.

“It’s not the same thing as having a venue or restaurant at full capacity.”

Key changes for regional Victoria that came into effect on Monday included: Cinemas, music halls, concert halls, auditoriums, galleries and museums can re-open with density restrictions in place.

Community venues for all purposes will reopen with a maximum of 20 people inside and up to 10 people per space.

Premier Daniel Andrews also revealed a second phase of opening up would follow at 11.59pm on Sunday, November 22.

“We’ll continue to rely on the advice of our public health experts,” Mr Andrews said.

“And we’ll continue to rely on the efforts of every Victorian.We have worked so hard.We have given up so much. And together we’ve come so far.

“We’ve got to protect it. So let’s stay safe, stay open and keep going.”

HAYFEVER and allergy sufferers have been placed on high alert this week with widespread extreme pollen warnings issued across the state.

The Victorian Health Department issued an extreme pollen count for Churchill yesterday, which recorded a reading of 149.

Pollen levels are measured on how much grass pollen is in the are, with low levels between 1-9, moderate between 10-49, high between 50-59 and extreme 100 and above.

The high pollen count, and storms forecast for the Valley and other parts of Victoria, also prompted authorities to issue warnings about thunderstorm asthma risk.

Thunderstorm asthma is caused by large amounts of whole pollen grains being pulled up into the clouds of an evolving thunderstorm.

Small pollen allergen particles are released into the air in the cold dry outflows from the storm and arrive at ground level where they are breathed into peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lungs.

Acting RACGP president Associate Professor Ayman Shenouda said asthma sufferers should be alert, but not alarmed, and ensure they are carrying medication and have an up-to-date asthma management plan. â&#x20AC;&#x153;October to December is thunderstorm asthma season and right now parts of the country are at high risk,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Those at increased risk of thunderstorm asthma are thought to be people with a history of asthma, undiagnosed asthma, seasonal allergic rhinitis as well as people with a rye grass or pollen allergy.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;People with allergic rhinitis who have never experienced asthma before can experience bronchospasm during certain thunderstorms. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So please take this seriously because thunderstorm asthma can strike without warning.

Rivals to get the chop

TOONGABBIE resident Glen Gillam is fighting tooth and nail with some of the most explosive athletes in the country at the STIHL Timbersports Australian Championships.

The national championships return in a slightly different format this year, with the 2020 event being held virtually for the first time in its history.

Gillam, 38, was part of the five-man Chopperoos team which took out the World Championship title in Prague last year.

He is on the block for Team Victoria this week and will go head-to-head with competitors representing Queensland, New South Wales and Tasmania across six traditional logging disciplines.

Disciplines include the underhand chop, standing block chop, springboard chop, single buck saw, stock saw and hot saw.

The competitions are usually held in iconic locations, recently visiting the Gold Coast and St Kilda Foreshore with thousands of fans in attendance.

But, due to continued border closures, athletes are competing at four different locations across Australia in a world-first.

Points will be accumulated based on times, but the athletes wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t find out the winner until the competition is aired globally on Sunday.

As with a number of multiple location â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;as-liveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; broadcasts during the pandemic, filming is taking place across the country this week.

While the usual prize of a ticket to the World Championships is most likely off the table due to the global pandemic, the $30,000 prize pool will be fiercely contested.

The STIHL Timbersports Virtual Australian Championships live stream will air worldwide on the STIHL Timbersports Facebook and YouTube channels at 8pm on Sunday, November 15.

Highway duplication a winner FEDERAL Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has declared the full duplication of the Princes Highway between Traralgon and Sale will save lives, create jobs, and deliver bring long-term productivity benefits for Gippslandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economy.

He said construction work on the $252.6 million project was scheduled to start early next year after funding was formally confirmed this week. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The final stages of the Princes Highway duplication is one of the most significant government-financed projects in Gippsland and it needs to get started as soon as possible,â&#x20AC;? Mr Chester said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This work will save lives by improving safety for all road users on the last two sections at Flynn and Kilmany which are still single carriageways. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The duplication will improve productivity for transport companies and other businesses that rely on this important highway through Gippsland to reach Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Importantly, this is a significant investment of government money into our region at a time when we are recovering economically from the coronavirus pandemic, the summer bushfires and several years of drought.

Past form comes back to haunt the Latrobe Valley

IT was interesting to read the comments about the Big Battery Project not coming to the Valley (The Express, November 9).

Maybe a background reason for discounting the Valley is the objections loudly raised against any development such as battery recycling, wind power farms etc.

You might be hard pressed to find a “clean new industry” that will satisfy all the various objectors.

If the project had been mooted for the valley no doubt objectors would appear.

It is also suggested that the underlying reason for the battery recycling objections is the inherent and entrenched mistrust of the EPA following years of failure in the Valley.

Until the EPA publicly demonstrates their ability and ruthless determination to protect the community, any project with just a sniff of possible pollution will no doubt be subject to vigorous objections.

Open arms approach worked for Geelong

SORRY Russell Northe (The Express, November 9), but please don’t blame the state government for overlooking the Valley and supporting the Tesla battery being built in Geelong.

People of the Valley had the opportunity to welcome or deny it being placed here and they chose the latter!

Why would the state government support it here when there’s so much resistance, whilst Geelong welcomes it with open arms.

Like every other opportunity for additional employment here, there’s always that minor element that refuse to accept any form of progress because of the effect it will have on them, and what’s worse, they are listened to!

Gippsland PHN chief executive officer Amanda Proposch said all women aged 25 to 74 should have a Cervical Screening Test every five years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers in Australia,â&#x20AC;? she explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Early detection saves lives and participation in the National Cervical Screening Program must continue even in the midst of a pandemic.â&#x20AC;?

Central Gippsland Family Practice (CGFP) registered nurse Karlee Kerrigan, said prevention of cervical cancer remained one of the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;coreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; services general practices provided.

During an unprecedented pandemic, Ms Kerrigan explained the clinic learnt a lot from the first period of lockdown. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the beginning, we had a lot of patients querying whether it was OK to attend the clinic due to the first restrictions. However, with the ongoing government communication and education from our clinic staff, patients now actively attend the

clinic as we have COVID-19 practises in place where patients feel reassured,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At CGFP we prioritise the Cervical Screening Test program and endeavour to do our best to accommodate women when making these appointments.â&#x20AC;?

CGFP was recently able to upskill some of its nurses to conduct cervical screening thanks to the Cervical Screening training provided by Gippsland PHN. There are now more appointments on offer to patients.

Training schedule heats up for new firefighting recruits

FORTY-FIVE new Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) firefighters have been put through their paces in Rawson, Sale, Swifts Creek and Orbost last week as part of a rigorous training course to learn the skills needed to protect communities from bushfires.

FFMVic Gippsland Regional Learning and Development Lead Ben Rankin, said the course covers the essential elements of firefighting including fire behaviour, fire suppression, planned burning and firefighter safety â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our new project firefighters (PFFs) have completed a mix of classroom and field-based activities to get them up to speed with the demands of fighting bushfires as well as the varied roles of a forest firefighter,â&#x20AC;? THE Latrobe Valley paused to remember yesterday.

The 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month each year marks Remembrance Day, observed since the end of World War I to remember the members of their armed forces who died in the line of duty.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the large crowds which normally congregate at cenotaphs across the region were lower, but that did not take away from the significance of the occasion.

In Morwell, people stood to attention as Morwell RSL Sub-Branch president Wayne Hutchinson led the service, laying wreaths.

Flags flew at half-mast at the start of the service and were raised as the national anthems of Australia and New Zealand echoed across the CBD, while The Ode of Remembrance resonated with those in attendance.

“They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, not the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.”

Locals came to pay their respects at the Traralgon cenotaph.

About 50 people watched on as The Last Post was played by City of Traralgon Band’s Lachlan Wilson at 11am and Traralgon RSL members laid wreaths.

Australia Post installed a new flagpole at the Traralgon Post Office to ensure it could fly the flag at half-mast for the special occasion.

Traralgon RSL president Ron Culliver said it meant a lot to people to be able to commemorate the day in some way.

“Especially since it’s been 102 years since the armistice was declared but the memories are still strong with a lot of people, we don’t have many World War veterans in the area,” he said.

“It’s been a hard year for everybody, so it is good to get together and have a bit of a chat.

“The RSL have remained on deck through the times because we have veterans on welfare and people to assist. There are some great volunteers here that help a lot for these commemorations and I would like to thank everyone who came along today.”

Moe RSL also reported good numbers at its annual service, while children at Morwell’s Kylie Early Learning Centre drew poppies in tribute.

Special recognition A SPECIAL Remembrance Day service run by residents at Narracan Gardens in Newborough served as the perfect prelude for an even more special ceremony for one of the aged care homeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own.

Jean Bickerton, 98, was honoured with a presentation of the Commemorative Medallion from the federal government for her years of service during World War II. The Department of Veteransâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Affairs produced the medallion this year to acknowledge the significance of the 75th anniversary of the end of the war and is made available to every living veteran.

Born in the New South Wales town of

Kyogle in 1922, Mrs Bickerton enrolled in the Australian Army as a 22-year-old.

She joined the Australian Army Medical Womens Service, which later became the AANS, and was one of nearly 8500 women who served as nursing aides and technicians, tending to sick and wounded soldiers.

Mrs Bickerton was joined by her three children and son-in-law at yesterdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s presentation, where she received the Commemorative Medallion and certificate signed by Prime Minister Scott Morrison. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I loved every part of it,â&#x20AC;? Mrs Bickerton said of her service. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do it for the recognition.â&#x20AC;?

Hard waste

LATROBE City Council’s twice-yearly booked hard waste collection will go ahead as planned, starting Monday, December 7.

The contractor responsible for this service has confirmed that all appropriate social distancing measures shall be adhered to in accordance with current government directives to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Latrobe City residents will be able to place up to two cubic metres of household hard waste from their property on their nature strip for collection.

All residents must book via the Latrobe City Contact Centre (1300 367 700) or via the Latrobe City Facebook page using the hard waste coupons distributed through the property rates notices.

Householders who place waste on their nature strip without booking will not have their waste collected and may face fines for illegal dumping.

Bookings must be completed by close of business, November 20.

“This booked hard waste collection comes at an ideal time just before Christmas and after many people have been at home during lockdown and tidying their properties,” Latrobe City Council chief executive officer Steven Piasente said.

Residents of Latrobe City receive coupons with their rates notices that permit up to a two cubic metre pile of acceptable items to be collected from their nature strip without any contact with the collection crew.

Acceptable items include couches, mattresses, tables, chairs, exercise equipment, bedside tables, tall boys, rugs, mats, cork tiles, TV cabinets, coffee tables (glass removed), dining tables, outdoor furniture, computer desks, curtains, blinds and fittings, luggage, toys, floating floors, vinyl, carpets and underlay (maximum 30cm diameter x 1.5m long), cane furniture and lamps.

Only acceptable items will be collected.A full list of non-acceptable items is available at www. latrobe.vic.gov.au/waste.

Transfer stations continue to operate as per normal operating hours. They remain open during this COVID-19 outbreak for those without coupons or who have more than two cubic metres of acceptable items.

Mast is set to be rebuilt

A METEOROLOGICAL mast that collapsed after being vandalised will start to be rebuilt next week.

The meteorological monitoring mast at the proposed Delburn Wind Farm fell in August this year, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars damage.

OSMI director Peter Marriott said at the time he was “incredibly disappointed” about the damage caused.

Construction will start on the new mast on Monday, November 16.

OSMI manager of development strategy and compliance Elizabeth Radcliffe said it will be good to have the mast reinstalled.

of the new mast will take about a week to install” she said.

The mast, at 160m in height will replicate the one that was brought down by vandals and will include additional aviation safety features.

“We are also adding safety features that are not a requirement under aviation regulations, we had a conversation with a local pilot and are working with them to make sure the mast works with their regulations,” Ms Radcliffe said.

OSMI will include aviation lighting as an additional safety feature at the request of a Helimed pilot, who regularly flies in and out of the Latrobe Valley and holds a specific authorisation to allow flight below the CASA specified lowest safe altitude.

The lighting will be provided in the form of both a steady low-intensity red light and an infrared

flashing light that is visible with night vision goggles.

Given the nature of the lighting OSMI does not anticipate that its addition will have any impact upon the community; however it will benefit the safety of the all-important Air Ambulance services.

The Delburn Wind Farm has relocated its offices to 52 Ridgeway in Mirboo North and has information about the project on display.

Ms Radcliffe said the team encourage anyone with questions to have a chat with the OSMI team.

The vandalism that has resulted in the necessity for these works to occur remains the subject of an ongoing police investigation.

Annual Toy Run preparations purring along DESPITE the uncertainty surrounding the actual parade of bikes on Saturday, December 5, the collection of gifts for the annual Gippsland Motorcyclists Toy Run has been in full swing.

There will be an even greater demand for Christmas presents this year, and the organisers are determined to fill the need.

Event organiser Alf Vella said they were fortunate to have some generous corporate sponsors in our region, but much of the donations come from caring individuals who step up and help out.

“We are keeping our fingers crossed that we will have some restrictions eased by the date of the Toy Run, which will allow us to run either an abridged event, or the full thing,” he said.

In any case, riders will depart Traralgon at 11am and will be passing through Yallourn North on the way to Willow Grove, through Trafalgar and concluding at Old Gippstown at about 12:15pm.

At Old Gippstown, the riders will have the chance to pass on their gifts to the respective charities.

The Toy Run is in its 21st year, and has become the largest single contributor to the Christmas appeals for the Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul.

“It is something that we are very proud of,” Mr Vella said.

“A total of 2000 children are supported by these two charities at Christmas, and if it wasn’t for the donations by the various sponsors, much needed funds would be redirected from other areas of need.”

Prepare for fire season

AS temperatures rise and summer approaches, the state’s building regulator is urging Victorians to prepare their homes for the 2020-21 fire season.

The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) wants Victorians to take the necessary steps now to make sure they are protected from bushfires.

The VBA’s state building surveyor Andrew Cialini said Victoria is one of the most bushfire prone areas in the world, so it is important to make sure you prepare your home early.

“Victorians know the impact fire can have all too well, but it’s important we don’t become complacent.

The earlier you prepare your home and update your survival plans the better,” he said.

“There are simple steps you can take like clearing leaves from gutters and installing leaf-guards, as well as protecting evaporative coolers with properly sized metal bushfire mesh screens.”

Music Count Us In a big hit at Morwell Central Primary School EVERY year Morwell Central Primary School looks forward to participating in the ‘Music Count Us In’ event, where students from all around Australia sing the same song on the same day at the same time, to promote the importance of teaching music in schools.

Due to COVID-19, the students were unable to sing this year’s song, but as there was an AUSLAN version, the students learnt to sign it instead, during their weekly music classes.

Each learning hub then tuned into the livestream of this year’s Performance Day and signed along to the song You Won’t Bring Us Down.

The students were very happy to be involved in the program once again, even though it was in a different way to previous years.

They really enjoyed celebrating the power of music with over half a million other Australian students.

Lumen Christi’s participation THE students at Lumen Christi Churchill were so happy to be able to participate in ‘Music Count Us In’ again this year.

Music Count Us In is a music program where the same song is sung all over Australia on the same day and at the same time.

Every year Celebration day is a national event with more than 500,000 students from across Australia taking part in singing the program song which this year was very appropriately titled You Won’t Bring Us Down.

Although the lead-up to celebration day, and the day itself looked a lot different to previous years, when students returned to face-to-face learning they practiced the lyrics to the song, instrumental and percussion parts and Australian Sign Language and on celebration day Lumen Christi watched a video of the song showing all the classes performing their parts.

Then the school joined the live stream and countdown in their classrooms to the song that was livestreamed from Cairns.

“Although this year has been challenging, the Music Count Us In program had so many amazing resources to use and really made it easy to participate despite the many restrictions around,” music teacher Mrs Janelle Szkwarek said “It was wonderful to see all of our students so enthusiastic about learning their parts and the pride they showed when successfully performing was wonderful.”

Music Count Us In is a great way to bring music into the lives of so many students and is a really great initiative. Lumen Christi are already looking forward to next year’s song and hopefully being able to celebrate, sing and play together for Music Count Us In 2021.

IT was a Kossie Cup like no other.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the showcase event of the Kossie School calendar was run in front of no family and friends.

Conditions were perfect for the 29th running of the Kossie Cup and students enjoyed the festivities throughout the afternoon.

With cheers from the sidelines from students and teachers only, the elimination races saw the unveiling of great talent, but in the end there could be only one winner and what a winner he was!

Despite stringent handicapping levelling the field, new to the school prep student Blake, tall and lean, was a surprised but extremely happy winner.

No others could chase down the runaway leader. His winning speech “I’ve been waiting for this my whole life,” had the school crowd cheering his win as he celebrated with a victory lap around the track.

No doubt Blake will be back next year to hopefully chase a back to back win.

BOOLARRA pub goers are being made safe with a suite of new COVID measures put in place to encourage locals to head out and support their community-owned venue.

The Boolarra Community Hotel was one of 500 licensed venues in Australia to receive a free Bundaberg Rum-sponsored safety package including hand sanitiser, dispensers, PPE and thermal scanners.

BCH board chair Sue Clutterbuck said the aim of the COVIDSafe package was to ensure patrons felt confident about returning to their local public spaces for a drink and meal.

Ms Clutterbuck said the pub had been ticking over in lockdown, offering the takeaway meals and alcohol, before reopening the bistro for restricted weekend dining.

She said they had taken advantage of a range of small business grants and funding opportunities to help them get by and install infrastructure to cater more outdoor diners in the beer garden.

“We are cautiously optimistic we are coming through this, but you never know what’s around the corner, we had to cancel so many events,” Ms Clutterbuck said.

“We are doing everything we can to make sure people feel safe when they come here and our COVIDSafe plans are being enforced.”

The BCH nearly closed last year after a raft of long standing financial woes but was kept afloat with the help of a team of volunteers helping in the bar, ground maintenance and events planning.

It rebounded with volunteer-run drawcard events such as country singer Tom Curtain, an annual motorbike rally, a New Year’s Eve party and pub favourites such as trivia and open mic nights.

Ms Clutterbuck said they were tentatively hoping to host the Strzelecki Stringbusters in early December, after having to cancel an entire calendar of pre-planned events.

“When you plan things you don’t know how restrictions could change. Cautiously we are planning events, but if things ease off, we can open up with more people at events,” she said.

This year The Express will be providing a Christmas Tree for placement of gifts for children less fortunate in our local communities.

ALL hands are on deck at the Traralgon Little Athletics Centre as it prepares for the first meet of the season this weekend and budding young athletes are being encouraged to join a two-week trial.

TLAC registrar Niree Zammit said the committee had been working overtime to ensure COVID-Safe procedures were implemented in time for the season 2020/21 launch on Saturday.

“People have to register before coming, even if they’re just trialling, so before they actually have to become financial they can come and have a go for a free two-week trial,” Zammit said.

“Little Aths is basically a fun sport to allow children to try some different skills, all at different levels and different age groups without having to commit weekly to a basketball team or something like that.

“Every week is different, we have normally four different programs that run on a rotating basis so you get to try something new every single week.

“There’s lots of different lengths of running, there’s sprinting, there’s long distance, there’s also walking and relays.

“There’s shot put, javelin, high jump, long jump which the kids absolutely love, and it’s a friendly and inclusive atmosphere.”

Children complete different activities each week and are encouraged to strive for personal bests.

“You’re also not competing against each other, you’re competing against yourself and your personal bests,” Zammit said.

To participate in Little Athletics, children must be at least five years old and age groups go up to Under-16s. Saturday’s meet will commence at 9am, but people are asked to arrive at 8.30am for sign-in.

GENERATION next was generation now at Moe on Monday.

Apprentice jockeys stole the show, winning six of the eight races contested.

Lachlan Neindorf completed a double, while Celine Gaudray, Emily Brown,Alana Kelly and Laura Lafferty all enjoyed success.

Neindorf, who arrived in Victoria after dominating the South Australian scene, made an impact early in the card with Yulong Command and Martini Special.

Yulong Command ($1.35fav) justified his short quote with a front-running effort in the Greenhams Gippsland Maiden Plate (1200m).

In the process, the three-year-old gelding sealed the first winner Neindorf had ridden for trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman, who played a key role in him crossing the border.

Martini Special ($11) made a winning debut for Neindorf and trainer Jerome Hunter in the Moe Parklands Motel Maiden Plate (1000m).

The daughter of Super One made her own luck on the pace and held off Universal Lady by a length and a half, delighting Hunter.

“Everything she had done has been really professional,” Hunter said.

“We had never taken her away from Mornington before today, but she was beautifully before the race, had a bit of a wait in the barriers, but once they opened she was a real professional.”

Gaudray continued her love affair with Latrobe Valley tracks with a heady ride steering Brigadier ($21) to victory in the Office National Moe Benchmark 58 Handicap (2050m).

The eight-year-old had struggled in his most recent appearances, but relished a sharp drop in class and rise to a preferred trip, outstaying Californiafirebird to win by a length.

Trainer Wayne Walters gave a thumbs up to Gaudray for the ride, with the Moe victory coming little more than a week after she rode a winning double at Traralgon.

“The 4kg off helped ... she’ll be good,” Walters said.

Freedman would have been impressed with the way Crowned Monarch ($3.30eqfav) rattled home from near last at the home turn to race away by 1 ¼ lengths from Gutsy ($3.30eqfav).

Hall ensured Goldenrod withstood a brave challenge from Miss Epernay to claim the Moe Optical Maiden Plate (1600m).

The two gallopers were engaged in a tense struggle during the concluding stages, but it was Goldenrod, who won by a nose to land a breakthrough win at start seven.

WEEK five of the Traralgon Harriers’ Summer COVID-Iso Series, was held on Thursday, November 5.

Participants were distributed over seven different groupings, each utilising one of seven different 5km running courses, attracted very

strong numbers. Sixty five people in total participated, with a diverse mix of abilities and ages, and included a significant number of recently-joined members - testament to the determination of the Harriers to continue providing a source, albeit restricted, of social exercise, competition and enjoyment to as many club members as possible.

GCL action to start Sunday

CRICKET GCL

REPRESENTATIVE cricket will commence this Sunday in the Gippsland Cricket League for Senior and Under-18 grades.

A new look format has been introduced this season to help minimise any potential disruptions due to COVID-19.

Unlike the usual five round home and away season where all six Gippsland associations play each other once, this season will see two pools of three teams compete against each other.

Teams were selected at random to occupy places in the pools, and as luck would have it, the selections also made sense based on geographic location.

Sale-Maffra, Traralgon and Bairnsdale will make up pool A, while Latrobe-Valley, Leongatha and Warragul will compete in Pool B. Each team will play a match at home and away and also have a bye during the pool stages.

The top two teams in each pool after three home and away matches will qualify for the semi-finals, where they will be pitted against an opponent from the opposing pool.

The opening round of matches this weekend sees Traralgon hosting Sale-Maffra in pool A, and Warragul up against Latrobe Valley in pool B. SALE-MAFFRA has won four of the last five GCL premierships and another title this season could see it on track to match the five-in-a-row effort from the squad of 2002-03 to 2006-07.

The side will retain the bulk of its premiership team, although skipper Jack Rietschel, who has moved to premier cricket, will be a key out.

Traralgon will be led by Lee Stockdale this GCL season, and the gun allrounder should have no shortage of high quality options to help fill the team.

As well as Stockdale, many players in the TDCA have played at state and Victoria Country level, such as Jordan Gilmore, Jake Best and Nathan Freitag.

Gilmore has put together many swashbuckling innings in GCL cricket, whilst Best has three Victorian premier first grade centuries to his name, and Freitag was part of the Hobart Hurricanes academy.

Freitag’s last GCL appearance was a virtual cameo, as he scored 128 in near 40 degree heat two seasons ago.

The addition of Yarram and District into the TDCA has brought added depth to the association, which could prove handy during the campaign.

Yarram and District skipper Anthony Scott is a proven match winner, and has sent many a ball sailing over the fence in GCL cricket during his career.

If the Yarram Scott suits up for the TDCA, he could be pitted against his brother, Brad, who is often part of the SMCA team.

LATROBE Valley will travel to Hallora to take on Warragul and District.

The two sides will be aiming to at least make the semi finals this season, and could see the new-look format as a good opportunity to forge a clearer pathway to potential glory.

Given only one of the three teams in each pool will miss a spot in the semi-finals, already the task of qualifying becomes mathematically easier.

That being said, the home and away games now carry higher ramifications, and just one loss could mean season over.

The Wilddogs 2019-20 season was bookended by wins, but unfortunately, those were the only two wins its was able to achieve.

Latrobe Valley could also have some CaseySouth Melbourne players to choose from in Blair Clymo and Joel Mitchell - who has returned to his home club Moe after a few seasons downtown. If selected, Mitchell will more than likely open the batting, as he did when he last played GCL for the then Central Gippsland Cricket Association in the 2015-16 final.

Clymo will rejoin Casey-South Melbourne in coming weeks, so Latrobe Valley will be keen to have him represent the league while he is available.

Latrobe Valley will want to atone for last seasons disappointing finish, and regain some street credit in 2020-21.

Bairnsdale and Leongatha have the bye for the first round.

Sunday, January 31 has been saved as a reserve day should the GCL season be interrupted.

IN the under 18s, Sale-Maffra and Traralgon will meet at College Oval, and Latrobe Valley will play Warragul at Morwell Recreation Reserve.

THE women’s season has already started, and round two will be played this Sunday. Latrobe and Sale-Maffra will play at Peter Siddle Oval, and Bairnsdale RSL and Centrals will meet.

Sharks, CATS square-off CRICKET LVDCL

BEING winless midway through November is something you wouldn’t normally associate with Latrobe.

But that is precisely the predicament the Sharks find themselves in ahead of a trip to John Black Oval on Saturday.

Opponents CATS are also on the lookout for a first success of the 2020/21 campaign following narrow defeats to Centrals (two wickets) and Morwell (11 runs) in the past fortnight.

Skipper Ben Julin has top-scored in two of his side’s three defeats, while star all-rounder Callum Stewart found some form with both bat and ball last weekend.

Latrobe will be refreshed following the bye, although three players in Anthony Bloomfield, Hiran Rajapakse and Adam Duncan had a hitout at B Grade level last weekend.

Benn Zomer has started the season in good touch as highlighted by his 42 against Centrals.

High-flying Raiders are warm favourites to beat Mirboo North.

Despite having the benefit of some home games early in the season, the Tigers have been struggling with the bat.

Hudson Kerr missed out against Churchill, but has been one of the few shining lights with the willow so far this campaign.

Despite the absence of some imports, Raiders have not missed a beat this campaign with skipper Liam Maynard and the irrepressible Brad Knowles in sparkling form.

The duo lead the list of top rungetters, with Knowles (129) just shading Maynard (128).

Churchill will defend its unbeaten status against Moe at Ted Summerton Reserve.

The Cobras made short work of Mirboo North last week, but are likely to face greater resistance from a Lions outfit boosted by a last-start success against Trafalgar.

Joel Mitchell has fitted back into the Moe team with aplomb and while wicketkeeper-batsman Noah Kane continues to go from strength-tostrength at A Grade level.

But Churchill boasts a top-quality line-up, headed by the likes of Brendan Mason, John Keighran and Matt Harvey, fresh off a five-wicket haul against Mirboo North.

Centrals will strive for a third straight win this season against Jeeralang-Boolarra.

The Lions have started beautifully under new captain-coach Robert Webber, with a wide spread of contributors playing their role.

Home comforts do suit the Panthers, who are still searching for a first win of the season.

Star Sri Lankan recruit Sanitha de Mel got his debut out of the way last weekend and looms as the key wicket for the Centrals attack.

Morwell will look to extend its perfect start away at Traralgon West.

The Tigers and in particular captain Jordan Campbell, have enjoyed a dream start.

Despite a heavy defeat to Raiders last weekend, Traralgon West has shown some good signs already this season.

Struggling Imperials facing Tigers CRICKET TDCA

A BIG round 5 is here and a week of great weather will see all games going ahead as scheduled.

Some punishing results from last round may have left a few clubs bruised and battered, but they must turn it around quickly to get the season back on track.

Match of the round this week is between a high flying Gormandale and a struggling Imperials who must turn their season around.

Gormandale are up and about after smashing rivals Glengarry last weekend.

Gormandale’s bowling quintet made up of Shaun Barbour,Adam Brady, Dylan Freitag,Yohan Soyza and Luke Henderson are in devastating form as they have dismantled both teams they’ve played against already this season for under 100 runs both times.

Any one of this five pronged attack could take a team apart on any day which is why the Tigers are already looking like a force to be reckoned with this season.

Imperials on the other hand are in dire need of a form turnaround after disappointing showings against Rovers and Ex Students in recent weeks.

The upside for Imperials is they have a fabulous recent record at Stoddart Oval, in particular Ryan

Morley, who in his last five matches at the venue has made 255 runs at an average of 85 so no doubt the Tigers will want to get him out early to give themselves the best chance at winning.

Prediction: Imperials batting just hasn’t fired over the last two rounds getting knocked over for 92 and 79. For Imps to come up against a team in the form that Gormandale are in is a nightmare and if they give the likes of Brady or Barbour just the littlest of chances to get on a roll it could be another early finish on the cards. With that said the Devils play Stoddart Oval very well and even though they haven’t started the season off in the best of form they will still be confident in their chances this round so watch out for a good contest either way.

Watch out for: Joel Randall dismissed Gormandale captain Chris Lehner for a rare Ruby pair last year and will be no doubt aiming to dismiss him cheaply again. Watch out for Paul Roberts who is coming off two man-of-the-match performances to play the role of bodyguard for Lehner so that Randall isn’t able to shake him up again this round.

Ex Students will welcome the Yarram & District Cricket Club to the Traralgon Recreation Reserve for the first time ever and will be wanting to continue on their devastating form which has found them sitting top of the table after four rounds.

Star batsman Jordy Gilmore came within two runs of notching up a century last round.

Lee Stockdale got a run a ball 65 and Matt Dyke is looking in good touch as well so watch out Yarram because the Sharks are in great touch.

Stockdale will have studied Yarram’s scores over the last few weeks and will notice that spin bowlers have been doing most of the damage to the Pelicans batsmen.

With James Pryde, Michael Warne and Stockdale himself in the line up you can almost guarantee these three bowlers will bowl their full allotment of overs and get some success while they’re at it.

Yarram are going along OK, but just need to tighten up in a few areas.

The new ball has been a little bit of an issue as their bowlers have been giving away some extras early in the day which mustn’t happen against a team like Ex Students.

Jeremy Babb will be one to watch this week after a good showing last weekend but its now time to see big names like Dylan Rash and Jarryd Swift come into the A Grade team, especially when taking on the mighty Sharks.

Prediction: Ex Students are way too good and everything would need to go right for Yarram to have a chance. It may rely heavily on Ant Scott to make a big score and hope the likes of Bland and Pedlow can do enough around him to give them a chance. Ex Students to win.

Watch out for: Rob Voss played in the B’s last week and will be ready to be unleashed this weekend. Rob Voss charging in on a lively Rec Reserve wicket is a sight to behold to watch out Yarram.

Glengarry take on Toongabbie at Fred King Oval for the last match of the round and it is a must win for both clubs.

These traditional rivals always play great games and no doubt this will be a great contest as well.

Glengarry had a shocker against Gormandale last week and must bounce back.

Being bundled out for just 53 certainly put a dent in the Magpies’ premiership credentials so a strong showing here must be made.

Toongabbie are coming off the bye but before that they also got mauled by a rampant Tigers team and after freshening up with a week off should be better prepared this week.

The Rams have been a bit negative with the bat this year so expect some more stroke play this week.

Prediction: Glengarry are a good team and will want to prove it this week against their closest neighbour. Toongabbie’s bowling may not have the same star power as last season but they still have enough class to worry Glengarry’s top order although everything will need to go right to reduce the Magpies to a gettable target. Glengarry to win.

Watch out for: The need for more stroke play may allow the likes of Kev Stoddart to really go after Glengarry’s attack. If that’s the case Stoddart could provide some great highlights this round as he has a unique range of shots and is great to watch when he gets going.

AFTER an extended winter break due to COVID-19 bowlers are looking forward to their first games of pennant this week.

This is the latest start to a pennant season with Saturday Pennant always starting in early October and midweek even earlier some years.

Midweek Pennant resumed on Tuesday with Trafalgar defeating Morwell 14-71 to 2-56.

Traralgon proved too strong for near neighbours Traralgon RSL, prevailing 16-68 to 0-48.

A strong Drouin team travelled to Newborough and landed the spoils

14-65 to 2-56 and Morwell Club defeated last season’s premiers Warragul 14-56 to 2-50.

Saturday sees the start of Weekend Pennant with last season’s premier Newborough visiting Morwell Club.

Last season’s runner-up Traralgon faces a Trafalgar team which has troubled them on occasions in recent years.

New team to the top-flight,Warragul hosts near neighbour Drouin.

Last season’s big improvers Longwarry have been busy over the winter months recruiting some experienced players and will be looking to start the year well at home against a Traralgon RSL team they defeated in a semi final last year.

With the delayed start, the pennant bowls season will be continuing with the finals in the week prior to Easter.

WHILE many took off for the Melbourne Cup weekend, the Gippsland Tennis Academy Tennis Players headed up the Calder Highway to Bendigo to play in this year’s Inter Academy Challenge.

This event sees the Gippsland Sports Academy (GSA) play against the other four academies in country Victoria (Barwon, Bendigo, South

West and Western Vic). Out of the 16 GSA athletes, 11 participated.

Play on th he Saturd day was doub bles where GSA had a strong showing.

Pairs had to play up top to six matches, with all but one pair having winning records but Johnston/ Collison and Nicholson/Goold where the standouts on the day.

Day two was singles day.

Players played three singles matches and again GSA looked strong from the outset, and by the

end everyone came away with a winning record but Nicholson won alll off he’’s th hree sets.

When the results were read out Gippsland came out as winner closely followed by West Vic in second and Bendigo in third.

Captain Sam McGregor lifted the plaque and thanked everyone.

Big congratulations to the team but special mention to Matt Nicholson for going the weekend undefeated.

Academy pays homage to achievers

THE Gippsland Sports Academy would usually have had our Annual Awards evening in May, however this was not to be, instead on Wednesday November 4, the event was held via Zoom.

It was a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our athletes and present their trophies to them.

There were four major awards presented this year.

The Phil Shelley Award for service to the Gippsland Sports Academy and sport in Gippsland.

This was awarded to renowned swimming coach Brian Ford (from Traralgon).

Brian coached for GSA this season after a year on the sidelines.

Brian happily took on the role of the Development Squad Coach this season, which was key in helping to create a new platform for our GSA athletes.

Creating this new squad in the Academy’s swimming program, helped create a new framework which successfully allowed two levels of training among the national hopefuls, and national swimmers alike.

When Brian was asked if he would help to develop this second tier of training he did not hesitate, and

offered his coaching and leadership where it was needed most.

Brian has represented the Gippsland Sports Academy since its inception, and he has developed athletes across all levels of swimming ranging from Gippsland junior level swimmers through to national and Olympic level athletes.

Brian is heavily involved in swimming throughout Gippsland and with Swimming Victoria The David Drane Award for encouragement was won by Jordan Johnston (from Eastwood).

Jordan was a vital part to the GSA Tennis make up. He is a leader, people gravitated towards him, followed and listened to him.

Jordan has a lot of other strengths that make him deserving of this award. His dedication to the GSA program, and the sport of tennis, is wonderful to witness first hand. He is in the same boat as a lot of people and having to travel fair distances to GSA training, but the difference is that there is no complaining from him or his parents.

Jordan is a wonderful assist to the GSA Tennis program and is worthy winner of The David Drane Award.

The Darrell White Award is in recognition of high achievement in a team orientated sport and was awarded to Lachlan Chester (from Lakes Entrance).

Lachlan shows an outstanding effort towards

taking on coaching advice and technical feedback.

His attendance and concentration is exactly what is required to be an athlete.

Lachlan coming from Lakes Entrance shows great commitment and dedication to his sport.

Lachlan was selected into the 2019 Volleyball Victoria indoor state team squad for U17 boys.

The Tim Forsyth Award for Sporting Excellence was won by Elayna Pistrin (from Morwell).

Elayna is an incredibly hard working and dedicated young talented athlete.

Hard work and consistency have been Elayna’s strengths ever since she was young.

Elayna was determined this season to achieve both the national times for the 100 and 200m disciplines in breaststroke, even though these times are harder than ever due to the fact that they are 17-21 years times.

It didn’t make any difference to Elayna.

Again Elayna set her mind and her planning to the task, and pushed her body to achieve!

Elayna achieved these milestones towards the back end of the season. No surprise to all who know how she trains and races. In doing so, Elayna also broke the 200m breaststroke event record, at the Gippsland Championships, held by previous national 100/200m silver medallist Lily Collins.

Well done Elayna, you are a superstar person in the making, and a joy to coach.
