CALL FOR COURT MEMBER for Morwell Russell Northe has been campaigning for the state government to establish a specialised drug court in Morwell to rehabilitate and treat offenders with a drug dependency.

Mr Northe first raised the issue in Parliament last year, but is renewing his push in light of the success of a drug court in Dandenong, with others being established in Shepparton and Ballarat.

The state government is also setting up a pilot at the County Court in Melbourne.

Mr Northe said there was a “critical need” for the Latrobe Valley to be included in any program expansion, citing the region’s high drug-related crime rates which had tripled in the past decade.

“You can’t arrest your way out of this situation, drug and alcohol addiction is a recognised health issue,” he said.

“There are a lot of addicted people who don’t want to be and if a drug court helps people find a pathway to be healthy, then this should be supported.”

The drug court supervises low-level offenders caught in the cycle of drug and alcohol dependency and substancerelated offending, addressing the underlying factors that contribute to offending.

Participants must comply with orders to undertake alcohol and drug

counselling, drug testing, and must regularly attend reviews, case management and clinical advisor appointments.

According to state government figures, Dandenong drug court results showed that re-offending in the first year after completing the program dropped by a third.

Buildings demolished AN increased risk to public health and safety has necessitated the demolition of buildings in the Hazelwood Pondage and its surrounds.

The area was returned last year to ENGIE Hazelwood after the expiration of a long term lease on the former caravan park area, and includes buildings previously occupied by the local yacht club, power board club and an associated aquatic centre building.

Since ENGIE was required to lower water levels in the pondage due to a decline in structural integrity of the pondage walls, the infrastructure on the site has been subject to on-going vandalism.

An example of the levels of vandalism was the disappearance of the stairwell from the former yacht club.

An ENGIE Hazelwood spokesman said the damage to numerous buildings and infrastructure

was significant and it was also obvious that people were conducting various other inappropriate activities on the site.

“We do have health and safety concerns. As well as broken glass and damage to walls, toilets and the like, it is likely that there is asbestos within the buildings, given their age,” he said.

“There is an increasing public health and safety risk and the appropriate action is to demolish and safely dispose of materials.”

Principal demolition contractor Delta Group will begin the works this week as part of the current demolition and rehabilitation program at the former Hazelwood Power Station and Mine.

ENGIE Hazelwood is pursuing approvals for the creation of a lake in the former mine void, which in future could see a permanent waterway four times the size of the former Hazelwood Pondage.

Playgroup support races in THREE Gippsland greyhound racing clubs and Greyhound Racing Victoria have contributed funds to a local flood-affected playgroup.

The unexpected flooding of the Traralgon Playgroup facilities, which are located in the Traralgon Showgrounds complex, saw the loss of most of the group’s outdoor toys and bikes.

The group approached Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club for assistance and club manager Steve Clarke not only quickly made a cash commitment, but also sought assistance from Sale and Warragul clubs.

This amount was matched by Greyhound Racing Victoria, which brought the total to $1500.

Playgroup president Melissa Casey said the group offered space for families to connect, play and socialise.

“We rely on grants and fundraising activities to keep our facilities and equipment in good working order,” she said.

“We appreciate the speedy response to our plea for help from the Gippsland greyhound racing industry which will enable us to quickly replace the lost items.”

THE company behind the used lead acid battery plant for Hazelwood North has donated $10,000 to the Morwell and Traralgon Lions clubs to help get flood and storm-affected families back on their feet.

The donation, made on behalf of Chunxing Group chairman Yang Chunming will go directly to those in need to assist with the replacement of whitegoods, furniture and general house restorations.

Morwell Lions Club president Janine Angus said the club was blown away by the generous donation from Chunxing.

“We are absolutely rapt,” she said.

“The Lions Club are always going out and raising money to donate to good causes so to have somebody come out of the blue and want to donate $10,000 to help those affected by the storm and the flooding just blew us away.”

Chunxing senior project director Robin Krause told The Express that Mr Yang had felt compelled to donate after seeing photos and videos of last month’s floods.

“Chunxing is very community minded and in the areas that they’ve worked and set up businesses they support the community,” he said.

“This flood affected zone, particularly the Traralgon Creek area touched the heart of our chairman in china and he said ‘let’s help them’.”

Chunxing chief executive officer Dr Lakshman Jayaweera made the decision to donate to the Lions clubs as he felt it would see the funds quickly received by those in need.

“Dr Lakshman decided that the lions club would suit his donation because he wanted the funds to go directly to affected families that were in immediate distress,” Chunxing executive assistant Tania Brown said.

“Hopefully it’ll help with the restoration of their homes and help replaced what was damaged by the floods and hopefully get them back on track for the future.”

Traralgon Lions Club president Dale Harriman said up to $1000 would soon be made available for affected residents who could approach the club and request necessities which would then be purchased on their behalf.

“It’s a huge boost and it lets us do so much more,” he said.

“We’ll actually be making donations of $1000 per household available to those affected, we are waiting to pass on our information to Latrobe City council so they can pass it on to those affected by the floods.”

establish drug court in Valley

EMERGENCY Management Victoria is under fire after failures in early flood warning systems that left Traralgon residents inundated and told to evacuate in dangerous floodwaters.

Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath has asked the state government to explain why Traralgon flood warning systems failed to be activated before it was too late on June 10.

Ms Bath is also calling for significant investments to upgrade systematic failures, including ensuring live upstream river gauge readings would be incorporated into timely flood warnings.

It comes after the first evacuation order was not issued until 10.30am - at least four hours after the water level in the Traralgon Creek had risen by four-metres and was rapidly increasing.

The VicEmergency app issued a severe warning at 4am when most people were asleep and unaware of the oncoming disaster.

Berry Street resident Stephen Ruff went to bed the previous night under a moderate flood warning, but woke up with a metre of water coming up under his floorboards.

He said by the time the evacuation order was issued later that morning, it was too late to leave.

Mr Ruff said some neighbours attempting to obey evacuation orders were told to stay put instead of driving through floodwaters, and sandbags were being offered to already inundated properties.

The former municipal surveyor was appointed as a community representative on a state government flood committee in the mid-90s. He said this time, the system had completely failed.

Flood warnings were previously activated by Latrobe City which had rigorous systems that included door-knocking and a warning siren before being transferred into EMV. “The VicEmergency app was very confusing and it’s not enough, there were that many different warnings we were unsure what they meant or how severe it would get,” Mr Ruff said.

“I want the flood warnings to return to local governments who know the local area, not some government organisation that sits in ivory towers in the city.”

Ms Bath said the break down in communications was much more than “a gap in the emergency management system, but a dangerous failure that could have cost lives”.

She pointed to “antiquated” upstream river gauges which were supposed to feed real time data and trigger a flood response to allow downstream locals time to prepare.

“What should’ve happened reflects an inadequate system that should be fixed, people could not prepare,” she said.

“I’m calling for a proper review into what went wrong and to include local experts, but my concern is that they will call a desktop review that won’t delve into it.”

The call for an in-depth review was echoed by Member for Morwell Russell Northe, who is also pushing for a flood mitigation plan for Traralgon Creek residents and nearby community groups.

Mr Northe asked the state government to work with local and federal government agencies on a flood mitigation plan to help locals flood proof their homes.

An EMV spokesperson said the emergency management sector had undertaken significant planning to respond to and work with communities to keep them safe.

“The incident management team located in Gippsland was in place, ready to respond to flooding in the Traralgon Creek area. This included utilising Victoria’s integrated warnings system,” the spokesperson said.

“The emergency management sector is dedicated to continuous improvement and an important part of any emergency is the review stage.

“We will be conducting a range of coordinated debriefing exercises and after-action reviews. This will include a review of the public information and warnings used in Traralgon.”

Part of a $4 billion Regional Rail Revival program, the upgrade will include duplicating track, extending the Morwell crossing loop, improving level crossings and signalling, adding second platforms at three stations and reactivating the second platform at Traralgon.

Critical site works and site establishment activities are progressing at key locations along the line.

Site investigations, including signalling correlation, track surveys, service proving and geotechnical drilling have been taking place both on and alongside the track, as well as at stations located along the line between Pakenham and Traralgon.

“Our works are progressing on the Gippsland Line Upgrade to deliver even more benefits for passengers in the region,” Regional Rail Revival delivery director Ben Henshall said.

“Construction will be ramping up in the coming months and that will mean more opportunities for local contractors and suppliers, and a boost for the regional economy.”

More than 75 contractors and suppliers attended April’s regional industry briefings in Warragul and Morwell.

Site compounds are in place at Longwarry and Traralgon, with site works to establish larger compounds and project offices in Bunyip and Morwell slated to begin in the coming weeks.

It comes as V/Line train services on the Gippsland Line were disrupted yesterday due to a power outage at the main operations centre.

The Gippsland Line was not alone when it came to the problem, with Bendigo, Warrnambool, Swan Hill, Echuca and Shepparton customers also affected.

Trains were replaced by coaches.

Mr Northe congratulated the state government for investing in programs such as the Hope Restart Centre in Bairnsdale and a youth rehab centre in Traralgon, with more to be spent on mental health.

However, he said a drug court would provide complementary measures to help support people in their recovery and divert them out of the justice system.

“This should not mean people should not be exonerated for their crimes, yes, they should be punished for their crimes, but they should be helped to get better,” he said.

The call has been backed by a raft of local community organisations, including the Gippsland Primary Health Network, Latrobe Health Advocate and Latrobe Community Health Service.

LCHS drug and alcohol clinical lead Jonathan Fahey described Mr Northe’s push as a “very progressive initiative” for the region.

“These programs will broadly reduce crimes and this is an option we should champion,” Mr Fahey said.

“Establishing a drug court and improving the mental health system indicates governments are looking to alternatives to the war on drugs.”

Gippsland PHN chief executive officer Amanda Proposch also supported the call with an “integrated approach where health and legal issues can be addressed holistically to meet each person’s needs”.

“Addressing underlying issues to break a cycle of offending has the potential to improve the health and wellbeing of many vulnerable people while also improving community safety,” Ms Proposch said.

Attorney-General Jaclyn Symes said in her response to Mr Northe that expanding drug courts would depend on an evaluation of existing and new sites, as well as consultation with communities and key stakeholders Ms Symes also hoped Mr Northe would “continue to support expansion of the drug court to Latrobe Valley when the next project and funding opportunities arise”.

$3 million commitment carries freight

THE Opal Australian Paper Mill at Maryvale received a significant boost recently in the form of a $3 million upgrade to its rail freight siding system.

Ports and Freights Minister Melissa Horne was in Maryvale on Tuesday to visit the mill and assess the upgrades to the rail tracks, which form part of a broader $83 million stimulus package from the state government into regional rail maintenance.

Ms Horne explained how this maintenance will assist Opal Australian Paper export product out of its Maryvale facility.

“Part of this investment (from this stimulus package) went to Australian Paper to be able ensure that they have the track maintenance required to provide that long-term pipeline to be able to export their product out through the Port of Melbourne and also interstate,” Ms Horne said.

“We have already delivered more than $75 million in vital regional rail upgrades under this package, improving freight connectivity and bolstering support for regional producers.”

Opening in 1937, the Maryvale mill has become a staple of the Latrobe Valley community and grown to employ 850 people and manufacture 600,000 tonnes of paper and cardboard annually, with over half transported by train.

Being such a large producer of industry in the region, she said it is of paramount importance to ensure its transport system is of a high quality.

“This is the highest value freight line in the state, so to make sure it is being maintained at the best possible standard for what it is transporting is of paramount importance to both the company and also the 850 local jobs that it creates,” she said.

“It was identified through the work that the company (Opal Australian Paper) had done with Freight Victoria and the Department of Transport to make sure we built on the work they had done previously with VicTrack, to say here is a high value investment that will have a big impact on the region.”

Ms Horne said an investment such as this into the Maryvale Mill will increase its reliability and allow Opal Australian Paper to continue to provide jobs to the local community.

“From what we have seen with Australian Paper looking to diversify what it is doing, to invest massively into its operations here, anything the state government can do to support is of critical importance because it is about creating the jobs locally

From Opal Australian Paper’s perspective, manager of strategic projects Ben McLean said these upgrades will be extremely beneficial to the mill’s transport operations.

“We were facing a maintenance build-up that ran into hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, and questions about the reliability of the service and the on-going nature of the rail access to the mills,” Mr McLean said.

“We wanted to make sure the rail line was in good condition, resolve the maintenance issue and provide a rail asset that we can use for years to come, it was fantastic to welcome the minister here today and see the line finished and looking so good.”

Have your say on dairy code: Chester urges local farmers LOCAL MP Darren Chester is encouraging Gippsland dairy farmers to have their say on the Dairy Code of Conduct.

The Federal Member for Gippsland said the Code of Conduct was introduced at the beginning of 2020 to address market imbalances in the industry and was about to undergo its first review.

“Feedback is an essential component of the review and will inform decisions to improve the code,” Mr Chester said.

“The code helps to give a fair go for dairy farmers and a stronger business environment.

“I encourage local farmers to provide feedback to ensure the code is operating efficiently and producing the desired outcomes.”

Mr Chester said the Dairy Code Review Reference Group will support the first review of the code.

“The reference group includes farmer and processors representatives from across the eight dairy regions,” Mr Chester said.

“To ensure a well rounded and informed code is implemented it is important to hear about all different experiences and issues faced within the industry.

“It is important the industry and government work together to support farmers and safeguard the industry.”

Closure hits home A CHURCHILL cafe operator is “heartbroken” after making the decision to close her business after seven years, citing the toll of COVID lockdowns on the hospitality industry.

Vintage C’hill cafe owner Kelli Love removed all the equipment and handed-back the keys to the premises last week after having to close her “much-loved cafe”.

“We are grieving the loss of what was once a thriving business and for our employees who have sadly lost their jobs through no fault of their own,” Ms Love said.

Ms Love said the past 18 months of lockdowns and rapidly changing COVID restrictions “destroyed the profitability” of the small business.

“We tried everything to pivot our business takeaway, outdoor dining, new products but in the end the fourth lockdown beat us,” she said.

“We understand there is global pandemic, but it’s hard to justify the harsh trading restrictions imposed upon small businesses, especially when

your country town has never once recorded one case of coronavirus.”

Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath said the fourth lockdown triggered by Melbourne’s northern suburbs outbreak was “the last straw” for many small business owners.

Ms Bath said one of the hardest hit sectors were Gippsland cafés that had become unprofitable that due to reduced patronage.

It comes as the latest ACA Research report highlighted increasing concerns from small to medium businesses about their future survival, particularly those employing less than 20 people.

“Collectively small business owners are the greatest employing body in the country,” Ms Bath said.

“They employ our children and sponsor our sporting clubs, they need a break from Victoria’s yo-yo restrictions.”

Code overhaul

THE native forest industry, the Opposition and manufacturing union have welcomed the state government’s move to overhaul the timber code of practice but say it still does not go far enough to secure wood production.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio announced a review of the Code of Practice for Timber Production to provide “much needed certainty” for conservationists, the forest industry and the Conservation Regulator.

The code plays a crucial role in regulating Victoria’s native timber industry.

The review improves and addresses the code’s deficiencies, aiming to set out a clear, internationally recognised definition of the ‘Precautionary Principle’ that “everyone can understand and apply”, Ms D’Ambrosio said.

Ambiguities in the definition have sparked actions in the Supreme Court and Federal Court by green groups that have closed dozens of coupes in Gippsland.

Ms D’Ambrosio said the proposed code change meant that the Precautionary Principle would apply “when there is any threat of serious or irreversible environmental damage”.

Initial code changes will be followed by a comprehensive code review by December 2023.

Cutbacks in the native forest industry are scheduled to begin in 2024 under the government’s forestry plan, which will close the industry by 2030.

Victorian Forest Products Association chief executive officer Deb Kerr said the review gave the government the opportunity to end the green litigation that had held up supplies of native timber, especially when supply shortages were hitting housing construction.

Complaints to the Office of the Conservation Regulator were either unfounded or based on a small number of technical findings unrelated to endangered species protection, she said.

The Shadow Minister for Forestry and Member for Narracan, Gary Blackwood, said the review was well overdue but may be even too late as sawmills were beginning to run out of supply.

Ms D’Ambrosio had stalled the review’s recommendations, completed more than 18 months ago, despite knowing that VicForests could not meet supply commitments, he said.

Mr Blackwood said there were still outstanding issues that the recommendations did not address, such as road buffers and fire management. Also, the comprehensive review flagged

by December 2023 would drag out uncertainty for an already ‘on-edge’ industry.

“It seems these issues may not be dealt with until a more comprehensive review in December 2023. Given the Andrews Labor Government’s track record on meeting dates, the new December 2023 deadline will give no certainty in the short term, as it will encourage third party litigation through the courts,” he said.

Mr Blackwood said the industry needed assurance that the Minister for the Environment would not change her mind.

“It would be a disaster for industry if the Minister reversed her support for the recommendations of her own review,” he said.

The national secretary of CFMEU Manufacturing, Michael O’Connor, said the reworked ‘precautionary principle’ framework provided “some certainty” for industry. It would be harder for judges to decide that VicForests was not complying with Victorian law, he said.

However, Mr O’Connor said further code amendments were needed to stop technical loopholes still exploited by industry opponents in the courts.

These would ensure contractors and their crews were better protected from workplace invasions and that timber harvesting was safe.

Weather: Flood waters under the Thomson Bridge last month.

Railway set to re-open NORMAL service will resume on the Walhalla Goldfields Railway.

The popular tourist attraction, a Gippsland favourite for more than 25 years, was derailed by the heavy storm which lashed the region in June.

But following extensive works to repair the storm and flood damage, the Railway announced it will be resuming passenger conveyance on its regular winter timetable.

It is a massive fillip for the non-for-profit organisation, which exists thanks to the outstanding efforts of their volunteers and the support of the general public.

“The past two months have been a huge challenge for the Railway, suffering back-toback income losses off the back of the latest covid shutdowns, followed by the devastating

By being better informed, users can have greater control over their usage and optimisation of renewable energy sources such as solar.

Over the next six months, the project will continue to engage the community through workshops and webinars outlining technical options and potential business models.

Three public display installations, showing summaries of the real-time data collected by the monitors, will be situated at key points around Heyfield.

LATROBE City Council will continue to operate the Moe and Yallourn North Outdoor Pools following a review of the 2020/21 season.

The review of the 2020/21 season found that 9120 visitors attended the outdoor pools and visitations were slightly down from the previous season due to the impacts of COVID-19 restrictions.

At the Ordinary Council Meeting on July 5, Council voted to open the Moe and Yallourn North Outdoor Pools from the last Saturday in November through to Labour Day in March.

All outdoor pools will open 2pm to 7pm on days forecast to be 25-29.9 degrees or above; open 12pm to 7pm on days forecast to be 30 degrees or above; and close on days forecast to be 24.9 degrees or below.

Entry to Yallourn North Outdoor Pool will remain free.

Chester on the front foot I RARELY respond to ‘letters to the editor’ because I believe in freedom of speech and support robust political debate.

But ‘freedom of speech’ also comes with an obligation to be factual.

Both Ravindu Gunawardena and Marcia Davidson (The Express, Letters, 8/7/21) wrongly accuse me of not supporting jobs in the Latrobe Valley energy sector.

Throughout my Parliamentary career I have been an outspoken advocate for reliable, affordable energy to underpin our nation’s economic wealth, support local jobs and reduce the cost of living pressure for all Australians.

I have steadfastly supported the interest of workers in Latrobe Valley power stations, along with those in energy intensive sectors such as paper manufacturing, hardwood timber and agriculture.

To suggest otherwise is plainly wrong and is nothing more than a blatant attempt to discredit my standing in the community, in the lead up to the Federal election.

In relation to Ms Davidson’s ill-informed and inaccurate claims about my performance of my role in Canberra, I can only reference the public support I have received from all ex-service organisations in the wake of my dismissal from the Veterans’ Affairs portfolio.

I remain absolutely committed to representing the interests of all Gippslanders in Federal Parliament and won’t be distracted by false allegations from so-called ‘anonymous sources’ in the Canberra media.

Unlike my critics, I put my name to my media comments and stand by my record of achievement as the Member for Gippsland.

I SAY a big thank you to the council volunteer service for providing me with drivers to take me to the Alfred Hospital Radiotherapy Unit on very short notice.

Hayley and Sarah organised the drivers and were very helpful in assuring me I would be picked up at home with plenty of time to get to my appointments.

George drove me two times and showed me where to go, and was waiting for me when I had finished.

Ian my second driver had to battle torrential rain and traffic due to a breakdown, and Tony, an emergency driver who fills in when asked to help out.

Knowing this service is available helped to ease my worry and was very much appreciated.

SINCE my wife and I moved to Gippsland 12 years ago, I wanted a politician that puts people and Gippsland first ahead of politics.

I found Darren Chester was the person. He has always fought for the people of Gippsland.

Yes there were times when he faulted, after all he is human.

As for Barnaby Joyce, he has goofed again by dropping Mr Chester to the back bench when he was doing his portfolio job justice.

The National Party should get behind and support Mr Chester, after all he has kept The Nationals alive in Gippsland.

Another observation

HAVING been involved in the federal public service previously, I am not surprised by Marcia Davidson’s observation that Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester is seen by many in Canberra as too focused on his media image rather than the bread and butter of his job (The Express, Letters, 8/7/21).

Whilst there is no doubt that Mr Chester presents a smooth image when talking to the media, the experience of my former public service colleagues is that as a government minister, he was not too interested in the detail and much too slow in dealing with ministerial briefs and making decisions.

That likely explains why he has never been able to become a serious leadership contender himself or win promotion to a frontline portfolio, despite being in federal parliament for over a decade.

I registered with the Emergency Management Team and have heard nothing back. My hubby needs back surgery so is unable to do a lot unfortunately so I’m really needing help with the physical removal of the trees. I’ve never ever asked for help, not even after Black Saturday but at the moment we are in a state of limbo.

Passions on show during Euro final

AGONY, ecstasy and tension were just a handful of emotions filtering through Morwell’s Italian-Australian Club on Monday morning as dedicated English and Italian soccer fans packed the local staple for what proved to be an epic Euro 2020 final.

Opening their doors from 4:30am for the big occasion, Italian flags and red, green and white streamers could be found throughout the venue as supporters settled in and took advantage of the bar for an early morning coffee, or in many cases - beer.

Sporting a relatively even split of English and Italian fans, the match started with great anticipation with chants ringing around the room and intent faces glued to the television screen.

And it would not be long until the match had its first big moment.

Just two minutes into the contest, right back Kieran Trippier found space on the wing and whipped a perfectly placed cross to his counterpart on the left side Luke Shaw, who waltzed into the box unopposed and hammered a half volley into the back of the net to give England the early advantage.

Chants of “football’s coming home again” from crazed English fans filled the viewing area as the dream of international glory suddenly became a genuine possibility for this group of dedicated supporters.

Football was 88-minutes away from coming home.

England would continue to dominate the early passages, resulting in their contingent of support getting more and more vocal, to the point where some frustrated Italians retreated to another room to watch the match in a more peaceful environment.

However, the men with three lions on their shirt could not extend their lead in the first half and went into the main break with a nervy 1-0 buffer.

While the mood was relatively flat among those in blue, the ever optimistic Nick Vitale had these words at half time.

“My hope is Italy will come back and win, it was a tight first half as England went defensive and shut us down – it was a wonderful strike

Tense moments: England fans could not bear to watch as the match entered extra time. at the start there and you can’t do much about that,” Mr Vitale said.

“There is always hope and it should be an exciting second half.”

Following what would later turn out to be prophetic words from Mr Vitale, Italy would begin the second half full of energy and dominate possession.

This would result in the generation of a number of chances, before a cross into the box in the 67th minute put pressure on the England defence, who after an excellent save from Jordan Pickford, were unable to negotiate the rebound of the post to centre back Leonardo Bonucci as he duly tapped the ball into the net.

The score was 1-1 with 23 minutes to go and the previously quiet Italian crowd perked up, while the vocal English took an unusual backseat.

By this stage everybody in the club knew – this one was going down to the wire.

A tense period would follow Italy’s equaliser,

as each side wrestled with the momentum but were unable to create any meaningful chances to see the score’s level after 90-minutes.

Murmurs of “I can’t watch this” and “I hate this game” came from both parties as extra time began, with the nerves proving too much for some as they bailed to the courtyard area with their heads between their hands.

Not much would come from the extra 30 minutes from an attacking sense as stout defensive structures saw each team unable to create any genuine chances and tension grew among the supporters as it quickly became clear the game was destined for penalties.

With the Italian and English crowd now genuinely split between the two viewing areas, you could feel the nervousness in the air throughout the venue as Domenico Berardi made his way to the spot to get proceedings underway.

Getting off to an even start, it would be England who gained the early ascendancy as

an epic Jordan Pickford save drew rapturous cheers from the English fans as the dream of an international title came within touching distance.

However, the ecstasy would be short lived, as Marcus Rashford fluffed his lines to bring things back to level pegging, before an incredible save by player of the tournament Gianluigi Donnarumma gave Italy the advantage and a chance to win the title.

With the weight of the world on his shoulders, Jorginho stepped up to the plate and in a dramatic plot twist was denied by Pickford, resulting in previously depressed English fans roaring back to life.

It was now up to 19-year old Bukayo Saka for England, who after taking the pressure of the moment was unable to live out every boy’s dream after being denied by Donnarumma, giving Italy a famous victory and drawing cheers of “Forza Italia” from the delirious crowd.

For the English, it would be yet another heartbreak with local supporter Keith Allen saying it just wasn’t their day.

“I am used to England losing so it is not the end of the world for me,” Mr Allen said.

“England had the better of the start and Italy got it back in the second half and unfortunately it went to penalties at the end which we hate and it didn’t go our way – but to be able to come here and watch was fantastic and the Italian Australian Club putting it on meant I didn’t have to go to Melbourne for the game.”

As for the Italian-Australian Club, events manager Gaynor Vitale said it was an extremely successful morning.

“It was a fantastic turnout, seeing so many Italian and English supporters, we had breakfast put on, lots of cheers, lots of positive vibes and in the end we had around 60 people come into the venue which is a really great outcome,” Mrs Vitale said.

“It was the first time we had put on an event like this post-COVID, so we didn’t really know what to expect – to see it unfold the way it did with Italy winning and the passion of the support it made us all really proud.”

So in the end football would not return to its original home, with the Euro 2020 title now on its way to Rome.

Scholarships on offer at Grammar

Gippsland Grammar student Violet Fischer moved to the region with her family from Saudi Arabia last year and recently spoke to The Middle of Everywhere about her transition to her new School.

She admitted the transition just before lockdown was hard but said the teachers and students were incredibly supportive.

“All the students here are nice, kind and caring … and yes I’ve some good friends.”

She said she was also excited to be part of Gippsland Grammar’s traditions as she progressed through the School.

Primary school-aged children are being encouraged to register for the current Junior Entry Scholarships.

Watson reflects on a sterling career

MORWELL Senior Sergeant David Watson is retiring after a long and distinguished career with Victoria Police.

Senior Sergeant Watson has spent to close to 50 years in the force, and has served in virtually all parts of Gippsland.

As he prepares to officially hang up the badge, Snr Sgt Watson said his time with Victoria Police had been a great one.

“Over the last few months I’ve had a chance to reflect on my career and there is certainly a lot of interesting times that I experienced throughout,” he said.

“I’ve enjoyed the interaction with other members and staff, you certainly meet some colourful characters within the community on all sides.”

Snr Sgt Watson started his policing career in Melbourne way back in 1975 as a 17-year-old fresh out of a high school.

The course of history may have been completely different had he joined the Australian Navy, an area he was interested in through his love of the water, but he chose the police upon the suggestion from someone already in the force.

After completing his cadetship, he joined the academy, where he graduated and had his first posting in North Melbourne.

His appointment to the Latrobe Valley came in 1986 and as they say - the rest is history.

“I expected to come down for three or four years, ended up meeting a local girl and that’s the end of the story … I’ve been here ever since,” he said.

“I’ve worked at every station in one capacity or another, worked at Warragul, Wonthaggi … I’ve been around the division.”

Coming to the area as a Senior Constable, Mr Watson climbed through the ranks to become a Senior Sergeant.

Having worked across so many eras, Snr Sgt Watson said it was amazing to think of the many ways in which policing had evolved.

“It certainly was a different world back when I started, so much has changed over the years,” he said.

“The technology that has come into the job, the added responsibilities that come with the job, I have the total utmost respect to the young members that are coming in with what they are taking on, it is certainly a lot more than what we used to take on.”

Snr Sgt Watson’s work has seen him help

countless communities, particularly following natural disasters.

“Certainly things like the Black Saturday bushfires, the flooding events that we’ve had here and in East Gippsland, as well as down Wilsons Promontory when that flooded there were 400 odd campers stuck on Tidal River we had to work a long time to get those people off out of Tidal River,” he explained.

“It affects people, affects the community, and our job is to fix what’s going on to reduce the risk to the community and then to make sure the community recovers later on.

“In the latter years I did enjoy being involved in the emergency management side, it’s very challenging, there is always something new, it is fast-paced.”

His involvement in managing traffic for MotoGP events on Phillip Island has also been especially noteworthy, as is entails the very unique challenge of trying get some 100,000 people on and off the island via only one available road.

A self-described “jack of all trades master of none”, Snr Sgt Watson said the camaraderie and mateship that came with working in such a tight knit team was something he would greatly miss.

“That is one of the things I’ll miss, it is always nice to have those people around you,” he said.

“They know what you are going through and you know what they are going through, it’s good to be able to debrief with them and have a talk.”

Snr Sgt Watson’s dedication was formally recognised recently when he was awarded the Australia Police Medal.

“It was a humbling experience, I certainly didn’t expect it,” he said.

“There were certainly a lot of thoughts and emotions when I found out. It is a great honour.”

Moving into retirement, Snr Sgt Watson hopes to have more time to pursue his passion for fishing and travelling.

“I’m looking forward to what’s ahead, it’s nice to be able to do things as you please. There won’t be any more missed birthdays or anniversaries,” he said.

The police legacy is set to continue for a few years yet, as Snr Sgt Watson’s daughter Sarah is also in the force.

Keeping the cheeky father’s sense of humour, the senior Watson said he had set the bar high.

“It is very nice that she decided to take on that career … we’ll see if she makes 47 years also,” he said.

Charity begins at home for Querencia House community

THE giving nature of the Querencia House community came to the fore recently, as residents banded together to donate more than 150 pairs of pyjamas to local fundraising campaign PJ’s for foster children.

Inspired by the constant challenges faced by children in the foster care system, this cause gives these kids a chance to own something new, which for many is something they have never experienced before.

Organised by active volunteer worker Dawn O’Connell, who through her organisation Our Kinda Country has engineered a number of local fundraising campaigns, she reached out to a host of close friends to assist with the campaign including close friend and Querencia House resident Rose Hewitt.

Ms Hewitt said she was quickly motivated by the cause and keen to get as many residents from the retirement village involved as possible.

“She (Dawn) thought there was a need there (helping these foster children) and I just jumped on board what I think is a very worthwhile cause,” she said.

“I had done (fundraising) things with Dawn in the past but I had never got the people here (at Querencia) involved so I was very keen to get the word out to the residents and the immediate response of the community here was just remarkable.”

The Querencia staff went about creating a table in the communal dining area, where residents could come down and place there pyjama donations.

Seeing the amount of stock piled up grow and grow was something Ms Hewitt took great pride in as the community rallied behind the campaign.

“I put it out there and everyone just ran with it really and it was nice to see everyone giving and engaged with something rather than just talking about COVID,” she said.

“Everyone was really excited to be involved and it was good to see the tenants happy, seeing everyone’s faces when they went out and bought a pair of pyjamas to give was just fantastic and to give them to kids in need just makes it all the more worthwhile.”

Ms O’Connell said she was overcome with emotion when she saw the amount of pyjamas the residents had donated.

“I was in tears (when I went to Querencia House to pick up the donation), these people did such a great job in getting behind the cause and I get quite emotional when we achieve something and see an effort like this in our community,” Ms O’Connell said.

Fundraising campaigns are not uncommon place at Querencia House, as manager Donna Gibson praised the giving nature of the community and their willingness to support those less fortunate.

“We do a lot of fundraising and they we try and find something to spend the money on – we don’t particularly like to just hand over a cheque, rather if we can buy something an organisation actually needs it really gives our residents a lot of pleasure,” Ms Gibson said.

“In the past we have supported the Cancer Council, the Lions Club, organised countless Biggest Morning Tea’s, shave for a cure, there are just so many causes and sometimes we struggle to find someone to give too we love donating that much.

“Life is supposed to be about caring and putting smiles on people’s faces and I would say we are certainly a giving bunch here at Querencia House.”

One-stop shop for people with a disability

PEOPLE with a disability in Gippsland will be encouraged to interact with a new dedicated one-stop shop providing advice and up-to-date information as a national campaign rolls out across our televisions.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the name of the national campaign is ‘I can’ and would consist of television, radio, print, digital and social media advertisements.

“The campaign features people with lived experience of disability describing the benefits of using the new service,” Mr Chester said.

“The government has worked extensively with the disability sector to build a fit-for-purpose source of information and it will help our community to easily access advice and referral services.”

Families and Social Services Minister Anne Ruston said the National Disability Gateway consists of an accessible website and an 1800 phone line staffed by people with lived experience in supporting Australians with disability.

“The disability community is very diverse and finding information about policies, programs and support available for individuals can be a challenge,” she said.

“The Disability Gateway is fast, easy to use and offers a range of accessible features for people with disability including an Easy Read toggle on every page.”

The Disability Gateway can assist with a range of support, from locating advocacy services, finding a sporting team that meets the needs of a person’s disability or identifying local disability-related events.

It is available at www.disabilitygateway.gov.au or by calling 1800 643 787 Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm AEST. People with a disability who need support in another language can also contact the Gateway on 1800 643 787 and ask for an interpreter.

Morwell Historical Society y

THE Morwell Historical Society wel comes members and the general public to their open days on the first and third Wednesdays and last Sunday of the month 11am-2pm (February-November) or by appointment.

Our next General Meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 21 at 2pm followed by our guest speaker at 3pm.

Our guest speaker at this meeting will be Kerryn Jones from Latrobe City, who will talk to us about Latrobe City’s Meals on Wheels program and the role it plays in our community.

Meals on Wheels began operations in Morwell on February 2, 1966.

Meals were supplied by the Traralgon Hospital and delivered by Red Cross workers.

How has the process changed in 55 years? Come along and find out.

Skate Park competition proves a big winner

LATROBE Streetgames delivered a Skate Park Competition in Morwell on Sunday, July 11 as part of Youth Week.

It was the first competition back since September 2019 so it was very well received by the community.

It was a foggy start to the morning however by late morning, the fog had cleared which turned out to be a nice sunny day.

We had lots of participation from Skaters around Gippsland.

It was great to see everyone come together, show off skills and help each other and cheer on each other.

We’re seeing a new generation of riders with parents supporting their kids to become part of the skate community.

Riders of all ages and skill levels were encouraged to enter the competition with categories in skate, scoot and BMX. We even had a roller skater join in the competition.

Skate Park competitions are a great way to bring the community together and help build and maintain our positive skate culture.

Moe-Latrobe Valley Jazz Club

PIP Avent’s Mouldy Jazz Band has been booked as the next event for the Moe-Latrobe Valley Jazz Club to be held on Sunday, July 25 at the Moe RSL. Tuba player Pip Avent is the leader of the band which concentrates on tunes from the Golden Days of New Orleans using the sounds of trumpet, trombone, tuba, clarinet, banjo and washboard.

The band plays traditional jazz including everything from Dixieland to gospel, blues and ragtime.

THE Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath is concerned eligible vulnerable residents in Latrobe Valley are missing out on a one off $250 payment from the state government.

The $250 Power Saving Bonus is a one-off rebate for Victorian electricity account holders who hold a Department of Veterans Affairs Gold Card or receive payments under one of the following concession programs: • Centrelink pensioner concession • JobSeeker • Youth Allowance, Austudy or Abstudy • Department of Veterans Affairs pensioner concession Ms Bath said she wanted to ensure those who were eligible for this rebate didn’t miss out.

“I’m concerned that the Andrews Labor Government has done a haphazard job advertising this payment, particularly to those who don’t access social media,” Ms Bath said.

“Poor program communication combined with the decision to make the applications process online-only will result in many residents missing out on the rebate.”

Ms Bath said she has sent letters to eligible constituents aged 65 years and over living in the Morwell electorate to explain the application process for the Power Saving Bonus.

“The letter advises that those without access to the internet, or who simply require guidance to complete their application, can seek over-thephone assistance through the Brotherhood of St Laurence by calling 1800 830 029,” Ms Bath said.

“Alternatively, the wonderful volunteers at Morwell’s Neighbourhood House are offering to assist locals with their application by appointment by calling 5134 5488.”

Ms Bath said that she is also aware that there may be those aged under 65 or simply not on the electoral roll who are not aware of this program and as such she is asking people to help spread the word to their friends and neighbours.

“If you have a loved one or neighbour who may be eligible for the Power Saving Bonus payment, please ensure they are aware of it.

“If you are unsure about your eligibility you can find more information about the Power Saving Bonus, including how to apply, by visiting the Victorian Energy Compare website at https:// compare.energy.vic.gov.au.

“Alternatively, constituents can contact my office on 5174 7066 and a member of my team will help assess your eligibility.”

New defibrillators thanks to community’s generosity y

GENEROUS community donations from the 2019/20 Black Summer bushfires have funded 21 new defibrillators in District 9.

The local brigades to benefit from the donations include: Allambee, Berrys Creek, Darnum Ellinbank, Drouin West, Fish Creek, Foster, Hallston, Hedley, Loch (Nyora), Milford, Mirboo North, Neerim South, Nerrena, Nilma North, Noojee, Poowong, Ruby, Tarwin Lower (Walkerville), Willow Grove, Yanakie and Yarragon.

A total of $1.04m of community donations were spent to ensure every brigade in the state will have at least one vehicle fitted with a defibrillator.

Acting Assistant Chief Fire Officer David Chugg said the donations will save lives.

“It’s important that members are prepared if a cardiac emergency occurs,” he said.

“We have seen our members use them in some emergency situations recently and that early intervention with these automatic defibrillators saved lives.

“Donations by the community to the CFA and Brigades Donations Trust during and after the 2019/2020 Black Summer bushfires have made these additional defibrillators possible – we are very grateful for this lifesaving support.”

MOE Art Society are hard at work completing new works for their up-and-coming Exhibition in September of this year.

Grants from Latrobe City Council and EnergyAustralia and sponsorship from local businesses are allowing the group to make this exhibition a success not only for the society but for the community of Moe. Service clubs will be holding Sausage Sizzles on each of the Saturdays in the forecourt of the library and schools have been invited to bring students along to the main Exhibition or the new concept of “Artists at Work” to be held during the month of October.

It is hoped that this event will bring the community together and give local artists the opportunity to experience each other’s work.

The society meets each Thursday from 9am until 1pm at Heritage Park.

THE children of Latrobe City will be celebrated in October and the community is invited to join the party.

The Latrobe City Children’s Expo 2021 is a not-forprofit event that is free and fun for families of Latrobe City.

Thousands of people are expected to attend the expo on Thursday, October 28 in Traralgon and find out about local services for children and families.

The expo is being hosted by Latrobe City Council at the Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Stadium (GRISS) from 12pm to 6pm as part of National Children’s Week.

“There are so many services and activities for children in Latrobe City to enjoy, and they will be showcased in one location at the Latrobe City Children’s Expo 2021,” Latrobe City Mayor Sharon Gibson said.

Stallholders from across the region are now being sought.

Youth theatre is uplifting

AFTER the hugely successful sold-out performance of Back to the Past, the Gippsland Youth Drama Workshop (GYDW) will launch its second group for 2021, and will soon begin writing and rehearsing for a November show.

“The show went off, the kids were stars and it was a sell-out, what more could you ask for,” stage manager Linden Hanley said.

“The Drama Workshop is all about the kids participating, growing through guided learning, and getting experience on stage in front of an appreciative audience, and after 25 years and thousands of young performers coming through, we know what we do ticks the boxes.”

Young performers travel from across the region to be involved in the original production, where they gain valuable experience in the performing arts.

“It’s been a difficult twelve months for theatre, and for young people who love the thrill of live performance,” Hanley said.

“Missing the social interaction of weekly sessions was difficult for them. But the feedback from our young stars and their parents is that they love rehearsals, they love the building of skills and new friends, and if the swell in interest and numbers trying to get into the sessions is any indication, youth theatre in our region is healthy”.

Established in 1993, the theatre program is unique in that every production is conceived by the participants.

GYDW has produced more than 80 shows, involving over 2200 regional performers, and the sessions focus on building performance skills, as well as confidence, team work, vocabulary, communication, responsibility and various other life assets.

“The main aim is to enhance the young performer’s skills, and provide a positive educational experience in a supportive environment,” Hanley said.

The group is now setting themselves for a new production, and invites new members to get involved.

“Drama helps build resilience, wellbeing, self-esteem, identity and engagement, and participation exposes young people to essential attributes which help them cope with challenges in life,” Hanley said.

“There are nothing but positives and it’s a privilege being a part of instilling an appreciation for the performing arts in regional youth.”

The young performers build plot, characters, themes and humorous situations which are interesting to them, and the sessions incorporate improvisations, theatre sports games, writers workshop sessions, the rehearsal process, stage craft, voice projection and a final production.

“All the participants are given roles commensurate with their experience and ability, and they buzz with excitement at performing in front of a large audience,” Hanley said.

The Workshop is enhanced by actors from the award-winning Here There and Everywhere Theatre Co. “We have an amazing team helping to build the kids skills, and they are dedicated to theatre, giving opportunities to express and view the world in unique ways. It’s also a lot of fun,” Hanley said.

The Workshop’s new production commences for rehearsals on Wednesday, July 21, with the show booked for November.

Rehearsals run Wednesdays, from 5.15pm until 6.45pm, in Morwell, and are open to young participants from solid reading age through to 17 years.

Bookings are essential as places are extremely limited.

ATO is urging that you keep records of your donations

THE Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is urging taxpayers to make sure they have a record of any donation they are claiming this tax time.

Last year nearly two thirds of the charitable claims adjusted, were because the taxpayer could not prove they had made the donation.

Assistant Commissioner Tim Loh said that around 4.2 million Australians claimed deductions for more than $3.9 billion in gifts and donations to charities and not-for-profits in 2018–19.

“Australians are a generous bunch, but not all gifts and donations are tax deductible,” he said.

“There are four main reasons your donation or gift may not be tax deductible. The first is giving to an organisation that is not endorsed by the ATO as a deductible gift recipient (DGR).”

Moe to host WBBL cricket CRICKET

THE Melbourne Stars affinity with the Latrobe Valley is set to continue, as the club announced yesterday it would play back-to-back Women’s Big Bash games at Ted Summerton Reserve this season.

The Stars will descend on Moe to play the Brisbane Heat on Saturday, October 23 and the Hobart Hurricanes the following day.

In what is sure to be a huge coup for cricket in the region and countless businesses in the area, four of the WBBL’s eight teams will be in Moe around the same time, as the Adelaide Strikers will also be playing games across the two-day event which is being branded a ‘Festival of Cricket’.

This is the first WBBL game to be played at Moe and comes after Ted Summerton Reserve successfully hosted men’s BBL matches in January and December 2019.

Melbourne Stars interim general manager Blair Crouch and wicketkeeper Nicole Faltum were on hand yesterday to formally announce the fixture at the Gippsland Regional Cricket Centre, Moe, which also saw the Stars run a clinic for South Street Primary School.

As a former local player, the event will carry even more significance for Faltum.

“I grew up playing for the Trafalgar Cricket Club so to play in front of home family and friends is something I’m really excited about,” she said.

“We’re so excited to announce that we’re coming to Moe for the WBBL, I know the whole group is really keen to get down here.”

Having finished runner-up the previous season, Faltum said the team was determined to go again.

“We had a really successful campaign last season so we’re 100 per cent hoping for another really successful season,” she said.

“We’ve started training for our Victorian squads, a fair few of the girls are state contracted meaning we’ll train with them and other states and then we’ll all come together in a few weeks time to start our prep for WBBL.” Some of the best women cricketers in the world are set to come to Moe, including Australian captain Meg Lanning who also leads the Stars.

MOE Racing Club will hold a Christmas in July themed race day Saturday.

The Hillside room, Committee Room and Members Lounge will be decked out with Christmas-themed décor while on the course a seven-race card features.

This is the first official race day with hospitality packages back, which have sold out.

General admission is free, and the club will have comfortable seating and heating in the betting ring for the general public to enjoy, as well as the grand stand.

Moe Racing Club chief executive officer Shane Berry said all way in place for the meeting.

“Looking forward to our first weekend race meeting since Anzac Day. The weather forecast is not great however the new enclosed betting ring will have the heaters on and the bookies, TAB and bar will be open for business,” he said.

“It’s our Christmas in July race day, and our new weekend race day packages have sold out to capacity under COVID restrictions.

“This is a clear indication that people are looking forward to getting back to the social atmosphere of country racing at Moe and we are more than grateful to have them all return.

“We are also very excited about the fact we have just released race day packages for Ladbrokes Moe Cup 2021, featuring a Shannon Noll Concert after the last race.

“A number of other great attractions will be offered on the day including Paper Rokk Hair Fashions on the Field, Ladbrokes Community Sports Clubs Horsehead race, The COX Plate 2021 for a photo opportunity and a few SEN Track celebrities will be in attendance.

Crouch said previous BBL games at Moe had been well supported and the club was excited to meet more fans and members from across Gippsland.

“As a club we’ve had terrific support from across the Gippsland region. Having successfully hosted BBL matches in Moe before, we’re really looking forward to bringing WBBL to the community for the first time,” he said.

“Led by our captain Meg Lanning, I know the players are excited about the opportunity to play in regional Victoria and inspire the next generation of cricket fans.

“The reserve is a top class facility that has provided a great platform for the competition in regional Victoria.”

Latrobe City Mayor Sharon Gibson welcomed the news with great enthusiasm.

“Council is delighted to once again be hosting a national cricketing event,” she said.

“The community loved coming out to watch and support the Big Bash league on previous occasions, and I have no doubt that they will be welcoming again as they watch some of the best cricketers in Australia take to the field in Latrobe City.

“This is an opportunity to showcase the marvellous sporting facility that we have in Ted Summerton Reserve and for the people of Latrobe City and broader Gippsland to enjoy elite sport close to home.”

As well as the cricket games, the Stars will be have a very big presence in the community in the weeks leading in, with the club to go on a state blitz in early August, visiting schools and promoting the game of cricket.

Archers target Morwell

MORWELL’S own Twin City Archers Gippsland (TCAG) was a hive of activity when they held this year’s State and National Indoor Archery Championships over the weekend.

The two day competition saw competitors from around the state make their way to the Valley and shoot for their chance to take out a state or national title.

In its ninth year as hosts, TCAG was one of two clubs in the state to put on the event.

Each day consisted of three, three hour rounds/ flights in which competitors had the choice of shooting at one target or three smaller targets, although the point scoring part of the target remained the same size, the three smaller ones helped to reduce the chances of performing a Robin Hood and hitting your previous arrow.

Standout performances included Lucinda Parr placing first in the state and second in the country for Cub Female Compound, Kylie Rhimes placing first in the state and country for Female Crossbow, Adam Rhimes placing first in the state and second in the country for Open Male Crossbow and Aaron Inglis placing second in the state and third in the country for Open Male Crossbow.

Former TCAG president and club member Peter Bennett, who was also a competitor this year said it was great to have people coming from around the state to compete.

“It’s been great, this is one of the biggest purpose built facilities in Australia so it’s good to have that here and to have people coming from all over Victoria to shoot, it’s good for the area and good for the club,” he said.

Despite the fierce competition, the roughly 30 competitors were in high spirits, something which Bennett attributes to COVID-19 shutting down most facilities and competitions last year.

“The archers like to come here because the atmosphere is a bit more relaxed, there’s music playing and they can shoot with their friends,” he said.

“It’s an especially important thing after what we’ve been through over the last couple of years, just getting a chance to come somewhere and shoot with people you haven’t seen for two or three years is a really good thing.”

Traralgon netball returns

NETBALL

AFTER many setbacks, the Traralgon Netball Association (TNA) was excited to commence its 2021 Winter Competition in mid-June.

The TNA Committee has faced many hurdles in starting the season with challenges in finding a whole new executive committee, umpire shortages, COVID lockdowns and flood damage at the Agnes Brereton Netball Courts. However, the resilience and desire of Traralgon’s netball community won through to get the season up and running for the 49 teams who entered this year’s season.

This season, with financial support from Netball Victoria, TNA’s dedicated umpire co-ordinator, Sharan Nachorny, has created a developmental program to encourage and train beginner umpires with 30 new aspiring umpires taking the court.

Off the court the committee is also working hard to develop many crucial infrastructure improvements such as court re-surfacing due to cracking, new courtside shelters and an improved public address system.

The 2021 season will continue throughout the next few months with its conclusion of finals in October.

A SELECTION of Victoria’s most talented underage baseballers will descend on the Latrobe Valley this weekend, as the Under-12 State Winter Championships hits Toners Lane Reserve in Morwell.

The two-day carnival will feature six teams from across the state, and will mark the return to winter championship competition after players were forced to miss in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Baseball Victoria chief executive officer Kristie Middleton said it is a thrill to bring this event back to Morwell.

“We have been looking forward to this for a long time and with the cancellation last year because of COVID and the movements in the dates this year to accommodate the ever-changing landscape we are so pleased that we are able to get this event back up and running and provide such an exciting championship for our littlest baseballers,” Middleton said.

“It has been pleasing to work with the Latrobe City council as well as all the vendors and clubs in the region to get this sorted, safety is the number one priority for Baseball Victoria and we have been able to ensure that this is a safe and fun event for everyone that is attending.”

Forming part of a winter championships program that will also feature Sale, Bendigo and Werribee, Middleton explained why Morwell served as an ideal host for this year’s Under-12’s event.

Latrobe Valley are really great and open to hosting these types of events, along with this there is a raft of accommodation options in the Morwell area for teams to stay as well as places for people to go out to dinner and do what they need to do,” she said.

“While we are travelling to regional Victoria it is centralised in terms of being only two hours out of the city, my understanding is there will be around 250 people heading to the region for these championships – so we are hoping while there are limited opportunities to travel at the moment this provides a great day out for players and spectators.”

When it comes to the development of the next

generation of baseballers, she said tournaments like this serve as vital experience.

“These carnivals are really important as they provide the kids with an opportunity to go away and play their sport, but also to make new friends across the baseball landscape that they may not have contact with week in and week out,” she said.

“It also provides these kids with an opportunity to play tournament baseball which is a bit different to what they usually play on any given week, while also allowing us to get a bit of an idea of the young talent that is out there.”

As eager ball players from across the state gear up for an exciting weekend of competition, Middleton has these hopes for the carnival.

“I really hope that the kids make friends, have a great time in this different format of baseball and they are really able to enjoy being back on a safe diamond that they have missed out on over the past 18-months,” she said.

“If we can see children gain a renewed passion for the game after seeing all the different it can be played in and they just have a fun time with their family and friends it will make us at Baseball Victoria very happy.”

This event comes at a busy time for baseball in the region as the Latrobe Valley Baseball Association resumed last weekend after a midseason bye.

Traralgon continued their fine form by putting Churchill to the sword with a 19-3 victory that solidified their place on top of the LVBA ladder.

While reigning premiers Moe/Newborough showed they will be a forced to be reckoned with come the pointy end of the season, defeating Sale in a tight 7-5 encounter.

THE Traralgon Harriers weekly run took off near St Gabriel’s Primary School in Traralgon last Thursday night.

Staged in the leadup to the Traralgon Marathon, the brisk night saw 48 keen runners turn out for a run around the three-lap course amongst the Traralgon surrounds.

Touted as the meanest defence in the league, Moe lived up to their name and kept Sale scoreless while amassing five goals although their first came from Sale courtesy of an own goal from David Finnegan at 12 minutes.

Eleven minutes later a deft Riley Winkelman pass found Matt Shearing who made it 2-0.

Shearing was up to the task and belted in his second just on half time to give Moe a 3-0 lead.

The second-half continued in much the same manner as the first as Connor O’Hanlon provided an expert pass which allowed Shearing to score his hat-trick as Moe continued on their merry way. At the 77-minute mark veteran defender Nick Dastey provided fans with the goal of the match, heading it in from a Sam Lietzau cross to give Moe a five goal victory.

Sale couldn’t take a trick as even a late penalty was thwarted by long-time Moe keeper Peter Albanese to send the away side home licking their wounds.

Moe’s victory sees them open up a four point gap at the top but they are soon to be tested in the coming three weeks as they face fourth placed Newborough/Yallourn, third placed Pegasus and a tantalising contest against second placed Falcons.

THE only night match this weekend will be at Monash where the Wolves take on Traralgon City, a team renowned to play well at night.

FORTUNA were at their devastating best on Sunday as they travelled to Monash to inflict further pain on the Wolves.

In winning 6-0 it was Fortuna’s biggest win over Monash since 2003 when they won 8-0.

Three goals by Fortuna in the first half from Damon Scott at 15 and 18 minutes and Jordan Campbell at 24 completely demoralised Monash by half-time, who had no answer to Fortuna’s firepower.

Further doom and gloom ensued in the second stanza as the Orangemen helped themselves to another three goals through a brace from young midfielder Ollie Spiteri and Scott completing his hat-trick.

NEWBOROUGH/YALLOURN hold on to fourth place on the table after their not so easy win against Churchill, with the Rams making them work hard for every goal.

It took 20 minutes before Newborough/ Yallourn finally got their first through striker Mark Fairbrother.

Ash Birrell would soon score the Combine’s second as they went into the break 2-0 up.

The second half saw a resolute Churchill outfit continue to hold their own against the 2019 league champions but they could not convert this into scoreboard pressure.

The visitors would soon put the game beyond doubt with an Alex Van Vliet strike ensuring United headed home with all three points and in doing so keeping themselves in touching distance of the top of the ladder.

TOP two teams Fortuna and Falcons fought out a 2-1 thriller.

FOGGY conditions prevailed at Moe for their must-win night clash with Sale, with the Red Devils realising that to obtain top position they needed to beat Sale and build up a healthy goal difference given how tight it is at the top.

WITH Falcons looking to create breathing space between itself and their opponent on a fine Saturday evening, a pulsating and entertaining contest would ensue.

Throughout the match there were moments of brilliance from both teams as they tried to fashion opportunities in front of goal.

The respective goalkeepers were at their best with Pegasus’ Santo Simon and his opposing number, and brother, Charles Simon both in fine fettle.

The home side expertly thwarted the speed of Pegasus and the first half came to a close with neither side able to break the deadlock.

The league leaders started to dominate in the second half as the Flying Horsemen ran out of ideas and with twenty minutes to go The Birds were given the ideal opportunity to take the lead via a penalty.

League leading goalscorer Jamie Pistrin however was unable to convert as he directed the penalty directly at keeper Simon.

Further chances presented themselves to the in-form front three of Falcons, yet Simon continued to save their efforts where required.

In front of a boisterous home crowd, the Falcons couldn’t muster the deserved winner and they were almost made to pay as a counter attack with only minutes to go saw Pegasus score, however it was correctly adjudicated to being offside.

The second draw in a week sees Falcons surrender top spot to Moe while Pegasus still find themselves third, albeit four points adrift of top position.  MOE V SALE

Audrey is a true leader

An outstanding achievement: Traralgon Swimming Club’s Audrey Lee recently won Swimming Victoria’s Young Leader of the Year award for 2021.

LATROBE Valley local Audrey Lee received statewide recognition recently, after taking out the title of Swimming Victoria’s Young Leader of the Year at the 2020-21 awards night in Melbourne.

The 19-year-old exercise and sports science student has been a long time contributor to the Traralgon Swimming Club both in the pool as a swimmer for more than 14 years and more recently as an assistant strength and conditioning coach.

The current captain of the club, she can often be found assisting younger swimmers as an instructor, creating exercise plans for elite competitors and doing whatever she can to help the club run smoothly.

Lee said it was a thrill to be honoured for doing something that she loves.

“For me it is a win-win really, I love being with the kids, I love being at the swimming club so being recognised for loving my job it is just an incredible feeling,” Lee told The Express.

“I had no idea (I was up for the award), Brian

(Ford) and Cam (Juha) nominated me for this just off their own backs and I got an email one day saying congratulations you have just won the Young Leader of the Year award and it was just a great shock and surreal feeling.”

A self-proclaimed ‘fish’, she said the Traralgon Swimming Club has had a significant influence on her life and allowed her to pursue a dream career in the health and fitness industry.

“I have always been a swimmer and grew up around this club so when I was finishing year 12 I decided to cutback on my swimming and step into more of a coaching/admin and mentor role,” she said.

“Being with the kids helped me develop my leadership skills and I got more and more involved and started to go up the strength and conditioning side of the club where I am now leading a group and getting their bodies ready for the pool which I absolutely love.”

The nomination form sent in by Traralgon Swimming Club head coach Brian Ford highlighted Lee’s work during last year’s COVID lockdown as a particular example of her leadership

qualities, as she went about creating an online ‘exercise club’ to keep swimmers engaged during the uncertain times.

She explained how she went about executing the idea.

“That (the exercise club) was a huge part of my year in 2020 and kept me on my toes, I had two groups of kids at the start in the junior development and Gippy squads and I had them three times a week each doing a combination of exercises and then I would also help motivate them to keep active outside of swimming as well,” she said.

“I was that person to sort of push them along to keep living their lives and give them a positive attitude with all of the COVID stuff that was going on around them - everyday being on the computer it was busy, but it was also great to interact with all of these swimmers and help them be healthy.”

This tireless work saw Lee build a close connection with the entirety of the club and develop in a manner that saw her recognised by 45 of its 70 members as their biggest role model.

She said seeing that feedback made her realise the impact her work is having on the club.

“It makes me so happy (to see those results), I see the whole swimming club as I coach the younger ones and train with the older ones but I don’t really see myself as that role model, but once those goal sheets came through I started to realise that those kids do see me as an older person they can rely on,” she said.

“It puts into my mind that I am doing a good job and I like having that responsibility and it motivates me to keep finding new things to do and ways to help people moving forward.”

When asked what it was that makes her such a good leader, Lee had this modest response.

“I have to put it down to the training I have had, having the mentors of all the coaches they have taken me on board, they have worked with me, showed me their different styles and as a result of that I have been able to create my own unique style,” he said.

“I am always a happy person, and coming to work, I just absolutely love doing what I do here, and me being happy it makes the sessions better for the kids and helps me relate to them.”

Gippsland FC in seventh heaven after huge win SOCCER GIPPSLAND FC

UNDER-14 A SATURDAY match at Trafalgar this week made a bit of a change and this seemed to have helped the Gippsland boys kick off with some enthusiasm.

Their opponents Malvern City had been riding high recently, while the Gippsland boys had struggled for a result in past weeks.

Gippsland though were very quickly on the board within minutes, Jesse Dugard was played through

by Hamish Gleeson to score a well taken goal.

The game then changed complexion with Gippsland suffering two key injuries within a matter of minutes and were forced to reshuffle their midfield and defence.

This unsettled the side and Malvern were able to reply later in the half via a free kick.

In the second half the makeshift Gippsland defence was able to keep Malvern out while continuing a number of attacking forays.

Finally, the Gippsland defence was breached with Malvern’s giant key striker making the breakthrough.

In past weeks going behind may have heralded a collapse in confidence, but the Gippy boys had been playing with conviction, eventually Dylan Rosato who had been dangerous all game made a great break down the right crossing the ball into a very dangerous position in the box, after a skirmish in the goal square Trent Frost was able to pounce and even the score.

While not a win, a strong draw against one of the division’s top sides gave Gippsland a real confidence boost.

The player of the match award went to Luca DiCorletto for his tireless efforts to marshal the makeshift defence.

Rosato played a very strong match creating a number of chances, Corbin Blake and Noah Jackson battled on well in the midfield and defence respectively.

UNDER-15

UNDER-17

GIPPSLAND FC hosted Dandenong Thunder and wasted no time taking charge.

At the 10-minute mark Ronald Kong beat an opponent and from 30 metres drove the ball into the top of the net to give Gippsland FC a welldeserved 1-0 lead.

Three minutes later, Gippsland won a corner.

Brody Demagistris curved the ball into the goals and the Thunder keeper couldn’t stop the ball crossing the line for a second goal.

Gippsland continued to attack and at the 16th minute mark Harry Lancaster made a telling run down the right wing and crossed the ball to the back post, where Demagistris was unmarked and clinically headed the ball home for his second and Gippsland’s third.

Three minutes later Harry Lancaster was again prominent and after beating his opponent struck the ball hard and low from the edge of the box, finding the back of the net for Gippsland’s fourth and final goal of the first half.

The second half began and Gippsland showed they were still hungry for more goals.

A long ball from Gippsland keeper Chris Kelsey saw a Thunder defender foul Hayden Stockdale and a free kick awarded.

Ben McCarthy struck the ball sweetly from 25 metres and beat the Thunder keeper in the top right corner to make it 5-0 and Gippsland had reached a milestone with its best score to date in its short NPL history.

At the 50th minute mark Hayden Stockdale beat his opponent and raced into the penalty area.

As he was about to cross the ball he was pushed to the ground and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty. Rex Parini stepped up and made no mistake, scoring his fourth for the season from the penalty spot.

With three minutes left on the clock, Lancaster fired in a well hit shot which the Thunder keeper parried away, only to see Parini following in to

WITH the fog finally starting to lift at Trafalgar, Gippsland FC took on a strong Heidelberg team.

Heidelberg took a 2-0 lead into the half-time break despite the hard work of Gippsland midfielders Julian Colantuono and Harry Bettridge.

The visitors continued their dominance in the second-half, adding four more goals to seal a 6-0 win.

That match was the first of a double-header for the Under-17 side who backed up the following day to take on nemesis Dandenong City at Dandenong.

With the aid of a strong breeze Gippsland FC started fantastically, with Charlie Cockell and Campbell Young creating several chances.

A corner won by Gippsland would see Campbell Dastey find Tana Betera for the opener.

Gippsland were on top and Betera wouldn’t be denied, scoring again, giving the visitors a 2-0 half-time lead.

With the wind strengthening Gippsland knew they had a fight on their hands in the second stanza.

The referee was kept busy dealing out more cards than a blackjack dealer at the casino and it became apparent the game would go down to the wire when he awarded a penalty to the home team.

Dandenong converted the chance to halve the deficit.

There was still ten nerve racking minutes left for Gippsland to survive with Brodyn Taylor and Dylan Dunstall showing desperation in defence and goalkeeper Jared Goodwin making several great saves.

When the final whistle sounded, Gippsland FC had held on for a gallant 2-1 win.

A very positive effort that should go a long way to providing confidence for the rest of the season.

The only problem with juniors is that they can sometimes be a week-to-week proposition as far as consistency goes, and given they are lining up for an ‘expected’ win, it remains important that their preparation remains as focused as it might be in readiness for a contest like what they may be facing at finals time in a few weeks.

Boolarra will respond with a more physical and disciplined performance this week, but the fact is they just lack the number of quality personnel required to get the result.

 MORWELL EAST V MDU

FINALS officially start in a few weeks’ time, but truth be known, this clash is every bit a final.

As it stands right now, Morwell East sits precariously in sixth position with 20 points and a percentage of 123.69, and just one game behind them with a percentage of 107.53 is MDU. Both sides have had their share of highs and lows throughout the season, but another off day this weekend will surely spell the end.

Following this clash, the Hawks will face the might of Mirboo North, while for the Demons it’s an opponent from the bottom of the table in Stony Creek.

Morwell East coach Devon Soutar believes it’s been exactly this type of scenario that might bring out the best in his team - backs to the wall, nowhere to go but forward and with no second chances. The astute coach is confident his side is ready to show their best form of the season.

MDU coach Peter Harris on the other hand will be making sure the Demons are ready to go from the first bounce. A slow start last week against Yinnar effectively cost them any chance given they were playing catch up from there on in.

It promises to be an epic encounter and with sides eager to be a part of the first Mid Gippsland Football-Netball League finals in its 13 team format, the fact is there is only enough room for one of these two teams.  YINNAR V FISH CREEK

YINNAR are possibly more deserving than their current fifth position on the ladder, three losses by less than a goal throughout the year certainly coming back to haunt them now with just two rounds to go.

The Magpies are just one game and percentage behind Foster and Fish Creek who sit in third and fourth respectively, so to say a win is crucial for both sides would still be understatement, as a loss by either would be putting them in the elimination final territory come the first week of the real stuff.

Fish Creek coach John Danckert was more than pleased with his side’s efforts coming off the bye last week, especially the second half when they ran right over the top of Newborough. It was the sort of form that reads well for a step up in challenge against Yinnar.

The whispers coming out of the Magpies camp is that they are currently playing some of their best football of the season, and they will need to be to get over the top of the Kangaroos.

 HILL END V TARWIN

One eye turned to next year: Newborough senior captain Alex Skinner and coach Peter Ainsworth will want to end the season on a high against Stony Creek this weekend.

Yinnar had a fast start last week in their win over MDU, before the Demons actually controlled a half of football themselves. That sort of lapse against the Kangaroos would surely prove more costly, so the home side will have to be ready to go from first bounce to final siren.

With all that said, and with all that rides on this game, there also remains the possibility that these two teams may meet again come finals time, so as much as winning is important, so too is learning a little about each other in the hope it can be used when the stakes are even higher.  BOOLARRA V FOSTER

THE disappointment in his side was obvious last week when Boolarra coach Tony Giardina’s response to their loss to Stony Creek was simply “nothing to say other than embarrassing”.

Given that, and even though the Demons this week front up at home to the well credentialled and third placed Foster, coach and community will learn a lot about their team and individual players this week.

There is not a coach or a supporter in the world that isn’t forgiving of their side’s losses, but only if they are satisfied that each and every player has given their absolute all, and you get the feeling that might not have been the case last week as far as Boolarra was concerned.

Foster, the professional unit they are, will come to play knowing that this match is another step in the journey to much bigger things that still await,

THERE was a time just a few weeks back when Hill End appeared to have top spot and a short cut to the grand final all sewn up, but things have changed since then, with the Rovers losing one to Fish Creek and also losing a number of first choice players along the way.

If ever the Hillmen look fragile, it is right now, and even with the team’s ‘next man up’ mentality there is only so much talent that a depth of a side can cover.

Normally we would be previewing this match like it was a foregone conclusion, however the Sharks proved something last week when they pushed Mirboo North to within a solitary point - take Tarwin lightly at your own peril.

Tarwin coach Mark Garnham has been bullish about his side’s capabilities and they have proven they can worry a side above it on the ladder, and he would be hoping this week will be no different.

Certainly the Rovers have some of the best midfielders in the competition and closing them down is, for many, a bridge too far, but stopping some of them is likely to have the Sharks at least within striking distance.

Hill End remain premiership favourites with many judges, but coach Mike Santo is well aware that opinions don’t win matches and performances when it really counts is what it’s all about.  MIRBOO NORTH V TOORA

JUST when you think you have a handle on what Mirboo North are capable of, they throw a spanner in your thought works by falling over the line in a match you had them down for a comfortable win.

Last week’s win by a solitary point over Tarwin was their third such win for the season.

Similar victories over Yinnar earlier in the season and Foster just a few weeks ago has the Tigers in second position and just percentage behind league leaders Hill End.

It is quite amazing to think that just three kicks in total over three matches could have the Tigers in sixth position and still fighting for a spot in the finals.

If ever there was examples of the small things, the one percenters meaning so much, you only need to refer to these three matches to understand how the little things can change a season.

Toora too, it must be said, shouldn’t be forgotten in this preview given they have also proven they can be capable of causing an upset, the evidence of that was just a few weeks ago against Tarwin, but they are going to have to find their very best football to grab the points against Mirboo North given they will also be playing on the Tigers famous or infamous home deck depending on who you support.

Toora are in the position where they want to win at senior level but they also have a seconds side capable of staking a claim for a premiership, so balancing those two priorities is a difficult one.

The Tigers might not take top spot this week, but they should take Toora, even if it is by just a solitary point.  NEWBOROUGH V STONY CREEK

A SUCCESSFUL season doesn’t have to mean winning a premiership, it doesn’t have to mean winning a final, or even for that matter making finals.

Success varies in line with what expectation is, and for these two sides, finals may not have even been on the radar during preseason.

Newborough has won just two games in 2021 but have been competitive in more than a handful of others. Their opposition this week secured their only victory of the year just last weekend and have only shown patches of competitiveness in a few clashes.

Percentage means that Stony Creek are unlikely to get off the bottom of the ladder, but a win gives them two in succession and a reward for a year that has tested the Lions on and off the field.

Newborough, like Stony Creek, has been matterof-fact about where they currently sit and is positive about the possibilities that wait in season 2022 and beyond.

Winning isn’t absolutely the priority right now, but it will help when pitching the club to prospective recruits that their club is a place heading in the right direction.

For the combatants, the chance to see the season out on a high note will be the main motivating factor in the lead-up.

Newborough are rightly favourites to win this one, but given that the taste of success is fresh in the mouth of Stony Creek, don’t be surprised to see this one go right down to the wire.

Pure ladder illustrates race for flag is down to six FOOTBALL NORTH GIPPSLAND

AND then there were six.

After Round 11 of the North Gippsland FootballNetball League - a round which signified the point in the season were all clubs had played each other and all sides have had the bye - we have, for the first time, a pure ladder.

The way results fell meant not only a pure ladder but it also separated the buyers from the spyers, the needy from the greedy, and those who trust me from those who don’t and settled on half a dozen finals contenders.

The wash up looks something like this: Woodside will finish top of the ladder after an enthralling win over Yallourn Yallourn North. Positions second to sixth though are all up for grabs.

This means, in current ladder order, YYN, Churchill, Yarram, Traralgon Tyers United and Rosedale could all fill any of those spots when the season comes to a close.

So to Round 12 we go, where for all intents and purposes the league effectively commences a five week mini finals series where the current crop of six finals aspirants will be culled back to a final five. While all sides will have another bye, the draw certainly favours a few sides over others in what promises to be an epic finish to the homeand-away season.

The two games this week which will have the biggest say in how the finals shape up pits YYN against Yarram and TTU against Rosedale.

AFTER starting the season all the way back on Good Friday, the Jets and Yarram battle it out again this week with the winner putting one hand on a top three spot at seasons end.

YYN looked to have top spot in their grasp when they kicked nine points clear of Woodside last week with only six minutes left to play, but will now have to lower their sights and settle for battling it with the rest of the finals hopefuls and target the double chance that comes with finishing second or third.

Their opponents Yarram ran over the top of a less than full strength Churchill last week, but

Last week YYN, the team with the competitions best forward line, had to deal with the league’s best back line. This week they are up against the league’s best midfield.

While the magnets on Yarram coach Justin Staley’s white board might indicate Griffin Underwood and Jack Weston play across half back, their work rate and run and carry see them rack up on-baller type numbers week-in-week-out.

the middle provides elite service to the Yarram forwards, with James Shea and Josh Swift among the goals last week and Dan Vardy hoping to return prior to the end of the season the Demons really do look to be hitting form at the right time.

The Jets will be keen however to avoid a third loss on their home deck for the year and will certainly prove stiff opposition.

Keenan Hughes and Mitchell Luck ran far and wide last week to provide options right up the ground. Whether or not this unsettled YYN’s front half I can’t be sure but they certainly looked a lot more potent with at least one of those two nearer to goal and providing a foil for Dean MacDonald.

D-Mac may have been well held by Woodside’s Will Broadbent last week but the worrying news for the travelling Yarram line up is that the league’s leading goal kicker rarely has two quiet games on the trot.

WHEN Rosedale makes the trip to Tyers this week fifth plays sixth on the ladder.

As if to perfectly encapsulate just how close the season is, should the home side get the win they are a huge chance to end up third on the table come Saturday night.

A loss however would see them out of the five and with games to come against Heyfield, Churchill and Yarram they’d be no certainty to reclaim a berth in the post-season festivities come season’s end.

Rosedale has really hit their straps of late and with their midfield guns in Rohan Diamond and Dale Fleming being among their better contributors, the Blues would fancy their chances of mixing it with anyone.

Courtesy of a slightly softer run home than some of the sides they are competing for finals action with, Rosedale would see themselves as a genuine top three hope, and with Brandon McDonald hitting the scoreboard with some large numbers of late it’d be a brave person who puts a line through their chances of doing so.

AFTER all but locking away top spot with their super impressive win over YYN last week Woodside are again on the road when they make the trip to Glengarry.

Waiting for them is a Magpie outfit intent on shaping the back half of the season.

Excusing an ordinary result against Rosedale a fortnight ago, Glengarry has been better than okay over their last half a dozen outings and buoyed by an upset win over Heyfield last week there will be a buzz around the Magpies this week.

Woodside coach Michael Duncan, who was a genuine risk of falling asleep pre last week’s game so relaxed was he, will need to ensure the Wildcats are up for the contest from the get-go or he and his chargers run the risk of undoing many months of hard work.

With Dan Missen and Will Broadbent patrolling the back half and Ben Johnson, Jeremy Morgan and Josh Kennedy running amok in the middle the Wildcats looked every bit the ladder leaders when securing their win last week.

A more even spread of goal kickers with Duncan held to only a pair of majors will ensure the Glengarry coaching staff have a few names circled on the Wildcat team sheet pre-game.

Cameron Whiteoak, Tom Jessup and even Tom King all managed to push forward and get their name on the goal kickers list last week in a performance that now has surely convinced the league that the Wildcats are the real deal.

SALE City coming off a bye will undoubtedly be too good for Gormandale this week.

Oddly enough with the Bulldogs not in the finals hunt they remain the only side to have beaten Woodside this season.

When Sale City and Gormandale crossed paths back in Round 1 the Bulldogs ran out 77 point victors, but with Sale City freshened after the bye and Gormamdale having 11 players double up from the reserves to the seniors last week you’d expect the woofers to do all the barking late in the game and look to chalk up a three figure victory margin in the return bout.

CHURCHILL, who went down to Yarram last week has a much needed bye and will hope they can get a few players back on the park for the week after when they take on YYN. Heyfield and Cowwarr also have byes.

A look behind the scenes

TO the uninhibited there would appear to be very little that goes into producing the sport pages of The Express.

After all, how hard can it be writing a few words on local footy, attaching some photos and throwing the scores in?

While this might sound simple enough, many might be surprised to learn exactly what is involved from blank page to the time The Express hits newsagent shelves and mail boxes every Monday and Thursday.

Here, the Four Quarters team takes readers behind the scenes and behind the ink of how the sport pages come to be.

2. Sunday.

THERE is no escaping the fact if you want to be a sports journo you have to work Sundays.

Long after matches from the previous day are finished, the job then becomes to tell the stories of what took place.

Rolling into the office usually in trackies and with a two-sugar strong coffee in hand, Sunday work involves not only writing but going through the scores of each and every game.

Scores must be entered in a specific format, which means it is not enough to simply copy and paste from the GameDay website.

As the purpose of sport is to win, the winning team must be listed first on every scoreboard.

If the GameDay website has had a glitch or clubs have not entered

Express reporters Zac Standish and Liam Durkin run the rule over the past week in footy ZS: A bit of feedback from our last Four Quarters looking at the Valley’s connection to Fitzroy.

LD: Great to hear people enjoyed it and there are still some Fitzroy fans out there.

ZS: We heard from Peter McCartney who went to school with Alex Ruscuklic and another Fitzroy player Andrew Kuka who played one game in 1967.

LD: Steven Presley might have been part of the strongest rural school in Gippsland at Morwell High. They had Paul Abbott, Chopper Handley, Greg and Paul Dear. Shane Reid also sent through some great stories from his memories as a Royboy.

1. Saturday.

NATURALLY, the weekend is where the bulk of the sport pages for Monday’s issue get done, as without the games there is nothing to write about.

There are three football-netball leagues in The Express readership, which means the photographer has to get to three different locations.

This is not just a simple point-and-shoot operation, as the location and intensity of the sun has to be factored in. When the sun is too bright it can cause significant shadows, making the subject virtually unrecognisable.

The cameras settings also have to be absolutely spot on. Relying on auto-focus would be akin to playing Russian Roulette.

The ideal setting to take a football or netball photo is an overcast day because it softens the light and reduces dramatic contrast.

After spending around 30 minutes at each venue, the photographer heads back to the office in Morwell to go through and pick out the best shots. Around 900 photos are usually taken across the day.

On Saturday night a handful of images are chosen and touched up before being entered into the database. Each photo needs to be captioned properly, which calls on player jumper numbers to correspond to what is written on the team sheet.

If jumper numbers prove elusive there are a number of other ways photographers can help identify players such as boot colours, tattoos or strapping tape.

Photo captions need to include what is known as a ‘kicker’. Next time you read a photo caption in The Express, have a look for the words in bold - this is what the kicker is.

All in all it takes between three and four hours to edit all the images. A fair chunk of time when you consider only one or two actually make it onto the page.

On the ball

ZS: A couple of teams got their first win on the board last weekend.

LD: Stony Creek now has a win as a Mid Gippsland club and Warragul broke its duck as well.

ZS: Unfortunately it is not the same news for poor old Gormy.

Job to be done: Thongs and energy drinks are often spotted in editorial offices of a Sunday as journalist work to get the paper completed on time. scores it makes the task all the more irritating.

The writing stage consists of choosing the best game from each league to act as your lead and then making sure you follow a number of commandments in the journalism world.

While it is easy to simply write ‘Team A defeated Team B’, doing so makes for a boring yarn. Because of this, the Sunday sports writer will spend part of the day ringing a coach to get some insights, collecting statistics or relaying something interesting they might have seen the previous day.

Given there are three leagues to write about, the writer cannot afford to repeat themselves too much, and so the thesaurus comes to the fore.

Football cannot just be referred to as a ‘game’, it can also be a ‘match’, a ‘contest’, or a ‘battle’.

Similarly, ‘quarter’ is another word that cannot be overused, so ‘term’, ‘stanza’ or ‘the next 20 minutes’ are inserted.

The author cannot use a variety of common phrases usually seen in football parlances as they make no sense when taken literally.

You cannot write things like ‘the

game kicked off’ because there is no kick-off in Australian Rules football, and you can’t say a team ‘came to play’ because unless they didn’t take the field then it is impossible for them not to come to play.

In giving stories a bit more depth, team nicknames can be a useful way of adding some colour, such as ‘the Saints marched to victory’, or ‘the Magpies’ wings were clipped’.

Generally each story is about 1000 words, and once all the football and netball articles are done, reread and others that come in via dedicated publicity officers subedited, they are formally put into a computer program editing system and allocated to their dedicated page.

Once the stories are allocated the pages are then laid out ready to be proofed the following morning.

Push everything back a few hours if a league decides to play Sunday games.

3. Monday.

THE alarm is off as early as 5am for the mad dash to the finish line as the paper needs to be done by 7.30am to hit the press and get out into the community by the time

people sit down for lunch. While most people are still fast asleep early Monday morning, journalists and editors are running their eyes over pages one last time before giving them the all clear.

After getting the green light, pages are flagged ready to be typeset. The production team then send or typeset the imposed pages onto printing plates by platemaking machines at the press site ready to be printed by huge industrial printing presses off site from The Express office.

Bright office lights and a 6.30am time can play tricks with your eyes, as words such as coach and couch look identical.

The early mornings are spent making any last minute changes and also entering scores that come in late from truant clubs.

Headings also need to fit perfectly to ensure there is no white space, and can’t just be ‘Gippsland League Round 10 wrap up’.

There is little to no time to sit back and admire your work, as when one paper finishes another starts and it is shoulder to the wheel getting everything in order for Thursday’s edition.

After Monday’s issue has gone to press it is a matter of getting your words in order to preview the next round of matches, which means three more football stories and three netball ones as well.

4. Tuesday-Wednesday.

WITH the football and netball previews done, Tuesday and Wednesday is dedicated to collecting and arranging stories to help fill the other sport pages for Thursday’s paper.

Soccer, baseball, hockey, horse racing and an array of other codes need to be given coverage, and if photos are concerned, they also follow the timeline described earlier.

By Thursday, the photographer has worked out which games they will be covering on Saturday, while Friday acts as a calm before the storm as the cycle starts all over again.

LD: Pretty much half the reserves team had to double up last week if you can believe that.

I did a podcast with Early (coach Daniel Earl) before the season and he knew this year was going to be a battle but surely even he didn’t think it was going to be this much of a battle.

ZS: At the other end of the ladder Woodside is a game clear on top.

LD: They continue to amaze the Wildcats.

Amazing on a number of fronts, their only loss has been by a point and they have been involved in six games decided by less than five points.

ZS: Another team that has been involved in close games this season is Mirboo North in Mid Gippsland. The Tigers have won three games by one point.

LD: It’s extraordinary really. Their luck has to run out eventually surely.

ZS: Only two rounds left in Mid Gippy, and one game left for Newborough who finish up this season.

LD: They play Stony Creek at home so hopefully for their sake they can end the season on a high.

ZS: It would have to be one of the earliest finishes to a season ever, we aren’t even at the end of July yet.

LD: The Bulldogs will be holding their 1990 and 2000 premiership reunions on the day.

ZS: The 2000 flag was a fair Cinderella story I believe?

LD: Absolutely, Newborough came back from 42 points down in the prelim against Traf and beat Yinnar in the granny after losing to them by 90 points in the semi. Craig Skinner leading the way as coach.

ZS: To the Gippsland League and Leongatha once again just seem to be operating like a well-oiled machine.

LD: The two teams from South Gippsland are setting the pace. Wonthaggi was mightily impressive on the road last week.

ZS: Can Maffra make finals?

LD: I wouldn’t put it past them. They are only two games out with a very soft draw coming home. If they beat Drouin this week they will be back to within four points of the top five.

Valley rivals ready to square-off FOOTBALL GIPPSLAND LEAGUE

AS the Gippsland League ladder continues to take shape, teams with aspirations of taking their campaigns past the regular season will be challenged with getting through Round 13 by adding another tally to the W column.

This time of year is something of no-man’s land on the football calendar, as battle fatigue sets in even though the grand final is still 10 weeks away.

Because of this, performances over the next fortnight don’t have to be overly spectacular, as the emphasis just needs to be on grinding out wins and getting through to the next game.

Those in football parlances often talk about ‘the grind’, and this is perhaps most evident in the month of July when the weather is at its coldest, the nights at their longest and football mentally can be at its hardest.

When ladder positions are finailsied in coming weeks the question could well be which teams passed ‘The July Test?’.

TRARALGON and Moe will renew hostilities.

The Maroons will travel to Ted Summerton Reserve but take home team responsibilities.

There will be no shortage of motivation for players from either team to walk off the ground victorious, as the Traralgon-Moe rivalry has been built over decades and been passed down from generation to generation.

Moe was beaten by a better team in Wonthaggi last week and will want to get back on the winners list.

Traralgon climbed into the top five after toppling finals aspirant Drouin, and would love nothing better than to silence the parochial Lions crowd with victory.

The Maroons have enjoyed a solid fortnight with character building wins and have an opportunity to go in front of their win-loss ledger this weekend.

Tye Hourigan has been in good touch for Traralgon, while ball magnet Matt Northe will give the Moe coaching panel plenty to think about.

Northe kicked four goals last week in a best on ground display and looms as a potential match winner.

Moe defender Charlie Rieniets had his hands full last week taking on Troy Harley, and his task gets no easier with Maroons playing-coach Jake Best more than likely his next assignment.

Rieniets will take confidence into this match-up after a best on ground effort against Harley, and should receive support from the likes of Tom Long, Ben Maslen and Scott Van Dyk. Foot speed could well be a feature of this match.

Traralgon has livewire Jeffrey McDonald up forward, while Moe has Hayden Prestidge often seen roaming up and down the wings.

IT will be first-versus-fourth in Round 13 of Gippsland League netball.

Moe and Traralgon will face off, with the Lions out to maintain outright top spot on the ladder, while the Maroons will be keen to burst their way into contention for a double chance.

Traralgon dropped its first game since the start of May last week, going down to Drouin, but still sits half-a-game clear in fourth place from the Hawks.

Some friendly fire is expected in the match, as former Traralgon players Taylin and Ramayer Gourley are now playing for Moe. Having played a lot of netball with the pair, Maroons senior players Stacey O’Brien, Kate French and Caitlan Ponton should know how to combat the Gourley’s strengths and counteract the way they like to play.

Moe was brutally effective against Wonthaggi last week. Georgia Moody led the scoring with 36 goals and will be out to make life difficult for the Maroons defence on the weekend.

Morwell will welcome Bairnsdale.

The welcome might not be all that friendly from the Tigers, who simply need to win to stay in touch for a finals berth.

The reigning premiers have taken off after their AFL counterparts in recent weeks, losing their last three games.

An assignment against the bottom placed Redlegs will be a game Morwell is expected to win, but winning might only be half the job as the Tigers will also see this game as an opportunity to boost its percentage.

Ellie Pollutro and Chloe Radford each played solid games last week and will want to back up those efforts.

United: Moe players will wear specially made t-shirts in honour of Riley Pearce this weekend. to thump the ball long distances off one or two steps may prove decisive if entries are a bit shallow. Half forward Harri Sim has been busy around goals this season with 12 to his name, and has also applied countless pressure acts and sacrificial running to help set up scoring opportunities.

Northe will more than likely be joined by two men with the same first name but different spelling in Connor Ambler and Conor Little in the Traralgon midfield.

The Maroons have no shortage of players to roll through the engine room, with Jackson McMahon or even veteran Mark Collison to help sure things up if the opposition happens to get on top.

Away from the game it will be a highly emotional

day for the clubs, who will take billing as the feature game for Mental Health Round.

The Mental Health Round was originally scheduled to be held for the Traralgon-Moe clash in Round 7 but had to be rescheduled due to lockdown.

The initiative will carry added significance given events of recent times when shock waves reverberated around the two clubs with the passing of much loved figures.

Moe players will be wearing specially made t-shirts for the late Riley Pearce on the day.

Given Riley Pearce’s involvement with players from Moe and Traralgon in the under 18 age bracket, the thirds match is expected to carry heightened emotions.

The Moe-Newborough women’s team also played in a Mental Health Round against BoisdaleBriagolong last Sunday, with a specially designed jumper with Pearce’s number 16 auctioned off.

MORWELL will be desperate to secure victory when it hosts Bairnsdale.

The Tigers became the first team this season to lose to Warragul last week, and will be out for happier times when the final siren sounds at home on Saturday.

The Redlegs however will be equally desperate, as they have not won a game since the opening round of the season.

With the combatants only separated by one win and one ladder positions, a close game should be on the cards.

Tyler Brown and Josh Galea have been playing well for Morwell, and will want to contribute to a winning performance.

MAFFRA and Drouin meet in a game that could see drastic repercussions depending on the result.

The Hawks sit equal fifth and two wins ahead of the Eagles, who are not quite out of the woods yet as far as finals are concerned.

WONTHAGGI and Sale clash in a game between two top four sides.

The Magpies will travel across to South Gippsland to take on a team from that neck of the woods for the second week in a row.

Sale was well beaten by Leongatha last week, and their task does not get any easier taking on a Wonthaggi outfit fresh from beating top three team Moe on its home deck.

After this round every side will have played each other once which should give Sale an understanding of where it sits in the pecking order.

IT will be top versus bottom when Leongatha and Warragul face off.

The Gulls do go into the match with winning form under their belt, but taking on the Parrots away from home will surely be their most daunting task this season.

Boolarra will be confident of achieving victory over Foster. Both teams go into the clash with two wins under their belt, meaning a grand stand finish could be on the cards.

Hill End is back on the court this weekend following the bye and will start favourite against win-less Tarwin.

Mirboo North and Toora should be a close game going on ladder positions, while fellow finals bound teams Yinnar and Fish Creek will look to fine tune a few things and get a mental edge on each other before the real stuff starts.

who sit on equal points in seventh. Newborough must win and then hope other results fall their way next week.

Due to the bye next weekend, Newborough’s destiny will remain in the lap of the netball gods after the final whistle is blown on Saturday.

For now though the Bulldogs will just need to defeat the Lions and get themselves to 24 points.

As well as Stony Creek, Newborough’s main concern will be MDU, who takes on Morwell East.

If the Demons lose and then lose to Stony Creek in the last round, the Bulldogs could sneak into finals thanks to earning four points for the bye in the final round.

TOP spot will be up for grabs in Round 12 of North Gippsland netball.

First placed Woodside will take on second placed Glengarry, with just two points separating the combatants.

The Magpies will be aided by the home court advantage, and will take confidence into the clash owning to a six-goal win over reigning premier Rosedale only a fortnight ago.

Yallourn Yallourn North plays Yarram in a vitally important clash for the Demons, who will just need to win to stay in contention for place in the top five.

The Jets have been competitive this season and probably deserve to have more than two wins to their name, and will be out to put on a good show on their home deck.

Traralgon Tyers United is coming off a win, but the challenge of playing Rosedale will be a great one.

The Blues are only one game from the top of the ladder and surely have ambitions of taking that spot in coming weeks.

Sale City and Gormandale round out the fixture.

The Bulldogs sit inside the top five by two wins and will stay there assuming victory over the Tigers.

Churchill, Cowwarr and Heyfield get to put their feet up with a bye.

LATROBE Valley football umpiring legend Steve Buhagiar will tick off another milestone in his decorated career this weekend.

While triple figure milestones are more commonly seen in the football world by players and officials, Buhagiar will well and truly surpass that when he runs out for game number 1000.

Affectionately known by all in local football as ‘Budgie’, the Latrobe Valley Umpires Association stalwart’s longevity has been remarkable.

He ran his first game as a field umpire way back in 1984, and of the 999 games so far, 23 have been grand finals with 16 senior deciders in that lot.

As Buhagiar explained, his foray into umpiring stemmed from nothing more than a passing comment.

“I couldn’t get a game of football and someone said ‘come and try umpiring’,” he said.

“I started with six games to go in the season. I thought ‘I like this’ and I kept going and haven’t looked back after 36 years.”

Across nearly four decades Buhagiar has seen the football landscape change dramatically.

“When I first started it was one umpire, we used to bounce the ball, we’d go to Maryvale, Toongabbie, all the way to North Gippy ... just one umpire games in those days was very hard,” he said.

As well as umpiring grand finals, Buhagiar pointed to country championship carnivals during the heyday of the Latrobe Valley Football League in the early 1990s as highlights, as well as running alongside umpires from the big league.

“I umpired a game before the night grand final - Hawthorn versus North Melbourne back in 91’ at Waverley,” he said.

“As time went on we got to umpire with the VFL umpires, they’d come down from Melbourne so I got to umpire with Peter Cameron sometimes, they taught you things.”

When asked what it took to be a good umpire, Buhagiar said fitness and concentration were some of the keys.

“Be confident with what you do, when you blow the whistle you’re not going to change your mind - be confident with what you’ve paid,” he h said.

“You’ve got a job to do and every week is different. Some days you have a really good game, others nott so much”.

Buhagiar’s fitness has been a halllmark of his career, as amazingly, he oncee covered 22 kilometres in a game.

A fitter and turner by trade, his seervices to the Latrobe Valley Umpires Assoociation was formally recognised some time ago with the bestowing of life membership. derie of the Buhagiar said it was the camarad umpiring fraternity and the footballl community that kept him going.

“There are a lot of good people aroound there, it is no different to a football club (tthe umpires), just good people ... love being aroun nd them,” he said.

Over the years he has worked alon ngside some of the greats of local umpires, and wished w to acknowledge the contributions of Alllan Haines, Dave Esler and Les Ponton.

As he is turning 58 later this yearr, Buhagiar reckons he doesn’t have too many years y left in him. He is currently second on th he all-time games tally at Latrobe Valley Umpires, and said he was happy to sit behind Don Wig ght, who is coming up to a lazy 1300 games.

“I’ve got no intention of catching h him,” Buhagiar said laughingly.

Fittingly, Buhagiar will umpire th he game between Yinnar and Fish Creek in the Mid Gippsland Football-Netball Leaguee this weekend. The game will link the geenerations somewhat as his first senior game in i 1986 was between Yinnar and Thorpdale.

The Latrobe Valley Umpires Assoociation will toast Buhagiar on Saturday nig ght at the Morwell Bowling Club, where singeer-songwriter Greg Champion will be a guest spea aker.

Celebrations are set to kick on thee following day at the Latrobe Valley Umpire headquarters h at Peter Siddle Oval.

Gippsland League adopts new model FOOTBALL

GIPPSLAND League and AFL Gippsland recently announced the Gippsland League would progress to a self-governance model for 2022 and beyond.

With the current service agreement between AFL Gippsland and Gippsland League set to expire on October 31 this year, the member clubs have been in discussion with AFL Gippsland over the last 12 months to explore what a selfgovernance model would look like.

In May this year, the member clubs with the support of AFL Gippsland opted to move to a self-governance model in 2022 including reimplementing a board of management to govern the Gippsland League.

Gippsland League has been administered by the AFL Gippsland Regional Administration Centre (RAC) since 2015.

In 2017, the Gippsland League member clubs voted unanimously to move away from an independent board to a governance and administration model under AFL Gippsland and the AFL Gippsland Commission.

This model saw AFL Gippsland take on full responsibility for the leagues operations, financial decision making and governance.

Member clubs indicated they would like to explore AFL Gippsland continuing the operational management of the league through the RAC, however, it was encouraged by AFL Gippsland that it was in the best interest of a self governing Gippsland League to also setup the business operations model for the league in 2022 and beyond.

“The time is right for the league to continue its growth and promote itself as the major league of the region” AFL Gippsland region manager Nic Fogarty said. ”It will be great to see the direction an independent board will take the league on the back of the off field and financial success Daniel Heathcote (Gippsland League league manager) has built over a number of years.”

A five person steering committee has been established to transition back to a self-governed system for 2022.

The five-person steering committee includes Heathcote, Fogarty, Clinton Taylor (Moe FootballNetball Club vice-president), John Schelling (Leongatha FNC vice-president) and Shane Bennett (Maffra FNC vice-president).

Serious knee injury means early end to Jiath’s season

THE breakout season of Morwell’s Changkuoth Jiath came to an unfortunate early end on the weekend after the 21-year old suffered a PCL injury when flying for a mark late in the third term of Hawthorn’s 62-point loss to Fremantle.

One of the most prominent players on the ground to that point collecting 18 disposals, seven marks and four tackles, Jiath was doing all he could to get his team back into the contest, with his absence in the final term having a dramatic effect on Hawthorn’s ability to move the ball.

Speaking after the game, Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson gave an update on how the club would likely tackle Jiath’s injury.

“Usually our way of treating these is to put them in some sort of brace and they come up over the next little while,” Clarkson said.

“We’ll probably take a conservative approach with him and with only six weeks it will probably mean that it would be doubtful he gets back for this year.”

St Kilda produced its best win of the season on Saturday night, stunning the in-form Brisbane Lions to claim a 32-point victory at Metricon Stadium.

Traralgon’s Tim Membrey would be one of the major catalysts behind this excellent team performance, as he put the Lions defence to the sword with a clinical performance at centre-half forward.

Kicking 2.1 on his way to claiming 17 disposals and a game high 14 marks, he worked superbly in tandem with young gun Max King and showed why he is one of the Saints’ most important players.

The Gold Coast Suns made it back-to-back wins on Victorian soil, as they triumphed by one point in what was a see-sawing affair at a blustery Mars Stadium in Ballarat.

Again featuring Latrobe Valley duo Ben Ainsworth and Sam Flanders, the pair proved themselves to be valuable pressure players in the forward half for the Suns and were part of a team that embraced the contest.

In his second game back since being recalled to the senior side, Ainsworth finished with 16 disposals, four marks and two tackles, while Flanders continued his extended run at AFL level with 10 disposals and an impressive six tackles.

Elsewhere, Gippsland Power and Moe thirds player Jess McGrath made his VFL debut at the weekend, playing for Richmond in the Tigers five-point loss to Collingwood at Punt Road Oval.
