Chunxing open to conditions

NO APPOINTMENT NEEDED

CHUNXING has stated it plans to voluntarily offer a range of additional conditions attached to its used lead battery recycling plant in Hazelwood North.

It comes as the development was officially gazetted by the Planning Minister Richard Wynne on Thursday, who signed off on the development on December 31, 2020.

The Minister’s conditions include an amenity clause, landscaping, environmental, stormwater and wastewater management and site remediation plans once the plant stops operating.

Chunxing chief executive officer Lakshman Jayaweera said he was going through the details of the conditions attached to the official ministerial approval.

“I will certainly be looking at offering a number of additional conditions on a voluntary basis which I am sure will be of great comfort to the community as a whole,” Dr Jayaweera said.

“I have always wanted to work with the Latrobe Valley community who genuinely believe in this project to keep them up to date and clarify any concerns.”

The Minister had intervened to approve the plant ahead of an impending VCAT appeal and override Latrobe City Council’s decision to knock back the controversial development in September.

The list of ministerial conditions are in line with those recommended by council’s own planning officers and those attached to the application ahead of the September council meeting.

Council officers are now in the midst of reviewing

all the documents attached to the ministerial approval.

Latrobe City Mayor Sharon Gibson said she remained “disappointed about the ministerial intervention into this matter”.

She said the state government planning scheme needed to reflect any health and environmental impacts of proposed developments and questioned the relevance of the Health Innovation Zone.

Cr Gibson also pointed to last week’s major announcement that energy giant Alinta would establish a call centre in Morwell providing 230 new jobs.

“This shows that there are opportunities for investment in the Valley that won’t put people’s health at risk,” Cr Gibson said.

Hazelwood North Action Group spokesman Andy Tegart said the group has re-affirmed its “strong objection” to the Minister’s “unnecessary intervention”.

“It appears the Minister has not commented on, or addressed, the ongoing concerns of the community regarding public health and ULAB workplace exposures to lead,” Mr Tegart said.

In an official statement, Latrobe City said it would ensure that “community sentiment relating to the health and environmental impacts of the approved facility have been communicated to government”.

“Council understands the community’s frustration and disappointment in the decision being made by government without any consultation with council or the community,” the statement said.

AGL battery suppliers announced AGL has announced energy storage technology companies Wärtsilä and Fluence will supply a 200 megawatt battery at Loy Yang A. The two companies have been secured under non-exclusive framework agreements to supply AGL with 1000MW of grid-scale battery storage at Loy Yang, Liddell and Broken Hill in NSW and at Torrens Island in South Australia.

AGL chief operating officer Markus Brokhof said Wärtsilä and Fluence were chosen through a competitive tender process and were global leaders in energy storage.

“We are already well advanced with our planning process and these framework agreements will reduce tender timeframes for individual projects, enabling faster project schedules and commercial operation,” Mr Brokhof said.

“We’re excited to see our grid-scale battery plans begin to come to life, we know energy storage technology is critical in creating cleaner and smarter distributed energy infrastructure.”

Mr Brokhof said grid-scale batteries would provide the energy market with “critical” firming capacity and would play a leading role in the energy industry’s transition.

Mr Brokhof said AGL was now leading the

development of storage technology such as grid-scale and residential batteries, as part of its targets to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

“Grid-scale batteries allow AGL to leverage excess solar and wind generation to provide capacity when renewable sources are not generating,” he said.

Wärtsilä Energy sales director Suraj Narayan said he was “delighted” that AGL selected the company as one of the project suppliers.

“AGL is a valued customer for Wärtsilä and we look forward to providing our smart technology solutions to support AGL’s plans for critical firming capacity that will play a leading role in the energy transition from coal to renewables,” Mr Narayan said.

Fluence global markets vice president of Jan Teichmann said AGL’s battery-based energy storage would deliver the large-scale flexibility critical to support the National Electricity Market.

“Australia’s grid is evolving quickly, and batteries can fill critical gaps left by coal and gas retirements, both the super-fast services needed to strengthen the grid and as a source of peak power,” Mr Teichmann said.

Pent-up buyer demand driving price spike

JOHN Kerr director Robert Sim said there was “pent up buyer demand and a shortage of properties to buy” across the Latrobe Valley, but “particularly in the Moe area”.

“The good thing about all this is that it’s driven by fundamentals - and that is the low stock levels and buyer demand, but the point is that prices around metro areas coming out as far as Warragul have increased dramatically, and that has a ripple effect and naturally flows onto us,” Mr Sim said.

“We see Trafalgar and Yarragon no more than 20 minutes down the road from Moe, and the pricing structure there is much higher, so therefore we become a preferred option.”

Mr Sim said that contrary to popular belief, the spike in demand was not a phenomenon driven entirely by the pandemic.

“This is the greatest fallacy, this notion that the whole COVID thing has driven people to a lifestyle change is nonsense,” he said.

“The Latrobe Valley is really well serviced with retail, medical, commercial and community options, you’ve got to a two-lane freeway to take you back to Melbourne and V/Line trains that run on the hour.

“I would suggest 50 per cent of our buyers are coming from a westerly direction.

“There is also the fact there are strong local buyers, ready for upgrades or to build, and land value has increased at least 10 to 20 per cent over the last 18 months as well.”

But a relatively new trend has seen properties listed and sold in record time.

“That shortened time frame around listing and selling has probably grown as more of a phenomenon in recent times,” Mr Sim said.

“I have definitely seen this evolving, partly because of low stock levels of property throughout the Valley

About 50 people turned out to watch the Alamein Street property go under the hammer, on about 800 square metres, and a stunning 35 bids were made.

BJ Bennett and Co Real Estate managing director Graeme Jarvie said the mortgagee sale yielded a “very surprising” result.

“The prices have been exceptionally good and places are getting fairly hard to value and there’s really not a great deal to sell at the moment,” Mr Bennett said.

“It’s been a mix of (buying for) investment properties, people looking for a tree change, but it’s just gone ahead in leaps and bounds.

“When Hazelwood closed down people were thinking things were going the other way, but the market is just exceptional at the moment.”

“Investment-wise we’ve got really good rental demand and the rental yield is far better here than in Melbourne, and with super low interest rates investors have to drive their dollar further and they can do that here.”

Mr Sim said market buoyancy would carry through the year, with “more of the same” expected for 2021.

“I think probably the fortune is in the favour of the vendor at the moment, and well-presented, well-priced properties will continue to create buyer demand,” he said.

“I don’t think the situation is going to change any time soon. Confidence will remain.”

‘Never been busier’

PETER Rennie, of Rennie Property Sales, has been an agent for 42 years and said he has “never been busier”.

“I think generally right across the board we have found vacant land in the Valley has been selling very quickly and we just can’t get enough of the blocks at the minute,” he said.

The First Home Owner Grant, worth $20,000 in regional Victoria, and the HomeBuilder Grant, worth $25,000, have encouraged a “very strong” crop of first home buyers to consider regional living.

“We had a subdivision at Yinnar that has sold out, another development on Gaskin Drive in Churchill which has sold out, and another at Emerald Court in Churchill where 20 out of the 34 have sold and they’re not even on the market,” Mr Rennie said.

“Anything with a new title is being sold. A lot of people are relocating from Melbourne and even Pakenham and Cranbourne, and a lot of retirees are moving out of the area. A lot of people are moving because it’s affordable and they can work from home.

“I think what’s happened is the Valley was so far behind a lot of other areas in terms of growth, particularly Moe and Morwell, that all of the sudden we’ve had to catch up.

“The prices were low and are starting to move upwards and that’s across the board.

“And there’s still plenty of room in the market because we’re still undervalued compared to other parts of the real estate market in the city.”

“THE market is really steady and it pretty much has been like that for quite some time,” Keith Williams Real Estate managing director Grant Williams said.

“The number of sales are probably similar year in, year out, but the amount of property to select from is less.

“There’s not quite as many people moving around because of the lockdown, but generally the market for buyers has been steady for quite some time.

“If someone asked me how 2020 was, I’d say very interesting because the style of marketing we do and the way we operate as an industry has changed.

“I think we’ve adapted very quickly and we’ve been able to cater for buyers’ and sellers’ needs under the circumstances that were put in front of us.”

Mr Williams said regional Victoria “dodged a bullet” by avoiding a full Melbourne-style lockdown, and so too did the local property market.

“Melbourne agents were locked down for almost 3.5 months, so that made it particularly difficult for them, but for us we could still get around,” he said.

“Everybody’s been talking (the market) up, and prices have held really well residentially and there’s certainly plenty of demand, but you’ll probably find demand hasn’t changed a whole lot, it’s just that people have less property to look at.

“I look at it like toilet paper - if you need a roll and there’s only one roll on the shelf then you’re going to buy it, irrespective of the price or brand.

“When you’ve got not a lot of property on offer people have got to make a snap decision because the amount of stock is less.

“People will live here if there’s employment, and we still need to be finding new projects to diversify the place and have other types of industry to make it more stable.”

Record low rental vacancies

“ON the rental side of the business we’re running at less than 1 per cent vacancy,” Stockdale and Leggo managing director Jim Demetrios said.

“I’ve never seen it that low before in 35 years of real estate, I’ve never seen such a demand in rentals and sales.

“It’s been a great year and we’ve actually probably seen a good 25 per cent increase in sales over the last 12 months, which has been incredible.

“The biggest problem at the moment is a shortage of stock, but there’s plenty of buyers out there and since COVID a lot of people are trying to move to regional.”

PROPERTY prices in regional Victoria have risen at a higher annual rate than in capital cities for the first time in 15 years, and towns across the Latrobe Valley are following the trend.

New data from CoreLogic reveals house prices in capital cities increased 2 per cent for the year to September 2020, while those in regional markets jumped overall by just shy of 7 per cent.

“Regional markets haven’t outperformed metropolitan markets since 2004, so this is quite a phenomenon,” CoreLogic research director Tim Lawless said.

“I think this trend is quite entrenched now and it will persist into 2021. Perhaps as we go into mid-2021 we will start to see affordability diminish between capital and regional markets,” In Latrobe City, the median house price jumped 8.2 per cent, but the starkest change was seen in Churchill where prices spiked a massive 20.6 per cent for the 12 months up to September 30, according to localised figures from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria.

The Moe market also flourished, with prices jumping 17 per cent, while prices in neighbouring Newborough somewhat surprisingly dipped 6.5 per cent.

The hottest markets overall in Victoria proved to be those within two hours to capital cities such as Latrobe, Geelong and Ballarat.

“People can have the best of both worlds and live in a marketplace with lifestyle benefits and lower prices, as well as commute back to big cities if they need to,” Mr Lawless said.

“We are seeing demand going into those regional markets. Supply is low. Homes are selling quickly.”

Despite some towns outperforming others in terms of price rises, Mr Demetrios said “all towns are doing extremely well”.

“We do Morwell, Churchill and Traralgon and the demand is great everywhere,” he said.

“And it’s not even certain price ranges that we’re seeing the demand, it’s strong in virtually every price bracket across the board.

“The low interest rates are driving it and because of the lack of rental properties a lot of people are looking at the option of buying.

“We’re seeing a strong market and a lot of people coming to the area, and we’re not just talking people focused on budget price, we’re getting people coming here to live basically for lifestyle.

“People are wanting to get out of the highly populated metro areas. People’s attitudes to regional living are changing.”

CLINTON Taylor, of Danny Edebohls Property Sales, described the state of the local property market as “resilient”.

“Last year there was a lot of local interest and local buyers stimulating the market,” Mr Taylor said.

“Out-of-town buyers couldn’t come and inspect, and there is interest from out of town, but I don’t think it’s any different to what we were experiencing before (COVID).

Opposition leader visits Rosedale

STATE opposition leader Michael O’Brien was in Rosedale late last week, meeting with farmers reliant on irrigation water from the Latrobe River.

With uncertainty surrounding exactly where water to fill the Hazelwood mine will come from, talk of using water from the Latrobe River has local irrigators anxious.

Mr O’Brien said it was critical the state government provided reassurance to farmers.

“These farmers are very productive, but you can’t farm without water and they need to be assured that the government won’t be taking water that should be theirs or water that should be for the environment, and putting it into abandoned mines down at Hazelwood,” he said.

Mr O’Brien said it was a “critical issue”.

“We know there is an issue with rehabilitation of the Hazelwood mine sites, but the question is where is that water going to come from?” he said.

“And we’re certainly here to say it cannot come at the expense of our farmers.

“The government needs to give the community certainty.

“It’s really important for everyone in Gippsland that relies on farming and agricultural activity.

“We need to know how the government is going to resolve this issue with the old Hazelwood mine sites.

“We don’t want to see any subsidence, but you cannot afford to take water away from our farmers or even our environment to put down old mines.”

The Latrobe River Irrigators group, formed last year, believes the best course of action would be to allocate existing water currently held in the Blue Rock system toward farmers.

Latrobe River Irrigators chairman Angus Zilm said this would enable farmers to grow more crops, and grow more food and fibre “which ultimately would be better for the economy in the broader Gippsland area”.

“We’re concerned that water is not being used for productive use,” Mr Zilm said.

“If the mines were to use that water and put it into the pit, then we would not have our reliable water - and that would be detrimental to irrigators along the system.

“It would affect all the crops they grow, it would affect their viability and ultimately their ability to

employ staff and the flow-on benefits for the region.

“We are extremely reliant on the river.

“A lot of the farmers use irrigation water to create a season, so we’ll irrigate right through the summer or we’ll start a season off in the autumn or extend a season a bit longer in the spring - we just simply can’t do it without irrigation water.

“It’s vital to make sure we can guarantee yields.”

Member for Gippsland South Danny O’Brien agreed more had to be done to help farmers, adding there was scope to further develop the agricultural sector in the area.

“Certainly one of the great opportunities is the vast amounts of water that is unused in the Latrobe system that could go to expanding irrigated agriculture in the Central Gippsland area,” he said.

“It’s a really good opportunity to help us transition as the power stations close - there are good, longterm sustainable jobs and industries in irrigated agriculture and horticulture.

“I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to convince the government there’s merit in that and there is work happening on it now.

“The important thing is that the government mustn’t throw that away by having any of the Latrobe water go into pit lakes in the mines.

“I think we can work through the solutions - and I understand the difficulty and complexity of maintaining stable landforms around the mines - but we certainly don’t want to see any of that unused water going into pit lakes.

“That water should be going into expanding irrigation in the region, creating more jobs for Gippsland.”

Hazelwood operator ENGIE plans to begin filling the mine void this year, which could take decades.

In a statement, an ENGIE spokesperson said ENGIE Hazelwood’s approach to filling the mine void had been “designed to manage environmental concerns, and will not affect the access or entitlements of any other water user in the short or long term”.

“We continue to discuss future water source options like recycled and desalinated water with government and relevant regulators,” the statement said.

In December, government documents revealed there would not be enough water in the Latrobe River system to create pit lakes out of the Latrobe Valley’s mine voids under forecast climate scenarios.

NEWBOROUGH East Primary School has won an inaugural gardening award in an event held

by Latrobe City Council.

As a part of council’s Virtual Garden Celebration in 2020, the inaugural John Ruyg Encouragement Award was presented to the gardeners who shared John’s passion for gardens, the environment and community connection.

John was a well-respected arborist who previously worked at Latrobe City Council before starting his business, JR’s Treemendous Landscapes, in 2004.

A resident of Callignee, his family was one of 247 who lost their homes in the Churchill Black Saturday bushfire on February 7, 2009.

After the bushfire, he worked tirelessly in support of the community to assess dangerous trees and encourage revegetation, under an initiative funded

by Latrobe City.

The school received the John Ruyg Encouragement Award in recognition of the school creating a wonderful space and programs to encourage children to enjoy gardening.

Students have created artwork features that complement the uniqueness of each garden around the school.

The school’s gardening activity is supported by community volunteers and teachers.

“John was renowned across Latrobe City for his passion for trees and gardening, and he would have been so proud to see this award, named in his honour, presented to the school community of Newborough East Primary School,” Mayor Sharon Gibson said.

THE Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman Kate Carnell is urging the federal government to establish a revenuecontingent loan scheme for small businesses, to provide them with the cash flow they need to survive the next 12 months.

With government support measures being withdrawn, banks continuing to subject small business borrowers to onerous credit assessment processes, rent relief ending and the impact of recent lockdowns and border closures, Ms Carnell says access to finance could mean the difference between life and death for many small businesses.

“Unfortunately it’s a perfect storm scenario especially for those small businesses that haven’t been able to fully recover from the COVID crisis,” Ms Carnell said.

“Access to credit will be critical to keeping those otherwise viable small businesses afloat, particularly over the coming months as support measures are phased out and the bills start flowing in again.”

Ms Carnell is calling on the federal government to introduce a revenue-contingent loan program for small businesses, similar to HECS, requiring borrowers to repay when their turnover reaches a designated level.

The loan would be Government-funded and

capped at a percentage of the small business’ annual revenue. Applicants would need to satisfy a viability test conducted by an accredited adviser to be eligible.

“Sudden lockdowns and border closures have heavily impacted small businesses in recent weeks - it’s no wonder they are scared to take on additional bank debt given conditions can deteriorate so rapidly,” Ms Carnell said.

“Even in the best of times, small businesses have struggled to secure finance. Taking into account the enormous challenges they are now facing, the fallout of insufficient working capital could be devastating, not only for small business owners and their staff, but for the broader economy.

“The latest ASIC data shows external administrator appointments were up by 23% in December 2020 and economists are predicting the number of businesses entering voluntary administration to rise this year.

“A revenue contingent loan scheme would give small businesses the confidence they need to seek funding, so they can survive and employ again. It’s essential to Australia’s economic recovery.”

Small business boost

HAMSA Healing opened its doors in Traralgon last week, thanks to a small business grant for Black Fox Tattoo.

The tattoo studio received one of the Latrobe City Council’s second round of small business grants at the end of 2020, and used the money to add an extension to its Henry Street premises for the brand new business.

Black Fox Tattoo owner Sue Gillespie said the renovation would not have been possible without the hard work of local tradesmen. “I was very fortunate to have some really good local tradies, the small guys were prepared to come in prior to Christmas and that was amazing,� she said. “We managed to use the grant for a new business, new employment and used local tradies in the process. “The businesses really complement one another for sure ... it was fantastic for the council to be giving out these grants.�

Ms Gillespie said she applied for the second round of grants in October last year.

“When (Rebekah) agreed to start the business out the back I think the council was very keen to open a new business, promote employment and these premises cried out for that,� she said.

Hamsa Healing owner Rebekah Carlon said it was an exciting opportunity to open her own business. “Sue came to me and offered me the opportunity to do what I love to do... it was great,� she said. “Since we opened on Tuesday things have been good, we had a couple of clients come in and now I am just working on getting the word out. “It is a holistic healing centre, we do beauty therapy; your waxing and tinting and all of those basics then we also delve into body treatments, spa treatments, reiki healing and more for the spiritual side, there are two treatment rooms. “It is very exciting, I had a previous business in Townsville so it is great to be able to bring that down here and make this almost a one-stop-shop for everything with tattoo, beauty and healing.�

Melanoma represents only a tiny 4% of all skin cancers. They are potentially lethal but removed early they are no more serious than any of the other skin cancers.

The greatest risk factor for a skin cancer or melanoma, is having had a previous skin cancer or melanoma.

The majority are caused by cumulative life-time sun exposure.

Skin cancer surveillance is a simple and diligent process of examination and scrutiny by an experienced doctor and should involve a top-to-toe careful examination of all surfaces of the body.

This should be done with good illumination and under magnification and then any blemishes that appear ‘NQR’, not quite right, should be removed.

These lesions are either squamous cell cancers or basal cell cancers.

Basal cell cancer’s arise from the deepest layer of the skin and are the commonest form of human cancer.

Both squamous cell cancers and basal cell cancers can appear on any part of the body but they tend to occur in areas with the highest exposure to the sun, which is on the face, the back of the hands and the legs.

These lesions, or blemishes, start usually as a reddened or crusty spot, a patch of dry skin and if they persist for more than a month, then they should be seen by a doctor who is used to seeing lots of skin cancers such as at Gippsland Melanoma and Skin Cancer Clinic.

The features of a melanoma are usually summarized as the ABC’s.

A is for Asymmetry or for not being quite circular.

B is for Border irregularity where the edge of the spot looks wavy or jagged.

C is for Colour with the spot having an uneven colour with a darker area within it.

D is for Diameter, with the size of the spot being wider than the barrel of the pencil or a pen, larger than 6mm in diameter.

Lastly E is for Evolving, change or increasing in size.

These typical characteristics are found easily on the web when looking for tips on how to spot a suspicious spot.

The commonest skin cancers however are non-melanoma skin cancers which can appear as crusty spots

Sun and UV exposure however is cumulative and whilst messages in print and on television warn about the dangers of the sun it is almost impossible to live in Gippsland without experiencing some degree of being sun-kissed or sun burnt.

An annual skin check takes only a short time but it can save a lot of time later dealing with a melanoma or other serious skin cancer.

The commonest skin cancer is not melanoma and fortunately these tend to be rare.

If detected and removed early, that may be all that is needed.

FOOTBALL/NETBALL MID GIPPSLAND

THE new-look Mid Gippsland Football Netball League has released its 2021 season draw.

The competition features 13 clubs following a tumultuous off-season.

The MGFNL welcomed six former Alberton clubs in Stony Creek, Toora, Foster, Meeniyan Dumbalk United, Tarwin and Fish Creek in August, but lost long-time clubs Trafalgar and Yallourn-Yallourn North.

Trafalgar made the switch to the Ellinbank competition, while Yallourn-Yallourn North will play in the North Gippsland Football Netball League.

The draw features 18 rounds, with Round 1 slated for April 10.

Boolarra will host Mirboo North, Fish Creek and Tarwin square-off, Foster welcomes Hill End for a twilight contest, MDU plays Toora, Morwell East travels to Newborough and Thorpdale faces Yinnar.

Stony Creek have the extra week to prepare for the season with the bye in the opening round.

BOWLS WEST GIPPSLAND MIDWEEK PENNANT

Each club will play 16 matches and have two byes during the season, with multiple clubs having byes in Round 14, Round 15, Round 16 and Round 17.

bye in the final round before the finals series gets underway on the weekend of August 14-15.

The grand final is scheduled to be played on Saturday, September 4.

MIDWEEK Pennant resumes tomorrow with the improving Newborough travelling to Warragul to take on last season’s premiers who are in need of a win to get closer to the top four teams.

Newborough will be keen to maintain their position in the top four.

Home ground advantage could give Warragul the victory.

Bottom teams Morwell and Traralgon RSL face off at Morwell with the home team desperate for a win to maintain touch with RSL who have the chance to solidify their position in Division 1 for next year without having to rely on other teams to help them maintain their position in the top division. Morwell should have enough home ground advantage to sneak a win over Morwell.

Traralgon visits Morwell Club with the home team battling to stay in touch with the top four and Traralgon looking to maintain second place of the ladder and the coveted double chance in the finals.

Morwell Club could provide an upset win on their home turf.

Drouin travels to Trafalgar with the home team needing to win to stay in fourth place.

Drouin have struggled at times on the grass,

however, the Trafalgar green should be in good condition and Drouin will be favourites to remain top of the ladder.

In Division 2, Morwell Club (2) hosts Warragul (2) and will be aiming for a win to keep in touch with the top four. Morwell Club (2) tipped to win.

In the other important match Morwell (2) travels to Newborough (2) with Newborough (2) confident of winning on the grass. Newborough (2) tipped to win.

Top team Traralgon (2) should be too strong for Moe and Neerim District welcomes Yinnar in a match that will see the winner get nearer to a place in the top four and a chance to make the finals and gain promotion to Division 1. Neerim should get home in a tight tussle.

Following this round will be the round on Australia Day. West Gippsland Bowls Division is playing on Australia Day as the late start to the season due to COVID-19 gave the governing body no other choice in being able to fit all matches in prior to Easter.

This may interfere with the plans of some players however this has been a season like no other and is a minor problem compared with many of the situations everyone have been in through during COVID-19.

SHEPPARTON golfer Kyle Michel held his nerve down the final stretch of holes to secure a first professional triumph in the Latrobe City WIN TV Traralgon Pro-Am on Friday.

Michel, 24, displayed composure beyond his years in testing weather conditions for a three-shot victory at Traralgon Golf Club.

“I like playing in the wind and the tougher conditions,” he said.

Michel carded consecutive rounds of 68 for a 36-hole score of eight-under par 136.

He started the second day two shots adrift of surprise overnight leader, amateur Konrad Ciupek, who sizzled his way around Traralgon with a sixunder 66 on Thursday.

But Ciupek could not repeat the heroics on Friday, carding a disappointing 81, opening the door for Michel to pounce.

A 40-minute lightning delay was called after Michel took the lead with a birdie on the second.

When play resumed, Michel added another birdie on the sixth as David Bransdon, a two-time winner of this event, and Daniel Gale loomed as the challengers.

“The rain started coming down pretty heavy on the eighth and I just left myself perfectly uphill and I just it hit perfect and it went in. I felt I was taking one off the field on that hole with a birdie there,” Michel said.

Gale got to within two shots early on the back nine as Michel bogeyed 10 and 11, but he soon steadied and made sure of victory with an eagle on the par-5 16th.

Gale and Bransdon finished joint-runners up on five-under 139.

Defending champion Matt Millar could not recapture the form he displayed 12 months earlier, carding rounds of 72 and 71 to finish in a tie for eighth place at one under par.

Tournament drawcard Marcus Fraser had a tough couple of days, carding rounds of 74 and 75 to finish five-over par in a tie for 33rd.

But back to Michel, who is no stranger to success, having enjoyed a stellar career as an amateur.

He turned professional in late 2019, following in the footsteps of fellow Sheppartonians in Jarrod Lyle and Leighton Lyle.

Michel collected a first prize cheque of $4490.

He was not the only Goulburn Valley product to enjoy tournament success at Traralgon.

Grace St Just were joint winners of the Women’s Pro-Am event.

Jean held a five-shot advantage heading into day two after carding a 73 on Thursday, but a 79 on Friday allowed St Just to narrow the gap.

St Just signed for a 74, which left her and Jean tied at eight-over par 152.

They each received a cheque of $1875 for the victory, while Steffanie Vogel finished in third place a further shot adrift.

Traralgon Golf Club spokesperson Ian Whitehead said the event again proved the highlight of the calendar.

“It’s a great event,” Whitehead said.

“We (the Pro-Am committee) are a well-oiled machine ... but there is an enormous amount of work that goes into organising this event.”

Whitehead said the impacts of COVID-19 did bring some changes to how the event is usually staged.

“Usually we have a shotgun start where everybody starts together, but because of COVID we moved it to a rolling start,” he said.

“It means instead of everybody being here at 7.30 in the morning and teeing off across multiple holes, we started at 7am with eight-minute intervals and the afternoon groups started at 11am.”

Whitehead said the Traralgon Classic was played in conjunction with the Traralgon Pro-Am leading to bumper numbers on the fairways.

“There were 80 professionals here, including eight ladies, and 50 amateurs in the Classic, as well as 100 amateurs who are Traralgon Golf Club members, sponsors or guests.”

The Traralgon Classic was won by Toby Walker, who fired rounds of 69 and 73 to finish six shots clear of Yallourn golfer Paul Andrijczak and Konrad Ciupek. Jeneath Wong was the ladies winner.

Wet weather impacts felt in round of LVDCL CRICKET LVDCL PREMIER A GRADE & A GRADE

THAT old proverb “timing is everything” rung true on a rain-affected day of LVDCL action on Saturday.

Wet weather foiled what had loomed as wins for Churchill and Morwell in the Premier A Grade competition, with both sides just one wicket away from first innings success in their respective matches.

Churchill thwarted

TRAFALGAR started the day at George Cain Oval needing another 259 runs for victory against Churchill after resuming at 0/2.

Despite openers Liam White and Brodie Burgess each scoring 22, Churchill’s bowlers soon got right on top.

Steve Warr and Ross Whelpdale toiled for long spells with good effect.

Warr bowled 26 overs taking 3/35, while Whelpdale conjured 2/32 from his 20 overs.

But as batsmen fell at the other end, Trafalgar skipper Rhys Holdsworth remained steadfast at the crease.

Holdsworth and Ryan Bishop (16) put on 40 to lift the Ships from 5/71, but Bishop’s departure and that followed by Billy Claridge, Daniel Heathcote and Riley White had Churchill within striking distance of victory.

No.11 Jackson Noonan strolled to the crease to join Holdsworth, the pair thwarting the Cobras’ efforts with a 16-run unbeaten partnership which frustrated Churchill, who bowled 79 overs on day two, and delivered salvation for Trafalgar.

Holdsworth was unbeaten on 55, his first halfcentury of the season, having faced 142 deliveries in more than two and half hours at the crease.

Rain stops Morwell

Latrobe seals crucial points

LATROBE gained first innings points against Raiders at Yinnar.

The Sharks needed just two runs, something they achieved quickly through Ronnie Chokununga, but when the Zimbabwean fell to Harrison McColl for 44, Latrobe declared at 2/101, a lead of 10 runs.

Morwell Tigers-Yinnar batted for a second time and were teetering at 5/31 when play was halted.

Sharks skipper Chris Johnson produced a commanding spell to take 4/3 from eight overs (including seven maidens).

CATS seal outright points

IN the A Grade competition, CATS sealed outright points against Centrals at John Black Oval.

CATS resumed with a lead of 26 runs and added a further 95.

The majority from the blazing blade of all-rounder Callum Stewart before he was caught and bowled

by Corey Pollard on 70.

Pollard also took the wicket of Dylan Keyhoe (20) on his way to figures of 2/36 from 4.1 overs.

Facing a 121-run deficit, Centrals had the job in front of them and fell victim to the one-two punch of the mercurial Stewart and former Zimbabwean Test man Tinashe Panyangara.

Stewart took 5/25 from 23.3 outstanding overs (including 23.3 maidens) to finish with 10 wickets for the match.

The all-rounder certainly relishes the chance to bowl longer spells in two-day cricket, having taken seven wickets at 20 in one-day games this season.

Panyangara proved a fine foil with 5/58 as Centrals were bowled out for 88.

Pollard battled hard in a losing cause to top-score for 31, his best of the season.

Panthers down Eagles

JEERALANG-BOOLARRA held firm to collect the points against Traralgon West at Jack Canavan Oval.

The Panthers went into day two needing 44 runs for victory with seven wickets in hand.

Despite nightwatchman Alex Devonshire going early, Leon Risdon’s reliable batting settled any nerves.

Sanitha de Mel made 12 before being dismissed

by Salman Rasool, the first of two wickets to fall on 84 to give the Eagles a slight glimmer of hope.

The second was Risdon, who was trapped lbw

by Traralgon West spinner Luke Sumner, but not before he had brought up a deserved 50.

That set the scene for Sam Mazou and Craig Dekaste, who guided Jeeralang-Boolarra to the points.

Mazou scored 30 with Dekaste unbeaten on 16 when play was halted with the Panthers 7/132.

Sumner produced his best spell of the season to finish with 4/34 from 19 overs, while Rasool’s 14 overs returned 2/13.

MIRBOO North breathed a sigh of relief after holding out for a draw with Morwell.

The hosts went into day two needing another 130 for victory, but never looked likely due to the efforts of evergreen Morwell all-rounder Brendan Brincat.

Brincat bowled with relentless line and length, returning the figures of 6/26 from 25 overs, which included 11 maidens.

He cut a swathe through the Mirboo North batting line-up, claiming the wickets of opener Callum Polo (24), Hudson Kerr, captain Jesse Giardina, Ethan Woodall, Madura Perera and Shane Peters.

Mirboo North were teetering at 9/81, having faced 63 overs, when the players came off the ground due to wet weather.

MORWELL export Dennis Neale made his Australian Baseball League debut for the Canberra Cavalry last Thursday.

Neale, 30, pitched the sixth inning of his side’s 9-7 loss to the Melbourne Aces.

The left-handed pitcher conceded five hits and four runs despite throwing 26 strikes in his 39 pitches on the mound.

Neale was replaced in the seventh inning by former Churchill and South Gippsland hurler Grant Irving.

Irving, 33, allowed just one hit in his two innings of work, throwing just 29 pitches in the process.

The defeat saw the Cavalry slip to a 4-6 win-loss record and the team from the nation’s capital suffered further defeats to the Aces on Friday and Saturday to remain in fifth place on the ABL ladder.

Melbourne Aces led the way with a 10-5 win-loss record ahead of the Adelaide Giants (6-3) and Perth Heat (5-4) before yesterday’s round of matches.

Chapman lifts Imperials Flood of runs puts Sharks right on top

IT was a run fest at Roger Ries Oval as Toongabbie won the toss and sent Ex Students into bat which would prove to be a disastrous decision.

Ex Students opened with Matt Dyke and Jordan Gilmore which was a masterstroke from skipper Lee Stockdale as the pair put on 141 for the first wicket before Dyke was dismissed for 35.

Some relief came shortly after for the Rams as Stockdale made a second ball duck but up the other end Gilmore was having a field day, smashing runs for fun on his way to a run a ball hundred.

Gilmore is in a rich vein of form at the moment and has to be the best batsman doing the rounds in Region 7.

He’s currently averaging a whopping 127.25 and has 509 TDCA runs under his belt already for the season which is just massive and no doubt he has Lee Stockdale’s Ex Students A Grade record in his sights for runs scored, needing another 235 runs to achieve that feat and maybe he could then get another 350 to knock off Steve Nicholls record of 859 runs from the 09/10 season.

Not to be outdone Jackson McMahon joined Gilmore before the superstar departed for 129 from 122 balls and went about his own business, setting a great platform for what would be a big score as well.

Batting with Jake Best the two put on 117 for the fourth wicket before Best got out which is where McMahon then decided to explode and lift the run rate. Steady wickets fell at the other end but McMahon was superb, making a magnificent 110 from 138 balls as he guided the Sharks to a massive score of 9/376.

Magpies closing in despite late Rovers fightback

IN the final match of the round Glengarry won the toss and sent Rovers in on what looked to be a difficult wicket at Fred King Oval and at 4/23 Glengarry looked as if they would roll right over the young Rovers batsmen.

Captain Dougal Williams and Mitch Floyd were then able to put on a bit of a partnership for the fifth wicket, taking the score up to 85 until Floyd was dismissed for 36.

Again wickets started to tumble and after regrouping to be 5/85, Rovers then found themselves all out for 102 after 55 overs.

As mentioned before Dougal Williams (35) tried all he could as did Floyd and Kade Marsh (11*), but more was needed from the top order.

Rovers then had two choices … to just roll over and let Glengarry get the win or get out there and fight like hell to put the wind up the Magpies and make them a little nervous.

It was good to see Rovers taking the second option as Ewan Williams and Floyd got to work, knocking over Al Jenkin, Nat Freitag, Paul Henry and Sam Marks with the score still under 20.

All of sudden 102 looked like a huge mountain to climb, but luckily for Glengarry Hamish Busk and Ben Marks consolidated as they took the score up to 59 but more importantly didn’t let another wicket fall on a difficult day for batting.

Williams and Floyd both finished with two wickets each and you can’t help but feel just one more in the sheds would have put Rovers in the box seat but now, with only 43 runs for victory, Glengarry should get the win next week.

DIFFICULT conditions welcomed the return of two-day cricket this weekend. but it didn’t put some of the TDCA’s best players off their game as runs flowed in some matches while bowlers dominated in others.

Imperials captain Brett Chapman has put the rest of the TDCA on notice with a defiant 84 not out against Yarram & District at Catterick Crescent.

Imps won the toss and again opened up with Nat Campbell and Ryan Morley after they put on a good partnership last week.

With the score on 29, Morley was dismissed for nine which brought Chapman to the crease, where he would then stay for the remainder of the innings.

Nat Campbell got out for 28, but he has now had two good starts and looks like he is batting a little bit more measured now so its been a good move so far from Imperials.

Wickets then started to fall at regular intervals for Imps until young gun Mitch Bellingham came in and showed some resistance, batting with his captain in a partnership of 55 for the eighth wicket until he was brought undone by Mark Smallwood in his first A Grade game for the season.

Unfortunately for Chapman only three more runs were added to the score after Bellingham’s dismissal and he was left stranded with very sore shoulders having carried his team the entire innings.

Yarram & District were very good with the ball and were able to apply enough pressure and win the big moments of the innings, not letting Imperials settle or occupy the crease long enough to get that score up past 200.

Welles Jenkins filled his beak, claiming a fivewicket haul from 18 overs while Daniel O’Keefe did the damage at the top and Mark Smallwood finished off the tail both claiming two wickets each.
