FLYING HIGH LATROBE Regional Airport’s future is ready to take off as council looks to grow grr development opportunities.

At its most recent meeting, Latrobe City adopted a key strategic document that sets out a four-year framework as part of a larger 20-year airport development plan for the council-owned facility.

The document considers new airport precincts, development opportunities and sets the requirements for future funding, government support and the timeline for aviation infrastructure upgr grades. r

Latrobe City Mayor Sharon Gibson said the developments could lead to the facility following a similar path to Avalon Airport, Aii near Geelong.

“I’d love to see it being the Avalon of the east,” Cr Gibson said.

“We’ve got a facility here, so let’s see how we can utilise it to the betterment of our community going forw rward. w “If it was done properly, it would actually be a great way forward for such a large catchment area.”

With population growth in south-east Melbourne and the wider Gippsland region, an airport boasting commercial

capacity would d provide an alternative to Tullamarine Air Aiirport and serv rvice v the travel needs of the reg gion’s i residents.

Latrobe Ree gional Airport board chairman Cr Graeme Middlemiss said commercial flights fll to Canberra and Sydney are on the radar.

“We get consttant demand from people for a serv rvice v tha at would be (the) Valley to Canberra, Sydn ney and return,” he told The Express.

Wind farm a hot topic

DIFFERENT perspectives on the merits of the Delburn Wind Farm remain as planning permit documentation is now available for public comment.

Proposed to be built in the Strzelecki Ranges, south of Morwell, the 33-turbine project would be the first of its kind in the Latrobe Valley.

Developers OSMI Australia submitted its applications for approval to build the farm to the Planning Minister in December 2020.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) requires OSMI to formally advise the community of these applications.

The company says notices have been posted to all landowners and residents within 5km of the project boundary, with various notices published in local newspapers including The Express.

The project has the support of environmental groups including Friends of the Earth and Strzelecki Sustainable Futures.

Friends of the Earth said this was a key moment for the community to shape the region’s renewable energy future.

“We regularly present proposals to passenger operators saying ‘we are ready if you think it would be viable, we are ready to start tomorrow’ so we’ve got our terminal in a situation where if anybody was interested in a passenger service, we are ready tomorrow.”

Latrobe Regional Airport once had a six-day a week service to Sydney via Albury which was later abandoned with the cessation of Hazelton Airlines in 2001.

Council is also looking to boost employment opportunities at the airport by attracting businesses who are looking to relocate their aircraft related operations.

Cr Middlemiss said increased rental prices at other airports could make Latrobe Regional Airport much more enticing to businesses struggling with additional pressure.

“Rents and pressure on tenants are increasing,” he said.

“In Moorabbin, where many of the minor aircraft industries are based, things like propellers, radios and repairs, we’re looking to say to these people if you are suffering cost stress down there, come up here.”

But not all groups are in favour of the wind farm, with the Strzelecki Community Alliance saying now is the opportunity for those who oppose the project to make their presence felt.

“The objection process is really easy! You can put in a simple objection or a complex objection.

It’s up to you. Just focus on why you object to the proposed wind farm and the terminal station and what the proposal may mean to you and others,” Alliance member Rosemary Parker wrote in a Letter to the Editor published in today’s edition of The Express.

VICTORIA has experienced a lockdown rollercoaster as current restrictions remain in place for another week.

Premier Daniel Andrews said the current restrictions imposed across the state would remain in force until 11.59pm on Tuesday, July 27.

Mr Andrews delivered the news on Tuesday after leaving the state’s fate in limbo on Monday when he announced lockdown would continue, but did not immediately commit to a timeframe.

“We have made great progress, lockdown was the right call, but we will not be ready to lift this lockdown at midnight tomorrow night,” he told media on Monday.

“It will be based on the information, the results of today’s interviews, the result of today’s testing that we will make a decision.”

State government ministers met early Tuesday morning and decided to extend the state’s lockdown for an additional week.

“We wish we could bring this in earlier, but we can’t run that risk,” Mr Andrews said.

“There are cases that we don’t know about … we need to see how quickly this runs.”

Fears are growing across Gippsland as the Gippsland Region Public Health Unit (GRPHU) reported one person had tested positive for coronavirus in Wellington Shire on Tuesday afternoon.

Thankfully, the case was in isolation while infectious and tested positive while in quarantine.

The GRPHU confirmed the Wellington case

contracted the virus from one of the major sport stadium exposure sites in Melbourne.

Three additional testing sites in Sale and Yarram were opened in response to the positive case.

“This is a prime example of how public health actions are working,” a GRPHU spokesperson said.

Police search uncovers cannabis Police Beat with Zac Standish

POLICE executed a search warrant on Tuesday, July 20 on Blair Athol Drive in Traralgon.

Investigators located several zip lock bags containing what is believed to be cannabis.

A 49-year-old woman was arrested and charged with possessing a drug of dependence. She was bailed and will attend court at a later date.

Emissions information will be published seven days a week on the EnergyAustralia website with Yallourn’s performance against particle pollution, and levels of carbon monoxide, nitrogen and sulphur dioxide emissions listed.

As well as daily reports, monthly summaries will also be posted online, and in the event of a licence breach, or a planned activity which may impact the community, it will be posted on EnergyAustralia’s Yallourn Facebook page.

EnergyAustralia’s Head of Yallourn Julian Turecek said he takes pride in Yallourn’s strong track record of improving environmental performance over time, supported by a highly skilled workforce and an extensive maintenance program.

“This year we’ve made significant investments to increase our continuous emissions monitoring capability to collect more data in real-time,” he said.

“Conducting this work and making our

emissions data publicly available, we hope to provide members of the local community with greater transparency, continue to build their trust and be a good neighbour.

“Our emissions are consistently below the EPA’s required levels and it’s important to us that the Latrobe Valley community has confidence in our operations,” he said.

Mr Turecek added that EnergyAustralia remains focused on running Yallourn reliably and safely as an essential part of the electricity supply system for all Victorians until its orderly retirement in mid-2028.

“Our approach is aimed at balancing care for the environment, meeting community standards, and ensuring Yallourn continues to serve its role in powering homes and businesses.

“We also have a big job ahead of us as the Latrobe Valley’s energy transition continues, with the careful retirement of Yallourn in mid-2028 and bringing online Australia’s first four-hour utility-scale battery of 350 MW capacity by 2026.

We know we’re up to the task, and we’re absolutely committed to taking the local community on this journey with us,” he said.

LATROBE City Council has made a submission to the Parliamentary inquiry into the closure of the Hazelwood and Yallourn power stations, requesting greater government support through the transition.

The inquiry is being held by the Legislative Council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee and will assess the impacts of the closures on the economy and jobs in the Latrobe Valley.

It also focuses on the expected economic impacts of the Yallourn closure in 2028 which will likely result in the loss of 1000 direct jobs.

Latrobe City has also highlighted concerns about the limited consultation with council and the local community post-Hazelwood, and the lack of transition planning focused on diversifying employment opportunities.

Council’s submission recommends five key points that the state government should consider.

Firstly, that the state government consults with council and the community about future government measures to aid the region’s economic transitioning.

Engage in discussions for transition planning through the Latrobe City Transition Taskforce.

Invest and provide support for key industries to facilitate economic and job growth.

Remove redundant coal protection overlays in Morwell North West/Maryvale East and Area H to support further development of this land for diverse industries.

Lastly, to deliver strategic investment to enable utility services and infrastructure.

Latrobe City Mayor Sharon Gibson said that while council did acknowledge the assistance the state government provided during the closure

of Hazelwood, it did not address the long-term impacts of the closure.

“What we are saying is that it was part of the equation but not all of it, it didn’t address long term secure jobs and industry, we have to replace industry and that hasn’t occurred as of yet and we need to do that,” she told The Express.

Cr Gibson is hopeful the council’s submission as well as the overall inquiry will allow all levels of government to be better equipped at dealing with the resulting job losses when Yallourn Power Station closes.

“You can take 2000 jobs away from that (Hazelwood’s) closure and another 1000 here (at Yallourn), but you can’t keep going down that track without replacing them,” she said.

“We have to learn, nobody is perfect, we’ve gone down the track of closing the power station and we are looking at doing another one, what were

the parts that were wrong and what can we do to change that, and what parts that were right and can we actually improve on that.”

The submission announcement ties in to the establishment of the Latrobe City Transition Taskforce which aims to advocate for bi-partisan support from all levels of government in the Valley’s transition away from traditional forms of energy production.

Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath has encouraged locals to also provide submissions to the inquiry.

“The Yallourn announcement created more uncertainty off the back of Hazelwood’s closure and the Andrews government’s diabolical plan to close Victoria’s native timber industry,” Ms Bath said.

“This Inquiry is an opportunity for locals to drive the process and be a catalyst for positive change, as submissions form the basis of the report.”

New measures touted as a coupe

THE state government says it has beefed up its resources to combat illegal invasions of native forest coupes amidst the unrelenting financial and emotional impact caused by protesters’ actions.

It has added more ‘authorised officers’ and specialised equipment to help them respond to the “illegal disruption of timber harvesting activities”.

There are now 22 authorised officers, with 19 based in the regions.

A spokeswoman for the Minister for Agriculture and Regional Development, Mary-Anne Thomas, said the specialised equipment included thermal imaging equipment, a dedicated support trailer for use in support of Victoria Police search and rescue operations, and access to drone technology.

According to the state government, there are current maximum fines (adjusted annually for inflation) under the Sustainable Forests (Timber) Act 2004.

These are 20 penalty units ($3317.60) for refusing or failing to leave a native forest coupe when directed by an Authorised Officer; 20 penalty units ($3317.60) for failing to stop or move a vehicle in a coupe; and 60 penalty units ($9952.80) for breaking down, damaging or destroying a fence erected in a coupe.

The spokeswoman said since January 1 last year, most protests had been resolved on the day they began, except for protests requiring specialist rescue teams.

Since the same date, authorised officers had issued 100 penalty infringement notices to forest protesters, including 31 penalty infringement notices issued since January 1 this year.

This year, seven protesters had been charged with an offence to hinder, obstruct or interfere with timber harvesting operations and were due to appear in court, she said.

The Opposition Spokesman for Forestry, Gary Blackwood, said these measures were the very least that hardworking forest workers deserved from the state government.

“This has been completely disrupted by feral green activists taking over coupes and endangering the lives of forest workers and themselves,” he said.

Mr Blackwood said the protesters’ action had forced VicForests to move to other harvest

areas, causing lost time for contractors and their employees.

“On top of this, greens’ court action has removed around 60 per cent of coupes on the Timber Release Plan. We now have a situation where sawmills are running out of supply and may well have to stand down their employees for some months until deliveries can resume,” he said.

“The Andrews Government must honour the

promises they made in their Forestry Plan and if this means locking up feral activists and shutting down third party litigation, it has to be a priority.

“The lives and livelihood of legitimate forest workers should never be compromised, they must be protected by the Andrews Government.”

VicForests chief executive officer Monique Dawson, told a recent Senate hearing that VicForests lost coupes almost on a weekly basis through protest action.

This included ‘black wallaby’, where protesters hid in undergrowth and leapt out.

Ms Dawson said this happened at a coupe near Bendoc in April.

“Protesters in that coupe hid in undergrowth and leapt out in front of an active timber harvester and attached themselves to the head of the harvester,” she said.

“Not only is that incredibly frightening for our harvesters, but those protesters who attached themselves to the head of a hydraulic machine was cooling, and when hydraulics are cooling, they actually operate by themselves.

“One of the protesters put himself under the harvester head. We were telling them they were at risk of being crushed …. And their position was to laugh it off and to suggest that we were saying that because we wanted them to unattach.

“But it was a very dangerous situation, compounded by there being a child of about two years old who was taken along to the couple by her parents.”

Queried by Labor Senator Raff Ciccone, Ms Dawson said a child was wandering around without supervision near the incident, near where people were attached to the harvester.

“It was, frankly, a terrifying situation,” she said.

Steel spikes were recently found driven into a road in the East Gippsland forest that is used by forest workers and the public, an act described as “eco-terrorism” by the State Opposition.

Musical Matilda about to hit the local stage

THE highly regarded stage musical, Matilda, is set to be presented by Gippsland Grammar.

A cast of 40 senior students from the local independent school have been rehearsing all year alongside a talented orchestra boasting staff and students.

It is a stage musical based on the 1988 children’s novel of the same name by Roald Dahl. It was adapted

by Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.

Matilda (played by Year 9 student Georgia Steel) is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey (Ashton Hicks, Year 12).

Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other’s lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognise but also appreciate Matilda’s extraordinary personality.

Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however – the school’s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull (Joshua Hanratty, Year 11), hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules.

Uplift for Centenary House

GIPPSLAND Rotary Centenary House has received a real uplift with the acquisition of an important item of health and safety equipment through the co-operation of two local Rotary Clubs and a grant from the local district.

The Rotary Clubs of Moe and Morwell each contributed $1500, which was matched dollar for dollar by the Rotary District to enable the purchase of an elevating work platform, valued at $6000, for use in the House.

Centenary House operations manager Carol Crewe said the work platform would prove a great asset.

“This is a very important addition to the facility as it will enable staff and volunteers who undertake maintenance, to access high areas of the building in a safe manner without the risk of climbing on ladders,” Ms Crewe said.

“Cleaning skylights, changing high light globes and accessing ceiling areas can now be done in a completely safe and convenient way. We are most grateful for this generous gift from the two local Rotary Clubs.”

Rotary Club of Moe president Di Harrison said that this was a good example of cooperation between clubs to ensure that our joint contributions could be more effective in purchasing a major item of equipment than separate donations.

“We are very pleased to be part of this project,” Ms Harrison said.

These sentiments were endorsed by the Rotary Club of Morwell president Mike Answerth.

“We have had a good working relationship with our friends at Moe for some time now and this is yet another case of a joint exercise enabling us to achieve something that may not have been possible individually. We are also pleased to have the assistance of District 9820 in matching our donations,” Mr Answerth said.

Remote Learning 5.0 is hitting home AS a working mother, I am struggling.

The amount of work that is issued on a daily basis, gives me anxiety before I have even finished reading it.

I can only imagine what my 10-year-old is thinking reading her ‘Daily Planner’.

Being a parent is trying on the best of days let alone being their teacher also.

Sometimes my older child can whiz through her tasks and be finished in three hours, other days we all get hit with a ‘massive meltdown’ and nothing ends up getting achieved for the day.

My younger child needs constant supervision and assistance with every task he attempts, while I try to ‘work from home’.

It such a big expectation on us as parents to ensure the work is all being completed and uploaded on a daily basis, and if it’s not, we receive a please explain from the teacher.

I’m not blaming the teachers for the amount of work issued, or even the School.

The system of ‘Remote Learning’ is not working…

By Lockdown 5.0, shouldn’t we have a better system in place? Why can’t we have a classroom type setting set up for the children with their teachers via Zoom etc?

We are still paying our school fees, yet our kids aren’t in attendance? No refunds are being issued from the school unless we can prove financial hardship, but I am working, trying to juggle that and assisting my children with their learning…

Some days I think, I am not doing this anymore the kids can just enjoy having some time off, but then the guilt sets in….Will they be behind? Am I not doing a good job as a parent? But how can I keep juggling all of this?

Not like the person who has Macca’s or Hungry Jacks etc on a regular basis 3-5 times a week and throws the leftovers and packaging out along Guyatts Rd. Hard to understand why you would do that?

Unless you don’t want your other family members to know your special treat is a regular and how much you spend on this junk food.

Surely it is much easier to put it in a bin.

RECENTLY the Royal Flying Doctor Service guys came to me in response of request for ambulance services.

These three guys, Craig, Naz and James were the most gentle, caring and courteous that I have ever come across.

They did what they had to do at home and then transported me to Latrobe Regional Hospital.

The three of them looked after me until I was given a bed and they never left me all the time I waited.

Thank you James for sitting with me while I was waiting for a bed and for holding my hand and putting me at ease.

I cannot thank the Royal Flying Doctor Service for having three guys like these working for them – they go about their job and go over and above their duty to take care of us.

No sense in the sacking of Mr Chester

RECENT letter writers have tried to make sense of Darren Chester’s sacking at the hands of Barnaby Joyce by blaming Chester himself.

In their desperation to discredit Chester, they refer to anonymous sources and claims he wasn’t doing his job but that’s not the feedback from exservice organisations and the mainstream media.

Here’s what respected Canberra press gallery journalist Denis Shanahan had to say about the sacking, and note, he actually puts his name to the story.

“Chester was the minister for veterans affairs – a position he loved and a job he undertook with diligence and the support of almost everyone representing returned servicemen and women.

“The peak bodies covering veterans – the Alliance

of Defence Service Organisations, the Australian Defence Association and the Defence Force Welfare Association – urged Joyce not to dump Chester.

This didn’t matter. Chester’s card was marked the moment he made it clear he didn’t want Joyce back and was sticking with Michael McCormack.

“Dumping Chester is the worst and ugliest act of nasty vengeance in the Joyce ministerial “reshuffle”.

A popular, hardworking and successful minister is pushed out of the way for someone of less experience and talent – in this case central New South Wales politician Andrew Gee – who failed to make any impression as junior minister for decentralisation and regional education.

“If you want a brutal example of why the public hate politics and politicians, just look at the way Chester has been treated. It’s an act of bastardry with no justification and no redeeming feature.”

So please stop trying to blame our local Member of Parliament for being the victim of another Barnaby Joyce act of revenge.

Give Mr Chester a fair go

OBVIOUSLY Matt Tudor and Marcia Davidson (The Express, Letters) enjoy assassinating a personal character, even though they don’t know Darren Chester personally.

If they did, they would value his honest and compassionate nature, a loyal Australian who devotes his time and energy not only to the Gippsland electorate, but to the lives of the returning Armed Forces.

Donation draws attention

I’M writing in regards to Chunxing’s recent $10,000 donation to the Traralgon Lions Club.

I think it’s a disgrace that the Lions Club accepted this “donation” as the community is against the smelter.

I also find it very convenient that the Traralgon Lions Club president Dale Harriman was one of the councillors that voted yes for the lead smelter.

This has to be a serious conflict of interest.

The community is urging the Traralgon Lions Club to give back the “donation” and say NO to this lead smelter.

Existential crisis has arrived

LATROBE Valley Sustainability Group has been banging on about climate change for more than 10 years.

We are now facing an existential crisis and the Earth’s sixth great mass extinction.

Along with the Morrison Government’s refusal to declare a net zero by 2050 target, Australia will have to confront additional economic challenges.

Carbon border taxes will be imposed by the EU in 2023 and USA in 2025, meaning that countries that do not have an effective carbon price and other strategies to get to net zero will be penalised.

Unfortunately, Australian exports could become uncompetitive as the recent report from UN-backed Sustainable Development Solutions ranked Australia as dead last out of 193 nations for climate change action.

The EU and USA have imposed the carbon border tax to protect their industries against those countries which have not incurred the cost of converting to renewable energy, installing new infrastructure and new generation such as solar and wind.

Australia is squarely in their sites because of government inaction on climate change.

It is not as if we can turn to our Asian trading partners, given that China is set to impose a carbon trading scheme and Japan, Vietnam and Korea are getting serious about reducing their own carbon emissions.

This week, western Europe has suffered from devastating floods.

Western USA and Canada have experienced prolonged drought, a Pacific heat dome with temperatures up to 49.5 degrees and widespread intense bushfires which wiped out towns.

They will be in no mood to cut us any slack when it comes to the carbon border taxes.

The Morrison Government is sadly negligent when it comes to dealing with the future climate.

The COVID ‘gas-led’ recovery is based on fracking more of the Northern Territory and NSW and building a pipeline to the new $600 million Kurri Kurri gas fired power station in the Hunter Valley.

This is not the ‘technology-led’ recovery fit for the 21st century, when the need to reduce emissions is urgent.

The Australian government needs to stop subsiding coal and gas developments, incentivise

the transition from fossil fuels to renewables and to enact laws that smooth the way for enabling electricity grid upgrades, pumped hydro storage and especially for offshore wind development, as well as facilitating the roll out of zero emissions transport.

The Star of the South wind farm in Bass Strait is being held up at the moment, because Federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor is delaying enacting laws to guide offshore wind development in Commonwealth waters.

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce is obviously not going to help either.

The present actions of the Morrison Government will see our living standards fall as well as threatening our precious natural heritage, not to mention our international reputation.

Please consider this when it comes time to vote in the looming Federal election.

Forest ruined at taxpayers’ expense

I’M sick of paying for VicForests to bulldoze our forest when the $20 million a year they’re losing could instead go to creating new local apprentice jobs and facilities.

Taxpayer-owned VicForests’ losses have quadrupled across four years, from $5 million to $20 million a year, because each year the trucks drive the bulldozers further to bulldoze forest with less and less big, old trees in it.

This year’s loss will be bigger.

Official federal government (ABARES) figures now show only 13 per cent of the wood logged becomes “sawn timber”.

The rest is woodchips and sawdust. In 2010, mills were asked if they’d pay the actual cost for the timber instead of the subsidised cost - they said “No”.

VicForests’ logging crews are already paid as machine firefighters in summer, using the skills and machinery they already have.

Time for them to do this full time as fire seasons lengthen with climate change, and for mills to modernise, which they should have done years ago instead of relying on taxpayers to bail them out too.

Lord knows bushfires are destroying the forest as

well as the bulldozers. Bulldoze local forests, or fix local facilities?

What could $20 million a year do for jobs and community facilities in towns/places like Yarram, Alberton and Longford/Morwell, Glengarry and Tyers?

Donation nothing more than a “softening up” tactic

I WAS saddened to read the article “Donation warmly welcomed” (The Express 8/7/21) which showed Janine Angus and Dale Harriman receiving a donation for $10,000 from Chunxing, the company that plans to bring a lead smelter to the Latrobe Valley.

We have now seen a range of “softening up” tactics being used by Chunxing, and the company’s local supporters (including Cr Harriman), in an attempt to woo a community that may not have yet received fully reliable facts about the dangers of lead (especially for children), the amount of lead

It puts Cr Harriman in a poor light and threatens the integrity of our local community.

Meanwhile, no parents in Latrobe Valley will be absolutely sure of their growing children’s safety, without getting their children’s blood tested regularly. It is a disgraceful outcome.

Smelter in the wrong place

I AM wondering if the wider community are aware of the extremely high water content over ground where Chunxing want to build their lead battery smelter.

Are the community aware of what dangers can arise if such an industry is flooded and or power outage?

Are the wider community also aware that blood testing for lead content on a regular basis will be part of their future living in Latrobe Valley.

Think about it and do some research.

There is nothing positive about this industry.

The battles Australians must never forget

THIS month marks the 105th anniversary of two very significant and devastatingly costly battles fought by Australians on the Western Front during the First World War - the Battle of Fromelles and the Battle of Pozières.

On July 19, we remembered the Battle of Fromelles, a battle that lasted 24 hours but tragically resulted in 5533 Australian casualties, making it the single bloodiest day in our military history.

Just a few days later, on July 23, the Battle of Pozières commenced and lasted six weeks.

In the Battle of Pozières Australian soldiers achieved success, capturing and holding the village of Pozières, gradually pushing the Germans back.

However it was another extraordinarily brutal and costly battle for Australia, with more than 23,000 casualties.

Tragically, of the almost 300,000 Australians who served on the Western Front, 45,000 lost their lives.

We must never forget the selfless service, courage and sacrifice of those men and women who served our nation in the First World War. It was a conflict which devastated a generation of Australians. That enormous loss, suffering and pain has echoed through the years and is still felt to this day.

Sacred Heart Primary students make a genuine impact

THE Big Idea is an avenue that is used to draw understanding from several different learning areas.

Sacred Heart Primary School students spent a day in crossaged rotation groups looking at how things around them make

an impact. Impact was the Big Idea for Term 2.

Children explored music and colour in artwork and their responses to the sounds.

They considered the impact of helping their community post storms and floods.

They were empowered even as students in discussions about their own impact by recycling, planting a veggie garden and composting.

Fun activity: Yien, Annabel and Emmy made Truffula pom pom pencils based on the book The Lorax which chronicles the human impact on the environment. photographs supplied

Students learnt about the impact of natural disasters and made connections with the recent storms and flooding and how the human spirit’s actions can make a positive impact.

Finally the students participated in an activity centred on ‘Heal Country’.

NAIDOC Week fell during the school holidays this year but that didn’t stop Lumen Christi Catholic Primary School to stop and remember the first people of our land.

They invited local Aboriginal Elder, Helen Treadgold, or as the children call her, Aunty Helen, to visit the school.

The theme this year was: ‘Heal Country’.

Country is the true identity of our First Nations people.

“It sustains life in every aspect for them spiritually, physically, emotionally, socially, and culturally,” a Lumen Christi school spokesperson said.

The “Heal Country” theme befitted the hardships faced by Aunty Helen in her early years and the skills she picked up as part of her own healing.

She spoke about how she overcame many hardships and personal challenges by finding a passion for art.

It wasn’t until her fifties that she did a TAFE course in Churchill.

This course unleashed her artist talents and gave her a new passion.

Through art, she connected with her Aboriginal story and started to paint Aboriginal themed artwork.

She uses various mediums as well as possum skins to tell stories and paints murals.

Helen has artwork displayed at the Latrobe Regional Hospital, Latrobe City Council offices and Latrobe Community Health. Latrobe City Council have recently commissioned her to complete a series gathering stories on three possum skins that will be displayed for the public this year.

She has also been commissioned to paint for many people around the world including Japan where they requested carved artwork on the Boab Tree nuts.

Aunty Helen shared her carved Boab Tree artwork and the story of the Boab Prison Tree and the connection to her family in Western Australia.

The children of the school during their religious education and NAIDOC Week classes learnt about respect and the human dignity of every person despite their race, colour or religion.

They were taught to embrace diversity as this makes for a richer country and stronger country.

“Country is family, kin, law, ceremony, traditions; just like our Catholic Church, traditions and stories hold close to our heart,’’ the school spokesperson said.

A whole school mass was then dedicated to our NAIDOC Week theme which showcased some of Aunty Helen’s artwork.

Aunty Helen is planning to visit the school again once restrictions have eased and paint a school mural with her grandchildren that attend the school.

IT is not often that on a weekend where no football is played you will see a side slip from third to fifth place on the ladder.

But if this season of the North Gippsland Football Netball League has taught us anything it is to expect the unexpected.

And so it was that with what was meant to be the NGFNL’s Round 12 being abandoned that the reigning premier, Churchill, dropped two places on the league ladder without so much as a ball being kicked.

NGFNL by-laws state that in the event a round is not played, as occurred last Saturday, all teams scheduled to play are awarded two points.

Meanwhile teams scheduled for a bye receive none.

So in addition to Churchill not receiving any points last week, Heyfield and Cowwarr, also scheduled for a Round 12 bye, stayed as they were while those around them on the ladder were awarded a pair of points. With Heyfield and Cowwarr out of finals contention however the impact was negligible for those clubs unlike Churchill.

With COVID lockdowns likely to impact several more rounds between now and the commencement of finals it will be interesting to see how significant the impact of this law is on the finals make-up.

If we fast forward a fortnight Round 14 might well see the next big shuffle up caused by this with three of the top four sides scheduled to have the bye.

With all due respect to Gormandale their winless season to date negates any impact the bye might have this week with the Tigers the only team schedule to not play.

In a statement yesterday, the NGFNL said it would stick to the current revised draw structure which it believes “is a critical aspect to ensure the allocation of club byes are maintained and fall equitably”.

“We will continue that pattern of action and application until we can return to play with crowd numbers and compliance policy at an acceptable operational level,” the statement read.

“The timeline for our finals at this stage remains unaltered. We will share more detail about finals once we have some clarity around the current lockdown situation and possible crowd restrictions going forward.”

Ainsworth impresses as Suns push the Bulldogs FOOTBALL

MORWELL’S Ben Ainsworth was a standout for the Gold Coast Suns on Saturday afternoon as they took the premiership fancy Western Bulldogs right down to the wire in what was an enthralling game at Metricon Stadium.

Continuing his good form since returning to the senior team, Ainsworth kicked an equal game high three goals, took seven marks and laid two tackles as the Suns small forwards made life difficult for the Bulldogs defenders.

Using the ball at an impressive 88 per cent efficiency, his elite skills and decision making had a big impact on how the Suns moved the ball and proved that this team is much better when he is out on the park.

It was a quieter afternoon for Gold Coast teammate and Moe local Sam Flanders, who after an excellent run of form found himself unable to have a big impact against the Western Bulldogs.

Picking up just the nine disposals, it was encouraging to see his pressure was still high laying five

tackles and he will without a doubt be better for the experience of lining up against the Bulldogs’ star-studded midfield.

St Kilda missed out on a golden opportunity to move into the top eight after falling to Port Adelaide in a tight encounter at Marvel Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

After a season-best performance against Brisbane last week, Tim Membrey was unable to replicate that influence on this match, with the accomplished Port defence keeping the dangerous forward in check.

Venturing up the ground on a number of occasions, he would pick up 11 disposals, five marks and two tackles, but was unable to have any true scoreboard impact with a return of 0.1.

Trafalgar’s Leo Connolly continued his acclimatisation to AFL football with a solid performance across half back in his fourth senior game.

Collecting 12 disposals, two marks and two tackles, the feature of the 19-year-old’s game was his ball use as he was seen hitting crucial targets coming out of defence and ended up with a disposal efficiency of 92 per cent.

Our Olympic history in focus Snell won silver in 2004 and 2008, followed by a bronze in 2012.

Playing as a guard and forward, Snell was a key contributor to the Opals, who reached the gold medal play-off at successive Olympics.

Away from the Olympics Snell also won gold medals on home soil at the Melbourne 2006 and Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

At club level Snell has put together a sizeable CV, highlighted by a WNBA championship in 2007.

She is perhaps best remembered for a ridiculous clutch moment at the London 2012 games.

With Australia looking like they were headed for certain defeat she famously hit a miraculous three-pointer from beyond half way in the preliminary match against France to force the game into overtime - the ball was literally in mid-air as the final siren blew.

WITH country football again on hiatus, the Four Quarters team thought it would change tact slightly this week.

The Olympics are underway, and as such an array of sports will dominate newspapers and television screens for the next few weeks.

Many readers may have fond memories of the torch relay making its way through the Latrobe Valley for the 2000 Sydney games.

An estimated 15,000 people saw the torch arrive at Kernot Hall, Morwell and 10,000 packed the Joe Carmody Athletics Track in Newborough as the community cauldron was lit.

Due to the Sydney games commencing on September 15, local football grand finals had to be brought forward.

The Gippsland League played its decider on September 9 while the North Gippsland Football-Netball League held its grand final at the incredibly early date of August 12.

So, with the Olympics in mind, here are some home-grown athletes to have represented Australia on the world stage.

SPORT: Basketball.

OLYMPICS: Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012.

4. Gavin Chester (Sale)

1. Tim Forsyth (Thorpdale)

IN an area where the majority of people are seen jumping down from tractors and trucks as opposed to jumping up, it seems incredibly bizarre to think the tiny country town of Thorpdale produced an Olympic high jumper.

That was indeed the case for Tim Forsyth though when he claimed a bronze medal in the 1992 Barcelona games with a jump of 2.34 metres.

Taking up athletics while a student at Trafalgar High School, the region was swept up in Olympic fever at the time. Giles Arcade Trafalgar was decked out in green and gold, while staff and students from Trafalgar High were glues to the television screen.

At just 18 years of age, the 1.99 centimetre Forsyth’s emotions went from disappointment to euphoria in the final when a scoring error was detected after his third and final jump at 2.37 metres took him to third place and a bronze medal.

The achievement meant Forsyth became the first Australian to win an Olympic medal in high jump for 36 years.

For a brief period he made potatoes the second most famous thing to come out of Thorpdale, and he was greeted to a hero’s reception when he returned home as some 60 residents lined his driveway.

Parents Jim and Jan were in Barcelona during the final, and according to grandmother May Forsyth of Thorpdale were “almost speechless” when they phoned through.

After 1992 Forsyth featured in two more Olympics and won gold at the 1994 Commonwealth Games.

He beat his own Australian record when he cleared 2.36m which to this day has only been equalled.

Interestingly, the man who equalled that mark is Brandon Starc, brother of the Australian cricketer.

Forsyth’s father Jim played 29 games for Essendon and coached Thorpdale, Drouin and Trafalgar, leading the Blues to their last senior premiership in 1985.

The senior Forsyth was still living in Thorpdale until retiring and selling his farm two years ago.

SPORT: High jump.

OLYMPICS: Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000.

2. Julian Paynter (Moe) LONG distance runner Julian Paynter lived in Moe and represented Australia at the 1996 games in the United States city of Atlanta.

He was eliminated in the semifinals of the men’s 5000 metre at the games after setting a personal best of 13 minutes-24 seconds a year prior.

Born in Edinburgh, a hamstring injury prevented Paynter from going to the Sydney games, but he was given the honour of carrying the Olympic torch through Moe and Newborough in 2000.

“Not many people get to carry the Olympic torch and few get to light the community cauldron, so it is definitely something I will remember for the rest of my life,” he told The Express at the time.

In Morwell, Senior Sergeant John Brookes lit the community cauldron at Kernot Hall, as players from the Morwell Football Club Thirds formed a guard of honour for Brookes, who was their coach at the time.

A huge fireworks display followed the occasion at Kernot Hall.

The Latrobe Valley had a striking presence in Sydney, as it supplied buses with Latrobe City branding to help get people around.

SPORT: Long distance running.

OLYMPICS: Atlanta 1996.

3. Belinda Snell (Mirboo North) AUSTRALIAN basketballer Belinda Snell enjoyed a prolific career, winning multiple Olympic medals with the Opals.

Hailing from Mirboo North,

CLUTCHING at straws a bit with this left field selection, but happy to include it for the story alone.

Equestrian show jumper Gavin Chester does have some connection to the Latrobe Valley, being the cousin of Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.

Gavin Chester’s road to the 2000 Olympics was unique in the sense that he had to wait 20 years to make his debut.

“I was pretty lucky I got to go to the Sydney Olympics,” he said.

“I actually first got picked for Moscow in 1980 when I was 20, but we didn’t get to go because the government wouldn’t let us (because of the boycott following the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan). So it took 20 years for me to get the opportunity to go again.”

As his Olympic dream was snatched from his grasp all those years ago, the Sydney games presented an extraordinary postscript, as Chester competed at the ripe old age of 41, making him one of the oldest competitors on show.

Olympic equestrian events are unique in a way, as the athletes’ path to entry depends mostly on the quality of horse they have at their disposal.

“Getting to the Olympics a lot of things need to line up - you to have a good horse at the right time and it needs to be sound and healthy and performing well as you do as a rider,” Chester explained.

“That’s why horses are so expensive, because there are families if they’ve got to pay $5 million for their daughter to go to the Olympics, they’ll do it.

“You know at any given time if you’ve got the right horse and a lot of times throughout the years riders have been capable - they just haven’t had the right horse - so it’s quite brutal in that regard.”

While at the Olympic Village Chester ran into some prominent names, including tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams, who he simply described as “bloody huge”.

SPORT: Showjumping.

OLYMPICS: Sydney 2000.

On the ball Express reporters Zac Standish and Liam Durkin run the rule over the past week in footy ZS: Just when you thought the season was going along smoothly along came another lockdown.

LD: They are all demoralising, but this one more so because we are so close to finals across the leagues.

ZS: And it’s set to continue.

LD: The patience of people is certainly wearing thin, fancy doing two full pre-seasons for 10 games.

ZS: Trying to redo a fixture now would be a task in itself.

LD: Especially in the Gippsland League, teams have still not played each other once.

ZS: Mid Gippsland tossed up a few ideas including losing the pre-finals bye and playing finals as planned or keeping the bye and pushing everything back a week.

LD: They’re decision to only play a 13 round season in case of further lockdowns and hold some weeks up their sleeve now looks like a masterstroke.

ZS: North Gippsland declared all games in the round a draw and awarded everyone two points except Churchill who had the bye.

LD: Surely just awarding no points would make the most sense.

ZS: You would feel hard done by if you were Churchill, who have gone down the ladder as a result.

LD: A similar thing happened to our seconds cricket team last season. They had the bye on the round that was cancelled due to lockdown and every team got two points for a draw except us.

ZS: Just thinking the next few AFL drafts could be interesting.

LD: It might not come to anything, but given kids at a critical age have missed so much footy in their development during the last two years you wouldn’t be too surprised if the talent pool gets incredibly compromised.

ZS: It extends to other age groups too.

LD: Absolutely, most players hit their peak between 25 and 28, they’ve been cut down in their prime through no fault of their own.

ZS: Did you see that interesting suggestion down Colac way?

LD: Every game is sudden death until there is a winner. First versus tenth, second versus ninth and so on. Bit of last man standing.

ZS: Speaking of last man standing we might as well talk Olympics. You had a chance meeting with Olympic gold medallist Steven Bradbury a couple of years ago?

LD: When I was working in Sale at the Gippsland Times I got to interview him before he gave a motivational speech.

ZS: Everyone knows what happened in the race, but was there something else that stood out?

LD: I asked him a question about being lucky and he made a valid point when he said “you need a lot more than luck to get to the final of the Olympic Games.”

ZS: Very true. Getting local footy back would be like winning gold at the Olympics for some people.

LD: Hopefully there is a reprieve soon.

Olympic wait now over for LV trio OLYMPICS

OF the 487 athletes from 33 sports that will be representing Australia in Tokyo for the Olympics, Latrobe Valley locals will be watching the performances of three people even more closely.

Girl power will be on display as the Latrobe Valley trio of Aoife Coughlan, Jenna O’Hea and Teagan Micah fight to add to Australia’s medal tally.

All have worked incredibly hard to realise their Olympic dreams, and act as an inspiration to all youngsters in perseverance, commitment and determination.

Traralgon-born basketballer Jenna O’Hea will carry the ultimate honour of leading the country in her chosen sport, in what will be her second Olympic Games after making her debut at London in 2012.

The 34-year-old already has an Olympic bronze medal to her name, and as captain of the team, will take confidence into the games after the Opals defeated the highly fancied USA in an exhibition game just last week. O’Hea’s leadership qualities appear to be self-evident, as the team has stayed united despite the very public withdrawal of superstar Liz Cambage just days out from the games.

The Opals, who are ranked second in the world behind the US, have been placed in Group C along with Puerto Rico, China and Belgium.

O’Hea will be working closely with head coach Sandy Brondello, who said the team would be aiming to create their own piece of history.

“This Opals playing group are going to Tokyo wanting to win Australia’s first ever women’s basketball gold medal at an Olympic Games and we have the talent to do it,” she said.

“We know our effort and execution needs to match our ambition and we look forward to making Australia proud in Tokyo.

“An Olympic campaign is always tough and all three groups pose their own unique challenges. It’s certainly good to know who we are playing in the preliminary round and from a coaching point of view, we can gather information and start scouting those teams.

However, our primary focus is on ourselves and being the best we can be, leaving no stone unturned in our preparation and peaking at the right time.”

Playing as a guard and forward, O’Hea has been a mainstay in the Australian team since 2009 and also won gold at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in 2018.

FELLOW Traralgon local Aoife Coughlan will make her Olympic debut at Tokyo in the sport of Judo.

Hailing from Irish parents Paul and Jean and following in the footsteps of her brother Eoin, who attended the 2016 Games in Rio, Aoife will continue her family’s Olympic legacy when she hits the mat later and serves as one of just a handful of Latrobe Valley born athletes flying the flag for the region on the global stage.

Coughlan said it was a surreal feeling to finally be recognised as an Olympian.

“It is so exciting and I am just so proud to be part of the Australian team.”

Tokyo had always been a long term goal for Coughlan, with the games falling perfectly in the middle of her prime age bracket.

The 25-year-old outlined her mindset heading into this period and the setbacks that COVID caused her in achieving her dream.

“For me Tokyo was the first one I had a proper run at, I was still young and developing prior to Rio so I went on all the preparation camps with those Olympians but 2020 was my goal,” g l ” she h said. id “(COVID) wa as a pretty big hurdle in the process p and caused a masssive break in competition, sp pecifically being from Vicctoria we were in lockdown for an extended peeriod compared to th he rest of the country so it was mentally quite q draining.

“However, att the end of the day it was a bit of a blessiing g in disguise beccause gest it was the long period I have got g to spend at homee in the past two yearss and I really got to cooncentrate on my strrength g and fitness as well as my technique – so when

we were able to restart competition I had a power of work behind me and I ended up performing a lot better.”

A talented multi-sport athlete all through her childhood, Coughlan said growing up in the Latrobe Valley laid a solid foundation in her pathway to the elite level of Judo.

“I played heaps of sports when I was younger but Judo was always a family thing for me, my parents met through Judo in Ireland so when they moved to Australia they found a club near Traralgon which they got involved in and put my two wo older brothers into, and being a younger sister all you want to do is folllow your older siblings around,” sshe said. and “I started with the Yinnar a C District Judo Club and then moved mo ed to the Traralgon Judo Club and d they y gave me a grea at base in the ssport to build on so when w d high I finished school I moved d to Melbourne and started trainin ng at the Resilience Training Centrre with four-tim me Olympian Dan niel Kelly who then became my m coach and refined my skills to push intoo higher gradee competition.”

will be Moe-born soccer goalkeeper Teagan Micah.

The 23-year-old will take a place in the Matildas’ squad as the last line of defence between the sticks.

She made an excellent impression on international debut against Sweden just last month, an effort which saw her claim player of the match honours, and continued that good form into the team’s transition camp to earn selection as one of three goalkeepers in the 22-strong squad.

Micah’s soccer journey began at Moe United, where she played for three seasons before moving to Queensland at the age of 10.

On the eve of the Olympics, Micah spoke of her recent rise with ESPN. “I’m still trying to grasp that. In a way it surprised me,” she said.

“But in a way it doesn’t because I know how hard I’ve worked. And I’ve had lots of different coaches’ influence me over this time and spent a lot of time away from home and things like that. So all those things. I feel like I’m getting rewarded for but I’m still just trying to keep my feet on the ground, honestly. It’s kind of crazy.”

Her focus is squarely on playing her role.

“I mean, obviously, it’s always nice to get minutes and especially because it’s an Olympic tournament, that’s massive,” she said.

“I think any way I can help the team is a success for me, whether that’s on the bench, pushing Lydia Williams, whether it’s me playing, I think that’s a success as well.”

Micah will have plenty of support at Moe United, with club president Reg Poxon saying it was incredible to see a local achieve such great things.

“Everyone at the club is proud to see a local Moe junior make it to the highest professional level,” he said.

“To make her debut for her country and be Olympics squad is a credit to named in the Olympic how hard she’s workeed.”

Poxon remembers seeing a young Micah a the club, with her skills at s between the goals clearly evident from f an early age.

“From a young agee, being one of the only girls in a team fulll of boys, you could see she had a fair bitt of natural ability as is rare at such a a goalkeeper, which w young age beccause goalkeeper is a difficult posittion to play,” he said.

“Teagan’s had some fantastic opportunitiees to grow and make it to the leveel she’s got to today … but all of this stems from her own drive and motiivation to be the best she can be.”

The games of the XXXII (32nd) n from July 23 to Olympiad run August 8.

Medal chances: Coughlan recently finished in the top eight at the World Championships and has aimed to finish around that mark in her first outing at an Olympic event in Tokyo.
