REPORT RETORT LATROBE City Council has pointed out a lack of consultation from the Latrobe Valley Authority over an infrastructure report commissioned in 2018 which was not made available to council. Latrobe City has made the statement in a submission into a Parliamentary Inquiry into the Closure of Hazelwood and Yallourn Power Stations.

Part of council’s recommendations called for the state government to immediately begin a consultation process to form a transition plan leading into the closure of Yallourn. This includes removing redundant coal protection overlays in Morwell North West, Maryvale East and Area H to support developing the land for diverse industries.

The submission also outlined concerns about the risk of the energy workforce moving from full-time highly skilled employment to casual work and lower paying short-term jobs. The Inquiry – which was moved by Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath earlier this year - is looking into the economic recovery postHazelwood and the expected impacts

of the closure of Yallourn in 2028. It is also looking into the role of the Latrobe Valley Authority to aid the region’s transition amid declining funding made available in successive State Budgets. Cr Graeme Middlemiss acknowledged that council was treading on “dangerous ground” by pointing out the success and shortcomings of the LVA. Continued on page 3
