RESIDENTS at a unit block in Moe say they are living in fear as a dilapidated, burnt out flat has started to attract “dangerous” visitors.

A unit at the Langford Street complex was gutted by fire about 10 months ago and has become a hangout for alleged illegal activity, according to tenants.

Police tape and protective boards cordoning off the unit have been slashed, and inside is littered with drug paraphernalia, empty alcohol jars and rubbish.

Tenants say the unit is frequented nightly by people using it for gatherings, but regular calls to police have done little to deter them.

One resident, whose identity has been withheld for privacy reasons,

said occupants of the building hold serious concerns for their safety.

“What’s happening in that house every night ... I’ve rung the police several times and what can they do?

They just say ‘move on’ ... we’re all scared,” he said.

“They put a big plaster board over (the window) and all they do is kick it in.

“They just come back, they have no

“Every night here is a danger. All the junkies come around the corner here ... I sleep with a knife by my bed and that’s to save myself.

Regional Victoria could take two steps on their size. A $251 million Licenced Venue Fund, with grants of between $10,000 and $30,000, was announced to support the state’s bars, restaurants, pubs, clubs, hotels and reception centres.

The state government said it will also partner with local business groups and chambers of commerce, with grants.

Payroll tax for businesses with payrolls of up to $10 million for the 2020-21 financial year will be deferred, while $137 million in waivers and deferrals of charges including liquor licence fees, congestion levy and increases to landfill levy will be introduced.

The 50 per cent stamp duty discount for commercial and industrial property across all of regional Victoria will be brought forward to January 1, 2021 and the Vacant Residential Land Tax will be waived for properties that are vacant in 2020.

“As we drive down case numbers and reach COVID Normal - we’re providing billions of dollars in support to make sure businesses make it through to COVID Normal,” Treasurer Tim Pallas said.

Planners say approve plant

LATROBE City planning officers have recommended councillors approve a permit to build a used lead and acid battery recycling facility at Hazelwood North.

Councillors are scheduled to vote on the controversial planning application at a special council meeting on Thursday night at 6pm.

Planning documents state that the proposal is “generally in accordance” with planning policy and is within the guidelines of an industrial zone.

Company Chunxing is proposing to process 50,000 tonnes of lead acid batteries into 28,000 tonnes of refined lead per year at a plant on Fourth Road.

The council recommendation includes a hefty list of conditions outlining development, landscaping, environmental audits, amenity, decommissioning and

engineering conditions. Latrobe City received submissions from 93 community members or groups, which included 89 objections against the proposal and a petition with 4909 signatures.

This comes as the Environment Protection Authority recently granted a Works Approval for the project to go ahead, but the application still needs the green light from council in order to proceed.

Council documents state environmental impact evaluations and the issuing of the EPA Works Approval deemed the plant would not affect the local community.

It said this had “demonstrated that the proposal should not have a negative impact on the health and well being of nearby sensitive land uses or the broader community”.

base of Latrobe City through the construction and operation of an industrial use in an appropriate location,” the documents state.

“In addition, the proposal would contribute to achieving resource recovery targets set by the state government through the extraction of materials from the ULABs for reuse.

“It is therefore recommended that a planning permit be issued, subject to the inclusion of appropriate conditions.”

Chunxing is investing $40 million in developing the facility and will employ 50 people including laboratory staff and administration.

The application has been subject to rigorous community objection with fears of potential lead contamination affecting the nearby area, spearheaded by the Hazelwood North Action Group.

PREMIER Daniel Andrews has forecast regional Victoria could take two steps towards COVID Normal this week.

As of yesterday there were 52 active COVID cases in regional Victoria and a 4.1 daily average, below the required threshold.

“I want regional Victoria to take not just one step, but if the numbers allow, two steps,” Mr Andrews said.

“We’re doing a power of work at the moment to be ready for that.”

Latrobe City has eight active coronavirus cases, four in the 3840 postcode, two in the 3856 postcode, one in the 3844 postcode and one in the 3825 postcode.

Some relaxation of restrictions came into effect today, including up to five people from a maximum of two households can meet outdoors.

Playgrounds and outdoor pools across regional Victoria will reopen under Stage 2 of the state government’s roadmap.

But the four reasons for leaving home - school or work, care or care giving, shopping and exercise remain the same.

Mr Andrews said it was pivotal

Customers of Gippsland Water set to be surveyed

GIPPSLAND Water customers will have a chance to rate their water and wastewater provider when it seeks their feedback this month.

Gippsland Water has joined with five other Victorian water corporations for an annual customer satisfaction survey seeking feedback on their satisfaction with its services, as well as ideas on planning for the future of the region.

Gippsland Water managing director Sarah Cumming said the 10-minute survey will help inform the organisation’s future priorities.

“We know our customer’s time is valuable and we’ve worked with our contractors to keep the survey short, while still capturing important insights.”

Ms Cumming said the survey was one way Gippsland Water ensured it was meeting customer’s expectations, both of service delivery, and of the broader role the organisation plays in the community.

“We play an essential role as a water and wastewater provider, but we’re also an employer of more than 250 people; a manager of environmental assets, farms and a compost facility; and a provider of sponsorship to support local community groups.

“This survey lets us know if we’re hitting the mark, and gives us ideas on how we can improve for the future.”

The phone survey will commence Wednesday, September 16 and continue for six weeks.

Australian-based contractors Insync and TKW will phone a random sample of 400 residential customers from each participating water corporation’s service area.

Ms Cumming said TKW Research will clearly identify themselves and will not being selling any product or service.

Busy times at Loy Yang B

LOY Yang B is about to start a 45-day planned maintenance outage as part of a $170 million generator upgrade on Unit 1.

More than 500 workers will be onsite to upgrade the turbine and replace the generator and turbine control system.

Major contractors BMC, Downer and GE had been appointed to undertake boiler, generator and main turbine upgrades.

Loy Yang B general manager Tony Hicks said there were already about 200 workers onsite carrying out preoutage work.

He stressed the majority of the additional workforce was from Gippsland, with some outside speciality labour brought in.

Mr Hicks said the upgrade would increase the unit’s capacity and reliability through the plant’s operating life as well as in readiness for summer peak demand.

He said the project was the second part of a major upgrade that was undertaken on the plant’s Unit 2 a year ago.

“This is a 45-day outage, it’s an aspirational target but we are really confident we will achieve it,” Mr Hicks said.

“It will be hard work, but we are confident, we are ahead of where we were previously with the last outage, as a lot of pre-outage work is on track.”

Mr Hicks said this outage also had the added challenge of incorporating COVID-19 safety measures and hygiene controls.

Some measures included providing additional lifts, kitchen and bathroom facilities, a temperature-testing station, staggered work times and compulsory face masks.

Staff members will also be required to wear a contact tracing device imported from Germany.

THE Latrobe Valley’s GP crisis is due to a “maldistribution� of doctors working across the state and not caused by a shortage of medical practitioners, according to a new report from the Latrobe Health Advocate Jane Anderson.

Ms Anderson consulted with various stakeholders in the community to identify the systemic issues in relation to the lack of doctors in the Valley.

The advocate, who was appointed by the state health minister in 2018, released an action plan report last Thursday enumerating steps towards addressing the GP crisis.

Ms Anderson said she had come to realise through her research and engagement with health stakeholders and the local community that the problem was not a shortage of GPs, but a “maldistribution� of doctors. “There are GPs that are graduating and practicing in Victoria but they aren’t working in regional Victoria,� she told The Express. “It is about having GPs located in areas that require more (doctors).�

Ms Anderson said the impact of this misallocation of general practitioners was “greater in Latrobe,� but was also apparent in some other regional communities.

In her Improving Access to

Services in Latrobe report, the advocate noted that there is approximately one GP per 1000 residents in the area.

There are 85 GPs and 23 general practices operating across the Latrobe Valley.

Ms Anderson said while the ratio of practicing GPs to the population in the Valley was not significantly different to across Victoria, there was a need to “improve health outcomes� locally and also address doctors’ accessibility and reduce the high turnover of practitioners.

She said she was pleased when Latrobe was recently recategorised as a Distribution Priority Area for doctors, however there was a great need to promote the area as an attractive place for doctors to live and work.

In her report, Ms Anderson identified four steps to address the Valley’s GP crisis.

These are improving training and accreditation pathways for doctors, supporting GPs to live and work in the Latrobe Valley, building health and digital literacy and enabling greater responsiveness to community voice, and local system design and innovation that will reduce the burden on emergency departments.

Ms Anderson said market research will be undertaken to identify what GPs are looking for in a place to live and work and also promote the many positive

aspects of the Valley to attract doctors and medicine students.

She said in promoting the Valley it was important that doctors and their families’ cultural, social, educational and spiritual needs were met to encourage them to stay.

Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said the report would enable the state and federal governments to come up with ways to boost access to GPs in regional communities. “We know strong, robust GP and primary healthcare is critical to the long term health of our regional communities. I thank the advocate for this important work, which will help inform our ongoing work with the federal government to boost access to GPs and primary healthcare in the regions,� she said.

Gippsland Primary Health Network chief executive officer Amanda Proposch said the action plan was a result of collaborative work that was initiated by the health advocate. “Gippsland PHN has welcomed the opportunity to work with the Latrobe Health Advocate and other key stakeholders on this important initiative.

Gippsland PHN acknowledges we are all interconnected and interdependent and that people and community are key partners in care delivery,� she said.

Latrobe City blazes a trail Healthy community

PEDDLERS, ponies and pedestrians can look forward to a network of trails connecting the region to get more people out and about.

Latrobe City Council has approved an Inter-Township Trail Network Plan that outlines a series of tracks connecting to major townships and regional trails.

Council will be able to present these designs to apply for state government grants as funding opportunities

arise for these trails to be completed incrementally.

Councillor Graeme Middlemiss described the designs as a “spine” of networks to be completed in “smaller bites”, taken to each council budget.

Cr Middlemiss said he hoped the first priority would be a planned rail trail from Boolarra to Yinnar.

This would be followed by an internal Traralgon track to connect with a soon to be opened Morwell to Traralgon trail and would get cyclists off main streets.

The next phases would be to complete

paths from Morwell to Yallourn North and Yallourn and then from Yinnar to Churchill and Morwell - each phase pending government funding.

“This proposal has the potential to become a major liveability, lifestyle and fitness asset in our community and also an attraction for similar-minded people from all over Victoria,” Cr Middlemiss said.

“One of the best advantages of this proposal is you can start at Moe and ride to Stratford, put your bike on the train and come back again.”

Cr Middlemiss said he hoped the major power companies could also jump on board with funding some paths that could weave around lease land as power stations retired.

Cr Darrell White backed the plan, stating it would help strengthen family relationships and healthy lifestyles.

“I’m reminded of the bike paths from Myrtleford to Bright and into Wangaratta, it’s a huge asset to that part of the world, why can’t we have the same here?” Cr White said.

Mullet is somewhere over the rainbow

EIGHTEEN days ago Traralgonbased Kieran Jackiw went to the hairdresser for his first mullet to raise money for the Black Dog Institute’s Mullets for Mental Health.

In under two weeks the 33-year-old hit his fundraising goal of $1000 and, as promised, dyed his mullet rainbow on R U OK? Day. Mr Jackiw was shocked that he managed to raise close to $2000 in 10 days for the not-for-profit facility for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental health disorders.

With about two weeks still left in September, he increased his goal to $5000 and said “even if I don’t get that at least I have raised a lot for a great resource”.

“I tend to be pretty loud and stand out and I wanted to do something that was a bit fun so that even if the hair just makes someone smile, that is great,” Mr Jackiw said.

“I wanted to put a spin on it that was a bit fun, that people could really get behind ... I am happy to be the one with the weird hair that starts the conversation with people around mental health.

“Even if just one person has a laugh at it on the street and for a few minutes is not thinking about

coronavirus... or see the fundraiser and decide to have a look at resources on the Black Dog Institute’s website that would be great.

“The statistics that really stood out to me were that of the one in five people who have mental illness, 60 per cent will not seek out help.

“People either don’t know where to go or how to get help and there is also a stigma around pride and asking for help ... it’s not like a broken leg that everyone can see you just carry it with you.”

Mr Jackiw said he hadn’t had his hair dyed since he was 18 years old, so was a little bit nervous sitting in the chair.

“My wife said she doesn’t mind what the colour will look like, I am actually a bit more worried about my three-year-old son ... he is a pretty strong, independent kid, he will tell me if he doesn’t like it,” he said.

“I had no idea what it was going to look like, but either way it is an ice breaker and that’s all that really

YOUNG citizens in Latrobe City are helping to keep the community healthier.

Members of Latrobe City Youth Council have been taking part in the Good Food for Mental Health Project, in conjunction with Food For All Latrobe Valley.

Community workshops found that poor mental health was a barrier to some people consuming a healthy diet and also a potential consequence of eating an unhealthy diet.

According to the Food and Mind Centre, higher quality diets are linked to reduced risk of experiencing depression, while unhealthy diets, such as those high in processed foods, are tied to increased depression and anxiety.

Seventeen per cent of Latrobe City residents experience high or very high psychological distress, which is greater than for the rest of Gippsland and Victoria.

More than half of Latrobe residents do not eat the recommended amount of fruit or vegetables, the Department of Health and Human Services found.

In response to this, the Good Food for Mental Health project was identified to improve health and wellbeing outcomes for the Latrobe City population.

As part of that, the Latrobe City Youth Council members have started drafting an imaginative and engaging advertising campaign to encourage community members to think about making healthier choices when selecting the foods they eat.

This campaign will educate the community and promote the benefits of eating healthy food, and the links healthy eating has to improving moods.

“We want to make a difference to the health and wellbeing of the Latrobe City community, particularly to younger people like ourselves who are now forming good habits for life,” Latrobe City Youth Council Mayor Natasha Murcott said.

Youth Council members receive an introduction to local government and Australia’s three levels of government.

Recently, they have participated in Council Meetings, online question and answer sessions with councillors and the executive team, and have held their own meetings.

“The Council values the Youth Council’s input.We have regular meetings with them online and observe their council meetings so that we are informed and engaged in the decisions made within our community,” Natasha said.

The man said he had made “six or seven” phone calls to First National Real Estate Narracan about the state of the burnt out flat with safety concerns.

But First National Real Estate Narracan director Rebecca Robinson said the agency had not been approached by any residents with safety concerns.

Ms Robinson said the burnt out unit - because it is not habitable - is being self-managed by the owner of the building.

“We are not in charge of the unit, it is self-managed by the landlord until such time as it is habitable,” she said.

“I’ve not been made aware of any safety concerns. The residents are more than welcome to speak to the office about those concerns but none of them have.

Two-car collision near Mid Valley TRAFFIC was flowing smoothly an hour after a two-car collision on Princes Drive at 3.10pm last Thursday.

The driver of a white Hyundai was taken to hospital for observation and no one else was injured.

First Constable Chloe Morris from Morwell Police Station said the woman taken to hospital was “understandably very sore”.

“The victim’s vehicle, which is the white vehicle, was travelling west (on Princes Drive) and the (allegedly) offending vehicle has failed to give way and has gone right across the intersection,” Cons Morris told The Express.

“This (allegedly) offending vehicle has just pulled out right in front of the other vehicle.”

THE driver of a milk tanker that crashed into the Shell Coles Express petrol station in Traralgon just after midnight last Friday has no memory of the accident.

The man, aged in his 60s, allegedly failed to brake at the intersection of Breed Street and the Princes Highway, travelled over a centre median strip, collected traffic lights before entering the westbound lane of the highway and into the exit lane of the service station.

Can you change the life of a child?

As a couple who keep opening their home to some of Gippsland’s most vulnerable young people, Rosemarie and David Foulkes have a simple message for would-be foster carers: you are not alone, you are part of a team.

While their own children were growing up, the couple always had people in and out of the house, whether it be friends of their son or daughter or students on exchange. “Informally it feels like we’ve been fostering for years! Dave has worked in a secondary school and I’m a nurse and a teacher’s aide, so we’ve always had young people in our lives at work and at home,�

Rosemarie said.

Rosemarie and David began seriously considering foster care after their children left home and moved to Melbourne.

The conversation was sparked by watching a program about teenagers who were struggling to find stable foster care placements. “We were empty nesters and felt we could do something to help - these young kids needed a loving and nurturing home and

that’s something we could offer,�

Rosemarie said.

With so much experience working with young people throughout their careers, Rosemarie and David opted to foster older children: where there is the greatest need for carers.

The couple have since gone on to complete Circle training, which prepares them to foster children who have experienced trauma and have the most complex needs or behaviours. “I received some advice from a friend of ours that fosters as well.

She told me foster carers are like ‘safe stepping stones’ for these kids - for a brief period of their lives we are able to keep them safe, supported and nurtured, until they are able to take their next step,�

Rosemarie said. “I believe foster carers need

to have patience, because there are difficult and challenging times - but the same is true of our own children! The progress and development you see in the kids while they’re with you makes up for the hard times.�

For would-be foster carers, Rosemarie reiterates that it’s a team effort and foster families are well supported. “I encourage anyone thinking about foster care to make an enquiry with a local agency or go to an information session. We’ve been foster caring with Anglicare Victoria for three years and have been really pleased with all the help and support that’s offered,�

Rosemarie said. “We’ve found the training days extremely practical and helpful. You’re also introduced to a network of carers in your area, and it’s great to be able to share your experiences and advice - we wouldn’t be able to keep caring without the support we receive.�

the Out-of-Home Care industry for more than 30 years.

She said that the most important thing potential foster carers need to know is they’re not alone in the journey. “All our foster carers at Anglicare Victoria have access to a 24-hour support line and a dedicated case manager. We encourage carers to feel comfortable talking with their case managers because they’ll do whatever they can to help you with your foster care placement,�

If you can provide a safe and healthy environment where children can have positive experiences and feel they are supported unconditionally, you have what it takes to become a carer. “It hasn’t been an easy year, and it’s been particularly tough for us Gippslanders. Upgrades will benefit local TAFE

TAFE Gippsland will receive more than $4.3 million to modernise and upgrade learning spaces and facilities at its Warragul and Morwell campuses as part of a funding package announced by the state government yesterday.

Minister for Training and Skills and Higher Education Gayle Tierney announced every TAFE in Victoria would share in $55 million to carry out essential upgrades to learning facilities and amenities, as well as to re-fit and modernise existing learning spaces to adapt them to deliver more courses.

“These projects will deliver better facilities for students and staff, and support jobs and local businesses through the pandemic,” Ms Tierney said.

“We’ve rebuilt TAFE and investing to make it even better, because giving Victorians the skills and training they need will be critical to our economic recovery.”

A massive 965 square metres of space will be transformed into flexible fit-for-purpose facilities at TAFE Gippsland’s Warragul campus as part of a $2.9 million upgrade.

A further $1.4 million will be invested for building and carpark works at TAFE Gippsland’s Morwell Campus.

The works will refurbish classrooms, upgrade carparking and improve staff and student amenity and access to the Koori and Horticulture buildings.

“This investment will ensure that TAFE students in Warragul and Morwell continue to receive the very best in training to get them job ready and into paid work,” Labor Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said.

All Victorian TAFEs will share in the funding through the TAFE Asset Maintenance Fund, with projects to be delivered in Geelong, Gippsland, Mildura, Warrnambool, Shepparton, Seymour and metropolitan Melbourne.

This investment is on top of an additional $48.8 million available for asset maintenance through the Stronger TAFE fund.

The $55 million investment announced is part of the $1.81 billion announced by the state government for critical education infrastructure projects for schools and early childhood to help drive the state’s economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

An extra 18,000 Victorians will be able to train at TAFEs and Learn Locals under a $163 million package of new measures, which includes an expansion of the state government’s Free TAFE program to prepare the state’s economic recovery from the coronavirus crisis.

A YINNAR South woman who founded an award-winning charity for battling Gippsland farmers is having a tilt at local council.

Melissa Ferguson has nominated herself as a candidate for Latrobe City Council’s South Ward, held by incumbent Darrell White.

The former Gippsland Farmer Relief chief executive officer said she felt the time was right to run for council after her years of community advocacy.

“I enjoy advocating for people and their rights to be heard so they can get a fair say. I want to represent them, and I can do this by listening and taking on their concerns,” she said.

“I’d speak on behalf of the constituents of the area, I’d be there for the people and not just for myself.”

Ms Ferguson left Gippsland Farmer Relief earlier this year after helping

to organise a mammoth bushfire relief campaign. She formed the charity four years ago during the farm gate milk price crisis, and went on to win a Premier’s volunteer impact award.

She is now chief executive officer of mental health organisation Barrier Breakers, where she works and volunteers.

Ms Ferguson moved Yinnar South’s rolling hills about 20 years ago from the outer-western suburbs of Melbourne to escape the encroaching urban sprawl.

She said it was time for a “changing of the guard” on council as she aims to provide more diversity and a new voice at Latrobe City.

Ms Ferguson said some residents had raised local issues with her, such as the proposed Delburn wind farm.

She promised she would roll out a series of issues as the campaign progressed towards the October postal vote.

Langley announces council candidacy

MORE Latrobe City Council candidates have come out of the woodwork to run for next month’s local government elections.

Lifelong Traralgon resident and local sporting club volunteer Jannette Langley is aiming for a spot on East Ward.

Ms Langley had put plans to run for council on the back-burner for a few years to go travelling, but the retired Centrelink employee said she “saw some needs to be addressed on council”.

She told The Express attracting small businesses and promoting more tourism to the area were key priorities for the region.

“We need to look at attracting small industries to the area for the long-term, this would then have a snowball effect, as each small business would then attract others and create more jobs,” she said.

“The other thing is tourism, I think we can do better here, especially for

retirees, how can we attract them?

We have such nice places such as national parks and rail trails and small businesses.”

Ms Langley has lived in the Valley her whole life and been heavily involved in local sporting club committees.

She was Traralgon Football Netball Club secretary and manager, former Traralgon Heights scout leader, Cumberland Park junior footy club treasurer and Under-10 coach, Loy Yang tennis club junior committee president and Traralgon Recreation Reserve committee member.

“I’ve written up grants so I have the experience of being able to go out and talk to business and sell the Valley.

I can bring to council the ability to go out and make the Valley more attractive,” she said.

“I’m not backwards in coming forwards, If I see someone looking to do something then I can say what we can sell them.”

Providing support to young Gippslanders IT’S no secret that 2020 has been a tough year for people in Gippsland.

Drought, bushfires and the coronavirus have impacted many lives, including teenagers and those in their early twenties.

That’s why the federal government is now offering grants between $5000 and $20,000 to support young Australians through this difficult period.

Local MP Darren Chester said the Youth Action Project Grant Scheme (YASGS) was designed to help those aged between 15 and 24 years.

“Young Gippslanders are dealing with a range of major issues including remote learning, social isolation and job losses.

There are some who have been dealing with the impact of the bushfires since last year,” Mr Chester said.

“This grant scheme will fund projects that tackle social challenges, with a focus on employment, mental health and transportation and the impacts of the coronavirus and the fires.”

The grants are available to individuals and organisations.

Eligible projects must be:

■ New initiatives that acknowledge and respond to hardship young people are facing and will continue to into the future, or ■ Existing initiatives that provide a valuable service to young people, but require additional funding to continue.

Mr Chester said grant funding could be used to meet project expenses such as staffing costs, equipment purchases, consumables and marketing.

“Now, more than ever, we need to stick together, stay in touch and support each

other however we can,” Mr Chester said.

“It’s important we support our young people throughout this challenging time and have initiatives and programs in place to help them into the future.”

Successful grant recipients are expected to deliver their projects this financial year.

The Foundation for Young Australians (FYA) will administer the scheme.

Wastewater testing project GIPPSLAND Water is taking part in a ground-breaking national project using wastewater sampling to detect and help slow the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

Managing director Sarah Cumming said the organisation was pleased to be playing an important role in helping to keep Victorian communities safe.

“While the project is in its early stages, testing wastewater may provide an early warning as to where the virus might be present in the community,” Ms Cumming said.

“Ultimately, this may help inform policy makers and health authorities to slow the spread.

“We’re taking weekly samples at our Moe and Warragul wastewater treatment plants, and at the Gippsland Water Factory.

“Samples are then sent to the laboratory to be analysed for the virus and that data is used to inform the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services in its efforts to control the virus.”

The Australia-wide ColoSSos Project

- Collaboration on Sewage Surveillance of SARS-COV-2 - will track and monitor the presence of the virus that causes COVID-19 and its persistence in the Australian sewerage network, providing information on where it is present in the population.

The national project has 12 utility partners, six health department and ten research organisations involved.

The program of work is coordinated by Water Research Australia (WaterRA).

They said environmentalists no longer accept the FSC Controlled Wood standard, and urged the company’s owner, Nippon Paper Group, to only use wood with full FSC certification.

VicForests, which is already certified

by PEFC, the world’s largest certification scheme, is being assessed for FSC Controlled Wood certification, which is regarded as a ‘half-way house’ towards full FSC certification.

AFPA chief executive officer Ross Hampton said before the AGM that the investigation of the directors was urgent as there were companies with FSC Controlled Wood certificates in Australia.

“All ... will no doubt now feel uncertain as to the ongoing legitimacy of those certificates in the eyes of the FSC ANZ (Australia New Zealand) board,” he said.

VicForests chief executive officer Monique Dawson said that FSC’s primary focus was applying its

standards to native or natural forest timber harvesting. These standards were environmentally responsible, socially beneficial and economically viable forest management.

“It is therefore unacceptable that directors of FSC Australia are leading public activism and advocacy calling for the complete cessation of native forestry,” she said in her letter to International FSC Director General, Kim Carstensen.

They were actively aiming also to discredit VicForests, a government agency, and the Victorian government regulatory system.

Ms Dawson said Ms Rees, Mr Cooper and Dr Taylor had repeatedly attacked native forest harvesting, while Ms Rees also encouraged illegal protests in harvesting coupes, risking the lives of timber workers.

Her group, My Environment, also owed VicForests $1.3 million.

Ms Dawson said in her letter that VicForests did not object to FSC Australian board members taking part in the democratic process concerning Victorian forest policy.

However, the board members’ persistent and inappropriate activism constituted a real conflict of interest that compromises FSC Australia’s ability to carry out its duties independently and to maintain credibility as a timber harvesting accreditation body.

FSC Australia is under pressure over governance issues, with FSC headquarters in Germany believed to have threatened to deregister the Australian branch or appoint an administrator if the local certification body does not get its act together.

The warning came at last month’s FSC Australia annual general meeting.

It is believed FSC Australia must show by mid-September that its governance is in order.

One indicator of poor governance is staff turnover; FSC Australia has had six chief executives in the past 10 years.

FSC Australia chief executive officer Damian Paull declined to comment on the outcome of the AGM. The Australian Forest Products Association (AFPA), which belongs to the local FSC economics chamber, brought a critical motion to the AGM, but also declined to comment.

FOREST Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) has begun the spring planned burning program in Gippsland.

Last summer’s devastating bushfires had a significant impact across East Gippsland and it’s important that FFMVic continues to look forward to progressing further works to protect our communities and the environment across the region.

“Planned burning is a vital part of the work that FFMVic and our partner agency CFA do to reduce the size, intensity and impact of bushfires on our communities and the environment,” Deputy Chief Fire Officer Dr Beth Roberts said: “Without planned burning and other fuel management work like clearing, mowing and slashing, bushfires will be bigger and harder for our firefighters to control, so we’re taking every opportunity to burn while conditions allow, and it’s safe to do so.

“The periods of cooler weather in spring and autumn are the most suitable and safest for us to carry out our planned burning operations - they can only go ahead when the weather conditions are just right.

“The spring program is generally smaller than in autumn as the weather can be more variable and we focus on smaller, strategic community protection burns in spring.

“When conditions are suitable for burning, communities may see and smell smoke, and some roads and forest areas may have to be closed for public safety while burns are being undertaken.

“We understand that smoke from planned burns can cause health concerns, so we’re monitoring smoke levels across the state. Detailed information about current air quality in your area can be found through Environment Protection Authority Victoria’s AirWatch, an air quality map with data from EPA’s air monitoring stations around Victoria.

“We aim to reduce the impact of smoke on communities from planned burning and continue to invest in new technologies and systems to help us better understand the dispersion of smoke.”

THE Gippsland Regional Partnership is encouraging experienced and emerging leaders of all ages and backgrounds to apply for a position to help shape their local community.

Applications are now open for the next group of local leaders to fill roles within the Gippsland Regional Partnership, with the inaugural group’s four-year term about to come to an end.

The state government established the nine Regional Partnerships in 2016 in recognition that local communities are best placed to understand their region’s challenges and opportunities.

The role of the partnership is to ensure their communities have a greater say about what matters to them and that their voices are heard by the state government.

As a result of advocacy from the Gippsland Regional Partnership, the state government has invested in projects that matter to locals, from new tourism opportunities, to early learning programs and better services for young people.

“It has been an incredibly rewarding four years as Chair of the Gippsland Regional Partnership and over this time, we have seen real change across Gippsland that we have championed for,” Outgoing Gippsland chair Maree McPherson said.

“I encourage locals from all ages and from across the diverse community and business sectors to put their hand up for a position.

“It’s a unique opportunity to make a meaningful and effective difference

for our communities and to take a leadership role that will help to shape our region.”

During the past four years, the state government has invested in a range of initiatives championed by the Partnership.

Other initiatives relate to the development of a Destination Management Plan for Gippsland tourism and boosting digital connectivity through the development of the region’s first Digital Plan.

The new group of Partnership members will be guided by the region’s Outcomes Roadmap - a living document

that summarises the outcomes each Partnership is striving to achieve.

All nine Partnerships recently held a Regional Roundtable with community, business and government leaders to explore local impacts of the coronavirus pandemic and to help support the state government as it plans for recovery.

The Partnership is encouraging people from diverse backgrounds to apply.

The term of appointment for new members will run until December 31, 2024.

Honouring key figures of the past

The idea was sparked when she was approached by a local who feared that the Ted

Summerton Reserve in Moe was going to be stripped of its name to build a Cricket Centre

of Excellence - which was not the case.

“Who are these people? We don’t know our history, these are the people who served our community so well and we don’t want to lose that, and we need to honour them,” Cr Gibson said.

“This should be more than a name on a pavilion, some may know one or two of these people, but we don’t know them all. We need to know our history.”

Cr Gibson suggested working with local historical societies to put up a plaque or even including online explainers in digital maps to let people know the

significance behind the names.

The suggestion was backed by the Edward Hunter Reserve management committee, which put up a board at the Moe bushland reserve outlining the feats of the former Narracan Shire councillor.

Reserve chair Bruce King said he was doubtful that park users would know who Edward Hunter was unless they read the board.

“Edward Hunter was a tireless councillor, his funeral was the biggest in Moe when he died in 1942 as he had done so much for the community,” Mr King said.

SEPTEMBER 10 marked the annual R U OK? Day campaign, reminding Australians to check in with friends and family who may be struggling.

Moe’s Turn Back Time Cafe started the conversation in its community, handing out gifts to customers to keep or give to someone they know.

The George Street business gifted KitKats and coffee vouchers to their customers and will also deliver free meals to locals who are having a hard time.

Turn Back Time Cafe owner Sue Broadbent said the gifts were a great way to break the ice and share a little pick-me-up.

Ms Broadbent also delivered morning tea to employees at a couple of local businesses to let them know she “was thinking of them”.

“I love this area and the people here are the ones who will always do something to help you out, if you ask they will do it,” she said.

“Times are hard, we are lucky we can still have our door open, we are OK so we wanted to make sure that someone else is.”

Local MP Darren Chester said there had been extensive work along Commercial Road and Tarwin Street over the past few months to create a more pedestrian-friendly central business area.

“The completion of another two parklets gives pedestrians additional places to sit and greenery to enjoy.

The federal government committed $1.75 million as part of the Regional Jobs and Investment Packages program.

VISITORS at the iconic Morwell Centenary Rose Garden will still be able to enjoy the thousands of roses that are now in full bloom despite COVID-19 restrictions, thanks to the tireless volunteers who worked at the garden in between lockdowns.

It was “perfect timing� according to Morwell Rose Garden Committee president Del Matthews that enabled volunteers to come down to the site to prune roses in time for spring.

Ms Matthews said pruning works were done in between the first and second Stage 3 restrictions which allowed volunteers just enough time to complete the majority of the garden.

The internationally-known garden has about 400 varieties and a total of 4000 roses. “We got the pruning done in between the first and second lockdowns and worked there every Monday and Tuesday,� Ms Matthews told The Express. “We haven’t got to the climbers but we got most of the garden pruned.�

Ms Matthews said there were about 50 volunteers of the garden, however not everyone was able to participate in pruning activities because of COVID-19 restrictions.

She said pruning the thousands of roses at the garden used to be a fun social activity for green thumbs before the restrictions as volunteers

shared a meal and even went out for dinner on weekends.

Ms Matthews said roses were pruned during winter when they were dormant to enable them to produce new blooms. “If it’s your own garden it’s no drama if you’re unable to prune.

Roses are tough, they will survive,� she said. “But ours is a display garden so it’s important to cut it out so that it’ll look good.�

Ms Matthews said less than 20 volunteers worked at the garden across six weeks in between lockdowns and followed social distancing each time. “It was really lovely work and we got it done,� she said.

MONASH School of Rural Health students in Gippsland came together, virtually, to compete in the All Gippsland Championship Quiz last week.

The Zoom trivia night was organised by the faculty to check in on students for R U OK? Day. Monash University Medical Students’ Society representative for year 4C Calvin Lu said the event made students feel very supported by the Gippsland team.

Mr Lu is currently completing a hospital-based semester in Traralgon after working in Leongatha and has not been home to Melbourne since mid-June.

“My role in short is to be a liaison between the students and faculty members, the organisation has been pretty limited at the moment because we usually run social events ... which has obviously been hard at the moment,” he said.

“The UMSS had organised coffee vouchers for students for R U OK? Day and the Gippsland faculty told me they had also organised something so we also gave some money to send snack as a pick-me-up to the students.

“The fact that the faculty went out of their way to organise something really fun for the students was so nice and just made us all feel really supported.

“During the first wave, they organised Zoom Q and As and have been very transparent, they are also giving weekly updates and it’s gone a long way to give us that feeling of certainty, when everything feels very uncertain.”

Mr Lu said connecting in any way possible with students during coronavirus is important because of the strain restrictions have had on them.

“It’s very easy within the university year to get lost in the stress of it all ... the fourth year is the most difficult of our course because it counts toward where we go when we graduate and everyone has been a bit more on edge dealing with new resources online and missed placements,” he said.

Monash Rural Health Gippsland director, Associate Professor Catherine Haigh said before the quiz students heard presentations from the Victorian Doctors Health Program and Monash University Professional Support’s Dr Philippa Corby and Associate Professor Lyn Clearihan.

“We had a Zoom meeting and talked to them about the importance of looking after themselves and checking in with one another before the quiz, which was a bit of fun and a way for students to connect with one another,” she said.

“It’s important for our students because it’s a very intense course, they are exposed to all sorts of human vulnerabilities and this COVID year has been a very uncertain year and they have been really cut off from one another.”

Associate Prof Haigh said she received help from Churchillbased doctor Marg Simmons and the pair had a lot of fun putting the event together.

“Using Zoom will be great because no one will miss out or have to travel, there were five rounds of eight questions (and) fun prizes ... things like a built your own robot hoover and a fluffy cow because we are in Gippsland,” she said.

“All of the prizes were sourced locally and some sections of the quiz were about Gippsland, so those who have really connected with the local area will have an advantage.”

Registered burnoffs boom as fire season looms

CFA has praised Victorians for registering their burn-offs as thousands more have taken the opportunity to clean up their properties this winter compared to last year.

Six thousand more burn-offs were registered with ESTA between the start of May and the end of August, fresh data shows.

CFA Acting Chief Officer Garry Cook said it was great news to see so many Victorians doing the right thing.

“Registering your burn-off is important as it means CFA volunteer firefighters are not called out unnecessarily when someone reports smoke, as any reports are cross-referenced with ESTA’s register,” he said.

“We’re not sure if there are more burn-offs, or simply more people doing the right thing but with almost 57,000 registered through winter compared to almost 51,000 last year think it’s a combination of both.

“More people are spending more time at home at the moment and if that means they are choosing to spend more time to clean up their properties before the bushfire season, that’s a good thing.”

Acting Chief Officer Cook said welcome rain in many parts of Victoria over the winter months meant a slight delay to the start of the fire season compared to recent years.

However, the fire danger period is fast approaching across Victoria, after which the window to conduct burn-offs without a permit closes.

“The best way to defend your homes is to prepare before the fire danger period begins. This includes cleaning up your gardens, your gutters and removing flammable waste from your yards,” Acting Chief Officer Cook said.

“Many property owners dispose of this waste with

a burn-off, but we also recommend people consider alternative methods such as mulching, chipping or taking green waste to a transfer station.”

The recent Australian seasonal bushfire outlook identified recent rains have led to a reduced risk of prolonged fire activity throughout spring, although shorter duration fires in grasslands, drier forests and woodlands are still likely to occur across the state.

Mr Cook reminded Victorians that even an average fire season in the state can be a bad one.

By registering burn-offs, any reports of smoke or fire will be cross-checked with the burn-off register to avoid unnecessary response of fire services.

Landowners can register their burn-off with the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) by calling 1800 668 511 or emailing burnoffs@esta.vic.gov.au.

Uniting can offer a helping hand

UNITING Vic/Tas is encouraging anyone struggling with the basics such as putting food on the table - to give them a call.

Uniting Vic/Tas in Gippsland executive officer Di Fisher said the organisation can assist with providing food and other necessities.

“We are able to provide grocery items and other essentials to those who - for whatever reason - are having difficulty accessing the food and supplies that they need. We can also provide links to other services,” Ms Fisher said.

“It is a really uncertain time for many individuals and families at the moment. We know there are many people out there who have not had to ask for help and might be unsure how or who to ask.

“We want those people - and anyone who needs help - to know they can contact us for confidential support.

Uniting provides community services residents right across Gippsland, including emergency relief from offices at Sale, Bairnsdale and Leongatha.

THE ‘Edward Hunter Heritage Bush Reserve’ committee of management has extended the closing date of its photography and artwork competition for youth to Monday, October 19.

Stage 3 restrictions have made it difficult for students to submit artwork entries via their schools and for a committee member to visit the Moe/ Newborough schools to collect their work.

Moving the competition closing date should allow students time, once restrictions ease, to submit their artwork.

The competition is open to primary and secondary school students who may enter either a photograph of nature taken within the reserve or an artwork inspired by nature within the reserve.

Artwork may be submitted at the student’s school for youth who attend school in Moe or Newborough.

Musculoskeletal survey

MUSCULOSKELETAL Australia (MSK) will conduct the largest and most comprehensive consumer-driven survey in Australia of people living with musculoskeletal conditions, or those caring for someone with a condition, to determine how their care can be improved.

Following a pilot survey by MSK in July, responses showed that people living with musculoskeletal conditions were impacted in a variety of ways and needed help and support to better manage their conditions and have a better quality of life.

These preliminary results show that all respondents said affordable treatment options and services (e.g. physiotherapy, exercise classes, medication) would better help them manage their conditions while three quarters backed this up by saying more government support, specifically for the ongoing costs of treatment (eg medication or extended chronic care plans), would also help them manage their condition.

While half of the pilot survey respondents were of working age (aged 25-64), only 39% of respondents were actually working (43% were retired, 9% unable to work and 5% studying).

A large number of pilot survey respondents were unable to work because of their condition and have had to either retire early, stop working, change to part-time work or seen their

career plans affected by their condition.

With so many unable to work and earn as they would like, it is no surprise that those living with musculoskeletal conditions also feel a substantial amount of financial strain, with participants stating that they felt financial stress as a result of the cost of allied health appointments, private health insurance, specialist appointments and medications.

And to compound matters, three quarters of pilot survey participants were also living with another condition such as high blood pressure, heart disease, a mental health issue or gastrointestinal disease.

More than 70 per cent of pilot survey participants said that their day-to-day physical activity, like walking or climbing stairs, is affected.

Other life impacts include a decrease in social activities, with 66 per cent of pilot survey participants stating their social life has been affected.

“The prevalence of musculoskeletal conditions in Australia is becoming exceedingly high and can have a profound impact on people’s lives, including their mental wellbeing and socioeconomic circumstances,” Musculoskeletal chief executive officer Rob Anderson said.

“MSK is committed to representing the needs and perspectives of people living with these conditions and wants to achieve the best outcomes for them.

“Our national consumer survey is the first step to providing us with a broader understanding of their experiences, needs and how to best support them.”

The second largest contributor to disability worldwide and the most common cause for early retirement, there are more than 150 musculoskeletal conditions which include common conditions such as osteoarthritis, back pain, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, osteoporosis and fibromyalgia.

MSK aims to deliver the most comprehensive audit of what it is like to live with a musculoskeletal condition in Australia with this survey, as there is inadequate prioritisation of musculoskeletal health and persistent pain in the current health system.

Sandra’s sensational running career ATHLETICS

SANDRA Timmer-Arends achieved her first Traralgon Marathon victory in 1997 and another on the eve of the millennium in 1999.

After a few years she returned in 2004 to push Penny Burgess into silver medal place, the second year straight for Penny, who was also runner up the previous year to Jodi Healey.

Soon after Sandra reached the pinnacle only two others, Morgan Tucker and Mary Edwards, had achieved at the Traralgon Marathon - and then surpassed it.

A talented runner in middledistance school events, Sandra joined the Traralgon Harriers in the early 1990s, no doubt inspired by the achievements of Alan Timmer-Arends and his brother Jim, both Harrier and triathlon stalwarts.

Sandra said she started out with the Harriers’ 5km races, running to get fit and lose weight.

One of her first long club runs was the 1994 Queen of the Mountain run, a 30km climb up the main roads to the summit of Mount Tassie that now follows back roads and logging tracks. Sandra won her maiden run, set a still standing race record the next year and achieved the three-peat in 1996.

Winning again in 2000, after time off and the birth of her daughter Narelle, she returned to win another five straight from 2003 to 2007.

In 2004, Sandra returned to earn her third Traralgon Marathon victory, while her fellow Australian 100km teammate Mike Wheatley took the men’s title.

Sandra was outright eleventh, six seconds over the three-hour mark - no doubt still a little leg-weary from her 100km race a couple of weeks earlier.

She and Mike had represented Australia in the international 100km championships in France.

In 2005, Jodi Healey ran fifteen minutes faster than her previous quickest marathon time to finish eleven minutes ahead of Sandra in second place.

Healey’s coach was Bendigo-based elite Ironman triathlete David Meade who won the men’s event.

With three Traralgon wins each Jodi and Sandra were closing in on Mary Edwards’ total of four.

Sandra bounced back in 2006 for her fourth title, with former junior Harrier Tim Cochrane the male winner.

Her first marathon

IN a sign of what was to come, back in 1995 under Harriers’ coach Laurie Edmondstone she tackled her first state-wide event, placing seventh in her maiden Melbourne Marathon in a sub-3 hour finish.

Later that year she won theVictorian Half Marathon Championship and in an exciting finish narrowly defeated an elite field of runners, edging out previous winner Sue Michelsson by a sliver of seconds.

The following year Sandra ran her first ultra race - any event further than the 42.195km marathon distance.

Alongside her Harrier clubmate Ian Cornthwaite she won the 1996 Victorian 50km track championship conducted by the Harriers on the Joe Carmody athletics track at Newborough. She and Ian both returned to win again the next year, in 1997, and both set national records. And after her family break Sandra returned to reclaim the 50km track championship, winning again in 2006 and 2007.

Back in 1997 in her first Traralgon Marathon, Sandra won the women’s division in the relatively slow time of 3:13.58 - she was reportedly running about 190 kilometres per week and coasted to the line in preparation for the

Gold Coast Marathon in July. The second woman home was previous two-time winner Sydney Shadid who took the veterans title.

Second in Melbourne behind an Olympian

IN 1998, Sandra ran at Melbourne and Canberra, and in 1999 back at Traralgon she won her second title, placing ninth outright only eight minutes behind the men’s winner, Aaron Fuller. At Melbourne in 1999 she placed second behind Susan Hobson who ran an Olympic qualifying time for Sydney 2000.

Sandra has won or finished in single digit placings in a number of marathons around Australia.

An Australian representative

ANOTHER highlight of the year for Sandra in 1999 was to represent Australia at the world 100km road championships at Chavagnes-enPaillers, France, with an unofficial time of 8 hours 19 minutes, after being in third place at the 50km mark. Sandra also represented Australia at the World Cup 100km championships in South Korea in 2006.

Also in 1999, alongside a small number of fellow Harriers, Sandra ran and won the gruelling Mansfield to Mount Buller 50km road race, setting the women’s record, and winning again in 2000 and 2001, in even faster times.

A five-peat in the Walhalla Wound-up

BACK in local territory Sandra tackled her first Walhalla Wound-up 50km run in 2003.

Bruce Salisbury’s creation of an ultra run through the unforgiving hills around Walhalla and surrounds attracted runners from across Australia and from overseas.

Sandra won the Walhalla for five years straight, from 2003 to 2007, setting the course record in 2004.

In 2007, she shared the run with American senior university academic and talented ultra-runner Siri Terjesen.

Siri and Sandra both ran in 100km world championship events, and many Australian marathons and ultra-events, and like Sandra, Siri was a Canberra 50km champion.

At Walhalla they ran together and crossed the line together for equal first place.

The fortieth anniversary marathon

IN June 2007, the Harriers celebrated their fortieth anniversary and the club successfully conducted its fortieth annual Traralgon Marathon - and Sandra and Tim repeated their wins from the previous year.

For Sandra it was a record-breaking fifth time. Extremely gracious and modest about her achievement she said it was an emotional time for her.

Before the race Sandra, Mary Edwards and Morgan Tucker were the only runners to win the Traralgon Marathon four times.

Although her titles were not in sequence as were Mary’s and Morgan’s, Sandra performances were outstanding because of the circumstances of her victories.

Forward another year to 2008.

John Mackenzie won his third Traralgon Marathon while Sandra won her sixth, and third in a row.

Both had to fight hard for their victories with Gabrielle Kopke finishing less than three minutes adrift of Sandra.

Sandra makes it four in a row

IN 2009, just before Roger Federer and Serena Williams won at Wimbledon, Sandra was aiming for her seventh Traralgon Marathon victory, and a run of four in sequence to match the previous streaks by Edwards and Tucker.

She had already won an incredible six times, but the bar had been set very high with the benchmark becoming the number of consecutive wins.

She won by four minutes ahead of her protégé and training partner Jenny Northe, who had to wait one more year for the sweet smell of success.

Sandra had matched the record streak of four, with an unsurpassed total of seven Traralgon marathon victories.

Would this remarkable result ever be equalled - or overtaken?

In 2017, celebrating the Harriers’ 50th anniversary and 50th Traralgon Marathon, the first local woman was young Harrier Kayla Gallert, who had moved up to the Open division and almost broke the four-hour barrier.

And soon after Kayla, the tight-knit team of Sandra, Tania Whitehead, Sally Eenjes and Sheryl Millar all crossed the line together - twenty years after Sandra’s first Traralgon Marathon.

Two of the finest: Sandra and former Harrier Tim Cochrane were both dual Traralgon Marathon winners in 2006 and 2007.

Bright result for venues SPORT

SPORTING clubs across Latrobe City will benefit from upgrades to lighting at four recreation reserves.

The facilities received funding from the state government and Latrobe City Council in response to growing demand for access to modern sporting grounds with adequate lighting.

Council will contribute approximately $116,000 to the project, with the state government contributing a total of $1,046,109 from its Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program.

The projects are: ■ Installation of new 100 lux LED sports field lighting to the football oval at George Bates Reserve in Yallourn North.

■ Installation of new 200 lux LED court lighting to netball courts at Northern Reserve in Newborough.

■ Installation of new 100 lux LED sports field lighting to the football oval at Ronald Reserve in Morwell.

■ Installation of new 100 lux LED sports field lighting at Old Trafford Oval (Traralgon Recreation Reserve) in Traralgon.

The lighting upgrades should be completed by the middle of 2021.

“All of these facilities have seen an increase in participation and users over the last few years. In order to support sporting clubs to provide a valuable service to their growing communities, these upgrades were important,” Latrobe City Mayor Dan Clancey said.

The footballers at Yallourn-Yallourn North Football Netball Club are “super excited” about the lighting improvements, according to secretary Deb Decarli.

For the last two to three seasons they have not been able to see each other once they go on the wings of the ground,” she said.

“There have been times where we’ve had to go to another ground to train because one of the lights would be getting repaired.

“The original lights have been there since the mid 1980s when the ground was given to the club by the SEC and not one of our playing group would have been born then.”

Ms Decarli said the lighting upgrade would enable the club to host night games, which have the potential to draw large crowds and prove to be successful fundraisers for the club.

“We could have a range of different activities at the ground at night,” she said.

TEDAS Junior Football Club president Matt Addison said the new lights at Old Trafford Oval would offer multiple benefits for the club, which boasts 109 players across five age groups, from Under-8 to Under-16.

“We would be able to have multiple teams train at the oval at once, rather than be bunched up where the lighting is best, and we could be able to train later into the evening too,” he said.

“Safety will be improved and we might even be able to attract new players.”

Mr Addison said during a regular season, the oval was used four nights a week, but with better lighting, multiple teams could train simultaneously, making the oval available for potential night games mid-week or on Friday evenings.

That would also free up Sundays for players and their families, when all junior football is played during a typical season.

“The current lights are inadequate for training. They are antiquated.

They are constantly being repaired and they’re just not up to current standards for training,” Mr Addison said.

The projects will benefit the region’s economy during construction and provide facilities capable of hosting interleague training, programs, events and night games.

Council identified the reserves as a priority for improved lighting during council’s current ‘Recreation Needs Assessment’ process.

MOE galloper Levendi made a pleasing return to the races in the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday.

The 2018 ATC Derby champion finished 11th, little more than five lengths away from winner Fierce Impact.

With Jason Maskiell in the saddle, Levendi jumped well from barrier one and after sitting just behind the speed, stuck to the task late in the Group 1 race which was his first raceday assignment since February 22.

“We were thrilled with Levendi today beaten approximately five lengths off one jump out and plenty of improvement to come into the future campaign,” assistant trainer Manny Gelagotis reported post-race.

Levendi holds nominations in each of the three Spring Carnival features - Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup. The son of Pierro was allocated 53.5kg for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups when the weights were released earlier this month.

But the Latrobe Valley-trained ace faces a task to leap up the list of contenders and get a start in the big ones.

Levendi is equal 113th on the order of entry for the Caulfield Cup and equal 93rd on the order of entry for the Melbourne Cup. The stable were also pleased with the effort of Rube Bridges, who finished third at Mornington on Friday in a Fillies & Mares Benchmark 70 Hcp (2000m), while Taikun Warrior finished fourth in a Benchmark 64 Hcp (2000m).

Optus partners with junior Blazers BASKETBALL

OPTUS has joined forces with the Traralgon Amateur Basketball Association’s Under-10 boys’ team, providing the young athletes with spiffy new singlets and merchandise.

Optus Eastern Victoria general manager Jayson Grool said it was fantastic to see the team’s reaction to their new uniform.

“It is a shame that everything has been put on hold at the moment, but we can’t wait to come down and cheer the team on when we can,” Mr Grool said.

“We will also set them up with Optus water bottles and tote bags and have them really kitted out.

“With sport being core to Victorian culture, we are also looking forward to giving back to the local community and making sure we can best support

the passions of these players. We are really passionate about supporting local communities whether its an adults team or kids team regardless of the sport we are incredibly excited to get behind them.”

The Blazers players are just as keen about their new look.

Archie Aitken said he loves having “professional jerseys” and added that having “with a real sponsor, it makes me feel special”.

Elijah Gillow said “I felt happy putting on my jersey and being a part of the team. I can’t wait to play basketball with my friends”.
