The search is on for a new women’s ice hockey coach. Isabel Menard’s visa application was denied, which means she will not be returning as the LVC women’s ice hockey coach. Menard contacted the team through email to break the news. “This has been difficult not only on myself being away from all of you but more so on all of you who have had to be without a coach,” Menard said. “You all deserve nothing but the best as I had the extreme pleasure to get to know all of you. You were all incredible to myself, your teammates and the program. I will never forget each of you and you will forever be in my heart.” Since the visa application was not approved, Menard

does not have work authorization in the United States, and the College cannot pay or compensate her for the services she provided. Menard worked with the hockey team throughout October
and November of last year. “The whole team is upset she will not be coming back because just in the six weeks she coached us on the ice, all of us made great improvements,” Nikki Lloyd ’18, team
Florida service trip Brianna Metsger ’19 Staff Writer
The office of Spiritual Life along with interested students and faculty take an annual trip during spring break to participate in community service. The group went to St. Augustine, FL, last year, and they are returning this year to continue their efforts of building houses and aiding the elderly. This year there will be 25 people on the trip. Participants will take a roughly 24-hour train ride to Florida from Philadelphia. Anna Maria Veila Ostrow, an author and survivor of the Holocaust, has graciously donated money to the trip because she wants LVC students to be able to have as many wonderful experienc-
es as she did in her lifetime. A “typical” day will begin with waking up early, grabbing a quick breakfast and heading to help either St. John’s Housing or the Council on Aging. St. John’s Housing is a Florida native version of Habitat for Humanity where volunteers will build or repair houses. The Council on Aging is a program in Florida that does reparative work and spends time with elderly residents. LVC volunteers will end the day with a shower at the local YMCA, dinner and free time to explore St. Augustine, study or get to sleep early. This year’s trip has been planned by Holly Mitman, a junior chemistry and secondary education major with German and music minors. Mitman, a returning member
of the service trip, says that planning the event has been a great experience overall. “I think my favorite part from last year was getting to help out a community that isn’t as fortunate as mine as well as making about 20 new friends,” Mitman said. “This year I’m going because I had such a great time last year. I’m sad that I didn’t go my freshman year.” LVC students who do not participate in the trip are encouraged to attend a sharing session on March 14, where students who volunteered will speak about their experiences. Sign up on Redbook to attend.
