LOY Yang A reported 31 Environment Protection Authority licence breaches in the past five years, according to data compiled by environmental groups. Figures crunched by the Australia Beyond Coal alliance shows that AGL Loy Yang A licence breaches contributed 21 per cent of all Victorian and NSW EPA licence breaches since 2015. Some of these breaches related to strong winds blowing fugitive dust off the mine site, and some incidents of contaminated water. Yallourn reported four licence breaches in the same timeframe. However, Yallourn unit breakdowns accounted for 19 per cent of all power station trips across the

National Energy market from November 2017 to November 2020, with 56 incidents. Loy Yang A reported 41 breakdowns and Loy Yang B reported 12 in nearly the past two years. AGL was slapped with $1.3 million in fines for breaches across its portfolio, with Loy Yang A and the Bayswater and Liddell plants in NSW making up about three quarters of all violations. Environment Victoria campaigns manager Nick Aberle described Yallourn and Loy Yang A’s track records as “concerning” and he reiterated the need for a Latrobe Valley transition plan. “These are amongst the worst-performing coal power stations in the country,” Dr Aberle said. “It is widely accepted that these old power stations

will not be around as long as the companies are pretending.” Dr Aberle told The Express a lot of information about coal pollution was buried in obscure or hardto-understand government websites, but power station licence conditions were in place to protect communities. “Any breach of those licence conditions is a problem, but we’re seeing multiple breaches every year,” he said. “That means people and the environment are being exposed to pollution that they really should not be getting exposed to.” An AGL spokeswoman questioned the inconsistent methodology applied to the data analysis in the Australia Beyond Coal report. The spokeswoman pointed to at least one publicly

listed licence breach from the neighbouring Loy Yang B that was missing from the report. “AGL is Australia’s largest generator and we take our role as an essential services provider very seriously,” she said. “AGL works cooperatively with all environmental agencies to ensure we comply with all of our environmental and regulatory obligations.” An EnergyAustralia spokesman said Yallourn’s generators were taken offline for monitoring, inspections and routine repairs, “on top of unplanned maintenance”. He said the company had recently completed a $65 million upgrade on unit one. “As a result, so far this summer on the top five demand days, Yallourn has been available 94 per cent of the time,” he said.

A TRARALGON man, 36, had his vehicle impounded for 30 days for alleged drink driving offences in Traralgon on Saturday night. Officers intercepted a car on Shakespeare Street about 9.15pm and spoke to the driver. The man underwent a preliminary breath test and was requested to undergo an evidentiary test where he returned an alleged blood alcohol reading of 0.321 per cent. His car was impounded with costs of $1005 and he is expected to be charged on summons for drink driving offences. He also received a penalty notice for breaching Chief Health Officer directions.

A MIRBOO East truckie fears parts of the Grand Ridge Road are a “fatality waiting to happen” with B-double drivers being forced onto the wrong side of the road due to inaction on low-hanging trees. B-double driver Brenton Gration said he had been waiting for authorities to trim low branches that caused $3000 worth of damage to one of his trucks and loss of a week’s work. Mr Gration said the worst section was between Boolarra South and Olsens Road, which is a designated heavy vehicle route used by log trucks. “I have had so many close calls that one day there will be a massive accident because I’m forced onto the wrong side of the road trying to dodge a tree,” Mr Gration said. “Log trucks now have to veer onto the wrong side of the road to avoid the low trees. “It’s not like one tree here and there, it’s like a canopy and they need to trim every tree.” The interstate hay transporter said he had put in more than 20 calls to both Regional Roads Victoria

and South Gippsland Shire, but instead had been given the run-around. Mr Gration said he occasionally saw the odd contractor cut branches, but the issue was getting steadily worse. “I had this car follow me one day and all these sticks and leaves were being hit off the top of my truck. I hit this massive branch and it fell straight onto the road in front of the car behind me,” he said. “He hit the brakes straight away just in time, but even he said it wasn’t my fault. It’s ridiculous.” The Department of Transport stated it carries out monthly inspections on the Grand Ridge Road known as the Boolarra Road, and undertakes inspections if the community reports a hazard. It also stated the department completed 119 vegetation management jobs on Boolarra Road since 2019 and 29 this financial year. “We routinely inspect over 3500km of arterial roadsides in Gippsland to help keep our roads safe and reduce hazards,” Department of Transport Gippsland director Sara Rhodes-Ward said. “Managing roadside trees and vegetation forms a huge part of our ongoing maintenance program.”

MORWELL-BASED government renewable energy agency Solar Victoria is putting on more staff to expand its programs and work out of the new GovHub on Church Street. The six jobs on offer include five customer experience officers and a team leader, the new staff will work with the existing Morwell and Melbourne-based Solar Victoria teams. Solar Victoria was launched in Morwell in 2018 to deliver the Victorian government’s $1.3 billion Solar Homes Program. The agency has about 35 staff based in Gippsland and is about to re-locate from Hazelwood Road to the brand the new $30 million GovHub in the next couple of months. It comes as government figures revealed that more than half a million homes have installed rooftop PV generating almost a third of the state’s total residential electricity. Stage 4 lockdown

REGIONAL Victoria is now in the midst of its strictest lockdown since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. On Friday, Premier Daniel Andrews announced a ‘circuit breaker’, five-day lockdown that will last until 11.59pm on Wednesday, February 17. Mr Andrews said we must assume that there are other cases in the community that we do not know of. “Victorians will be well familiar with UK strain ... it is so hyper-infectious and fast,” he said. “The way in which they (people with this strain) are presenting is a significant concern to us ... we are having cases test positive in rapid time, by the time we find that case as positive they have already infected their close contacts. “I know it’s not the place that we wanted to be in. “However, we’ve all given so much, we’ve all done so much. We’ve built something precious, and we have to make difficult decisions, and do difficult things, in order to defend what we’ve built. “I am confident that this short, sharp circuit breaker will be effective. We will be able to smother this. We will be able to prevent it getting away from us.” There are only four reasons to leave your home; shopping for food and essential items, care and caregiving and work or study - if you can’t do it from home and exercise for two hours per day. Under Stage 4 restrictions, residents must wear a mask when leaving their home, even when outside, travel no further than five kilometres from their home and have no guests at home or for events. Cafes and restaurants are now take-away only and schools, gyms and non-essential retail closed their doors. The streets of the Latrobe Valley were desolate, on a weekend that was sure to be a busy one for florists and restaurants, with Valentine’s Day and Lunar New Year. There were reports of grocery staples flying off local shelves on Friday, but the shelves seemed to have been replenished by Saturday. For the next few days, even shops like Kmart, Harvey Norman and Bunnings Warehouse closed their doors. Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive officer Paul Guerra said businesses need certainty that this lockdown will end after the five-day timeline. “Business needs this reassurance to prepare to welcome staff and patrons back and secure stock and other logistics,” he said. “The Victorian Chamber is urging the state government to provide targeted support for hospitality venues to compensate for perished food and cancellation costs not covered by insurance for the affected sectors. “Without this, the reality is doors will close indefinitely and jobs will be lost. “A robust and reliable quarantine system and the effective roll-out of a vaccine is the best opportunity we have to provide the confidence that businesses need to invest and employ so that we can rebuild the economy. “We need clarity on both aspects.” Morwell resident Michael Miller expressed a sentiment felt by many in regional Victoria following o ow g tthee Premier’s e e s announcement. a ou ce

“I think Andrews has gone overboard a bit, maybe he should just concentrate on Melbourne,” he said. “Regional Victoria has been OK for many, many, many months.” Victoria recorded three new cases of coronavirus on Sunday, two locally-acquired and one in hotel quarantine. The state currently has a total of 21 cases, on Sunday Victoria received 21,475 tests. The two new locally acquired cases included a woman and three-year-old child from different households, linked to the Holiday Inn cluster, which now stands at 16 cases. The woman, who was also a quarantine worker, and the child attended a private dining venue on Sydney Road, Coburg in Melbourne’s north, on February 6. The 38 other guests at the event have, so far, tested negative for the virus. COVID-response commander Jeroen Weimar said on Sunday all primary close contacts that had been identified were spoken to. “I’d really encourage people who are in Coburg,

Reservoir, Southbank, South Melbourne to really be extra vigilant and come forward and get tested,” he said. The state’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said yesterday the key focus was on shutting down the spread of the UK variant of coronavirus. “We’re now looking at a virus that is 40 to 70 per cent more infectious than the previous variants,” he said. “Whether it’s 40 per cent or 70 per cent that is disturbing and we don’t want this variant of concern, the B117 strain ... to be in the community and transmitting.” New exposure sites were added to the list in Melbourne’s north, they included the Elite Swimming in Pascoe Vale, Woolworths at Broadmeadows, Ferguson Plarre Bakehouses at Broadmeadows and the Oak Park Sports and Aquatic Centre at Pascoe Vale. School students to learn from home during next three days SCHOOLS across the state were notified on Friday afternoon that students would not be on campus today. School students will return to learning from home until Thursday, unless they need onsite supervision as the children of essential workers. During the five-day lockdown, universities and TAFEs also closed or moved to online learning. But, childcare and kindergartens were allowed to remain open. One of these schools, St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School, decided to have a pupil-free day for primary students on Monday and start online learning for the next few days. St Paul’s principal Cameron Herbert said “it was certainly challenging for schools to be notified of a lockdown at such short notice”. “I think everyone is growing accustomed to having to adapt quickly without much warning,” he said. “We have an excellent online learning platform and virtual classrooms through MyStPauls which work well in conjunction with video conferencing. “I am fortunate to have a very flexible, skilful staff of teachers at St Paul’s. “They are very well prepared and take things like this in their stride. “Most of our families are very understanding and supportive as well. “Let’s hope this lockdown is only for five days, but we have planned well ahead in case it goes for longer.”

LRH tightens visitor rules LATROBE Regional hospital will not allow visitors for the duration of Victoria’s five-day lockdown. However, there are a few exceptions to the rule, people will be allowed to enter the hospital for end of life reasons, as a support partner to someone giving birth or one parent can accompany a child. The same restrictions will apply to aged care homes run by Latrobe Regional Hospital, no visitors except for end of life reasons. Visiting hours to the hospital will remain dependent on the state government’s health directives. Before the lockdown, visiting hours were still heavily regulated, visitors were still required to

wear masks and temperature checks a condition of entry. LRH chief operating officer and chief nurse Don McRae said “the snap lockdown caught us all by surprise”. “But, these are the actions we have to get used to while the virus is in circulation,” he said. “Although the larger outbreaks this year have been in Melbourne, we need to remember that many of us in the Valley and beyond have travelled into the metro area and may have been to one of the exposure sites, or come in contact with someone who has.” LRH urges anyone with fever, chills or sweats, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, loss or change in sense of smell or taste

JPs return to Traralgon

LOCAL Justice of the Peace will recommence their duties at Traralgon Police Station on Thursday, January 18. JPs have traditionally provided a document signing station as a community service, however this had to be stopped due to COVID-19 restrictions. As well as a voluntary community service, the document signing station assists in reducing the workload of local police officers. JPs will be available each Tuesday and Thursday at Traralgon Police Station from the hours of 11am to 2pm.

Morwell RSL trivia night fundraiser

MORWELL RSL intends to sponsor three or four veterans or dependents to complete the Kokoda Track in June 2022. To raise funds for that trip, a trivia night will be held on the third Saturday of every month throughout 2021. The first trivia night will take place on Saturday, February 20. LATROBE City Council selected the YMCA to operate the Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre, which is set to open in March. The YMCA was chosen by Latrobe City Council to operate GRAC after a competitive tender process. YMCA will work with council to provide industryleading programs that deliver improved recreation, health and wellbeing outcomes to the community while ensuring GRAC’s financial sustainability. To celebrate Latrobe Leisure’s new arrangement with the YMCA, Latrobe Leisure will be extending its current gold membership for the price of bronze. Latrobe Leisure members will be able to access the new Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre in Traralgon, with reciprocal membership rights. Latrobe City Mayor Sharon Gibson said Latrobe Leisure members are bound to be in awe of the modern and first-class facilities at GRAC. “For example, if you are Latrobe Leisure Bronze - Aquatic member, you can use the pool at GRAC,” she said. “If you are a Latrobe Leisure Gold member, you will have access to the equivalent facilities at GRAC. “It’s a new era for our community as GRAC nears closer to opening. “Preparations for the opening are gathering pace and a range of finishing touches will be made over the coming weeks, all in readiness for the doors to be swung open for our first visitors.” GRAC will include two large water slides, an indoor water play zone, warm water therapy pool with spa, learn to swim pool, sauna and steam rooms, and wellness centre. Baw Baw roads are set to be sealed

A TOTAl of 148,000 square metres of road surfaces will be resealed this year, after Baw Baw Shire Council awarded a tender for the works at its meeting on Wednesday, February 10. Sections of 16 local roads across the Shire will be resealed to improve safety and access for road users as part of council’s annual Road Resealing Program The contract for the works was awarded to Fulton Hogan Industries Pty Ltd for the total sum of $930,136.15 (excluding GST), following a tender process in 2020. “The Road Resealing Program will improve the safety and lifespan of rural roads across the shire,

with a particular emphasis on Yarragon,Trafalgar, Darnum and surrounding localities this year. Our residents have told us that the quality of our roads needs to be prioritised, and we’re working hard to make sure we deliver this,” Deputy Mayor Michael Leaney said. The annual program works to improve road surface conditions by spraying bitumen onto a road pavement and then rolling in a layer of uniformly sized stones to create a new surface. Asphalt works will also be carried out on five local roads with a total area of 8000 square metres, providing a new 40mm thick surface. The asphalt surfacing works will be completed

under Council’s Civil Works Contract by specialist asphalting contractors. Council allocates funding each year as part of the Capital Works Program for targeted road resealing works. Among the roads selected are ■ Trafalgar East, Heartsridge Road, from Millers Road to North Canal Road ■ Narracan, Narracan Connection Road, from Coalville Road to Schoﬁelds Road ■ Trafalgar East, North Canal Road, from Richards Road to Embletons Road, ■ Trafalgar, Old Sale Road, from Willow Grove Road to Davey Road

The day’s longest priced winner arrived in the Morwell Club Morwell Cup (1108m) when $12 shot Be Miss Luchy staved off all comers. Prepared at Foster by Ken Fythe of Rockpecker fame, Be Miss Luchy was given a peach of a ride by jockey Daniel Moor and kept kicking when it mattered to outlast Trygve and Orakai in a slugging finish. It could pay to follow Iloveannie, who was truckloaded to start $3.70, but ran into a series of roadblocks in the home straight. The combination of trainer Charlotte Littlefield and jockey Ben Allen came to the fore in the Old Sale Road Vet Newborough Cup (1614m). Haveyouzeena, a New Zealand-bred filly, had

shown spasmodic promise in her two previous starts, but brought her A Game to the Valley. The daughter of Zacinto belied her $10 starting price, powering home to score by a commanding five and half length margin from Vinrose, trained by Peter Gelagotis. The trip from Wangaratta proved a fruitful one for the Ledgers as Wadeema’s Girl held off two Bryce Stanaway-trained runners in the LV Drafting Yallourn North Cup (2423m). The staying race on the program proved just that and it was Wadeema’s Girl ($3.30) who proved superior from the rock-hard fit duo of Ventura Highway and Faltonius. Redsox appoint 2021 senior coaches BASEBALL

TRARALGON Redsox Baseball Club have finalised their senior coaches for 2021. After a difficult year in 2020 the club is confident in a strong rebound from COVID with the appointment of John Kus as head coach. A well-known figure in the club’s previous success, Kus will be joined by assistants Luke Hornstra and Jay Ziersch. Kus has big plans to fast track some of the club’s youth into the senior mix by involvement at senior training and getting them into senior games. The Redsox have some great juniors progressing well and will be providing subsidised junior fees this year to support local families that may have had a tough last 12 months. Under-10, 13, and 16 age groups will be able to join the club free this season “Having two very experienced assistants our

training sessions will be intense and interesting,” Kus said. Luke Hornstra started baseball at Traralgon as a seven year old and has represented Victoria at senior level. With five A Grade premierships as a player including two as a previous coach at Traralgon, Hornstra said his coaching goal this year was to bring together the club after a lengthy stint away and to ensure everyone enjoyed their time on and off the field while challenging themselves. Jay Ziersch has been playing baseball for more than 30 years. He has represented South Australia at junior and senior level, and played in the Australian Baseball League for many years. Ziersch has also represented Australia Under-19s and played college baseball in the United States. Training will commence shortly at the Redsox home base at Gathercole Drive, Traralgon. TRAFALGAR export Blair Clymo made his Victorian Premier Cricket debut for Casey-South Melbourne on February 6. Clymo batted at No.8 and scored a stylish run-a-ball 31 as the Swans lost to a starstudded St Kilda by 34 runs at Casey Fields. The right-handerhit two fours and a six during his 42-minute stay at the crease before falling to Saints paceman Simon O’Brien. The St Kilda line-up featured Test players Marcus Harris and Peter Handscomb as well as former Sheffield Shield wicketkeeper Adam Crosthwaite. Harris made 21 and Handscomb contributed nine, both falling victim to Sri Lankan legend Tillekaratne Dilshan, who joined Casey-South Melbourne earlier this season. The Saints posted 8/199, a target which proved beyond the Swans despite the best efforts of Clymo, Dilshan (30) and Devin Pollock, who top-scored with 31. Clymo, who started this campaign with Trafalgar in the LVDCL due to coronavirus restrictions before returning to Casey-South Melbourne when they were lifted in November, has been with the Swans for the past five seasons. He has progressed through the ranks from the fourths to the thirds and then the seconds. Clymo earned a first grade call-up after scoring 271 runs at 33.9 in the seconds this campaign.

AFL Gippsland’s area manager heads north FOOTBALL

ALL AFL Gippsland full time staff have returned to normal hours. There has been a change at the top, with former AFL Gippsland area manager Don Harley accepting the role of region manager for the Sunraysia Football-Netball League based in Mildura. Former AFL Gippsland commercial and operations manager Nick Fogarty has transitioned into the role of Gippsland area manager. In another change, Keith Whitford has retired after many years service providing support for SportsTG - the online program all local football-netball clubs use to enter results, keep records and submit clearances. Going forward, Annick Van Diesen has been engaged by AFL Victoria and will be the first point of call for all club, league and regions queries for Sports TG within Victoria.

THE sounds of silence told the story around the Moe racecourse yesterday. Despite horse racing continuing through lockdown, the restrictions introduced by Premier Daniel Andrews on Friday scuppered Moe Racing Club’s hopes of a bumper Local Cups and Community Race Day. In the end, the show went on, but only with licenced participants and a small band of other required staff on course. Seven Cups were run and won. The Mornington-based training partnership of Jason Warren and Dean Krongold combined with jockey Daniel Stackhouse to collect a double. Not A Zak ($1.50fav) justified his rating as the day’s hottest favourite with a workmanlike performance in the Moe Refrigeration Churchill Cup (1208m). The three-year-old son of El Roca had been minor placed in three of his previous five starts behind the likes of Cherry Tortoni, Crosshaven and Aysar. Stackhouse ensured Not A Zak was always in a prominent position and after making his move at the top of the straight, withstood a plucky challenge from Beautox to win by three quarters of a length. The second Cup which will take pride of place on the mantelpiece was the Ladbrokes Warragul Cup (1614m), the final race on the program. Sebsilk ($3.30) had his share of admirers pre-race and they were all smiles post-race after Stackhouse steered the four-year-old to score by a neck from Stoney Vista ($3.10fav). The win was the second in 18 career starts for the son of Sebring, who has shown good talent over a middle-distance trip. Moe trainer Allison Bennett took home the Monacellars Yarragon Cup (1208m) with former Tasmanian mare Knitting. Knitting ($10) landed some good bets after racing handy throughout thanks to a smart ride from apprentice jockey Mikaela Lawrence.
