GIPPSLAND based general practices and respiratory clinics clocked up a major milestone on Friday, administering their 100,000th dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

This comes after it was revealed Gip ppsland is tracking g well above the national average of doses per 100 people, with a figu fiigure u of 34 per cent compared to 25, as the total number of vaccinations for the regi gion i sat at 103,282 as of Friday afternoon.

Gippsland Primary Health Network chief executive offi ficer i Amanda Am m Proposch said this milestone serv rves v as a fantastic result for all Gippsland clinics, with many now administering both the Pfi fizer i and AstraZeneca vaccines.

“Gippsland health professionals are doing an incredible job in vaccinating our community and are an essential part rtt of the national vaccination rollout,” Ms Proposch said.

“Our figures fii show that our regi gional i vaccination ratios are exceeding the national equivalent which is an incredible effort.”

The Central Gippsland Family Practice in Moe is one of those clinics offering both versions of the vaccine, with general practitioner Dr Kingsley Kii Rajasingham saying the demand to receive the jab has increased.

“At the begi ginning i people were a little bit hesitant but since the lockdown a couple of months ago things have changed dramatically – at the start with the AstraZeneca we were giving gii 100-150 doses a week and then for the last four weeks we have started giving gii the Pfi fizer i and those numbers have jumped to 300350,” Dr Rajasingham said.

“Initially people probably thought ‘it is not going to come to Gippsland we will be fii fine’, but now they have realised COVID is going to be everyw ywhere, w it is not just a city thing, so since then we have had heavy demand, which is good because the lockdowns are making people realise the only way this will fin inish is if we get vaccinated.”

STAGE One of Newborough’s Haunted Hills Bike Park is set for a fittingly spooky opening after a recent announcement the newly-developed precinct will be accessible to the public for the first time over the Halloween weekend in October.

A project that is set to bring much-needed tourism to the Latrobe Valley region, the idea has been developed over a number of years by both Destination Gippsland and the Gippsland Mountain Bike (MTB) Club, as they went about securing the necessary funding to begin construction in February this year.

With works now well and truly underway, former Gippsland MTB president and current Destination Gippsland Tracks & Trails project manager Nick King said it was extremely exciting to have an opening date decided.

“It is ‘wheely’ exciting, Gippsland MTB were founded in 2008 and have been on a journey to design this gateway to Gippsland mountain biking park since 2012, so it has been nine years and we are finally set to open in three months,” Mr King said.

“We are very optimistic that we will still be able to host the opening event, simply because during COVID and these lockdowns mountain biking trails have all been able to continue operating, so to have a facility like this that people can access so easily and is so close to the community it is unreal.”

Mr King detailed the nine-year journey in getting this project off the ground and some of the assistance they received in making this dream a reality.

“Initially it was a meeting with Latrobe City Council and developing a really good partnership with the councillors, the Mayor and just trying to find a really suitable site in the Latrobe Valley for a mountain bike park – that is what started us on the journey and made us decide on the Haunted Hills area,” he said.

“It was then about applying to the federal government and presenting to them about how these types of projects are really good for the community, getting outdoors is so important so having that support from Minister (Darren) Chester and also Mayor (Sharon) Gibson allowed us to secure that crucial $1 million for Stage One and now be

and stay longer, so for our visitor economy this will be a massive asset – we want to have people eating in our restaurants, spending money at our retail shops and staying in our hotels, so this will go a long way to helping that,” he said.

“Having a world-class facility so close to Morwell, Moe and Traralgon, it will also allow local people to get out and enjoy mountain bike riding at a time where it is hard to get out and be active due to the lockdowns.”

For what is being dubbed as a “Halloween at the Haunted Hills”, he outlined what is in store for opening weekend.

“We are going to have ribbon cutting on Saturday the 30th, then we are going to have what they call a Shimano Grand Prix which is a four and six-hour endurance event,” he said.

“Then on the skull and crossbones pump track we are going to have a pumpkin head pump track challenge, so hopefully we get a nice turnout to that – and then in the evening we are going to have a family fright night ride so we encourage people to dress up and we will have a DJ and some nice entertainment set-up.”

“We have got seven other bike parks in Central Gippsland, so Haunted Hills will serve as the gateway to mountain biking in the region – the precinct has a variety of beginner, intermediate and advanced trails so it is perfect for people of all abilities,” he said.

“One cool feature is a pump track in the shape of a skull and crossbones for the kids to play on, so you will have people on skateboards, scooters and bikes anything with wheels will have fun on there – the park will cater for cross country riders, endurance riders, downhillers, we have something for everyone.”

An attraction that is set to bring people from across the state to the Latrobe Valley, Mr King said the benefits of the park for the local community were endless.

ORGANISERS of the highly successful Moechella music festival came together recently to discuss ways to see how the money raised from the event would best be spent.

The festival, held in May at the iconic Moe ‘Leggies’ Hotel, raised an incredible $16,000 for mental health and wellbeing advocate Mindfull Aus. Mindfull Aus founder Matt Runnalls met with Moechella organisers and Andrew and Kerry Pearce, parents of the late Riley whom this year’s festival was held in honour of.

The money looks set to be used in education through schools and local sporting clubs on issues surrounding understanding emotions.

Moechella Organising Committee member Dean Abbott said the festival was proud to play its part in lending a helping hand.

“It always tears at the heartstrings with a well-known local family being affected by such a tragedy,” he said.

“Hopefully the money we’ve raised goes towards preventing suicides in our community, especially among our young people.

“It’s really nice to know that we’ve raised this money and we’re handing it over to an organisation that has the community’s best interests at heart.

“The event was an overwhelming success, it was great to have the community support it as they did our previous event,” Abbott said.

“We’re always open to running another event for a worthy cause.

“I think one every second year is okay, there is a lot of effort that goes into running the event, it’s really about finding the worthy cause for us, if we find another worthy cause then absolutely we will support that.”

Bank: ATM to stay after branch closes

BANK Australia is promising to recruit new local skilled workers in Morwell and is expanding its Moe contact centre after it announced it was closing its Morwell branch to convert it into offices.

Bank Australia distribution head Richard Irving assured customers the bank would retain its ATM at the Commercial Road building after it announced the September 30 branch closure.

The announcement signals the fourth branch to depart from the Morwell central business district in the past year, with ANZ and Bendigo shutting shop and Commonwealth Bank relocating to Mid Valley.

Morwell has two remaining branches in town, with Westpac open at reduced hours and the National Australia Bank on Princes Drive.

Mr Irving promised Bank Australia would “still have a strong presence in Morwell” after the branch closed and there would be no job losses.

“The building where the branch is located will be renovated to create space for two floors of office space, ready to house a range of new roles we’ll be creating,” Mr Irving said.

“We’re excited to be making space for more people who will work across different teams including contact centre roles, lending specialists, systems operations and fraud prevention.

“These are skilled jobs and we’ll continue to recruit locally to fill these roles in the coming months.”

Mr Irving said Bank Australia was “recruiting heavily” for more staff in Moe to help keep up with customer demand for remote services as more people shifted to online banking.

Advance Morwell chair John Guy was dismayed Bank Australia was closing its local branch which was necessary for those unable to carry out online or remote banking.

Mr Guy said Advance Morwell had recently

shifted its finances to Bank Australia after Bendigo left town. He also accused Bank Australia of abandoning its tradition in the Valley, after it was formed out of the former SEC credit union to become a customer-owned bank.

“Maybe our next move will be to the NAB, but I hope they don’t decide to do the same thing, It’s certainly frustrating,” Mr Guy said.

“If Bank Australia is still holding a presence in that building, why not have a couple of tellers on hand for customers, as there will still be plenty of room in there.”

Member for Morwell Russell Northe said he would contact Bank Australia on behalf of local residents to see if it was possible to keep some banking services in Morwell.

Mr Northe said the withdrawal of so many bank branches from town “did not send a great signal to the retail sector” particularly after recent major Commercial Road streetscape upgrades.

“Morwell residents are feeling like second class citizens. I understand banking has changed over time and that there are less face to face interactions,” Mr Northe said.

“However, it’s imperative that banks also put people before profits and ensure there are adequate banking services in local communities.”

Latrobe City Council was sending its economic development team to work with the bank to maximise ongoing employment opportunities for the community and help with the refurbishment.

NAB Victoria retail executive Mil Kairouz said the “Morwell team would continue to be there for customer conversations in the branch”.

“Any changes regarding the branch will be communicated firstly with our customers and team,” Mr Kairouz said.

The Express contacted Westpac as to its plans for its Commercial Road branch.

Demolition set for this week ENGIE is planning to demolish Hazelwood Boiler House Two in a controlled explosive collapse towards the end of this week.

An ENGIE Hazelwood spokesman said the demolition is expected to take place between Wednesday and Friday, between 10am and 4pm.

The day and time are subject to favourable wind and cloud cover which will help mitigate dust and noise.

Boiler House Two was supposed to be knockeddown last month but was delayed due to the impact of severe storms and flooding in the region.

The collapse will mean only one of the former power station boiler houses will remain in Morwell, with the final one to come down before the end of the year.

A 700-metre exclusion zone will be set up, including closure of Brodribb Road between Nadenbouschs Road and Cemetery Avenue.

“The NIFPI centre in Gippsland will deliver jobs and growth through supporting the smarter use of our forest resources and assisting industry to extract greater value from our forest products.”

The federal and state governments are contributing $1.89 million to these successful projects, which is being matched by about $2 million of funding and in-kind contributions from the forestry industry and research agencies.

The Victorian Forest Products Association chief executive officer Deb Kerr said the NIFPI model had been successful in delivering innovation across the forest industry supply chain.

“Gippsland and the wider Australian forestry sector will benefit from the six projects, which will deliver outcomes for timber processing and forest management,” she said.

“The 2019-20 bushfires impacted commercial plantations as well as our native forests, so these projects are important to future proof and position the Victorian forest products sector from growing, through to processing and beyond.

“Thousands of people are proudly employed in Victoria’s forest industries, and these projects will keep them at the forefront of innovation going forward.

“Disappointingly, none of the funded projects are supporting Victoria’s sustainable native hardwood timber industry and I look forward to this being corrected in round two.”

“While controls have been implemented to reduce external noise emissions as much as possible, local residents are likely to hear a loud noise at the time of the demolition for a few seconds,” the spokesman said.

“This is unavoidable, given the size of the structure, and the nature and placement of the explosive charges necessary to safely affect a controlled collapse.”

The works are being carried out by contractor Delta Group in accordance with WorkSafe and Environment Protection Authority regulations.

Delta Group had carried out an asbestos removal program, and the demolition should not allow for airborne asbestos outside the immediate works zone.

Air monitors will be set up in surrounding areas and all asbestos-contaminated materials will be transported on internal roads to the EPA-licensed, on-site asbestos cell for safe disposal.

VICTORIA’S forestry industry is set to benefit from nearly $4 million of new industry transferable research under the first round of projects funded by the National Institute for Forest Products Innovation Centre in Gippsland.

Federal Assistant Minister for Forestry and Fisheries Jonathon Duniam and State Agriculture Minister Mary-Anne Thomas congratulated the funding recipients and welcomed the benefits these projects would bring to Gippsland and the wider industry across Australia.

“These projects will support innovation in forest product sectors such as timber processing and forest management, and provide a major boost for the forestry industry,” Senator Duniam said.

“Each project will directly benefit the forest industry in Gippsland, as well as the forestry industry across Australia.

“The research will investigate the impacts of fire on performance of timber projects, as well as the smarter use of spatial information for forest management, improving commercialisation of manufactured timber products, feral animal management and improvements to plantation productivity.”

Minister Thomas said the investment would drive innovation and collaboration, helping to secure Gippsland’s role in advancing forestry research in Australia.

“We are supporting the future of our local timber industry by driving innovation across the supply chain,” she said.

“Six projects with a total value of $3.96 million have been successful under the first round of the

Having undertaken extensive research of the different vaccines and its effect on people, Dr Rajasingham explained the eligibility process behind receiving the jab.

“The clear thing is for anybody over 60 you are eligible for the AstraZeneca and there is no reason why you shouldn’t have it, because the clot risk is so low and if you say you want to wait for the

Pfizer you will more than likely be waiting until next year,” he said.

“For people between 40-60 you are eligible for the Pfizer so there is no issue with the blood clotting, and we will make an appointment for you within a couple of weeks, anybody under 40 with the 1a or 1b eligibility can also get the Pfizer so we encourage them as well to come down and have it.

“Anyone else who is keen on the vaccine, unfortunately for them it is only the AstraZeneca available to them, so if you are in that younger age

group and still want to be vaccinated come and have a talk to your local GP and we will assess the risk – and in my opinion if you balance the risks and reward I believe the benefits are far greater.”

For those people that are undecided as to whether they want to get vaccinated, he had this firm message.

“I have done a lot of research on the vaccines and to me there is just no excuse that if you are eligible for the vaccine to be sitting on the fence, because you are not doing good by yourself, your

family or the community,” Dr Rajasingham said.

“The only way you can help everyone and get things back to some sort of normal is get vaccinated, so if you are eligible please go ahead and get it done because I can assure you the benefits far outweigh the potential risks.”

“I’ve just had enough”

HOSPITALITY businesses in the Latrobe Valley are reaching breaking point after the state entered its sixth lockdown in 18 months.

The owners of Traralgon’s Aura Café voiced their frustrations and desire to sell the business in a Facebook post following Thursday’s lockdown announcement.

Brook Lavery labelled Victoria’s sixth lockdown as the most emotional yet.

“I haven’t really been that emotional for the first five lockdowns but this one just got to me,” he told The Express.

“We’ve just come back from two weeks (of lockdown) and we had basically a full house booked in for tomorrow night, Saturday lunch and Saturday night was going to be really good.

“You seem to take a couple steps forward and then a couple steps back, you work hard to keep your business on track and then it gets ripped away from you.”

As the weight of a sixth lockdown begins to crush businesses, Mr Lavery said it has become more cost effective to remain closed than try and adjust.

“The business actually seems to make more money by being closed two days a week because we don’t have to pay wages,” he said.

In addition to his own lockdown woes, Mr Lavery said his staff are bearing a considerable amount of the lockdown brunt after having several of their shifts cancelled.

“It’s not really me, it’s the staff that I feel for and that’s what gives me anxiety, the fact that I’ve got to find a way to pay these guys and give them shifts,” he said.

“The staff still have food they need to put on their tables.”

“You’ve just got to cross your fingers and hope you have a really good takeaway, but with that you can’t afford to have all your staff on because if you’re not busy then you’re basically throwing money down the drain.”

During last month’s two-week lockdown the café was eligible for just over $7000, yet despite this funding Mr Lavery said current financial support doesn’t come close to covering total losses.

“I’m not complaining, but it’s not enough,” he said.

“I know that the government give us some handouts, but it costs us $5000 just to operate for the week so that (support) doesn’t go very far.”

Such dire circumstances has meant Mr Lavery and wife Justine have found themselves constantly focused, adding further stress to an already difficult

situation. “It affects us the most, the constant pressure to be thinking about the business all the time,” he said.

“We get phone calls at 11.30 at night or you’re home constantly thinking about having to change the menu to advertise on social media, it just consumes your time,” Mr Lavery said.

With two school-aged kids at home, Mr Lavery said having to take on extra work to save on staff wages has placed additional stress on family life.

“It affects the kids too, when you need to save money it means we have to work harder,” he said.

“We’ve been down here since 8.30 this morning and we’re supposed to be doing home-schooling today, she’s having to do that on her own, the other one’s doing year 12 so she’s got to figure all that out on her own as well.

“I’ve just had enough.”

Motorists urged to be aware of increased log truck traffic HANCOCKS is asking residents in sections of the Strzelecki Ranges to be aware of increased log truck traffic as it begins salvaging destroyed plantations after the severe storms in June.

A HVP spokesperson has advised locals in Budgeree, Boolarra South, and Jeeralang North areas to be on high alert for more trucks on certain routes.

HVP has identified major restrictions to accessing storm damaged plantations after completing further field assessments, with numerous roads in the Strzelecki Ranges blocked by trees.

It found considerable damage to logging access roads, with some roads incapable of supporting empty or loaded log trucks.

“Safety concerns are that impacted roads have extremely soft shoulders, loss of road width or compromised integrity,” the spokesperson said.

“These factors created narrowing of road area, making roads unpassable and impacts vehicle travel.”

HVP is working directly with local councils and DELWP to manage the continued storm recovery,

and is also participating with Recovery Victoria Storm Recovery Forum in Gippsland.

“Many harvesting crews had no access to harvesting machinery until roads were opened.

This took days of work to clear impaired access,” the spokesperson said.

“The major constraint to getting damage areas cleaned up is access. HVP has identified numerous landslips, eroded road surfaces and washed out roads that will take months to repair.

“Limited access is affecting HVP capability to remove windthrown trees across fencelines as some locations will require harvesting machinery to remove these trees.”

Budgeree locals can expect increased log trucks on the western end of Whitelaws Track and Budgeree Road through August and October. Boolarra South residents need to be aware on the Foster BoolarraGrand Ridge roads, Olsens Road, and Snowdens Road. The Jeeralang North and Jeeralang West roads will also be impacted in September.

BlazeAid makes presence felt throughout region

FARMING charity BlazeAid expects to be in the region until the end of the year helping property owners recover from the magnitude of June’s storm damage within the Latrobe City area.

The most recent spate of COVID lockdowns put a halt on the local volunteer effort, with a smattering recently returning to the Yinnar Recreation Reserve base camp.

BlazeAid Yinnar camp coordinator Luke van der Meulen was on the ground after the district was ravaged by the 2019 bushfires.

Back then, there were 30 properties listed for help rebuilding fences.

Mr van der Meulen said this time they had 158 properties on the books within the Latrobe City boundary and another 10 in South Gippsland.

“It’s a much bigger job than last time and this time we are working into the depth of winter,” Mr van der Meulen said.

“Given the amount of properties we have, we hope to get a lot of units out every day to get the jobs behind us. This will be a big fix.”

Mr van der Meulen said much of the work entailed removing fallen trees from infrastructure and fixing damaged fences from flooding and savage storms.

He said they were on the hunt to borrow fourwheel drive tractors to access wet paddocks or small excavators to tackle the jobs at hand.

“In some places, it’s acres and acres of huge trees that have come down. It’s like pick up sticks with tree upon tree uprooted,” he said.

Mr van der Meulen said he expected about 20 volunteers to return to base camp once further COVID restrictions had eased, and encouraged locals to jump aboard.

He said previous to the July lockdowns, many of the volunteers had come from all over Victoria, with some coming from South Australia.

Research looks at disaster impacts

A NEW study out of the Monash University School of Rural Health in Churchill has uncovered implications for how young people may or may not bounce back from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The doctoral research study was led by Rouve Jan Forbes and supervised by both Dr Margaret Simmons and Dr Julie Willems.

The research looked through the lens of the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires in Gippsland, examining the post-disaster impact on 20 young adults ranging from their late teens through to their early to mid-20s.

Researcher Ms Forbes was working in the region as a community health nurse following the bushfires when she became alarmed by the lack of support available for young adults.

“I was trying to find help for young adults in the area and every time I tried to find somewhere they’d say they don’t have programs for 18-24 year olds,” she said.

“Sometimes they had lived longer in that place than their parents had, all their life, all their memories, everything there, all their friends, nowhere to come back to party and chat to people because they weren’t necessarily there any more.”

The study uncovered a lack of pathways available for young adults to tell their story and a failure to acknowledge personal and age specific needs influenced how quickly young adults recover post-disaster.

“It’s about acknowledging young adults and their specific needs and even as a group there’s differences within the group, those who might have parenting responsibilities, those who own homes through to those living with parents, so it’s really quite a diverse group and yet as a group it’s still not getting that acknowledgement,” Dr Willems said.

“It was a huge learning curve for me, the main two things that came out of it were that no one was listening to young adults stories and people were prescribing care, imagining what young adults might need but they weren’t speaking to them,” Ms Forbes added.

With a quarter of her research participants suffering from diagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder Ms Forbes said she was also surprised at how long after the initial event trauma still affected young adults.

“I was shocked that even six years after the fires a lot of that trauma still remained. The trauma went on a lot longer than I expected and the need had not yet been filled or acknowledged,” she said.

Ms Forbes and Dr Willems believe we should be using learnings from this study to deal with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has a similar impact to a bush fire disaster in the way young adults are mentally and physically displaced and often have their lives severely disrupted.

Dr Willems suggests delivering targeted support that isn’t tethered to the specific place the disaster occurred as well as understanding the timeframe of recovery.

“One of the interesting things about young adults is they tend to be a transient population, in terms of providing support we need to factor in solutions that aren’t tethered to the place the disaster has taken place,” she said.

“We also need to be cognisant of the long-term impacts, it’s not just the immediacy of the event, the effects can carry on for years and years afterwards.”

Ms Forbes suggests a heavier focus on the recovery of young adults post-pandemic by making more support available and said we need to be approaching young adults directly to better understand and tailor support.

“People need to go and ask young adults how they are coping with COVID-19,” she said.

“We don’t have the services for them, we don’t have the conduits, we don’t have the representation in parliament, so it’s not okay for people to say ‘well they can just talk’, it’s up to everyone in society to provide that.”

Yallourn impact on earnings tax - for ensuring Yallourn’s safe operation following heavy rain that caused cracking in the Morwell River Diversion.

The company paid $48 million in income tax for the first half of the financial year.

It comes after EnergyAustralia announced in March it would close Yallourn in mid-2028, underpinned by a multimillion-dollar support package.

It also made a commitment to build Australia’s first four-hour utility-scale battery by 2026 in the Latrobe Valley.

Earlier this year Mark Collette was appointed as company managing director following Catherine Tanna’s decision to retire.

“We provided the energy market, local community and Yallourn workforce clarity by announcing the plant’s retirement in mid-2028

with seven years’ advance notice,” Mr Collette said.

“Our approach sought to demonstrate coal-fired power can exit the market in a responsible and respectful way.”

Mr Collette assured EnergyAustralia would forge ahead with a planned maintenance schedule at Yallourn as well as its Tallawarra and Mt Piper power stations, in time for the summer peak.

“In addition, the essential work of relieving pressure on the Morwell River Diversion at the Yallourn mine continues, so we can a complete a damage assessment and determine what critical repairs can be made,” he said.

“Maintaining the health and safety of our people will continue to guide our approach to this work.”

ENVIRONMENT groups, unions and community organisations are calling on the federal government to expediate developing legislative frameworks for offshore wind to kick-start Gippsland jobs.

An open letter was delivered to Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester last week as federal parliament resumed.

Signatories included Gippsland Trades and Labour Council, Electrical Trades Union, Earthworker, Voices of the Valley, Friends of the Earth and Environment Victoria.

GTLC secretary Steve Dodd accused the federal government of “dragging its heels” on developing the appropriate legislation to get the industry moving in Australia.

“Offshore wind will provide jobs for our members and we want to see a lot of these jobs in manufacturing such as towers, and it’s the right step forward in power generation,” Mr Dodd said.

Yes2Renewables Gippsland campaigner Wendy Farmer said she feared the federal government would further delay developing the framework, which was supposed to be delivered by June.

It comes as plans for the 2000 megawatt Star of the South off the coast of Yarram are underway, with a second 1500MW proposal east of Ninety Mile Beach and another 10 around the country on the table.

However, these projects require a regulatory framework in order to proceed in Commonwealth Waters.

Ms Farmer said the two Bass Strait proposals would represent thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in regional investment for Gippsland.

“The legislation must be fit-for-purpose and geared towards maximising the jobs benefits of offshore wind, provide the level of investment the industry needs with its own agency, and address issues such as work, health and safety and environmental planning” Ms Farmer said.

“This is a huge opportunity for Gippsland and as the local member Darren Chester has an opportunity to show leadership by actively supporting the establishment of a jobs-rich offshore wind industry and delivering the open letter to Prime Minister Scott Morrison.”

Mr Chester said said he recognised offshore wind represented “exciting opportunities” as renewables would add to the country’s energy demands.

ENERGYAUSTRALIA is blaming reduced generation at the Yallourn Power Station following June’s heavy rainfall as playing a major factor in the company’s reduced earnings in the first half of 2021.

The show itself saw Ms Tatlow head to Melbourne, where her and three other contestants were briefed on what to expect.

“It’s filmed at Southbank. There is an audience there. I was told I could invite people to the taking to sit in the audience. I did not end up inviting anyone because I thought it would be too much pressure,” she explained.

“When I filmed it I was at a job in the Latrobe Valley, but by the time it went to air I had gone to a different job.

“We were shown a video explaining the rules of the game and we were told where we were going to have to stand and where we were going to have to move when we got down to the set and we all had to practise doing that in case we had to walk out from behind the podium into the centre and then walk out through the door.

“There was lots of information about what to do if we started to feel ill on set or if we thought there was something wrong with our question - there was a contestant producer there helping us.

“It’s filled mostly in order so from the start where Tom Gleeson walks out those are the first shots that are filmed.

“Most of the show was done in one take.

Occasionally there would be pauses from the control room letting everyone know to stop for a second and adjust somebody’s outfit or adjust the cameras or get Tom Gleeson to repeat a line but everything the contestants said was done in one take.”

Putting her game face on once the opening round began, Ms Tatlow said she aimed to start on a positive note.

“I really wanted to make sure I got the questions in my subject correct, those five questions at the beginning of David Bowie,” she said.

“I figured if I could get those all right it would set up me to do well later and give me a bit of confidence.”

After nailing all five questions on Bowie, the next challenge saw a multiple choice round on questions relating to Australian singer Delta Goodrem, while the third round was basic trivia.

Making her way to the final round, Ms Tatlow was pitted against a PHD student named Andrew and his expert subject US serial killers.

With dramatic music humming in the background, Ms Tatlow was up to the task and got her first four questions correct to take a 4-2 win in the penalty shootout style round.

On getting the winning question right, Gleeson then announced Ms Tatlow as “tonight’s Hard Quiz champion!”

Ms Tatlow accepted the Hard Quiz brass mug as her reward and was also given the perk of doing the shows “thanks for playing - hard!” sign off.

“I did not practise doing a sign-off. It was just completely improvised and I did a bit of a weird finger point which looked a bit strange on the TV … but oh well,” she said.

“The brass mug is very heavy. I didn’t get to take it home on the day because they send it off to get engraved.

“They film a bunch of episodes so they have a batch of mugs to send off. It arrived in the mail six weeks later in a big cardboard box.

“It’s got Hard Quiz embossed on both sides, my name engraved on both sides and it’s very shiny.”

After winning the show, Ms Tatlow then had to resist the urge to tell anyone.

“Afterwards I was pretty excited to tell someone, you’re supposed to keep it a secret, but I did tell my parents (about the win), it was very, very exciting,” she said.

“It was a really good experience. It’s not something that a lot of people do but makes a really great story to tell. It was a lot of fun.”

Despite being a Hard Quiz champion, Ms Tatlow hasn’t let the title get to her head.

“My family does have a copy of the Hard Quiz board game that we got at Christmas and I did not win,” she said laughingly.

“So I’m definitely not the quiz master.”

Now working in Hampton Park, Ms Tatlow was never able to see Bowie live before his death, but has kept her affinity with the music legend alive through no shortage of albums, posters and memorabilia.

As for the brass mug, it has taken on a practical use in the time since “It’s on display in a bookshelf … I keep a candle in it,” Ms Tatlow said.

THOSE channel surfing their television sets recently may have seen a local representative on the ABC game show Hard Quiz.

Newborough’s own Erin Tatlow not only appeared on the show, but went on to win thanks to her expert knowledge of legendary musician David Bowie.

Although the episode was a repeat after originally airing in 2018, the story of what went on behind the scenes for Ms Tatlow is an interesting one nonetheless.

The show, hosted by comedian Tom Gleeson, combines comedy and trivia, with Gleeson and the contestants usually baiting one another throughout the duration.

Ms Tatlow said she decided to apply to go on the show after a passing comment from her father.

“My dad mentioned once after he watched the show that I could go on it and possibly do well so I decided to apply online and see how it went,” she said.

“I’m a fan of the show, I watch it quite regularly, I like trivia shows in general and I’m obviously quite a big fan of David Bowie and know a lot of trivia about David Bowie.

“I enjoy trivia, I do the quiz in the paper every day and watch the occasional quiz show or maybe do a pub quiz … I wouldn’t call myself an expert, just an enthusiast.”

As Ms Tatlow explained, putting her name forward at the end of 2017 started an intensive process.

“The online application has a couple of aspects, it has a multiple choice quiz that is timed and you’re not supposed to use resources like Google, and then there is a few forms that you fill in to indicate your personality traits, interesting things you’ve done in your life, interesting things about you that might make you a good candidate for a TV show,” she said.

“The physical audition was a couple of months later so I was contacted to go to the ABC studios in Southbank.

“It took three-four hours to have a group interview, there was 10 people at a time where the producers would ask questions about yourself and about your knowledge base.

“We did another multiple choice quiz then as well to make sure we had some trivia knowledge.

“We had a buzzer round to practise doing the quiz and then there was a filmed interview at the end.”

A speech pathologist by profession, Ms Tatlow said choosing a subject that didn’t leave too much room for unique questions like David Bowie as her expert subject ensured she would be in with a fighting chance of seeing her way through the rounds.

“It’s a bit of a risk to go for a subject other people are going to know about,” she said.

“On my episode a couple of times the other contestants knew the answers to my questions because they were fairly well known answers so you have to be really quick with the buzzer (contestants can gain bonus points by ‘stealing’ answers in someone else’s expert category).

“The producers are really good, when I was at the audition they made sure of the breath of my knowledge on the topic because they don’t want to ask you questions that you’re not going to know. They don’t want to ask you questions that are really, really, tricky they want to give you a chance, so during the audition process I let them know where my strengths were.

“I knew a lot of details on track listings, album order releases, I knew a lot about his personal life and early life, I didn’t know so much about personal necessarily, things like statistics or progression of number ones I didn’t know, you let them know the breath of your knowledge and let them work with that.

“They have researchers to research the topics and make sure the questions are hard, obviously

Disability needs should be front of mind Think of us: Local musician and disability advocate Phillip Chalker wants more to be done to make daily tasks more accessible to locals with a disability.

LOCAL musician and disability advocate Phillip Chalker is calling for more to be done to make daily tasks more accessible to people with disabilities.

Mr Chalker, who is vision impaired has found it increasingly difficult to carry out his day-to-day routine in Traralgon without having to ask staff from businesses and the public for assistance.

He is calling for more awareness around issues people with a disability face and wants to see more considerations being made during the design process of new services and infrastructure.

“We basically live in a sighted world,” he said.

“It really makes my life a lot more difficult.”

Mr Chalker has flagged a new coin deposit machine that was recently installed at the Commonwealth Bank in Traralgon.

The new machine, which as a busker Mr Chalker uses multiple times a week, requires a card to be inserted, as opposed to the older models which would print a receipt that could be presented to a teller in exchange for bills.

Mr Chalker said that although staff are willing to provide him assistance, this reliance makes him feel much less independence than if he were able to carry out the task himself.

“I shouldn’t have to always ask the staff to help me because it takes away my independence,” he said.

“It gives me heaps of difficulty because you put the coins in and then you can’t do anymore because the next step is using your card and then touching a screen that doesn’t talk.”

A Commonwealth Bank spokesperson said the bank was looking to make the ATM more accessible

but due to current lockdowns at the manufacturers location, changes aren’t able to be made for at least another four weeks.

“We are reverting the software to be a simple

transaction, currently the customer has to enter a lot of information via a touch screen so we are changing the software back to our old system which I understand the customer preferred,” they said.

“We are very open to working with the customer so once it is upgraded we will get in touch with them to see what they think and whether we need to do more.”

Mr Chalker said accessibility issues were rife within parts of the community and changes to things like the location of Kmart checkouts away from the front of the store provided more issues for people with a disability than those without would realise.

“Yes I understand I might need a hand getting the product if I go by myself but then finding the counter, they were easy to find at the front but now they are further to the back,” he said.

“It makes me lose my independence, I shouldn’t have to go up to the people at the front of Kmart and ask if they can please take me up to the counter.”

Mr Chalker believes increased-accessibility will go a long way to improving the quality of life for locals with disabilities.

“It wouldn’t only help blind people but everyone with a disability, the more independence the better,” he said.

CULTURALLY and linguistically diverse (CALD) women in the Latrobe Valley will receive free health education to support them in navigating through the major health and wellbeing impacts brought on by COVID-19.

The program is funded by the Working for Victoria initiative, Gippsland Women’s Health and Gippsland Multicultural Services.

The program works through the formation of a team of four culturally diverse, bilingual women’s health educators who will begin to deliver health sessions across different ethnic communities in the Latrobe Valley.

Gippsland Multicultural Services chief executive director Tania Ryan said the creation of the program was driven by a need for culturally specific health information amongst the CALD community and women, often being community and family leaders were the ideal liaison for this information.

“We began recognising that for ethnic and migrant women, they haven’t had the same access to information to be able to make decisions for themselves and their families,” she said.

“In our migrant communities, they are leaders in their families in making these decisions so they need that access to information to really be able to make an informed decision.”

Ms Ryan believes delivering tailored support specific to the region’s CALD women is necessary in assuring they are able to make the best decisions.

“Understanding the demographics and the geography of Gippsland is important and it needs

to be tailored to work, a one size fits all doesn’t work across Victoria and it doesn’t work for our ethnic and migrant women in Gippsland,” she said.

“Going to the women themselves, in a setting that they feel comfortable with peers and community around them to support them to ask the questions they have, to have information presented in a language of their choice and to have access to a trusted source is really important,” she said.

The all-women team have been put through intensive training by the Multicultural Centre for Women’s Health to be able to deliver health information sessions on issues such as the COVID19 vaccination rollout, mental health, sexual and reproductive health and family violence.

Ms Ryan said the program is focused on not telling women what they should do, but instead empowering CALD women to be able to make their own health-related decisions.

“It’s the empowerment we’re most excited by, recognition that these women have the right to information presented in a way that’s right for them to make decisions about what’s right for them, their family and community so they aren’t scared about the unknown,” she said.

“They’ve (team of educators) learnt how to share information specifically for ethnic and migrant women, how to listen to their concerns and work through the myths and misconceptions that are in our community and provide information in language and to understand the cultural barriers that go with the mainstream information that’s being distributed.

“It’s really equipping the region as well with those workers.”

NAIDOC at Morwell Central Primary

THE students at Morwell Central Primary School recently enjoyed working in multi-age groups for NAIDOC Week and celebrating the history, culture, and achievements of both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Everyone had the opportunity to dress in the colours of the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander flag and complete related activities, including writing a poem, playing a game, and colouring a poster.

The students also watched various videos and listened to the story ‘Coming Home to Country’ by Bronwyn Bancroft.

This year’s theme for NAIDOC Week was ‘Heal Country’ which emphasised that we need to protect our land, water, sacred sites and cultural heritage and move into the future together as one.

St Joseph’s show Olympic spirit

THE Olympic Spirit was alive and abundant at St Joseph’s Primary School, Trafalgar Was students came dressed to school ready to represent their chosen country.

Rotations throughout the day included interesting facts of Olympic History including how the Games came to be and why the Olympic Games were cancelled throughout World War II. Students were able to design their own mascots for their countries and make headbands, (Hachimaki) with inspirational Japanese slogans that align with the school’s Japanese language program.

The afternoon comprised of sports activities focusing on the School Wide Expectations of Inclusion, Respect, Resilience and working well in Teams. Students were awarded points on how well they displayed these School Wide Expectations.

The winning country was France and students were awarded their Gold Medals alongside our Olympic Cauldron whilst the French National Anthem rang throughout the school. Secretly, staff felt every student gave their upmost efforts and every student was a winner!

Sacred Heart’s Green and Gold Day THE Sacred Heart students celebrated and supported the Australian Olympics by participating in a ‘Green and Gold Day’.

The students had the opportunity to wear something green or gold.

The junior students also took part in a few activities at the end of the day such as sand bag throwing, egg and spoon race and running activities.

While the seniors throughout the week have been researching a favourite athlete and incorporating their information within their writing activity which involved complying and presenting a biography on that chosen athlete. The day was about painting the country in our national colours and being proud of Australia’s sporting achievements, it’s about all Australians coming together and celebrating the green and gold.

STUDENTS at St Gabriel’s Primary School in Traralgon recently participated in an Olympic themed fun day.

The wonderful team of specialist teachers, Damian Hogan (physical education), Angela Edey (Italian), Melinda Leech (performing arts) and Laura Shea (visual arts) put together a fabulous program for the children to celebrate the Tokyo Olympics in their own way through each of their curriculum areas.

making Olympic torches, foil statues and flags, designing medals, acting out acceptance speeches and backyard Olympics sport challenges.

It was a wonderful way to be together as a school community even though most of the students were learning at home.

Students who were at school didn’t miss out, as the specialist teachers were supervising across the school and made sure everyone could join in the fun.

Key Responsibilities: The incumbent will be expected to have input into and support the following key responsibilities, which include but are not limited to: ● Ensure Mine is maintained in a safe and stable condition consistent with Mining Licence. ● Ensure mine design technical data recording and monitoring systems remain operational and all rehabilitation data is maintained for further reporting. ● Lead and manage all technical resources on site, including but not limited to surveyors, drilling teams, geotechnical stability monitoring teams, geological, hydrogeological, and rehabilitation support roles. ● Ensure all rehabilitation activities including ash ponds, cooling ponds and land remediation are completed as per design for the site and in accordance with all relevant legislation.

About You: To be successful in this role, you will have extensive technical knowledge and experience in operational and engineering related mine management. You will have an understanding of the importance and complexities of ensuring safety in a mine and/or rehabilitation project and work with a safety comes first mindset. You are adept with leading government responses such as work plan variation technical process, compliance matters with the Mining Licence legislation and relevant reporting to mining regulatory authorities. You are an effective communicator and have proven interpersonal skills including the ability to interface with multidisciplinary teams across technical, operational, commercial and legal disciplines at all levels.

Experience in mine closure and rehabilitation would be highly regarded.

The Role: Rare opportunity for a Senior Project Manager to join us and be a part of Australia’s biggest rehabilitation project to transition the former Hazelwood mine and power station site to a low carbon future and to support new commercial and recreation uses. This role will be second in charge to the Rehabilitation Project as required.

The Senior Project Manager will develop and manage a program of continuing site closure and rehabilitation civil earth works, site remediation activities in accordance with EPA approved Clean-up Plan and work closely with the Hazelwood Rehabilitation Project (HRP) leadership team to ensure a high-quality project deliverable that meets project milestones and regulatory commitments. The role will provide expertise and support to the HRP Project team relating to the long-term stability of the Mine as presented in the project Rehabilitation Closure Plan.

The role is based on-site at the Hazelwood Rehabilitation Project in the Victorian regional area of the La Trobe Valley, near the town of Morwell.

Key Responsibilities: ● Lead a portfolio of Rehabilitation/Remediation projects across the HRP. This includes management and oversight of a small ENGIE project engineering team, contractors, consultants providing design and engineering services, labour hire and environmental consulting services. ● Undertake detailed assessments to determine design and geotechnical and environmental requirements with the assistance of external consultants and ensure that these assessments are independently reviewed by third party for the individual project requirements incorporating the whole of life design review for long term stability. ● Proactively identify, manage and develop technical work scopes in collaboration with multiple stakeholders and generate all project variations, project approval presentations and weekly / periodical reports. ● Develop construction objectives and criteria requirements so that project performance can be effectively measured and compliant to design during the construction phase(s). ● Prepare and present various reports on the project risks, cost and delivery model performance to key stakeholders including senior leadership teams.

About You: To be successful in this role, you will drive results and be able to engage, influence and persuade stakeholders at all levels. In developing and managing projects, you will implement strong governance, discipline and compliance processes supported by a high level of financial acumen. The Role: Newly created permanent opportunity for a Manager - Environment, Health, Safety and Quality (ESHQ) to be a part of Australia’s biggest rehabilitation project to transition the former Hazelwood mine and power station site to a low carbon future and to support new commercial and recreation uses.

The Manager ESHQ will report directly to the Project Director and will direct and manage a team of environmental, health and safety specialists in the delivery of a range of infrastructure demolition, civil construction and land remediation projects associated with the Hazelwood Rehabilitation Project.

The role is based on-site at the Hazelwood Rehabilitation Project in the Victorian regional area of the Latrobe Valley, near the town of Morwell.

Key Responsibilities: ● Manage EPA Victoria licence site compliance. ● Manage and coordinate site remediation activities as defined with the site Clean Up Plan, delivered through appointed environmental and remediation consultants and contractors. ● Maintain a strong working relationship with key Government Regulators including EPA Victoria, Worksafe Victoria and Earth Resources Regulation (DJPR). ● Provide leadership to the site re-rehabilitation project teams on all aspects of health and safety/hazardous materials and promote a positive and proactive environment that strives for excellence. ● Provide technical guidance and manage a small team of Health, Safety, and Environment professionals. ● Manage project compliance and audit functions. ● Prepare and present to Management various reports on potential or real project or regulatory risk, project progress and opportunities, key performance indicators and statistics and incident / safety reports as required.

About You: To be successful in this role, you will have experience in environmental and contaminated land management, including contaminated site assessments or largescale industrial remediation projects. You have broad knowledge of contaminated land field investigation methodologies and remediation technologies. You are adept in managing successful projects on time and on budget whilst displaying a high appreciation and understanding of heath, safety and quality management system requirements on complex work sites. You have effective communications skills and able to hold self and others accountable to meet commitments. You will have an understanding of the importance and complexities of ensuring safety in a mine and/ or rehabilitation project and work with a safety comes first mindset.

Crunch time: North Gippsland FootballNetball League has announced its finals venues for season 2021.

North Gippsland grand final slated for Heyfield FOOTBALL NORTH GIPPSLAND

THE North Gippsland Football-Netball League has announced its finals venues for season 2021.

All going well, finals will start Saturday, August 21, with the grand final to be held Saturday, September 11.

The NGFNL had already abandoned the remainder of its home-and-away season a fortnight ago, but opted to keep its finals as originally scheduled.

Seniors finals will see Yallourn Yallourn North take on Churchill in the qualifying final, with the

winner to play Woodside in the second semi-final while Yarram and Traralgon Tyers United will clash in the elimination final.

In addition, the NGFNL has decreed that footballers must play a minimum of three games to qualify for finals.

For netballers, the player will be considered eligible in any grade once they have played four games in a particular grade.

If a player has played six games in a particular grade they cannot go down a grade.

Where a player has played four games in two or more games then the grade the player is first selected to play in the finals series shall be deemed the players grade for the entire finals series.

Andrew recalls Paralympic journey

ANDREW O’Sullivan made the most of a bad situation after losing his leg in a motorbike accident 38 years ago.

Not only did he go onto win gold at the Paralympics, he is now giving back to others by creating the very thing that enabled him to win that gold medal - making prosthetic limbs for patients at Latrobe Regional Hospital.

As the Morwell-born O’Sullivan explained, he was heavily involved in able-bodied sports before his leg was amputated.

“I was into sport, I played footy, soccer, tennis and squash … all different sports,” he said.

“Even when I was in hospital in rehab the prosthetist there got me to run down a very long corridor and I thought ‘at least I can still run’.

“When I was getting one of my new legs fitted I saw an ad for some athletic games coming up.

“Then I went along to these games in Melbourne and that’s where it all started.”

Entering the world of para-athletics, O’Sullivan competed in 100 metre, 200m, 400m and relay events during his career.

O’Sullivan went to multiple international events, winning medals at every single one he attended.

He also received backing from locals in helping him get to various games, something he said he was extremely grateful for.

“I was lucky enough to have a lot of community support, different groups raised money for me to get overseas which was greatly appreciated,” he said.

“I was able to represent Australia for five years.

In 1986 I went to the FESPIC (Far East and South Pacific Games for the Disabled) Games which was the equivalent of the Commonwealth Games, ’87 I went to the Pan Pacific Games in America, ’88 I went to the Seoul Paralympics, ’89 to the FESPIC Games again and 1990 to the World Championships in Holland.”

Working under legendary coach Joe Carmody, who the athletics track in Newborough is named after, the pair worked together to maximise O’Sullivan’s potential.

“Joe was fabulous, he actually came up with an idea to shorten the stride length on my right leg which is my prosthetic leg and I would try and over-extend my left leg so that I am spending more time on my stronger side,” he said.

“I would try and get on and off my prosthetic leg as quick as I could and onto my left and stay there for longer.

“It wasn’t much, but there was definitely a difference in the stride length.”

Training consisted of a four day a week commitment and trips to Melbourne, where O’Sullivan would train and race against able-bodied athletes.

Amazingly, he never came last in a race against the able bodies.

O’Sullivan trained with a number of local athletes, including Moe-born long distance runner Julian Paynter, who went on to represent Australia at the 1996 Olympics.

Speaking of Carmody’s coaching, O’Sullivan said there was some unorthodox, but effective techniques.

“A funny story was Joe had athletes who did all different events - middle distance, long distance, sprints - we’d all pile into his car, he would drive out of Moe and he’d say ‘you out, you have to run back’, and then the next person (would jump out).

“Julian would be one of the last ones out and I’d be one of the first ones out.”

In terms of running with a prosthetic leg, O’Sullivan said there was a few things that were essential.

“You’ve got to have an excellent fitting socket, it doesn’t matter what type of foot you have, you’ve got to have a good socket,” he said.

“I’d be going down to my prosthetist once a month for fine tuning because it had to be such a

I don’t have an ankle, I don’t have a heel, I’m taking weight through the bottom of my stump through the bones so there is no sole of your foot to cushion so it’s different.

“If the socket is fitting it’s okay, but it’s not perfect like your normal leg.

“I had one of the first carbon fibre legs. The technology in the last 20 years has come leaps and bounds.”

O’Sullivan was able to wear normal runners during his career, with his socket finishing at around knee height.

Qualification for the Paralympic track team required athletes to run within five or 10 per cent of the world record depending on the event O’Sullivan was able to meet these marks, and jetted to Seoul for the 1988 Paralympics.

The opening ceremony saw 75,000 people fill the stadium, a moment O’Sullivan said he would never forget.

“It was phenomenal, the hairs on the back of the neck are standing up (thinking about it),” he said.

“A lot of the opening ceremonies you’re out the back marshalling, all the countries are getting

ready to be lined up, so when we came through the tunnel the joint was going off.

“That’s one memory that’s stayed with me all these years.”

Competing in the 400m, O’Sullivan flew the Latrobe Valley flag by claiming bronze.

“There was a full field and I got home in third,” he said.

“It was a personal best time so I was rapt. I was happy to get a personal medal and a couple of days later we got the gold in the four by 400m in world record time.”

The gold medal winning team of O’Sullivan, Nigel Parsons, Rod Nugent and Adrian Lowe ran the relay in 3:55.27 crossing the line before China and Germany.

Accepting his gold medal, O’Sullivan simply described it as “a very proud moment”.

Throughout his career O’Sullivan’s personal best times were 12.6 seconds for the 100m, 26 seconds for the 200m and 59 seconds for the 400m.

Come the early 1990s, O’Sullivan moved into areas other than competing on the international stage after getting married and starting a family.

Now living near Churchill, he still keeps fit by riding a bike and stays in touch with those he competed with and against.

While an amputated leg would have been reason enough to think his sporting days were over all those years ago, O’Sullivan story serves as a case in point into the opportunities that exists for people with disability in not only sport but in business as well.

“I’m a glass half-full sort of person, there is always someone worse than you,” he said.

“It could have been a lot worse, it never crossed my mind that I wouldn’t play sport again … I just did it.”

Uncertain outlook SPORT

LOCAL sport was dealt a further crippling blow last Thursday, as the state was plunged into yet another lockdown.

To borrow from cricketing parlance, with community sport now shut down half a dozen times since the start of the pandemic, the latest lockdown well and truly hit the majority of people for six.

It is the fourth time this year a snap lockdown has resulted in local sport being cancelled, following lockdowns in February and May extending into June and another that ended just a fortnight ago.

Players across the Gippsland League and Mid Gippsland Football-Netball League had been looking forward to returning to the field of play for the first time in three weeks, before the red flag was put up on Thursday.

Clubs were still able to train on Thursday night, but had to be in lockdown by 8pm.

Just what is to become of the football season remains to be seen, but given the current lockdown isn’t scheduled to end until this Thursday, there are doubts as to whether or not there will be games this weekend either.

The current timeline sets a nightmarish scenario for fixtures in the Gippsland League and MGFNL, who are both facing a race against the clock to ensure all teams play each other once.

In the Gippsland League, one more round needs to be completed for this to be the case, while the MGFNL still has to play two rounds to constitute a fair and equitable season.

A running joke that either Moe or Traralgon keep telling Premier Dan Andrews to put the state into lockdown to avoid playing each other has ensued in the weeks since the match was supposed to go ahead on July 17.

The North Gippsland Football-Netball League will not be faced with this problem as it has already

abandoned its home-and-away season and will play finals as originally scheduled, commencing August 21.

The NGFNL season was culled after Round 11, at which time all teams had played each other once.

Those in soccer circles met the same fate.

Unlike their footballing counterparts, the Latrobe Valley Soccer League played a round of senior and junior matches the previous weekend, albeit under very tight restrictions.

Restrictions at the time allowed community sport to resume, but no spectators were allowed to attend. LVSL clubs voted unanimously to play, while the league took the praiseworthy step of covering referee fees in senior and junior grades.

In a statement, Football Victoria said it had hopes players would be back on the pitch in a matter of days.

“At this stage, we anticipate that competitions will resume as scheduled next weekend,” it said.

“We encourage all clubs and associations to stay connected with parents and players to prepare them for the resumption of football.”

Like soccer, basketball, baseball, hockey and junior football also got a one-week restart, but will again have to be shelved until the lockdown is lifted.

With virtually two sporting seasons now wiped out due to COVID, battle fatigue from players, coaches and club committees is certainly showing.

In the eyes of most a cancelled 2020 made people realise how much they missed playing sport, but to go through it again may well have the reverse effect as it has made players demoralised, deflated and in the worst cases - defeated.

Matildas finish fourth in Tokyo

THE Olympic campaign of Teagan Micah’s Matildas came to a heartbreaking end on Thursday night, going down to the USA in a 4-3 thriller in the bronze medal match.

Coming into the game full of confidence after pushing gold medal fancies Sweden in the semifinal, the Australians were once again gallant in their efforts, with the class of the Yanks proving just too much in the finish.

For Moe-born goalkeeper Micah, the Olympics served as a coming of age as she unexpectedly took the starting role from veteran Lydia Williams and proceeded to be one of the Matildas standout performers across the tournament.

Missing star defender Ellie Carpenter courtesy of a last minute red-card in the semi-final, it wasn’t long before the Australian defence would be breached as star striker Megan Rapinoe converted a classy long range finish in the eighth minute to give the US the early advantage.

However, in customary Matildas fashion, they would quickly fight back with captain Sam Kerr once again standing up to level things up in the

17th minute – before the US would once again return serve through Rapinoe to retain their one goal advantage.

In what was a see-sawing affair dominated by the attackers, Carli Lloyd would extend the American lead in the shadows of half-time, with a 3-1 score line at the main change making it an uphill battle for the Australians to reach the podium for the first time in an Olympic Football competition.

The second half would begin in similar fashion to the first, as Lloyd once again converted a chance from inside the box to have the Matildas three goals down and on the brink of rout.

Forced to play with complete freedom to try and pull of a miracle, the Australians would quickly be rewarded as a Kyah Simon cross into the box found the head of Caitlin Foord in the 54th minute to restore some sort of hope.

The following 30 minutes would see the side’s trade attacking blows but find themselves unable to find the back of the net as desperation continued to grow for the revitalised Matildas.

With the United States destined for victory, Australia would provide once last twist to the tale with a long range strike from Emily Gielnik finding the bottom left corner in the first minute of stoppage time.

However, the final seven minutes of injury time would unfortunately not yield a coveted equaliser as the Americans held on defensively to come away 4-3 victors.

Coming into the tournaments as rank outsiders, the Matildas should take a lot of confidence out of these past two weeks, with coach Tony Gustavsson saying it will put them in good stead as preparations for the 2023 World Cup in Australia begin to ramp up.

“I said in the circle that I actually hope we’re never (going to) forget the feeling of this loss because, that feeling - we never want to be there again,” Gustavsson said.

“We need to use that as fuel to make sure we work really hard from now on to get better, so come that World Cup in 2023, we want to have the feeling we had when we played GB (Great Britain), that excitement and celebration to win.

“But I also want to add one thing, which is very, very important. There’s also a feeling of pride. I’m extremely proud of these girls - the way that they fought, the never-say-die attitude on show at this tournament, the football that we showcased.

“You can win different things. You can win trophies, and you can win the hearts of people.”

Quarter-final Olympic exit for the Opals OLYMPICS BASKETBALL

THE underwhelming Olympic campaign of Jenna O’Hea’s Opals came to a crushing end on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the USA in a 79-55 quarter-final rout.

Facing a team that has not lost a match at the Olympics since 1992, it was always going to be an uphill battle for the Australians to proceed to the semi-finals after they just scraped in to the knockout stage with a thrilling victory against Puerto Rico in their final group stage game.

With Traralgon local O’Hea elevated to the starting line-up, the Opals would unfortunately be overwhelmed for just about the entirety of proceedings, with the class and skill of the star studded American line up indicating why they are hot favourites to claim the gold medal.

Coming into the match needing a miracle, it was an upbeat start for Australia scoring the first basket and quickly jumping to a 6-4 lead in the opening minutes.

However, from there on it would be a blood bath for Sandy Brondello’s team, as the United States proceeded to tighten the shackles defensively and go on a 15-0 run that would leave the Opals scoreless for over eight minutes and open up a sizeable 14 point lead at the first change.

In desperate need of a boost to keep the game competitive, the start of the second quarter yielded some positive signs as some smart plays by the likes of Leilani Mitchell trimmed the margin back to single digits.

For all of Australia’s good work however, they just could not stop the firepower of the USA, with the likes of Breanna Stewart and Sue Bird torching them on the offensive end as the world number one again hit their groove and put together another impressive run to see the margin balloon north of 20 by half-time.

With the result all but decided, fans back home were keen to see a bit of resolve from the Opals as they came out for the second half with a heightened defensive intensity.

Unfortunately they could not transfer that to any scoreboard pressure, with the American defence causing a host of turnovers and allowing them to extend the margin to 29 at the final change.

Heading into the last quarter with nothing left to play for but pride, the Opals would show their determination by playing the game out hard and winning the final term 16-11 to trim the final margin to 24.

Mitchell would be the shining light for the Opals, battling hard to score 14 points and dish off six assists, while Cayla George also gave her all with 11 points and six rebounds.

An Olympic campaign shrouded with controversy following the late omission of star centre Elizabeth Cambage, the Opals never got going in Tokyo with veteran Mitchell saying the outside noise costed them in the end.

“We didn’t have a good preparation,” Mitchell said.

“Just with the drama and things that were happening leading into it and obviously Liz, who is arguably the best post player in the world, all of a sudden she’s not here with us where we’ve built our system around her.

“Obviously it was a lot of adjusting we had to make in a few days, and it didn’t really work out for us.”
