On the lookout: Boisdale-Briagolong Football-Netball Club historian Brett Lanigan is seeking information to help compile a book detailing the clubs history. photograph contributed

FOOTBALL

BOISDALE-BRIAGOLONG Football-Netball Club is piecing together the details of its long and proud history in preparation for a significant milestone.

As the Bombers approach the 40th anniversary of the Boisdale and Briagolong clubs forming under one banner in 1982, work is underway on a history book.

Club historian Brett Lanigan said while both clubs dated back to the late 1800s, Briagolong’s standalone team finished in 1951 and records relating to the early years of both clubs were scarce.

“Unfortunately our honour boards in the club rooms only go back to 1975, and there’s no documented history prior to this,” Lanigan said.

“We’ve got some bits and pieces of information, but there’s a lot of gaps and we’re very keen to fill them so we have a comprehensive history.”

Lanigan said he had a personal interest in ensuring the Bombers’ past was recorded, as his grandparents Ray and Mona Brideson and father Kevin Lanigan were life members of the club.

“I’ve been involved in the club my whole life and it’s evolved so much even in my lifetime,” he said.

“I think it’s so important that these historical details and the stories and characters that go along with them are captured now before they’re lost forever.”

Lanigan urged people to come forward with any records or information they might have from any period in the club’s history, including recent years.

“We’re looking for any details for football and netball, club and league award winners, coaches in all grades, committee leadership roles, interleague representatives, yearly scores and ladder positions,” he said.

“We’re also on the hunt for photos, copies of Leader, Tagger or Gameday programs and secretary or minutes books.

“Anything you’ve got, we’re keen to see it.”

Those who can assist should phone Brett Lanigan on 0427 517 577 or email brett@gremaffra.com.au.

Bosidale-Briagolong played in the North Gippsland Football-Netball League between 1983 and 1985 and again from 2004 to 2014.

The Bombers currently compete in the East Gippsland Football-Netball League.

Wildcats stay in top spot

NETBALL

NORTH GIPPSLAND

WOODSIDE maintained top spot thanks to superior percentage after a convincing 68-17 win against Gormandale on Saturday.

The Wildcats had few problems in registering what was a fourth win in five starts.

The success keeps Woodside ahead of nearest rivals Rosedale and Sale City, both of whom won in Round 5.

Rosedale played out an absolute thriller against Heyfield, winning by a solitary goal 32-31.

Star performer Linley Bertacchini was named best for the Blues, who did just enough to ensure they remain unbeaten in 2021.

Despite the defeat, Heyfield should take plenty of confidence they can match it with the competition’s premier side and will look to turn the tables when the powerhouses meet again later in the season.

Sale City shook off a determined Yarram 44-32 to also sit on 16 points.

Churchill moved up to fourth place thanks to an impressive 61-21 defeat of TTU.

Yallourn Yallourn North scored its first win of the season, defeating Cowwarr 50-30.

It was the first success for the Bombers’ netballers since crossing to the North Gippsland competition.

Zaida Glibanovic was named best for YYN, with Adrianne Eerhard another notable contributor in the success.

Glengarry had the bye.

Jiath impresses again

FOOTBALL

By ZAC STANDISH MORWELL’S Changkouth Jiath enjoyed a return to form on Sunday afternoon as his Hawks went down to the West Coast Eagles by 38 points.

Showing off his customary dash off half-back, Jiath took the game on at all opportunities with his line-breaking ability constantly putting his teammates in dangerous positions.

Finishing with an impressive 24 possessions, six marks and 83 per cent disposal efficiency, the 21-year-old was without a doubt a shining star on what was a disappointing day for his team.

Tim Membrey’s Saints made it back-to-back wins on Saturday afternoon, getting over the Gold Coast Suns by nine points in a low scoring affair.

Trailing for the majority of the day, St Kilda would wrestle back the momentum at the beginning of the last quarter and make the most of their opportunities, with the Traralgon local a major catalyst to the fightback.

Finishing with 12 disposals, eight marks and two inside 50’s, Membrey took some telling marks in defence during the final term.

For the Suns, Morwell’s Ben Ainsworth was impressive in a role across high half-forward, with his manic pressure and cleanliness below his knees seeing him have a big impact in the losing effort.

Finishing with 16 disposals, seven marks, two tackles and 10 pressure acts, it is clear that Ainsworth is beginning to find great continuity in his game and an ability to impact the match in more than one way.

Former Moe player Sam Flanders, showcased his continued growth as he partnered Ainsworth nicely in that role across half forward.

He would also be given a bit more of a chance through the midfield and showed great poise in picking up 14 disposals, two marks and four tackles.

In what was his third full game in a row, the signs are positive for Flanders as he continues to build and become a crucial cog in this up and coming Suns team. Speedy: Steve Quirk was the first runner over the line at Grand Ridge Rail Trail

Big wins for TTU, Rosedale

FOOTBALL

NORTH GIPPSLAND By LIAM DURKIN NUMEROUS eyebrows were raised when Round 5 North Gippsland Football-Netball results came through on Saturday night.

TTU and Rosedale toppled the two previously undefeated teams, while the margin of Yarram’s victory took many people by surprise. THE Bombers put a four quarter performance together at Gaskin Park to defeat Churchill 13.9 (87) to 8.13 (61).

A five-goal second term set up the match for TTU, as they were able to keep the Cougars at bay from thereon in.

The win may have been a few weeks in the making, as the Bombers had either drawn or lost their previous three matches by under 10 points.

Zac Kilgower was best on ground for TTU, and received good support from Justin Barnes and Josh Ward.

For Churchill, Allan Chandler came back into the team and kicked two goals, while Jake Roe-Duggan kicked the same amount to be adjudged best for the Cougars.

Michael Diaz and Chris Williams also played well in a losing cause. ROSEDALE had a similarly good four quarter effort against Heyfield.

The Blues got up away from home 14.12 (96) to 11.12 (78).

Fresh from the week off, Rosedale made the most of their opportunities in the first quarter, kicking four goals from five scoring shots. Conversely, the Kangaroos only nailed one goal from six scoring shots.

Rosedale blew the game open after the first break, slamming on five goals to take a 35-point lead as teams went into the sheds.

This margin ended up being around the same mark for the rest of the game, as the Blues ran the game out three goal victors.

In a good sign for Rosedale, Brandon McDonald was not left to do all the goal kicking, as five players returned multiple hauls.

Jake Suter, Luke Stuckey and Hayden Bell were best on ground in the win.

Brad Berry, Brayden Woodland and Kodie Woodland stood out for Heyfield.

As a team that was the talk of pre-season, a win such as this Dukes: Gormandale’s Matt Coutts takes a strong grab.

might kick-start the Blues for the next few weeks. YARRAM absolutely annihilated Sale City.

The Demons made the trip back up the South Gippsland Highway a long one for the Bulldogs after winning 21.8 (134) to 7.4 (46).

While many may have tipped Yarram to win, even the most one-eyed Demon supporter surely would not have seen an 88 point mauling coming.

A seven goal second quarter took the margin out to 66 points at half-time, before Yarram virtually put their players on ice for the rest of the game.

Veteran Griffin Underwood was the standout in the win, and fed the likes of Ben Vardy who finished with five majors.

Sale City was without coach Shane Fyfe, as all he could do was watch on from the sidelines as the horror show unfolded.

After defeating the previously unbeaten Woodside and drawing with Rosedale in recent weeks, the Bulldogs coach will be hoping this performance is an outlier and a case of everyone in red, white and blue just having an extremely bad day.

Better players wereTom Mann, Ben Chivers and Troy Carstairs.

On the other side of the coin, Yarram, who had perhaps been a touch unconvincing to start the season, will have put the rest of the competition on notice with a win of this magnitude. WOODSIDE strolled away in the last quarter to defeat Gormandale.

An eight goal final term undid three quarters of competitiveness from the travelling Tigers, as a 37-point margin bleed out to a dangerous 89 points in the finish.

Gormandale more than held their own for large portions of the game, but once the dam wall opened Woodside capitalised.

Throughout the game the Wildcats were able to scramble a few easy goals from right in front, and as is often the case when that happens, Gormandale’s players became more and more demoralised.

Woodside coach Michael Duncan kicked a number of these type of goals, with some coming from clever soccer kicks.

Duncan showed the importance of keeping your feet and ended up having a day out, kicking 10 goals.

Best on ground honours were given to Josh Scott, Brenton Kuch and Josh Kennedy.

Post-match, Duncan said he was impressed with the performance of the younger brigade.

“Probably the most pleasing thing today is we’ve had a few kids played their best footy,” he said.

“It was our kids who really picked up the energy for us after half-time.”

While happy to bank the four points, Duncan said the run leading into the teams bye was crucial as the season continued to unfold.

“You have to win when you get your opportunity,” he said.

“We lost an opportunity last week (one-point loss to Sale City), we had to get back on the winners list this week.

“To be four and one and with a couple of really tough games coming up before we have a week off we have to get to our sixth or at least fifth win in those next couple of weeks.”

For Gormandale, it was a case of one step forward two steps back.

TheTigers had good passages of play, but were perhaps a little too fired up at times, which resulted in two yellow cards being handed out and Gormandale having to play two men down in the last quarter when the score blew out.

To their credit, the Tigers continued to play attacking football, when the easy thing to do would have been to drop numbers back to protect the margin.

Most watching the game would have agreed Gormandale didn’t deserve to lose by as much as they did.

Tigers captain Josh Pearce took out best on ground. Mitchell Jones and Jarryd Movchan also found plenty of touches, as did John Chessells who featured in the best for the third week in a row.

Chessells battled the game manfully, and played most of the match with his shoulder heavily strapped following a crunching tackle in the first quarter. YALLOURN Yallourn North did as expected against Cowwarr.

The Bombers kicked away after half-time, cruising to a 23.17 (155) to 4.7 (31) win.

Keenan Hughes and Mitchell Luck kicked six goals each for the victors, in what was a nice percentage booster on their home deck.

The two Dylan’s, Bath and Bentley were again in the best for Yallourn Yallourn North.

The Saints didn’t have a lot to smile about on the day, but Jack Casson, Ben Coffey and Sam Moran battled hard.

Mid Gippsland Gippsland FootballFo League Thorpy ends drought

FOOTBALL

MID GIPPSLAND THEY say with every loss you have, you are closer to your next win, and for Thorpdale that elusive win has been coming for a long time now, a very long time.

Hosting Tarwin was another chance to secure victory against a side whose confidence had been shaken in recent weeks after some indifferent form and finally after more than 1000 days the Blues tasted victory, defeating the Sharks 12.11 (83) to 8.18 (66).

A fast start for Thorpdale had the home side in the right frame of mind.

Sometimes believing you can do something is half the battle and with an early 28-point lead the Thorpdale unit started to believe.

“Finally, after 1001 days we have a win! A super effort from all 21 on the weekend, last week really stung the group into action bringing the right attitude, energy and commitment, a great day for the club and our members and supporters,” a delighted Blues coach Ray Pickering said.

It was the sort of day that makes playing the game, even watching the game worthwhile, seeing the genuine happiness in achieving something special by a tight group of players, of mates, it may have been just one victory that by many more successful clubs might go unappreciated, but not for the Blues.

With all that said, there was also a losing team, and Tarwin would have been disappointed that with more scoring shots than their opposition, they couldn’t have made more of their afternoon.

MIRBOO NORTH v FISH

CREEK

THE outcome of this match was always going to give a strong push as to who might be staking their claim for a top of the ladder position.

Both sides unbeaten, both sides with some respectable scalps to their credit, but the task in lining up their respective form to determine a winner prior to the match was a difficult one, only 120 minutes of football between the two could do that, and it did.

Mirboo North winning 11.15 (81) to 10.8 (68).

The Tigers had most of the ball early, but 10 shots on goal only produced two majors in the first 30 minutes, and that inaccuracy didn’t improve before half-time with 3.11 giving the home side just a five-point lead.

Mirboo North coach Josh Taylor paid tribute to his side’s persistence.

“A tough game, but we knew it would be, apart from 10 minutes towards the end of the second (quarter), I felt we controlled the game and realistically if we had of kicked straight we would have been up by five or six goals at quarter and half-time,” he said.

“(You) can’t give opportunities like that to quality outfits like Fish Creek, but to my boys’ credit, they stuck their nose over the ball and got it done.”

Fish Creek have already shown they will be a contender come September, but there is still a little work ahead.

“A disappointing day for us today, but you can only play as well as the opposition lets you, and Mirboo North were too strong for too long today, we showed some fight in the last quarter to get within range but the damage had already been done,” Fish Creek coach John Danckert said.

That damage was due to the efforts of Benjamin Campbell, Hudson Kerr and Joel Lambourn, but that trio was also well served by a pack of Tigers, all of whom are keen to take this side further than in recent years. Another big test looms however this week, when they take on the only other unbeaten side in the competition Hill End.

HILL END v MDU AS the injury list builds for the Hill End side so too does the pressure to find a 20 that can, and will continue the Rovers winning streak.

MDU certainly came to play but as they have done in recent years the Rovers found a way to win, it wasn’t pretty, far from it, but it was a win, and it kept the Hill End side’s unblemished record intact with a 6.16 (52) to 5.10 (40) success.

The match was as fierce and as tough as any you are likely to see in the 2021 season, and also an indication that there is likely to be more sides than just the six that will be worthy of making up the finals in just three months’ time.

“What a battle,” Hill End coach Mike Santo said.

“MDU are a very well organised side, we found it hard to pierce the zone on many occasions, we had to take some risks, which provided us with some scoring chances, which we squandered. Our lack of forward pressure on the scoreboard and tackle was the worst for the year, they did an amazing job on Amburupa (Uliando), but that allowed Jack Hudson to have a big impact.”

That is the Rovers strength, the “next man up” mentality that coach Santo is only possible when the depth is available, and that depth makes them very hard to beat.

“A tough high pressure game from both sides, Hill End just had the poise to kick goals at critical times, always maintaining a slender lead, our boys improved on last week and played out all four quarters, however strong efforts against top sides isn’t acceptable, we are demanding more, the boys are already setting themselves on a big effort next week,” MDU coach Peter Harris said post-match.

The clash of the Demons looms as a must win for both sides, but it probably isn’t as big as the top of the table match between Hill End and Mirboo North.

MORWELL EAST v STONY

CREEK

HOW a side responds from defeat can always give you an indication of the quality of a team, not so much their talent, but more the intangible quality of mental toughness, and after embarrassing performances a week earlier, both of these teams were desperate to grit their teeth and do what was needed to get the job done.

In the end it was a strong win to Morwell East 15.11 (101) to 3.4 (22).

The Hawks had certainly come to play and although it may not have been obvious on the scoreboard at quarter-time when the home side held just a four point lead, by half-time the match was over as the Morwell East team really started to strut their stuff.

“We wanted a response after a reality check the week prior, and we got it which was pleasing, we are learning more about ourselves every game and structurally we are starting to find a better balance, to get the bye now and be at 4-1, we’re reasonably happy, but certainly not content,” Hawks coach Devon Soutar said.

Stony Creek still has some work to do, and they seem to have the players to do it, but will need more for longer as Lions coach Jay Accardi explained.

“After a solid first term where we were able to match Morwell East in key areas of the match, but we were unable to capitalise on the scoreboard and we completely switched off, we were outplayed, out coached and most importantly out worked by a much more competitive outfit, on the upside it was pleasing to see a few boys come up from the reserves and play solid matches.”

Stony Creek, at this stage are the only side who are yet to win a game, but will have Thorpdale in their sights in just a week’s time.

NEWBOROUGH v

BOOLARRA

BOOLARRA entered the clash as favourites on the back of their strong win over Thorpdale just seven days earlier, but it was always going to be a test for the Demons, who on more than one occasion in recent years have been guilty of losing focus at the most inopportune times, this was one of those times.

Newborough secured their first win of 2021 with an impressive 15.17 (107) to 14.7 (91) victory.

The Bulldogs were primed for a performance worthy of four points and understanding that they had to put themselves in the match early, their opposition have a sprinkling of talent that can turn a game very quickly if given the chance, but the reality was very few chances were given.

Bulldogs coach Peter Ainsworth said he was “really happy with the way the team stood up when we were challenged in the last quarter for our first win of the season”.

Newborough’s cause may have been helped by a Boolarra side, operating with short of their best for much of the game, but sometimes it’s not how you do it, it’s just that you did it that matters, and while the Bulldogs celebrate their first win of the year, it could be seen as one that got away for Boolarra.

“We were beaten by a better side on the day, but it didn’t help not having a bench by quarter time,” Demons coach Tony Giardina said.

The footy gods can have no mercy (or sense of humour) at times and you hope they can be on your side more times than not, for Boolarra on this occasion they were not, but as we approach a third of the way through the season, both of these two teams will have their chances again.

YINNAR v FOSTER ANTICIPATED to be a clash of two finals contenders, the outcome was going to go a long way to determining who might be on the right track and who still had some work to do.

It was an almighty contest with both sides having their chances, but it was Foster who did the job with a narrow 7.11 (53) to 7.8 (50) victory.

The Tigers probably won the match in a second quarter burst that had them leading by 20 points at half-time, Yinnar doing everything possible to reel the visiting side in for the next 60 minutes, only to fall short by a kick for the second time in just three weeks.

“A disappointing day to say the least, we got outworked in the first half and our decision making and foot skills were not up to scratch, we lifted in the second half and got ourselves into the game which was pleasing but we obviously come up short, we need to be better for longer,” Yinnar coach Daniel Taylor said.

These losses can come back to bite teams, given there appears to be up to eight maybe even nine sides fighting for a top six spot, one close loss is disappointing, two is concerning, so lessons will need to be learnt to avoid a third.

Foster, as good sides do, just win, and although the Tigers feel they have room for improvement, coach Sam Davies can walk away with both the four points and admiration for how they got there.

“We got the result we expected, we just did it a lot harder than planned, skills were off, we were too aggressive when running forward and struggled maintaining our set ups, we only played one good quarter, but to show the determination and grit to win the game late was massive,” he said.

The win has Foster, breathing down the necks of the top few sides and ready to pounce on any stumble that they might have, in the meantime they also need to keep winning themselves.

Parrots take out a thriller

NETBALL

GIPPSLAND LEAGUE By ZAC STANDISH MORWELL were unable to celebrate stalwart Courtney Garth’s 200th game with a win, falling one goal short to the undefeated Leongatha in a nail-biting 38-37 encounter at the Morwell Recreation Reserve.

Trailing by four goals at half-time, a third quarter Parrots blitz would ultimately prove the difference, winning the term by seven goals to take a crucial lead into what was a see-sawing final stanza.

Leongatha attackers Jessica Edgar and Hannah Flanders shared the goalscoring duties with 19 apiece, while Daisy Hill was dominant in the semi-circle for the Tigers.

This result see’s Morwell fall to a 2-2 record and back to the middle rung of the ladder, while the Parrots will be beaming with confidence knowing they can take it up to the competition’s most accomplished sides. TRARALGON finally recorded their first win of the season with a convincing 57-31 win over cellar-dwellers Bairnsdale.

In need of a confidence boost, the Maroons led from start to finish with the best efforts of the Redlegs unable to phase the previously out of form Traralgon side.

Best for Traralgon were Stacey O’Brien, Rebecca Jennings and Amy Harrison, while Isla Pearson and Allison Dwyer were the stand outs for Bairnsdale. DROUIN jumped into the top five with an impressive 46-34 win over Sale.

experience of the Drouin line-up. Kym Diston and Karina Proctor were the standouts for the home side, while Jennifer Wrigglesworth and Kasey Dessant were gallant for the Magpies. WONTHAGGI registered their first win of the season with a hard-fought 40-31 triumph over Maffra.

In what was a tight tussle for the majority of proceedings, the fitness of the Power would see them break away late and spoil the Eagles’ momentum following their upset victory atTraralgon last week.

Alice Lindsay, Jessica McRae and Courtney Brann were named best for the Power, while Eliza Osborn,Abbie Ross and Jasmine Schellen battled hard for Maffra. IN YESTERDAY’S clash, Moe scored an impressive 46-32 win against Warragul.

Star attacker Taylin Gourley was in sublime form, scoring 42 of the Lions’ goals, while Ramayer Gourley was named best-on-court.

The loss was the first for Warragul this season, but Kate Steel and Alexandra Cole battled hard.

Thorpdale seals breakthrough win

Marvellous Maroons

FOOTBALL

GIPPSLAND LEAGUE By ZAC STANDISH IT was a plentiful trip east for the under pressure Traralgon on Saturday, as a Jake Best masterclass inspired his team to a 19.20 (134) to 6.4 (40) win over Bairnsdale.

Needing a response following their final quarter fade out against Maffra last week, the Maroons were on from the first bounce, quickly putting Bairnsdale to the sword with the only four majors of the opening term to take a 30-point lead into quarter time.

Their dominance would continue into the second term, with their class through the middle of the ground leading to dangerous forward entries, which the likes of Best, Dylan Loprese and Harvey Neocleous were able to take advantage of.

Taking a daunting 61-point lead into the second half, Traralgon would not let up in the third stanza with their hard-contested brand of football proving too much for the bruised and battered Redlegs outfit.

As the lead blew out past 100-points in the shadows of three-quarter-time, the Maroons would put the que in the rack in the final term, as Bairnsdale showed a bit of fight to win the last quarter and keep the final margin in double figures.

Putting through seven majors, it was as if everything the Maroons coach touched turned to gold at the Bairnsdale City Oval, with the Redlegs defenders simply powerless to stop him both in the air and on the ground.

Through the middle of the ground it was yet another prominent display by Matt Northe, who continues to grow into one of the competitions most accomplished players, while wingman Nicholas Lowden was judged best afield with his three goals.

For the well-beaten Redlegs, Simon Deery battled manfully at centre-half-back to claim the honour as his side’s best. MORWELL were unable to register their first win of the season as Leongatha continued their rich vein of form with a convincing 10.13 (73) to 4.7 (31) victory at the Morwell Recreation Reserve.

this match-up as the Parrots got the early jump with a four goal to one first quarter.

Shell-shocked initially, Morwell would begin to get the game back on their terms in the second term but were unable to make any true dent on the scoreboard as the two sides shared the points, with Leongatha going into the main change 25 points to the good.

Needing a fast start to the second half to be any chance of pulling off an upset, it was a disastrous third term for the home team, as the class and experience of the Parrots got on top around the ball and capitalised putting through three goals to none to take an unassailable 43-point lead into three quarter time.

With the result decided, it was a slog of a final term at the Morwell Recreation Reserve as the Tigers battened down the hatches with one goal to either side seeing the margin end at 42 points.

Enjoying a relatively even spread of goal kickers on the day, Cade Maskell would be the stand out for the Parrots up forward with three goals while Jackon Harry was excellent across half forward with two.

Aaron Heppell put together yet another strong performance leading Leongatha’s midfield, with Matthew Borschman being the star of show claiming best on ground honours.

For the Tigers Zachary Anderson was prominent across half-back to be named the side’s best, with Tyler Brown and Nathan Noblett also impressing in the losing cause.

Sitting at 0-4, the Tigers will be hoping they can get some reward for effort as they travel to Drouin next weekend. DROUIN produced arguably the upset of the season on Saturday afternoon, bouncing back from a poor showing against Leongatha last week to knock off the previously undefeated Sale 12.8 (80) to 7.9 (51) at the Drouin Recreation Reserve.

Getting off to a crucial fast start, the Hawks would weather the Magpie storm in the second term before putting together a scintillating six-goal third quarter to break the game open and put the result beyond doubt.

Jacob Konstanty was the star of the day up forward for the Hawks kicking four goals, while midfielder Edward Morris was prominent in the contest all day in being named best on ground.

Best for Sale were Daine McGuiness, Mitchell Dowse and Will Leslie. WONTHAGGI continued their excellent start to the season with a comfortable 15.12 (102) – 6.4 (40) win over reigning premiers Maffra away from home.

After a hard-fought first half, the Power would blow the game open in the second half with a six goal to one third quarter illustrating just how dangerous they can be when in full flight.

Now with four wins from four starts and a win over the previously dominant Maffra, the Jarryd Blair led Wonthaggi side will be full of confidence as they solidify themselves in the top two. MOE continued their undefeated start to the season with a comfortable 15.17 (107) to 7.9 (51) victory over Warragul yesterday.

With top spot up for grabs, it was a tight start at Western Park as the Gulls got on top early but struggled to convert with a score line of 2.6 (18) at the first change a missed opportunity to put real pressure on the ladder leaders.

T h e L i o n s w o u l d t a k e advantage of their opponent’s inaccuracy in the second term, as they got their game going to kick 6.1 and take a comfortable 21-point lead into half-time.

Carrying all the momentum, Moe would continue their dominance into the third quarter with the class and experience of their midfield getting on top and putting the young Warragul side to the sword.

With an unassailable lead heading into the final term, the Lions pressure would not let up as they added another four goals to help boost their already healthy percentage even further.

A revelation thus far, spearhead Kristian Jaksch was the star of the show up forward for the Lions kicking another four goals to solidify his place atop the league’s goal kicking, while Scott Van Dyk was prominent all day across half back in what was a best on ground performance.

For the Gulls, on-baller Matthew Ross tried hard all day while midfielder Mitch Nobelius was also impressive and pushed forward to kick two majors.

BOXING

By LIAM DURKIN TRARALGON Boxing Club youngsters Billy Bowker and Leo Di Donato recently stepped into the ring for their first fight.

The pair fought well in their bouts, in what was a good experience as they progress their boxing careers.

Fighting in the Victorian Amateur Boxing League, Billy and Leo ventured down to Lilydale representing Traralgon.

Billy, a Heyfield lad who won his fight on decision, said it was a good experience.

“It was a tough bout, but good to get the result in the end,” he said.

The 14-year-old believed his speed and footwork helped him achieve victory.

His older counterpart, Leo, went down in his middleweight fight, but said he learned some key lessons from his first time in the ring.

“My opponent was older than me but I took a lot out of it (the fight),” the 16-year-old from Traralgon said.

The pair are aiming to put their gloves up for another bout later this month.

Coach Craig Morris has been pleased with the boys development, and is hoping to see them chalk up victories in coming fights. Connecting winners: Founder of Buy a Racehorse Justin Darcy at his home office in

HORSE RACING

By ZAC STANDISH THERE is nothing that quite replicates the thrill of owning a racehorse.

In what can only described as a roller coaster of emotions, thousands of Australians are currently involved in the industry and are reaping the social and financial benefits.

For people interested but unsure as to how they can go about buying into a racehorse, there is a new innovation to point them in the right direction in the form of online business Buy a Racehorse.

Run by Traralgon local Justin Darcy, he explained exactly what his service provides prospective horse owners.

“We are a company that advertises shares through syndicated horses, through the likes of Dream Thoroughbreds, Slade Bloodstock, Australian Bloodstock,” Darcy said.

“We just want to get people involved in racing and owning horses which is of course a massive part of the industry and something that gives it a good image which it certainly needs some of the time.

“Syndicators will come to us at Buy a Racehorse and they will put up their horse for a set amount of money and we will advertise that horse for 12-months through social media avenues such as Facebook and Twitter.”

Being heavily involved in racing for the majority of this life, he explained what it was that made him fall in love with the industry.

“Racing has been my passion since I was five or six years old,” he said.

“I remember in Prep tipping my teacher the winner of the Melbourne Cup in Delta Blues and mum and dad have owned horses here and there, so I have been at the races a lot and around horse people. For me, it is the love between owners and their horse which is why I love the industry the most.”

Centred on connecting people with horses, Darcy said there is nothing more rewarding than helping people get involved in the industry for the very first time.

“It gets people participating in racing that may not have known much about it before,” he said.

“I personally have bought horses through this site as well and I will syndicate it out to ten friends and it just gets people involved, people who may not have known much about the industry before get to see a different side of it and see the positivity that is not always advertised.”

Along with the many potential benefits involved with syndication and racehorse ownership, Darcy did concede that there a number of risks associated with the process that people should be aware of before they get involved.

“With syndication you of course have your monthly fees, so you need to be wary that when you buy into your horse it is not just the set fee advertised on the website,” he said.

“You also have your monthly payments on your horse, so depending on who your syndicator is, depending on who the trainer is whether they are city or country, it is all different with prices fluctuating monthly and for the whole fee depending on what percentage you own.”

Moving forward he has a fair of idea of how he would like to grow his online business.

“It is all about getting syndicators involved in the site and advertising their horses with us,” he said.

“This will allows us to reach a larger customer base on social media, which will result in more people coming to the site and more people getting involved in the racing industry.”
