Taylor said the project represented an “enormous future” for the Latrobe Valley, along with export opportunities and developing a domestic hydrogen market. He said it would also provide opportunities to create low-emissions industries for the Valley, particularly just two days after the news that Yallourn would be closing in 2028. “This is great grr news for the future of the Valley in building the hydrogen industry. We want to open up

this opportunity as quickly as we can,” Mr Taylor said. “My heart goes out to the 500 workers at Yallourn, we want to create opportunities so they can use these skills sets, we have an extraordinary skills set in this regi gion i in industry and engi gineering. i “We have the potential to be world leaders in the production and export of hydrogen and this project is developing the technology gy y to do that.” The one-year HESC pilot plant

is testing the capability to convert brown coal into hydrogen gas, which will be transported to Port of Hastings and then liquifi fied i and shipped to Japan. The liquifi fied i hydrogen will then be transported in a world first, purpose built carrier, the Suiso Frontier, which is expected to arrive for its first fii shipment toward the end of this year.
