Good Friday Appeal

ESSENDON legend Tim Watson is forming part of an exciting new radio program, launched in the Latrobe Valley today.

SENTrack 91.9 FM Latrobe Valley hit the airwaves from 6am this morning for local sport fans.

Working under the slogan of ‘chasing, pacing and racing’ SENTrack features some of the biggest names in racing and sport.

Watson, who is joined by Melbourne champion Garry Lyon for the breakfast program, said the show would appeal to sport lovers.

“It’s a unique program, it’s like joining in a conversation with blokes who love having a punt, love having fun, and love horse racing,” he said.

“There’s people (on the program) who have spent a lot of time on the track and have been jockeys, owners, trainers...all sorts of people.

“You get a lot of information along the way, a lot of background, a lot of stories, and a lot of anecdotes as well.”

Watson played more than 300 games for Essendon, where he is regarded as one of the clubs greatest players.

He was part of premiership winning teams in 1984 and 1985 and famously came out of retirement to help the ‘Baby Bombers’ win the 1993 flag.

Amazingly, he made his VFL debut at just 15 years of age, a feat that will surely never be seen in the modern-era.

The Essendon-Gippsland connection is quite strong, with Watson residing part time near Lake Glenmaggie, and current Bombers captain Dyson Heppell hailing from Leongatha.

Thorpdale’s Jason Winderlich also enjoyed a 129 game career in the red and black, while Jay Nagle coached Traralgon Tyers United.

Watson was pragmatic when asked about the fortunes of the current Essendon team.

“They’ve probably taken another step back to go forward again,” he said.

“I think they’ve done the right thing, I think they’ve got a lot of talent through the door in the last 12 months but it will take a while before that develops.

“They’re not a top eight side - they’re a developing team.

“They played a lot of first gamers round one, and they’ve got a lot of young players that are going to play throughout the course of the year.

LOCALS are again being encouraged to give generously to this year’s Good Friday Appeal.

Donation tins will be out in force at traffic lights and local businesses across Gippsland to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Money raised from the appeal enables the Royal Children’s Hospital to provide world class care to children.

SUE BECHAZ Moe-Newborough Good Friday Appeal co-ordinator Sue Bechaz said all donations are great appreciated.

“Every little bit helps, it is a very worthy cause,” she said.

“It all goes straight to the Royal Children’s, nothing goes anywhere else, they get all the funds.

“The Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal people are just fantastic, they are so helpful and so friendly and so grateful.”

Ms Bechaz has been coordinating the Moe area for some 10 years, after taking over from Darrell Benjamin who had an amazing 35 year stint.

Come Good Friday, local groups will get together to count their donation tallies, and watch the telethon covering the appeal.

Ms Bechaz said the kind words from those who have relied on the RCH was always something that stood out.

“It’s good that in you speak to people and they have all got their own stories of how they’ve used it (the RCH) or their grandkids, you just don’t know how much they actually do need it” she said.

As the Watson-Lyon breakfast program is sports oriented, talk about the new AFL standing-themark rules is sure to be a topic of discussion.

Watson said early signs pointed to the rules making for a more attractive game.

“I think we are already seeing that the game has opened up, the ball is going to be in play more often and coaches are going to find it more difficult to shut the game down and crowd the spaces,” he said.

“I think it’s been a win and I think players will get tired throughout the course of the year but I think right now football is as exciting as we’ve seen it in a long, long time.”

The SENTrack breakfast program will be followed by racing broadcaster Andrew Bensley from 8am to 11am, covering all the latest ahead in the days racing.

Group one winning jockey David Taggart will offer previews with Trackside in the afternoons, before a drive program between 5pm and 6pm with Western Bulldogs hero and another Gippsland product Bob Murphy and well known commentator Andy Maher.

Brownlow medalist Gerard Healy and prominent journalist Sam McClure will host Sportsday from 6pm to 7pm, wrapping up all the action from the day in sport.

On weekends, former Australian cricketer Simon O’Donnell and Taggard will present Saturday Trackside, giving punters the latest mail on raceday The Gippsland connection continues with Tuesday night greyhounds at Warragul also forming part of the coverage, the same town in which Sport Entertainment Network chief executive Craig Hutchison hails from.

Hutchison said it was great to bring SEN to passionate Latrobe Valley sport and racing fans.

MENTAL health and wellbeing service providers will come together for a community event in Moe this Thursday.

Various service providers in Latrobe City will attend to promote their services.

Youth Support and Advocacy Service (YSAS), Gippsland East Gippsland Aboriginal Cooperative (GEGAC), Headspace Morwell and Latrobe Community Health Service (LCHS) will be on hand to offer information.

The organisations are united in wanting young people to live productive lives and to get access to services that can assist them.

As well as information packs, there will also be therapy dogs, street games and a barbecue for people to enjoy.

The COVID-19 team from Latrobe Community Health Service will also attend to provide information about the virus.

YSAS Morwell manager Mark Tanti hoped to see a strong turnout, and said the event would be a “live Google maps” of services available.

“Come down, have a bit of fun and get some information, meet the people that are providing the service,” he said.

The community event is being held outside the Moe Library on Thursday,April 1 from 3pm to 5pm.

Locals arrested at Melbourne protest

TWO Gippsland women, who were part of a contingency of environmental protesters from across the region, were arrested for gluing themselves to the road outside Flinders Street station on Saturday.

A group of about 12 members of the Gippsland Extinction Rebellion had joined a week-long series of Extinction Rebellion protests in Melbourne last week calling for urgent action on climate change.

Nicholson woman Ro Gooch was arrested along with another woman from Foster, after gluing their hands to the Flinders and Swanston streets intersection with a group of other women, blocking traffic for about an hour.

Onlookers chanted “you are a climate hero” as Ms Gooch was taken away by police, after a police officer used a solvent to remove the glue and take her off the road.

Ms Gooch - who had been arrested in the Tasmanian Franklin Dam protests in the 1980s said she believed governments were “ignoring the urgency of the climate emergency”.

“For me, I’m grieving the damage that’s being done to the environment. The fact we are having a gas-led recovery is ridiculous. Zero emissions by 2050 is not fast enough,” Ms Gooch said.

“These actions are the only way we can get people listening.We can keep writing letters and going to rallies, but politicians are not listening.”

The special education teacher was charged with creating a public nuisance, and is due to face court at a later date, but said she “found the courage to get arrested in solidarity with other women”.

“The police treated us very professionally. They worked carefully to dissolve the glue. I felt solidarity and support, we were doing this for everybody,” she said.

About 2000 police were deployed for the week long Autumn Rebellion actions, in which activists disrupted central business district traffic in a series of rolling protests.

Some actions included staging sit-downs on major thoroughfares, dancing in the streets, and stopping traffic on the West Gate Freeway.

Acting Premier James Merlino said the protesters risked getting the public offside with their actions that involved non-violent civil disobedience.

“If you disrupt people’s lives, that’s not a great way to win an argument,” he told the media last week.

High catch rates recorded for Thomson River

“Seeing a return of Tupong above the fishway is evidence that it is allowing fish passage upstream,” She said.

“It is a strong signal that river conditions and environmental flows are providing both the upstream connection and the flow cues favourable to our native species, “It is very encouraging and we look forward to seeing further number increases, in species such as Grayling, turning up in fish surveys in coming years.”

Record numbers were also found in the lower section of the river, bolstered by the migration of a large number of juveniles into the system.

Dr Suter said this is encouraging on a number of fronts.

“Overall, the numbers of fish like the Tupong and the Australian Grayling are up, indicating good conditions and the likelihood of more fish found throughout the river system in years to come,” She said.

“We’re also seeing fish being caught in more than one location, indicating a diversity and breadth of the population and another positive indicator that we will see more upward migration through the fishway for years to come.”

RECENT fish surveys in the Thomson River have seen the highest catch rates of the Tupong since targeted surveys began in 2004.

Environmental Water Resource officer with the West Gippsland Catchment Authority Dr Stephanie Suter says this is a fantastic outcome.

“This is another good result and continues the steady increase we have seen in fish populations over a number of years,” Dr Suter said.

These fish surveys were conducted by a team from the Authur Rhylah Institute and Austral Research in early February and saw increases in both Tulong and Australian Grayling, both species that have been listed as vulnerable in recent years.

Dr Suter explains some of the factors leading to these results.

“Wet conditions combined with multiple years of targeted environmental flows from the Thomson Dam has certainly played a big part in allowing this lift in numbers, “ she said.

“The maintenance of baseflows and large freshening flows mimicking those that have occurred naturally provides an environment to all sorts of aquatic life, including these particular fish.”

The constructed fishway at the Horseshoe Bend Tunnel site in 2019 has also had a dramatic effect on this rise, as it has allowed migratory fish such as the Grayling to move up to the river’s upper reaches.

AliVe decide against legal action

A COMMUNITY group opposed to a controversial Hazelwood North used lead acid battery recycling plant has decided not to go ahead with legal proceedings against the development.

ALiVe had sought legal advice from a Queens Counsel to examine any legal avenues to stop the plant from being built.

AliVe secretary Maggie Jones said the QC had discussed a range of legal angles, including the significance of the size of the plant and impacts on the community.

“After weighing up the options, we decided not to proceed, we had to consider the financial risks as well as the emotional costs to the community

Power station incident assessed WORKSAFE is assessing a significant incident at the Yallourn Power Station which occurred about a week ago involving a pulverising mill.

EnergyAustralia head of Yallourn Julian Turecek said the mill, associated with unit one had “failed” on March 20 at about 11.20am.

Mr Turecek said the incident did not interrupt electricity supply and no one was injured.

“Importantly, our people are safe and no one was harmed. Our first priority was to make the work area safe and now we are working through the cause,” Mr Turecek said.

“Yallourn power station has four generating units. Each one has eight pulverised fuel mills that serve the purpose of accepting and pulverising raw coal that’s used in the process of generating electricity.”

Mr Turecek said EnergyAustralia immediately notified WorkSafe and the company is planning on “fully supporting them with their assessment”.

EnergyAustralia had announced earlier this month that it was closing Yallourn in mid-2028, four years earlier than its original scheduled closing date.

“We feel the justice system is unfairly weighted against the community, we would have had to raise significant amounts of money to action a court case and put ourselves at financial risk if we lost.”

AliVe had come up with $20,000 within a week from a community fundraising campaign earlier this month to engage the legal advice from a QC. Ms Jones said the success of the fundraising campaign “reflected the community’s ongoing opposition” to the used lead acid battery plant.

“It was amazing. People were donating from as little as five dollars to as high as $1000, people were giving what they could,” she said.

“We were trying not to leave any stones unturned

so we could make the best informed decision as possible. But people were appreciative and they understood why we didn’t proceed.”

It comes after the Planning Minister Richard Wynne stepped in to approve the planning application after it was rejected by Latrobe City Council, but was awaiting an upcoming VCAT hearing.

Latrobe City had sought its own legal advice on pursuing a judicial review of the ministerial approval, but decided not to go ahead with it at a meeting held behind closed doors.

Ms Jones said the community group would continue its opposition to the plant, as well as continuing to take the issue up with state ministers and local Members of Parliament.

“We are not going away, we are looking at some

direct actions like holding a rally.We will continue to advocate for the community,” she said.

“And we will continue to ask who is benefitting from this, as it’s not benefitting us.”

Company Chunxing is planning to process 50,000 tonnes of used lead acid batteries to 28,000 tonnes of refined lead a year at a plant of Fourth Road.

The company has rigorously defended the safety and environmental credentials of the development, which had gained Environment Protection Authority approvals.

Chunxing is in the midst of forming a community reference group.

Missing man from Churchill Police Beat with Zac Standish

MORWELL police are asking for public assistance to help locate missing person Daniel Schuler.

Reported missing from his home in Churchill at 1:20pm on Thursday, there is concern for his welfare.

He was said to have been giving away personal items to family members and left his mobile phone behind.

Described as a 33-year-old Caucasian man standing at five foot nine, he was last known to be wearing a dark beanie, dark jacket, boots, jeans and possibly an orange hi-visibility work jumper.

Daniel is known to have connections in Ballarat.

Anybody that may know of his whereabouts is encouraged to phone their closest police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

MAJOR Collision Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man following a fatal motorcycle collision in Fulham late last year.

A 58-year-old man has been charged with dangerous driving causing death, careless

driving and failing to give way.

The Cape Paterson man was bailed to appear before Sale Magistrates’ Court on March 29.

The charges follow an incident at the intersection of Hopkins Rd and the Princes Highway where a car and motorcycle collided about 10.30am on November 17.

The motorbike rider, a 62-year-old Bairnsdale man, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries where he later died.

Reminder to stay safe on roads following wild weather

AFTER heavy downpours last week in the Latrobe Valley, it appears the worst may have passed.

On Wednesday flood warnings were issued to Traralgon, Traralgon South, Callignee, Jeeralang, Loy Yang, Hazelwood North and Traralgon Creek, with the local SES receiving 37 calls for assistance in just 12 hours from Tuesday afternoon.

It is understood water levels on local rivers have now peaked.

SES region manager assistant chief officer for region east Anthony McLean urged motorists to seek caution.

“Our biggest reminder would be to not drive into water that you can’t see - if you can’t see the bottom of the water, don’t drive in,” he said.

Check for unclaimed superannuation GIPPSLANDERS hard earned wages are waiting to be claimed, in the form of lost and unclaimed superannuation.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said there is $40 million of lost and unclaimed superannuation in Gippsland, money that workers may not even know they are missing.

“I encourage Gippslanders to log into their MyGov account and check for lost super with the ATO, just a few clicks could boost your super balance,” Mr Chester said.

“Lost superannuation refers to inactive accounts and ones that have lost contact with their fund member.

“Workers may have a lost or unclaimed super amount if they have changed their name, moved jobs or changed addresses or forgotten to update details with their super fund in the last few years.”

Mr Chester said by law, the fund is required to transfer certain accounts to the ATO, which then becomes ‘unclaimed super money’.

“Unlike superannuation funds, the ATO does not charge fees, and thanks to reforms passed by the federal government, proactively consolidates any unclaimed super into an eligible, active super account where possible,” he said.

“Thanks to actions taken by the federal government, $7 billion has already been reunited with

workers, but with $13.8 billion still waiting it is worth taking the time to check.”

Data released by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) for the financial year ending June 2020 shows that the federal government’s reforms have had a big impact, reducing unclaimed super by $7 billion compared to June 30 2019.

The government’s ‘Protecting Your Super’ reforms have resulted in the ATO proactively reuniting more Australians with their lost and unclaimed super.

Anzac story horses wanted

THE 13th Gippsland Light Horse Ceremonial Troop is looking for horses to take on for a long term free lease to help commemorate Australia’s war history.

The ceremonial troop needs horses to take part in East Gippsland Anzac and Remembrance day parades, as well as visiting senior citizens centres, retirement villages and schools.

Troop captain John Couzens is looking across Gippsland and the Latrobe Valley for the right types of horses, which he promised, would become part of the family and help keep Australian history alive.

“When people see us ride in our authentic saddles and uniforms, it means the memory of these light horsemen will never die. The only reference we have of them is in sepia photographs,” Cpt Couzens said.

The Metung-based troop began in 2011 and now has 18 members, but many of their horses have been retired out to pasture and they needed new mounts.

The troop is looking for any breed of quiet, seasoned all-rounder from 10 to 20 years-of age and between 14 and 15.3 hands-high to practice single file, half section and full section drills.

The horses would be taken on a one-month trial and would live on a 35 acre property in Metung, where the owners could come and visit them.

Cpn Couzens said one troop member was looking for a packhorse to carry medical panniers to pay homage to his grandfather who was a medic at the charge of the wells of Beersheba.

“Many pony club horses have been ridden in pairs or lines and this is exactly what the lighthorse did. It’s just a matter of getting the right quiet and clam horse,” he said.

“They can’t be green as we don’t have the time to bring them on. We have one horse being delivered, he is a beautiful standardbred.”

The original lighthorse mount - the Australian Waler - can be traced back to the First Fleet and

was developed as a sturdy type suited to the rugged Aussie bush.

Australia sent 136,000 horses overseas in World War I but only one came home, Sandy whose hide was mounted and kept at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

Cpt Couzens said his horses were a hit with the public and put a smile on the faces at schools and senior citizens centres.

He cited one 92-year-old woman in a Paynesville retirement village who had broken in lighthorse remounts.

“Within 30 seconds we hoisted her up on a horse and her smile was ear-to-ear, the staff were in tears. She hadn’t been on a horse in 40 years,” he said.

A PARLIAMENTARY inquiry into Victoria’s struggling tourism and events sectors is seeking written submissions from individuals, community and business operators.

Member for Eastern Victoria Region, Melina Bath, who lobbied for the inquiry, said the COVID-19 pandemic and the state government’s handling of restrictions had a profound impact on tourism and the events industry right across the eastern Victoria region.

“Many Victorian tourism and events operators have been seriously struggling to get back on their feet,” Ms Bath said.

“Local businesses have detailed to me the significant financial and mental pressures they have suffered throughout COVID. “Many businesses were forced to hibernate with great uncertainty around the prospect of work.

“This inquiry gives these businesses and their employees a platform to share their experiences and challenges, providing direction for support.

“It’s necessary to listen and learn so meaningful and targeted industry support can be designed and delivered.

“Tourism and events frustratingly faced the heaviest restrictions of all in Victoria during the pandemic.”

Prior to the pandemic Victorian tourism was valued at over $2.5 billion a month, making up 7.8 per cent of the state’s workforce. The industry supported 142,300 jobs in Melbourne and 110,000 in regional Victoria.

Ms Bath said job losses in the tourism and events industry were widespread and regional Victoria was disproportionally impacted.

“Tourism is such a big part of the eastern Victoria region. Gippsland, Phillip Island, Mornington Peninsula and the Yarra Valley all suffered greatly throughout COVID despite their rural and remote locations,” Ms Bath said.

“The third state wide snap lockdown had serious consequences for regional businesses who were just beginning to attempt to recover and reboot their businesses.

“Many found it incredibly difficult to accept regional restrictions and job losses caused

by Victoria’s substandard hotel quarantine program in metropolitan Melbourne.

“It’s vitally important to support the regional tourism and events industry to get people back to work and back in business.”

Architects appointed STUDENTS at Churchill North Primary School and Hazelwood North Primary School are a step closer to getting the facilities they need for a great start in life, with an architect appointed to design the school’s exciting upgrade.

Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing recently announced that Studio B Architects has been appointed to design Churchill North Primary school’s $3.448 million upgrade to the school’s C and D blocks.

Furthermore, MSM & Associates has been appointed to design Hazelwood North Primary School’s $2.718 million upgrade, which will

modernise the school and include upgrades to block A and the toilet block.

Ms Shing welcomed the news, saying it was a great boost for local students, teachers and parents.

“We’re continuing to invest in new and upgraded school infrastructure in the Valley, so that our schools have the best facilities, our classrooms have the best teachers, and every student is given every chance to succeed,” she said.

“Families in Churchill and Hazelwood North are now a step closer to getting the modern, accessible, and fit-for-purpose facilities that students deserve to thrive.”

Strong 2020 for building industry GIPPSLAND’S building industry had a strong year in 2020, with building permit approvals rising by almost 24 per cent despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) issued 8348 permits in the region in 2020, up from 6750 in 2019. It was the biggest increase in approvals in regional Victoria, suggesting more people are moving to the region.

Statewide, the industry finished 2020 off strong, with the number of building permits issued across Victoria back above pre-pandemic levels, and the highest permit approvals of the last two decades.

The VBA issued 10 per cent more building permits in 2020, 113,430 up from 101,998 the previous year. Even with a pandemic, 2020 saw the highest number of building permit approvals in the last 23 years.

VBA chief executive Sue Eddy said the industry was resilient and the building and construction sector would continue to be paramount to economic recovery.

“Last year was unprecedented. This year we all need to continue to adapt and collaborate, even more than we have, to help industry flourish and our economy recover,” she said.

In the first quarter of this financial year, building permits issued with a Building Permit Number were 13 per cent higher than the same period in 2019-20.

Unsurprisingly, mid-year data showed that there had been a drop in permit applications during

áŭŎł¾ĦłÝăğ¾łŮ Ęăŧăğ÷͓ áŧáłŮݾŮ

the lockdown.

Domestic and residential buildings, which make up the majority of all building applications, fell to around 13 per cent and 12 per cent respectively in April, and 10 per cent and 11 per cent respectively in August. Despite this, they rebounded in September and continued to grow for the rest of the year.

Ms Eddy said new life will be breathed back into the industry with the federal government’s HomeBuilder Grant Scheme and the state government’s $5.3 billion Big Housing Build.

The HomeBuilder scheme has generated over 25,000 applications from Victoria as of February 26. The majority being for new builds 20,726 and 4707 for renovations.

“We expect to see these numbers increase with the extension of the grant to March 31. The flow on effect will be felt by many in the industry as the work commences,” Ms Eddy said.

“The HomeBuilder scheme and Victoria’s Big Housing Build will supercharge our economic recovery through the pandemic and beyond.

“The stimulus packages are a reflection of the federal and state government’s confidence in the building and construction industry helping the economic recovery.

“More than ever, we must all work together to deliver the compliance and safety outcomes that the public not only expect but are entitled to.”

Royal mail lands in Traralgon

TRARALGON teenager Sophie Goodwin received a great thrill recently, with a letter from Windsor Castle landing in her mailbox.

THE 13 year old had written to The Queen in November, wishing her and the Royal Family a merry Christmas.

Sophie said it was something of a shock to receive a reply relatively quickly.

“I was actually quite surprised, especially with COVID and everything,” she said.

“I’ve always liked The Queen and like the history of the Royal Family.

“Just being able to write a letter to her, even if I don’t get a reply, I like being able to talk to her.”

It was the second letter Sophie had sent Windsor Castle, and the Royal Family has replied on both occasions.

The Queen was receptive of Sophie’s well wishes, and her reply was signed by

Lady-in-Waiting Jennifer Gordon Lennox.

As well as letters, Sophie also has a number of Royal Crown coins left to her by her grandfather.

Sophie hopes to travel to the United Kingdom one day to visit Buckingham Palace.

Those who would like to send a letter to The Queen can do by addressing correspondence to: Her Majesty The Queen, Buckingham Palace, London SW1A 1AA. It is estimated The Queen receives 300 letters a day.

The Queen is shown almost all of her correspondence on a daily basis by one of her private secretaries.

Traditionally, those wishing to write a formal letter open with ‘Madam’ and close the letter with the form ‘I have the honour to be, Madam, Your Majesty’s humble and obedient servant’. As a constitutional Monarch, The Queen does not intervene in any political or personal disputes, and letters asking her to do so will receive a standard reply to this effect.

Building momentum for off leash dog park YINNAR dog lovers are being invited to slate interest in creating a new off-leash pooch park in town.

Local woman Jan Holt is looking for expressions of interest from those keen on a communal space to allow their beloved puppers off for some free time.

The Yinnar servo owner has a seven-month-old “spoilt rotten” border collie named Riley who comes to work with her and has become a hit with the locals.

“I was out with my dog the other day and we came across another person with their dog and we let them play. They had the best time ever and it was beautiful to watch,” Ms Holt said.

“It’s so healthy for dogs to be socialised and will lead to a happier dog. If they are not socialised properly they won’t know how to relate to other dogs,.”

Ms Holt said the idea for an off-leash park had been floated on Facebook and had gained a heap of interest from locals.

She said if there was enough interest, she would discuss it with the relevant authorities to take it to the next step and find a bit of land around town to potentially set it up.

Ms Holt said it would also go well with the town’s new overnight RV stop to let travelling dogs have a run around.

“I’ve thought of this for a while and we’ve had heaps of positive comments. I don’t think it would take much to set up. But it’s still in the early stages,” she said.

“We have a heap of new families moving into town and the closet dog park is in Traralgon.”

Crazy socks for World Down Syndrome Day

WORLD Down Syndrome Day is a topic that is close to the hearts of all educators and children at Little Saints Early Learning Centre, which has branches in Moe and Traralgon.

The centres are this year involved in the education of resident T21 champion Nathaniel.

While Nathaniel has attended the service for a number of years now, this year he is moving mountains in the preschool Support: Resident T21 program and is building the champion Nathaniel. most beautiful friendships.

To prepare for World Down Syndrome Day, the centre shared posters and signs about wearing crazy socks on Friday, March 19.

Classrooms began decorating sock pictures to display throughout the service.

As anticipation about wearing crazy socks grew and children and families learnt what the cause was, the centre said it was wonderful to have families sharing stories of T21 champions in their lives outside Little Saints.

STUDENTS from Kosciuszko Street Primary School, Traralgon, celebrated Harmony Week recently. Throughout the week students participated in a range of activities focussing on inclusiveness, respect and belonging.

Children brainstormed ways they could assist in making a generational change to eliminate discrimination and promote equal rights for all who live within Australia.

On the Thursday, children and staff dressed in orange.

Orange represents social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect.

Principal Chelsea Granger said the school yard “was like a sea of orange, and that it was wonderful to see so many students and staff supporting the cause”.

In their art lessons, students created a collaborative mural focussing on the importance of supporting and respecting others.

Surrounding the Harmony Day message ‘Everyone Belongs’, were small framed self-portraits drawn by middle unit students and orange and white origami doves created by the senior students with messages of hope written within the wings.

The junior unit created colourful lanterns that were displayed within classrooms and the front entrance of the school.

The Foundation children negotiated team-building games, such as egg and spoon races, tunnel-ball and sack races, before preparing healthy fruit kebabs and chocolate crackles for their afternoon tea.

“I loved the sack races’’ said Peppah. “My favourite was making the chocolate crackles,” Hugo said.

The grade 1 and 2 students extended their stay to include

pizza for dinner.

They began the afternoon by changing into casual clothes and participating in various small group tasks.

Gina said “It was so fun making our own afternoon tea in the staffroom”.

Cianna enjoyed making structures out of mini marshmallows and uncooked spaghetti.

“It was tricky at the start, and then I worked it out, making smaller triangles inside my structure made it stronger,” Henry said.

The junior camps program is the first step in preparing the students for overnight camps from year 3.

Say hello to Zoe from Moe

SOME nicknames or monikers just stick, and for one Moe assistance dog, that is well and truly the case.

Fred Little has had his assistance dog for a few years now, and in that time the Poodle-Jack Russell mix has become affectionately known as ‘Zoe from Moe’.

With a name that rolls off the tongue, Zoe helps Mr Little’s mental health in his day-to-day life.

“It has been great to have her support, especially over the last year,” he said.

“She goes everywhere with me.”

Mr Little is not exaggerating when he says Zoe does indeed go everywhere with him.

Zoe travels with Mr Little to the supermarket, doctors appointments and the post office, and has traveled on all modes of transport from a bus, train and even a plane.

Zoe has been in the family for six years and was originally registered to Mr Little’s now deceased wife.

Since being transferred to Mr Little, the ‘Zoe from Moe’ tag came about after a move to the town just on 12 months ago.

“People ask ‘what is your dogs name?’, and I say ‘what town are we in?’ Mr Little said.

“They then say ‘Moe’, and I say ‘well this is Zoe from Moe’”.

Zoe is trained every year to keep her assistance dog accreditation, and must complete tasks such as reacting calmly to strangers or waiting one minute before crossing the street.

Assistance dogs have become a great asset to helping people such as Mr Little due to their nonjudgmental demeanour.

Zoe has reaped the rewards of becoming a minor Moe celebrity, so much so she is often given free slices of ham at the local deli.

Big Sound Small Halls in Mirboo North

TO help bring live music back into our small halls, South Gippsland Shire Council is hosting “Big Sound Small Halls” – a series of live music events that will run from now until 30 June.

The first two events on the program feature talented musician Jack Botts, who offers a unique folk sound with strong, thought-provoking lyrics.

He has spent the last 18 months on the road across Australia and has supported performers such as Tash Sultana, Pierce Brothers and Ash Grunwald.

With a down-to-earth style and natural charm, Jack is sure to delight local audiences.

Jack will be performing on Friday, April 9 at the Mirboo North Hall and Saturday, April 10 at Tarwin Lower.

Jack will be supported by local musician Janie Gordon at both events and by Wilson Blackley at Mirboo North.

The Mirboo North event is being delivered in partnership with Mirboo North Arts.

SOME of the Walhalla Goldfields Railway’s older volunteers have retired.

If you are a mechanic, plumber, welder, electrician, carpenter, painter, gardener, fitter and turner in fact people from all trades are very much needed at Walhalla Goldfields Railway.

Walhalla Goldfields Railway is always on the lookout for new volunteer trades and handy people to assist with the construction of a Self-Propelled Railmotor, restoration and regauging of two exQueensland Railways Diesel Locomotives, Carriage and Locomotive maintenance, installation of new track work and signalling.

Ideally applicants would hold appropriate qualifications, but handy people are also needed.

You will work as part of a team (who will quickly become friends) and remuneration is by way of the satisfaction of being part of history as they make memories for the many visitors to the railway.

For young unemployed people (volunteering and working with a team) could be a stepping stone with future employment in the community.

The Sqn. was based firstly at Yallourn and then the Newborough Army Depots.

The reunion will be held on Saturday, April 24 at the Morwell RSL. As part of the reunion the attendees will march on Anzac Day with the Morwell RSL at their main parade.

AT the March 2021 Annual General Meeting of the Moe Probus Club, members celebrated the 30th anniversary of the club’s formation.

Morwell Croquet Club

since January 1. Riding and driving off-road can cause soil erosion and damage native vegetation. The ecosystems in our forests are fragile and vehicles can destroy wildlife habitat.

Authorised officers are patrolling key locations across the state, targeting illegal trail bike and four-wheel driving activity, and on the spot fines of $165 apply.

The maximum fine for riding or driving on closed roads is $3300, while damaging wildlife habitat can result in a fine of more than $8000.

Most riders and drivers do the right thing by following normal road rules that apply on public land.

DURING the month of March, the club will be conducting twilight meetings on Tuesdays between 6pm-7.30pm.

Come and join them for some gentle exercise, mental stimulation and lots of laughs.

$100,000 raised for flood victims in less than a day

JPs return to Traralgon

LOCAL Justice of the Peace have recommenced their duties at Traralgon Police Station.

JPs have traditionally provided a document signing station as a community service, however this had to be stopped due to COVID-19 restrictions.

As well as a voluntary community service, the document signing station assists in reducing the workload of local police officers.

JPs will be available each Tuesday and Thursday at Traralgon Police Station from the hours of 11am to 2pm.

MOE/NEWBOROUGH Keenagers Table Tennis Club are looking to attract new players interested in table tennis.

Keenagers play at Latrobe Leisure Centre, Old Sale Road, Newborough.

Sessions are on Monday and Thursday from 9.30am to 11.30am.

Sessional fees are $3 and insurance is $10 annually.

Keenagers is set up to promote recreational table tennis for older residents and retirees in the Moe/Newborough area, having benefits deriving from this activity in a friendly social setting.

Walhalla Art Show at Easter

SELFLESS donors have quickly heeded the call to help flood-affected farmers, with Rural Aid’s appeal raising more than $100,000, in less than 24 hours.

Rural Aid chief executive officer John Warlters said he was blown away by the instant and generous response from everyday Aussies, after appealing for donations on Tuesday morning.

“It’s really humbling to see people donating their hard-earned money to help farmers who’ve been battered by yet another natural disaster,” Mr Warlters said.

“We’d like to take this chance to thank our generous supporters for their amazing contributions. Every dollar makes a difference.

“I’m always amazed by how quickly and generously Aussies go about helping each other in times of need.”

Rural Aid acknowledges that the full impact of the floods, and the needs of those affected, are still being realised. As the disaster unfolds, Rural Aid is offering eligible flood-affected farmers a one-off, $1000 payment. Rural Aid’s qualified counsellors are also providing free mental wellbeing support, and the charity’s disaster assistance team is also welcoming requests for hay.

Mr Warlters said the money will make a huge difference in farmers’ lives.

“The money raised so far could help at least 100 families get back on their feet after these devastating floods.

“But we’d love to be able to help even more farmers. If you have a few dollars to spare, please consider donating to Rural Aid’s flood appeal,” Mr Warlters said.

“And if you’re a farmer now facing a huge cleanup, damaged property or ruined hay supplies, please register with Rural Aid to find out what support you could be eligible for.”

Illegal trail bike riding on the rise

VICTORIA’S parks, forests and reserves have become more popular than ever for trail bike riding and four-wheel-driving over the last 12 months, and while there is an extensive network of roads and tracks open to the public, illegal off-road activity is increasing.

The Conservation Regulator has issued more than 100 infringements for off-road vehicle use by trail bike riders and four-wheel-drivers

AS part of VicHealth’s Everyday Creativity Program, Baw Baw Shire Council and Arts and Health Gippsland are coordinating the Live – Well, Come – Share (Stories) project.

As part of the project, 10 small scale art projects will be delivered with mentoring from local artist Bec Van Dyk, Director Arts and Health Gippsland, and council’s Arts and Culture team.

Through the project, local community groups will have the opportunity to work alongside an artist to share the stories behind their group and develop artwork throughout the process.

Each project will be documented in small films that will be shared online and via projections in community spaces throughout the region.

The project will be delivered by council and Arts and Health Gippsland in partnership with Baw Baw Arts Alliance, Latrobe Community Health Service and West Gippsland Libraries.

Men’s shed helps Clifton Creek VOLUNTEERS of the Traralgon Men’s Shed constructed and delivered items for Clifton Creek recently.

Clifton Creek, located north of Bairnsdale, had approximately 60 homes affected by the 2019/2020 fires.

Traralgon Men’s Shed secretary and treasurer Lyn Matthews said it was great to be involved in such an initiative.

“Bench seats, adult and children sized picnic tables, cutting boards and other items were transported by Willaton Transport and donated to the Clifton Creek community,” she explained.

“The Shed contributed funds for the barbecue held during the community working bee at the community recreation grounds. The community were thrilled by the donation of items and the barbecue.

“This project was a way of assisting a number of individuals and the community of fire affected areas of East Gippsland, and also provide a meaningful project for members of the Shed.”

Traralgon Men’s Shed will also make items for the Sarsfield area. Delivery to Sarsfield is planned for mid May 2021.

The Traralgon Men’s Shed offers individuals a place to engage with hands on activities and to interact with others, and by doing so, develop a sense of meaning and value around the process of completing projects in the shed.

Through shared experiences in the shed, members make friends, build a network of emotional support and develop a sense of belonging - all of which facilitate a willingness to communicate often uncommon in men.The health and wellbeing aspect of the Men’s Shed is perhaps its greatest benefit.

Traralgon Men’s Shed is located 5 Howitt St, and is open to men and women Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8am to 3pm.

Jaz salutes the ANZACS MORWELL musical theatre star Jaz Flowers will headline an upcoming show in tribute to the Anzacs.

Salute to the Anzacs will play at the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre, Traralgon, showcasing the many hit songs, stories, and indeed laughter that came from both World Wars and the Vietnam War, all in front of a backdrop of incredible images on the big screen.

Songs by artists such as Dame Vera Lynn, The Andrew Sisters, Bob Dylan and Normie Rowe will feature, as well as stirring version of Bring Him Home from Les Miserables.

Jaz will be joined by fellow Morwell artist Alison Jones, tenor Roy Best, Caroline Vercoe from Opera Australia, Chris McKenna as narrator and William Schmidt as musical director on piano.

The production is dedicated to the brave men and women who gave of their lives in service of our country, and Jaz said all involved were keen to bring the show to life on stage.

“It is an extremely rewarding show to perform for people who appreciate the music of the time,” she said.

“We’re very excited to be performing at the little theatre before it shuts. So many of us performed there as kids and to do one last performance before they knock it down is pretty cool.”

Salute to the Anzacs will play at the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre, Traralgon on Tuesday, April 6.

TRAFALGAR Holden Museum is opening a new exhibition today showcasing the heritage of the Aussie brand just in time for the Easter long weekend.

Holden museum president Neil Joiner said it was about giving people an idea of where Holden came from.

“A lot of people think back in the early days that Holden started as a motor car manufacturer in 1948 but that’s actually very far from the truth, they started off in 1859 and started bodying cars and motorcycles from about 1910,” Mr Joiner said.

“So it’s all about showcasing this fantastic history.”

Mr Joiner said visitors can expect to be transported back to life in the late 1800s, and see artefacts and heritage items.

“The [public] will get a general overview of what life was like back in the 1800s and the general products that were being made at that time from a leather workers point of view,” Mr Joiner said.

“I think the highlight of the exhibit is the actual Holden bits we’ve got in there, we’ve got horse saddles and examples of all the leather work they manufactured at the time.

“The exhibit will show the versatility of the company and the amazing things it has produced.”

Tourism boost for Gippsland

THE sights and attractions of the region were on display at the weekend when Destination Gippsland released its tourism magazine.

A 16-page spread filled with photos of the area’s greatest attractions aims to boost tourism through region and reach 326,000 homes across the Melbourne metropolitan area.

Destination Gippsland chief executive Terry Robinson said it was important to promote the area to a large audience.

“Tourism is a major employer and major economic driver for Gippsland so promoting the area to get visitors back will make a huge difference to jobs, businesses and the overall economy,” Mr Robisnson said.

Mr Robinson said COVID-19 prevented tourists from pumping much needed funds into the economy.

“COVID has had a significant impact,” he said.

“Last year we had 1.8 million less visitors to Gippsland because of the pandemic, so we’ve got a lot of work to do to encourage people to

come back and recover that lost expenditure and boost our local economy.

“The best way for small businesses to recover is to have customers, to have visitors coming to the region and spending money in their retail shops or staying in their accommodation, so we are doing everything we can to support them through these times.”

Mr Robinson said the Latrobe Valley would feature heavily throughout the magazine.

“The magazine covers pretty much every part of Gippsland. The Valley will be featured prominently in there as well as all other parts of the region,” he said.

Mr Robinson said it was the start of a new marketing campaign encourage people from Melbourne and regional Victoria to visit Gippsland.

“It [the magazine] is part of an overall marketing campaign we will be doing all year,” he said.

“There is a lot to see and a lot of great experiences, but it will also help our communities, so we just want to get the word out about how wonderful the area is and that we are ready for visitors.”

Historic premiership for Yarram, Imps win thriller Instant success: Yarram and District celebrate winning the B Grade premiership in its inaugural season in the TDCA. CRICKET TDCA

YARRAM and District Cricket Club made history after winning a B Grade premiership in their inaugural season as a fully formed club in the Traralgon District Cricket Association.

Weather caused issues at the start of play on Saturday and with the wicket having interrupted preparation throughout the week there was a lot of anticipation when the toss went up.

Yarram won, and sent Ex Students in but it soon became clear that the wicket was a good one and that the bowlers would still have to work hard to get wickets.

The start didn’t go to plan for the Sharks though and they were left reeling at 6/44 after a fiery Kelly Griffiths spell with the new ball.

It wasn’t until Jack Robertson came to the crease that Ex Students showed their traditional flare with the bat as he took it up to the Yarram bowlers and stopped letting them dictate play, making 36 from 49 balls before being dismissed late on Saturday evening.

Sunday rolled around and Ex Students resumed at 7/97 but they still had Daniel Churchill at the crease who is a proven performer.

The tactic though was a little confusing as it seemed as if they were only interested in batting

time rather than trying to score as Churchill and Kade Duncan put on 20 with both batsmen facing 100 balls each.

Ex Students lost their last two wickets for hardly any and ended up being all out for 113.

Yarram and District were in the box seat but Ex Students determination saw them take it right up to the Yarram batsmen.

At 4/42 the wheels started to wobble and when Dylan Rash was dismissed with the score on 5/58 the Sharks were circling.

Anthony Bland, Trent Crawford and Peter Griffiths steadied the ship though and were able to guide the Pelicans home with two wickets in hand.

Yarram and District’s first premiership was incredibly well earnt considering the powerhouse they were up against.

Ex Students premiership streak in second grade came to an end after winning an amazing eight in a row which is a brilliant achievement.

Kelly Griffiths was named man of the match for his five wicket haul which set up the game for the Pelicans and no doubt the town of Yarram will be buzzing for quite a while celebrating this superb victory.

AN amazing game of C Grade cricket between Imperials and Ex Students took place on Sunday after the match was postponed due to Saturdays bad weather.

Ex Students won the toss and batted and

although they started out cautiously due to some very good and tight bowling from Imperials, they were still able to climb to a good score of 150, being dismissed in the 40th over.

Proven performer Paul Hennessy was the best for the Sharks as he compiled a fine 56, while Nick O’Brien was the next best with 22.

Imperials bowled well and shared the wickets but Jordan Anderson was the standout as he took 4/14 from his eight overs.

Imperials were cruising at 3/106 but they lost three quick wickets and with no score added the jitters started to show.

It then got worse as Josh Jennings was dismissed with the score on 126 and then two more wickets fell to have the score on 9/142 with Imperials needing nine more to win.

The stage was set for a hero and a hero delivered as Mick McNulty with ice water in his veins hit two fours on his way to nine not out to guide his team home in a pulse racing match.

Man of the match was awarded to Jennings who made a blistering 68 which included two massive sixes with the next best being Daniel Elms on 24.

Darien Millington bowled beautifully for Ex Students claiming four wickets as did Nick O’Brien who snared 2/9 himself.

LAST week saw Gippstar announce their award winners for the months of November and December 2020, showcasing some of the region’s most exceptional sporting talents.

Claiming the junior award for the month of November was Traralgon’s Ashley Nicholes for his outstanding achievements in swimming.

Competing in the Queensland state championships, Nicholes claimed six medals including four gold and two silvers.

The highlight was his performance in the 100 metre freestyle event, where he broke a Victorian country record.

The awards also recognised footballer Megan Fitzsimons, from Sale, who was drafted with pick 35 to Melbourne in the 2020 AFLW in November’s open category.

Stratford’s Cohen Wade took out the junior award for December for his efforts in tetrathlon/ modern pentathlon.

WHILE grand final day started with morning rain it was not a problem for West Gippsland Bowls Division as all games were scheduled to be played indoors at Traralgon and under the domes at Morwell.

It was excellent conditions for players and spectators alike who were able to experience top quality bowls in a pleasant environment away from the intermittent rain.

DIVISION ONE TRARALGON shot away to an early lead against Newborough at Morwell.

Newborough pegged them back before gaining the upper hand and maintained a buffer over Traralgon for the remainder of the game to repeat their victory of last year and revenge for their narrow loss in the semi-final.

Nosha Michaels and his rink of Charlie Ward, Jo-Anne Michaels and George Lambos had a great return to form with a match winning 33-13 win over Traralgon stalwart Matt Ferrari and his rink of Derek Hewling, Ian Hilsley and Will McIlwain.

They were assisted by Kevin Lovett and his team of Brian Carpenter, Rod Lewis and Neale Houston who won 25-22 over the previously undefeated rink of Michael Yacoub and his team of Ron Sherlock, Pat Trewin and Phil Mustoe.

After the match, bowlers were talking about how well Brian Carpenter led on the day to give Lovett a flying start.

James Scullin and his rink of Chris Ward, Abe Roeder and Vin McIlwain were the best Traralgon rink, winning 20-15 over Paul Sherman and his rink of Tony Knipping, Barry Daley and Scott Jones.

Wayne Lynch and his rink of Kevin Enguell, Shane Chapman and Ian Kirkup won 21-12 over Alan Grubb and his rink of Bob Goldie, Ryan Marston and Craig Thornton.

Newborough goes on to play South Gippsland Bowls Division winners Inverloch on April 10 at Korumburra to determine the Strzelecki region champion and a place in the State Champion Pennant team finals at Moama later in the year.

NEWBOROUGH 85 DEFEATED TRARALGON 76.

DIVISION TWO THERE was a rematch of the interrupted semi final which saw Moe score a win when the match resumed.

Morwell came to Traralgon determined to win and return to division one.

Moe had other ideas and were firmly focused on gaining a win and a return to division one where they have been a fixture for many years with a proud history.

Young gun Jayde Leech and his team of Col Carmichael, Jan Rudy and Banger Harvey got the ball rolling for Moe with a stunning 39-8 victory over Ron Lyfield and his well performed rink of Chris Goldsbrough, Brian Kingsley and Shashi Bhatti.

Ian Caines and his rink of Bob Rennie, John Wasiukiewicz and Alex Muirhead turned the tables in a return match of their victory last week.

Steve Collins and his rink of Laurie Melhuish, Russell Williams and John Osborne won 37-26.

Sandy Caines and his rink of Rohan Willcock, David Mander and Barry Hawkett continued their good work for Moe last week for a 33-14 successive win over Nathan Cook and his rink of Wayne Bishop, Keith Gadsby and Michael Weatherall.

The lone Morwell winner was David Cook and his team of Bernie Detering, Mike Arnold and Darren Cullen with a 39-15 win over Stuart Caines and his rink of Les Stolarik, Michael Smogavec and Ted Kuklinsky.

It was not enough to bridge the gap and Moe had a resounding victory and a triumphant return to division one.

AT Morwell, Traralgon (3) reversed their semi final result over Thorpdale.

Once more Bob Dykstra and his rink of Jedd Ladgrove, Elaine Swan and Max Cuming led the way with a 32-11 win over Brendan Jennings and his rink of Alan McLure, Darron Fraser and Denis Gunn.

May Cross and her rink of Alan Keam, John Kong and David Karsky had a 24-18 win over Ben Powell and his rink of Ian Simpson, Ron Mackie and David Ferguson.

Norbert Schroeter and his rink of Jim Wilson, Greg Swan and Roger Davey had a 23-18 win over Ross Kennedy and his rink of Wendy Jennings, Ross Pethybridge and Shane Chambers.

Danny Vanzuylen and his rink of Brian O’Connell, Graeme Edwards and Scott Jennings was the lone Thorpdale winner with a 26-19 win over Trevor James and his rink of Matt Ogilvie, Brian Johnson and Ian Wills.

Michael Holroyd and his rink of Josh Kennedy, Maurie Ludlow and Heather Mooney won 40-9 over Sam Mazza and his rink of Lionel Deane, Ross McDermott and Kevin McLaren.

Peter Policha and his rink of Marcia Evans, Wayne Russell and Chris Cunningham won 24-21 over Jarrod Grigg and his rink of Trevor Griffin, Gordon Wright and Bevan Romans.

Richard Polmear and his rink of Pam Jones, David Swingler and Harry Langres were the lone Yarragon winners with a 23-19 win over Eagle Edwards with his rink of Mary Whelan, Carmel Goss and Vern Verhagen.

DIVISION FIVE THE match at Morwell resulted in Newborough (4) and Morwell Club (2) being tied at the allotted 75 ends.

This was the second extra end playoff in a row for Newborough (4) and they managed to win with skipper Jim Cuthbertson not bowling his last bowl as Newborough (4) held an unbeatable lead if he did not upset the head.

Cuthbertson and his team of Kevin Myrteza, Peter Wonnacott and Ann-Mary Ryan won 28-24 over Beryl Noblett and her team of Alan Campbell, Stan Morgan and Sue Karleusa.

Ken Bechaz and his rink of Ruth Verhagen, Lyn Madden and Wally Bechaz drew three shots on the playoff end to tie the score 24 all with Alan Shepley and his rink of Jody Capp, Geoff Unwin and Bernie Marino.

The sole winner for Morwell Club (2) was Gail Rejmer and her team of Steve Kilpatrick, Daryl Martin and Barry Flanigan who won 28-25 over Rod Dixon and his rink of Phil Zappelli, Charlie Amos and Wally Smith leaving Newborough (4) the winners and they will return to division four next season.

DIVISION SIX PLAYING alongside the division one final at Morwell, Newborough (5) were aiming to make it four winners for the club but were unable to defeat a Longwarry (2) team determined to move up to division five.

Gerard Mitchell and his team of Reg Dunn, Judy Eastwell and Mark Serong had a 47-17 win over Betty Williams and her team of Sheila Derooij, Stuart Wilson and Chris Wagstaff.

Class on show in preseason tournament NETBALL

THE Latrobe Valley was treated to some world class netball over the weekend, as the Collingwood Magpies hosted a pre-season tournament with the Adelaide Thunderbirds and Queensland Firebirds.

Taking place at the Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Stadium in Traralgon, the Magpies played two fiercely contested matches against their interstate competitors on Friday night and Sunday afternoon, with the match between the Firebirds and Thunderbirds scheduled for Saturday cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns.

Beginning with a clash against the Thunderbirds on Friday, the bumper Traralgon crowd played witness to an excellent display of netball with both teams fine tuning their skills ahead of the start of the season.

Despite getting off to a fast start in the first quarter, the Magpies could not sustain their defensive pressure with the class and poise of the Thunderbirds seeing them walk into half time one goal ahead.

The second half would be filled with momentum swings as fans got a glimpse of the excellent talent running around on both teams and their fast paced styles of play.

With the game on a knife’s edge throughout the final term, the Thunderbirds class and experience would prevail, claiming a hard fought 51-48 victory.

Sunday morning would see the Magpies welcome old favourite Kim Ravallion and the Queensland Firebirds in what was a match littered with stars.

Starting off strongly, the experience of the Firebirds looked too good for the Magpies as they opened up a five goal lead at quarter time with the likes of Ravallion and goal shooter Romelda Aiken prolific.

In dire need of a spark heading into the second quarter, Collingwood’s senior players stepped up and turned the game on its head with some excellent defensive work from captain Geva Mentor giving the likes of Molly Jovic and Gabrielle Sinclair a chance to hurt the Firebirds on the offensive end.

The Magpies would bring that same intensity into the start of the second half, with their active hands and excellent court coverage making things incredibly difficult for the Firebirds.

A hit with the locals: Magpie players signed autographs for fans following the match.

With nine goals separating the teams at the final change, the intensity of the game would go to another level in the last 15 minutes with slick ball movement seeing the Firebirds fight their way back to a four goal deficit.

However, unlike Friday night, the Magpies would hold their nerve and regain control of the game with the women in black and white eventually running out 11 goal victors.

Collingwood coach Nicole Richardson said she was pleased with what her team got out of the weekend’s matches and the intensity by which they were played.

“We took a lot out of learnings out of the first game, we were a bit disappointed with our execution in game one so we addressed that as a group and I thought the girls responded really well,” Richardson

said. “Our main focuses going into this game were our centre pass conversion and long court conversion and they were pretty much where they needed to be today so that was pleasing.

“I thought both games had a real intent and purpose about them and both games were physical, so I think that is where our game is going now with the body strength of the players just incredible.”

Along with the two matches, the Magpies made the effort to get involved with the local community by putting on a coaching clinic on Saturday morning.

Star centre Molly Jovic said it was fantastic to get to know the locals and grow the game in the Latrobe Valley area.

“It has been an awesome weekend, it’s been great to win over a couple of fans,” Jovic said.

“I love doing the clinics with the young girls, they are all so eager to learn and happy to be there so it was just fantastic to give back to this community who support us so well.”

Now in its second year, the partnership between Collingwood and the Latrobe Valley has reached new heights, Richardson said how important it was to her and the playing group.

“It is really important that we continue to develop our partnerships with local community and the girls really enjoy coming here and giving back to the locals,” she said.

“We just want to say a big thank you to everyone that came out, it’s great to know we have Victorians behind the Magpies and to start to get a bunch of supporters that are one eyed Collingwood is really exciting.”

Magpies fly to flag CRICKET TDCA

WET weather caused issues over the weekend for the Traralgon and District Cricket Association grand final, but a result was achieved and what a result it was.

Saturday started out poorly for the grand final as rain delayed the scheduled 11am start until 2:30pm.

Luckily for the TDCA, Rovers and Duncan Cameron Park is well equipped to handle wet weather and the wicket was bone dry under the huge covers so play could start straight away.

The day was reduced to 64 overs of play which was a great result due to the amount of rain that fell in the morning.

The toss was won by Glengarry captain Nat Freitag who took the punt and decided to send Ex Students in to bat.

It proved to be the right move as Frank Marks removed James Pryde with a brilliant caught and bowled.

It looked as if the wicket was a little tacky still and it worked in Glengarry’s favour, next knocking over the other opener Matt Dyke for 10.

Matt Robertson was a surprise elevation up the order but batted beautifully, steadying the ship in the face of a Freitag onslaught although he was given a life early getting dropped in slips.

Jordan Gilmore arrived at the crease with the score on 2/28 and a big sigh went around the ground when he was dropped on a duck.

A controversial run out opportunity followed which was given not out but it was evident that Gilmore was looking a little scratchy and finally was removed by Freitag for six.

Lee Stockdale then came and went for one, Jackson McMahon tried gallantly but Freitag had his measure as well and when Jake Best, who had left the ground to play a practice match for Traralgon Football Club was dismissed by Cam Graham the

Magpies were wreaking havoc on the superstar Ex Students line up with the score on 6/68.

This brought Rick Battista to the crease and he decided to take the game on, playing his shots and not dying wondering and it seemed to be paying dividends until Robertson was removed late day one for a well made 28.

Mitch Harris and Battista guided Ex Students to the close of play on day one with the score 7/101 which after the start the Sharks had would have certainly been happy with.

Day two started on time and with plenty of talking points, mainly around Battista and his ability to bat incredibly well when his back is to the wall.

The other big question was what score Ex Students would be comfortable with trying to defend and the main feeling was that 150 would give the Sharks a shot at glory.

It didn’t start out as planned for Ex Students though as Battista chipped a Freitag delivery to square leg and things then went from bad to worse as Michael Warne strangled one down the leg side for a duck and at 9/108 all hope seemed lost.

New ball bowlers Mitch Harris and Andy Matthews then got to work, batting beautifully for the last wicket to put on 52 which took the Ex Students total up to 160 before Matthews got out to Al Jenkin.

The best part of the partnership was when Freitag decided to go upstairs to Harris who planted him for two massive sixes which had the crowd on the edge of their seats and it was great to see the battle unfold between two proud cricketers.

Harris finished not out at the close of the innings for a well made 43.

Glengarry’s bowlers were all exceptional but it was Freitag who was an absolute wrecking ball, dismissing the likes of Gilmore and Stockdale on his way to claiming 6/45 from 23 overs.

It was a pretty simple equation but knowing Ex Students and their never-give-up attitude it was

always going to be tough for the Glengarry batsmen.

Their first challenge was to negotiate a difficult little 40 minute period before the tea break which they managed to full effect as Sam Marks took it up to the bowlers playing some very nice shots.

Ex Students came out a bit too fired up as a few uncharacteristic overthrows set the tone for a frustrating session.

It wasn’t until the score was on 45 that fifth change bowler Warne got the wicket of Jenkin which brought Freitag to the crease.

Freitag and Sam Marks put on another 50 runs before Pryde took Marks’ wicket to a miss timed sweep and the feeling was that this could be the break the Sharks needed.

It wasn’t to be though as Frank Marks batted incredibly well with his captain to guarantee the win for Glengarry.

All the Glengarry batsmen had a steely look about their batting and were able to do what Ex Students couldn’t and get themselves in without taking too much risk.

Jenkin made 21, Sam Marks got a good 36 and Frank Marks finished 41 not out but it was Freitag again who got the job done for his club making a fine 56 not out to guide Glengarry to an eight wicket win.

No surprise that Freitag won man of the match for his brilliant all round game, holding Glengarry’s third A Grade premiership cup aloft.

After the match he thanked his club for allowing him the chance to win his first ever premiership.

As celebrations will continue at Glengarry up until Easter it’s important to reflect on just how good a win this premiership has been and considering it’s the first time a team outside the top two has won an A Grade Premiership in the TDCA since 2015/16 its certainly an achievement worth celebrating.

Boomers bound into Traralgon BASKETBALL

THE Melbourne Boomers paid the Latrobe Valley a visit last Thursday with coach Guy Molloy running two clinics.

Supported by the Latrobe Valley Authority, Latrobe City Council and Energy Basketball, three Victorian National Performance Program athletes were put through shooting and footwork exercises in the first session with local coaches present to listen to the micro-coaching points Molloy gave to each player.

The second session was a coaching clinic with a focus on introducing an offense to youth players, with the Traralgon under 16 girls squad lucky enough to partake in the informative workout.

On Friday morning, five select coaches from the region were given the unique opportunity to meet with Molloy for a chat.

The informal setting gave them a chance to talk all things basketball, get some excellent coaching tips and gain some insight to the Boomers program.

The Boomers have a connection to the area through current player Chelsea D’Angelo, who played her junior basketball in Traralgon.

VETERANS CRICKET

CRICKET Victoria has rescheduled matches that were due to be played against South Australia in early February.

The matches will now be played in Mildura on the weekend April 10-11.

Games will be played at over 50, 60 and 70 level. Gippsland Goannas players selected for the games are Ray Smith and Ken Bailey (over 60), along with Kevin Lanigan (over 70s captain) and Ian Gibson (over 70s wicketkeeper).

The national over 60 championships will be held on the Sunshine Coast this year in September, while the over 70 championships will be held in Launceston in November. The over 50s will meet in Adelaide, also in November. Several Goannas players have nominated in each section and will commence training for these events as early as practically possible.
