TRARALGON Show organisers are forging ahead with plans to hold this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event in early December despite news that the Royal Melbourne Show was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Traralgon and District Agricultural Show committee member Caitlin Grigsby said they had applied with Victorian Agricultural Shows to hold the event on December 4-5, after which it would need council approval to secure the dates.

The Traralgon Show was cancelled in the past two years and was rained out in 2017.

The committee had canned the show in 2018 due to structural damage to the pavilion, and had put it on ice last year to reinvigorate the event with sponsorship and further building renovations.

Ms Grigsby said committee members were hoping current lockdowns would be lifted by December for the 130th Traralgon Show to proceed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more important than ever for this show to go ahead, this is our 130th show

and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really significant. We are still working our backsides off and hope it happens, but we still donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know,â&#x20AC;? Ms Grigsby told The Express. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s incredibly sad about the Royal Melbourne Show, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been hard for them because of the hand theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been dealt with, and we may face the same situation, who knows where we will be in November, December?â&#x20AC;?

Ms Grigsby said show organisers had applied for a $200,000 federal government grant to renovate the arts and

crafts pavilion and were working with local community groups and businesses.

Last year, the show society secured $20,000 in sponsorship for pavilion repairs, and earlier this year Gippsland Ranges Roller Derby unveiled a revamped room at the showgrounds courtesy of a $100,000 Latrobe Valley Authority grant. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve started the legwork for funding, even if we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get this grant, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s our intention to proceed with the show,â&#x20AC;? Ms Grigsby said.

No new cases in the Valley

THERE has been no change to the Latrobe Valleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s total of coronavirus cases, which remains steady at seven.

The total number of COVID-19 cases across the state was at 1384 as of 12pm on Sunday.

To date, 18 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria.

The total number of cases is made up of 720 men and 664 women, with people aged from babies to their early nineties.

There are 142 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Victoria that may have been acquired through community transmission.

Currently 12 people are in hospital, including seven patients in intensive care.

A total of 1,300 people have recovered.

Fund to help students FEDERATION University Australia has welcomed the state governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s announcement of a new $45 million hardship fund for international students impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are currently around 2000 international students studying at the universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ballarat, Brisbane, Berwick and Gippsland campuses.

Federation University established student financial assistance schemes for domestic and international university students at our campuses and partner institutions who have been impacted by the pandemic, and is preparing to release a financial assistance scheme for TAFE students.

Federation has received more than 2100 requests for financial assistance through its scheme for domestic and international students and has already provided around $1.3 million in financial assistance to help students continue their studies during the pandemic. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We know many of our students have lost casual and part-time work as a result of the pandemic, and are struggling during these difficult times,â&#x20AC;? vice-chancellor and president, Professor Helen Bartlett said.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our focus is on ensuring our students have both the financial and emotional support they need to get through this pandemic so they can continue their studies and their career dreams.

More than 138,000 tests have been undertaken.

Six of the new cases of COVID-19 were in workers at a Melbourne meat processing facility, taking the total number of cases in this cluster to 15. â&#x20AC;&#x153;(The) increase in cases illustrates once again that while we have been flattening the curve, our battle against COVID-19 is far from over,â&#x20AC;? Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Victorians have done a remarkable job so far sticking to the coronavirus restrictions and staying at home has saved lives. But now is not the time for complacency.â&#x20AC;?

Three of todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new cases stem from testing in the community as part of a

state government blitz that will help inform decisions about potentially slowly lifting restrictions ahead of the State of Emergency being reviewed on May 11. These cases are under further investigation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Up to 100,000 Victorians will be tested for coronavirus during these two weeks as part of a major testing blitz across the state,â&#x20AC;? Prof Sutton said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve more than doubled the number of daily tests weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re conducting since the introduction of this blitz and these results will be reflected in coming days. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The main aim of this increase in testing is to improve access and actively search for cases, allowing us to gain a better picture of this virus and make informed decisions for Victoria.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;People with common symptoms of coronavirus including fever, chills, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose or loss of sense of smell â&#x20AC;&#x201C; however mild â&#x20AC;&#x201C; are encouraged to get tested.â&#x20AC;?

There are only four reasons for Victorians to leave their home: food and supplies, medical care and care giving, exercise, and work or education.

It comes as a two-phase plan for the return of community sport has been floated by the federal government.

The advice from the Australian Institute of Sport says how different sports and recreation activities can start, but the decisions on when that happens rest with the state government.

DOREVITCH Pathology started offering a drive-through testing service for COVID-19 at its clinic within the Latrobe Regional Hospital precinct on Friday.

Dorevitch business manager for Traralgon and South Gippsland area Glenda Shrimpton said the move was in response to the state governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s aim to â&#x20AC;&#x153;test as many community members as possible (for coronavirus) over the coming weekâ&#x20AC;?.

Ms Shrimpton said the drive-through testing service was open from 9am-1pm Monday to Friday.

She said Dorevitch had two staff members stationed to meet patients. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We will add more staff when needed,â&#x20AC;? she told The Express.

Ms Shrimpton said patients must have a signed request slip from a medical practitioner to be able to access the service, the only one of its kind in Latrobe Valley at the moment.

Once they have the request, patients can come to the location and stay in their car.

They donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to call for an appointment.

Ms Shrimpton said a staff member would get the paperwork and another take the swab from the patient. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We will come to them,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Ms Shrimpton said the service is bulkbilled through Medicare.

Ms Shrimpton said Dorevitch could send the results to patients if requested, however, they may be some delays â&#x20AC;&#x153;as (the state) government has increased testing.â&#x20AC;?

THE Latrobe Health Assembly, in partnership with the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services and the Latrobe Health Advocate, have produced a community resource booklet which has been delivered in hard copy to every household, nearly 31,000, in Latrobe City.

The drive for this initiative came from the view that as a community we are experiencing a time of uncertainty as we face the challenges of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak.

These challenges are diverse and are changing the way we live, work and act.

Latrobe Health Assembly chair Tanya Rong acknowledged that this can be a time of fear, anxiety and worry, however it is important to know that you are not alone.

It is why the Latrobe Health

Assembly is working alongside government, as well as health services, to provide support and care for the Latrobe Valley community.

Ms Rong said a key focus within the Latrobe Health Innovation Zone is to promote a caring, resilient Latrobe Valley community and said she has seen wonderful examples of community kindness in the form of; food swaps; delivery of groceries; checking on elderly neighbours; and a range of social catch ups on virtual platforms.

Ms Rong said that the amount and volume of information coming from many different sources can be confusing and difficult to understand.

This partnership has produced the community resource booklet to assist the community with accessing the services or

assistance that they need. The Assembly has recognised that there is a lot of change at the moment, and that these changes are moving at a fast pace.

The document will also be uploaded onto the Latrobe Health Assembly website at www.healthassembly.org.au and updated regularly to ensure its currency.

Lions show support for teammate Tajh

ON a day that would have marked the start of the 2020 season in the Gippsland Football Netball League, the Moe FNC community embarked on a campaign of a different kind.

Instead of running through the banner on April 4,The Lions’ thirds ran a buzzer through their hair and shaved off their locks in a show of solidarity for player Tajh Eden.

Tajh, 16, was dealt a cruel blow when he was diagnosed with sarcoma of the elbow in November last year.

He has been travelling to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne every fortnight for six days to undergo intensive chemotherapy and hydration.

“Today was supposed to be round one for us in football, and as a team we were going to shave our heads for Tajh Eden,” coach Steven Rock said.

“The boys wanted to honour him and do something for Tajh and his family. Tajh is an amazing young man and a very talented footballer.”

Six weeks ago a marathon 12-hour surgery to remove the tumour in Tajh’s elbow and replace the section of bone with his fibular and a steel rod was a huge success.

And, with 10 rounds of chemotherapy down and four to go, Tajh said he was “feeling pretty good” on the home stretch of what has been a trying eight months.

“I had a scan and got some really good news that the tumour was not active anymore, so after that we started seeing the surgeon and it was then that I had surgery,” he said.

“It was a bit daunting at first, being told I’d have to be in a wheelchair, but the surgeons were really happy with how it went and I actually ended up just in a moon boot and arm cast.”

The Mirboo North resident, who was also part of the Gippsland Power under-16 squad last year, has been blown away by the show of support from the Moe FNC community.

“They’ve been absolutely amazing. They’ve just been so good to me, it’s been a bit hard obviously not being able to see them with all the coronavirus stuff going on,” Tajh said.

“Then I’ve sort of been in hospital every two weeks, so it’s been extra difficult, but the messages from them, the calls ... it’s been amazing.

“Dad told me they were going to shave their heads before round one and all run out with shaved heads and it was actually a bit

of a surprise, and then they organised the fundraiser as well which was just amazing.

“I would’ve never expected it but there’s definitely a couple of rough scones getting around at the moment.”

The head shave Go Fund Me page has so far raised more than $1500 for Tajh and his family to help cover the costs of travel and treatment.

Another, set up by friend Ned Hanily earlier in the year, is sitting at more than $21,000.

“I jumped into bed on New Year’s Eve and got a message from Ned and he said he’d raised $750 from he and some mates shaving heads,” Tajh said.

“He said he had another surprise for me and off his own bat started the page, and I couldn’t believe the amount of money being put in.

“I felt a bit bad really, so did mum and dad ... I didn’t really want to take the money from people but it was definitely overwhelming.”

ANNOUNCED Public Interest News Gathering (PING) program could potentially hand funds allocated to small and regional publishers to the large and powerful commercial television and radio networks and media conglomerates such as News Corp.

Country Press Australia, on behalf its 140 independent regional and local newspaper members,has been in discussions with the Federal Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts, Paul Fletcher, to prevent the allocation guidelines for the PING program producing unintended outcomes.

The Regional and Small Publishers Innovation Fund was established in 2018 specifically to counter the media reform laws that favored the large public companies and help sustain diverse media in Australia.

The ACMA site itself states “The Innovation Fund is a threeyear, $48 million grant program, which began in 2018. It is part of the Australian Government’s $60 million Regional and Small Publishers Jobs and Innovation package.”

It has become clear that regional and small publishers could be sacrificed to the more powerful voices of the commercial television and radio networks and media conglomerates such as News Corporation unless careful consideration is given to the funding framework.

It is unfortunate that the conglomerates seem to have the ear of government, yet regional and small publishers have the ears of 140 communities across Australia in the case of CPA, that they continue to serve.

That News Corp could now share in a funding program specifically targeted to regional and

small publishers, concocted to push through changes to Media Ownership rules of massive benefit to them and other media conglomerates at the expense of regional and small publishers, will only be to the detriment of society and the varied media voices in this country.

The original turnover cap of $30 million must be maintained to ensure the continued integrity of the fund.

The primary purpose of the Regional and Small Publishers Jobs and Innovation Program, the “production of public interest journalism as the primary purpose” of a recipient must be retained as part of the funding criteria.

The funding criteria must include a clear correlation to the direct resources applied by entities to the original production of locally generated public interest journalism in regional and local communities.

Petrol prices dropping

LATROBE Valley motorists are enjoying some price relief at the petrol bowser.

With coronavirus restrictions forcing a reduction in demand for fuel around the globe, prices have plummeted to lows not seen this century.

Prices in the Valley for unleaded petrol are hovering between 89.9c and 103.9c per litre.

That figure has dropped between 20c and 30c a litre during the past month with weekly average international crude oil prices decreasing by about US$50 per barrel since the start of the year.

RACV senior vehicle engineer Nicholas Platt said the power was in the hands of motorists when fuelling up.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;We recommend motorists use RACVâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s online fuel price comparison tool to find the cheapest fuel locally,â&#x20AC;? Mr Platt said.

Prices across the Valley are higher than Melbourne where the average unleaded retail price as of May 3 was 90.9c per litre, although some outlets have prices as low as 79.9c per litre.

But while most motorists are enjoying the advantage of current prices, Mr Platt said the news was not as good for diesel vehicle drivers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The wholesale price of ULP fuel is currently 97 cents, and the average price of a litre of unleaded petrol is around $1.28, but diesel prices remain largely unchanged at an average of $1.39,â&#x20AC;? Mr Platt said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no reason for this, service stations seem to be taking advantage of diesel vehicle

Health advocate launches brand new online blog

WITH social restrictions imposed in Victoria since March, Latrobe Health Advocate Jane Anderson has turned to technology to continue reaching out to community members.

Ms Anderson who was known for her unconventional ways of engaging Latrobe Valley residents including riding buses to chat, has recently launched a blog to discuss what she has been hearing from people across the community in connection to the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

“I’ve been hearing from people how COVID-19 is impacting them and then I provide this information to the (Victorian) Health Minister and the Chief Health Officer,” she said.

“There are concerns about mental health around how they’re dealing with anxiety, with the changes they have to make with work and with being home and not being connected to people socially.”

She said there were also concerns about people who had no access to technology and who were feeling isolated.

In her most recent blog, Ms Anderson talked about a local community group expressing that they were “feeling disjointed” because half of their members do not have access to online technology and that they felt isolated “without their usual social interactions”.

Ms Anderson said access to technology was a significant issue at present because people experiencing this barrier may be in a very disadvantageous situation.

She said she has been talking to people on the phone about their health concerns and even communicating via social media to continue engaging the community.

“We’re continuing with our work but we’ve adjusted it because of COVID19,” she said.

Frosty days as wintry blast strikes

Cold: Franklin Street in Traralgon on Friday, the coldest day seen in the Latrobe Valley this year.

AN EARLY taste of winter arrived in the Latrobe Valley late last week as the region shivered through its coldest day of the year so far.

On Friday, the mercury briefly climbed into double figures as the top hit 11.1 degrees.

If you went out about 1.30pm and thought it was a touch fresh, you were right with the apparent temperature across the region minus 1.3 degrees.

When it came to the bitterly cold stakes, Saturday was not a whole lot better, reaching 11.8 degrees.

A top wind gust of 69km/h was recorded on Saturday at 2.28pm.

Torrential, almost tropical-like rain lashed the region on Friday night and

the early hours of Saturday morning.

The Bureau of Meteorology recorded 40.4mm in the 24 hours up to 9am, exceeding the year’s previous best across the same period of 33.8mm only two days earlier.

A severe weather warning for damaging winds was issued for a number of regions, including the Latrobe Valley was issued on Friday afternoon, as well as a Flood Watch for the Latrobe River and Traralgon Creek.

That was upgraded to a Minor Flood Warning on Saturday as the Moe River at Darnum exceeded the minor flood level on Saturday morning, peaking around 3.81m on Saturday.

Minor flooding occurred along the Latrobe River at Thoms Bridge in West Gippsland, with the river at 4.4m

at 2.30pm on Sunday. The BOM said minor flooding was expected along the river downstream of Traralgon with the Latrobe River 3.71m at 2.30pm on Sunday.

The strong wintry blast was a result of a very large and low cold front that made its way across south-eastern Australia according to BOM senior forecaster Tom Delamotte.

“It was very, very chilly … a really strong wintry outbreak,” he said.

Mount Baw Baw received a good coverage of snow with 22cm arriving on Friday and 26cm on Saturday as temperatures plunged into the minuses.

The good news is the forecast is much brighter for the coming days.

Tomorrow will see a top of 18 degrees, with Thursday predicted to hit 21.

Police pay respects to fallen colleagues

POLICE stations across the state have paused to honour the four Victoria Police officers who died in a tragic road accident in Melbourne last month.

Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Constable Glen Humphris, Senior Constable Kevin King and Constable Josh Prestney died when a truck hit them on Wednesday, April 22.

Because of social distancing rules funerals for the officers have been small and private.

Senior Constable Lynette Taylor’s funeral was held on Thursday, with funerals for Constable Humphris and Senior Constable on Friday and Constable Prestney’s funeral will be held today.

Moe Acting Senior Sergeant Darren Eldridge said the community has given the station a huge amount of support.

“We have put a police car in the driveway of the station with lights going, a guard of honour and a minute silence on Thursday and Friday,” he said.

“It is very humbling to be able to honour them in this small way, although it is disappointing that we are not able

Ryan reflects on his own Major adventure

MAJOR Ryan Pearce spent his 21st birthday deployed in Iraq, after graduating from Royal Military College, Duntroon just two years earlier.

He was accepted into the renowned Australian Army officer training establishment shortly after finishing high school at Traralgon Secondary College in 2002.

Maj Pearce said he decided to enrol so he could do something a bit exciting and different.

“I liked the idea of being able to be in a leadership position and the army provided me an opportunity to expand my horizons, and work in completely different places around the world,” he told The Express.

“I realised in 2017 that it was the first time in my career I had spent more than a year in one position... I definitely managed to achieve the ever-changing career that I wanted.”

Maj Pearce said the age of students at Duntroon was varied when he studied there.

“I was the youngest in my class because I was 17, the oldest person in my class would have been 38, it was a combination of people who had left high school and those who already

had careers in army and then changed from army to being an officer,” he said.

When Maj Pearce graduated from Duntroon he was allocated for the Royal Australian Army Core in Puckapunyal where he trained to be a Cavalry Officer for the Light Horse Regiment.

“Before I even got to the Light Horse Regiment I was told I would be deployed to Iraq, it was very exciting and happened very quickly,” Maj Pearce said.

“There has been a few periods in my career where I have had to learn a lot very quickly and that was a really interesting experience.”

Maj Pearce said he “just happened to join at a time when the army was committed to working in the Middle East” and went on a second tour of Iraq in 2015 and Afghanistan in 2010.

“I had two weeks notice that I would be deployed to Afghanistan for seven months ... there I had to learn very quickly where I could be of benefit and I had a great time,” Maj Pearce said.

“I think it was a bit hard on my current wife, after that tour I came straight home and proposed to her.

“Then at the end of 2015 I was

asked if I wanted to go and be the staff officer for the famous 101st Airborne Division for the American army, being there and working for an American-led headquarters was absolutely fascinating.”

Maj Pearce said one of the highlights of his career was being chosen to speak at the centenary of the Battle of Amiens in August 2018.

“I was able to go over to Amiens and speak alongside esteemed soldiers, (former UK prime minister) Theresa May and representatives from the German and French governments, which was incredible,” he said.

Maj Pearce said he had taken many interesting opportunities during his career.

“I love that in the army you do a lot of different things - I have instructed trainees, I have been an operations manager, I studied a masters in capability management and subsequently studied a master of project management,” he said.

Maj Pearce is currently the officer commanding capability implementation team for the Land 400 Phase 2 and is excited to see where else his career will take him next.

Director Craig Shallard said the experience has been a whirlwind, but the employees and families who are involved in the centre are committed to high-quality, personalised care. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It has been a really quick turnaround since we had the idea in September and opened at the end of February,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even looking at doing something like this, it just kind of fell into our lap.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Shallard has two children with autism spectrum disorder and said he â&#x20AC;&#x153;wants to treat everyone how (he) would like (his) own children to be treatedâ&#x20AC;? at the centre. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have kept it small on purpose, at our expense, but that way the centre is all about community, for example we made sure to buy our bus locally,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Three of our participants are in wheelchairs so parents expressed to us that it was important that we had means of transport for them and that is what we did. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Valley Motor Group have been sensational with helping us secure a bus - itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about building those community relationships, in smaller towns itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s paramount.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Shallardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s daughter Eliza is the Foxy House operations manager and said the centre filled a gap they saw in the local market. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is a lack of services out here that are providing that boutique service for people because it is really hard to run a small centre,â&#x20AC;? Ms Shallard said.

Coming into the industry all those years ago this is the kind of thing that you dream of doing,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Day-to-day activities are based on what our participants want to do, but at the moment our activities have been very limited due to coronavirus. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Participants donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t run rings around us, but it is their NDIS package and they should use it they way that they want.â&#x20AC;?

AS with most events recently, this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Royal Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital Good Friday Appeal took on a different shape.

But despite the restrictions and coronavirus lockdown, the Moe RCH Good Friday Appeal still generated a healthy kitty of funding for a worthy cause.

Coordinator Sue Bechaz said the outcome of this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s appeal was a credit to the Moe and Newborough communities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thanks to all the fantastic people of Moe and Newborough for their wonderful generosity in donating to this years appeal,â&#x20AC;? Ms Bechaz said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was of course much lower than previous years as we were unable to do any tin rattling on Good Friday, which devastated our local CFAs who were unable to collect. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have fantastic support from Moe, Newborough and Westbury CFAs who collect for us every year, as well as all the local businesses who support the appeal by having tins in their premises throughout the year.â&#x20AC;?

Ms Bechaz said the fundraising total was testament to the band of hard-working volunteers who navigated unprecedented terrain in their efforts this year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re still very proud of what we raised, all things considered,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had a high tea organised for next weekend and were going to do bogan bingo, but everything has been put on hold or cancelled. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Usually on tin rattling weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll bring in about $30,000, but that just didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t happen this year, and Easter raffle which we usually sell tickets at Woolies for. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Even the virtual tin rattling, a lot of people still donated, but hoepfully weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re back bigger and better next year once everythingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s back to normal.â&#x20AC;?

COVID-19 sees the Melbourne show cancelled

THIS yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Royal Melbourne Show has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 social distancing measures and mass gathering restrictions in place.

The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria canned the annual September event in the best interests of public health, making it the third time it had been cancelled in the showâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 165-year history.

The show was cancelled in 1915 and during World War II when the showgrounds were requisitioned for the war effort.

Instead, the RASV is exploring alternatives to present elements of the show online in a virtual experience, along with creating new events to support food and agricultural producers.

RASV chief executive Brad Jenkins said the organisation was very disappointed to make this announcement but ensuring the health and safety of the community was paramount.

Mr Jenkins said they needed to make a decision for the sponsors, exhibitors and competitors who spend months preparing for the show. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We also rely on hundreds of volunteers including committees, judges, stewards and more, who give their time so generously each year for the Royal Melbourne Show, many of whom take annual leave or time away from their farm,â&#x20AC;? Mr Jenkins said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are fortunate to have an incredibly passionate and supportive community involved in the Royal Melbourne Show each year and during these uncertain times we wanted to give everyone as much notice as possible.â&#x20AC;?

New ways of engaging Zoom is proving a winner for Strzelecki Bushwalking Club

there were those that have found it difficult.

“For some families, particularly those with very young children or with significant disabilities, the children are not able to actively participate in telehealth,” she said.

“In these situations I am offering parent coaching and supporting families to implement therapy in the home environment. Telehealth has definitely encouraged therapists to challenge themselves in providing therapy in new and different ways.”

She said a positive impact was that families who live remotely no longer need to make the long drive to their appointments.

Mrs Di Dio plans to continue offering telehealth service to clients unable to attend their appointments at the clinic.

“Being able to provide telehealth into the future will

support families that in the past have had to cancel appointments due to illness in the family ( for example an unwell sibling) or no access to transport on the day of the appointment,” she said.

Mrs Di Dio told The Express the connection she makes with her young clients were not the same compared to face-to-face appointments.

“So much of what I do with the younger children is through play.

Telehealth makes this tricky,” she said.

Danielle Rogers, whose two children see Mrs Di Dio, said it was hard for her kids, who were both in the spectrum, to initially adapt to telehealth.

“They’re not enjoying the new normal but they’ve really adapted. I don’t think we will be where we are (in our journey) without Kara’s input, she offers our family so much advice and support.” Ms Rogers said.

STRZELECKI Bushwalking Club has responded to the current restrictions for meetings and gatherings by including Zoom video conferencing in their communications.

The April SBWC committee meeting was held successfully via Zoom conferencing.

As a result it was decided to invite all members and guests to join in the May club meeting using Zoom.

This will be held on Wednesday, May 13 at 7.30pm and will include a recent travel adventure presentation.

Members and guests who are interested in being part of the May meeting are encouraged to register on the SBWC Facebook page or by contacting publicity@sbwc.org.au.

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea with a twist CANCER Council Victoria is encouraging the local community to connect online over a cuppa for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea in support of those affected by cancer.

The official date is May 28, but participants can host a morning tea and raise funds anytime in May or June.

Cancer Council Victoria head of fundraising and communications Lisa Kastaniotis said it isn’t the time to be gathering together, but there are ways participants can keep physical distance and still make a difference to those impacted by cancer.

“We know cancer can present many physical and emotional challenges to patients, including a feeling of isolation. COVID-19 is especially difficult for Australians undergoing cancer treatment, cancer survivors and their families and friends,” she said.

“Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is a great opportunity to get innovative and find new ways to ‘come together’ as a community even though we’re apart. It could be a virtual morning tea with family, friends or colleagues online, a cuppa with those in your household or you could even raise a mug to your neighbour across the street.”

LATROBE Valley-based allied health professionals have been adjusting to new ways of engaging young clients during the coronavirus crisis.

Traralgon speech pathologist Kara Di Dio had been excited about the prospect of opening her new clinic when the restrictions were first imposed.

‘In March I took on a lease for a new clinic with the intention of growing my speech pathology business to meet the growing speech pathology demands in our local area. Unfortunately COVID-19 hit just before the new clinic doors officially opened,” Mrs Di Dio said.

Mrs Di Dio, who finished post graduate studies in autism and has a raft of other qualifications, was hoping to hire other speech pathology professionals in the new clinic as local families experience a long waiting list.

However, when restrictions were imposed, allied health professionals like other essential services, were thrust into doing their practice via telehealth.

As Victorian schools were also closed, Mrs Di Dio, who has three young children to home school, found the situation rather challenging.

She works with young children aged between 2-15 years and a large number of her caseload involves clients with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder.

“I also work with Down syndrome, developmental delays, cleft palates, stuttering, literacy concerns, feeding challenges, articulation, fluency (stuttering) and other genetic chromosomal disorders,” she said.

Quantum puts out the call for foster carers

Quantum Support Services is a not-for-profit service that has been operating in the Gippsland region for more than 30 years and has put out the call for foster carers.

Quantum’s Children and Youth Services stream manager Mitchell Burney is concerned about a limited number of placement options that present in the region for children entering the care system.

“Across Gippsland there is a growing need for more foster carers.

Quantum are in urgent need to find homes on a daily basis for children and young people. The greatest barrier to providing homes for children/ young people in foster care is a shortage of carers,” Mr Burney said.

“Quantum’s Foster Care Program supports children and young people who are unable to live at the family home due to significant harm. Our carers and our program provides a safe and nurturing home for these

children/young people that promotes safety, stability and healthy development.”

Foster carers provide stable, safe and caring environments for children and young people who otherwise are unable to live with parents or family and have often experienced complex developmental trauma.

AS the state of emergency continues Latrobe City Mayor Dan Clancey is reminding pet owners of their responsibilities when walking their pets.

With restrictions in place, an increasing number of dog walkers are using Latrobe City parks, gardens and footpaths.

Cr Clancey said walkers must have their dogs on a lead at all times and carry a bag to collect dog droppings.

“Remember, you need to keep your animal secure - on a lead if you are walking, or in a fenced yard at your property. You should have basic control over your pet when out and about,” he said.

“Unfortunately, we are also seeing a lot more dog litter on pavements

and in parks. Please remember to carry a bag with you to clean up after your pet.

“Civic pride relies on all of us doing our bit to keep our CBDs, local neighbourhoods and reserves clean and tidy. We want you to be outside enjoying some fresh air with your pet on a daily walk, but equally, we want everyone else to be able to enjoy a safe and hygienic experience.

“Community safety is paramount.

We simply cannot allow animals to wander at large in our neighbourhoods, particularly as we are all being encouraged to get outside and exercise more during these pandemic restrictions.”

THE volunteer committee which manages the picturesque Edward Hunter Heritage Bush Reserve in Moe are running a photograph and artwork competition.

The competition is open to primary and secondary school students in Moe and Newborough.

Winning entries will be used to create a 2021 calendar featuring the reserve and highlighting its unique conservation value.

An open and heartfelt letter to the Latrobe Valley community from Dave Hastie - General Manager of Latrobe Valley Funeral Services

“We can still have a funeral service; we are just doing things differently” I don’t need to tell you that we are living in very stressful times, not only has Covid-19 impacted on how we live but also on how we deal with death. Not only are people in our community struggling with the impact of the Corona Virus on their social, family and financial situations but also with the grief of losing a loved one.

I am writing this letter to reassure the community and every family that has lost a loved one that we will do everything possible to ensure that we can still provide a dignified and meaningful funeral service, in a safe and professional manner.

We are obliged to follow the Government Guidelines in regard to funerals; the current restrictions to date limit the number of people attending a funeral to 10 people; as well as the new social distancing practices.

These measures are distressing for all of us. However, we can and are still holding funeral services – just differently, on a much smaller scale.

Many of the families we have been dealing with are opting for a private family service. We can still have a funeral service; we are just doing things differently.

It is fortunate that at our 3 chapels spread across the Latrobe Valley we can do this, whether it be for a cremation service or for a burial. At our 3 chapels are now able to livestream all services, as well as record onto DVD’s. Our tribute section on our website is also a popular medium now for friends and families to leave a message. We are changing our website to include a photo of the deceased if the family so wish for that to happen.

Families can choose to arrange a funeral over the phone or at one of our chapels. As there are restrictions in place regarding social gatherings this means that only one person can be at the arrangement. We can help by making a conference call to include other family members.

On a more personal note, this is an adjustment for all of us – some of our staff have been serving the local community for many years, some have preexisting health issues, some have elderly parents isolated at home, some have family members who have already lost their jobs. We are just like you. We are all struggling to come to terms with what is occurring not just in Australia but overseas as well.

We have never experienced anything like this, and every day is bringing different challenges. I just want to reassure you that we will continue to serve our community to the best of our ability.

Looking back through the archives at memorable sporƟng moments in the Latrobe Valley.

When Tim became a bronzed Aussie

SPAIN was the scene of the Summer Olympics for the first time when Barcelona played host in 1992.

From the moment a flaming arrow ignited the Olympic cauldron, there was the feeling that these Olympics would be special.

It marked the return of South Africa from the wilderness, but also the dissolving of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia.

Countries such as Croatia and Slovenia made their Olympic debuts, while athletes from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania competed under their own country’s flag for the first time since 1936.

The 1992 Olympics were notable due to the presence of the ‘Dream Team’ from the United States, a collection of stars that the Milky Way would have envied.

It would also be a memorable one for the Latrobe Valley as a Thorpdale teenager made a giant impact on the grandest stage of them all.

Tim Forsyth was 17 days short of his 19th birthday when the high jump final took place at the Olympic Stadium on August 2, 1992.

Despite his youth, Forsyth, who stood 1.99cm had rich international experience.

He took up athletics while a student at Trafalgar High School and quickly rose through the ranks, winning silver at the World Junior Championships in Bulgaria.

By 1992, Forsyth was fully-fledged on the senior stage and brought good form into the event, with a pair of important victories in Europe.

The Latrobe Valley had caught Olympic fever as The Express tapped into on Tuesday, July 28, 1992.

Patriotism is alive and well in Giles Arcade, Trafalgar, which has been decked out in green and gold in honour of the Olympic Games and Thorpdale’s favourite son Tim Forsyth.

The inclusion of the talented high jumper in this year’s Australian squad spurred shopkeepers on to fill the mall with green and gold balloons and wattle, Olympic pictures and the Aussie flag.

Taking pride of place in the middle of the display is a high jump on which Tim’s world and Australian records have been marked.

In the lead-up to the games, Tim cleared 2.34 metres to win gold in

Oslo and London and set a new Australian record.

According to hairdresser Jodie Brown, the lanky 18-year-old and his family are all well-known to locals who will be watching him in the high jump final on Sunday, August 2.

The high jump final was on day 10 of the Olympics and Australia had already enjoyed major success.

Warragul cyclist Kathy Watt won the women’s individual road race, Kieren Perkins sealed gold in the men’s 1500m freestyle and we dominated the equestrian.

Matt Ryan rode Kibah Tic Toc, bred in the small New England town of Carroll, to individual glory, while Ryan, Gillian Rolton and Andrew Hoy won the teams competition.

August 2 would be memorable as the day the Awesome Foursome announced themselves to the world and the day where the Valley could claim our own Bronzed Aussie.

The events were captured on page 3 of The Express, Tuesday, August 4, 1992.

Trafalgar High School students were on the edge of their seats on Monday morning as 18-year-old Thorpdale high jumper Tim Forsyth, strode in for his third and final attempt to clear 2.37 m and win an Olympic medal.

Unfortunately the height proved too great and he clipped the bear, relegating him to fourth place.

However, disappointment soon turned to euphoria when a scoring error was detected, which promoted Tim to third place, securing yet another bronze for Australia.

And the news brought a huge cheer from Trafalgar High students when they watched the replay later at school.

Tim’s grandmother, May Forsyth of Thorpdale, said she was extremely proud of her grandson’s performance and looking forward to his return on August 13.

“Tim’s parents, Jim and Jan, phoned us this morning from Barcelona and were almost speechless, they were that excited,” Mrs Forsyth said.

“All of Thorpdale is really excited, he has had such a lot of support from the community.

According to Mrs Forsyth, Tim felt relaxed going into the final in contrast to the heats.

“I think he was more nervous during the heats,” she added.

In the final, Tim equalled his Australian record of 2.34 metres, set in Adelaide last month, and tied for bronze with Hollace Conway (US) and Arthur Partyka (Poland).

Cuban Javier Sotomayor took the gold with a jump of 2.44 metres, while Swede Patrik Sjoberg won the silver medal.

Forsyth had become the first Australian to win an Olympic medal in high jump for 36 years since Chilla Porter won silver at the 1956 Games in Melbourne.

John Winter, who won gold at the 1948 London Olympics, was the only other Australian to medal.

It speaks volumes of the significance of Forsyth’s feat in Barcelona that no Australian since has medalled in high jump.

His return to Thorpdale after the Olympics was covered by The Express in a front page story on Friday, August 14, 1992.

A tired, but elated Tim Forsyth arrived home in Thorpdale yesterday to cheers from the tiny township, eager to embrace its first Olympic hero.

Tim’s early morning arrival did not deter about 60 Thorpdale residents, who lined the Forsyth driveway with green and gold streamers and balloons, in appreciation of the young athlete.

Despite being worn out from a 36-hour long flight, Tim still managed to stay awake long enough to proudly show off his medal and recount a few tales of the thrills and highlights of the major part he played in the Olympic Games.

According to Tim, the past two months have proved as hectic as they have been exciting.

As well as competing at the Olympics, he spent six weeks on a ‘grand prix’ circuit - travelling to different European cities to compete in top class high jumping events.

Tim was joined in Barcelona by his parents, Jan and Jim, who witnessed their 18-year-old son achieve third best in one of the most closely contested high jump events in Olympic history.

For Tim, the rest of the Barcelona trip proved equally exciting.

The closing ceremony, staying at the Olympic Village with all the other athletes and seeing the sights of Spain were all ‘great experiences’.

Tim’s return home, however, will be brief.

He will only have a couple of days to recuperate (including attending a town party in his honour this weekend) before training resumes for the World Juniors in Seoul in six weeks.

Forsyth finished second in South Korea and would go onto enjoy a successful career in the sport.

In 1994, he won gold with a 2.32m jump at the Commonwealth Games in Canada.

He competed in his second Olympics at Atlanta in 1996, finishing seventh and landed bronze at the World Championships in Athens the next year.

Five months earlier, Forsyth jumped 2.36m at the Melbourne Track Classic to break his own Australian record.

It is a mark that still remains today although it has been equalled

by Brandon Starc.

Forsyth sealed another bronze in the 1998 Commonwealth Games at Kuala Lumpur and qualified for his third Olympics at Sydney 2000.

He jumped 2.24m, but missed out on a spot in the final.

These days Forsyth lives on the Mornington Peninsula and works in the education sector.

Stay connected and be a part of great challenge

VICTORIAN country football and netball teams are encouraged to stay connected during the COVID-19 crisis through the launch of #CountryClubChallenge.

The #CountryClubChallenge is a private community page made up of all AFL Victoria Country and Netball Victoria teams for a competition that sets out to promote interaction between the clubs.

WorkSafe Victoria, a partner of AFL Vic Country since 2002 and the Country Netball League since 2005, has backed clubs to encourage player and fan engagement during the current suspension period of play. #CountryClubChallenge brings out the competitive spirit in clubs and communities, by encouraging them to achieve several social interactions across five key pillars - skills sessions, fitness, community support, supporting your club and elite talent

integration. St Kilda forward and #CountryClubChallenge supporter Tim Membrey, who hails from Traralgon Football Netball Club, hoped all country clubs would get involved in the challenge.

“Whether you’re running out for the Saints in the AFL or on the weekend with your mates - we play sport because we love it,” he said.

“I’m taking part in the challenge - I hope we can bring players, clubs and fans together.

“Now more than ever do we need to stick together.”

Membrey will be taking part in the challenge and uploaded his videos to the private Facebook page.

Weekly surprise and delight prizes, and an overall prize are up for grabs.

“It’s important for all of our teams and clubs to remain connected during this time, and this initiative will help build morale

across the board. “Nothing like some healthy competition to bring everyone together and we appreciate WorkSafe’s support in doing this,”AFL Victoria spokesperson Stephen O’Donohue said.

Netball Victoria’s general manager of netball participation Melanie Taylor encouraged netballers throughout the Latrobe Valley to have a crack at the competition.

“Country clubs are the lifeblood of their communities,” Ms Taylor said.

“It’s great that we can stick together and have some fun.

We’re glad to partner with AFL Victoria and WorkSafe Victoria on the challenge.”

The competition started on April 30 and will run until Sunday, June 28.

Following the close of the competition, the grand prize winner will be announced on the Monday.

Home can hold court

KIDS across Australia are set to move more, improve their skills and come up with their own creative tennis games with the launch of HomeCourtTennis, a new initiative to assist teachers and coaches with keeping kids active while at home.

Part one of the initiative, Games-making, will be introduced across the country this week via a series of videos for teachers and coaches. The content will support teachers in their physical education classes as they shift to distance learning, while coaches will use the material to remain connected to their players.

Games-making is designed to encourage students to create their own tennis games using various equipment from around their home environment, whether that is their lounge room, kitchen, bedroom, backyard, garage or driveway.

Tennis Australia, Flinders University and The Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER) recently produced a peer reviewed research paper exploring this concept of games-making.

It revealed the opportunity for coaches and teachers to challenge players and students to problem-solve, be creative and to design their own tennis games based on their choice and ability.

“With so many kids currently at home, it’s more important than ever to keep them active, motivated and engaged,” Tennis Australia chief tennis officer Matt Dwyer said.

“HomeCourtTennis has been designed to increase children’s physical activity as well as develop a range of skills, regardless of their playing space and equipment. For instance, kids may choose to use a balloon instead of a tennis ball and position two chairs together as a net - as you will see in these videos, anywhere can be a tennis court.

“Even more importantly, Games-making is designed to play to the individual strengths of each child, emphasising what they can do, and what they want to do, rather than what they can’t do - there are no limitations and we encourage them to get creative.

“Games-making also offers the opportunity for parents and children to play together at home and enjoy tennis as a game for all generations.”

FRIDAY, May 15 looms as “D-Day” for football and netball in Gippsland, with AFL Gippsland to meet on that date to determine if a season will happen and what it will look like.

If season 2020 is given the green light, clubs are likely to have three weeks notice before matches commence.

In electronic communications circulated to clubs and leagues from AFL Gippsland regional manager Richard Black, the message of hope for some football and netball to be played in 2020 was sold.

“This is the basis of our ongoing operational and budgetary planning across a range of season start date scenarios,” the statement read.

“We are currently working with local councils and cricketing bodies to explore ground availability and season length options.”
