Costruito nel 1834, nello stesso luogo in cui 2000 anni prima sorgeva la villa romana dell’imperatore Augusto, il Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria appartiene fin dalla sua fondazione alla famiglia Fiorentino.

L’albergo si compone di tre edifici di ispirazione architettonica diversa: La Vittoria, il più antico (1834), così chiamato dal nome di Vittoria Rispoli, bisnonna degli attuali proprietari; La Rivale (1882); La Favorita, bizzarro chalet in stile alpino realizzato tra le due ville agli inizi del ‘900.

Grazie alla sua posizione centrale e allo splendido panorama della costiera che si gode dalle sue terrazze, l’albergo ha da sempre esercitato un enorme fascino su artisti, scrittori, filosofi e aristocratici, abituati a trascorrere i mesi invernali nel clima mite del Mediterraneo.

Sfogliando le pagine del libro d’oro degli ospiti si incontrano molti nomi prestigiosi: Otto von Bismarck, Luigi II di Baviera (1858), il Principe di Galles (1874), ritornato poi come re di Inghilterra (1910), l’Imperatrice Elisabetta (Sissi) d’Austria, la granduchessa Caterina di Russia, la regina Vittoria di Svezia, Richard Strauss, il tenore italiano Enrico Caruso e - tra i più attuali - la principessa Margaret d’Inghilterra, Luciano Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli, Uto Ughi, Lucio Dalla, Barbra Streisand. Ma non dimentichiamo Sofia Loren, Jack Lemmon, Brian de Palma, Pierce Brosnan. Alcune delle lussuose suite sono state ribattezzate proprio con questi nomi celebri: la Suite Margaret e la Suite Caruso ne sono un esempio.

L’atmosfera della Suite Caruso 448, arredata con oggetti appartenuti al tenore, come il pianoforte, lo scrittoio, alcune lettere e fotografie, ha ispirato nel 1986 il cantante italiano Lucio Dalla, fino ad indurlo a comporre la celebre canzone “Caruso”.

Oltre alla Suite 448, altre camere sono state personalizzate: la Suite Aurora 445 prende il nome dall’affresco del soffitto ed ha ospitato Sofia Loren nel 1986 nel film “Qualcosa di biondo”, girato proprio sulle terrazze dell’albergo, mentre la Suite Margaret 205 è stata così ribattezzata dopo che vi soggiornò l’omonima principessa inglese.

Di grande interesse è la Suite Pompei 148, realizzata in puro stile pompeiano, con affreschi di corse di bighe, cherubini, anfore e altri tipici elementi della Roma imperiale.

d’Inverno, prezioso spazio al pian terreno con “grillages” di legno interrotti da cesti di fiori; la Sala Lettura, luminosa stanza dal soffitto affrescato dove si possono osservare fotografie, ritagli di giornale e autografi, raccolti in un album, che testimoniano il soggiorno di ospiti celebri e non; la Sala Musica, con rigogliose piante e un elegante arredamento d’inizio 1900 realizzato dagli artigiani sorrentini nella tradizione dello “Stile Smith”. O la monumentale Sala per le colazioni Vittoria, dal pavimento in legno lucidato, dai soffitti a volta dipinti nell’Ottocento e dalle decorazioni murali anni Trenta che ricreano un’ambientazione di grande eleganza “fin-de-siècle”.

Senza dimenticare il parco ricco di resti archeologici romani: colonne, elementi decorativi in marmo, un tunnel di collegamento con il porto e una piscina rinvenuta presso la piscina dell’albergo.

AFFILIAZIONI E RICONOSCIMENTI Il Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria è affiliato ai “Locali Storici d’Italia”, un’associazione che raccoglie i “Musei dell’ospitalità” ovvero caffè, ristoranti e alberghi storici, aventi una tradizione consolidata e un’elevata qualità di servizi.

L’Associazione è patrocinata dal Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali.

E’ inserito nella classifica Gold List del Condé Nast Traveler e nel World’s Best Hotels della Travel+Leisure. E’ certificato per il Sistema di Gestione della Qualità (ISO 9001) ed Ambientale (ISO 14001) da DNV (Det Norske Veritas).

Orangerie poolside restaurant Aperto da maggio a settembre, dalle 12.00 alle 16.00, propone prelibate grigliate di carne e pesce accompagnate da una varietà di insalate fresche, oltre alla tradizionale pizza servita nelle varie soluzioni. “811”.

INCENDIO CH IAMAR E I L “9” O “822” Diamo ora alcune indicazioni da seguire scrupolosamente, sia per segnalare un incendio da Lei avvistato, sia per la protezione e sicurezza Sua, dei Suoi familiari ed amici.

Precauzioni: • Esaminare bene la pianta affissa dietro la porta della camera. Individuare l’uscita di emergenza più vicina e sapere come raggiungerla.

• Esaminare la serratura della porta (provando ad aprirla anche al buio).

• Contare il numero di porte tra la propria e l’uscita di emergenza.

• Informarsi dove sono dislocati gli estintori e le manichette antincendio.

• Non fumare a letto.

• Tenere i fiammiferi fuori dalla portata dei bambini.

• Spegnere le sigarette prima di lasciare la stanza o prima di andare a dormire.

• Non usare elettrodomestici.

Se si scopre un incendio: • Dare l’allarme rompendo il vetro del segnale d’allarme antincendio più vicino con il gomito o una scarpa.

• Avvisare immediatamente il centralino chiamando il “9” o l’“822” indicando il proprio nome e cognome, numero della stanza dalla quale si sta chiamando ed il tipo di emergenza, eventuali ferite o persone coinvolte. Se muniti di telefono cellulare, chiamare i Vigili del Fuoco al numero “115”.

• Chiudere tutte le porte attorno all’ubicazione dell’incendio, se è possibile.

• Prendere la chiave della stanza (se è possibile).

• Non chiudersi nel bagno.

• Non tentare di fare i bagagli.

• Avviarsi verso l’uscita di sicurezza più vicina. Non usare gli ascensori.

Se si sente l’allarme antincendio: • Stare calmi.

Se si sente un suono lungo continuato di sirena d’allarme: • Tenere con sé la chiave della camera (se possibile).

• Prima di aprire la porta, controllare la temperatura col dorso della mano. Se è tiepida, aprire la porta leggermente. Se è calda o si nota la presenza di fiamme o fumo denso, chiudere la porta immediatamente e restare nella stanza.

• In presenza di fumo, camminare abbassati. Se è necessario, avanzare carponi.

• Dirigersi verso l’uscita di sicurezza più vicina ed evacuare l’edificio seguendo le indicazioni delle vie d’uscita.

• Non usare gli ascensori.

• Se l’uscita è bloccata per qualsiasi ragione, usare l’uscita alternativa oppure ritornare nella propria stanza, è il posto più sicuro dove si può restare.

Se si resta intrappolati in camera: • Mantenere la calma.

• Chiamare il numero d’emergenza “9” oppure “822”, comunicare il proprio nome e cognome, il numero di camera dalla quale si sta chiamando, il tipo di emergenza e le eventuali ferite e persone coinvolte. Se muniti di telefono cellulare, chiamare i Vigili del Fuoco al numero “115”.

• Spegnere l’aria condizionata.

• Non chiudersi nel bagno.

• Riempire la vasca da bagno con acqua (come riserva d’acqua).

• Bagnare gli asciugamani o le lenzuola ed infilarle sotto la porta per evitare che il fumo entri dalla medesima.

• Se il fumo entra in camera, abbassarsi e proteggersi naso e bocca con un fazzoletto che possa fare da filtro.

• Se l’aria diventa soffocante potrebbe essere necessario aprire la finestra. Bussare alla porta o fare segnali dalla finestra alle persone sottostanti per attirare l’attenzione. Non aprire la porta se il fumo e le fiamme provengono da un piano sottostante.

Se si necessita di un’assistenza speciale: • Se ci fossero portatori di handicap, avvertire il ricevimento al momento della prenotazione e nel momento del check-in in albergo.

Ricordare: • Poche persone muoiono carbonizzate. La maggior parte muore per il fumo, i gas velenosi ed il panico. Se si nota la presenza di fumo in camera, si consiglia di restare sempre abbassati verso il pavimento.

Potrebbe non accadere mai: • Le auguriamo di non trovarsi mai in una di queste situazioni. Comunque, si deve sempre essere preparati a qualsiasi pericolo, essere diligenti, notare le uscite di sicurezza ed esaminare le procedure d’emergenza di qualsiasi palazzo cui si accede.

The Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria was built in the year 1834, on the very same spot where the Roman Emperor Augustus had his villa. The hotel has been owned by the Fiorentino family for five generations.

The hotel comprises three buildings each of different architectural inspiration: to the south stands the oldest villa, La Vittoria (1834), called after Mrs Vittoria Rispoli, great grandmother of the present owners; to the north, La Rivale (1882); and between these two, La Favorita, bizarre Swiss chalet built at the beginning of the 20th century.

Owing to its central position and the spectacular views over the Bay of Naples from its terraces, the hotel has always attracted artists, writers, philosophers and noblemen, who used to come here to spend the Winter months in the mildness of the Mediterranean climate.

Over the years its staff has welcomed many of the world’s celebrities and the visitors’ book reads like Who’s Who Otto von Bismarck, Louis II of Bavaria (1858), the Prince of Wales (1874) who also returned as King of England (1910), the Empress Elizabeth (Sissi) of Austria, the Grand Duchess Catherine of Russia, Queen Victoria of Sweden and more recently Princess Margaret of England. Actors and actresses stayed at the Excelsior Vittoria, among others Sofia Loren, Jack Lemmon, Brian De Palma, Pierce Brosnan as well as giants of music like Richard Strauss, Luciano Pavarotti, Uto Ughi, Lucio Dalla, Andrea Bocelli, Barbra Streisand or the famous Italian tenor Enrico Caruso who spent here his last days of life in the spring of 1921 staying in the Suite 448, which today bears its name.

The Suite is kept in the very same style as it was when the famous Italian tenor lodged here and there are endless storics about his stay like the piano, the writing board, some letters and photographs.

The memory of Caruso has attracted other singers to Sorrento, like Lucio Dalla, who inspired by the atmosphere, wrote a very successful song entitled “Caruso” while staying at the hotel. Besides the Suite (nr. 448), there is a generous selection of rooms with a variety of features: the Aurora Suite (nr. 445), named after its frescoed ceilings, hosted Sofia Loren in 1986 in the film “Qualcosa di biondo” (Aurora) filmed on the hotel’s terraces, while the Margaret Suite (nr. 205) was named after princess Margaret’s stay.

Very much in demand is the Pompeii Suite (nr. 148), in Pompeian style, with frescoes featuring chariots, cherubs, amphora and other typical elements of the Roman Empire.

Every single spot of the hotel offers the guest the atmosphere of a by-gone era: the Winter Garden, precious space on the ground floor with wood “grillages” and beautiful flower baskets; the Reading Room, bright room with the frescoed ceiling where you can observe photographs, paper cuttings and autographs, preserved in an album, to testify the sojourn of many celebrities as well as common people; the Music Room, with its lush plants and elegant furniture in “Smith Style” made by the local craftsmen. Or the majestic Vittoria breakfast room, with its waxed parquet and original decorated ceilings of “fin-de-siècle”.

Not to forget is the park rich of archaeological Roman remains: columns, decorative marble elements, a gallery connecting to the harbour and a pool, discovered next to the main pool of the hotel.

SERVICES FIRE DIAL “9” OR “822”

Precautions: For your safety and the safety of others, may we offer the following advice: • Study the fire notice behind the door of your room, locate the nearest exit and know how to get there.

• Familiarise yourself on how to open and unlock your door (also in the dark).

• Count the number of doors between your door and your emergency exit.

• Know where fire Extinguishers/Fire Hose Reels are located.

• Do not smoke in bed.

• Please keep matches out of children reach.

• Extinguish cigarettes before you leave the room or retire for the night.

• Do not use cooking appliances.

If you discover a fire: • Activate the nearest fire alarm by breaking the glass panel with your elbow or shoe.

• Immediately notify the Telephone Operator by dialling “9” or “822” and give him your name, your room number and explain the type of emergency; if possible inform the people in the adjacent rooms. If you have a mobile phone, call the firemen by dialling “115”.

• If possible close all doors around the fire area.

• Do not shut yourself up in the bathroom.

• Take your room key (if possible).

• Do not attempt to pack belongings.

• Leave the building by the nearest fire exit. Do not use the elevator.

If you hear the fire alarm: • Stay calm.

If you hear continuous alarm, please evacuate the building.

• Keep your room key (if possible).

• Before opening the door, test the temperature with the back of your hand. If it is cool, open the door slowly. If there is heat, fire or thick smoke, close the door immediately and stay in your room.

• If there is smoke in the corridor, stay as low as possible when moving around. If necessary, crawl on your hands and knees.

• Go to the nearest fire exit and leave the building following the safety evacuation path.

• Do not use elevators.

• If your exit is blocked for any reason, use the alternative exit or return to your room, it is the safest place to be.

If you are trapped in your room: • Stay calm.

• Call our emergency line on “9” or “822”, give your name and room number and explain that you are trapped in your room. If you have a mobile phone, call the firemen by dialling “115”.

• Turn off the air conditioning.

• Do not shut yourself up in the bathroom.

• Fill the bathtub with water (as a water reserve).

• Place wet towels and sheets around door gaps and air vents to prevent smoke from coming into the room.

• If smoke comes into the room, keep low and place a cloth over nose and mouth to act as a filter.

• As a last resort if the air becomes too smoky, it may be necessary to open the window.

Beat at the door or signal the people below from the window to attract their attention.

Do not open if smoke or flames are rising outside from a lower floor.

If you require special assistance: • In case of a personal handicap, advise the hotel reservation on booking and the hotel reception personnel upon check-in.

Remember: • Most fatalities occur from inhalation of smoke, not from flames. Always stay low to the ground if there is any smoke present at all. Never use the elevators.

It may never happen to you: • Hopefully you will never need to implement this advice. However, you should always be aware of the unexpected, be diligent and note the exits and emergency procedures of any high-rise building which you enter.

Your personal security: • Although the style of lock on your guest room door may vary from hotel to hotel, most lock-types are fitted with an additional security bolt. This bolt is activated from inside your room. It is recommended that you use this feature whenever you are in your room, especially upon retiring.

• You are in a building that has been restored under stringent fire safety standards with advanced fire prevention systems. All bedrooms, public corridors and back of house areas are equipped with smoke detectors and fire fighting equipment.

• Before you leave the room, make sure balcony and main door are locked and secured.

• Do not keep valuables in the room. Please use the safe in your room. The hotel does not take any responsibility for any loss of belongings.

• Do not reveal name of the hotel or your room number to strangers.

• Do not leave your luggage or belongings unattended in the public area of the hotel.

RESTAURANTS The Bosquet Restaurant offers specialities of the regional, national and international cuisine, revised in the flavours and coupling with a personal and innovative touch by our Chef. The warm welcome, the quality and genuineness of the food have been recognized by The American Academy of Hospitality Sciences with the famous award “International Five Star Diamond”.

Menus change according to ingredients in season; special menus are created for weddings, gala dinners, events. Among our specialities, there are the scialatielli, a particular local pasta, served with a sauce of aubergines and mozzarella cheese; risotto with Sorrento citrus fruits; the desserts prepared by our Confectioners, such as the famous Delizie al Limone, the Tiramisù and the Pastiera. The wine list is good value and includes about 200 labels of Italian and foreign wines, sparkling wines and champagnes. Our Region, Campania, is of course well represented with its more renowned wines, as well as Tuscany and France.
