WEValley’s REMEMBERED THEM personal tribute on Anzac Day

Paying respects: People across the country, including those in the Latrobe Valley, stood in streets and driveways to pay their respects on Anzac Day.

THOUSANDS across the Latrobe Valley stood in streets and driveways to pay their respects on Anzac Day. With traditional public commemorative ceremonies such as the dawn service out of action to the general public as a result of COVID-19 restrictions, the RSL encouraged people to Light Up The Dawn in 2020.

They certainly responded with not even crisp conditions stopping those young and old from reflecting on those who have served, and those who continue to serve Australia.

Members of the Traralgon Brass Band stood out the front of their homes to play The Last Post, while others tuned into radios or streamed services on their mobile phones as 6am arrived.

Retired Major Oliver Raymond honoured

the fallen outside of his Traralgon home as he listened to the Gippsland FM radio coverage.

“Right on time they played The Last Post, followed shortly after by the Reveille,” he said.

“I glanced up our street and estimated that at least half the houses had people standing in honour to the fallen with their candles in front of them, a testament to the effect of this new form of recognition. Well done to Gippsland FM and well done to our community.

“In many ways, this was a more significant ceremony than the traditional one.”

Different day of parliament says local MP MEMBER for Morwell Russell Northe was one of a limited number of members of parliament who attended an emergency sitting of state Parliament due to COVID-19 restrictions on Thursday.

Mr Northe described it as a “very different day of Parliament” but MPs were able to remotely contribute to debating Bills.

He said this included passing a range of budget and COVID-19 measures, including legislation designed to provide health funding, immediate business and economic support and a suite of temporary changes to assist businesses, individuals and families.

“I did take the opportunity to commend the Premier and his cabinet along with staff and their teams for their responsiveness in tacking the COVID-19 situation and continuing to update the community,” Mr Northe said.

“Whilst I don’t necessarily agree or support every measure or restriction that has been introduced, particularly given there a number of inconsistencies that exist, I do respect that decisions have been made in the interests of all Victorians.

“I also put on the record my admiration and respect for members of my community who have displayed enormous resilience, strength and innovation given these unprecedented times and the current challenges before us.”

Mr Northe said he was still concerned about access to essential items, and some of the gaps in existing support measures individuals, families, businesses and organisations.

“I will continue to advocate to the state government on behalf of the Morwell electorate to achieve the best possible outcomes we can in these trying times,” he said.

Valley’s cases stay at seven

THE total number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Victoria as of Sunday night is 1349.

The number of cases in the Latrobe Valley remains steady at seven.

One new death was reported overnight Saturday, a man in his 90s who died in hospital.

To date, 17 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria.

The total number of cases is made up of 698 men and 651 women, with people aged from babies to their early nineties.

There are 137 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Victoria that may have been acquired through community transmission.

Currently 21 people are in hospital, including 10 patients in intensive care.

1265 people have recovered. More than 101,000 tests have been completed.

Of the total 1349 cases, there have been 1094 in metropolitan Melbourne and 216 in regional Victoria. Several cases remain under investigation.

The state’s Chief Health Officer, Professor Brett Sutton, encouraged Victorians not to get complacent and continue to observe the restrictions in place.

“Our daily case numbers are still low which is encouraging. They prove that our physical distancing measures are working but this is not a time to relax our strong approach – this disease can get away from you very quickly as we have seen in cities overseas,” Professor Sutton said.

“We thank Victorians who overwhelmingly are doing the right thing by staying at home, but we must keep at it to save lives.

“Everyone who’s unwell must isolate themselves and everyone who’s been told they’re in quarantine either as a returned traveller or close contact must do so as well.

“Physical distancing will save lives.

Everyone needs to comply with restrictions in place to keep yourself, your loved ones and the whole community safe.

“Our message is clear: if you can stay home, you must stay home.”

The Department of Health and Human Services follows up and monitors all close contacts of confirmed

cases and provides them with information and support.

All close contacts must self-isolate for 14 days.

There are only four reasons for Victorians to leave their home: food and supplies, medical care and care giving, exercise, and work or education.

Police have strong powers to enforce these directions and can issue on the spot fines, including up to $1,652 for individuals and up to $9,913 for businesses.

Under the State of Emergency people who don’t comply could also be taken to court and receive a fine of up to $20,000.

Companies face fines of up to $100,000.

Angels of the community

Big boost for Willow Grove BAW BAW Shire will upgrade the playground at the Willow Grove Recreation Reserve.

It features on a list of community-led placemaking projects delivered following council’s endorsement of its second annual Placemaking Program.

The program allocates $200,000 annually ($50,000 to each town) for smaller rural communities to deliver projects at the top of the community’s wish list.

Willow Grove joins Darnum, Labertouche and Noojee as recipients.

“It’s fantastic to see four new communityled projects endorsed for delivery,” Baw Baw Mayor Danny Goss said.

“Each project will undoubtedly improve liveability, happiness and wellbeing for each respective community.

“We thank each community for being so collaborative and engaged throughout the consultation process.”

The previous round of the Placemaking Program saw projects delivered in Athlone, Erica, Thorpdale and Jindivick.

A TRAFALGAR woman is looking for local storage space to assist a not-for-profit organisation that helps grieving families who have lost their babies.

Angel Gowns for Australian Angel Babies donates handmade burial gowns, or hand-crocheted booties and beanies made by a team of volunteers for babies who have died prenatal or full-term.

The burial gowns are made out of donated wedding gowns.

Care packages containing a gown, wrap, blanket, nappy, beanie, booties and keepsakes are shipped across Australia and donated to families, hospitals and funeral homes.

Campers found Mr Hill’s vehicle with signs of minor fire damage at their campsite near Dry River Creek Track in the Wonnangatta Valley on March 21.

The examination of the fire scene by arson chemists was inconclusive and police would like to speak to anyone who saw this fire or the smoke from it.

Investigators are also keen to talk to anyone who saw their campsite and the equipment and vehicle there.

Acting Inspector Dave Fyfe said Mr Hill worked in the logging industry for some time and was familiar with the area. “We know that he had spent quite a bit of time up here and he was described to us as being quite meticulous when camping,� he said.

“With that in mind, we don’t believe he would have come up here unprepared and his disappearance is considered to be out of character. “It’s also understood Russell had purchased a drone before coming up here and we still can’t find that drone. We have been told it was a DJI brand and Mavic model drone. “If someone has recovered it, we’d really like them to come forward. “This is quite a remote area with rugged terrain and if they have suffered some form of misadventure in the bush, then it could prove difficult forthem to get help quickly. “Significant searches of the area have been undertaken over the past month in attempt to find them and sadly, the more time that passes the less opportunity there is for us to locate Russell and Carol safe and well.�

Police continue to hold concerns for the welfare of Mr Hill and Ms Clay because of the amount of time they have been missing and Russell also suffers from a number of medical conditions.

Ex-Gippsland Grammar employee pleads guilty to child sex offences

A FORMER employee at Gippsland Grammar in Sale was convicted in the County Court on Thursday after earlier pleading guilty to child sex offences involving two female teenage students.

Tristan Vanderwatt had been working at Blackwood House, the school’s boarding house, while working as a gap year student in a semi-supervisory role.

Vanderwatt, from South Africa, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual penetration of a child under 16 and one count of encouraging a child to have, or be involved in, sexual activity.

He committed the offences between June and December last year, at the age of 20.

Federal Police arrested him on December 9 as he was attempting to board a plane to South Africa.

Vanderwatt was sentenced on Thursday to three years in prison with a minimum of one year and eight months.

News in brief He is expected to be deported to South Africa on release.

In full view: A man, 41, was arrested after spending six hours on the roof of a house in Williams Avenue, Churchill on Thursday afternoon. He appeared at Latrobe Valley Magistrates Court on Friday.

Man on roof arrested

A 41-year-old Churchill man faced court after police spent six hours talking him down off a roof of a house opposite a primary school in Williams Avenue, Churchill on Thursday.

Police arrested the man and interviewed him in relation to five incidents of alleged burglaries and trespass in Churchill between April 18-23.

The man was held in remand and appeared at Latrobe Magistrates Court on Friday.

Latrobe CIU Detective Acting Sergeant Daniel Quine said police had blocked off Williams Avenue after the man went into a vacant house and hid in the roof cavity when police forced entry. “He got into the roof and was there for six

hours, police talked him down and he was arrested, but he was aggravated when we got there,� Act Sgt Quine said. “We resolved it peacefully in the end and he came down after hours of negotiation.�

Act Sgt Quine said 12 police officers had attended the incident including uniformed members from Morwell, Moe and Churchill and Latrobe CIU. He said the incident had posed no risk to the community, but members of the public were warned they would be breaching COVID-19 restrictions if they came to look. “The road was blocked at either end to stop people coming past and aggravate him further,� he said.

DETECTIVES from the Missing Persons Squad and Wellington Crime Investigation Unit are appealing for anyone with information in relation to missing campers Russell Hill and Carol Clay to come forward.

It is believed Mr Hill and Ms Clay were camping at Wonnangatta River near the Wonnangatta camping ground.

Mr Hill left his Drouin home on March 19 and planned to visit various campsites along the Dargo River with his route exiting the region at Dargo on March 26.

Mr Hill was last heard from on March 20 via HF radio and it has been confirmed he was at Wonnangatta Station in the Victorian Alps when he made the call.

Ms Clay told friends she was heading away and was expecting to return home on March 28 or 29.

There are a number of different routes to the Wonnangatta camping ground, however police now believe the pair have travelled through Heyfield and Licola, then into the valley.

It appears they were travelling together in Mr Hill’s vehicle, a white Toyota Landcruiser.

Officer in charge of the Missing Persons Squad, Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper, urged anyone who may have seen the pair or the vehicle to come forward. “This was really the last weekend in Victoria where people could freely travel about, so there were potentially a number of people in the area who could have seen Russell and Carol,� he said. “If there were any hunters, campers or motorcyclists who were in the area around this time then we’d like to speak to you and I can assure people, we are only focused on this investigation. Please do not feel worried that police are looking to catch anyone out with regards to non-essential travel. “We’re also asking anyone who was driving in the area or along the same route who may have captured dashcam footage of the pair or the car, to please check and contact police if they find anything. “We’re also keen to know if they stopped anywhere on the journey up and if anyone has CCTV footage. “Any piece of information or footage could prove crucial at this point. “At this stage, we’re at a loss to say exactly what has happened

Complaints levelled at Yallourn

VOICES of the Valley has joined forces with health and environment groups to made a legal complaint to the Victorian Environment Protection Authority over increased particle pollution at Yallourn Power Station.

The coalition of groups alleges EnergyAustralia has breached environmental laws and its licence conditions after Yallourn reported increased particle emissions and is calling on the EPA to investigate the matter.

Groups include Voices of the Valley, Environmental Justice Australia,

Doctors for the Environment, Lung Foundation Australia, Asthma Australia, Environment Victoria, Healthy Futures, Australian Conservation Foundation and Friends of the Earth.

Voices of the Valley president Wendy Farmer said that a number of Latrobe Valley residents reported that their houses, cars or outdoor areas had been covered in a layer of coal residue on some mornings.

“This has been getting worse in the last few years. There is clearly something wrong with the pollution controls at Yallourn and yet the EPA is

not doing enough to protect our health,” Ms Farmer said. “Our community in the Latrobe Valley is proud to supply electricity to Victoria, but not at the cost of the health of our families.”

The legal complaint refers to recent National Pollutant Inventory data showing Yallourn PM2.particle pollution increased by 82 per cent and PM10 coarse particle pollution rose by 45 per cent from the previous year, despite one of its generators being offline for maintenance during that time.

The complaint also alleges links between Yallourn’s steep rise in emissions and electrostatic dust precipitator

failures - which is also the subject of an existing legal dispute between Environmental Justice Australia and the EPA. EJA is instead pushing for EnergyAustralia to use bag filters, a pollution control measure legally mandated in many other countries and captures almost all fine particle pollution.

An EnergyAustralia spokesman said the company “strongly” rejected implications that its operations posed unacceptable risks to human health.

“We take great care to ensure emissions remain within licence limits and

that any impacts from our operations are socially and environmentally acceptable,” he told The Express.

An EPA spokesman said Victorian power stations must operate under an EPA licence and ensure strict emission limits were adhered to or face prosecution for breaches of the Environment Protection Act 1970.

“Environment Protection Authority Victoria takes community concerns about air quality and emissions from power stations seriously,” he said.

“We are investigating the issue to ensure that the plant is in compliance with licence obligations.”

SOUTH Gippsland Shire Council has proposed a $2 million COVID19 support package to cover its local government area.

The package includes the introduction of a COVID-19 Hardship Policy to support residents having trouble making rate repayments, the option of interest-free rate deferrals for local businesses and an expanded grants program that will allow for more grant recipients and the introduction of a new business grants stream.

The support package is included in the 2020/21 Council budget which is currently open for community consideration until May 28.

South Gippsland Shire’s chair administrator Julie Eisenbise is pleased the support package was a key feature of the 2020/21 budget.

“The COVID-19 Support Package will be delivered by a dedicated project management team in consultation with key stakeholder groups including the Municipal Emergency Management Committee and the Business Emergency Leadership Group to ensure the actions are best placed to deliver real outcomes for South Gippsland,” she said.

“We are conscious we need to look not only at what is happening now in our community but that we are planning for what happens in the months ahead. We are experiencing challenging times but are confident that solid support measures and our impressive community spirit will see South Gippsland come through this period of uncertainty and head toward a strong recovery.”

THE Environment Protection Authority is seeking public comment into a planned expansion at a Morwell organic waste processor on Monash Way. Pinegro Products is seeking an EPA Works Approval to upgrade and expand its existing organic waste processing facility to increase compost quantities and process different types of waste.

The expanded facility would be able to accept up to 30,000 tonnes of pine bark and sawdust and 55,000 tonnes of combined food organic waste and green organic waste per year.

It would also be able to take up to 5000 tonnes of biosolids and 5000 tonnes of commercial food waste.

The organic wastes would be processed through an enclosed in-vessel composting system that uses an air management system to control the composting process and odours.

The resulting compost would be matured in open air windrows.

Pinegro has been operating for more than 25 years at Monash Way. In 2018, the company was awarded a half-million dollar Victorian Government grant towards building state-of-the-art technology to nearly double the plant’s processing capacity.

Pinegro will continue to process pine bark and sawdust to produce landscape products at a reduced scale.

The facility will produce up to 40,000 tonnes of landscape products such as potting mix, soils and mulch, and 45,000 tonnes of finished compost per year.

The finished compost product will be certified to meet the Australian standard for composts.

Pinegro received an amendment to its planning permit from Latrobe City Council in March 2020.

Australia and New Zealand flags flew at half-mast outside of RSLs Normally a hive of activity on April 25 with breakfasts and scores of old mates catching up, the sense of quiet outside these venues was the perfect illustration of how Anzac Day looked a whole lot different in 2020.

Even the traditional Anzac Day race meeting at Moe was restricted to licenced participants and required employees.

Youngsters from the Kylie Early Learning Centre in Morwell proved a telling display of how Anzac Day touches people of all ages, making a Lest we forget sign and poppies, which adorn the centre’s fence on Holmes Road.

Member for Gippsland Darren Chester, who is also the Veterans’ Affairs Minister, congratulated Gippslanders for respectfully commemorating Anzac Day at home.

“While it is disappointing we can’t attend public events, at its heart, Anzac Day is a time for personal reflection,” Mr Chester said.

“It’s our chance to demonstrate our respect for those who fought to win the freedoms we enjoy today.

“We are fortunate and we are also the beneficiaries of previous generations who gave so much to protect and build our nation in the most difficult circumstances.

“Across Gippsland, people of all ages demonstrated their respect with private vigils in their driveways, front lawns or lounge rooms.

“This year, Gippslanders reflected on the meaning of Anzac Day at home in their own way.

“They paused to

remember the 102,000 fallen Australians whose names are immortalised on the walls of the Australian War Memorial, and the many thousands wounded or injured during their service in the Australian Defence Force.

“Anzac Day is a time to think about those who continue to serve in uniform today and those who love and support them in their service.”

A TRARALGON Brass Band member did not let COVID-19 restrictions stop her from paying respects to fallen soldiers on Anzac Day as she performed a small driveway service to her neighbourhood.

Madeleine Whiting took out her trumpet at 6am on Saturday to perform the Last Post, Reveille and recite the Ode at the end of her driveway.

Ms Whiting had printed out some flyers to her surrounding neighbours inviting them to stand in their own driveway or footpaths to pay their respects.

“When events were cancelled, I still wanted to pay my respects in my driveway,” Ms Whiting said.

“For me, I wanted to pay my respects for fallen soldiers because we had lots of family members go to war and I wanted to carry on the legacy.”

Ms Whiting got the idea from Oz trumpet legend James Morrison who asked fellow musos to take to their front yards to play the Last Post at dawn as part of a grassroots campaign.

The 18-year-old aspiring music teacher had been in the Traralgon Brass Band for the past four years playing cornet.

She said Anzac Day was usually the band’s biggest day of the year, playing at five services starting with the Traralgon RSL dawn service and gunfire breakfast.

She said the band would then head over to Tyers dawn service, Glengarry service and march, then go back to Traralgon for the main service and wind up at Rosedale for its main service and march.

Online learning is proving a winner at Morwell Central

THE staff at Morwell Central Primary worked very hard at the end of Term 1 and over the school holidays, enabling the successful launch of the school’s Online Learning Website on the first day of Term 2.

Each day, the parents and students are able to access a wide range of tasks including Ready to Learn activities, Reading, Writing, Word Work, Maths, Sport and ASPIRE (the school’s values).

There are even extra activities available such as Read Alouds, Songs and Brain Breaks.

To add a personal touch, there are videos of daily Morning Greetings where teachers speak

to their students, reminding them of the requirements for the day as well as offering words of encouragement and even telling some jokes.

Mini lessons are also on video where teachers introduce and revise work.

Teachers keep in touch with their students by phone calls and messages via uEducateUs, our communication platform.

There has been lots of new learning for all staff, students and families. The school is very proud of its families and how well they are adjusting and embracing its new online webpage.

CHILDREN across the Latrobe Valley have expressed their artistic talents during this time of isolation.

Inspired by the Facebook group Rainbow Trail Australia, Traralgon siblings Willow, 7 and Sonny Kirby, 5 have drawn a large rainbow on their roller door.

Rainbow Trail Australia was created in March and in a little more than

a month the group has gained more than 140,000 members.

Mum Angela said Willow and Sonny enjoyed the opportunity to showcase their work on the page.

“We’ve had a bit of a good time actually, they’ve drawn the rainbow on the garage door and on the house.

They’ve had the drive way covered as well,” Ms Kirby said.

“It has given them something fun to do.

“Even though they’re having to stay at home, they haven’t really noticed that there has been a problem because they have had such a good time doing these drawings.”

Ms Kirby said she wasn’t surprised the Rainbow Trail initiative had gained traction with youngsters throughout Australia.

“It gives them a bit of a sense of community as well. When we go out riding they see other houses with

similar drawings or the teddies in the windows. People have driven past our house and stopped and had a look.

They love it, it’s really nice,” she said.

“Other friends had done the Rainbow Trail so we thought we would do it as well.

“It has been great for the kids and even though they can’t see their friends, they’re all still doing the same thing and they still feel like they’re connected with them.”

THE state government has extended the $20,000 First Home Owner Grant for people buying or building a new home in regional Victoria for an extra 12 months.

Treasurer Tim Pallas last week announced that the regional grant - which had been due to end in June - will be extended until the middle of 2021.

“We know the coronavirus pandemic is making it even tougher for young people to achieve their dreams of home ownership - that’s why we’re extending the grant which has helped so many regional Victorians,” Mr Pallas said.

“Owning your own home shouldn’t be a pipe dream - we’re helping out with the financial kick-start they need to make it a reality.”

The grant gives more Victorians the opportunity to live locally and enter the market for the first time, while also providing certainty to the regional construction industry as the impacts of coronavirus are felt.

In 2017, the state government doubled the grant from $10,000 to $20,000.

Since then, more than 8800 grants have been provided in regional areas.

To be eligible for the grant, the purchaser or purchasers must be first home buyers buying or building a property valued at $750,000 or less and it must be used as the principal place of residence for 12 continuous months following settlement.

Busting germs with the eyes of a spider

“You know what you need to be good at this job? Spider eyes.

You look at one spot and then you look above it and next to it and below it,” LRH Environmental Services staffer Shirley Anton says.

When you think of frontline staff during the COVID-19 pandemic, Shirley and her colleague Marlene Lamont are probably furthest from your mind. Yet here they are, kitted up in PPE and giving the isolation room in the Emergency Department a top to bottom clean. They are a line of defence to reduce the spread of germs.

“You gown up and give the area a thorough clean, not just a wipe down. You’ve got to clean the bed properly, chairs, underneath all of the furniture, every piece of equipment, every lead and power cable - everything,” Marlene says.

“You might have taken half an hour to give it a top to bottom clean and a patient goes in for 10

minutes and you’re back in there giving it another thorough clean because the room will be needed again for a new patient.”

Having worked together for a while, Marlene and Shirley are in synch with what needs to be cleaned in the ED every day.

“Regardless of COVID I’ve always seen the cleanliness of the ED as a high priority, just like theatre,” Shirley says.

“Let’s face it, the ED gets everything through the front door - gastro, ‘flu, whatever. It’s the frontline and everyone is here to get a job done whether you’re a doctor, a nurse or in enviro.”

And apart from Shirley’s ‘spider eyes’, getting the job done requires another important element.

“You need to take pride in your work and do it properly,” Marlene says. “You need to clean as if your family member is coming into this bed or this area - how would you like it for them?”

Don’t forget the influenza threat

There’s something all of us can do while we’re waiting for a COVID-19 vaccine to be developed - get a ‘flu shot.

Victoria’s influenza season typically runs between April and October, although there were a number of cases as late (or early) as January this year.

There were more than 69,000 laboratory-confirmed influenza cases across the state last year, seven times higher than 2018. Gippsland recorded 3000 cases, up from 344 in 2018.

Victoria’s hospitals don’t need an influenza outbreak amid the COVID-19 pandemic - imagine how stretched the health system would be? Increased ‘flu cases would also put pressure on a hospital’s stock of personal protective equipment (PPE) used to protect healthcare workers from infection. We know

these stocks are in short supply or being strictly managed across the globe.

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton is leading the charge in urging people to get a flu vaccine, particularly those whose health may be compromised by other illnesses, the elderly, pregnant women and the Aboriginal community.

Also, an up to date ‘flu vaccination is now mandatory for anyone working in or visiting a residential aged care facility.

“Influenza is a serious illness that kills many Victorians each year. With COVID-19 now also circulating in the state, a widespread influenza outbreak would be a devastating doublewhammy for our health services to cope with,” he said.

LRH is also doing its bit by

running its employee influenza immunisation program earlier than usual. In just a few weeks, more than half of the organisation’s 2000-strong workforce has been immunised.

Former infection control nurse Helen Sambell has come out of retirement to assist with the program at LRH. Each day she loads up a trolley with vaccines to immunise clinical and non-clinical staff for their own protection and to reduce the risk of transmission to patients.

“I think there are a lot of people who are afraid of COVID and trying to protect themselves. If you are well and your immunity is up, you’re in a better position to fight something than if you’ve got the ‘flu and you come into contact with COVID,” Helen said.

You’re probably wondering whether our region will experience the surge of illness that has challenged many other health services in our state and across the globe. Is this the calm before a storm or have we truly flattened the COVID curve and the situation will only improve from here?

I’m hoping it’s the latter, which would be terrific news, not just for the Gippsland community but staff at hospitals across our region. It means we are better able to care for confirmed or suspected COVID cases in lower numbers over an extended period of time rather than be faced with an influx of cases through our doors all at once.

Nonetheless, LRH is pushing ahead with plans to expand our Critical Care Unit for COVID-19 with assistance from DHHS. Setting up beds with the right support equipment such as ventilators is not an easy process, nor is it particularly speedy, so we are working to have as many measures in place now. We’re unsure how the influenza season combined with COVID-19 may affect resources.

Rather than try to predict the unknown perhaps we could all focus on what we can do.

As a community, the Valley and Gippsland overall has done well to heed the advice delivered by the medical experts. Sticking to physical distancing recommendations and staying home if possible has kept the number of confirmed coronavirus cases to a manageable level in this region.

It’s not over yet but on behalf of LRH, I’d like to thank you for doing what you can to reduce the risk of infection taking hold. You’ve had to make sacrifices but they’ve been relatively easy compared with the grief of losing a loved one to this virus.

I urge you to keep following the rules - wash your hands, keep your distance from others and restrict your movements to essential trips only.

Please get a ‘flu shot if you can and if you have an ongoing or chronic illness, don’t hesitate to contact your GP or come to our Emergency Department if you become unwell. We want you to continue to manage your condition throughout the pandemic.

We’ll keep you informed through this paper, the local media and our website of any changes to our services in the coming weeks.

Looking back through the archives at memorable sporƟng moments in the Latrobe Valley.

Proud: Jason Bright’s parents Josie and Ken sacrificed so much, even selling their home, to keep their son racing in the early 1990s.

Local hero: Jason Bright waves to the crowd during a welcome home parade throughout the streets of Moe and Newborough in December 1998.

When Brighty conquered the mountain BATHURST is the holy grail of Australian motorsport.

So when the Latrobe Valley’s own Jason Bright conquered the mountain with teammate Steven Richards in 1998, the achievement earned a rightly place in the pantheon of the region’s greatest sporting achievements.

Born in Moe, Bright first shot to prominence when he won the Junior Club Championship at the Gippsland Go-Kart Club as a 15-year-old and took out the Senior Club Championship the next year.

Bright won the Victorian Go Karting Championship in 1991 and by 1993 debuted in the Australian Formula Ford Championship.

In 1995, he enjoyed a dream year.

Bright won the Australian Formula Ford Championship in a Van Diemen RF95 (Mark Webber finished the season in fourth).

He further entrenched himself as one of the country’s brightest motorsport prospects during the next two years.

Bright juggled racing in Australia and the United States in 1996.

He won two races in the US Formula Ford 2000 Championship and tasted success in three races on the Australian Drivers’ Championship.

Bright turned his focus back to Australia in 1997.

He dominated the Australian Drivers’ Championship, winning seven races on the way to lifting the title and made his V8 Supercars debut at Symmons Plains in Tasmania for Garry Rogers Motorsport.

The 24-year-old impressed with his speed and composure, scoring a pair of top 10 finishes on his first weekend.

Later in the year Bright teamed up with 1980 Formula 1 champion Alan Jones to finish third at the Sandown 500.

Bright got his first taste of Bathurst as the third driver with Jones and American Scott Pruett.

His life would change forever when he arrived at Mount Panorama 12 months later.

By this stage Bright had earned a full-time drive with Stone Brothers Racing.

He landed a pole at Hidden Valley in Darwin and garnered a string of top six finishes, highlighted by a third place finish at Calder Park.

But despite those flashes of speed, little was expected from Bright and co-driver Richards when they arrived at Bathurst in November 1998.

Craig Lowndes had won the 1998 Championship ahead of Russell Ingall and Mark Skaife, while luminaries such as Larry Perkins and Dick Johnson boasted extensive Bathurst pedigrees.

Bright had a massive crash in practice on the Friday, but the Stone Brothers team did a sterling job to get the Ford EL Falcon ready to qualify in 15th place.

That set the scene for November 15, 1998.

A strategy to pull into the pits after just 12 laps was one of the key factors in the victory.

Bright had moved from 15th up to ninth when he came in, a move described by commentators as “very, very early”.

But the gamble paid off.

Bright and Richards were running in the top five by lap 32 and climbed into the top three at the 100-lap mark.

As key contenders such as Greg Murphy and Dick Johnson wilted, the Pirtek Falcon climbed to second, albeit more than 30 seconds behind leaders Craig Lowndes and Mark Skaife.

But when trouble struck Skaife due to tyre failure at Forest Elbow on lap 114, Bright and Richards assumed the lead.

Bright pitted on lap 130, with Richards driving the final 31 laps of the 1000km assignment.

Richards, then 26, maintained the advantage to win by 10.33 seconds from Larry Perkins and Russell Ingall.

For Bright, it was the moment of a lifetime.

“We just had the strategy and the car to win the race, and it was up to me and Steve to do the job,” he said.

“It is no secret that I made a mistake earlier in the week and the team did a fantastic job to get it back together and in a state where it could win the race.

“We were so far back that it was decided that we should make the early stop and as it worked out, the pace cars fell our way.

“We have had a tough year, but this was just a dream come true.”

Bright’s triumph received the front page treatment from The Express on Monday, November 16, 1998.

Sports reporter Jason Shields tapped into the significance of the win in his report.

The reward was tremendous for the Bright family, especially Jason’s parents Ken and Josie, who have had to battle through financial hardship to help continue their son’s driving career.

Three years ago, the couple sold their house in Newborough and late last year had to call on the Latrobe Valley for financial support to get Jason to the track for the final round of the Formula Holden Championship.

“It was a really hard thing for us to do,” Ken recalled.

“But we got the support we needed and Jason got to the track and wrapped up the championship.

“Now he is the golden boy of Australian racing.”

last night celebrating together until the early hours.

“Last night, Jason and I just looked at each other and shook our heads. We just can’t believe that it has happened,” Ken said.

“It’s a dream come true and we’re very proud.

“I’ve had to keep recharging the mobile phone batteries because the congratulation calls have been running hot.

“We’re certainly appreciative of the support we’ve had.

“Hopefully Jason’s win has captured the imagination of the Latrobe Valley.”

It did just that.

Bright was given a welcome home parade in December with more than 2000 people lining the streets of Moe and Newborough.

Bathurst champion Jason Bright - feted by his home town at the weekend - has become the first citizen to receive a ‘key to the city’ from Latrobe Shire.

Mayor Brendan Jenkins made the presentation during a civic reception for the 25-year-old motorsport ace at Moe Town Hall on Friday night.

The following day, people turned out in droves to watch as Bright and his Pirtek Ford were paraded through the streets of Moe and Newborough.

It was the case of a town desperately in need of a good news story putting a local hero on show and the local hero helping give something back to the community willing to back him in an hour of need.

It wasn’t that long ago that Bright was struggling with the heavy financial burden of the motorsport scene and needed an urgent injection of funds to finish his successful assault on the Formula Holden title.

His parents Ken and Josie had already mortgaged the house to fund a Formula Ford campaign in America and had no more to give.

The community rallied to the cause of the Brights and Jason was able to see out the series in style.

The backing of the community was not forgotten as the platitudes were exchanged at the civic reception. “”Maybe we wouldn’t be standing here with a Bathurst champion if not for that support,” Ken said.

Bright is only too aware of how fortunate he was to have won Australia’s most famous motorsport event at his first real attempt.

“It is good when you consider Glenn Seton has been trying to win it for 13 years (without success).”

Bright would go on to enjoy a successful career in Australia and internationally.

He raced in the Indy Lights and Champ Car series in America, as well as competed at Le Mans.

Bright won 20 races and had 17 pole positions in a 573-race career in the Supercars, finishing third in the championship standings in 2001 and 2004.

He retired in 2017 and these days runs Taskforce, a trades and services franchise he set up in 2013.

HOMETOWN trainer Lenny Xuereb continued his recent good run of form when Solitary Tramp saluted at Moe on Saturday.

Solitary Tramp ($3.60) delivered Xuereb’s second winner in the space of nine days with a stylish 3 ¼ length success in the Smick Health & Fitness Maiden Plate (1100m).

There was a sensation before the race as three horses, including key chances Kislina and A Lone Hero, were scratched at the barriers.

But that only boosted the chances of Solitary Tramp and thanks to a heady ride from apprentice jockey Carleen Hefel, the daughter of Volitant broke through for a first win at start 10.

Xuereb, best known for putting the polish on the likes of Scenic Find and Past Master, prepares a

handful of horses these days from his Chevy Lodge base.

The majority of punters finished on the right side of the ledger with well-supported commodities winning the final two races.

Eokalio ($4.20fav) powered to the line in the Ladbrokes Multi Builder Rating 58 Handicap (1100m).

The four-year-old is prepared by the training partnership of Amy and Ash Yargi at Mornington and franked the form of his latest few runs in good style as jockey Ben Allen guided him to a 1 ¾ length victory.

Princess Kayo ($3.30fav) ended a frustrating run of minor placings when she staved off a game Lord Mapperley in the Cool Group Rating 58 Handicap (1200m).

Having finished third in her four previous starts this preparation, the daughter of Tavistock had been racing well without quite landing a telling blow.

But with emerging apprentice

jockey Jaden Lloyd in the saddle, she relished the soft conditions for win number two at start 13.

Lloyd is developing a great affinity with the Moe track and so too is Campbell Rawiller.

Rawiller, the son of champion hoop Nash, rode his first winner at Moe last September and made significant strides since that point.

He produced an absolute gem aboard Mylex to win the Hip Pocket Latrobe Valley Benchmark 58 Handicap (1600m).

Mylex ($12 into $8.50) landed some good bets as he overcame High Done in a slogging finish.

Mark down Huffington as a horse to follow.

The three-year-old daughter of Written Tycoon did a fine job on debut to hold off Spiritofthevalley in the Law Somerville Industries 3yo Fillies Maiden (1000m).

Jockey Chris Symons ensured Huffington, trained by Phillip Stokes, was in full control from

barrier one and she packed plenty of punch late on to win by three quarters of a length.

The trip from Bairnsdale proved a worthwhile one for trainer Jackson Pallot as Danluca ($13) took out the Cervus Equipment Rating 58 Handicap (2050m).

Ridden by jockey Jason Maskiell, the grey son of Lucas Cranach has been a handy campaigner for his connections and displayed superior staying ability in beating home Infinite Reign ($6) by three quarters of a length.

The other winner on the program was the well-supported Sure Move, who broke her maiden status at start three in the Young Signs Maiden Plate (1600m).

The meeting is traditionally one of the biggest for the Moe Racing Club, but due to the coronavirus restrictions only licenced people and restricted employees were allowed on course for the sevenrace card.

THE TRIP home from Sandown Park on Friday night was an enjoyable one for Rosedale trainer John Connor.

Connor’s exciting chaser Madalia Maggie produced a sizzling display to win the Stay Home, Stay Safe Grade 5 (515m).

Madalia Maggie pounced straight to the lead from box one and never gave her rivals a look in, bolting in by 3 ½ lengths in a sharp time of 29.77 seconds.

It was the first metropolitan success for the daughter of Banjo Boy, who now has won seven races and been minor placed eight times from 23 starts.

Friday proved a fruitful one for Latrobe Valley-based trainers during the Tier 3 meeting at Healesville.

The Whitford team from Willow Grove produced a race-to-race double.

Trevor Whitford’s Snap Decision relished the straight track to take out a Restricted Win Dash (300m) in 17.01 seconds.

Snap Decision, a son of Aussie Infrared, broke his maiden status at Healesville on April 3, running 17.07 sec and repeated the dose, holding off Lady Fabio by 1 ½ lengths.

Cracked Pepper was a long-priced winner of a Grade 5 Dash (300m).

The evergreen daughter of Walk Hard had been sent out a $25.10 shot by punters, but she again illustrated her love for Healesville, powering home from box eight in 17.19 seconds.

All six of Cracked Pepper’s career wins have come at the renowned straight track.

Newborough trainer Gerry Orr celebrated a winner when Thirty Red dashed away with a Maiden (350m).

Thirty Red had been the first emergency, but capitalised on the late call-up and started odds-on as he saluted for a first victory at start seven.

Brayden Lennox nearly made it a double for Orr, denied in a driving finish by Erolo Bale later in the program.

CRICKET

ESSEX have announced that Peter Siddle’s contract has been deferred to 2021 on account of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Morwell export had been due to spend a third season as the club’s overseas player, but due to the postponement of and with uncertainty over international travel, it was mutually agreed his contract should be pushed back a year.

“It’s a shame I won’t be returning to Chelmsford this year as I was really looking forward to the season with the Eagles, but there are plenty of things more important than cricket going on in the world at the moment,” Siddle, 35, said.

“In light of the current situation, it makes sense for me to come back over for the 2021 season when hopefully we’re back to normal and playing cricket again. It feels like a long way off at the moment, but I’m really excited to see all the boys and play at the County Ground again.”

Siddle owed his Test recall to an impressive 2018 season with Essex, when he took 37 wickets at 16.40 in the County Championship and again starred in 2019 when his 34 wickets in eight matches earned him a spot in Australia’s Ashes squad.
