LATROBE Valley aircraft manufacturer GippsAero has confirmed it will cut a quarter of its staff by June 5 due to the impacts of COVID-19 on the aviation sector.

GippsAero - a subsidiary of Mahindra Aerospace - employs 88 people at its base, located at Latrobe Regional Airport.

The company issued a statement on Friday morning that COVID-19 was significantly impacting the aviation sector.

“With reduced demand and increased uncertainty in the short to mid-term, GippsAero plans to scale down its workforce by 25 per cent,� the statement said. “The duration of the crisis and the degree to which demand recovers versus pre-crisis levels is still yet unclear. “General aviation operators have been hit hard by the crisis, and it has brought many operations to a halt.�

The Express understands that the company is up for sale and has already offered rounds of voluntary redundancies.

Member for Morwell Russell Northe said the news was “incredibly disappointing� for employees and their families.

Mr Northe said this was not the first time the company had been subject to market fluctuations which meant it has had to adjust its staffing arrangements in the past. “Obviously, the aviation market has been smashed by COVID-19, to know it has impacted our local aviation manufacturer is really sad for all associated with the company,� Mr Northe said.

“I hope this a small bump for the company and hopefully when the crisis ends the aviation market will grow and allow the company to get back to normal staffing levels.�

Gippsland Aeronautics was founded in 1977 before Indian automotive giant Mahindra Aerospace Company bought a majority stake in late 2009.

GippsAero manufactures the utility aircraft models, the Airvan 10 and Airvan 8.

THE Latrobe Valley is bracing for a wetter than average next few months, according to the Victorian Bureau of Meteorology 2020 winter outlook.

BOM manager of long-range forecasting Dr Andrew Watkins said there were only a few areas across the country that weren’t looking at a wetter than average winter.

“For much of Victoria we’re looking at a wetter than average winter, with the exception being the far east in East Gippsland,” Dr Watkins said.

The outlook is being largely driven by warmer than average ocean temperatures off north-west Western Australia, as well as warm ocean temperatures in the western Pacific, according to Dr Watkins.

“Ocean temperatures in the eastern Indian Ocean are currently warmer than normal, and our models are predicting they will warm further throughout the winter months,” he said.

“When warm sea surface temperatures occur closer to Australia, weather patterns shift towards us

too, favouring more cloud and rainfall across the country.

“We last saw this happen in 2016, when a strong negative Indian Ocean Dipole formed to the west of Australia.

“We aren’t guaranteed the same results as 2016, but the warmer ocean temperatures surrounding the continent will push us in the direction of better than average rainfall.

“At the moment we’re seeing some interesting patterns out in the eastern Indian Ocean between Australia and Indonesia and temperatures in

the ocean there are generally warmer than average, and that’s likely to feed in some more moisture.”

On the whole,Victoria experienced a cold and wet start to the year with rainfall totals making this year the wettest autumn since 1989.

The Latrobe Valley received 412.2mm of rain for the year to May 27, compared with 157.8mm for the same time last year.

Day time temperatures will also be cooler than average for most of the region this winter, but overnight tops will be slightly above average.

Pandemic’s impact on job numbers

THE latest workforce data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows the Latrobe area suffered the state’s largest job losses in April.

The total number of employed people in the area fell 5670 during the month, representing a 4.4 per cent drop from March.

Since February the total labour force in Latrobe area has dropped by approximately 9500 jobs.

Among the hardest hit were women and young people (25 to 34-year-olds),

together making up 54 per cent of total lost jobs.

Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath said this was a devastating blow, with many Gippslanders already experiencing unprecedented economic stress from drought and bushfire.

She said data also showed the Latrobe area had the lowest participation rate - people working and looking for work - in the state, at 53.8 per cent.

“Latrobe has been hit with a triple

whammy in recent years - in terms of closure and restrictions of many employment streams,” Ms Bath told The Express.

“In terms of coal industry, we have had the government slowing the native timber industry, the farmers have had a drought and if we look to the east we have the fires earlier this year and overlay that with the coronavirus pandemic and the closure of so many small businesses.

“It is a significant stress on our families and our communities.

“The latest ABS workforce data shows the state is experiencing unprecedented economic pain, of which Gippsland is tragically bearing the brunt.

“Latrobe Valley and Gippsland cannot afford to lose any more jobs.”

The data also shows a total of 132,200 Victorian workers lost jobs between March and April due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In regional Victoria women made up 78 per cent of total employment losses.

A WINDFALL of more than $1 million is waiting to be claimed by Latrobe Valley residents in lost wages, rental bonds and share dividends.

The latest data shows the State Revenue Office has more than a million unclaimed entitlements across Victoria, ranging from as little as $20 all the way up to $994,994 - the biggest single entitlement - which is owed to a Mulgrave woman.

In Latrobe, a total of $1.07 million is ready to be collected, including $13,100 for a Trafalgar woman - the biggest local entitlement - followed by $11,000 for a Traralgon resident and $8,000 for a Morwell woman.

Another three locals each have 23 separate entitlements in their names, for a combined total of $12,000.

Latrobe currently has 10,194 individual entitlements registered for areas including Morwell ($245,313), Moe ($120,907), Glengarry ($11,258) and Newborough ($53,812).

The unclaimed money is made up of share dividends, salaries and wages, rents and bonds, debentures and interest, and proceeds from sales that for whatever reason is not collected.

After 12 months, the money is held by the SRO. Treasurer Tim Pallas said the money was “just waiting to be collected by their rightful owners”.

“We encourage all Victorians, businesses and community groups to do a search - you may be pleasantly surprised,” Mr Pallas said.

“You will know within seconds if you’re sitting on an unexpected windfall.”

Last financial year, the SRO reunited $16.6 million with its rightful owners through more than 18,000 entitlements - that’s 50 claims processed a day.

In regional Victoria, Geelong has the most unclaimed money of $2.74 million (25,137 entitlements), followed by Ballarat with $1.28 million (11,296 entitlements) and then Bendigo with $1.1 million to be claimed (11,069 entitlements).

Video star still strong

A MOE DVD store owner is proving that online streaming has not killed the video star as a new uptake of people are walking into the old school video shop to rent their favourite flicks.

Future Flicks owner Ricky Dyt estimates that more than 300 new members have signed up in the past couple of months, with the increase mainly due to COVID-19 lockdowns. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We always have a steady stream of customers here, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always a busy store. People can come in, browse around and pick out a movie,â&#x20AC;? Mr Dyt said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have staff who can give service, advice and ask us about movie recommendations.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Dyt is operating the last bricks-and-mortar video hire store in the Latrobe Valley, after he opened Future Flicks in Moe in 1988, renting out cassettes for VCR and BETA. He said he has customers come from across the region, including Sale, Welshpool, Warragul and Drouin, as more video shops have shut over the years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Initially in the early days, there were four or five video shops in each town, but this shrank to one per town when streaming came in, now there is only one in the whole area,â&#x20AC;?

Mr Dyt said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always tried to co-exist with streaming to offer something different. We make sure we keep reinventing ourselves

over the years. We lose some customers and we gain some.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Dyt said his store is more like a video library with 35,000 titles across a range of genres, including TV series, foreign and arthouse movies as well as family favourites and popcorn flicks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People come in and try us out once and say they will keep coming back. Back in the early days, it was mainly families and younger people, now itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wider spread,â&#x20AC;? Mr Dyt said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We certainly see a lot of teenagers, I think the young ones like to see an old school video store. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I always joke I will end up in Old Gippstown where those who have never heard of a video store can come and see me.â&#x20AC;?

ONE person was arrested and removed from a tree sit on Thursday afternoon after authorities broke up a forest blockade near Mount Baw Baw which halted logging for two days.

The woman was suspended 30 metres above the ground in the tree sit with cables attached to four logging machines in a coupe near Tanjil Bren Road.

A c t i v i s t g r o u p Fo r e s t Conservation Victoria spokesperson Chris Schuringa said citizen scientists had found threatened species in the area earmarked for logging.

“This particular area is significant for the threatened greater glider and contains some big, old habitat trees, these old stands of trees are disappearing from this area as it’s been heavily logged,” Ms Schuringa said.

She said the state government’s plan to get out of native forestry by 2030 was “not sustainable” and called for a transition to be brought forward instead of allowing “another decade of logging”.

Mark Maiden said the Baw Baw blockade had affected eight forestry workers and described the protest action as “madness”.

“I don’t know what they are protesting about, we only do a small proportion of that area anyway.There are big rainforest buffers, we are not harvesting the whole coupe,” Mr Maiden said.

“We do retention logging and take little pockets here and there, it’s not a clear fell.”

Protest groups also set up camps at logging coupes near Kinglake and one at Big Pat’s Creek near Warburton that has been ongoing for several weeks.

This came as the Federal Court decided last week that logging in 66 threatened species habitats contravened federal laws, in a case filed by Friends of Leadbeaters Possum.

Ms Schuringa said it was an “incredible result” and set a legal precedent that could “definitely change a few things”, but it was too early to tell what it meant for the Baw Baw coupe.

The court found that stateowned logging agency VicForests had not and was unlikely to

comply with both state and federal laws designed to protect threatened species.

The industry has operated under a special exemption from federal environment law for more than 20 years under Regional Forest Agreements, but the court decision could have implications around the country.

The court found that logging in certain areas of the central highlands failed to comply with a timber production code of practice, which is a requirement under the Regional Forest Agreement.

VicForests stated it acknowledged the Federal Court decision and would carefully consider the implications on its harvesting program.

It noted extensive areas for biodiversity protection were set aside at the end of 2019 when the government developed its Victorian Forestry plan.

“In addition, a new Greater Glider Action Statement is in place under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988 and is being fully implemented by VicForests,” it said.

Farmers can benefit from AGL support

AGL announced on Friday it had broadened its $2 million support program for farmers affected by drought to include small businesses in rural areas.

Chief Customer Officer Christine Corbett said the re-launch of the Farmers Assist program as Farmer and Business Assist reflected the fact that small businesses had also been affected by drought and the bushfires that ravaged large areas of Australia earlier this year.

“We know rural communities have been doing it tough,” Ms Corbett said.

“AGL has extended its program to support rural small businesses in drought-affected regions in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.

“Farmers and small businesses will be able to get immediate help in the form of debt relief, and discounted solar PV purchases to provide ongoing long-term energy savings.”

Eligible AGL customers can get up to $1500 (including GST) of existing debt wiped from their electricity and gas bills. Farmers and small businesses can also buy a solar system with an upfront discount of between $2500 and $25,000 (excluding GST), irrespective of whether they are AGL customers.

The assistance is available until June 30, 2020 unless it is extended or fully subscribed.

AGL has urged anyone who needs assistance to get in touch.

This program is in addition to AGL’s support for customers affected by the coronavirus along with those still impacted by bushfires.

The COVID-19 Customer Support Program provides fasttracked access to a program that defers payments and suspends disconnections until July 31 for customers who may be under financial stress as a result of the pandemic.

AGL paused bills and debt collection notices for customers in fire-affected areas during the bushfires and continues to provide assistance, apply credits and waive charges in applicable circumstances.

This was in addition to support for volunteer firefighters and SES volunteers who can receive a $150 credit (including GST) per customer on their residential and small business electricity or gas bills before July 7, 2020.

“For customers who do not fit the criteria for these specific programs, our Staying Connected Program remains available and ready to support those in need, regardless of the circumstance,” Ms Corbett said.

SOME Latrobe City facilities will open from tomorrow following the state government’s easing of lockdown restrictions.

Mayor Dan Clancey said the community would still have to follow social distancing and hygiene requirements.

“We are reopening the customer service centre at Council HQ in Morwell, the libraries in Moe, Morwell and Traralgon, the Latrobe Regional Gallery, the Visitor Information Centre and the swimming pools at Latrobe Leisure Centres in Churchill, Moe Newborough and Morwell,” Cr Clancey said.

Put local businesses first LOCAL MP Darren Chester is encouraging Gippslanders to keep putting locals first and show their support for local businesses as many begin reopening their doors after the coronavirus shutdown.

From today Gippsland restaurants and cafes will be able to serve a limited number of customers in their dining areas and overnight stays away from home will be allowed.

Personal service businesses, like beauty salons, will also resume trading.

Mr Chester said this was welcome news for business owners and customers across Gippsland.

“Gippsland’s hospitality and tourism sector has had an extremely difficult time since the summer bushfires,” Mr Chester said.

“Other states have moved faster to allow businesses to recommence trading but I hope this staged relaxation of the coronavirus restrictions will support local jobs.

“Our local traders have shown resilience and adaptability over the past few months and found innovative

“The way to help our region get back on its feet is to spend some money and support local businesses, particularly those unable to trade since March.

She said the data they were gathering was not to serve any particular group, but she hoped it would be of interest to both industry and animal rights organisations, as well as the general public.

SOUTH Gippsland Shire Council endorsed phase one of the $2M COVID-19 Community Support Package at its meeting on May 27.

The $2M COVID-19 Community Support Package was created in response to the pandemic and aims to help support local communities and business to recover from challenges the crisis has presented.

The total cost of phase one is estimated at $740,614 and delivers a free influenza vaccination program, community and business grants, waiving of fees and charges and development and distribution of a community information brochure relating to support services.

Commencement of phase one is subject to formal approval of the annual budget in June 2020. A future progress report is expected at the August Council Meeting.

South Gippsland Shire’s chair administrator Julie Eisenbise is pleased to see the first stages of the support package take shape.

“Council is proud that due to our strong financial position we are able to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and put measures in place that will support out local community,” Ms Eisenbise said.

“This crisis has had a significant impact on everyone across South Gippsland and we want to ensure that the right measures are in place to get us back on our feet.

“To do this we are committed to investing $2 million in our local community and in our local economy to help minimise some of the long term effects COVID-19 will have.”

ENERGYAUSTRALIA is appealing to households and businesses to get in touch the moment its becomes more difficult to pay a power bill.

EnergyAustralia can support vulnerable households through its EnergyAssist hardship program, and can also provide tailored assistance to businesses.

The energy retailer had broadened access to payment plans and payment extension schemes for people financially affected by COVID-19, as well as launching its Rapid Business Assist program for small businesses.

EnergyAustralia chief customer officer Mark Collette said while call waiting times had sometimes been longer than usual, it was still better to get in touch if paying an energy bill was difficult.

“We’ve already seen a significant increase in people contacting us about their power bills,” Mr Collette said.

“Please, don’t let the issue build up.

“The earlier people get in touch the better we

can help with payment plans and bill extensions.”

Mr Collette said he company could put people in touch with trained financial advisors to talk or connect people with government support programs that they may not have known about.

“Most importantly, debt collection or disconnection activity is suspended while a customer is participating in EnergyAssist. It’s our stayconnected guarantee,” Mr Collette said.

Mr Collette said specialist advisors could discuss lowering energy consumption, government energy relief subsidies and tailored payment schedules.

“If a business is in hibernation, we can help with free disconnections and reconnections to save them money,” he said.

“Our phone lines have been incredibly busy and we’re so grateful for people’s patience. But the investments we’re making are helping us get on top of the call backlog and get support to people in need.”

Rotary provides helping hand with Berry Street Community Programs team leader Courtney Pulis to pass on the eagerly awaited funds.

“Engage Latrobe” is a program designed to assist young people (aged 15 -25) in Latrobe Valley through group activities, to further develop their skills and connection to the community.

Referrals to the program include those who have left school early, juvenile offenders or those facing court, young people experiencing mental issues, socially isolated youth and those who have experienced drug or alcohol issues.

Mr Swainsbury said Morwell Rotary was proud to contribute to the program.

“Youth Services support is an important part of Rotary’s commitment to the community and our club is pleased to be able to help young people in the Latrobe Valley who need support and a feeling of belonging,” he said.

“Lots of spectators await the arrival of the motorbikes and are encouraged to bring a toy for hand over to the Salvos and Vinnies and stay for lunch. Santa and Elsa from Frozen will be welcoming the kids and there will be plenty to see.”

Mr Vella said the event has grown thanks to strong support from the community.

“We are fortunate in the Latrobe Valley to have some very generous businesses, many of whom have been supporting us for the entire time,” he said.

“All of our Power Companies provide an overwhelming amount of toys along with the APM, the Morwell Bowling Club, Bunnings, several Lions and RSL Clubs and many, many other businesses.

“Lots of toys also come from locals who are keen to help. Of course all of those riders on the day also bring along many toys. All in all, on toy run day, the two trucks from the Salvos and St Vinnies parked at Old Gippstown are full to capacity and make a heart warming sight.”

EARLIER this year, the Rotary Club of Morwell announced that it would be supporting the Berry Street youth program “Engage Latrobe” with a $2000 grant.

Past District Governor Charlie Speirs heard of the project and suggested if the club applied for a District Foundation Grant, they could also contribute $1000, making a combined contribution of $3000.

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown and the suspension of Rotary gatherings and the temporary closure of Berry Street office to the public, presentation of the cheque was unfortunately delayed.

Morwell Rotarians were quick to rectify that last month when a lifting of some of the restrictions allowed the two parties to interact.

THE 2020 Gippsland Motorcyclists Toy Run has been launched.

Organisers have said this year will long be remembered for all the grief and hardship that it has brought and they are advised by the Salvos and St Vinnies that their services are in even greater demand.

“We are making a bigger effort to meet the need,” Toy Run co-ordinator Alf Vella said.

“Without help many families will struggle to provide the Christmas cheer that we all look forward to.”

Mr Vella said organisers are already receiving toys which are being put into storage for a handover closer to Christmas.

He is optimistic the 2020 Toy Run, now in its 21st year, will take place on Saturday, December 5.

“It will depart from Bobber Dave’s Bike Shop at Nefertiti Court,Traralgon, at 11am and make its way to Glengarry, Tyers, Yallourn North and will continue to Willow Grove then on to Old Gippstown, arriving at approximately 12.20pm,” he said.

“Last year we had 250 bikes participate and the parade was full of colour, incredible sounds and very interesting people.

“Old Gippstown is open free of charge to the public on this day and the conclusion of the ride is a grand parade into this venue.

New cleaning initiative has vital support LOCALLY employed workers are undertaking a huge cleaning blitz around Latrobe City as part of the state’s Working for Victoria initiative.

Mayor Dan Clancey said the cleaning crews had already started and would work across all CBDs. “We welcome the initiative, not only because it affords us a measure of relief knowing our city centres will be cleaned regularly, but also because the workers are local. The blitz will see teams of cleaners disinfect and wipe down external surfaces such as street benches, handrails and door handles, traffic light buttons, poles, bicycle stands and bins,” Cr Clancey said.

“They apply a cleansing disinfectant, at a safe concentrate level, via spray bottle, and use a cloth to wipe over the surface. They work in teams in specific areas, to eliminate the possibility of any cross-contamination.

“Additionally, local businesses will be included in the cleaning schedule, which will see their door handles and handrail surfaces cleaned. The initiative is aimed at helping build confidence, as restrictions are slowly eased and more people start to go out and about.”

MOTORISTS are being warned to look out for a 640-tonne superload on the move from Port Melbourne to Loy Yang B. The movements will take place tonight, tomorrow night and Wednesday night and are being facilitated by the Department of Transport.

The department warned drivers to expect disruptions and lengthy delays if they encountered the superload, which will travel at between 15 to 20 kilometres an hour.

Some roads will be closed ahead of the vehicle and in most cases motorists will be unable to overtake the transport due to its size.

THE students in the Prep/Grade 1 and Grade 1/2 Hubs at Morwell Central Primary School had a smooth transition back to class after working from home for the first six weeks of Term 2.

The students were very excited to see their teachers and friends again.

A special event was held during their first week backthe National Simultaneous Storytime.

This event is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).

Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.

Now in its 20th year, it is a fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy.

The students at Morwell Central enjoyed watching Performing Arts teacher, Mr Mendez’s recording of this year’s book Whitney and Britney Chicken Divas by Lucinda Gifford.

The story is about two gorgeous chooks who seem to sleep all day, their friend, Dora the Fox, follows them at night and finds them performing in a local jazz club.

After the story, the Prep/Grade 1s made diva microphones while the Grade 1/2s created funky chicken masks.

It was a really enjoyable day for all.

Looking back through the archives at memorable sporƟng moments in the Latrobe Valley.

Recalling a Sweet odyssey to the Cup DESPITE the rise in international interest during recent decades, the Melbourne Cup is still the race that stops the nation.

First run in 1861, the Melbourne Cup has been won by some of the greats of the turf.

Archer, Carbine, Phar Lap, Peter Pan, Rising Fast, Rain Lover and of course the great Makybe Diva are etched in history for their deeds at Flemington on the first Tuesday in November.

But arguably the true beauty of the race is that it provides anyone the chance to dream of victory.

Take Rogan Josh, the 1999 Cup winner, who was owned by Darwin schoolteacher Wendy Green and trained by Bart Cummings.

You know, the man that trained 12 Melbourne Cup winners.

Mrs Green’s road trip back to the Top End saw her call into a number of towns and the Cup trophy was called on to christen a baby under a tree in Tennant Creek.

Gippsland can lay claim to producing a Melbourne Cup winner in Patrobas.

Patrobas started his career being beaten in a two-horse race at Rosedale, but emerged into a champion after being sent to Melbourne trainer Charlie Wheeler by owner Edith Widdis.

The brown colt won the Caulfield Guineas and the Victorian Derby before tackling the great race.

Ridden by jockey Bobby Lewis, Patrobas, carrying saddlecloth 19, won the Melbourne Cup in a time of 3:28.25.

Mrs Widdis became the first female to own a Melbourne Cup winner, but as women were not permitted into the mounting yard or members area of the Victoria Racing Club, she received the prize away from the track.

Fast forward 79 years and the Latrobe Valley was dreaming of a Melbourne Cup success.

Sweet Glory announced her arrival as a Cup contender in 1994.

The daughter of New Zealandbred stallion All Glory started the year winning a 1600m Class 2 Handicap at Sale with jockey Shane Tronerud in the saddle.

Sweet Glory landed a city success at Sandown on February 1 and followed that up by saluting at Flemington in an Open Mares Handicap (2000m) on February 19.

Both times she was ridden by Greg Childs, who would later go on to ride the champion New Zealand mare Sunline.

Sweet Glory finished a good third in the Duke of Norfolk Stakes (3200m) at Listed level on March 26 as a 15-1 shot.

After three unplaced runs, Sweet Glory turned up as a lightweight hope in the 1994 Adelaide Cup. Starting 60-1 in the 20-strong field, Sweet Glory ran out of her skin under jockey Peter Shepherd to finish second, beaten half a length

by Our Pompeii.

The performance qualified her for that year’s Cup. Sweet Glory’s preparation for the great race saw her kick-off in the Sale Quality before building up to run second at Moonee Valley in Open company and then an eye-catching fourth in the Geelong Cup.

ca career by accident about 20 years ag ago and a reformed rogue mare that, n not so long ago, looked like ending th the misery of he and connections w with a series of ill-tempered in incidents and accidents.

The trainer is Barry Bennett, who si since stumbling on the career, has ca carved a niche in the industry with a string of top horses the calibre of M My Saturn Star, Sonic Express and, m more recently, sampled success with A Australian Steeple winner Hussar’s B Best.

The horse is Sweet Glory, which h has since cured most of its illm manner and the indigestion suffered by connections to give Bennett and th the Yinnar townsfolk their first ru runner in Australia’s most famous h horse race.

She followed a familiar path to the B Bennett stable through veteran New Z Zealand racing writer Alf Kneebone.

He has picked three horses from ov over the Tasman that have all w won for his son Tony, editor of the W Winning Post racing newspaper, Rob V Vella and Bennett’s wife Judy.

Alf was sent to a ready to run sale at Cambridge in search of something th that might stay a bit and set his si sights on a two-year-old filly.

She was passed in at the sale ring at $NZ3800 because the vendors w wanted at least $4000 (A$2800) to pa pay for a service fee to rising stallion (O (Our) Westminster.

Alf came up with the extra $200 an and she was shipped over to the B Bennett stable.

“I liked her on breeding and co conformation,” he recalls.

“She is still a nice looker.”

But the temperament never really m matched those other attributes and it wasn’t long before she earned the n nickname ‘Aggro Aggie’ around the st stable.

“She was a cranky bitch, right fr from the start,” Bennett said.

“We’ve come close to unloading her a couple of times.

“There was one day I came back fr from the track and I’d had enough, I re reckon if someone had offered me a co couple of thousand for her, I would h have taken it.”

But the team persevered and when it was decided that Sweet Glory would tackle the Adelaide Cup, Bennett redesigned his float so that her kicks would not land and arranged to travel at night so she didn’t think she was going to the races.

Garry Howe shared the inside story of the run that qualified her for the Melbourne Cup. Sweet Glory arrived in one piece but managed to add a bit of drama to the Cup preliminaries by rearing up and firing lightweight jockey Pe Peter Shepherd to the turf.

Stable foreman Mal Swinley qu quickly picked up the stunned and an angry hoop, threw him the saddle an and consoled him.

“This could be your lucky day,” he sa said.

“She’s feeling good.”

She proved just how good by fi finishing a half-length second to O Our Pompeii in the Cup. The third horse that day was

ruling Melbourne Cup favourite Top Rating, which provides and encouraging formline for Sweet Glory followers.

Sweet Glory started 66-1 in the Melbourne Cup, then worth a cool $2 million, but sadly for the Valley there would be no fairytale result.

English import Jeune delivered trainer David Hayes his first (and to date only) Cup victory, edging out Paris Lane by a length and three quarters.

Sweet Glory finished 17th, 20 lengths from the winner.

Garry Howe was there to cover the aftermath for The Express on November 3, 1994.

Trainer Barry Bennett did not want to be seen as searching for excuses for the 17th placing of Sweet Glory in Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup. However, he did join the chorus of disapproval of a Victoria Racing Club (VRC) decision to water the Flemington track on the morning of the cup to suit the English visitors.

A fast track would clearly have suited Sweet Glory, but the surface was on the worst side of good, according to Bennett, after it had received 2mm of water at 8am and gentle showers had fallen throughout the day.

The track was officially downgraded from fast to good before the third race, but Bennett claims it was never fast.

“Frankie (Stockdale) rode in the first and he said there was a lot of give in the ground then,” he said.

Jockey Peter Shepherd, who had flown over from South Australia to take the ride, said Sweet Glory did not appreciate the track condition when she was asked for an effort in the straight.

“She was travelling nicely on the bit, but she just didn’t go when I let her have her head,” he said.

Bennett claimed the VRC was playing into the hands of the English contingent, led by Vintage Crop’s trainer Dermot Weld.

He believes the VRC indicated that there would be “give in the ground”.

“They won’t change the rules for the locals who have racing going here for the past 50 years, but they will for those who come here for one race a year,” he said.

Bennett said Sweet Glory had pulled up well after the race despite copping a bad check at the 400m mark.

Shepherd told him her condition did not give out, but she just didn’t handle the going.

Sweet Glory would only race four more times after the Melbourne Cup. She ran third to Exaltayo in an Open Handicap (2574m) at Flemington at her next start in December.

Her last grand performance came in her penultimate race, the Group 2 Perth Cup (3200m) on January 2, 1995.

With Greg Childs in the saddle, Sweet Glory belied her 20-1 price to run third, beaten a length.

Sweet Glory retired with a record of five wins and 13 minor placings from 36 starts.

Netball prepares for return to play NETBALL

NETBALL Victoria said it is continuing to advocate on behalf of the sport’s fraternity for a roadmap to resume competitive play.

The sport’s officials are pushing for a recommencement of competition netball in mid-July.

With the easing of restrictions across the state from today, groups of 20, plus a coach will be able to participate in training at outdoor venues.

All activity and training must be non-contact and no competitions or match play can take place.

Netball Victoria said it will continue to support associations, leagues and clubs through this unprecedented time to ensure they adhere to the Return to Community Netball guidelines.

The governing body said to effectively assess the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on Netball Victoria membership, they have deferred an announcement until October 31, 2020.

This will enable Netball Victoria to make an informed decision based on the state of play, and to further assess a range of options to manage current and future memberships.

Netball Victoria said it continues to accept applications for refunds based on hardship or medical reasons, which are assessed on a weekly basis.

“We are aware our netball community are doing all you can to make decisions in this uncertain environment,” a Netball Victoria spokesperson said in a statement.

Hopeful: Netball Victoria said it is continuing to advocate on behalf of the sport’s fraternity for a roadmap to resume competitive play by mid-July.

MORWELL export Peter Siddle has signed a twoseason deal to play with Tasmania.

Siddle, 35, who retired from Test cricket in December 2019, will bolster the state’s pace attack.

“My greatest goal is to come to Tasmania and play good cricket, while hopefully winning a few games which will be my biggest aim,” he said.

“There’s a few players down here that I’ve played a lot of cricket with, and there’s a bunch of younger players that I’m looking forward to playing alongside.”

Siddle said the move to the Tigers would prepare him for the next step of his playing career.

“It’s a great opportunity for me while I’m still playing to work alongside Griff (Tasmania coach Adam Griffith),” he said.

“I want to develop my coaching skills further and really help some of the younger boys who have already shown a great amount of talent.”

Siddle said he was excited about the chance to play alongside his former Australian and Victorian

teammate Matthew Wade.

“To get the opportunity to play alongside Wadey again is very exciting, we’ve had a lot of success playing alongside together and now we can have that same success down in Tassie.”

“I see this as an exciting venture for me, and it’s something that I am really looking forward to.”

The Latrobe Cricket Club product played 67 Tests during an 11-year career for Australia, taking 221 wickets at 30.66.

Siddle, who recently confirmed he would return to Essex for the 2021 English Country Championship season, brings great experience to the Tasmanian line-up.

He has played 179 first-class matches and taken 671 wickets at 26.86.

Siddle was third on the Sheffield Shield leading wickets tally in 2019/20, claiming 29 wickets at 20.41, ranking him only behind Cameron Gannon (Queensland) and Chadd Sayers (South Australia).

Siddle said there were mixed emotions to leave Victoria after an association stretching back to 2005/06.

“It’s very sad to be finishing up with Victoria,” he said.

“You probably think when

you start your career you’re going to finish your career in that state and be a one-state player.”

Cricket Victoria’s general manager of cricket Shaun Graf thanked Siddle for his service, saying he had been a role model for teammates and a much-loved member of the state squad.

“Peter has always been the ultimate professional in the way he prepares for playing at the highest level.

That professionalism and dedication has delivered an immense contribution to Victorian cricket over a 15 year period,” Graf said.

“When we first saw him in Gippsland coming through the ranks, we knew we had some talent on our hands.

“His heart and soul approach has inspired teammates and he’s mentored many young players throughout Victoria.

“He’s never shied away from hard work and is someone his teammates just love playing alongside.

“Peter has been a key figure in a very successful era for Victorian cricket and while we’re sad to see him leave for Tasmania, he leaves with our very best wishes.

We know his heart will always be navy blue.”

MOE South trainer Bronwyn Pulis prepared winners on consecutive days at Warragul during a busy week for the club.

Brave Traveller ($4.10) stopped the clock in 22.92 seconds for the fifth win of his 35-start career.

Pulis continued her winning run in Friday’s meeting thanks to Wild Poppy.

The daughter of Fernando Bale broke through for her first win at start 12 in the Australian Quality Pet Foods Maiden (400m).

Wild Poppy ($7.00) always sat handy from box two and saluted by a length in 23.05 seconds.

Churchill trainer Aaron Farley was all smiles after Lucky Luna made light work of the TAB Long May We Play Grade 5 (400m).

Lucky Luna led all the way from box seven, saluting by 6.6 lengths in a time of 23.06 seconds.

The daughter of KC and All has now won seven of her 27 starts.

Heyfield trainer Wendy Fasoli’s charge Stormcast won a Grade 5 (400m) in good style on Friday.

The son of Collision jumped from box seven and led all the way for a fourth career win

from 25 starts in a handy 22.78 seconds.

Going back to Thursday, Poppo’s Grinning landed his second career win in a Grade 7 (400m).

The success was his first since prevailing on debut at Sale in December 2019 and delighted his Willow Grove trainer Trevor Whitford.

Emma Banjo justified her $1.80 favouritism by racing away with a Grade 6 (400m) for Moe South trainer Ray Cunneen.

Newborough trainer Gerry Orr continued his good recent run in Tuesday’s meeting.

Thirty Red is an exciting chaser, but floored punters as a $22.70 pop after leading all the way from box two in the Find Us On Facebook Mixed 6/7 (460m).

Secrets Untold was the subject of an avalanche of cash, starting the $1.40 favourite, but offered little as Thirty Red strolled home in 26.21 seconds.
