HANDI MEDICAL SUPPLY

Navigating the World of

WHEELCHAIRS By LAURIE TOMASZEWSKI CMO, Handi Medical Supply

When it comes to wheelchairs, it is definitely not a one-size-fits-all approach. If you, or someone you care about, uses a wheelchair for extended periods of time, a custom wheelchair may be a benefit.

If you have a difficult time repositioning, a wheelchair with a tilt function may be a good solution. The technology available can range from very basic to highly complex. Some complex wheelchairs have features such as standing capabilities and safety functions that would allow the user to avoid obstacles. With all of the different options, it’s a lot to navigate. That’s where Scott Russell comes in. Scott is an Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) for Handi Medical Supply. He works with people who require custom mobility and bath equipment. An ATP is certified by the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA). Scott, along with Handi Medical’s complex rehab technicians, will work with each person to assure they can safely use the equipment. Scott works with all age groups, from pediatric to geriatric. His approach is very individualized. Many health insurance companies will assist in the payment of custom wheelchairs and bathing equipment. Scott, along with your rehab team which may include a physical or occupational therapist, and your healthcare provider, will partner with you to determine the selection of appropriate assistive technology. Handi Medical will work with your insurance company to follow coverage guidelines. According to RESNA, the goal is to always maximize the health and well-being of people with disabilities through technology. ■
