Riley Taws, 18, lost his aunt Lynie Mullen to a battle with leukaemia in Augu gust u 2019.

“She was going good and in remission, living at home, it was meant to be a happy ending and then of all a sudden she got really sick again,” he told The Express.

“She went back into hospital, into the ICU and then one night we had to make the decision to turn her life support off because there was no way she could get through it.”

Inspired by his Aunty’s courage, Riley

decided to start a fundraiser for the Leukaemia Foundation and play his part in helping fund research so doctors could ‘fi find i a cure to this horrible disease’.

His initial plan was to participate in a bike ride, where he would ride a kilometre for every dollar donated.

But Riley soon changed his mind when his fundraising efforts exceeded his expectations.

“My initial goal was to raise $500, but have smashed that, we’re at more than $3100 now,” he said.

“That would have been more than 3000 kilometres I would have had to have ridden and that’s when I decided to do a triathlon.”

Riley’s bid has had the support of his family, who are backing him all the way. “(Lyniee) was my mum’s sister, so she (mum) is pretty emotional about it (her loss),” he said.

“But sh he’s happy at the same time (about his fundrraising efforts).”

Riley will swim 1.5km, ride 40km and run 10km on n November 28, starting his swim at Blue Rock Lake and won’t be going at it alone, with close friends Josh Whittaker, Wh h Bryce Coollings, Thomas Wilson and Mitchell Stanlakee by his side.

Lovison family ‘heartbroken’ after murder charges laid

THE family of Newborough man Jarrad Lovison has spoken out after three people were last week charged with the 37-year-old’s murder.

In a statement released on Friday, father John Lovison said the family was “heartbroken” by the news three locals - Samantha Guillerme, Jake Brown and Andrew Price - would front court for allegedly murdering his son.

“We are so heartbroken. We would like to thank all the police and detectives for their tireless pursuit,” Mr Lovison said.

“We hope that justice can be served for Jarrad.

“We would also like to thank all of Jay’s friends and all the people that helped with all the information given to police that has got us to where we are today.

“We would also like to thank the media for their help and we now ask you respect our privacy in our time of grieving.”

Police last week charged Ms Guillerme, 24, Mr Brown, 28 and Mr Price, 47 with the murder of Mr Lovison, six months since his remains were discovered in bushland at Moondarra.

The trio will again face court on January 7.

Two others, aged 44 and 55, were arrested and released without charge after a total of eight warrants were executed across the region in two days.

“Regional Victorians should be proud of this success,” Premier Daniel Andrews said yesterday.

With an outbreak in the city’s northern suburbs, Mr Andrews put a “cautious pause” yesterday on a major easing of restrictions for residents in the state capital.

Police target road trauma

OPERATION Saturn is a two-and-a-half week policing operation running until Sunday, November 8.

The statewide operation will aim to prevent further trauma on our roads caused by dangerous driving in both metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Community can expect to see police in locations where the booze buses aren’t typically spotted.

Regional police will be active in and around their communities to prevent serious collisions and trauma that often results from speeding, fatigue or distracted driving.

Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Libby Murphy said Victorians are facing two different, but equally dangerous settings on metro and regional roads.

“We know regional motorists and their passengers are over-represented in serious collisions,” AC Murphy said.

“Despite making up less than a third of the state’s population, more than half of lives lost on Victoria’s roads are in regional areas.

“We have worked so hard to get to this position and now need to protect each other on the road.”

DESTINATION Gippsland’s new ‘Little Wonders’ campaign is designed to raise the profile of the region and assist tourism businesses in recovering from the setbacks of 2020.

“This has been a very challenging year for tourism businesses, and we will see a significant focus on driving domestic tourism in the year to come,” Destination Gippsland chief executive officer Terry Robinson said.

“This campaign ensures that Gippsland is front and centre for Victorians planning their post-Covid travels. It is designed to drive overnight visitation and assist tourism businesses in recovering from the events of 2020.”

The Little Wonders campaign is the next iteration of the extensive brand work that was undertaken to develop the Gipps all kinds of Wonder brand.

This campaign, developed by local agency The View from Here, takes the brand development one step further to really encourage visitors to connect with what makes Gippsland so special.

It has been a year like no other!

AT Kurnai College it has been wonderful to see our students back in our classrooms, gyms, and playgrounds.

Our students have been delighted to catch up with friends and our parents have heaved a collective sigh of relief.

Now we head full tilt to the end of Term 4 - there is much to do.

Remote learning 1.0 and 2.0 are now behind us and whilst some have loved learning remotely, others have encountered challenges and obstacles that blocked their progress.

RETURNING home to Traralgon after living overseas left a local resident at a standstill until she became a member of the Femalepreneurs and is now one of 16 authors of their second book,‘The Elevation of The Femalepreneur’.

Casey Bird had been living in Belfast in Northern Ireland for the last 12 years working in human resources, studying nutrition while running her own online business she decided it was time to return home.

“I’d been over there for a long time and always wanted to come home. I felt I was at a little stalemate over there and I couldn’t grow,” Ms Bird said.

“I felt I had passion and purpose and I felt it would be easier to develop those things here at home.

The independent Ms Bird wasn’t ‘one to have a boss’ and knew it was time to return home to focus on herself and explore new business ventures.

“I had been working in sales but I wanted to build on that and go to the next level and that is when I found the Femalepreneurs,” Ms Bird said.

The online academy, Femalepreneur’s taught Ms Bird the skills required to take that next step she was looking for.

“When I met them, they opened me up to a whole world of new skills,” she said.

“They taught me how to build a business online, strategies, marketing techniques, social media techniques.”

Soon after Ms Bird was invited to write a chapter for the second book released by the online academy.

“I’m a big advocate for finding things to better look after your health,”she said.

“I found it really easy to write the chapter, I have always wanted to write my own book and I think maybe this was my starting point. It wasn’t a whole book but a chance to learn how writing the book goes.

When The Express asked Ms Bird what her chapter was about she didn’t want to ‘give too much away’ but wanted to give readers a chance to find out for themselves.

“Without giving too much away, it’s about choosing yourself, to put yourself first. I think as women we put ourselves last because everyone else comes before us and that was the purpose of my chapter.,” she said.

“I wanted to give some inspiration to some women. It’s OK to put yourself first even though it might mean you have to give up something you love, as difficult that may be. It’s worth it in the

end,” she said.

The book also features a chapter from 15 other women from numerous walks of life from across the globe with Ms Bird the only author involved from the southern hemisphere.

“All different ages, all different backgrounds but all women that had a story about how they have transformed or had gone through a bit of hardship and come out the other side, battling mental health issues or girls like me who are wanting something more from life,” Ms Bird said.

Ms Bird has now brought that ‘passion and purpose’ to life along with her new skillset with the opening of an infra-red sauna at her Traralgon home and continued on as a network marketer for Arbonne.

While restrictions haven’t made the opening of a new business easy for the young entrepreneur Ms Bird hopes that this shows women that they can do anything and not to be afraid to try something new.

“I would hope that by telling my story it helps someone else,” she said.

“It had been a pretty hard year and something inside me told me I needed to do this.”

“A few very close mates are going to participate and have been training with me, and pushing me along,” he said.

While his mates have participated in events like this previously, it is the first time Riley has tackled a triathlon.

“They’re going to race each other and I’ll be there going at my own pace because I’m just trying to get through, whereas they’re trying to beat one another,” he said.

“I’ve got no hope of beating them or even coming close to them, but it gives me someone to train with and I don’t really want to swim out there alone anyway.”

The second-year electrical apprentice has had plenty of time up his sleeve of late as work slowed down due to the coronavirus pandemic, but Riley said that allowed him more time to train.

“Some training sessions go for four to six hours,” he said.

“There’s lots of running and riding, and the pools have only just opened back up in Warragul, so I have been training down there.

“The more time at home over the next few weeks is better for me.”

Having smashed his initial fundraising goal out of the park, Riley hopes he

can take it a step further, setting a new target.

“Now that we’ve got this far, I’m hoping that we get closer to the $5000 mark,” he said.

Closer to the date, Riley will release his official route on his Facebook page with times for the triathlon, for anyone who wishes to cheer him and his mates along.

FOREST Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) is continuing work to prepare Gippsland for the upcoming bushfire season, building on fuel management works conducted throughout the year to reduce bushfire risk for communities and the environment.

FFMVic has recruited additional seasonal firefighters, with more than 250 fixed-term and permanent firefighters to be in place across the region from mid-November.

“Teams of emergency specialists will be on standby for Incident Control Centres across the region from as early as November, ensuring FFMVic and partner agencies are ready to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Gippsland’s acting Deputy Chief Fire Officer Kelly Rash said.

“Testing and servicing of our fleet of specialised firefighting vehicles is also underway, and we will have 10 aircraft based at the Latrobe Valley, Benambra, Heyfield and Bairnsdale in summer.

“In the coming weeks fire lookout observers will be stationed in Gippsland’s 18 fire towers.”

Ms Rash said the preparation builds on FFMVic’s fuel management works throughout the year.

“Since mid-last year, planned burning by FFMVic in Gippsland has covered 2377 hectares, with crews

taking every opportunity to conduct burns when conditions allow and it is safe to do so,” Ms Rash said.

“This has included planned burning to reduce bushfire risk around townships, with the highest priority burns conducted near Nowa Nowa, Buchan, Briagolong, Coongulla, Hill End and Noojee.

“In the same period, mechanical works covered more than 1900 hectares, with crews using heavy machinery to mulch flammable vegetation to reduce fuel near Loch Sport, Port Albert and Lakes Entrance townships.

“We are well-resourced and well-prepared for bushfire season and are continuing to build on our year-round program of works to reduce bushfire risk for communities and the environment.”

“Fire preparedness is a shared responsibility and that’s why we’re also working with the CFA and communities to help residents understand the actions they can take to reduce their own bushfire risk.”

FFMVic said all crews are adhering to appropriate public health and hygiene guidelines to ensure operations can safely continue across the state.

Lyn’s bloody fine effort

LYN Rawson was a teenager when she and her friends were moved by a speech during a club meeting.

She was 19 and part of the Yinnar Young Farmers Club on the day a guest speaker from the blood bank spoke about the lifesaving benefits of blood donation.

“We had a speaker from the Red Cross so I went to donate blood with a group of friends.That’s what started me,” Ms Rawson said.

Ms Rawson said the first time she donated blood was quite challenging, however, the thought of being able to help someone in need was the thing that encouraged her to do it.

“I can’t say that I enjoyed it (first blood donation) because I don’t like needles. But there’s this feeling of satisfaction that I’m helping somebody in need of blood,” she said.

She also had a brother, who was a regular blood donor andreached 200 donations before he stopped.

Ms Rawson, who has now reached her 130th

full donation, said it took her 47 years to reach the milestone, as she had to take some breaks in between having her two children and while on some medications.

“My donations have all been full blood, making it an even greater achievement, as many people now give just plasma and can go much more often than the approximate four times a year for full blood,” she said.

She was also able to encourage her whole family to get involved with the blood bank.

“Currently my son, Mark and his wife Clare, are donating on a regular basis,” said the Traralgon resident.

Ms Rawson encouraged everyone to think about donating blood and how such an unselfish act can save another person’s life.

“It doesn’t that long to go through the process, at the max it’s half an hour,” she said.

Ms Rawson said she will keep on donating blood to the Traralgon Donor Centre “for as long as I can”.

THE 14 finalists for the 2020 Gippsland Primary Health Awards have been selected from an outstanding field of nominations.

Gippsland Primary Health Network chief executive officer Amanda Proposch said 22 nominations were received, a record number since the awards were launched two years ago.

The winners will be announced at the Gippsland PHN annual general meeting and awards ceremony on Wednesday, November 18, which will be held online via zoom.

Ms Proposch said the nominations were highlighted the quality, breadth and depth of primary care health delivered by doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and organisations across the region.

“These Gippsland Primary Health Awards recognise and honour individuals and teams who work together to improve health across Gippsland by providing health and support services to our community,” Ms Proposch said.

SIX Latrobe Valley locals have banded together to raise funds for mental health research, joining thousands of Australians across the country all in support of the same cause.

Moe resident Natalie Surowka did not think twice when the idea of walking to raise funds for mental health was presented to her.

“My cousin committed suicide in 2018. He had mental health issues,” Ms Surowka said.

“Being close to my heart I jumped on board.”

Ms Surowka, who shared her own personal battle with depression, said she originally committed to walk 20 kilometres for the Black Dog Institute’s One Foot Forward campaign.

The campaign aims to raise funds for lifechanging research into treatment and prevention of mental illness, as well as vital support services.

It challenged people to walk the whole of October and raise funds in observance of mental health month.

Ms Surowka said it was not easy for her in the beginning, as she juggled work and motherhood however walking has now become her regular routine.

“It was hard to start and I actually said to people on Facebook ‘come on cheer me on’ to encourage me to keep going,” she said.

“My husband also bought me a pair of new sneakers to get me motivated.”

Ms Surowka, who works as a mental health community support worker, said one in five people experience symptoms of mental illness each year, a figure likely to climb during these COVID-19 times.

Other members of the group, called Team Gippy, did not hesitation when the time came to get up and about for mental health.

Latrobe City councillor Sharon Gibson also got on board to help raise funds for the cause.

“I thought it’s really special at the moment, it’s

(mental health research) is so needed,” she said.

Ms Gibson said she initially put her goal to walk for 100 kilometres for the whole month of October, but she has now reached 110 kilometres and was determined to do more.

Team Gippy, which features six members, has so far raised a total of $2719 as a group.

Ms Gibson said the team members do not walk together as everyone has different schedules.

She said participating in the campaign made her realise that she was not only helping others battle mental health issues, but doing the walks has also helped her own mental health.

Council election turnout is up VOTERS across Victoria have turned out strongly for the 2020 local council elections with the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) anticipating one of its healthiest council turnouts.

Ballot packs were mailed to 4.25 million voters between 6-8 October and the VEC had already received 65 per cent back by Friday morning ahead of the 6pm deadline.

Postal votes mailed by 6pm on Friday can be accepted until noon on Friday, October 30.

The average turnout rate in 2016 was 73 per cent, but based on current return rates, this year’s average is anticipated to be around the 76 per cent mark or higher.

Electoral Commissioner, Warwick Gately, says the public’s response has been positive overall.

“Voters have been very responsive and have exceeded expectations with the number of early

returns surpassing that in 2016,” Mr Gately said.

“With another five working days for votes to be returned I expect return numbers to continue to grow.”

Mr Gately says that although some issues had been raised regarding the non-receipt of ballot packs and changes of addresses, the VEC worked closely with Australia Post to deliver a further 75,000 ballot packs to alternative addresses.

“The counting of votes will take place over the next three weeks locally within each council wherever possible,” Mr Gately said.

The VEC anticipates that all elections will have been declared no later than Friday, November 13.

This is later than previous elections because of increased social distancing requirements due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

THE Federal Royal Commission’s interim observations on the summer’s bushfires are factually incorrect, misleading and omit vital information, according to a Latrobe Valley fire and forestry expert.

Traralgon forestry and business consultant, John Cameron, said the commission had thus failed to deliver a good understanding of the true causes of last summer’s fires and ignored known and proven solutions to mitigating damaging wildfires.

“There has been no forensic-type examination of why the Victorian bushfires were not controlled within two weeks of ignition under benight weather conditions,” said Mr Cameron, a former general manager of the then APM Forests and a member of a CFA industry brigade.

“The focus has been on ‘disaster response’ rather than the more effective ‘disaster mitigation’.There has been insufficient attention to proactive prevention of bushfires.”

Mr Cameron said policy should be guided by the findings of the 2009 Victorian Bushfire Royal Commission and other enquiries, where critical aspects of bushfire mitigation were dealt with professionally.

“The VBRC was supported by expert panels and evidence from fire behaviour experts,” he said, who

focussed on the real factors to mitigate bushfires - reduce the fuel loads, prepare firebreaks, ensure good fire-ground access, early detection, rapid initial attack, and effective and unencumbered suppression.

Mr Cameron said the ‘draft propositions’ ignored substantive research and practical experience already available on fire mitigation. “The best experts on proactive fire mitigation were not called to give evidence and their submissions have been largely ignored,” he said.

The federal inquiry failed to learn valuable lessons from examining South West Western Australia as a case study in ‘best practise’ and Victoria as a case study in ‘worst practise’ and learn from the differences.

“Victoria’s disastrous bushfire outcomes could have been accurately predicted by the ‘Sneeuwjagt Curve’, which has been known for decades and shows that wildfire loss can be reduced by increasing the amount of low intensity prescribed burning,” he said.

“There is a case for seeking funding specifically for skill formation in fire mitigation, based on adapting and applying what is already known.”

Mr Cameron said if the success of the Bushfire Co-operative Research Centres was judged on effectiveness - their ability to reduce destructive bushfires and loss of life - then the CRCs had

A new CRC should have a model where scientists were embedded within land management and fire management agencies to ensure focus, relevance and uptake of research.“A research model like this helped deliver the successful WA ‘best practice’ fire mitigation scheme,” he said.

Mr Cameron said DELWP (Department of the Environment, Land, Water and Planning), as the forest fire management agency, had organisational issues that had contributed to the megafires of 2003, 2006-07, 2009 and 2019-20.

Conglomerate departments, like business conglomerates in the 1980s, hindered rather than supported best practise. Accountability was diffused, creating a poor culture.

Mr Cameron said DELWP had 53 per cent of its employees in the Melbourne CBD and only 11 per cent field staff. There was not enough effort to develop skills in fire mitigation, he said.

The interim observations of the RC into National Natural Disaster Arrangements said the 20192020 bushfires and the conditions leading up to them were unprecedented. “They are no longer unprecedented,” the interim report said.

The climate was predicted to become hotter and the intensity of natural disasters greater.

“Floods and bushfires are expected to become more frequent and more intense,” the report said.

Dredger set to drop Thursday

UP to $150,000 is now available to local groups and organisations working to help the landscape and wildlife recover from the summer bushfires.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester wants community and conservation groups, indigenous organisations and local councils in Gippsland to put up their hand for a grant from the Bushfire Recovery for Wildlife and Habitat Community Grant Program.

“This funding program is an important way to get local bushfire recovery projects underway that directly benefit our native flora and fauna,” Mr Chester said.

“There are many hard-working people across our region who dedicate their time and energy for caring for the bush and our waterways and the many creatures who live there.

“Local people know our region well and are ideally placed to get targeted bushfire rehabilitation projects up and running.”

The federal government has allocated up to $10 million to the grant program. It’s part of the government’s $200 million investment in the recovery of wildlife and habitat affected by the bushfires.

Applicants can apply for amounts between $5000 and $150,000 to undertake eligible projects. These include ■ providing supplementary shelter, nest boxes and artificial hollows ■ controlling pest animals ■ controlling of invasive weeds (including through indigenous fire management practices) ■ collecting seeds and propagating native plants for use in revegetation ■ revegetating burnt areas using native plants, and ■ regenerating or protecting sensitive areas, including waterways.

The program will run over two years to help local communities deliver bushfire recovery for their local environment, and support broader long-term recovery and resilience.

Applications will be assessed according to how projects will help the recovery of bushfireaffected native flora and fauna, and the capacity, capability and resources of applicants to deliver the project.

Projects must be completed by April 1, 2022.

ENGIE is advising locals they may hear a loud noise on Thursday between 10 and 11am as the next dredger is scheduled to be demolished inside the Hazelwood mine void.

Dredger 10 is set for a controlled collapse with explosive cutting charges. Engineers had assessed this was the safest method for the demolition process.

ENGIE stated that it has put in place controls to reduce noise, but residents may still hear a loud boom for a couple of seconds.

The demolition will not be visible to the community as the dredger is within the mine area.

“There haven’t been too many opportunities to participate in community or sporting events while living under COVID-19 restrictions. As a result, many people may be feeling disconnected from family and friends or the community causes they usually support,” Lisa said.

Gunai Kurnai Elder Bonnie O’Shanassy officially opened LRH’s Warrin Wannik walking track.

LRH has honoured the traditional lands of the Gunai Kurnai people by naming its walking track, Warrin Wannik which means ‘walking in the sun’.

The paved track is just over two kilometres in length and takes in a large block bordered by Village Avenue, Valley Drive, Airfield Road and the Princes Highway.

Dotted along the track are pavers depicting the shields of the five tribes of the Gunai Kurnai Nation: Brayakaulung, Tatungalung, Brabralung, Brataulung and Krauatungalung. The pavers were created by Latrobe Valley Enterprises.

The track was officially opened recently by Gunai Kurnai Elder, Bonnie O’Shanassy in the presence of LRH Board Directors and staff, including Koori Liaison Officers Gail Mounsey and Lynette Bishop.

Scone-a-thon fundraiser is a big winner

TRARALGON’S Country Women’s Association were over the moon at the positive response to their Scone-a-thon fundraiser despite social restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

CWA Traralgon branch president Barb Derham said they were able to sell a total of 726 scones by October 17 to raise funds for the association’s branches across the state.

“We just want to thank the people of Latrobe Valley for supporting the CWA,” she said.

Ms Derham said this was the first time that the CWA did the fundraiser through its local branches following the cancellation of the Royal Melbourne Show due to COVID-19.

Last year, the CWA Victoria produced a total of 15,542 scones over 11 days at the show with the money raised to support the association’s various activities including other charities all across the state.

Ms Derham said CWA was hoping to beat 2019’s record, however, all state branches were only able to produce a total of 13,433 scones this time.

“We were trying to get as close as we could to last year’s record, but that’s not bad considering that we did it in five days instead of 11,” she said.

Ms Derham said the Traralgon branch had a total of five bakers working on the scones including Joy Davis, who was labelled as the “Queen of scones” at the Royal Melbourne Show for making the most delicious product at the annual event.

“She goes down to the Melbourne show every year and for 11 days cooks scones,” she said.

Ms Derham said it was not easy for the five bakers from the Traralgon CWA branch to make the pre-ordered scones, however everyone was grateful for the positive response from the community.

“Talk about being exhausted!,” Ms Derham said.

Indoor pools across region are again open LATROBE Leisure indoor pools at Morwell, Churchill and Moe-Newborough have reopened to people aged 18 and under.

This comes after the state government eased some restrictions around indoor pools in regional Victoria.

The pools will be open for up to 20 participants in the water at a time and each participant must be 18 years old or younger.

There is an allowance for one spectator per participant for supervision purposes.

If an infant or toddler needs assistance in the water, their parent/guardian/carer is able to enter the water.

Showers and change facilities will be open.

Pools will be open for swim sessions at the allocated times of: Monday - Friday, 9am, 10am, 4pm, 5pm Saturdays, 9am, 10am, 11am, 12pm.

The cost of a child swim will be discounted to $3.50 in the interim until more usual operation resumes.

Bookings can be made via Latrobe Leisure on Facebook.

Latrobe Leisure is working towards reestablishing the Learn to Swim program while still meeting the current restrictions.

Latrobe Leisure will work with user groups on the return of some junior training for stadium sport.

It is unknown when gyms or indoor group exercise classes maybe able to resume.

LIKE everyone over the last six months, Gippsland’s own irreverent and original Here There & Everywhere Theatre Company have had to adapt to the world during coronavirus restrictions, and with no live performances allowed, they have moved their rehearsals and planning meetings online.

“We haven’t let the lockdown hold us back from still being creative. We’ve had to be inventive and adapt to the situation to continue producing material and give creative opportunities,” director Phillip A Mayer said.

The arts have been particularly hard hit by the pandemic, with many arts workers losing their jobs, with no gigs for musicians, no live theatre, theatres closing their doors and the whole industry being dramatically affected.

“Without audiences, live arts events are pretty much impossible, and the atmosphere of a live venue and real-time performance is lost. No-one really knows when we’ll be able to get back into a theatre, back on stage and in front of a crowd,” Mr Mayer said.

To combat this, the HT&E ensemble have been meeting regularly for creative conversations, social interaction and rehearsals, in preparation for when restrictions are lifted.

“We’ve needed to be really flexible and use technology to keep performers connected. We’ll have a show ready to go within weeks, so audiences will have something to look forward to,” Mr Mayer said.

“I think people are going to want to get out, see some live theatre and have a glass of wine, a few laughs and social interaction.Theatre gives people a wonderful outlet to see characters and stories they can relate to, to help them process life and make sense of the world, as well as getting some unique entertainment and lots of laughter.

“The other thing we’ve been doing is making short films within the COVID restrictions framework, and releasing them online via our Facebook page and YouTube channel.

“We had thousands of views of our Corona comedy short film Rona, so we made a sequel which we’re about to release.

“It’s about a couple struggling with living together during lockdown, with only each other to talk to.

People really related to the characters and situation and the new one will be an extension.

“We also branched out and tested our musical team by writing an original song, recording, producing a music video and entering the My Rode Reel competition.

“The song called Good to be Alive, is an uplifting pop rock homage to the 80’s and people can jump online and vote for us on our Facebook page, if they enjoy it of course.

“Our youth Drama Workshops have also been postponed for most of the year, and this is a really

Giving them a creative outlet builds their confidence and selfesteem, builds their team and communications adroitness and instills them with skills they take with them through life. The young stars, their parents and the Workshop team have all been patiently waiting for restrictions to be eased to allow the kids to get back to theatre.”

Despite the difficult times, the HT&E team have remained positive.

“We’re still working out what theatre might look like going forward, and obviously we can’t wait to get back to live performance, but a lot is going depend on restrictions and of course the essential support of audiences. The arts have been doing it incredibly hard, but sometimes you just have to work with what’s in front of you,” Mr Mayer said.

Creativity a key for state’s recovery THE state government is calling for community input and fresh perspectives to help strengthen the creative industries as the sector prepares to recover and rebuild on the other side of the coronavirus pandemic.

Creative Industries Minister Danny Pearson last week announced that the state government would renew its landmark Creative State strategy and urged all creative workers, and young people who aspire to work in the creative industries, to have their say.

“The creative industries are at the heart of Victoria’s economy, the vibrancy of our communities and our way of life - and will be essential in our post-pandemic recovery,” Mr Pearson said.

“I invite all Victorians who work in the creative industries to have their say and help guide our priorities and investment over the next four years

to ensure we can come back stronger than ever.”

Pre-pandemic, Victoria’s creative industries - comprising sectors such as the visual and performing arts, literature and publishing, music, screen production, digital games, design and fashion - employed some 290,000 people and contributed more than $30 billion to the state’s economy each year.

The pandemic hit the state’s creative industries hard, with the restrictions put in place to save lives forcing many events to be cancelled and venues to close.

Work on the four-year strategy was well under way earlier this year, following an extensive public and sector consultation process in 2019.

The program was put on hold in March as the pandemic hit and government focused on meeting the immediate needs of the sector, including rolling

out a $90 million coronavirus support package.

Now as Victoria takes cautious steps toward COVID Normal, the development of a sector-informed statewide strategy to guide state government priorities is more important than ever.

All people who work in Victoria’s creative industries are encouraged to contribute to the development of the 2021-2025 creative industries strategy by completing an online survey.

Given the impact of the pandemic on young people, there is also a dedicated survey for Victorians aged 15-25.

The surveys ask about the impact the coronavirus has had on creative workers, current industry needs and issues, and ideas for the future.

Busy period for Ben Cruachan Walking Club NOT all walks conducted

by Ben Cruachan Walking Club are open to the public, but when they are, you are welcome to join in, experience Gippsland’s magnificent natural environment, get fit and meet up with their friendly club members.

On Saturday, November 7 they will walk the Slaughter Track to Deptford north of Bairnsdale taking in an old gold mining locality on the Nicholson River.

Some of the features of the walk include seeing the river diverted through a tunnel, abandoned mineshafts and an old stone oven.

On Wednesday, November 11 they have a Social Evening by Zoom.

There will be updates on club activities and a presentation by the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority on the new Thomson River Fishway at Horseshoe Bend near Walhalla. Visitors may request to join the meeting by contacting the club.

From Friday, December 4 to Sunday, December 6 we are overnight camping in the Alpine National Park, Victoria, crossing into the Kosciuszko National Park in NSW. The walk requires reasonable fitness and will involve carrying an overnight pack.

We will camp at Cowombat Flat and climb up to The Pilot before walking to the official starting point of the Murray River where it’s possible to have one foot in each state.

DID you know there is a retirement village located in the heart of Yinnar?

The Yinnar & District Housing Development’s Greenside Retirement Village was opened in 1993 after a group of concerned Yinnar residents decided it was time for the town to be able to provide retirement accommodation for its elderly residents.

Yinnar resident Ray Linton along with a dedicated group of locals came together as a working group to investigate the possibility of building a facility in Yinnar so elderly residents didn’t have to move from the area.

The village consists of seven two bedroom units and four one bedroom units.

The two bedroom units have a garage built under the roofline and the single bedroom units have carports.

Today, 27 years after the first residents moved into the village it is still a safe and friendly place to live with a real sense of community.

The units are very comfortable and maintained to the highest standard.

The village is owned and run by the community.

A volunteer committee of management is responsible for the running and upkeep

NOMINATIONS are now open for the Baw Baw Shire Australia Day awards, offering an opportunity to recognise groups and individuals for their contribution to the community.

Each year, council’s Australia Day Awards program shines a light on the unsung heroes and organisations who selflessly give their time and expertise to help others and make Baw Baw a better place.

These individuals and groups consistently volunteer for charity work, contribute to community initiatives, demonstrate leadership and continually strive to improve the overall community.

Nominations can be made in three categories: Citizen of the Year: A person who had made a noteworthy contribution during the previous year, and/or given outstanding service to the community over a number of years.

Young Citizen of the Year: A person aged under 25 years who has given outstanding service to the community.

Community Group of the Year: An organisation/ group who performed a service to the community, raising funds for a charity, event or project.

The nominations process has been simplified with a short online form that includes space for optional

crisis, they have had to postpone the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the Sacred Heart Church.

In view of this, they will be celebrating together with St Vincent’s Church in 2021 when they celebrate their 50th anniversary.

Local giving in Latrobe vital for sick children UNCLE Bobs Club (UBC) is partnering with Latrobe Regional Hospital to raise $4500 for a new vitals monitoring device as part of the club’s Local Giving for Local Health program.

From now until November 5, the community will be able to donate online via mycause.com.au/latrobe in a Virtual Wheelbarrow Push or can contact Tyers Group Secretary on 5174 5360.

A map on the UBC website will track money raised with distance travelled around the region.

The Wheelbarrow Push is a proud part of UBC’s 78-year fundraising history, and is part of the Good Friday Appeal efforts each year.

Latrobe Regional Hospital will purchase a Masimo RAD 97. The device will monitor oxygen, blood flow, blood pressure and pulse rate for pediatric patients, giving medical staff more time to focus on patient care.

In 2019-20, the hospital saw a record 42,106 patients through their emergency department. 8489 of those patients were paediatric.

When the fundraising campaign ends on November 5, 2020, any additional funds raised will go to the hospital.

To give the community a chance to fundraise online when in-person activities are not possible, UBC is holding a Virtual Wheelbarrow Push as part of the club’s commitment to Local Giving for Local Health.

The goal is to purchase a vitals monitoring device for paediatric patients.

THE Victorian Young Achiever Awards are a celebration of the tremendous potential that all young people have to positively shape and serve their local communities.

The awards recognise and advocate for Victoria’s next generation of leaders, inspiring them to realise their passions whilst boosting awareness of the most pressing issues that our current society faces.

The 2020 Victorian Young Achiever of the Year Wallace Jin reflected on what the honour meant to him.

“It is a great privilege, and deeply humbling, to be named the 2020 Victorian Young Achiever of the Year,” he said.

HEYFIELD Community Resource Centre is offering a free four-week course to provide people with a range of job-ready skills.

Students will prepare for and sit a mock job interview, get tips on creating a resume and application letter that stands out, learn a range of digital literacy skills, create budgets and set saving goals - plus much more.

The course will begin on Tuesday, November 10 and run three days a week (Tuesday through to Thursday) until Thursday, December 3 from 9.30am-3pm.

The centre is also offering a free two-day short ‘digital matters’ course to help people live, learn and work in a digital world.

Students will get an introduction to Zoom and various digital devices and media, find out how to navigate safely online, and learn about Microsoft Word and Excel, and ways to connect via social media, plus much more.

The course will be held on Monday, November 9 and Monday, November 16, from 10am to 1.30pm. Places are limited.

A RANGE of activities will be available for Baw Baw Shire’s youngest residents to enjoy virtually during Children’s Week 2020 (October 24 to November 1).

Children’s Week is a national celebration that recognises the talents, skills, achievements and rights of children.

The theme for Children’s Week 2020 celebrates the right of all children to choose their own friends and safely connect with others. This is based on Article 15 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

In light of coronavirus (COVID-19), Children’s Week celebrations in Baw Baw Shire have been modified to offer virtual options.

Mark Hooper’s art show at LRG postponed

LATROBE Valley artist Mark Hooper’s show at the Latrobe Regional Gallery, After Hours, scheduled at the end of this month has been postponed due to COVID-19.

Mr Hooper, a recipient of Regional Arts Victoria-Toe in the Water grant in 2019 and RMIT Vietnam Travel Scholarship for field recording, was supposed to debut his new audio visual collaboration ‘Clock In’ featuring Steve Schulz on percussion and Harry McCullough on visuals.

THE Lost Dogs’ Home is calling for extra vigilance through the warmer months as presentations for dog stings started to climb.

Despite just a handful of warm days so far, vets at Frank Samways Veterinary Clinic said animals stung by bees was already climbing.

Dr Ashe Mooney said the clinic had seen multiple cases in just one week.

“Since animals are usually trying to bite the bees they tend to be mostly bitten on the face where sudden swelling is not very common,” Dr Mooney said.

“It could be mistaken for just general allergies or an acute injury.

“Like humans, animals can react with different degrees of severity and so should be treated accordingly.

“We need to make sure the stinger has been removed and give an appropriate dose of animal antihistamines.

“We don’t recommend owners treating with human antihistamines.”

Bee stings can range from a mild irritation like itching to anaphylaxis causing the face and airway to swell.

Symptoms can range from sudden itching and irritation at a specific area or extreme swelling.

Dr Mooney said a vet trip is necessary to monitor their reaction.

“While uncommon, bee stings can be fatal if the animal’s airway closes due to severe anaphylactic shock,” she said.

“Owners could be more aware of what plants attract bees to their garden and either supervise

RAIDERS opened its Premier A Grade title defence with a resounding nine-wicket win against CATS on Friday.

Captain Liam Maynard and Harry McColl played decisive roles for the victors, who claimed a bonus point.

McColl continued his emergence as a player of genuine quality, claiming 4-26 from 8.5 overs as CATS mustered 105 after being sent into bat

by Raiders.

The teenage paceman made the early in-roads, trapping Jamie Cochrane (2) lbw in the first over and soon sent fellow opening bat Dylan Keyhoe to the pavilion for a duck.

McColl made it three when Tyler Brown (7) was bowled before skipper Ben Julin led a rearguard action.

With Declan Wilson at the other end, Julin gave the CATS innings some momentum.

He dominated a 43-run stand with the determined Wilson, who faced 55 balls for his two before becoming Maynard’s first victim.

Maynard then took the key scalp of Julin, not before the CATS skipper brought up a welldeserved half-century.

He hit five boundaries in an impressive 58.

But his departure triggered a collapse of 6-19, which was bookmarked by McColl’s fourth wicket, Sam Gissara (7).

Maynard finished with 4-20 from his 10 overs, while Harvinder Singh and Tim Darby also took wickets.

Chris Stanlake (7) fell early, but all in all, the Raiders chase proved a comfortable one.

Maynard followed up his bowling efforts with an unbeaten 45 and Brad Knowles scored 50 not out, highlighted by a big six.

The evergreen Brad Foster (1-11) was the pick of the CATS bowlers.

TRARALGON West was the scene for a Friday thriller as the Eagles dodged a bullet to seal a one-wicket win against Trafalgar.

Chasing 113 for victory, Traralgon West were seemingly in full control at 4-92.

But with the overs running out and wickets falling, it took tailenders Salman Rasool (7no) and Adam Thow (0no) to get the Eagles home with two balls to spare.

Earlier, Blair Clymo’s brilliant 60 at least gave Trafalgar a target to bowl at.

The all-rounder, back at his home club following a spell at Casey-South Melbourne, produced the innings of the day.

He hit three towering sixes during a 109-ball stay at the crease.

Clymo was one of only two Traf batsmen to reach double figures, with No.8 Riley White scoring an unbeaten 16.

Ben Edebohls (4-20) was the pick of the Traralgon

West bowlers, while Liam Sumner’s left-arm spin conjured 2-25 from 10 overs, including the key wicket of Clymo.

The Eagles were soon 2-18 in their chase after the double breakthrough of Tim Fitch and Josh Monacella.

Ihraam Zafar and the reliable Luke Phillips led the rearguard action with a 37-run stand before Zafar was run out by Zac Brown on 23, just as he was threatening to tear the contest apart.

Hayden Kimpton (7) came and went quickly as Edebohls joined Phillips, the pair putting together a 23-run partnership.

But Edebohls’ run out for nine, triggered a collapse of 4-5.

A score of 8-97 soon moved to 9-109 before Hasitha Hewawasam (7) became Jackson Noonan’s fourth victim and set up a pulsating final over.

Noonan was the leading light of the Trafalgar attack, claiming 4-17, but the Ships would lament the fact they conceded 26 extras, including 17 wides, a decisive factor in such a low-scoring contest.

Captain Campbell leads Tigers to four-wicket win

JORDAN Campbell played a vital role in ensuring his captaincy reign at Morwell got off to a winning start on Friday.

The Englishman scored a stylish 45 not out and combined with coach Robert Semmler (22) to guide the Tigers to a four-wicket win against Latrobe at Peter Siddle Oval.

The Sharks posted 4-155 from its 50 overs after being sent into bat.

Openers Anubhav Meenakshi and Anthony Bloomfield gave Latrobe a solid platform from which to build, putting on 70 for the first wicket before Mark Cukier claimed Bloomfield for 32.

Cukier then drew a false shot from Meenakshi, whose resistance came to an end of 36.

Zimbabwean ace Ronnie Chokununga provided some dynamism to the innings with an unbeaten 56 from 84 deliveries.

Cukier (2-22) and Dylan Day (2-26) proved Morwell’s leading lights with the bat.

The Tigers chase got off to a tough start when Cukier fell for a duck in the opening over.

Sam Mooney (29) displayed some good touch, until he was caught and bowled by Hiran Rajapakse.

Rajapakse produced an inspired spell (4-20) which looked to put the clamps on the Morwell innings.

That was until Semmler joined Campbell, the Middlesbrough lad who has found a home away from home in the Latrobe Valley.

The duo put on 46 at a rapid rate to get the Tigers home with two overs to spare.

Cobras win a thriller

CHURCHILL survived a fright from JeeralangBoolarra on the way to a two-wicket win.

The Cobras looked well on the way to a dominant victory when they were 3-87 thanks primarily to an explosive 50 from captain Brendan Mason, having earlier knocked over the

Blackberry sparked a mini collapse when he dismissed John Keighran (15) and Ben McQuillan (11).

When Ossy Brennan had Ryan Harvey caught

by Blackberry for a duck, Churchill had slumped to 6-92.

Paul Metlikovec and Steve Warr steadied the nerves, but that man Blackberry was not finished yet.

He claimed Metlikovec (20) caught and bowled, and then trapped Harry Van Rossum for a duck.

His departure left the score 8-114, but Warr (5no) found a willing ally in Joshua Rae (1no), with the pair guiding the Cobras home.

McGrath (2-36) also bowled well.

Earlier, three players - Blackberry, captain Ben Heath and Sam Mazou all top-scored with 20 for the Panthers, who were bowled out in 45.2 overs by a disciplined Churchill attack.

Six bowlers finished with wickets for the Cobras, headed by the impressive Ryan Harvey (2-10),Warr (2-12), Metlikovec (2-28) and Ross Whelpdale (2-29).

Tigers land a bonus point

MIRBOO North claimed the bonus point in a three-wicket win against Moe. After being sent in by the hosts at Mirboo North Recreation Reserve, the Lions scored 126 in 43.4 overs.

All six bowlers used by the Tigers finished with at least a wicket, including new recruit Madura Perera (1-38).

Spiteri was one of three Moe batsmen to pass 20, with openers Ben Maslen (22) and Chris Robinson (21) getting starts.

Mirboo North wasted little time in the chase, taking 26 overs to run down the target, earning them an extra point.

Captain Jesse Giardina set the tone with a hardhitting 34, while four other batsmen posted scores of between 10 and 16.

Joel Mitchell (3-34) was the most successful of the Moe bowlers, while Jayden Mathison (2-23) impressed.

Public holiday fixture a win for TDCA CRICKET TDCA

PLAYING on the AFL grand final Public Holiday proved a masterstroke for the Traralgon & District Cricket Association with Saturday being a wet and miserable one.

All matches were able to be played on Friday to kick off the 2020/21 TDCA season.

Two matches went to script but the historic Yarram & District and Imperials clash certainly threw up a shock with Yarram chasing down 205 to give the Pelicans their first ever win in the TDCA. Winning the toss Imperials had no hesitation in batting first on a picture perfect wicket at Stoddart Oval.

With captain Brett Chapman unavailable somebody needed to stand tall and acting skipper Ryan Morley did just that making a very good 55 opening the batting.

His partner David Pryde also batted well for 27 before being dismissed with the score on 74.

Without Chapman in the line-up it was a question of who would be able to damage the Yarram bowlers and although Zac Tactor (39), Connor Hughes (25) and Scott Aitken (18) batted well they didn’t do enough damage and get the big score to take the run target out of reach of the Pelicans.

Yarram were brilliant in their last 15 overs as they restricted Imperials and kept the run rate down.

Brett Pedlow showed his class taking 3-34 while after being a little wayward

Sweet result: Yarram & District Pelicans started life in the TDCA competition with a first-up win on Friday. opening the bowling Daniel O’Keefe finished the innings strong to claim 4-42 from 10 overs.

Imperials were certainly confident with 205 on the board, but Yarram started strongly with a 30-run opening stand before David Brinker-Ritchie was dismissed by Joel Randall.

Enter Anthony Scott, who showed his intent from ball one smashing a drive back past Randall to announce his arrival at the wicket.

Scott and Pedlow put on 65 in quick time before Scott was dismissed on 48 from 52 balls.

Imps were able to slow the scoring from that point as Brad Sizeland and Nat Campbell were able to put the squeeze on and when Sizeland trapped Pedlow in front Imps were in the box seat.

However with a strong foundation set and some great lower order hitting from Brayden Askew, who whacked 36 not out from 23 balls, the Pelicans were able to win a final over thriller against last season’s semi-finalists and announce themselves on the TDCA stage.

Students thump Rams Ex Students made short work of Toongabbie in their grand final rematch, knocking over the Rams for 111 in 41.3 overs.

Toongabbie started off well with the first wicket falling for 51 after some uncharacteristic wayward bowling helped the score tick along.

When Tom Shippen was dismissed with the score at 4-90,Toongabbie would have still been confident of getting a score of 160 plus to give themselves a chance.

However, the Sharks applied the pressure and eventually restricted the score to 111 with four of the final five Toongabbie batsmen making ducks.

Mitchell Harris in his first match for Ex Students claimed 4-23 while Jimmy Pryde and Kade Duncan both took 2-18.

It was always going to be hard work for the Rams and Ex Students made short work of the chase as they knocked over the score in just 26 overs.

Jake Best had his first hitout for the season but after playing on very flat and hard wickets in the city he couldn’t quite get the pace of the Traralgon Recreation Reserve wicket and only managed 10.

Jordan Gilmore (37 not out) and Lee Stockdale (21) were at their explosive best and look like they will be in for big seasons again in 2020/21 and Jackson McMahon coming off the TDCA 2019/20

Batting Aggregate got a good start to kick off his 20/21 campaign.

Magpies swoop on Rovers Rovers won the toss at Duncan Cameron Park and had no hesitation in batting first on a beautiful looking wicket.

It was a shaky start when Liam Little was out for a duck with the score on 1-1 with Rovers struggling to build good partnerships with the largest being 32 for the day.

Captain Dougal Williams compiled a good 28 while younger brother Ewan made 17 but the class of Glengarry’s bowling attack was just too much for the young Rovers batting line-up.

Sam Marks was the main destroyer claiming 4-33 after not bowling too often at all in his last few years of cricket.

Levendi fails to fire

HORSE RACING: Latrobe Valley galloper Levendi finished a disappointing secondlast in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Cup (2500m) on Saturday.

The Group 1 winning stallion was given a nice run in behind the speed by jockey Jason Maskiell, but dropped out of contention as soon as the pressure rose.

Levendi only beat Hush Writer home, 29.45 lengths adrift of winner Miami Bound.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery by the son of Pierro.

Skinner leaves Lions

FOOTBALL: Newborough football export Sam Skinner has been delisted by the Brisbane Lions.

Skinner, 23, featured alongside Matt Eagles, Toby Wooller, Jacob Allison, Corey Lyons and Allen Christensen, as Lions players not offered a contract for the 2021 AFL season.

The tall utility endured a devastating run of injuries throughout his time at the Lions, but became an inspiration to his teammates as he fought back from three knee reconstructions to play three AFL games.

Basketball to undergo revamp BASKETBALL

FOLLOWING a Board endorsed internal review, Basketball Victoria has undertaken a management restructure and departmental realignment to assist in delivering greater services to associations, to create internal efficiencies and to enhance pathway and league delivery, as well as sport promotion.

As part of the internal realignment, three new departments were formed to accommodate the needs of the community and the organisation - High Performance/Pathways, Member and Community Services as well as Leagues and Competitions.

High Performance/Pathways, led by newly appointed general manager Grant Wallace, will continue to deliver existing programs and pathways across the state with 10 High-Performance Hubs enabling greater opportunities for the State Development Program.

It won’t matter where you live, all athletes will be given the same opportunity to make it to the top level, with consistent coaching instruction and philosophies strengthening Victoria’s development pathways across the state.

Led by general manager David Huxtable, Member and Community Services will deliver increased focus on member support and grassroots basketball for Victoria’s 161 associations and 500 clubs.

An immediate priority will be on a Return to

Sport plan and offering further assistance with business continuity after the impacts of COVID-19.

This department will include coach education, grassroots programs such as Aussie Hoops and will also oversee the Inclusion and Diversity team.

Basketball Development Officers in regional areas will continue in their roles in growing the game in country Victoria.

Leagues and Competitions will combine the resourcing of the four leagues - NBL1, Big V, CBL and VJBL - as well as all Victorian Championships, tournaments, 3x3, school competitions and Technical Officials - under the leadership of general manager - Dean Anglin.

This department will enable the sharing of capabilities and expertise and through greater collaboration, will deliver better basketball tournaments, leagues and events.

BV will also continue to maintain investment in communications and digital support, continuing the success and roll-out of PlayHQ and the Digital Transformation Project, as well as continue the production and delivery of great basketball content that will continue to promote the sport.

“We believe that, as a result of our restructure, we will be better placed to serve our member associations and clubs as we navigate our way to reactivation and recovery in 2021 and beyond,” Basketball Victoria chief executive officer Nick Honey said.

FOOTBALL: Richmond made it back-toback AFL premierships with a 31-point win against Geelong in this year’s grand final at The Gabba on Saturday night.

Tigers superstar Dustin Martin booted four goals and collected his third Norm Smith Medal in the 12.9 (81) to 7.8 (50) win.

Geelong dominated the first-half and held a 15-point lead at the halftime break, but Richmond booted nine of the game’s last 11 goals.

Jayden Short, Shane Edwards and Dion Prestia featured among Richmond’s best, with Tom Stewart and Mitch Duncan the standouts for the Cats.

The grand final was the last game for Gary Ablett junior, who injured his shoulder during the first term, and had little influence on the contest.
