o matter how you say it, Neesh or Nitche, you will find more than just a shopping experience here.

I entered the store with note book in hand, ready to do a simple interview with the coďšşowners, Chris and Julie, the general managers of Custom Home Furnishing and Design. The three of us found a cozy corner to sit down to connect and I immediately realized that this was not going to be your typical interview.

My pen hit the paper with a few of their comments and soon I decided to lay it down and just listen. I sat for over an hour and took in their stories of how they give customers an experience when they shop inside. But it’s much more than that. Chris, brought me to tears when she told me the story of a group of 14

women who stop by the store once a week after their chemo treatments to gather at Niche. They fellowship, sip on coffee, and just take in the elements of the store. When you look around at this beautifully decorated store, you can feel your blood pressure start to drop, your breathing slows, and you find its therapy taking hold.

Chris, a retired school teacher, has found a “new passion in the next chapter of her life,” as she describes it. Her passion goes into every detail of the store. A lot of the products you see in Niche help with various charitable organizations. I can just tell that she continues to give back even after closing the doors of her classroom.

I know personally, I have spent countless hours on websites and searching the internet looking for that perfect coastal look for my own home. Julie, an ECU interior design graduate, says with a smile, “Bringing in elements of living at the coast turns any house into a home.” I can tell she loves her job. She blends beautiful Custom Home Furniture and layers it with Niche to make a perfect collaboration for anyone to enjoy for years to come.

SAVOR THIS SOUTHERN FAVORITE ANY TIME OF DAY:

SHRIMP & GRITS

C O OK I NG I NSTRUCT IO NS:

Bring chicken stock to a boil. Add grits. Cook for 18 minutes.

Stir often as mixture cooks.

Fry your chopped up bacon in a pan till done but still tender. Add in shallots and garlic and keep cooking for 3 more minutes—ahhh— smell that aroma! Spoon the bacon mixture out of pan. Reduce the pan’s heat to low and keep that bacon grease warm.

Add the cream cheese and butter to the grits and turn it down to low. Stir till it’s creamy and well mixed. Add salt and pepper, then your bacon/garlic/shallots mixture. Mix it all in and let it sit for about 8 minutes, covered.

Turn up your bacon grease pan to medium/high. Once up to temperature, add the shrimp. Sprinkle in the paprika, salt and pepper and cook for about 3 minutes, stirring constantly.

Fill

bowls with grits. Then, scoop the cooked shrimp on top each bowl. Drizzle a little of the bacon pan grease for some extra Southern flavor!

Makes 1 IN G R E D IE N TS: 1 cup stone-ground grits 4 oz cream cheese 36 oz (4 1/2 cups) chicken stock 8 strips of bacon, cut into 1” segments 3 small shallots, chopped 2 lbs jumbo shrimp peeled 3 tablespoons butter 1 garlic clove, chopped 1 /2 teaspoon paprika 1 green onion, chopped Pinch of black pepper Sea salt to taste
