Nobility is the new luxury

T

he thrill of each new issue does not go away, in spite of the fact that this is already the 116th. I am excitedly writing again to you, our dear readers, and I am keen to share something, as it seems to me, important, which can stir a response in the soul of each of you. Perhaps our regular readers have noticed that all interviews end with our trademark question: "What is luxury for you?".

And over the 23 years since the launch of the magazine, we have heard many different, sometimes unexpected, but still very similar answers. Time, health, a way to feel successful, a sign that life has worked out, and even just the opportunity to be alone - for some of us this is luxury.

And although I partly agree with all our heroes, today for the first time I want to answer this question myself. I grew up on films and books about kindness and courage, about valour, honour and generosity. About true friendship and great love. I am sure that regardless of generation, country and nationality in childhood, we all read with gusto the books about such heroes who certainly demonstrated the main qualities of fearless knights. For some, such were the valiant, loyal to duty and homeland Musketeers, for others - the romantic and sincere Lizzie Bennett. My dad, for example, in childhood dreamed of being like the strong spirit, the outstanding mind, the noble avenger with a kind soul Edmond Dantes, and in many ways, I must say, he succeeded… Château d'If or its analogues here, as you can understand, were not needed. My mum read Chekhov, admiring the bright characters of his heroes - so different, but invariably distinguished by dignity, devotion and honour.

And I loved all of them, but most of all - the old black and white films of the "golden age" of Hollywood or our own, in which much more often than today they devoted more time to the soul and to meaning than to cool special effects.

But in the end, all children become adults and forget the idols of childhood, and with them the desire to be like them goes. But what was I talking about? Oh yes, what is luxury to me? To meet in every new or old acquaintance at least some of the features that those wonderful heroes from my favourite books and films possess; to try to be a hero for someone… And, of course, a special luxury - not to have the need to communicate with someone who is at least somewhat similar to Lady De Winter or one of the many traitors from King Lear, to Gordon Gekko performed by the unsurpassed Michael Douglas or the lackey Yasha from

Chekhov's Cherry Orchard. Generosity is a new luxury that only a few, the most free and independent, the strongest and most fortunate, can afford. Generosity in everything: in games, in sport, in business, no matter how strange it may sound. Absolute generosity is the most precious luxury today. I am happy to see the most worthy representatives of business, art and sports on the cover of our magazine. And by the way, we are happy to introduce to you the Honorary Member of our Editorial Board, the founder of the Monte Carlo Polo Club and the captain of the Polo Monte Carlo team, Mr. Francesco Mitrano. A generous representative of one of the most beautiful and luxurious sports. We are proud of the friends and partners of our magazine and are inspired by creating for you on every page the image of true luxury, whatever it means to each individual!

rcher Aviation became the first manufacturer of electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft.

Archer Maker has 12 blades, half of which provide vertical takeoff and landing, 12 propellers located on the transverse wing struts. In the front block, there are six five-bladed propellers, capable of changing position from horizontal during takeoff to vertical to ensure flight "on the wing". The rear row has fixed struts with two-blade propellers - this allows them to be disabled during horizontal flight, fixed in line with the struts. This solution reduces aerodynamic drag. In this configuration, the Archer has a top speed of 241 km/h. At the rear of the fuselage is a V-shaped tail unit. The electric motors are powered by a battery pack divided into six autonomous cells. Each cell feeds a separate pair of propellers, which makes it possible to land the Archer if most of the elements fail. The device produces noise at the level of 45 decibels - this is comparable to the noise in a library. Low noise level is one of the first factors of interest to investors. The first order for 200 air taxis came from United Airlines. It will be a fast, economical, and clean way to get to hubs.

r. Bekshta, we know that design build is the original specialization of Bekshta since its foundation in 2009 in Vilnius. The business model by Bekshta is all about one project, one contract, and one responsibility. You are the first company to introduce this approach to the Russian market, successfully adapting your Baltic experience. Design build is for those who are used to getting results maximum quickly and efficiently. Please tell us about the key techniques of Bekshta that transform a grand project from paper sketches into a stately contemporary architectural masterpiece.

We have been practicing this approach in the Baltics for 5-6 years. I was inspired by the USA experience, when management, design and construction in one single project result in optimum time and financial saving. When a close-knit team works on one project with a specific goal, this leads to the best result.

Previously, many were involved in the construction process, but closer to 2010, the rhythm of business life accelerated dramatically, people began to especially value personal time, then a new unique service appeared.

The essence of the service is that one company can provide a high-quality product and give a well-planned schedule of work execution and, most importantly, ensure its successful implementation. From the beginning of the agreement to the visit to the construction site, the meetings are quite intensive, until we finally agree on the project: on average it should be 10-15 meetings. But the preparatory stage itself is handled by our employees, which helps to ensure a high level of service.

T

he 1940 BMW 328 Roadster presents a bit of an automotive mystery, its rare Touring of Milan bodywork was constructed using the Superleggera (super lightweight) method with a design in keeping with the Auto Avio Costruzioni sports racer – Enzo Ferrari’s first foray into car construction. These factors likely mean the car you see was one of the first special Touring bodied cars built for BMW, it’s thought that just five or six prototype 328 BMW-chassis cars were constructed by Touring of Milan in early 1939 before the outbreak of WWII. It’s a car that put BMW at the very top of the sports car world in Europe in the mid to late 1930s.

The secret to the success was down to – weight and power. The designers Rudolf Schleicher and Fritz Fiedler created a lightweight tubular frame with two longitudinal tubes that had an A-frame shape when viewed from above – the rear being wider than the front.

This allowed the independent front suspension to be fitted, and accommodated the live axle leaf spring rear.

THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE

Powering the watch was one of the biggest challenges for the Emergency II. This was largely due to the atypical current draw required by the dual transmitters. After considerable research, Breitling found that the ideal solution was to employ a rechargeable battery which is able to deliver more power than a standard battery.

nside the Breitling Emergency II is the Super Quartz TM precision movement and built-in Personal Emergency Radar Beacon (PARM). After extending the two antennas built into the watch, the microsensor begins to transmit a signal at two frequencies: 121.5 MHz - the International analog frequency for search and rescue services, and 406 MHz - the digital frequency for the Cospas-Sarsat satellite emergency alert. At the frequency of 50 seconds, the transmitter transmits a signal for satellites for 0.44 seconds and a signal for rescue services every 2.25 seconds for 0.75 seconds.

U

illiam, how was the idea of such an extraordinary approach to food and fashion born?

Initially, we planned to create a completely different restaurant here; we developed its design and even bought furniture. Two years ago I had a trip to Milan, and one of the evenings I spent at a famous Milan restaurant. During dinner, a picture of what a restaurant should be like appeared in front of my eyes: the concept of a restaurant was simply born out of nowhere. I immediately wrote it down, and then met with my partners and told them about my plans. Not a trace remained of the old project.

We started doing everything anew. There was some kind of illumination, God's blessing, or maybe it was the champagne I drank that evening. (Smiles.)

Here one can find Italian classic and contemporary menus. What were you guided by in choosing dishes?

The dishes of my creation also take an important place in the menu. As in the atelier tailors create clothes, we create our own dishes in our gastronomic atelier. New dishes, new tastes, new emotions are born here. All together form an unusual composition of food, fashion and emotions.

Sartoria Lamberti has a beautiful tradition of presenting the guests with handkerchief with their initials. This is the only place in Moscow where you can get such an unusual present.

The excellent idea came from my partner Alexey Alekminsky. At first, our guests were very surprised, but then they felt in love with the tradition, they were very pleased to receive such a gift, and now at events they almost always ask about a personal handkerchief with initials. By the way, we have prepared another surprise for our guests, but what exactly I won't say. Before the pandemic, everything was much simpler. Now many people are afraid even of just going outside, let alone a visit to a restaurant.

We also attracted a large number of tourists. Now the renovation work of the hotel has started, however we are still working, and then we'll see what will happen. I'm sure there will be the new good times.

You probably have a lot of regular celebrity guests.

We know that even Kate Moss has been here.

Yes, you are right. We are very pleased with the fact that the restaurant was particularly loved by famous and super media people. There were also celebrities from abroad, but I would like not to mention them by name. In my opinion, that would not be right. One evening we hosted the people whose names appear in Forbes. It was very exciting to see them all together at one event.

It is very difficult to emphasize any of the projects, as each of them is dear to me in its own way. I have put a piece of my soul into them. As parents love all their children equally, so I consider all my projects precious and dear.

Is there any dish you don't like and you don't want to cook?

I don't like to use a slicer while peeling fruits or vegetables. This is something terrible. (Smiles.) It's always a pleasure for me to cook; maybe the only thing I don't like to cook is a special dish that is cooked only in the region where I was born. It's called Bacala. This is salted and dried cod. In Spain, it is called Bacalhau - simply salted fish. In my region, it is dried under the sun, while in Norway and Sweden it is smoked.

To be honest, it doesn't smell very good. Actually, I don’t like it; however I should mention that this fish is delicious.

Would you be able to exchange Moscow for some other city? If yes, which city would it be?

I prefer to work where there is a lot of dynamics, where modern life is in full swing. Besides Moscow, I also love New York and London. In general, all big

cities in some way are similar to each other. I got used to and fell in love with Moscow. Interestingly enough, with the passage of time and with a degree of familiarity, a large city becomes small. You mostly visit the same places and again you want something new. Moscow is an extraordinary city, even if someday I live in another city, I will miss it very much. But now there is no desire to change anything. If it were necessary to change my place of living, I would be happy to live in New York, but only for 6 months a year, and the remaining 6 months I would prefer to spend in Moscow. Maybe in 10-15 years I will certainly want to live in some quiet corner of the world, on the seashore. Everything flows, everything changes.

(Thinking briefly.) In 10 years I will live by the sea and one day I will wait for your visit. A large sumptuous table will be set for my friends: a barbecue and my signature pasta will certainly be served on this wonderful day.

The new project is already at the final stage of implementation. Just need to set the opening date.

I won't tell you anything now, but I would love to point out that the new venue is located in the central district of Moscow, in a historic building. We are also working on a second project. We are currently conducting a lot of negotiations and not only in Moscow. After Sartoria, it is very difficult to create something new, because this is the place where such a special atmosphere reigns: close attention was paid to every last detail. We also pay maximum attention to the new projects. In fact, there are no trifles for us - everything is important, everything is paramount. This is an unprecedented concept.

There has never been a similar locale in Moscow or anywhere else. The only thing I can say now is that the concept is based on a circle of history: the period beginning about 6000 years ago and ending in the present day.

What is a luxury item for you?

Of course, there was a period in my life when it was important for me to have an expensive watch, phone, clothes. Over several years, my priorities have changed and now I am not particularly interested in material things. Today, the inner, spiritual state and personal growth are of great importance to me. Communication with people has become an exquisite luxury for me, I like to observe them, delving into the essence of their character in order to find a special approach to each of them. I think I will never lose interest in it.

Может быть, через 10-15 лет мне захочется жить в каком-нибудь тихом уголке, на берегу моря. Все течет, все изменяется. (Немого подумав.) Через 10 лет я буду жить у моря, и в один прекрасный день буду ждать вас в гости. Будет накрыт большой роскошный стол для моих друзей, и обязательно будут поданы барбекю и моя авторская паста. Спасибо за приглашение, с удовольствием приедем! А какие планы на ближайшее будущее? Новый проект находится на финальной стадии осуществления. Нам осталось лишь назначить дату открытия. Пока всего не могу рассказать, но отмечу, что новое заведение находится в центральном округе Москвы, в историческом здании. Мы также работаем над вторым проектом. В настоящее время мы ведем множество переговоров, и не только в Москве. После Sartoria очень трудно создать чтото новое, потому что здесь царит такая особая атмосфера: было уделено пристальное внимание каждой самой крохотной детали. Новым проектам мы также уделяем максимальное внимание. На самом деле, для нас нет мелочей – для нас все важно, все первостепенно. Это беспрецедентный концепт. Ни в Москве, ни в каком-либо другом месте подобного заведения еще не было. he Mars Conqueror Mk3 Fighter is the first serial model of watch (limited to 8 pieces) with space functions from Konstantin Chaykin. The silhouette of the watch resembles Darth Vader's helmet. The design is important, but is not the main component. The central hands show the current time, on the upper dial is the time of the second time zone in the UTC format, the dial at the 6 o’clock position shows Martian time. Two winders are located at the bottom of the case. The "engine" of the model is the mechanism of the Raketa watch factory of the early 80s which was perfected by Chaykin, and the winding mechanism was converted into a control system with two winders located on the front cover of the case, as in a real aviation watch.
