KATJA JENSEN

In a world that moves too fast and speaks too loud, photographer Katja Jensen has carved out a quiet, reverent space where horses roam free and their unspoken language is captured in raw, timeless frames Raised on a farm and rooted in a deep sensitivity to the world around her, Katja's journey into equestrian fine art photography is more than a career it’s a calling With a camera in one hand and her heart tuned to the rhythm of hooves and wind, she travels the globe to document horses in their most natural, soulful states Her work doesn’t just show horses it honors them

EARLY YEARS

Can you tell us about your early experiences growing up on a farm and how that shaped your connection with horses?

As many others who find peace and solace with animals, I was an introverted child I didn’t seem to understand or fit into our society The world wanted me to toughen up, and stop feeling as much as I did

The horses became my escape Simply because they didn’t demand that I changed They accepted me for who I was If I had grown up in the city, I’m afraid I would have lost my soft heart The horses helped me retain that ability to feel everything a little bit deeper

On the farm there was a stillness that I needed It helped me discover how magic is often in the little things that we tend to forget and overlook in a busy world Horses don’t live in that same busy world They’re present right here, right now

What sparked your interest in photography at such a young age was it the horses, the camera, or both?

Without a doubt both The horses were the physical subjects of my passion, and the camera provided the ability to capture those moments as I saw them It was the perfect combination

Besides spending most of my time outside in the fields, I was also quite interested in programming, coding and such From an early age I had fun creating websites and editing photos, which definitely helped me further develop my skills in this area and helped keep things interesting and fun

ARTISTIC VISION & STYLE

Your preference is to photograph horses in their natural environment what draws you to that style?

For many years I photographed horses with their humans, and I loved capturing that special bond. However as I’ve ventured farther into the Fine Art side of photography, I find that keeping the images minimalistic and timeless, makes them more artistic than personal In a world full of opinions in the equestrian space, I strip away tack and human-made settings to create images that speak universally to every horse lover no matter their background or discipline

How do you think photographing horses in the wild or semi-wild state captures their essence differently than in a more staged setting?

Because this is where they came from Horses weren’t made for concrete roads and wooden fences. Taking them back to nature in my photos feels like the greatest way of honoring them and bringing their true nature back into the light Stripping my images down to the very core, helps create stronger photographs and messages.

Do you have a favorite location or type of landscape to photograph horses in?

I gave this a lot of thought, and I don’t think so This is a part of what drives me to visit so many parts of the world; I really enjoy exploring different regions and landscapes It always baffles me how well horses fit into all of them

PROCESS & APPROACH

Can you walk us through your typical process for planning a photo shoot from scouting locations to working with the horses?

Honestly, this question is always a little tricky because I rarely start with a fixed plan. My process is much more intuitive Sometimes it's a movie frame that sparks something, other times a piece of music, a fleeting mood, or even the feeling of a landscape I’ve dreamt about When traveling I always research the country, culture and landscape beforehand My wish before traveling is often the opportunity to get the horses in the landscapes that represent the country best From there I research horse breeders, owners and wild horse locations to see what contacts I can reach out to.

What’s your approach to capturing emotion or personality in your horse portraits?

When it comes to working with the horses, I adapt to their energy in the moment. I observe, I wait, and I let them lead That’s when the magic happens when the horse is allowed to be itself, and I’m simply there to witness and translate that into an image

How do you build trust with the horses you ' re photographing, especially if they’re not familiar with you?

When I photograph horses in photo halters, and we ask them to stand or move in certain places of our choice, I’m highly alert to how the horse is reacting to what we ask of them Keeping the session low stress and an enjoyable experience for the horse, reflects in the photos and in their expressions especially. Being out in the pastures or open areas where the horses roam free, I find that they often are quite curious about me Especially since I just sit down and observe, and don’t intend to handle them in any way. Most horses quickly realize that I’m no threat, and are happy to let me join them.

Letting the horse be first of all We tend to want to control much of our horses’ behaviors, but by doing this we also kill many opportunities for them to show their personality I rarely aim for the classic portrait with the horse standing; ears perked forward and an alert expression There are so many missed opportunities in just observing – giving them the freedom to express themselves however that may look In terms of photography, light plays a crucial role. Natural light is my only tool here I try to aim for morning or evening light, and avoid harsh, direct sunlight Overcast and rainy days can add to a more moody atmosphere as well.

How has traveling influenced your photography and your creative direction?

Travel cracks your heart and mind wide open While the main focus is always the horses and the landscapes, I’ve also learned so much about different cultures and the people within them I grew up in a small village, where people can seem small-minded and intolerant. Traveling shows so many different sides of life, that can’t help but creep into my visions and photography as well.

The ponies helped me realize that I wasn’t meant to be living this life for others.

Visiting Canada I felt the rush of open prairies and witnessed the harsh but beautiful lives of multi-generational ranchers Portugal was deeply rooted and influenced by its history, both bad and good I saw some of the finest horsemanship and a feel I’ve rarely met anywhere else.

REFLECTIONS & VISION

Do you have a favorite image you ’ ve ever taken one that holds a special meaning or story?

My image “Ancient Survival” will forever hold a special place in my heart On this trip I captured photos that I had dreamed of for years, but more importantly I got crystal clear on where I wanted my photography to take me The ponies helped me realize that I wasn’t meant to be living this life for others

What’s next for you are there any upcoming travels, projects, or ideas you ’ re excited to pursue?

I’m revisiting a country later this year that feels like an old friend of mine, but I can’t reveal much more right now. I have high hopes for the trip, and expect it to become one of my wildest yet In the coming months I will also be finishing and releasing my upcoming collections “Hidden Heartlands” which will feature the hardy Connemara ponies and majestic Irish Cob horses of Ireland

Katja Jensen’s photography invites us to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with the grace of the natural world through the eyes of the horse Her lens captures more than silhouettes in misty fields; it reveals stories of spirit, freedom, and the quiet strength that binds horse and human As she continues to explore hidden heartlands and wild corners of the earth, one thing remains certain: Katja’s work will keep reminding us of what it means to feel deeply, see clearly, and honor the untamed.

Spring Event

On April 11, 2025, as the sun dipped behind the coastal community of Encinitas, California, a select group of equestrian professionals gathered at

Fox Point Farms, a visionary urban farm community dedicated to organic and sustainable living The setting a blend of agricultural roots and forwardthinking development provided the perfect backdrop for an evening centered on collaboration, creativity, and the future of equestrian design.

Sponsored by Wade Weissmann Architecture and American Stalls, the panel explored the theme: Building Synergy: Navigating Collaborative Success Between Architects, Builders, and Product Manufacturers.

Moderated by Lindsay Hunter, founder of the Network and Principal Interior Designer of Hunter Design, the panel featured four industry leaders, each offering a unique perspective on building exceptional equestrian spaces: Wade Weissmann, celebrated architect known for designing enduring, emotionally resonant estates and barns

Yash Balasaria, CEO of American Stalls, renowned for luxury barn outfitting and precision craftsmanship. Lindsey Vorwith of MANE Real Estate, a leading specialist in equestrian property sales

Lane Clarke, international Grand Prix show jumper and trainer, contributing a performance-focused rider’s lens. Together, they explored what it truly takes to bring a client’s dream to life from the first sketch to the final stall door

Yash Balasaria spoke about the importance of focusing on the clients’ happiness and satisfaction, and the safety of the horses Lindsey Vorwith explained how thoughtful, wellintegrated design not only enhances usability but also significantly increases market value and appeal to discerning buyers.

Lane Clarke offered practical insight from his experience as a top-level competitor, emphasizing the critical role that layout, safety, and subtle design features play in supporting both horse and rider performance.

Wade Weissmann delivered one of the evening’s key takeaways: “Successful projects are all about the relationships, and when we ' re all listening to one another, and the professional opinions, that's when you get this synergistic equation of one plus one equals three” The conversation moved seamlessly between inspiration and execution, aesthetics and function. Lindsay Hunter guided the discussion, weaving each viewpoint into a unified message about intentional, collaborative design and the value of partnerships rooted in trust.

The setting of Fox Point Farms, with its commitment to sustainability and community, beautifully echoed the values shared on stage: purpose, quality, and connection

As twilight settled over the urban farm, guests lingered under string lights, continuing conversations over wine and hors d'oeuvres More than just a panel, the evening was a celebration of what’s possible when creative minds come together to elevate the equestrian lifestyle.

EQUIVONT

Jessica@equivont.com

Born and raised in California on the back of a horse, Jessica had the opportunity to move across the country As a working amateur, she began researching options for bringing her horse along with her Where to board? Who to train with? What farrier options were there? Who transports horses across the country?

After spending hours searching on the web, she became frustrated with the outdated, irrelevant information available Existing directories provided a name and a phone number at best and there was no way of telling if this professional was even in business any more After leaving countless voicemails that went unreturned and thumbing through archaic websites, it was obvious there is a huge disconnect between riders and the professionals

In any other service-related industry consumers search online to find out what their options are Whether it be a restaurant, a plumber, or buying a car Why wouldn’t horse people adopt a similar approach?

This experience powered the concept of Equivont Jessica teamed up with Jacki to bring this word-of-mouth industry up to the digital era

BARN TOUR

A SOPHISTICATED HUNTER-JUMPER BARN IN EUSTIS,

FLORIDA

Tucked into the rolling countryside of Eustis, Florida just outside the equestrian epicenter of Ocala this exquisite barn is a masterclass in craftsmanship, functionality, and timeless design. From the moment you arrive, you ’ re greeted by a warm, wood-clad exterior, elegantly framed by arched entryways, quad-pane windows, and handcrafted crossbuck sliding doors that signal the care poured into every inch of this facility

Step inside, and you’ll find a luminous, welcoming interior where tongue-and-groove wood-paneled ceilings, exposed timber trusses, and natural skylights bathe the space in soft, ambient light. Every finish from the iron fixtures to the stone textures is curated with an eye toward balance: rustic charm meets clean, modern sophistication

This project came to life through close collaboration with the client a passionate hunter-jumper rider and the talented team at Thomas J. Mosco Custom Homes, who brought this architectural vision to life with exceptional attention to detail Together, we worked to ensure that the barn not only looked stunning but also elevated safety, comfort, and day-to-day ease for both horses and handlers

CUSTOM EUROPEAN STALL FRONTS WITH SMART FUNCTIONALITY

At the heart of this barn are our custom European Stall Fronts, built in our high European design with graceful arched tops These stall fronts deliver a timeless aesthetic but they’re also packed with functionality:

Mesh-bottom stall doors for optimal airflow and visibility

An ergonomic grilled feed door for easy, aisle-side feeding

Integrated water line access, allowing spigots to be turned on from the aisle to conveniently fill buckets from outside the stall

Each stall system is fabricated from fully welded steel, then finished in a durable powder coat built to withstand both wear and Florida’s high-humidity environment. Every detail, from the custom latches to the curved lines, is designed to enhance daily routines without compromising on beauty

PRIVACY MEETS PEACE OF MIND

Inside each stall, our team installed fully welded privacy partitions, featuring wood infill panels both top and bottom. These walls provide complete visual and physical separation between horses, promoting rest, calmness, and safety especially in a high-performance barn like this one

DUTCH DOORS & WINDOWS BUILT FOR THE FLORIDA CLIMATE

To invite natural light and fresh air throughout the barn, we designed a series of Dutch doors and barn windows, each handcrafted in matching styles These include: Tempered safety glass in a quad-pane layout for elegance and durability

Protective grill guards installed behind the glass to prevent horse contact

All stainless-steel hardware, including non-locking latches and adjustable barrel hinges ideal for longterm use in Florida’s salt-rich air

The Dutch doors are more than just beautiful they’re engineered for ventilation, safety, and ease of use, with swing gates that allow for flexible airflow based on season or weather

ICONIC SLIDING ENTRANCE DOORS

A set of grand sliding barn doors anchors the structure complete with the same quad-pane glass panels above and a bold crossbuck detail below, reminiscent of classic American barns These doors serve as a fitting centerpiece to the facility’s exterior, offering both visual drama and lasting performance

COMFORT FROM THE GROUND UP

Every design choice in this barn supports both horse comfort and human efficiency We were proud to supply two key elements to enhance daily operations:

Our advanced stall mattress system, which offers orthopedic support, improved rest, and faster rehabilitation for horses while also reducing bedding costs and daily maintenance

Our 1 ¾” thick black rubber pavers, installed throughout the aisleways for excellent shock absorption, slip resistance, and sound dampening

Together, these systems promote a quieter, safer, and more efficient environment ideal for both everyday care and performance recovery

DESIGNED FOR LONGEVITY AND LIFESTYLE

This barn is not only built for beauty it’s built to last Every component, from our 304 stainless steel feed doors and hardware, to the fully welded steel and wood finishes, reflects our shared commitment to longevity, safety, and craftsmanship

The wood-paneled ceilings, skylights, and architectural flourishes throughout the structure speak to the artistry of Thomas J. Mosco Custom Homes while our custom American Stalls elements complement that vision with timeless elegance and practical innovation

THIS PROJECT IS A REMINDER OF WHAT’S POSSIBLE WHEN VISION, CRAFTSMANSHIP, AND COLLABORATION COME TOGETHER.

GREAT HOUSES & ESTATES

Rooted in Time: Conor Lynch on the Enduring Grace of ClassicalArchitecture

In a fast-paced world characterized by fleeting trends, Conor Lynch stands as a thoughtful advocate for timeless design As the founder of Great Houses and Estates, an influential platform dedicated to the enduring beauty of classical architecture and rural estate life, Lynch has carved out a unique voice that bridges tradition and modernity With deep reverence for craftsmanship, proportion, and permanence, his work both built and drawn offers a reminder that elegance is not a trend, but a language passed down through generations.

In this conversation, we explore the principles that guide his architecture, the soulful stories behind his evocative pencil drawings, and why the classical tradition continues to resonate in the 21st century especially in the equestrian world.

Whether designing a Georgian stable block or restoring a centuries-old country house, Lynch brings to each project a rare sense of stewardship, civility, and grace.

"These houses are not museums, though their contents might well rival those in national collections. What makes them so special is that they are still homes."
Conor Lynch

Personal Background

What first inspired your fascination with country houses? Was there a particular place, book, or mentor that lit the spark?

I’ve been visiting country houses since I was a child There was something utterly captivating about themtheir eclectic layers, the sense of mystery, and the way they seemed to hold living history within their walls These houses are not museums, though their contents might well rival those in national collections. What makes them so special is that they are still homes There are dogs, children, books left half-read, fires burning in the grate - there’s life, and that life keeps the past alive in a way that no velvet rope ever could There is a sense of continuity and tradition.

A formative figure in this fascination has been Lord Meath of Kilruddery House, whom I’ve come to regard as something of an elective grandfather My own paternal grandfather died when my father was a boy, and my maternal grandfather passed away when I was a child

Lord Meath, with his deep love for the countryside, trees, birds, architecture, and tradition, became a guiding influence He helped deepen my appreciation for estate life - not only its beauty, but its responsibilities

Another influence was the landowner Francis Fulford, whose book Bearing Up I always recommend. It’s a witty, candid account of what it means to run an estate today - the trials, the quirks, and the enduring commitment to a way of life that remains anchored in the land It’s a reminder that these houses are not relics They are dynamic, often difficult, but profoundly human undertakings

Equestrian Lifestyle & Design

Tell us about the Georgian stable block you designed. What traditions inspired it, and what did you want it to express?

The stable block is built in the Georgian tradition, which I believe still holds the greatest elegance and civility I based the overall composition on Palladian principles: a central pedimented block with long symmetrical wings on either side This tripartite form is one of the most enduring in classical architecture, and with good reason - it conveys order, strength, and a quiet grandeur

But beyond architecture, I wanted the building to express something deeper about the equestrian life. Horses are not simply animals we keep - they are animals we share our lives with. They have an immense physical presence, and there’s a kind of nobility in that They are full of character, yet also rather silent I wanted the building to reflect that dignity

The central block houses the tack room and feed room, while the flanking wings hold the stalls The scale of the doors, the generous overhang of the eaves, the rhythm of the openings each was carefully considered to feel calm, timeless, and in proportion with the horses themselves This is not a pastiche or a nostalgic gesture; it is a living building in a living tradition

What makes for a beautifully designed stable yard not just functional, but aesthetically satisfying?

The same principles that govern the design of a good country house apply equally to the stable yard: balance, harmony, and rhythm A well-designed yard has a sense of repose It is not busy, nor cluttered, but composed The arrangement of buildings should have a natural logicperhaps a central axis, or a framing of views - so that every element supports the whole.

Proportion is especially important Too often, modern stable buildings are either too low and apologetic, or too large and aggressive Horses are powerful, graceful creatures - they deserve architecture that meets them in kind. A well-proportioned stable gives the horse space, but also sets a tone: one of dignity.

Material is important too; render, brick, stone The roofline, the eaves, the guttering - all these details contribute to the overall expression of the yard Beauty in a working yard is not an extravagance - it is a mark of respect, for the horses and for the life lived with them.

Why does the equestrian lifestyle pair so naturally with classical design?

Because both are concerned with discipline and grace

A well-schooled horse is like a well-proportioned building: it moves with purpose and elegance, grounded in training but expressive in form.

There is also a historical depth to this connection. Horses and classical architecture have long been intertwined - on country estates, in military traditions, and in the visual arts From the equestrian statues of Antiquity to the stable blocks of great houses, the horse has always had a place within the classical world

But more than anything, I think it comes down to the values they share. Horsemanship, at its best, is not showy - it is controlled, precise, deeply felt Classical architecture is the same It has no need to shout It speaks through proportion, through shadow, through stillness That’s why they belong together

Architecture & Design

Your pencil drawings are incredibly detailed and atmospheric. How do you approach drawing a house? Are you telling a story, capturing a feeling, or both?

Both A house is more than its elevation - it lives through light and shadow The way a moulding catches the sun, or how stone ages under wind and rain - these are the things that give a classical building its soul My drawings aim to capture that In order to understand this tradition properly, I spent years measuring and drawing houses I found beautiful Through that process, their beauty entered into my own work. I trained my eye according to what had already stood the test of time

The play of darkness - particularly in the windowsadds not just realism, but depth and atmosphere It lends a slight ethereality to the house, elevating it into an ideal A drawing is a kind of reverence, and I try to present the house as it ought to be seen: timeless, poised, full of presence.

What architectural features distinguish a truly great estate house from a merely large one? state house is not defined by its size or by its composition and proportion between parts is everything. How does a late to the wall? What is the ratio between nd cornice? How are the openings spaced? position of the façade? These are the that shape a great building ding the Classical Orders gives an a powerful framework. A great talent oduce a masterpiece, yes - but even a actitioner, trained in this tradition, can dignified, handsome house It all comes he eye: how well it has been trained, and ed it is to balance and rhythm ouse is composed with care Every detail the whole. That’s what gives it its grace.

you approach designing or restoring a ouse in a way that respects heritage but se for 21st-century life?

h a house as though in conversation with al architect. Additions should feel like xtensions - organic, respectful, and n character with the spirit of the house new wing or restoration should be ishable at first glance: people should hether it was always there cases, of course, where a complementary in style is appropriate. But the goal is e same: to elevate the original, never to w or weaken it A successful design its context If someone says, “Is this a n?”- that, to me, is the highest nt

How do classical principles continue to influence modern country house design?

Classical principles endure because they are, quite simply, eternal. They have evolved organically over millennia - not invented all at once, but rather shaped by the accumulated wisdom of countless generations Their strength lies in adaptability: they can evolve to meet the changing needs of different ages while remaining grounded in something permanent and deeply human

We look to Antiquity not as a rigid blueprint, but as a way of rediscovering our own tradition. Classical architecture is a visual language - one that cannot truly be learned from a textbook It must be drawn, measured, and studied in the flesh Its grammar lies in the orders, mouldings, and proportions; its poetry lies in the way those elements come together to speak across time In that sense, classical architecture expresses something more ancient than even the written word. It reaches into our ancestral memory and speaks of permanence, harmony, and beauty It carries the language of our earliest form of shelter – from the primitive hut to the great temples. What it offers today is exactly what people have always wanted in a home: strength, grace, and a sense of rootedness A classical house can face the weather, withstand time, and still feel as fresh to future generations as it does now Its beauty is never fleeting - it speaks to all ages

How did “Great Houses and Estates” begin? Did you envision it as a platform for storytelling as well as architecture?

I launched Great Houses and Estates in September 2024 with the simple aim of sharing my passion for these places - and it has since grown into something far greater than I ever imagined We’ve now reached nearly half a million followers, and what draws people in, I think, is not just the architecture, but the way of life these houses represent That way of life is rooted, purposeful, and full of meaning Unlike a purely commercial farm, the estate landscape allows for a mix of uses - there are working areas, yes, but also pleasure grounds, parkland, and wild corners where nature is left to its own rhythm There’s space not only for productivity but for reflection and beauty.

The houses themselves are repositories of craftsmanship

Their contents span centuries of national creativity, and their ancestral portraits tell the stories of continuitythrough good times and bad The staff, too, are often deeply tied to the land and have known the family for generations There is a sense of stewardship, of belonging, of civilisation in the truest sense of the word

The old saying that “civilisation is when an old man plants a tree under whose shade he will not sit” rings very true in these places. Landowners think in decades and centuries. It’s a slower rhythm, but a richer one - and Great Houses and Estates is my way of celebrating that

What do you hope your American audience takes away from your keynote in October particularly those unfamiliar with the depth of British rural tradition?

I hope they leave with a sense of the enduring values embedded in the British countryside - of land held not merely as an asset, but as a trust between generations

There’s a remarkable continuity here: the land, the families, the architecture, and the traditions are all woven together in ways that are subtle but deeply meaningful. We live in an age of impermanence and speed The estate life is the opposite - it’s rooted, generational, and travels at a slower pace. The landowner is a custodian. The estate staff are part of the extended family And the house, if cared for properly, becomes more than a structure - it becomes a vessel for memory, beauty, and responsibility.

Co-Founder François Papin on tradition, craftsmanship and family

In a world often driven by mass production and short-lived trends, we simply hope to offer something rooted in craftsmanship, elegance and authenticity. With that spirit in mind I am proud to introduce a new collection of high-end equestrian equipment by Virginia Field Studio that honors the timeless beauty of our sport

Crafted by hand in our studio, each piece in the collection including saddle racks, bridle racks and other stable essentials are made using only the finest materials: solid woods like walnut and oak for their strength and character, full-grain leather for its richness and durability and solid brass fittings for a warm, refined finish. Every detail matters, from the curve of the wood to the hand-stitched leather accents, we pour our passion into creating bespoke pieces that reflect the elegance and heritage of the equestrian tradition

I come from a family deeply rooted in the equestrian world. My father is a dressage instructor, and from a young age horses have been a central part of my life That connection to the equestrian lifestyle is not just personal - it’s generational I’m happy to be joined in this new adventure by my brother, a professional rider, whose insight and shared vision bring a deeper dimension to everything we create

Together, our mission is clear: to craft products that restore the classic, refined aesthetic of equestrian sport. In a marketplace flooded with average quality goods, we are committed to building equipment that stands the test of time both in durability and design

This is just the beginning of a journey fueled by tradition, craftsmanship and family We can’t wait to share it with you
