Geelong preferred to Valley as home for big battery

MEMBER for Morwell Russell Northe has hit back at the state government for overlooking the Latrobe Valley as a site for a 300 megawatt battery that will be built near Geelong. Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio unveiled plans for the largest lithium-ion battery in the southern hemisphere to be installed near the Moorabool Terminal Station and provide 85 jobs.

The Australian Energy Market Operator signed an $84 million contract with French energy company Neoen to build and operate the Tesla battery for 11 years in time for the 2021-22 summer. Ms D’Ambrosio said the Victorian Big Battery will run between November and March to help take the load off the Valley’s ageing brown coal generators and help transition towards renewables. “We need a number of tools in our tool kit to ensure we have a well-managed

transition away from coal thermal generation, particularly in Victoria, to one that people feel confident about, she said. “We need to have a plan as we cannot afford to be cut short by decisions that maybe made on the other side of the world in terms of the life that’s left in our generators. However, Mr Northe accused the government of shying away from the Latrobe Valley, which has the existing

energy infrastructure and local expertise. “We hope the government can provide clarity over why the Latrobe Valley was not a more worthy location - particularly given the importance of jobs in the local community, Mr Northe said. “It’s been a surprise announcement and it’s somewhat disappointing there was not discussions about the location about this big battery, it seems the decision was made behind closed doors.
