WILD NIGHT IN VALLEY EMERGENCY services crews were kept busy after a wild storm lashed the Latrobe Valley on Thursday night.

Strong winds, lightning, thunder and hail arrived with the cold front which tore through the region about 6pm.

The State Emergency Service (SES) responded to 19 incidents in Moe and six in Morwell, while a number of other parts of the Valley were impacted. SES operations manager Craig Hooper said it was fortunate there were no serious injuries recorded.

COMPLETION dates for the EnergyBrix demolition project have been pushed back about four to six months as crews have discovered more asbestos.

Locals can also expect to see the Morwell plant’s remaining two chimneys come down in late November.

EBAC remediation general manager Barry Dungey said the public would be notified on chimney demolition dates which would be subject to weather conditions. “We are exploring livestreaming this. We will minimise dust as much as we can, there is no asbestos in the chimneys,� Mr Dungey said. “We will be using a pullover technique, we will weaken the structure of the chimneys and pull them over with cables using excavators on site.�

Mr Dungey said crews were working on removing asbestos gaskets and separating them from the salvageable steel from the collapsed boilers. “This separation process is taking time, it’s being done under asbestos removal conditions, but it’s not a health and safety risk,

AIR pollution from the Latrobe Valley’s coal-fired power stations has been linked to 37 premature deaths a year in Gippsland, according to a new report from Greenpeace.

The estimates came from a new report, Lethal Power: How burning coal is killing people in Australia, written by air pollution experts and released by the environment group.

The report found that air pollution was responsible for 580 days of asthma symptoms among children, 33 low birth-weight babies and 37 premature deaths per year across the region.

It also found that air pollution from the Valley’s coal generators could be found hundreds of kilometres away, as far as southern New South Wales.

Comparatively, the report found that statewide there were 4376 days of asthma symptoms among children, 259 low birth weights and 205 premature deaths linked to coal-fired power stations.

Report author and environmental epidemiologist Hilary Bambrick said this was the first time the national health impacts of burning coal for electricity had been scientifically assessed.

DR HILARY BAMBRICK The study estimated emissions from coal power stations and atmospheric dispersion modelling looking at meteorological conditions and how pollution spread at surface level.

The report authors then looked at health studies to link pollution increases with health outcomes and estimated deaths attributable to burning coal.

Dr Bambrick said the “groundbreaking� report highlighted the necessity to impose tighter pollution controls on coal-fired power stations. “We hadn’t done any

modelling on air pollution from coal-fired power stations and the health burden they create, so we put the two together,� Dr Bambrick said. “We found the distance over which pollution travels. We thought it would just stay in the surrounding areas but we found it travelled hundreds of kilometres.�

The Environment Protection Authority is currently reviewing Latrobe Valley power station licences with potential for improved standards on air pollution.

However, the Australian Energy Council - which represents major generators - rejected the report as “alarmist, misleading and lacking in rigour�. “This report makes similar health claims to previous allegations from green advocates which, when peer reviewed, were found to be flawed and misleading, and not based on good science,� an AEC spokesman said. “In the case of this Greenpeace report, it has not been peer reviewed, it points to outdated data from overseas and extrapolates it to Australia today. The report also refers to Hazelwood power station, yet that plant closed in 2017.�

Mr Dungey said so far, about 10,000 tonnes of steel had left the site to be salvaged, and all the friable asbestos had been safely removed with no positive readings outside the removal barriers.

He said the project was “going well� with two of the plant’s eight boilers left standing, and expects the project to be finished by the

end of the year, with some land levelling taking place in January. “Now the manual labour intensive activities are finished, it’s mainly machine work so risks are a lot less,� he said.

Mr Dungey said the project had a good health and safety record with no significant near misses or incidents in the past 12 months, and the site was being regularly audited by the EPA and Worksafe.

POLICE are investigating after tools and equipment worth $80,000 were allegedly stolen from a Willow Grove farm last week.

Operation Hollows a success MORE than 60 people have been caught illegally collecting firewood and felling trees on public land as part of a joint operation between the Conservation Regulator and Parks Victoria.

Since Operation Hollows began in March, forest and wildlife officers have been patrolling forests, parks and reserves across the state and have reported a major increase in illegal firewood activity.

The operation is targeting the unlawful removal of commercial quantities of firewood from public land, and suppliers of illegal firewood to reduce the loss of important habitat such as hollow logs and dead trees. “The illegal removal of wood from our forests has a devastating impact on our native wildlife,� Chief Conservation regulator Kate Gavens said. “We take the removal of illegal firewood seriously and there have been several court cases this year resulting in large fines.�

Spring time rainfall set to be above the average

THE Bureau of Meteorology has released its spring outlook, showing much of Australia has a high likelihood of above average rainfall in the coming months.

The outlook also shows daytime temperatures are likely to be average to below average throughout southern Australia and warmer than average in the north.

Overnight temperatures are likely to be above average for the entire country, with the only exception being south-west Western Australia.

The Bureau’s Manager of Climate Operations Dr Andrew Watkins said the outlook was being largely driven by changes in sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific and Indian oceans.

“Most long-range forecasts analysed by the Bureau, including from our own climate model, are indicating a La Nina could develop in the spring, which typically results in above-average winter-spring rainfall for Australia, particularly across eastern, central and northern regions.

“A La Nina also typically brings cooler and cloudier days, more tropical cyclones, and an earlier onset of the first rains of the northern wet season.”

Dr Watkins said spring was typically a time of year when outlook models had a higher reliability.

“At this time of year, we start to see some of our main climate drivers locking in, which gives more certainty about what our weather patterns will be like in the coming months.

“We’re starting to see that in the Pacific with a La Nina beginning to take shape, and we are also seeing some changes in the Indian Ocean, which may also boost the chance of rain during spring.”

He also said that while the start to winter was very dry, Gippsland bucked the trend and had a wetter than average winter.

“Overall, winter was drier than average for every state except New South Wales,” he said.

“It was particularly wet in Gippsland in Victoria and the south coast of New South Wales.

“Earlier in the winter period, conditions were drier than normal, as rain bearing weather systems were being blocked by a belt of high-pressure systems sitting across the country.”

“Gippsland experienced two cold fronts that came in from the south-west that brought with it strong winds upwards of 100km/h plus, with winds recorded at 150km/h at Wilsons Promontory,” Mr Hooper said.

“Most of those were relating to trees that had come down to impact buildings, as well as the impact on properties and roads.

“We also experienced a number of vehicles that were travelling along at the time that collided with trees.”

Mr Hooper praised the efforts of members who worked throughout Thursday night and most of Friday to clean up the damage.

“We had a lot of volunteer members out overnight, in particular around West and South Gippsland,” he said.

“They worked tirelessly through the night and it was a great effort from our volunteer contingent.

“We ask the community once they’ve reported the incident to please be patient, our priority is life, then property.”

Mr Hooper also stressed to residents to be aware of potential risks, even though the storm had well and truly passed through.

“If you’re driving a vehicle, slow down, you don’t know what’s around the next corner,” he said.

“We ask people to inspect their property and be aware that trees may fall, even after the incident and given the current ground conditions, with the amount of rain we’ve had it’s probable that trees will continue to fall during this period.

The SES urges residents to: ■ Drive slowly, obey all road signs and never drive through floodwater.

■ Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.

■ Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live.

Power outages were reported in Mirboo North, Yinnar, Churchill, Moe, Boolarra, Yarragon and Narracan.

The maximum wind gust recorded in the Latrobe Valley was 83km/h at 6.18pm, although there was not much

rain in the cold front, with 8.2mm recorded in the 24-hour period up until 9am on Friday.

Emergency services reported minor flooding along the Latrobe River downstream of Traralgon on Friday morning.

The Latrobe River was at 4.12m and steady at 11am on Friday, above the minor flood level of 4m.

A cold front which rolled through on Sunday night brought a maximum wind gust of 69km/h and 2.8mm of rain up until 5am with the temperature plunging from 21.6 degrees to a brisk 6.3 degrees.

Pastor John Lamb of Heart Focus Community Care, which recently opened a food bank across The Express office, was distributing care packages to encourage business owners who were finding it tough due to current restrictions.

“Our businesses are struggling and a lot of people have invested a lot of money and a lot of personal resources into their business and we are concerned,” he said.

“Our businesses in Morwell and Traralgon have put a lot into the community.They put out the best that they could (and) this is our way of saying ‘hey, thank you very much’”.

Pastor Lamb said the project, which started on George Street, would spread across Morwell businesses and include emergency services and the offices of local members.

MPs hold concerns over legislation

LOCAL politicians have tabled concerns about the legislation that underpins the state government’s bid to extend Victoria’s State of Emergency by 12 months.

The bill, which if passed will grant the government powers to enforce public health directions relating to coronavirus, is set to be presented to parliament this week.

It does not mean current lockdown restrictions will be extended but makes available other protections like the mandated wearing of masks and COVIDSafe plans in workplaces.

It also ensures public health risk powers can be exercised, such as requiring positive cases of coronavirus to isolate, which can only be enforced under a State of Emergency.

The current State of Emergency has been in place since March and expires

on September 13, but the government will push for an extension on the basis it will allow for the continued protection of Victorians.

Member for Morwell Russell Northe pointed to a clause in the legislation which includes the provision of powers in instances where community transmission is low or there are no new COVID-19 cases. “From my perspective, to allow any government such powers and without oversight or accountability for (12 months) is concerning,� Mr Northe said. “In my opinion, there must be a balance of the impacts of the virus alongside the consideration of the health, mental health and economic impacts upon individuals, businesses and families. “On that basis I believe that if a State of Emergency is to continue then the government should be mandated to return to parliament regularly. “This would allow transparent

reporting on how and why they have based their decisions in response to the virus ... so that these can be tested by the parliament on behalf of Victorians.�

Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath raised several concerns about the legislation, including the absence of options other than a blanket 12-month extension of the State of Emergency. “In my opinion we could look to other models, for example, South Australia’s State of Emergency model includes a month by month proposition with parliamentary oversight and scrutiny,� she said. “No government should be able to write legislation which delivers itself extraordinary power over Victorians’ lives and livelihoods without accountability. It is imperative we have protections to suppress the virus, however our communities are being crushed under the current burden,� she said.

“Issuing a 12 month extension to the State of Emergency and ‘just in case’ powers, or as Daniel Andrews calls it, ‘an insurance policy’ - is not the answer. “There must be scrutiny and rigorous checks and balances. The proposed legislation would hand extraordinary powers to the Premier to make rules and restrictions with no recourse.�

Ms Bath said regional Victorians had been “magnificent� in their response to the coronavirus, but stressed the need to a “plan to safely re-open our state ... “instead of living with harsh lockdowns until September 2021�. “Sadly, but realistically we will have to live with coronavirus into (the) foreseeable future,� she said. “This legislation should not be the basis of that plan. Consequently, I will be opposing the Premier’s State of Emergency legislation.�

Paul now making Headway Birthday party turns sour following courageous battle A LATROBE Valley woman received a $1652 fine at the weekend after holding a five-year-old birthday party at her home.

Police attended the residence on Saturday to find 20 people in attendance – 12 adults and eight children.

It comes as the number of active coronavirus cases in Latrobe City climbed to 13 this weekend after a relatively stable fortnight.

There were nine active infections in the region as of Friday, but an additional two cases were detected on Saturday and two on Sunday.

Across Gippsland there are 18 active cases, with two in Wellington and East Gippsland, and one in Bass Coast.

Statewide there were 94 new infections recorded on Saturday and 114 on Sunday.

There were 29 new deaths recorded across the weekend, taking Victoria’s tally to 524.

PAUL Bur thought that he was out of the woods when doctors removed a tumour in his brain in 2011. “All of a sudden I had a massive headache and I wasn’t well,� he recalled.

It was later found that he developed meningitis and fluid was leaking from his brain.

Doctors tried to stop the leak, however in the process it caused brain bleeding. “They drained too much fluid. I had a bleed on the brain,� the Moe resident told The Express.

Mr Bur developed an acquired brain injury as a result of the damage and retired from his job at the Hazelwood Power Station in 2016.

He worked at the power generator in various roles starting as an apprentice painter at the age of 15.

At 23, Mr Bur was assigned to paint one of Hazelwood’s iconic eight chimneys, which were demolished earlier this year.

He said the impacts of ABI were “huge� as he did not only lost his capacity to work but it changed his life “dramatically�.

An acquired brain injury is the result of damage to the brain and can occur in various ways including trauma, stroke, and tumour. “You lose your short-term memory, your balance, you get so tired easily, your thought process isn’t good and your temperament becomes more aggressive,� the 55-year-old father-of-two said.

Mr Bur also lost his hearing and his speech gets slurred when he is tired. “I don’t sleep properly, my brain just hurts, it’s worse than your ordinary headache.

Mr Bur considers himself one of the “lucky ones� to have survived a brain tumour and bleeding.

Mr Bur said ABI was an “unseen disability� that a lot of people were not aware of. “Your brain is injured but you look like a normal person.

People easily go to the wrong conclusion that nothing’s wrong with you, however it’s not like when you got a broken arm you can see it,� he said.

Mr Bur said he was initially unhappy about his diagnosis until his wife encouraged him to contact the disability

support service Headway Gippsland.

From a participant, he is now a member of the not-for-profit organisation’s board and an advocate for people living with ABI and other disabilities.

He said he enjoys coming to Headway’s social group meetings where he connects with people with a lived ABI experience and doing various activities.

Mr Bur’s story and other people living with ABI was featured in a book project to be launched by Headway soon.

LATROBE City Council is asking for public comment on its draft Investment Roadmap for the Latrobe Valley.

The draft document aims to promote long-term sustainable economic growth across the region and can be viewed online, where locals can make submissions.

Submissions for the draft Investment Roadmap are open now and close on Friday, September 18 at 5pm.

Lockdown does not stop Joe’s passion

WHEN Joe Tanti built his first model ship at the age of 14, there was little indication more than five decades on he would fill his garage with hundreds of them.

Mr Tanti, 69, has recently completed his latest project, featuring two ships, while in lockdown.

One was an eight-foot replica of James Cook’s HMS Endeavour, which he made out of wood and accessorised with miniature boats and strings to complete the look of a sailor ship.

The other was a model of a US aircraft carrier, which stands two metres long and boasts miniature bomber planes and ammunition.

Mr Tanti, who came to Australia from Malta in 1965, said he was always fascinated by ships and tankers as a young boy.

“When I was a teenager I asked my brother Fred to make me a model ship and he said to me ‘you do it’ and so I did,” he recalled.

Mr Tanti said his first model

ship was created using plastic and from there evolved to using other materials such as wood.

It took him seven months to complete his two projects, working on them at times as early as 3am in his backyard because he couldn’t go back to sleep.

Mr Tanti is a self-taught handyman and moved to the Latrobe Valley after working at a Melbourne butcher shop for 38 years.

How he was able to make around 600 model ships, planes and tankers that take pride of place inside his Morwell garage is as interesting as his fascination for Asian superstar Bruce Lee and his love for collecting candles.

Mr Tanti looks at photos from magazines and uses his imagination when working on a replica.

“I like model ships, if I see something I just want to do it,” he said.

“Maybe this would be the last one because there’s not much room in my garage.”

Mr Tanti said he decided

to do his latest projects as a way to keep busy during the lockdown.

He is an active member of the Maltese community and played a huge part in setting up the Maltese museum in Morwell, the only one of its kind in Australia.

“With the Maltese Club closed and I can’t do gardening on people’s homes where do I go?” he said.

“I don’t like doing nothing.”

Mr Tanti said the HMS Endeavour replica was the most difficult project that he has done so far as he had to bend the wood he used to build the sides of the ship.

“You need to get them wet to be able to bend them,” he said.

Mr Tanti said he was happy to sell his model sailor ship for $1000 and the aircraft carrier for $400 to any buyer.

If not he will keep them both in his Morwell home where hundreds of his other creations are kept to delight visitors.

“We know that many young LGBTI+ people face significant societal and educational challenges - especially if they are from rural and regional communities,” Mr Staite said.

“We understand how education can significantly change the course of a person’s life. We believe everybody has the right to be proud of who they are.”

She is now studying a Bachelor of Computer Science at Swinburne University and said the PinnacIe Foundation offered financial assistance and paired her with a mentor who worked in IT. “I came across the Pinnacle Foundation during my first year of study, and admired not just the financial side of things, but also their family mentality,” Olivia said.

“They really do their best to support us and keep us afloat.”

Olivia encouraged others to apply for the scholarship.

“There are other LGBTI+ people out there shining their pride lights. Just remember, you are enough, you are valid - regardless of your upbringing, your gender, your sexuality,” she said.

“You’ll find your people, just keep trying, and think to yourself: what’s the harm in applying?”

AN independent review of NAPLAN commissioned by Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and the ACT is recommending an overhaul of the national standardised assessment to ensure that it meets the needs of schools, parents and students now and into the future.

Wonderful story of caring for the community

NO doubt 2020 will go down as a unique year - underlined by many things including uncertainty.

One thing that is certain, however, is the importance of our local community.

The CWA Morwell Evening Branch identified that while the younger generations are busy on social media a lot of our elderly community are probably feeling more isolated than ever in the current pandemic.

The CWA ladies came up with the idea of distributing COVID Care Bags to people they felt could do with some cheering up at this time.

They nominated people who they identified as elderly, living alone and possibly feeling isolated.

With a list in hand COVID Care Bags were prepared and distributed.

The bags were made up of handmade masks, handmade cards, puzzle books, and some essential and non-essential grocery items.

The aim was to let the recipients know other people were thinking about them and reaching out.

The bags have been received well, one member gave a bag to an elderly neighbour in her street who she would pass whilst walking and would say hello, by giving the bag the dialogue has now opened up with this elderly resident.

Other people saw the CWA Facebook post and contacted some of the people they recognised in the photos, which created more conversations.

Out of this project they saw how much face to face contact, or a phone call can make a big difference to someone living alone.

CWA Morwell Evening Branch’s aim is to encourage everyone to take some time away from social media and call an elderly or socially isolated person that they know and reach out to let them know people are thinking about them.

It is all about feeling connected with your community.

Five more Orange Doors open

THE state government is supporting more women and children escape family violence with the rollout of the Orange Door Network in an additional five areas of the state, as we continue to implement all the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Family Violence.

The Orange Door Network will expand to Melbourne’s south and inner-east, Ovens Murray, Wimmera SouthWest and Outer Gippsland.

Orange Door is about providing every family the specialist support they need - regardless of where they live - from workers across family violence, child and family services, Aboriginal and men’s services, along with emergency and crisis services.

The network is already operating in five areas across the state including Morwell.

“My message to all Victorians is that help is there if you need it. Escaping violence at home is always a reason to leave your home, no matter what stage restrictions are in place,” Premier Daniel Andrews said.

“We’re continuing to work hard so that Victorians can access the services they need, when they need it - and stay safe.”

DESTINATION Gippsland’s Visit Gippsland/Destination Gippsland website, www. visitgippsland.com.au, has won gold in the Melbourne Design Awards!

The website, produced by Evolution7 and launched in December 2019, is primarily designed to promote visitor experiences across Gippsland to anyone planning a break in the region and to those already in region who are looking for things to do.

There is also an industryfacing side to the website, which has played a key role in keeping tourism and hospitality businesses informed on the changes and challenges that 2020 has thrown our way, and ways that businesses can find support to navigate this difficult year.

“The launch of this new website has proven timely for us, being able to adapt our messaging and content to accommodate the challenges of bushfire recovery and then COVID-19,” Destination Gippsland chief executive officer Terry Robinson said.

“For instance, we have been able to promote pre-purchase of travel vouchers and online purchase from Gippsland producers during lockdown.”

New book showcases co-op’s beginnings

IN March 1955, the Moe Dairy Co-operative celebrated its 50th anniversary.

From its beginnings in 1905 it had successfully developed into a major industry in Moe. The local paper described the original founders of the co-operative as ‘Men of vision’.

The story of the Co-operative has now been published in a new book by the Moe & District Historical Society.

It is one outcome of the successful ‘Made in Moe’ exhibition held in the Moe Library in 2018 which encouraged members to seek out further information on local industry.

The Dairy Co-operative was located at the corner of George Street and Saviges Road and operated from 1905 to 1986 and at its peak had just under 100 employees.

The only remaining building from those days is the hardware store which was originally the commercial outlet for the co-operative.

Competition closing date extended

THE ‘Edward Hunter Heritage Bush Reserve’ committee of management has extended the closing date of its photography and artwork competition for youth to Monday, October 19.

Stage 3 restrictions have made it difficult for students to submit artwork entries via their schools and for a committee member to visit the Moe/Newborough schools to collect their work.

Moving the competition closing date should allow students time, once restrictions ease, to submit their artwork.

The competition is open to primary and secondary school students who may enter either a photograph of nature taken within the reserve or an artwork inspired by nature within the reserve.

Anniversary celebrations postponed

THE Morwell Catholic Parish Pastoral Committee regrets that due to the current health crisis, they have unfortunately had to postpone the celebrations for the 50th Anniversary of the Sacred Heart Church.

Observed every year on August 26, International Dog Day presents an opportunity for dog lovers everywhere to acknowledge the invaluable contributions our canine companions.

International Dog Day was founded in 2004 by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige to raise awareness of the importance of adoption and rescue.

August 26 was chosen because it was the date Ms Paige’s family adopted her first dog Sheltie from the local animal shelter when she was 10 years old.

“Millions of dogs are killed each year because they’re simply unwanted,” Ms Paige said.

“They’re unwanted because no one realised how to properly care for the demands of the breed.

“They’re unwanted because they were bought as a Christmas gift for a child that didn’t keep their promises about caring for the dog ... unwanted because they shed too much ... unwanted because they bark too much.

“All a dog wants to do is love you and be loved by you. Dogs are amazing, courageous, sensitive and sentient beings that deserve compassion and respect.

“Please consider bringing what was once considered unwanted love into your heart and home.”

To mark the day, The Express issued a call out for Facebook users to submit photos of their four-legged best friends.

YARRAGON is set to house one of 17 new dog parks across the state funded by the state goverment.

Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily Dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Ambrosio, on Wednesday, announced a further $2.5 million to create seven new dog parks in Melbourne, and 10 in regional Victoria as part of the state governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s $154 million Suburban Parks Program. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Now more than ever, we realise the value of having open green

TO spread some positivity in these challenging times, students at Thorpdale Primary School have created a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Kindness Stationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; at the entrance to the school.

Teacher Alice Kenneth came up with the idea as a way of generating positivity within the school and wider community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wanted to encourage the children to think of others and learn how doing something kind for someone else makes you feel good,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Initially, the Kindness Station was stocked with excess food from the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s breakfast program in addition to bunches of flowers picked from the school grounds.

In the short time since its inception, it has grown to include donations of toys and books ready for a new home, fresh eggs and vegetables, and even some home-baked treats.

It is hoped that people take something that makes them smile or leave something that makes others smile.

Ms Kenneth said it has been great to see the Thorpdale community embracing this new initiative and giving back where they can.

The $2.5 million investment is part of the state governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Building Works package, which is providing $2.7 billion towards projects, big and small, to get thousands of people back to work.

Smart Farms Small Grants FARMERS, fishers and foresters can now apply for funding to support their natural resource management efforts.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said applications were now open for grants of up to $100,000 as part of round four of the Smart Farms Small Grants program. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Gippsland is an agriculturally rich region and it is important to ensure our farming, fishing and forestry practices are sustainable,â&#x20AC;?

Mr Chester said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These grants are designed to support one to two-year projects that boost best practice sustainable farming awareness, skills and capacity. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Projects could range from pest control, vegetation management, farm input efficiency, climate and market management and the use of new technologies.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Chester said these grants were designed to help farmers to adopt the next generation of sustainable farming practices. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As primary producers adapt their practices to be sustainable, it is important they have the support and accessibility to funding,â&#x20AC;? Mr Chester said.

Smart Farms Small Grants is a sustainable agriculture element of the National Landcare Program (NLP).

Recalling the incredible Yiannis Kouros REMEMBER WHEN

IN 1987, in the late March evening gloom, excited members of the local Greek community dotted the Highway through the Latrobe Valley, from east of Traralgon to beyond Moe. They were waiting to see and cheer on their Greek running hero Yiannis Kouros, on his way to winning the 1060km Sydney to Melbourne race - on foot.

Beyond the Valley, Kouros continued on through the night, with only a short rest, running through cheering crowds next morning to cross the finish line at the Westfield Doncaster shopping centre, 24 hours ahead of second placed Patrick Macke.

Kouros was already an ultramarathon running legend, in his own country and his adopted country of Australia - and all around the world.

He had already won the Sydney-Melbourne challenge two years earlier, in 1985, in five days and five hours.

He possessed a number of world record times across many distances, and for distances run in 24-hour and in six-day races.

Regarded as the greatest ultrarunner of all time, Kouros was born in Tripoli, Greece.

Raised in a poor family, he performed manual labour at a young age and ran for pleasure, as he could not afford movies or other entertainment.

He was an outstanding junior athlete and increased his race distances over the years.

By his late twenties he had run almost 30 marathons, winning the Athens Marathon in 1981.

He then tackled the Spartathlon that pays homage to the legendary Pheidippides, who was reputed to have run from Marathon to Sparta and return.

Kouros won the 250km race from Athens across Greece to Sparta in just under 22 hours - so surprisingly quick there were no officials at the finish line to greet him.

They questioned his honesty. He returned the next year and ran even faster. He won the Spartathlon four times with the four fastest times ever.

1987 was the first time the Sydney-Melbourne ultramarathon went through Gippsland and the Latrobe Valley, but the event began in 1983, running down the Hume Freeway with a distance of about 870km.

Labelled the “World’s Toughest Ultra”, with lots of publicity it gathered a large crowd that cheered the eleven runners on their way as the NSW premier Neville Wran fired the starting pistol. In 1983, iconic ultrarunners Tony Rafferty and George Perdon overshadowed the unknown veteran Cliff Young.

Former Traralgon Harrier Martin Thompson, with more than 100 marathons under his sandshoes and a fourth place in a UK 160km a few years earlier, was not expected to dominate over the longer distance.

Cliffy’s incredible victory in 1983 created even more intense media coverage across the country, and brought out large spectator crowds.

The next year, 1984, Cliff ran again, this time from Melbourne to Sydney.

But fellow Victorian Geoff Molloy won ahead of John Hughes and Tony Rafferty, demonstrating the same toughness he displayed as a bike rider.

In second place in the Sun Tour in 1965 Molloy was seriously injured in a group crash near Moe, but insisted on riding the next day. And Cliff finished in seventh place, a day behind Molloy, but at 63 years of age was still a hero.

A FEW months before the 1985 SydneyMelbourne challenge Yiannis Kouros won the inaugural Colac six day track race, the first time it was contested in the southern hemisphere, setting a new world record.

He had already established an international reputation as an outstanding ultra-distance runner. So in the lead up to the 1985 race the presence of Kouros, then aged 29, created more media and public interest than anyone could have imagined. And the presence of ‘Cliffy’ Young was an added headline grabber.

After running the 960km course, Kouros won with a time of five days, five hours and seven minutes, with second placed Siggy Bauer’s official finish time 24 hours later.

A courageous Cliff Young had withdrawn and was in the Holbrook hospital with pneumonia.

Next year, in 1986, Kouros did not run due to a foot injury. Dusan Mravlje from Yugoslavia was a comfortable winner, with three women finishers and Eleanor Adams, a UK record holder, in outright third place. And a fatal accident and a near miss for a runner triggered a change of course the following year.

The first time through the Valley

The change of course for the event saw the runners make their way through Gippsland and the Latrobe Valley on their way to the finish line - over 1000km from the start.

The new route was from Sydney to Canberrra, south over the Monaro High Plains through Cooma and Bombala to Cann River on the Princes Highway, then onward to Melbourne, passing through many Gippsland towns along the way.

Cliff Young was among the 26 starters after a year off in 1986. Other noted runners were Australian Tony Rafferty, New Zealander Dick Tout and the previous year’s winner Dusan Mravlje.

The two women runners in the field were American Mary Hanudel and Victorian Cynthia Cameron.

With much excitement the wife of the NSW premier fired the starting pistol on March 26.

By Canberra, Kouros was already 40km ahead of second placed Tout and despite the heat, after two days was nearing Cooma.

At Bombala he was escorted into town by mounted high country cattlemen, and at Cann River was presented with a boomerang, and was feeling good as he ran through the East Gippsland forests.

He reached Bairnsdale by Day 5 and was now over 100km in the lead.

However near Sale he met a headwind that slowed him, and he began to take a few breaks.

The Latrobe Valley Greek diaspora had been glued to their radios and in the late afternoon assembled along the highway leading into the main Valley towns.

Reaching the Latrobe Valley that evening Kouros was still fighting a headwind that slowed him to a walk near Morwell.

Physically affected, he checked into a hotel in Moe for rest and recovery before continuing on to Melbourne during the evening.

In the early hours thousands of cheering spectators, including a huge Greek presence, greeted him at the finish.

He had run from Sydney to Melbourne, with little sleep, in five days, 14 hours, 47 minutes, establishing a world record for 1000km.

Kouros finished 150km ahead of second placed Englishman Patrick Macke, who finished 24 hours later, with Tout in third place. Cynthia Cameron, 8d 10h 55m, finished only two hours ahead of Mary Hanudel, both just ahead of Tony Rafferty, while Cliff Young finished four days after Kouros.

Half a day start in 1988

AFTER his huge winning margins in 1985 and 1987 Kouros gave the rest of the field a 12 hour start in 1988, again across the High Plains and through Gippsland.

If he ran a quicker time he was still the winner, as distinct from ‘line honours’ by crossing the finish line first. Moe runner

John Breit was in the field for the first time, qualifying by running 293km in a 48-hour race in Melbourne. The avid running fans in the Valley had two icons to support.

Allambee plant nursery proprietor Ian Cornthwaite, a fellow international runner and long-time Traralgon Harrier, still running with the club today, was one of Breit’s support crew.

After the second day, Kouros, conceding half a day start, was still 60km behind the leader, Dick Tout, and he was still 30km adrift at Lakes Entrance.

But by the end of the fifth day, Kouros had overtaken Tout.

With little rest himself, Kouros had passed Tout who was sleeping in his support van.

Kouros went on to win his third SydneyMelbourne by 16 hours, after conceding a 12 hour start.

John Breit was one of the 23 finishers from the field of 42 starters.

In his fourth Sydney-Melbourne in 1989 Kouros again started his race at 11pm, 12 hours behind the main field.

Victorian Ultra-running stalwart Kevin Cassidy took on his first two-state challenge, and Cliff Young returned for what was to be his farewell appearance. John Breit lined up again, after a second place in the 200km Launceston to Hobart ultra-race.

Breit ran the first 42.2km - the marathon distance - in an incredible 3 hours 6 minutes - with only another 1000km to go. Previous placegetters Tout and Mravlje were almost as quick.

In freezing cold with vicious winds blowing all runners were struggling. Kevin Cassidy tore a calf muscle and withdrew.

Cliff Young was falling back, barely making the cut off points at Canberra and at the 370km mark at Cooma.

He just failed to reach the 425km Bombala cut off, and withdrew with dignity, announcing his retirement from future events.

On the morning of Day 4, David Standeven was in front, 15km ahead of Kouros.

But Kouros was closing the gap. The Valley residents who drove toward Sale in the early morning darkness saw Kouros running toward them, looking comfortable, with his path lit by the support vehicle closely behind him.

Still ahead on reaching Melbourne and despite almost collapsing during the last few kilometres, David Standeven finished 32 minutes ahead of Kouros, after receiving a 12 hour start. Standeven won line honours, but Kouros again won the race, his fourth victory.

Some of the international runners finished and some withdrew, including John Breit through injury, at the 744km mark past Bairnsdale.

And the weather was worse the next year.

Kouros makes it five and four in a row

FOR the 1990 race Kouros accepted an eight hour handicap, and was optimistic about

breaking the five day mark. But the weather gods had other thoughts.

In May, reporting on the race, The Canberra Times proclaimed, “Snow, strong winds batter ultra runners”.

“Early snow and high winds in the southern NSW mountain country have battered runners in the eighth Sydney to Melbourne Westfield Run. Race Director Charlie Lynn said the weather was the worst in the history of the race with everyone, including race leader Yiannis Kouros, suffering.”

“Kouros was still troubled by a cold he caught running into the mountains on Friday.

‘In the morning when I crossed the border I was jumping for joy . . now this weather is getting me down again’, said Kouros, who led the 30 other runners in the race by 50km at the 584km mark, 40km south of Cann River.”

“Kouros said his hands were swollen from the cold and he felt for the runners further back battling the snow. But he said he had a knack of turning a bad or unfavourable situation into a positive one and he still thought he was running well enough to break the record”, The Times reported.

Kouros in fact finished only five minutes inside the six day mark, due mainly to the extreme weather, but was 10 hours ahead of second placed Bryan Smith. Almost all finished, despite the conditions, and John Breit placed seventh of the twenty finishers.

For reasons only he knew, 1990 was Kouros’s final Sydney to Melbourne race.

It was his fifth victory and fourth in a row, without being defeated. Perhaps he had achieved what he wanted. The 1991 event was the final Sydney to Melbourne race.

300 kilometres in 24 hours

KOUROS continued his Gippsland connection when he ran alongside two Traralgon Harriers relay teams that competed in the 24-hour ultra-marathon championships at the Coburg athletics track in April 1997.

The highlight of the weekend was Kouros, who despite blistering temperatures on both days repeated his 1996 win. He completed his first marathon distance in 3 hours, and completed over six marathons on end, not stopping even for minor calls of nature.

Halfway through his seventh marathon he was forced to walking pace because of a knee injury. His total of 266.18km was disappointingly short of his own world record and well under his target of the magical 300km, to which he had come so close, so often.

A member of the Harriers veteran team who ran the final relay leg in the last 30 minutes of the race realised, after running only 30km across the 24 hours, that he could not keep up with Kouros, who had already run non-stop for 23 and a half hours.

The Australian 100km road race at Glengarry

IN early April the following year those attending the Sunday service at the Glengarry Anglican Church were surprised to see a hive of activity across the street.

It was the support crew and officials for the Australian 100km road championship contenders who were running ten laps of a 10km course along River Road and its surrounds.

Early in 1998 The Express announced, “World champion endurance runner Yiannis Kouros will defend his Australian title in the Australian 100 kilometre road championships to be run at Glengarry in April”.

The Australian Ultra Runners Association (AURA) invited the Harriers to host the Australian title race, and race director Geoff Duffell said, “Kouros aims to run inside his previous best time of 6 hours 56 minutes to defend his Australian 100km title, and along with local runners Ian Cornthwaite, Nenet Suza and Melbourne’s Nigel Aylott, will almost certainly break a fairly ‘soft’ Australian six-hour record of 70km along the way”.

Duffell explained that the top three finishers in the event gain automatic selection for the 100 km World Championships.

Kouros won comfortably in 7 hours 14 minutes, ahead of ultra journeyman Kelvin Marshall, in 8:10.7, with Nigel Aylott third in 8:33.19. A number of Australian time and distance records were established by both the men and women runners.

Kouros held Australian citizenship for part of his running career and was inducted into the AURA Hall of Fame in 2019.

And his philosophy is, “When other people get tired, they stop. I don’t. I take over my body with my mind. I tell it that it’s not tired and it listens”.

SPORTING clubs across Eastern Victoria are being urged to apply for funding to boost their equipment, skills and administration expertise.

Labor Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing last week announced applications had opened for the latest round of the state governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2020-21 Sporting Club Grants Program.

Clubs can receive up to $1000 for new uniforms and equipment, up to $5000 for training coaches, officials and volunteers, and up to $5000 to improve club operational effectiveness. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Sporting Club Grants Program is giving grassroots sports clubs in Eastern Victoria the support they need to grow their ranks and help more people than ever play the sports they love,â&#x20AC;? Said Ms Shing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I encourage all our local clubs in Eastern Victoria to grasp this opportunity and apply.â&#x20AC;?

Community Sport Minister Ros Spence has also announced the establishment of the new funding program, the Aboriginal Sporting Participation Grants Program.

This new program will be a tailored annual grants program to address the participation barriers indigenous Victorians experience in sport and active recreation, with applications for this grant opening later in the year.

MUSIC Addition hit the right note to pull off a coup for Moe trainer Peter Gelagotis with a dashing victory in the $50,000 Sportsbet Synthetic Sprint Series Final (1200m) at Pakenham on Friday.

The former Hong Kong galloper belied his $26 starting price to lead all the way in the Benchmark 78 feature in his first success since returning Down Under.

Music Addition started his career in Sydney under Peter Robl, landing two wins at Gosford before winning two of his six Hong Kong starts.

The son of Your Song joined the Gelagotis stable earlier in the year, but had failed to fire on rain-affected tracks, prompting a switch to the synthetic.

Addition straight to the lead from barrier one and he never looked back, holding off favourite Titan Blinders by a length in 1.10.67.

The Great One is another former Hong Kong galloper, who at start two, rattled home courtesy of a heady Campbell Rawiller ride to prevail.

Gelagotis had Grand Quill and Audacious Beau entered to run at Pakenham today, and Captain Spud at Benalla tomorrow.

Captain Spud features among the nominations for the Caulfield Guineas, while stable star Levendi was last week nominated for the Melbourne Cup. Levendi, the 2018 ATC Derby winner, also holds a nomination for the Cox Plate.

Bailey apologised for the error when the judge put up the numbers, although that did not spark a social media meltdown.
