Donald Trump was elected America’s 45th president in the early hours of Wednesday morning. His win over Hillary Clinton will end eight years of Democratic rule in the White House. The Republicans pushed through Democrats’ longstanding states, carrying Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, states that hadn’t voted for a Republican presidential candidate since the 1980s. Trump claimed victories in nearly all of the battleground states including Florida, Ohio and North Carolina. Global stock markets and U.S. stock futures plunged deeply, reflecting investor fear over a Trump presidency. President Barack Obama is planning to meet with Trump
on Thursday. “Ensuring a smooth transition of power is one of the top priorities the President identified at the beginning of the year and a meeting with the President-elect is the next step,” the White House statement said. Trump will take office with Congress expected to be fully under Republican rein. GOP Senate candidates defeated Democratic challengers in key states and are positioned to maintain the majority. Republicans also maintained control of the House. That control means Trump will have authority in appointing Supreme Court justices, which could mean a major shift in the court that could last for decades.
“Donald Trump is going to be our president. We owe him an open mind and the chance to lead.” - Hillary Clinton
