Revised recommendations reported, faculty vote to occur CASSANDRA BARRETT ’19 EDITOR-IN-CHIEF The Executive Committee of the Lebanon Valley College Board of Trustees directed the administration and faculty to work cooperatively to achieve the goal of reducing $1.6 million from academic and organizational costs.

The faculty task force, comprised of Patrick Brewer, associate professor of actuarial science; Treva Clark, associate professor of business administration; Deanna Dodson, professor of psychology; Christopher Heffner, associate professor of music; Jennifer Kanupka, associate professor of education; Walter Patton, associate

professor of chemistry; and Grant Taylor, professor of art and visual culture, reported its second draft of recommendations to the faculty on Thursday, Nov. 1.

The second report recommends the elimination of French, German, philosophy and religion majors. The early retirement incentive for full-

time faculty is expected to produce a savings of nearly $320,000, and involuntary separations of faculty members is estimated to save the College nearly $420,000.

LVC to host 7th annual miniTHON SPENCER PATERICK ’21 STAFF WRITER Every year, Penn State puts on its famous THON event, a 48-hour event where participants are encouraged to get up, dance and have fun in order to raise money for childhood cancer research.

THON was established in 1973 and has raised more than $157 million since. In 1973, just more than $2,000 was raised. Last year, the THON event raised more than $10 million. All of the money goes to the Four Diamonds

Fund, a partner of Penn State Children’s Hospital that is committed to fighting childhood cancer.

Across the country, colleges and universities have their very own “miniTHON” events that aim to do the same as the original THON. LVC is one of the many colleges that participate in this event.

Last year, LVC’s miniTHON raised more than $5,800 in support of childhood cancer research.

Those wishing to participate can contact lvcteamftk@gmail.com. Regis-

tration to participate costs $20 which includes a short sleeve t-shirt, or $25 for a long sleeve t-shirt. Students can also support this cause by purchasing shirts for the LVC vs. Albright football game, which takes place on Nov. 10.

This year’s miniTHON will take place on Friday, Nov. 9, from 7 p.m. until 11:45 p.m. Check in starts at 5:30 p.m. The theme for this year will be Disney Pixar’s “Up.” Donations can be made online as well.

Breen Center looks to expand students’ career opportunities Meridyth sanders ’21 STAFF WRITER LVC’s Breen Center for Graduate Success continually looks for new ways for students to rise above competition and get on the career path of their dreams.

Formerly known as Career Development, the Breen Center offers resources for current LVC students as well as alumni. The Breen Center also hosts events that give students opportunities to make professional connections and secure internships and potential job offers.

Students who are applying for jobs or internships may bring résumés, cover letters and personal statements into the Breen Center for review be-

fore submission. Personal appointments for document reviews can be made via Handshake, but students may also take advantage of the dropin hours.

The Breen Center recently expanded its drop-in times to include hours on Monday through Thursday. Students may attend drop-in hours for a document review, career advice or academic advice.

Students looking for possible career connections may attend events hosted by the Breen Center such as Pizza with Professionals, an ongoing program that allows students to hear stories from people in a variety of careers while enjoying complimentary lunch in the Lebegern Learning Commons.

This week’s Mock Interview Mania, the Breen Center’s latest event, gave students the chance to register for practice interviews with legitimate professionals. This opportunity allows for students to develop strong interview skills and receive credible feedback.

The next scheduled Pizza with Professionals will be held on Nov. 13 at 11 a.m., with representatives from York County Children and Youth. Students may register in advance on Handshake.

Changes to Constellation LVC also made the list of recommendations, and these suggested alterations are being discussed with the general education committee.

The final faculty endorsement vote is slated to take place on Thursday, Nov. 29, at the Faculty Business Meeting. Two faculty meetings are scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 8 and 15, for final faculty input and discussion before the endorsement vote on Nov. 29. The recommendation report is subject to change before the Faculty Business Meeting, but will be final on voting day.

Stay updated with Metz MASON GREEN ’22 STAFF WRITER A new app has launched on campus that will serve as an easy access guide for students.

Metz Culinary Management released an app called “Metz @ LVC,” which will provide students with a variety of data. The app includes student opinions of the meals they are eating with 1 to 5 star ratings, a menu for each meal of the day and a log-in option where students can view meal plans and flex balances.

“The app was a student idea to get information from Metz to the student body in a user-friendly form,” Tim Hartlieb, Metz operations manager, said. “It was championed by students and turned into a student project.”

Before going to eat their meal, students can now check the menu available for the day with the click of their phones, as well as any special promotions Metz runs.

It was important for the information to be available to the students in an effective manner. Improvements to the app are also expected.

“It will be able to handle nutritional information and allergies to food so that students can plan their meals in advance if they have any allergy or diet restrictions,” Hartlieb said.

As of now, the new developments are still in progress with the integration of the Metz recipe database, but the app is available to download to students and faculty.

Art of war COURTNEY MENGEL ’19 STAFF WRITER The Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery’s next exhibition will show soldiers’ intimate and varied experiences of war.

Stemming from a desire to explore the nature and impact of war through first-hand experience, “Witness to War” provides an altogether raw and starkly intimate introspective of the experience of war and its aftermath.

The exhibition will feature paintings, photographs and sculptures – some of which were completed by retired Marine and former combat artist Michael D. Fay, adjunct professor of art and visual culture. The works will be categorized into three sections: “Witness to Combat,” “Witness to Trauma” and “Witness to Remembrance.”

“By dividing an exhibition into sections, one provides a perspective through which the viewer can better understand and appreciate the work,” Rebecca Worhach ’16, assistant of the Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery,

said. “The sections of this exhibition highlight the works within each section as distinctive elements of the multi-faceted experience that is war.”

Another work to be featured in the exhibition is “Prayer Boots” by Robin Brooks of the U.S. Navy. The work is an assemblage of five pairs of used combat boots that hang from a heavy link chain. Visitors will have the opportunity to write their own messages or prayers and place them inside the boots.

In the land of Illyria, Duke Orsino pines for the love of Lady Olivia, but Olivia refuses to entertain any proposals of marriage as she mourns the recent death of her brother. Nearby, a young aristocratic woman named Viola is swept ashore from a recent shipwreck. Assuming her twin brother, Sebastian, has drowned, Viola attempts to figure out what work she can do.

A sea captain tells Viola about Orsino’s courtship of Olivia, so Viola hopes to work in Olivia’s home; however, since Olivia refuses to talk with strangers, Viola decides against working for Olivia. Instead, Viola disguises herself as a man, takes on the name of Cesario and goes to work for Orsino.

Viola, disguised as Cesario, quickly becomes a favorite of Orsino. As Viola continues to work for Orsino, she finds herself falling in love with him – a difficult love to pursue considering Orsino believes her to be a man.

More people should attend events like this to become more aware of the people around them.”

The Black Student Union, Hispanic Alliance and Asian Culture Club will continue their work to promote inclusion and understanding on LVC’s campus. Another event will be held later this month.

BRETT MARS ’19 STAFF WRITER The LVC football team hopes to finish the 2018 season on a high note.

Through nine games, the Flying Dutchmen have a 1-8 record. The season has been a disappointing one, but there still remains a chance for the Dutchmen to do something that few LVC football teams have done in recent years. That something would be winning the season finale against Albright College and giving the student body a chance to march on Kreiderheim.

In addition to the game having

Chance to march some extra meaning for all Dutchmen players, it will be a special day for the seniors. Because it’s the last home game of the season, Saturday’s game will serve as senior day; it’s a day where not only the senior football players are honored before kickoff, but also the senior cheerleaders.

“To be able to beat Albright and give our student body the chance to march on Kreiderheim to request a day off from school would be awesome,” Ryan Fink, senior running back and team captain, said. “We did it two years ago and it was a great feeling, so to do it again would be really neat.”

Fink also knows that Saturday’s

game will be filled with emotions.

“It’s the last time that our senior class will get to play in a college football game, so beating our rivals would be a great way to end our careers,” Fink said.

Sophomore quarterback Kody Kegarise also knows what’s at stake.

“When I think about Saturday’s game, I can’t help but think back to my senior day in high school and how awesome it was to win,” Kegarise said.

“Sending our seniors out with a win and allowing them to enjoy the same feeling I had in high school would be truly special.”

During the 2018 season, Kat scored 23 goals and obtained 6 assists for a total of 52 points. She led the MAC conference with 23 goals, 52 points, 7 game-winning goals and 1.35 goals per game. She ranks fourth in NCAA Division III for her 1.35 goals per game statistic.

Both Attieh and Kat ended their seasons in the MAC Championship SemiFinals. The women’s volleyball team was defeated by Arcadia, 3-1 matches and the women’s field hockey team fell short to Messiah, 7-0.

and right slide hitter, was named the Rookie of the Year in the MAC Conference for women’s volleyball.

“I contribute my success to my coach, James O’Brien, for developing and cultivating my skills as a runner and putting it all together to shape my freshman season,” Griffin said. “I also contribute it to my mom, who has always pushed me to go beyond what I thought I could do and never settle for anything less than my very best.”

At the MAC Championship, LVC men’s cross country team finished sixth as a team. Griffin placed 23rd with a time of 27:53.7 and received the ROTY award after the race.

“It was a goal at the beginning of the season,” Griffin said. “Getting caught up in the success of my teammates caused it to drift to the back of my mind until I finished my race at MAC’s and realized it was still a possibility. The accumulation of all of the

hard work of my season was absolutely incredible seeing it all pay off in the end.”

Shelly had an impressive season in 2018. She is second on the team with 172 kills, has 19 service aces and 232

digs this season. She finished 10 of the matches with double-digits in digs.

Her career best for digs was played against Rowan University with 19.

“I contribute my success to my teammates and coaches who have always encouraged and supported me at all times,” Shelly said. “I feel honored being Rookie of the year, it was something that I did not expect but it shows that my hard work and dedication was noticed, nothing is impossible and that you can do anything if you set your mind to it.”

The volleyball team fell to Arcadia in the MAC Tournament Semifinals.

The cross country team is back in action on Nov. 10 for the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships. Griffin and the men’s and women’s teams will compete at DeSales University.
