MEMBER for Morwell Russell Northe has taken aim at the state government for its “complete failure” to support local sport and community groups facing displacement.

Speaking in parliament last week, Mr Northe tabled “the plight” of several Latrobe Valley groups including Latrobe Valley Squash, the Morwell Clay Target Club and the Traralgon & District Arts

Society, who have lost or will soon lose access to their facilities.

He implored Premier Daniel Andrews to sit down with the volunteer groups and discuss options for relocation or new facilities.

“This really is an extraordinary situation, and just so disappointing and unnecessary, and that’s why I have called upon the government to step up and resolve these matters,” he said.

last year also left several other community organisations which used the precinct without homes, in a situation he labelled “diabolical”.

“Long-standing groups like the Latrobe Valley (LV) Yacht Club, LV Game Fishing Club and the LV Triathlon Club have all lost access to their clubrooms which they had developed with their own funds,” Mr Northe said.

“I was gutted to hear that the LV

Yacht Club has moved on and their vital Sailability program was disbanded.

“Now the future of other organisations are also in jeopardy.”

The Traralgon & District Arts Society has been ordered to move from its home at the Traralgon Railway Station by October due to works on the Gippsland line as part of the state government’s Regional Rail Revival.

GIPPSLAND federal MPs are seeking a meeting this week with Environment Minister Sussan Ley, urging her to override a Federal Court decision which threatens the future of the native forestry industry.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester, who has three ministerial portfolios, and Federal Member for Monash Russell Broadbent, believe the Federal Court has no jurisdiction over the Regional Forest Agreements - the legislated agreement between the federal and state governments that govern native forest harvesting.

RFAs are exempt from the provisions of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act that protect native species.

The Federal Court found last month that stateowned timber company VicForests breached Victoria’s Code of Practice by harvesting 26 logging coupes in the Central Highlands inhabited by the Leadbeater’s Possum, which is officially listed as critically endangered.

The ruling found that an additional 41 coupes were unlikely to comply.

All the coupes are also home to the greater glider.

State shadow assistant forestry minister and Narracan MLA Gary Blackwood is also seeking a meeting with Premier Daniel Andrews over the issue.

The three MPs said the Federal Court judgement meant the RFAs did not give VicForests the right to manage its own environmental responsibilities.

information had often been a perpetrator’s way of controlling CALD women experiencing family violence from seeking help.

“That would be exacerbated by isolation. Many women from CALD backgrounds are not aware of the many forms of violence that occur and that all of these are against the law, and presume only extreme physical violence is unlawful,” she said.

“Many women cope with emotional and psychological abuse through their ongoing connections within the community, at work, volunteering and amongst friends.

“It is of concern as to how women will be coping with these support networks cut off.”

Ms Sinha said it was possible that CALD women would not be reporting at this stage because of isolation “and the lack of knowledge as to how to gain support”.

“It will be so important to listen to the voices of CALD women during and following this period to learn

what the experience is and what our service and community responses can be,” she said.

Multicultural centre against family violence service InTouch has some helpful information for CALD women to distinguish if their partner is using family violence while on isolation such as: stopping you from going out to shop for food or getting medicine, using COVID-19 to instil fear or control the family’s finances, threatening to infect you with the virus or invite people with COVID19 to come into your home, keeping track of your personal communication devices, using the pandemic to excuse their abusive behaviour, or telling you that family violence organisations are closed and that police would not help you during the pandemic.

“It is morally incumbent on the government to ensure these hardworking families are treated with the respect they deserve.”

“It was like the perfect situation for a perpetrator,” she said.

Ms Pullar was specifically concerned about CALD women experiencing violence from their partners as home isolation meant they had been cut off from their usual connections in the community.

“We have more concerns in regards to their understanding of COVID-19 and how perpetrators are using the pandemic to provide them with inaccurate information,” she said.

“Prior to COVID they might have been in their community or they could access interpreter service but if they’re home and not staying out they’re reliant on the perpetrator for information.

“For CALD women experiencing family violence this is an added layer for them.”

Lisa Sinha, who recently retired as chief executive officer for Gippsland Multicultural Services, echoed Ms Pullar’s concerns.

QUANTUM Support Services has expressed concerns over the impact of social restrictions on women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds who are experiencing family violence.

Quantum acting chief executive officer Cindy Pullar said while current police data on family violence had not shown a “significant change” in terms of reporting during COVID19, however, this did not mean that incidence of family violence in the Latrobe Valley has decreased.

“While there’s no significant change in data since COVID-19, the rate of family violence incidence (in our area) is still significantly high.When you look statewide, Latrobe Valley is in the top five of family violence incidence,” she said.

Ms Pullar said it was possible that there was a “high level of underreporting” of family violence within the community as people were advised to isolate at home since March.

SUPPORT dog Moby was among smiling faces welcoming students back to Grey Street Primary School on Tuesday.

The eight-month-old Bernese mountain dog has been working with the school’s welfare team since the start of the year and is now helping students ease back into on-site learning.

Grey Street Primary School principal Dean Gray said students were shocked to see how big Moby had grown while they were away.

“Now that all the kids are coming back from time away and with restrictions for adults coming on site it provides a bit of anxiety for students, so Moby has been walking kids to class ... it has been really nice to have him at the gate and he can be

that beacon that they walk towards,” Mr Gray said.

“He is very popular, being a puppy he still needs to take time off during the day so he has a bed in the office and has a bit of a snooze in the middle of the day, he mostly works in the morning and afternoon.

“Currently he works alongside our welfare team helping any students that require some help regulating their emotions or that feel a bit anxious and patting a dog can always be calming.”

Moby has had basic obedience training and will have more specific training to provide specialist support to children at the end of the year.

Mr Gray said the staff is relieved to have the students back on campus.

“There were a lot of smiles

coming through the gate this morning, especially those bigger kids who rely so much on their social circles, having their friends back was really important for them,” he said.

“How quickly the kids got their heads around the new technology was really impressive, but every student is going to have a different experience with off site learning depending on their circumstances.We tried our best to cater for all students and families as much as we could so it is better to have them back.”

Mr Gray said Grey Street Primary School encouraged parents not to enter school grounds in accordance with government regulations.

“It does feel a bit strange not having the community coming onto the campus,” he said.

and teachers are able to get back to doing what teachers do best,” he said.

“We had to adapt and adjust and hopefully we will not have to do anything like that again.”

Morwell Central Primary School principal Justine Smyth said despite “being a little bit different it’s fantastic to have the students back”.

“It took a bit of planning and adjusting to the new drop offs, we trialled it with the preps to twos and it went really smoothly,” she said.

“Overall the kids are really happy to be back and we are happy to have them here.”

Grey Street Primary School principal Dean Gray said there were a lot of smiling faces from students and teachers on Tuesday.

“The community were not prepared for something like this and for us it was such a quick change, we had not anticipated the lessons that will come out of it which are important as well,” he said.

Education Minister James Merlino said “having students learn from home has made a significant contribution to slowing the spread of coronavirus”.

“Going back to the classroom will be a welcome change for students, teachers and families who have all done an excellent job while students were learning from home,” Mr Merlino said.

ON Tuesday, the final round of Victorian students returned to school.

About 618,000 students from Grades 3 to 10 returned to their classrooms around the state.

The government has implemented staggered drop off and pick up times for students as well as staggered breaks to reduce the number of students mixing with other year levels.

It has also implemented physical distancing measures for staff alongside increased sanitation for students, including turning off water fountains.

Newborough Primary School principal Christine Robinson said it was “absolutely lovely” to see students back at school.

“We love having the students back on campus, and the parents were amazing during remote learning,” Ms Robinson said.

“The only major changes we have had to make are drop offs and pick ups, other than that it is almost business as usual.”

Kosciuszko Street Primary School principal Chelsea Granger said she “loved seeing all the students back” on campus on Tuesday.

“It was really nice, it felt like we were all back together again after a long time,” she said.

“I thought it would feel like the first day of school, but it was slightly different to that... there was a sense of calm as well as

Recent protests lead to logging shutdown FOREST activists are vowing to keep returning to Baw Baw after logging was shut down at coupes across Gippsland this week in a call for an immediate end to native forest logging.

A coalition of forest groups had established a blockade at the Blue Streak coupe near Tanjil Bren Road on Tuesday, with two activists charged for locking onto logging machines.

Activists were at that same Baw Baw coupe about a fortnight ago when a woman was arrested after perching herself up a 30-metre tree sit attached to machines for two days.

The day of coordinated actions stopped logging at Lakes Entrance and Noojee as well as at others across Victoria at Cambarville, Toolangi, Pig Pat’s Creek and Mount Cole in the state’s west.

Protesters are ramping up their efforts as logging is still being carried out, despite a recent Federal Court ruling that logging in the Central Highlands is breaching environmental laws designed to protect threatened species.

IF rolling out of bed proved particularly difficult on Tuesday morning then the Bureau of Meteorology has offered up an explanation as to why.

Temperatures recorded across the Latrobe Valley show it was the coldest start for the year so far and the chilliest June morning since 2013.

The mercury dipped to a frigid -2.5 degrees at 5.30am before peaking at a balmy 13.6 just after 3pm.

BOM senior forecaster Chris Arvier said “quite severe frost” was widespread across most of Victoria on Tuesday morning.

“We had an extremely cold start right across the state and it would have been very cold for a lot of people getting up in the morning,” Mr Arvier said.

“There were a lot of places in the minus two to minus three (degree) range ... so very cold indeed.”

Frost and fog have been regular morning features across the Latrobe Valley so far this winter, thanks largely to a high pressure system engulfing most of the state.

“The reason it gets so cold this time of year, it’s generally when we very very stable weather patterns,” Mr Arvier said.

“With these clear skies it means there’s no blanket to help trap the day time heat at the surface, all that heat just escapes overnight.

“When we have a combination of light winds and clear skies in generally when we see those really low temperatures.”

The patience and resolve of individuals, families, employees, employers, organisations and communities has really been tested in recent weeks; and there is still a long road ahead of us. It has been pleasing to see a number of COVID-19 testing facilities open up within the Latrobe Valley and ensure those who require testing have access. Many parts of Regional Victoria have been blessed to have very few or no active COVID-19 cases and its imperative it remains that way during the recovery phase. Again I thank all those who are providing health and other necessary services during these uncertain times.

So many people are regularly going over and beyond the call of duty to ensure the health and well-being of local residents and in the continuing provision of goods and services.

It has been an extremely tough time for those in the hospitality sector with significant restrictions imposed upon many businesses including entertainment venues, pubs, clubs, cafés and restaurants. As restrictions are eased slightly it’s important to not only respect the guidelines in place, but make the effort to support our local businesses where we possibly can. It is going to be tough journey back for many of these same organisations and their employees and they will need our support ongoing. Some of our local enterprises who have been able to remain open in some capacity have found innovative ways to keep operating and provide their goods and services in a different manner which has been terrific to observe. And as always it is crucial to be informed and keep up to date with health information along with community and business supports. In this context you should find the following websites helpful:

As I constantly say, the Latrobe Valley has experienced a number of significant challenges over previous years, and we have continually demonstrated our resilience during those difficult times. This current challenge is clearly a different proposition and it’s therefore imperative that appropriate Government supports and assistance are making a positive difference to employers, employees, individuals, families and communities. I thank all levels of Government for their efforts thus far in the most difficult of circumstances. Re-opening of railway is right on track

AFTER more than two months of closure due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the Walhalla Goldfields Railway has advised that services will resume on Wednesday, June 24, with the first train the 11am Walhalla-Thomson Station service.

Trains will run twice daily to the Winter timetable between June-August, but only return journeys from Walhalla to Thomson and back will be available.

President Phillip Milbourne said the railway’s board was extremely grateful to its volunteer workers for continuing to carry regular track inspections and general maintenance during the enforced closure.

“Along with all other tourism operators and local businesses, we have lost substantial income and now look forward to welcoming back our visitors to the railway and the historic town of Walhalla.” Mr Milbourne said.

“Because of social distancing requirements, passenger numbers will be significantly restricted to a maximum of 50 people per train.”

“To avoid disappointment, we strongly suggest that visitors pre book online and arrive at Walhalla station at least 20 minutes before the scheduled departure time.” Mr Milbourne said.

Mr Chester pointed to the Gippsland line upgrade as a pivotal plank for the region’s future.

“I think there’s now greater interest in projects like the $530 million upgrade of the Gippsland line among people who’ve been working from home since March: it’s shown just how important these kinds of projects are to the long-term prosperity of our region,” he said.

Work is progressing on the upgrade, with contractors being sought to undertake the design and construction work along the corridor.

These works include track duplication between Bunyip and Longwarry, a crossing loop extension at Morwell and second platforms at Morwell and Traralgon stations to create more opportunities for trains to pass.

Construction is scheduled to start at the end of this year.

FEDERAL Member for Gippsland Darren Chester declared now is the time for regional communities to capitalise on the growing popularity of remote working and sell the benefits of country living to unhappy city commuters.

Mr Chester said many businesses had to quickly adapt to their employees working from home during the coronavirus pandemic - and had seen how it could be successful.

Time to fast track regional rail

ONCE again the Grattan Institute is calling on the good people of Australia and their elected representatives to forgo the aim of a better-planned and more equitable Australia - by ‘dissing’ regional rail.

This time however, the pro ‘mega-city’ agenda of the thinktank is oddly timed.

As a result of COVID-19 restrictions, commentators, businesses and families are all wakening to the idea that remote working and regional living means the great Australian dream of an affordable quarter-acre-block is far from dead.

Perhaps it was a firm grip on the status quo and the infrastructure that was holding us back all along.

This is a concept that Regional Capitals Australia, an organisation I chair and which Latrobe City Council an active member, has long been championing.

We make this case because better-connected regional cities have communities that are healthier and wealthier - more access means opportunities.

In an opinion piece responding to Labor’s call for fast rail along the east coast, the Institute has stated the concept must be put to bed.

“Good bullet trains are expensive, and bad bullet trains are very expensive,” the Institute grandeurs, in what could easily be the catch cry for boffins preaching to the inner-city echo chamber.

Perhaps a more relevant statement is that continuing to serve a ballooning Sydney and Melbourne with new brownfield rail infrastructure is very expensive and the debt we can no longer afford.

Our country needs a firm grip on the future, not a commitment to doubling down on the things that have held us back - namely productivity crushing congestion.

For good reason Federal Labor and the Morrison-McCormack Government both have ‘positions’ and ‘plans’ to improve Australia’s regional rail.

If COVID-19 has shown us anything, it must be that now is the time to move on past ‘positions’ and ‘plans’.

Now is the time to put regional rail on the ‘shovel-ready’ and ‘funded’ track. They say that all good ideas have their time.

With a rethink on the way we live and work on the cards and a government ready to build its way out of debt - there has never been a better time to fast track regional rail for the benefit of all Australians.

What is the progress of indoor tennis centre?

THE VFF is disappointed by the announced withdrawal of a number of quad bike manufacturers from the Australian market.

We cannot, and will not, back away from our stance that there is nothing more important than the safety of our farmers, our families and our farm workers.

The decision to withdraw products from the Australian market, rather than adhere to Australia’s new safety regulations, has caused significant angst in the farming community.

Victorian farmers have enjoyed mutually beneficial relationships with manufacturers and their dealers for decades.

The new safety regulations, including the mandatory fitting of Operator Protection Devices (OPDs) from October 2021, are designed to address the 15 deaths and 650 hospitalisations per year caused by quad bike accidents, according to Safe Work Australia.

More than 5000 Victorian farmers have participated in Victoria’s quad bike rebate scheme, demonstrating their commitment to farm safety.

We may be a small portion of the international quad bike market, but we also understand that we are not the first country to mandate roll over protection, and that we will not be the last.

Rollover protection has been mandatory in Israel since the early 1990s, yet Israel still enjoys a competitive market for safe, compliant quad bikes.

Farm rates rise not on

AFTER dealing with the impact of catastrophic bushfires, years of drought and now the pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic our farmers need some certainty.

In recent years, massive increases to farm rates in some local government areas have pushed up farmers’ rates burden by tens of thousands of dollars.

With many councils now having released draft budgets, it seems our farmers will again be shouldering an increasingly heavy burden.

I again call on the state government to put a freeze on all rates categories this financial year to help to build confidence and ease the squeeze on farm budgets.

In a year where many councils have also taken a massive hit from the impact of bushfires and the coronavirus, the Andrews Government must also play its part.

By helping councils cover any loss in revenue, it will ensure the important role of councils can continue uninterrupted during these difficult times.

Many Victorians are doing it tough this year. A massive rates hike is the last pressure they can afford to shoulder.

“I think this strongly reflects the community we have here and the community’s strong connection to the pool. They were happy to donate so much money, it’s quite incredible,” Ms Pincini said.

“The pool is 100 years-old and a lot of people have stories about it and have a lifelong connection with it, these tiles will lock in that connection.”

The new complex will include a nine-lane 25-metre swimming pool, a toddler pool and a splash park as well as changerooms and a kiosk.

Ms Pincini said one of the pool’s drawcards was its bushland setting along a creek among the ferns, with space for a barbecue and social catch-up.

The $5.5 million pool upgrade is being partly funded by South Gippsland Shire Council with $1m in community co-funding.

As part of this, the Mirboo North and District Community Foundation has been matching community funds on a dollar-fordollar basis.

Ms Pincini said they were only $50,000 off the million-dollar target and were hoping to raise the balance from business sponsors.

“Given the pool was at risk of closing forever 10 years ago, they community can’t wait, they will have a brand new pool,” Ms Pincini said.

“It will be incredible at the launch to have the whole community there to enjoy the new facilities.”

MIRBOO North swimming pool community fundraising efforts have been kicked into overdrive with a whopping $950,000 raised towards a target of $1 million for the project.

The latest buy-a-tile campaign provided an extra $32,000 into the kitty as locals gear up for a fully-revamped pool to be opened in December.

Friends of the Mirboo North Swimming Pool secretary Jodie Pincini said the group was “overwhelmed” by the response to the buy-a-tile campaign, originally hoping to raise $10,000.

Ms Pincini said they had sold 325 tiles, which will bear the benefactor’s family name, with each tile to be used in a colourful mural near the pool entrance.

She said they would now consult with the community on a final design for the tiles.

POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a road rage incident which occurred in Traralgon last month.

On Tuesday, May 19 between 9am and 9.30am a silver Holden Commodore Calais was stationery next to a white VF Commodore at the traffic lights at the Breed Street intersection on the Princes Highway.

Police say the male driver of the silver Commodore began to verbally abuse the occupant of the white Commodore.

It is alleged the male driver then flicked a lit cigarette into the white Commodore and proceeded to speed off through the traffic lights.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dash cam footage is asked to phone Constable Jenkinson at the Traralgon Police Station on 5172 2700.

POLICE are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a ram raid in Moe this week.

At about 5.54am on Sunday, June 7 a white sedan with a sunroof reversed into the front entrance of a business located on Moore Street.

CCTV footage of the incident shows the driver and front passenger exit the vehicle and enter the store before stealing several vacuum cleaners.

The rear left tail light of the vehicle was left hanging out and the bumper and has been

damaged in the incident.

Police are asking a man who was seen walking along Moore Street minutes before the incident occurred to come forward in the hopes he can assist with inquiries.

The man was wearing a fluoro work jacket with a hoodie, pants and work boots.

DUE to the coronavirus pandemic, the Traralgon RSL Day Club has been unable to meet each Tuesday at 10am.

It has been decided that they will not be going back to the club until January 2021.

Library’s new stream team

LATROBE library members can take advantage of a free Beamafilm subscription with their library card.

Latrobe City libraries have partnered with the streaming service, Beamafilm, which gives library members free access to more than 1000 films and documentaries.

Thirty five per cent of Beamafilm’s content is produced in Australia.

Beamafilm managing director Louise van Rooyen said during lockdown the demand for streaming services increased drastically and its emphasis on having a high rate of Australian films sets Beamafilm apart.

“One third of our content is local, by doing this we are giving Australia its voice in the movie industry and also fostering the local economy,” Ms van Rooyen said.

“These are Australian productions, many are Australian stories and they feature local actors.”

Ms van Rooyen said now that streaming has “come of age” it is important that Australian children particularly are enjoying local content.

A CAFE with a fun feline twist is opening in Traralgon on Saturday.

The Grounded Paws Animal Rescue Cat Cafe is opening a cat lounge where customers can enjoy a cup of coffee and play with kittens and cats.

The cat lounge is a brightly coloured room at the back of the cafe, the walls are lined with cosy chairs and toys for the feline residents.

Grounded Paws Animal Rescue currently has 48 cats in care and a few dogs, but it focuses on cats because they tend to be abandoned more often and adopted less.

Grounded Paws Animal Rescue president Shelly Chessum said they created the Cat Cafe as a safe space for their more shy cats.

“We’ve run Grounded Paws Animal Rescue for (the past) six or seven years now, and we got a little cat in

last year called Dixie,” Ms Chessum told The Express.

“Dixie was in the pound as a kitten and she was terrified so we busted her out and had her in private foster care at my home, she never came out of her shell.

“We thought to ourselves ‘we get these kinds of kittens in all the time what are we going to do for them?’ and so in the end we really built a place for Dixie and cats like her.

“We decided to build ourselves a base, give Gippsland something really major and fun and more importantly we can educate the community about looking after cats.”

Grounded Paws Animal Rescue takes animals planned for euthanasia from the pound into foster care and adopts them out to people.

All of the animals at the cat cafe will also be up for adoption.

“The beauty of a place like this is that they are two separate buildings so people can come and have a coffee or a sit down meal without having to interact with the animals if they do not want to,” Ms Chessum said.

TO celebrate the final day of remote learning for some students and the first two weeks of having the Prep to Grade Two students back on campus, the students and staff at Morwell Central Primary participated in a Footy Fun Day. Everyone enjoyed coming to school in their favourite team’s colours.

The staff said they were really looking forward to

the return of the Grade 3-6 students and sent them a welcome back message via a footy video they made and posted on the school’s Facebook page.

In this video, principal Justine Smyth and the assistant principal Reece Malcolmson congratulated the parents and caregivers for all the wonderful work they have done with their children during the coronavirus restrictions.

ArcBlue operates internationally across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Hong Kong and are a Professional Advisory Services (PAS) Panel that works extensively for the Victorian Government. Established in Gippsland, the Broadening Horizons program is an education program designed to link the world of work to the curriculum, providing students with real world learning opportunities that equip them with the skills and dispositions needed for a changing twenty-first century economy. The program facilitates the brokerage and development of school and industry partnerships which are central to providing real world opportunities to students and the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s overall success. Now in its seventh year we are looking to expand the program team with the addition of a suitably skilled and experienced Program Coordinator, initially until 30 December 2020, at 0.6 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 0.8 EFT, with the possibility of extension.

The role has a strong focus on developing and facilitating the program in the Wellington and East Gippsland area with the primary purpose being to engage with and support the program participants (made up of school and industry partnerships) and broader stakeholders to ensure continued program participation and growth. This includes the coordination and facilitation of a range of activities across several key areas encompassing partnership development and participation, professional development, developing the community of practice, program promotion and marketing, data collection and reporting.

The person we are seeking must possess a relevant tertiary qualification with experience in community or stakeholder engagement, program, or project coordination, or have worked in a role which has had significant focus on economic or workforce development. The role includes the delivery of orientation and professional development workshops to participants on a regular basis and therefore experience delivering presentations or workshops is essential. You must possess strong stakeholder engagement and partnership development skills, excellent presentation and facilitation skills. Your communication skills, both written and verbal must be second to none. You will be highly organised, analytical and possess strong administration skills.

Greyhound racing on world stage

GREYHOUNDS

GREYHOUND Racing Victoria has teamed up with Sky Racing and TAB to broadcast greyhound racing to the world.

GRV chairman Peita Duncan said from this week the sport would be beamed into North America with a potential audience of millions of people.

“This initiative with Sky Racing allows us to showcase our great athletes, trainers, racing and sport to the world,” she said.

“It also opens up a massive new

wagering audience which will help us work through COVID-19, increase returns to our participants and position us for an exciting new future.

“This is a first for Victorian and Australian greyhound racing, and gives us unprecedented opportunity to share and grow the sport with a massive new audience.”

Duncan said initially Australian greyhound racing would be broadcast throughout the United States via Sky Racing World website and online wagering companies.

LVFL MIGHT QUIT VCFL

VALLEY Sport reported on August 23, 1985 that the Latrobe Valley Football League is well on the way to quit the VCFL, at a long and sometimes emotional League meeting it was decided that the league should look at the ramifications of disaffiliation with the VCFL. The directors also gave the thumbs down on the recommendations of the VCFL enquiry into football in Gippsland.

LVFL secretary Joe Hutchinson stated that the VCFL were dictatorial in their attitude without regard to the LVFL. The League were forced to buy jumpers and balls through the VCFL without consultation.

Mr Hutchinson said the clubs had a loyalty to their sponsors who supply their goods.

The VCFL imposed a $10 fine per player if they did not wear the endorsed clothing.

HOW’S this from 1926?

One might well ask how football can be especially dangerous seeing that practically every young man plays the game at some time or other.

But it is the presence of the electric light wires which makes the pastime dangerous wherever wires exist.

Boys and youths not realising the danger, kick the ball against the wires causing them to short-circuit and set fire to poles and even houses.

This makes football very dangerous when the ball is kicked at the wires, and also causes serious loss to the Hydro-Electric Company.

In our advertising columns, will be found a notice by the River Latrobe Hydro Electric Company intimating that in future they will have to prosecute offenders who kick the football into the wires.

The Melbourne Electric Supply Company recently stated that they were continually suffering loss through youths kicking footballs against the electric light wires.

stated last week that this bad habit caused the Council a loss of £12 a week through the wires fusing and the current being interfered with.

It is no wonder that the Warragul Electric Company wish to warn offenders that they will be prosecuted in future if boys persist in this dangerous habit.

The company has no wish to interfere with sport, but they feel that it is unfair that they should be constantly put to expense and danger through youths kicking footballs into contact with the wires. Many youths and boys are not aware that there is any danger.

But they will now know that trying to kick a football over the wires involves great danger to life and property.

WHERE ARE THEY?

SOMEWHERE in Gippsland were the two villages of Crookayon and Dolodrok which played in the Licola FA in 1908.

These two played each other twice at Brunnie Knob. Crookayon won both matches.

TRAINING THE HARD WAY

THORPDALE Football Club had plenty of trouble getting to the football in the early 1900’s.

They had to catch the local train to Moe, then board the main line train to Morwell, then change again for the Mirboo North line to get to Yinnar.

LEONGATHA WERE STATE CHAMPIONS

LEONGATHA became Victorian champions in 1924 when they defeated VFA premiers Footscray (who had beaten VFL premiers Essendon the week before).

Leongatha won 6.7 to Footscray 4.14 but the Footscray captain was critical of the conditions that the match was played in stating that his team were not water polo players referring to the water-logged Leongatha oval.

The daughter of Banjo Boy has been campaigning consistently in recent months and that reliability was on show as she justified her $1.50 quote in the James Yeates Printing & Design Mixed 4/5 (520m).

Madalia Maggie owned the race from the get-go, pouncing to the lead from box two and running a first split of 9.44 seconds.

In the end she prevailed by nearly four lengths in a time of 29.49 seconds.

Leo Rose ($2.20) made favourite backers sweat for the cash after a last-stride success in the Dunkley’s Machinery Restricted Win (520m).

The son of Fernando Bale edged out Maffra-trained Louranda by a nose in a keenly contest event where the first four runners across the line were separated by less than a length.

Leo Rose has now won four of his 28 career starts, with nine minor placings.

Madalia Maggie continued her good form on the program for Rosedale trainer John Connor.

Footy delivers some remarkable tales

IN 1903 at the AGM of the Trafalgar Football Club it was raised that admission for 1904 be sixpence (6d) for home games.

A member interjected saying that there were several places in the fence where sneaks could dodge the gatekeepers and get in without paying.

The committee suggested that a contractor be employed to fix the fence.

BOOZE AT THE FINALS

In 1947, for the first time it was decided to run a beer booth at the finals, so the Wonthaggi FL advertised for a hotel to run the booth.

No tenders were received so the WFL ran their own booth (and hot dog stand) and brought in valuable pounds to the league.

POLICE ROLLED OUT THE BARRELS

INVERLOCH’S celebration in winning its first premiership in 1953 in the Wonthaggi FL ended suddenly with a police raid on the weekend.

Names of officials and players were taken. Six plainclothes police from Yallourn raided the lantern-lit barbeque barn dance at Cape Patterson, near Wonthaggi.

They rolled three 18 gallon kegs and two nine gallon kegs from the hall amid shouts of “Shame.”

The police also seized two empty barrels, cartons of glasses and a gas cylinder.

The raid was the fourth by Central Gippsland police in the Wonthaggi district in recent weeks.

THE CHASE IS ON

FORMER Thorpdale/Yallourn/ Mirboo North footballer Robin (Buck) Moncur was chased off the field by a mob of 150 supporters in a match Yallourn versus Moe in 1969.

Moncur went to the aid of goal umpire David Drane who was being hassled by irate Moe supporters, but Moncur incurred the wrath of one of the Moe fans when he allegedly clipped him over the ears and then the chase was on.

Moncur made it safely to the dressing rooms before the crowd could reach him.

ONE CLUB - THREE LEAGUES

THE late Clarrie Swenson had the

True Blue: Thorpdale legend Mick Hammond. distinction of coaching Trafalgar FC in three different leagues.

He coached them in the Central Gippsland FL (1949-53), Latrobe Valley FL (1954-55) and the Mid Gippsland FL (1969).

BERNIE ON SONG

IN 1958, Erica Football Club (Mid Gippsland FL) were short of a player and so Mrs Bernie Rodgers stepped in to play in the vacant position.

She kicked one of Erica’s two goals against Yinnar, playing on the half forward flank.

She had been Erica’s boundary umpire for a number of years.

Her sister in law Judy Rodgers also ran the boundary and another woman was timekeeper.

TOO COLD TO PLAY

IN a match between Tarwin Valley andYinnar in 1930 both teams had to change in the hotel and then cross the road to the oval, but after halftime Yinnar’s Eric White and Rupert Rowbotham decided they had enough football for the day in the cold and wet and refused to come out of the pub for the second half.

Instead they spent the afternoon playing cards and drinking whisky.

Both were dropped for Yinnar’s next match.

BIG REUNION

THE former Maryvale Football Club had a reunion in February 2017 to mark the 30th anniversary of the demise of the club.

LONG SERVICE IN MGFL TRAFALGAR: Chris De Haas holds the record at Trafalgar for the most senior matches, he has played 332 senior games plus 82 reserves matches to reach 414 for the season 2017, only Paul Taylor 419 has the biggest tally.

MORWELL EAST: Darren Tatterson holds the record for seniors (253) and club (346) with Morwell East.

YYN: Wayne Paulet holds the record at YYN with 319 seniors while Rohan Bounds holds the club record of 411 matches.

THORPDALE: Lloyd Mackie holds the record of 332 senior games at Thorpdale while Michael (Mick) Hammond has the club record of 600.

DEATH OF A LEGEND IN 2020, former sports broadcaster Tony Osler passed away after a short illness.

Tony was well known in the Gippsland area with his radio work with 3GG and 3TR. He was also involved with the Herald Sun Bike Tour as the official racecaller.

He was the last of the big four of Gippsland sporting identities along with Kevin Hogan (ABC Gippsland), Clem Pitt (newspapers) and Tom Carter (journalist) who all were household names in Gippsland sports reporting.

Jeff’s in peak form DESPITE two months away from the green, Trafalgar golfer Jeff Hasthorpe has shot his age twice in the past fortnight.

Hasthorpe, who turns 73 in August, won the A-Grade stableford at Trafalgar on May 30 and June 6 with 39 points after carding rounds of 72 off the stick.

He shot better than his age for the first time in December last year and on current form looks likely to do it again.

“Once you get to my age it starts to enter your mind that the next major accomplishment is to try and beat your age,” he said.

“It’s a matter of finding your rhythm again (after a break)... sometimes you come back and feel good and other times you can start off after a break and you are struggling.

“Having not played for a couple of months I did not really know how I would go, but I got out there and my swing felt good and my chipping felt good, in golf if your putting or chipping is off it is not going to be a good game.

“There is no set reason that you do better after some

breaks than others, as long as you don’t have too many expectations and go out there and enjoy it you’re quite often going to do well.”

Hasthorpe was born and bred in Trafalgar and has been playing golf for about 60 years because he “was never big enough for football”.

“When I was growing up the lowest football team in Trafalgar was the thirds so I was never good enough for that, so I played golf instead,” he said.

Hasthorpe loves the game so much he even set up a couple of golf tees on his property when coronavirus restrictions meant he was not able to play at a club.

“In the end it was not very successful, it has been so wet that I could not play often. I only hit around 30 or 40 golf balls in the space of a couple of months,” Hasthorpe said.

“You miss the camaraderie with your mates, playing golf gives you a chance to catch up again, even if we can’t have a drink after the game at the moment.

“We take our golf seriously but we like to have a chat afterwards, it’s exercise and competition that is great, I still really like the competitive side of golf.”

Back in the swing of things: Jeff Hasthorpe, 72, has shot his age twice in the past fortnight.

MARY Edwards was the first person to create local running history with four consecutive Traralgon Marathon victories from 1986 to 1989.

Born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland, Mary said, “I have always loved sport - I was captain of the hockey club at school - and enjoyed pennant squash and running. I completed a degree in chemistry and worked for Imperial Chemical Industries in Cheshire before emigrating to Australia in 1977 with my husband and eight-week old baby. My second child was born in 1979”.

“I remember watching Robert De Castella run the Commonwealth Games marathon in 1982. I couldn’t imagine how it was possible to run such a distance and so, being a scientist I decided to find out by doing the experiment.

I had never really run before that but played squash and was reasonably fit.

“I started off running around the oval opposite my home in my squash shoes and gradually built up enough miles to venture a bit further. My aim was to run the Melbourne Marathon in October 1983. I didn’t tell anyone of my plan - I thought they would think I was crazy - until I had completed my first 20-mile run in July ‘83.

I finished the marathon in 3hrs 14mins 09 sec. Up until then I had trained on my own.”

“However, I met a few runners along the way and at the finish line. I then heard of and joined the Peninsula Road Runners and trained with Kon Butko and others. I trained mostly on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula where I live. From that point on

for the next nine years I more or less did marathon training all year with a long run every Sunday morning. I didn’t have a formal coach. I was always an early riser and did my training before the rest of the family was awake. I still played squash for a while and have always enjoyed walking, and still do”, Mary explained.

“After running my first Traralgon marathon in 1984 it became a favourite - mostly because of the warm welcome and friendly atmosphere.”

Mary was the third woman in 1984, three and a half minutes behind the winner, local runner Georgann Peterson (McEwan). The next year Georgann won again, five minutes faster, ahead of local Lee

Graham, but Mary did not run.

In 1986 in the field of 114 finishers that included eleven women Mary was first woman and 13th outright, a portent of things to come. She crossed the finish line beside her friend and training partner Kon Butko and his dog Scottie, all on 2:56:06.

Mary returned to part-time work with CSIRO in 1987, and in a year dominated by outsiders, achieved the second of her four straight successes at Traralgon. Running slower than her previous winning time, she held out Harrier and Maffra resident Shirley Kelly and Melbourne runner Claire Bowker.

1988 saw Mary win her third consecutive Traralgon Marathon.

THE decision to program an extra meeting at Moe on Sunday appears the right one after 439 nominations were taken for the scheduled seven-race card.

Racing Victoria decided late last week to add a new meeting due to the shortening of the annual Swan Hill Carnival from three days to one day due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In comparison, the other Victorian meeting at Ballarat on Sunday, which has been on the calendar for many months, received 535 nominations for a scheduled nine-race card.

With two maidens and five Rating 58 races on the program, the nominations rolled in.

The 1100m Maiden has attracted 88 nominations, while the 1600m Maiden received 62 nominations.

Of the five Rating 58 Handicaps, the 1200m event attracted 76 nominations.

Acceptances will be taken today and do not be surprised if an extra race or two is added to meet the sizeable demand.

The track was last rated a Soft 6 with the penetrometer at 5.57.

It will be the second meeting in the space of a week in the Gippsland region after Sale played host to a bumper nine-race card yesterday.

Latrobe Valley-based trainers Peter Gelagotis and Allison Bennett had runners on that program, and have nominated contenders for the Moe meeting.

again pushing Shirley Kelly into second place - Shirley returned in 1991 to win in a fast time.

Mary’s 1988 winning time is still the women’s race record. She said, “I still have my certificate for the 1988 Traralgon Marathon when I ran my personal best time of 2hrs 52mins 59secs. I considered it a training run, and took it easy, but I felt so good at the half-way mark I gave it my best to the finish. I didn’t expect such a quick time”.

And Mary declared she would return the following year and give it her best.

In 1989 Mary went back to full-time work. She said, “I didn’t have time to fit in so many miles after that, but most days I ran with a group of colleagues in my lunch hour”.

But despite less training Mary returned to win her fourth Traralgon Marathon, marginally slower than the previous year.

She had achieved the first streak of four Traralgon Marathon wins in a row - unheard of until then.

It was the first time in the history of the event. So despite giving the men a twenty-year start a woman runner achieved it first. But it was not the last.

The following year Mary’s incredible streak finished when ultra-distance world record holder Linda Meadows ran and won in 2:53:38, 39 seconds slower than Mary’s best time. Linda was outright 11th to win ahead of Mary, who ran 25 minutes outside of her race record time.

Now retired and with two grandchildren, Mary has been a volunteer at the Mornington Community and Information Centre for six years, and likes to walk, travel and read.

And more than 40 years after she settled in Australia Mary still speaks with her delightful Scottish accent.
