BUPA Traralgon is now home to the largest cluster of coronavirus cases in an aged care facility outside of Melbourne and the Geelong corridor, the Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed.

There are now 12 cases of COVID-19 at the Park Lane facility, with four new infections recorded over the weekend three employees and one resident.

The first cases - a staff member and resident - were confirmed on July 27 after a visiting health professional, who later returned a positive test result, visited the care home on July 16.

Another resident tested positive on August 3, two residents on August 4 and three staff members on August 6 - one of which had been isolating for a fortnight.

In light of the surge in case numbers, Bupa Traralgon also yesterday advised residents could be cared for in the family

home and return to the facility at a later date.

“While some families may choose this option, for those who remain in our care, we continue to do everything possible to eliminate this virus and minimise its impact as best we can. We will not stop working to protect our residents and employees,” a spokesperson said.

RESIDENTS in Latrobe City have saved more than $18 million on the pokies since gaming venues closed in March, according to data crunched by a gamblerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s help advocate.

It comes as the entire state of Victoria saved $1 billion in pokies spending since venues shut due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The Alliance for Gambling Reform calculated data from before the shutdown and divided it by average daily losses in each local government area.

The Latrobe City area lost $34.5 million in the 2019/2020 financial year, with 13 gaming venues containing 522 machines.

Latrobe Community Health Service prevention and partnerships manager Michelle Ravesi said she was â&#x20AC;&#x153;not surprisedâ&#x20AC;? at the figures, but the savings were a â&#x20AC;&#x153;good news storyâ&#x20AC;? for the community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This highlights what an enormous sum is being lost, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a staggering

Ms Ravesi said she hoped the continuing venue closures would allow people more time to keep away from pokies machines and seek help for problem gambling.

She said that the money being saved from pokies spending was now being put back into the local community, or being spent on essential items. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are now hearing stories that people can spend money on the basics such as food for their families, or treats for their kids ... they are also feeling better mentally and physically,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some said theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d been able to buy meat, which they couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t before, or clothes for their kids, things youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d expect but they couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t because of their addictions.â&#x20AC;?

Ms Ravesi said she was concerned there would be a â&#x20AC;&#x153;devastatingâ&#x20AC;? spike of people heading back into play the pokies when venues re-open, and

encouraged these people to seek help.

She said the LCHS offered gambling help services to support people experiencing gambling harm through continuing with their abstinence. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some people are breaking habits, and this is a good news story for the community,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an addiction, and this is where getting support can help make sure people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go from one addiction to another.â&#x20AC;?

Minister for Gaming and Liquor Regulation Melissa Horne said the government welcomed any work that mitigated the damaging effects of problem gambling. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As part our work to tackle problem gambling, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve frozen pokies numbers across the state, limited daily cash withdrawals in venues and capped the number of pokies in areas most vulnerable to gambling harm,â&#x20AC;? Donation warms hearts at Albert St

AFTER handing out knitted winter woollies on the streets of Moe, volunteers from Gippsland Christian Church have decided to spread the love to support students at Albert Street Primary School.

Sandy Auger, co-ordinator of the churchâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mission arm, said they recently donated $500 towards the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s uniform shop to support disadvantaged students. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Gippsland Christian Church have donated $500 towards the uniform shop to have a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;pay it forwardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; fund there, so that school can use this to help children to be in uniform and thus stop any stigma that have or may impact a child,â&#x20AC;? she said.

hand-made woolly hats, scarves and gloves around Moe last month, said the church will top-up the funds as needed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The school staff will identify which child needs a uniform due to financial difficulty,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They (students) donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to know where itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s coming from. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just given out of love thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no catch at all.â&#x20AC;?

Ms Auger said volunteers once again made fresh winter items for distribution along Moeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s streets but due to current restrictions had decided to donate them to the school.

She said a group of women volunteers made the items in different sizes to suit students from prep to older children.

Butchers stocked up to meat demand Moe abattoir adjusts to new restrictions

MOE abattoir Greenham Gippsland remains confident it can maintain continuous supply to its customers under reduced production as restrictions on meatworks workforces which came into effect on Saturday.

The Australian-owned meat processor spent the past week working with government and industry bodies on the new Stage 4 coronavirus restrictions across Melbourne and Geelong.

The Victorian government ordered red meat and pork processors to cut their workforces by one-third to help mitigate COVID19 outbreaks recorded at several abattoirs in the state.

Greenham group general operations manager Tom Maguire said the abattoir would reduce the amount of people on processing shifts, as directed by the government. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The reduction of shifts will ultimately lead to reduced throughput, however we remain confident that we can maintain continuity of supply to our key customers during this period,â&#x20AC;? Mr Maguire said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are grateful to remain open and are pleased to be able to maintain and support all staff during this period of Stage 4 restrictions.â&#x20AC;?

Greenham operates abattoirs in Tasmania and Tongala and carried out extensive expansions to the Moe plant in 2017, enabling it to double production and provide 100 extra jobs. Mr Maguire said the company was reminded â&#x20AC;&#x153;how lucky we are to continue to run the business we love so muchâ&#x20AC;?.

LOCAL butchers have assured customers that supply will meet demand as people stock up on meat in response to the state governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recently announced workforce restrictions on the meat industry.

Premier Daniel Andrews ordered Victorian abattoirs to cut their workforces by one-third and poultry processors to run at 80 per cent capacity to mitigate COVID-19 outbreaks at certain facilities.

Traralgon Rutters Butchery owner Pat Rutter said last weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s takings were double the weekly turnover after the announcement.

It comes as some locals reported empty meat shelves at major supermarkets, with people flocking to buy in bulk amid fears of shortages.

Mr Rutter said his business was booming last week, but less people were panic buying this time around compared to the first lot of Stage 3 restrictions in March. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have had no warnings from our abattoir that there will be shortages, I think things have been overplayed,â&#x20AC;?

Mr Rutter said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As long as people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go silly there will be plenty for everyone.â&#x20AC;?

Big boost for Neighbourhood House

ENGIE Hazelwood has donated $50,000 to local organisations to celebrate its health and safety record on the Hazelwood Rehabilitation Project.

The rehabilitation project marked four years and more than four million staff hours without a lost time accident.

The Latrobe Valleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s four neighbourhood houses and the local arm of the Salvation Army received $10,000 each.

Hazelwood rehabilitation project director Tony Innocenzi said similar safety milestones had often been celebrated internally. â&#x20AC;&#x153;However, in the current economic and social environment brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, we felt it more appropriate to provide support to local organisations directly assisting the community,â&#x20AC;? Mr Innocenzi said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want to support our population to think about their individual safety, and the welfare of their family, friends and community through these worthy organisations.â&#x20AC;?

The Traralgon Neighbourhood and Learning House will make and supply masks, provide emergency food relief and combat social isolation.

The Salvation Army will use the donation on direct aid to the community, including food, pharmaceutical and back-to-school costs and distributing toys for Christmas.

Regulator says mine bonds will be reviewed

THE mining regulator has assured that Latrobe Valley brown coal mine bonds are up to date and will be regularly reviewed, in light of a Victorian Auditor-Generalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s report released last week.

The VAGO report into mining rehabilitation found regulatory failures that included outdated cost estimates and failures to effectively make sure mine sites were rehabilitated at the end of their life.

The report also found that hundreds of the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mines and quarries had no rehabilitation bonds at all, or some bonds were not being reviewed.

Earth Resources Regulation executive director Anthony Hurst said the report mainly focused on the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s smaller quarries as coal mines were already subject to tighter regulations after the Hazelwood mine fire inquiry.

Mr Hurst said legislative improvements included the Mine Land Rehabilitation Authority overseeing Valley mine rehabilitation, as well as the release of the Latrobe Valley Regional Rehabilitation Strategy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a lot of work since the mine fire inquiry into coal mines. The overall picture for coal mines is good and strong,â&#x20AC;? Mr Hurst said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are bonds totalling hundreds of millions of dollars

Mr Hurst said the regulator was now focusing on about 24 high-risk mines and quarries across the state, and did not rule out that some of these higher risk sites could be in Gippsland.

He said some of the risks included ground movement, on-site contaminants, or exposed drop-offs that could pose immediate risks to the public or environment. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We will work with the

operators to optimise rehabilitation activities and minimise risks and renew bonds based on the highest risk sites,â&#x20AC;? Mr Hurst said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is no doubt the VAGO report highlighted significant issues and we welcome the scrutiny, we are driven to address this as it underpins government and public confidence in the sector.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Hurst said the ERR had already taken steps to improve rehabilitation regulations which the regulator identified in a 2018 review.

A Regulatory Practice Strategy for the Rehabilitation of Earth Resources Sites was released in February, addressing many of the issues highlighted by the VAGO audit.

He said the regulator was working with operators and co-regulators to overhaul the rehabilitation of sites and bonds, guided by this new strategy.

Mr Hurst said improvements included ensuring the regulator operated at armâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s length from the economic development portfolio to avoid any perceived conflicts of interest.

It also included expanding the range of stakeholder engagement groups and encouraging mine and quarry operators to publicly release their rehabilitation plans.

Consider this: Specsavers chief audiologist Nick Taylor said it was important to be mindful of those who are hard of hearing when communicating while wearing a mask.

AN audiologist has advised community members to be mindful of people with hearing difficulties with a mandatory mask-wearing policy now in effect across regional Victoria.

Specsavers chief audiologist Nick Taylor said communicating with someone wearing a mask can be challenging for people with hearing loss, as they rely on lip reading. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lip reading is a natural part of any communication and we use it every single day,â&#x20AC;? Mr Taylor said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Masks can be challenging for people with (normal hearing) and this can be magnified for people with hearing loss.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Taylor said members of the community who are hard of hearing may experience anxiety and, as a result, feel socially isolated if they are not able to understand someone wearing a mask. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They may feel embarrassed

to keep asking people to repeat themselves.They can feel socially isolated as theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not able to join in meaningful conversations,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Humans are designed to be sociable and the wearing of masks just makes it a little bit harder.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Taylor stressed he was not discouraging the wearing of masks, as it is now mandatory to stop the spread of COVID-19, but said people should be patient when communicating with those who are hard of hearing.

He said a face mask can muffle speech and urged people to speak slowly and clearly when communicating with someone experiencing difficulty hearing.

He said masks that have seethrough panels showing the mouth are useful.

Mr Taylor advised people who struggle with their hearing to visit their local audiologist to discuss their options.

Residents frustrated by waiting game COVID-19 testing: Step-by-step advice 1. If you are feeling unwell do not go to work.

2. Check for symptoms of fever, chills or sweats, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose and loss of sense of smell or taste.

3. Get tested at a nearby testing location if you have any of the symptoms and return home immediately. Other members of your household must also self-isolate.

4. Wait for your test results.

Do not go to work or go out shopping, stay at home. If you are worried your results are taking too long you can call a service provider for more information.

5. If you are worried you will lose pay while you wait for your results you may be eligible for a $300 coronavirus Test Isolation Payment.

6. If you test negative, go about your normal activity, following the restrictions for your location.

7. If you test positive, you will need to self-isolate for 14 days.

Do not go to work. If you are worried you will lose pay you may be eligible for a $1500 coronavirus (COVID-19) Worker Support Payment.

8. If your condition worsens contact your doctor or a health professional. If you become very unwell and are having trouble breathing contact triple zero (000).

9. If you have tested positive, have self-isolated for 14 days and have recovered, you can resume your normal activity, following the restrictions for your location.

ON a daily basis, Member for Morwell Russell Northe said he is contacted by a number of locals struggling with long waiting times for coronavirus testing and results.

One of those locals, Hazelwood North resident Kate Miljons, has been through the COVID-19 testing process multiple times in the last four months.

Ms Miljons has had the test once herself and taken her son to be tested three times, as he has been sick with some of the symptoms.

The results have all been negative.

“We have a chronic health issue in my family so it is important for us to get the test results as quickly as possible so we can figure out what the issue is when we are sick,” Ms Miljons said.

“The longer we wait the more difficult it becomes for us ... we needed fast answers to see what is going on.

“When I first went to get a test I thought that, since you see all the cars lined up for testing on the news, that it would be really easy to just go and get a test.

“I later realised you had to book in and it took two days until I could get my first test and my son had to wait five days for one of his.

Ms Miljons said the long wait time for testing and results was also hard on her

children, 13 and 15, who missed a lot of school while waiting for results.

“We had to wait a few days for a test appointment, then we had to wait about five days for a result ... my husband and I are lucky, we are at home most of the time but it was frustrating for my kids who had just returned to on-site learning,” she said.

“The long wait times also mean that the government are missing the window of contract tracing, and while you wait for results people you have been in contact with are just going about their life.

“We are also lucky because we live on a big block of land, I can’t imagine what it would be like for people isolating in apartments.”

Ms Miljons said she understands there are some issues with the testing process because of the unprecedented nature of the virus.

“I am very grateful to the health professionals and politicians who are working very hard during this time ... it’s a global pandemic so it must be hard to organise, but the finer points haven’t been fleshed out and that is what is so frustrating,” she said.

VCE students and ATARs to be assessed individually VCE students will be individually assessed this year and any adverse impacts of COVID-19 reflected in ATAR rankings, Premier Daniel Andrews announced last week.

The move forms part of a wideranging process to ensure fair and accurate results in an “unprecedented” year of school.

“For Victorian students in their final years of school, as well as their parents, carers, families and teachers – this has been a year like no other,” Mr Andrews said on Friday.

The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) will introduce the Consideration of Educational Disadvantage process to calculate VCE scores, taking into account disruptions to learning caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

“This new process will mean the only thing impacted students need to focus on is their exams – and doing their best,” Mr Andrews said.

“In a normal year, individual students are assessed for special consideration on a case by case basis.

“This year, schools will provide the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) with information on every single one of their students.

The VCAA will consider a range of data alongside exam results, including a student’s expected achievement levels before the impact of coronavirus.

It will include school assessments completed prior to remote and flexible learning, the General Achievement Test (GAT) and a range of statistical analyses to calculate final results.

Ms Bath said as the second wave of coronavirus continues in Victoria, it is evident the region requires additional COVID-19 testing sites to complement the respiratory clinic on Princes Drive in Morwell. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the past week the Latrobe Valley has now seen two major businesses report an employee with a positive case of coronavirus, while an aged care facility has reported positive cases resulting in more local residents requiring testing,â&#x20AC;? Ms Bath said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Appointments at the Latrobe Valleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Respiratory Clinic are filling quickly with ballooning wait times.â&#x20AC;?

All non-urgent surgery on ice

THE state government has paused all Category 3 and non-urgent Category 2 elective surgeries in regional Victoria, as part of Stage 3 â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Stay at Homeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; restrictions.

On Wednesday, the government confirmed these changes to elective surgeries to ensure local hospitals have beds, equipment and staff they need to continue the fight against coronavirus.

Where possible, Category 3 and non-urgent Category 2 surgeries may still take place but this is at the discretion of the hospitals.

Category 1 and urgent Category 2 surgeries will still take place, IVF activity will also be exempt from the restrictions.

The decision to pause these surgeries in regional Victoria follows the pause of all Category 3 and non-urgent Category 2 elective surgeries in metropolitan Melbourne to reduce elective surgery lists across public and private hospitals.

Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said regional Victorians can be assured that, where possible, pre-booked elective surgery will proceed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Those who need unexpected and urgent care will proceed at all hospitals,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We know this will mean an anxious time for many Victorians whose surgery is delayed, but weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll resume our elective surgery blitz as soon as itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s safe to do so, to catch up any backlog as quickly as possible.â&#x20AC;?

Traralgon Show a no-go for this year

THE Traralgon and District Agricultural Society has cancelled this year’s Traralgon Show scheduled for December 4 and 5 due to COVID-19.

The cancellation means this is the fourth year in a row the show has not been able to run, however, the committee hopes to forge ahead with next year’s milestone 130th event.

All other 2020 Gippsland shows have also been canned, along with this year’s Royal Melbourne Show.

The Traralgon Show committee made the “extremely difficult but inevitable” decision after it determined the event was not viable in light of continuing COVID-19 restrictions and public health risks.

Traralgon A&P Society project manager Caitlin Grigsby said it would take more than six months to prepare and facilitate an event of this size.

“We feel this difficult decision is wholly justified to minimise impact and preserve the health and safety of all participants, community attendees and volunteers of the Traralgon Show,” Ms Grigsby said.

“We also recognise the significant impact upon local business and industries hit hard by the burden of coronavirus, shut-downs and restrictions and do not wish to exhaust community

Earnings blow for EnergyAustralia YALLOURN Power Station operator EnergyAustalia has reported its underlying earnings fell by 20 per cent in the first half of 2020 compared to the same time last year.

The energy giant blamed the fall on difficult trading conditions, price re-regulation, intense competition for retail customers and lower wholesale power prices.

EnergyAustralia contributed $252 million to its Hong Kong parent company CLP Group and paid $89 million in corporate tax in the six months ending June 30.

Operationally, the company’s largest power station at Yallourn performed well, recording 100 per cent availability on the five hottest days of summer 2019/20.

EnergyAustralia managing director Catherine Tanna said the company would continue to press ahead with a major maintenance and upgrade at Yallourn.

Ms Tanna said it would also go ahead with upgrades at the Mt Piper power station and assess more than 1000 megawatts of new gas-fired generation options.

She said the business was continuing to help its customers manage an “extremely challenging immediate future” for people experiencing bill hardship.

Since March, EnergyAustralia has responded to a 70 per cent increase in average daily calls from people in hardship.

“It has been a cruel and challenging year for Australia, and I know many of our customers have struggled,” Ms Tanna said.

“While EnergyAustralia’s underlying performance has deteriorated, we’ve prioritised investing in getting the most support to those most in need.”

SICK and vulnerable babies from the Gippsland region will now be better supported following the Humpty Dumpty Foundation’s donation of a high-tech ventilator to Latrobe Regional Hospital’s Special Care Nursery.

This lifesaving donation worth $59,120 was made possible from an exceptionally generous bequest from the estate of Lorna Blackwood.

To ensure Lorna’s legacy will be carried on for many years to come, the Humpty Dumpty Foundation will be donating a significant piece of equipment to every state and territory across the country and the Babylog VN500 Ventilator for Latrobe Regional Hospital is one of the donations.

The equipment provides state-ofthe-art ventilation therapy for the sickest of babies who may have been born prematurely or need help to breathe following surgery.

The ventilator has the capacity to help the most fragile babies by providing fast, high frequency oscillation as well as standard conventional ventilation, to aid recovery.

Latrobe Regional Hospital general manager inpatient services Heidi Knott said the equipment would make a major contribution to the care of babies across the Gippsland region.

“We are so grateful to the Humpty Dumpty Foundation,” Ms Knott said.

“As the regional referral hospital for complex obstetric cases, Latrobe Regional Hospital cares for a high number of babies who require additional medical support.

$157,000 Regional Agricultural Show Development grant in May to carry out repairs and refurbishments to the historical craft pavilion.

The funding will enable critical repairs such as re-cladding, rewiring, roof repairs and sealing, new internal toilets and a bathroom.

The show society had already renovated the Rural Meeting Room and secretary’s office, and had cleared and archived records and with the help of Gippsland Ranges Roller Derby volunteers.

The committee will now start working on the show’s web page and an online entry system.

Show secretary Lorraine Anderson said they were devastated to not host this year’s event, particularly after the considerable reinvigoration from society members from behind the scenes.

“We are, however, very pleased to have a silver lining to concentrate on,” Ms Anderson said.

“We all look forward to offering a wonderful community venue at the Arts Pavilion in six months and to use this time to improve our other facilities, security and disability access in this time.”

WORKS have begun at TAFE Gippsland for the second stage of the Morwell Campus’ $35.5 million redevelopment.

The Stage 2 works will see the construction of the new Morwell Trade Skills Centre, with preliminary works started at the site in July.

The fit-for-purpose innovative building was designed by architects GHDWoodhead, and it will be built by ADCO Constructions.

TAFE Gippsland chief executive Grant Radford said the Morwell Trade Skills Centre will complete the major redevelopment of the Morwell campus.

“This state-of-the-art building will offer training in electrotechnology, new energy systems, instrumentation and plumbing trade training with specialist workshop, lab facilities and more

general purpose classrooms,” he said.

“This second stage of our major redevelopment at Morwell will bring first class trade skills training facilities to Morwell and provide exciting new vocational training opportunities to our Latrobe Valley and broader Gippsland region students.

QUANTUM Support Services has announced the appointment of Natalie McDonald as the new chief executive.

Ms McDonald brings experience as an executive leader in the healthcare sector to her new role and said she is excited to be joining the team at Quantum.

“Quantum has a long record of providing high quality support across a range of social and community services throughout the Gippsland region,” she said.

“I look forward to leading the organisation to continue and expand in the provision of quality support services to the Gippsland community.”

Quantum chair Ronald Davies said the board was seeking a leader who could build on Quantum’s strong foundations.

“The board was seeking a leader to expand our partnerships, shape our future through innovative business models and grow our services to support more children, young people and families in Gippsland,” he said.

“We are confident that Natalie’s experiences and approach to supporting and cultivating team work and partnerships will continue to strengthen the great work of and reputation that is Quantum.”

A CALL for Gippsland to have its own database of racial discrimination incidents was issued during a recent webinar.

Ninety people from different cultural backgrounds, including government and service providers, sat down for a webinar on July 30 and discussed the issue of racial discrimination.

Organised by the United Muslim Sisters of Latrobe Valley, in collaboration with the Latrobe Health Assembly and the Pharmacy Guild of Victoria, the one-hour webinar allowed participants to share ideas about and experiences of racism faced by members of multicultural and Aboriginal communities.

UMSLV president Arfa Khan said racial discrimination was prevalent in Gippsland, but maintained it was “under-reported”, unlike in metropolitan Melbourne.

“There were incidents happening in schools, there’s bullying because of one’s colour, discrimination in the workplace, and Indigenous Australians experiencing racism,” she said.

Ms Khan said it was important to build a database of racial discrimination incidents in Gippsland as many people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds settle in regional areas.

She said racial discrimination can occur in many instances, however it was not reported, largely due to “fear of backlash”.

“There’s this expectation to perform better, like you need to always prove yourself to employers,” she said.

She said some instances of discrimination had the potential to negatively impact a victim’s mental health, with some feeling they had no choice but to resign.

pandemic had intensified incidents of racial discrimination, with some people inferring a link between the pandemic and certain cultural backgrounds.

“We know that these things happen, so there really needs to (be) a study conducted in the Gippsland region,” Ms Khan said.

Ms Khan said people experiencing racial discrimination should report incidents to police or the Victorian Multicultural Commission.

The sessions will include discussion around team culture and leadership, building positive relationships, planning for success and the competitive cycle in interactive online forums.

Tarwin Street is spruced up

TARWIN Street in Morwell is looking a little bit more colourful with the addition of Latrobe City Council’s gathering space.

The project is part of the Morwell Revitalisation Project and has seen the installation of seating, a brightly coloured shade area and a ‘Hub of the Valley’ inlay embedded into the pavement.

Latrobe City councillor Graeme Middlemiss said the “major physical work” at the site had been completed and that a keen eye for Morwell’s history was included as part of the project.

“There are few final touches to add to Tarwin Street, we will re-seal the road around September, when the weather is more suited for it and add some planting boxes,” he said.

“Forty to 50 years ago the Morwell Shire built a sign in Tarwin Street which had to be removed when we resealed the road, and we thought it would be a bit of fun to replace it with a new one.

“So, we have created a more modern version of the inlay that was once there.”

The Morwell Revitalisation Project encompasses works to beautify Commercial Road and Tarwin Street in Morwell, as well as a new entrance sign and rose gardens.

The project is set to re-brand Morwell as the ‘Town of Gardens’, and was funded with $1.75 million from the federal government’s Regional Jobs and Investment Package and $1 million from the state government through the Latrobe Valley Authority and Regional Development Victoria.

Faster regional rail to provide economic boost A NEW report has found fast regional rail services to Traralgon and other regional centres will deliver a $200 billion boost to the Victorian economy.

The Stronger, Together report, released on July 29, assessed a proposal to upgrade the V/ Line network to boost train speeds to 200km/h between Melbourne and larger regional centres, like the Latrobe Valley.

It found an upgrade would significantly cut travel times, double capacity and provide a massive boost to the state’s economy by 2060.

It would also reduce travel times from Traralgon to Southern Cross Station by rail from 140 minutes to 95 minutes.

The report explains how fast trains lead to a strengthening of the population and economic activity in the region and adjacent regions.

The Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Region Melina Bath said the worsening pressure of the coronavirus pandemic meant it was more important than ever before to look at ways to boost the state’s economic future.

“Gippslanders deserve a fast, reliable and modern rail service and fast rail will be a game-changer for Gippsland,” Ms Bath said.

“Many Gippslanders commute daily for work, attend specialist medical appointments in the city or attend tertiary education and have been subjected to a substandard service. “’Gippsland’s inadequate rail service is more miss than hit, having failed to meet punctuality targets for over five years.

“The coronavirus pandemic is changing the way we live and work. Planning for a stronger future for regional Victoria will help to build confidence as we strive to get Victorians back to work and back in business.

“The report was commissioned by the Stronger Together Alliance, a group of regional city councils, universities and regional business and community leaders who are advocating for massive upgrades to country rail services.”

invested in 26 innovative projects nationwide that would deliver real safety benefits to the heavy vehicle industry and other road users.

“The Australian government takes road safety seriously, because no family should have to endure the utter devastation road crashes cause,” he said.

“That is why it is absolutely vital we continue to invest in critical initiatives that improve road safety to save lives and reduce road trauma, including across our heavy vehicle sector.

“The 26 projects across the nation being funded this round target key areas such as developing or testing innovative new technologies, mental health support for drivers, educational campaigns and much-needed training and development.”

FUNDING has been granted for a project aimed saving lives and reducing road trauma in Gippsland.

Last week it was announced the Local Truck Safety Networks Development Project would receive funding under round five of the government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the funding would kick-start the transformative project ans improve road safety in Gippsland.

“Moving towards zero fatalities and serious injuries on the roads is a key goal for the federal government, with the HVSI one of the many ways we are investing in road safety to help achieve that,” he said.

Revamp: The Gippsland Cricket League season for seniors and under 18s has been restructured into a two-pool competition.

Coronavirus concerns prompt GCL shake-up GIPPSLAND Cricket Region 7 held its annual meeting recently, with the previous seasons executive all reelected for another term.

George Munro will lead the Region again as president, while David Anderson and Neil Purdy will continue to serve as secretary and treasurer, respectively.

Season 2019-20 marked the completion of the Latrobe Valley and District Cricket League’s two season term as Gippsland Cricket League and Junior Country Week hosts, and as such,Wayne Mills stepped down as the Regions vice-president.

With the Bairnsdale Cricket

Association now taking on the role, Ian Kyle assumed the mantle of vice-president.

All six Gippsland cricket associations, Bairnsdale, Latrobe Valley, Leongatha, Traralgon, Sale-Maffra and Warragul were able to confirm their board members for season 2020-21.

Long-serving Traralgon and District Cricket Association delegate Gavin Foenander stepped down after eight seasons of service, with current TDCA secretary Nick Scammell transitioning into the role.

All other associations confirmed their 2019-20 board members would continue, namely: Ian Kyle (Bairnsdale), Wayne

Mills (Latrobe Valley), Russel Matthews (Leongatha), Ross McMillan (SaleMaffra) and Mick O’Neill (Warragul).

A number of resolutions were also passed.

Specifically, the Gippsland Cricket League season for seniors and under 18s has been revamped into a two pool competition.

The new format will see two pools created and reduce the usual five round competition to three games per team plus the final.

Sale-Maffra, Traralgon and Bairnsdale will make up one pool, whilst Leongatha,Warragul and Latrobe Valley will play in another.

Each team will play one home game, one away game and will have a bye in the pool stage.

The top two teams from each pool will then play a semi-final against a corresponding opponent in the opposite pool.

The minor premier from the pools will play the second ranked team from the other pool for a place in the final, whilst the third ranked teams will play each other in a consolation final.

Teams that top the pools will get a home ground advantage for the semi-final.

Individual performances in the pool stage and the semi-finals will determine

the All-Gippsland team.

Further cost cutting measures

by Cricket Victoria to withdraw the Regional Big Bash have also led to the cancelation of the Kookaburra Cup. The Kookaburra Cup is an annual fixture in Gippsland Cricket pitting the two best performed teams from across Gippsland in the previous season against each other for the right to represent the Region at the Regional Big Bash.

Women’s GCL will be also be reduced to a maximum of four days plus a final.

Given the current climate, it appears a long-shot the cricket season will start at its usual time of early October.

At the time, Traralgon Tennis Association head coach Graham Charlton remarked the youngster’s greatest asset was his unwavering self-assurance.

“Even when Federer was here you thought he’d be top 50 or top 20 in the world, then when I saw Gasquet I thought he’d be top 10,” Charlton said.

“Seeing Nick play there’s one thing that stands out, and that’s his self-belief; he has unbelievable confidence in himself and the game to match it.”

Then 17, Kyrgios swept through the ITF junior in Traralgon with minimal fuss, blowing South African Wayne Montgomery off the court in the final 6-2, 6-1 with his already booming serve and ground strokes.

IN 2013, a bright-eyed and brash teen raised eyebrows at the AGL Loy Yang Traralgon Junior International with his flashy, big-hitting brand of tennis.

Seemingly unawed by the event’s prestige and its illustrious honour roll of past winners, 17-year-old Canberran Nick Kyrgios etched his name alongside Roger Federer’s on the championship shield with victory in the boys’ final.

With an imposing serve and heavy ground strokes, The Express chronicled the teen sensation’s “Akubra crown” win on Monday, January 21, 2013.

The second seeded 17-year-old power player overcame South African sixth seed Wayne Montgomery, who Nick won last year’s double title with, in straight sets 6-2 6-1 to become just the fourth Australian to win the event.

The long levered Australian set the tone for the match at 1-1 in the first set, when he served three consecutive aces to go from 30-40 down on serve to claim the game.

Nick then broke Wayne in the following game to establish a 3-1 lead, and continually found clutch first serves to quash the South African’s attempts to hit back.

After running away with the first set, Nick again broke early in the second after a long deuce game to go up 3-1 before breaking a second time to record an emphatic 6-2 6-1 drubbing.

“I’ve got a bit of size on Wayne and I knew I couldn’t let him run me around to dictate points; I knew I had to come out and serve well (and) my serve sort of got me here this week,” Nick said.

“I knew I had to play aggressive whenever I could and obviously that’s my strength, shrinking the count and not giving my opponent much time.”

The win capped off a hectic week for Nick who travelled to Melbourne to play his Australian Open men’s doubles first round last Wednesday, which he ultimately lost, directly after his semi-final in Traralgon.

Nick went into the junior Australian open full of confidence after the win and started his campaign in Melbourne with a 6-2 6-3 win over Turkey’s Cem Ilkel, as he looks to emulate his grand slam doubles success in singles competitions after claiming two doubles slams in 2012.

“It’s a privilege to play in the Australian Open, it’s one of the four biggest tournaments you’ll ever play in and it’s the best experience for tennis.”
