Healthy and Better Every parent knows when their kids are healthy, life is better.

Working with children and their parents to treat ear, nose and throat conditions brings me joy. I often play with the children during the visit to take the fear away. I educate and reassure parents to help them feel comfortable and confident in the medical decisions they are making for their child.

It is extremely rewarding when I can help children improve their health. I love to see kids who were struggling improve with treatments, heal and thrive. I often treat children with chronic ear infections, chronic tonsillitis, and breathing and sleep issues. Sometimes ear tubes and the removal of tonsils and adenoids can reduce infections and improve breathing, sleep, and overall health.

In this issue, you’ll meet our patient Seger and his family. Seger has a complex condition called PANDAS which stands for Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infections.

When Seger has a strep infection, such as strep throat, his behavior changes. It is believed that the body attacks the brain which causes brain inflammation and symptoms including severe tics, rage, lack of impulse control, separation anxiety and harmful thoughts.

Together, with Seger’s parents, we developed a treatment plan that is improving his health and making life better for him and his family.

BRIGHTER DAYS A CHILD'S PATH TOWARD BETTER HEALTH

Jena Faue and Kim Turner witnessed a sudden change in their 4-year-old son from a happy, healthy child to a child consumed by severe tics and rage.

“He was gone. He was not the kid we knew,” Jena said.

Seger Turner’s behavior dramatically changes when he gets strep throat. It is believed that the body attacks the brain which causes brain inflammation and symptoms. Symptoms are anxiety, rage, behavioral regression, tics, sleep disturbances, separation anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder and intrusive thoughts.

The condition is called PANDAS—Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infections.

It’s thought to be an autoimmune response to strep.

In September 2023, Seger awoke in the night with a fever and rash. Violent chills and head shaking followed. Tics became severe and his head began flopping and hammering, sometimes for 12 hours straight.

There were many specialists; tests that offered no answers; and lots of medical bills. “Finding someone who would listen is not something we thought would happen,” Jena said.

In January 2024, Seger was put on an antibiotic for an ear infection.

In a day or two, he was better and his tics were gone. This was a big clue.

Now at age 6, Seger is on a path to better health thanks to his Mankato Clinic care team and his parents who never gave up researching and looking for answers.

Dr. Darla Wrage, Seger’s pediatrician at Mankato Clinic, had seen Seger at his best and worst.

“Seger’s diagnosis reinforces the age-old lesson taught in pediatrics – ‘listen to the parents.’ They know their child best, so their input is very valuable,” Dr. Wrage said. “Seger’s symptoms were quite dramatic and sudden. He also had an equally dramatic response to treatment.”

During flare-ups caused by strep, as well as influenza and COVID-19, Seger changed overnight. Head banging, snorting, throat clearing and gulping air lasted for hours. He punched himself in the face to stop his eyes from rolling. He had thoughts of hurting others, hurting himself, jumping in front of cars, drowning in the ocean. A math whiz, he could not subtract 1 from 2.

“On antibiotics, he has been the sweetest, kindest little soul. He showers us with kisses and love and will tell us how sorry he is for the things he’s said. His voice is back to what it was. He is Seger again. He is 100% Seger again, except he has all these tics lingering. And if they were minor, fine, but they are so much right now, I just need him to be OK,” Jena wrote in Seger’s health log.  MANKATO CLINIC THRIVES | WINTER 2025

 Some tests and treatments for PANDAS are outside the scope of standard medicine.

“Dr. Wrage was very clear that PANDAS was not something she could treat but she wanted us to get to someone who could treat him. She always believed us. She got us everywhere we needed to go,” Jena said. “Without her, we would have never figured this out.”

“It was a journey,” Dr. Wrage said. “With all children in specialty care, we follow up on the information provided by specialists and serve as the medical home for these patients. Pediatricians coordinate care and provide routine health care to kids with complex health conditions.”

Solving the Puzzle In September 2024, Dr. Wrage referred Seger to Dr. Susan Pearson, Pediatric Ear, Nose and Throat specialist, at Mankato Clinic. Jena believed her son, like many kids with PANDAS, could benefit from getting his tonsils and adenoids removed because they harbor strep and bacteria.

“Within two weeks of surgery, he was doing great,” Jena said.

“Dr. Pearson is our whole world. She saved his life. She has given us our quality of life back.”

Dr. Pearson researched PANDAS and shared the risks and benefits of the surgery and let them decide if they wanted to proceed.

“I wanted to make sure we were doing the right thing for Seger.” Dr. Pearson said. “The surgery has made a huge improvement in his quality of life.”

When he does have flare-ups, Dr. Pearson prescribes a treatment plan of antibiotics, steroids and ibuprofen to reduce brain inflammation. She researched medical literature to develop this plan.

“What is so interesting is that after a day or two under treatment he is significantly improved,” Dr. Pearson said.

“Now we don’t have to worry about who is going to help us when we need it. Now we have a doctor who listens and I don’t have to panic. We have a protocol in place. She knows what works for him and she has taken him on as her patient to treat PANDAS,” Jena said.

Jena also learned an environmental trigger for PANDAS is mold. She hired four companies to find mold in their home.

Nothing. So, she ordered a DIY mold test called ERMI; a test recommended by a parent support group.

“We have a nice house,” Jena is quick to point out.

Test results showed high levels of toxic mold. A few years ago, a new gutter was installed, but it had pulled away from the wall.

That wall is in Seger’s playroom, where his clothes were kept.

After heavy rains Jena noticed her son’s symptoms escalated.

The mold has been professionally removed.

Path to Better Health Faced with Seger’s health concerns, Jena homeschools Seger to reduce exposure to strep. Kim, a forensic psychologist, works multiple jobs to keep up with medical and home improvement costs. Jena is a social worker who may resume her career in the future.

Dr. Wrage, Jena and Kim are hopeful that Seger will be able to return to school where he can learn and play with his peers.

“My son is thriving now. I do think he’ll continue to get better.

Our hopes are high,” Jena said.

We are still learning about PANDAS and PANS which stands for Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome. PANS is thought to be an autoimmune response to various types of bacterial or viral infections, not just strep.

Some research questions the condition itself. It is difficult to diagnose, but there are treatments.

We need to do much more research to definitively know how to treat it most effectively and understand why some children suffer from it. When there is a sudden behavior change, PANDAS and PANS are important to consider.

When Sarah Sifers, pediatric psychologist, evaluated Seger, she printed PANDAS information for Jena. Sarah was among the first health professionals to validate what Seger was going through. “When I was crying all the time, she was my calm in the storm,” Jena said.

Sarah Sifers, Ph.D, LP, sees children for behavioral health services at the Mankato Clinic Children’s Health Center. She offers short-term care and can act as a bridge to long-term mental health care if needed. ■

Dr. Pearson is the only pediatric fellowship-trained ENT in southwest Minnesota. She completed a two-year pediatric ENT fellowship at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

When she goes out to eat, she looks for a protein and vegetable on the menu. She avoids sandwiches and pulls up the menu online so she has a game plan going in. She doesn’t cut out any foods and if she slips up, she knows the next day is a new day.

“Don’t let it flow into the next day. Make the plan that you’re going to do better,” Amy says.

The Enara Health phone app connects members to their care team 24/7. Easy and convenient, Amy plugs in photos of her meals, workouts and daily weight. A quick look at the dashboard shows her progress. Most of her visits with her care team are virtual. In addition, Enara members go to Mankato Clinic for in-person visits for diagnostic tests and body composition scans. Data points include muscle mass and body fat percentage.

As part of her journey, she took a break from weight loss. She spent five months building and sustaining muscle. Her exercise specialist sent her workouts with video demos of each exercise. Working out with weights was new to Amy and she found she loved it. She was working out five to six days a week.

STARBUCKS MEDICINE BALL TEA

If you are feeling a little under the weather, this warm concoction of teas, lemon, mint and honey is incredibly soothing to a sore throat.

Even though by the name, it sounds like something you’d drink only when you are sick, my family loves it so much that I make a batch weekly!

INGREDIENTS 2 cups (16 ounces) water

The Starbucks Medicine Ball started out as a secret menu item and then became so popular that it joined the official menu (now called Honey Citrus Mint Tea). I really love having all the ingredients for this tea on hand because I can save so much money by making the drink at home.

Plus, I can make a larger batch once a week and store it in the fridge to heat up when I need it.

INSTRUCTIONS 1.

Heat the water and lemon juice in a small saucepan on the stovetop. Alternatively, you can heat the liquids in a large mug in the microwave or use a tea kettle.

1 peppermint green tea bag

Bring the water to a barely-there simmer.

1 peach herbal tea bag

Add the two tea bags to the liquid and let them steep in the hot water for 5 to 10 minutes.

Stir in the honey and peppermint extract.

5.

Pour the hot tea into your favorite mug and enjoy!

2 tablespoons lemon juice (or the juice of about 1 small lemon)

1 tablespoon pure honey

1/8 teaspoon peppermint extract

Make it a double batch! Sometimes I like to make this recipe for more than one person at a time or to have extra on hand to quickly heat up throughout the week. To do this, double the ingredients, except you still only use 1 peppermint green tea bag and 1 peach herbal tea bag.

It’s not magic, or a cure, however this warm drink may help relieve congestion, plus it gives you a boost of hydration that can aid in faster recovery.

How to store: First, cool it down to room temperature. Then, transfer it to an airtight container and store in refrigerator, away from strong odors, and consume within 3-4 days.

A little package of the ingredients and recipe dropped off on the front porch of someone who was feeling sick or needing encouragement would be a thoughtful way to show you care.

What is kombucha?

Kombucha is a fermented tea, a recipe that has been passed down through centuries of Eastern tradition. For more than 2,000 years, people believed kombucha to have unique healing properties. To craft Kombucha, a base of sweetened tea is cultured with a SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast). Over time, the SCOBY transforms the tea into a bright, tangy, and effervescent drink

with billions of living probiotics that can improve digestion, support gut health, reduce bloating and boost immune function. While there is some sugar used when making kombucha, most of it is gobbled up by healthy bacteria.

What is a mocktail?

Mocktails are the non-alcoholic versions of cocktails. Using a mixture of ingredients, they are often served in cocktail glasses and decorated with garnishes. They can mimic classic cocktails or be unique creations.

These fun and flavorful nonalcoholic options offer hydration without the potential adverse effects associated with alcohol consumption, can be lower in calories, and tend to be a more inclusive option for people of all ages, spiritual and cultural convictions, and backgrounds.

Fill 4 “fancy” or fun glasses with ice and set aside.

In a quart-sized mason jar, cocktail shaker or pitcher, muddle sliced ginger and rosemary together using the end of a wooden spoon or a muddler if you have one.

PARENTING What's in your diaper bag?

As a new parent, it’s tough to know what really needs to be in your diaper bag. First, write your name and phone number in a discreet place inside the bag. In case you misplace it, you can be contacted. Now for the packing! As a pediatrician and mom, here’s my checklist.

Diapers: Make sure you have an adequate supply. A good rule is 1 diaper for every 2-3 hours you’ll be out and about. And a couple extras!

Wipes: Travel-size pack of baby wipes. Refill from your at-home supply to save money and packaging.

Diaper rash cream: Travel-size tube of diaper rash cream or petroleum jelly if you prefer.

Changing pad: Diaper bags usually come with a changing pad that’s tucked into its own slot away from other supplies.

Hand sanitizer: When you can’t wash your hands right away after a diaper change or before feeding, hand sanitizer is a good idea.

Nursing cover: If you are breastfeeding, a nursing cover offers extra privacy and can also be used as a light blanket or shade from the sun.

Burp cloths and bib: Pack several burp cloths for spit-up and other messes.

Bibs are also helpful to keep the front of baby’s shirt dry during feeding.

Pack Your Patience I also advise parents to pack their patience! Even the most prepared parents sometimes forget something.

I was on a flight when I realized I didn’t have ANY diapers. I had to find a new friend and borrow one!

Despite the best planning, life happens when you and your little one are out in the world. It’s OK if things don’t go perfectly. You’ll handle it and adjust. Take a deep breath, be flexible, you got this.

Bottles: Make sure you have enough bottles, nipples, formula, and a portable bottle warmer. If you’re feeding baby breast milk, store your bottles in an insulated cooler bag with an ice pack. Portion out bottles and formula so you don’t have to measure on the go.

Food, snacks and water: Make sure you have snacks and water for yourself!

Being out with baby is a calorie burner! If your baby is eating solids, pack baby food and snacks.

Pacifier: Throw in an extra pacifier if your baby uses one. They get lost and fall on the floor. Trust me, you don’t want to be without!

Ziploc bags – gallon size: Perfect for soiled clothing or burp cloths.

Change of clothes: Babies have blowouts. Always have a change of clothes in your diaper bag. Pack comfy 1-piece sleep and play sets for ease and convenience. Bring extra socks if the outfits don’t have footies!

Toys: Throw in a rattle or teething toy.

Blanket: A light blanket is so versatile for added warmth, swaddling, or placing on the floor to let baby stretch out.

Sunscreen: When babies are 6 months and older, sunscreen can be used. Throw it in!

Wallet, phone and keys: Most diaper bags have a compartment for your phone, wallet, keys and other essentials.

Whether you’re planning for a major purchase, building a safety net, or tackling debt, small steps now can lead to big progress by year’s end.

Create a Budget Spending and saving habits can fluctuate over the years.

When was the last time you sat down and created a budget?

Even if it has only been a year since you last adjusted your budget, take some time to see if you need to prepare for any big purchases this year, decrease certain areas of spending, or find ways to supplement income.

Creating a budget is a helpful tool in reaching your financial goals. If you plan to buy a house, trade in for a new car, or start a college fund for your children, a well-maintained budget can guide you in allocating your money wisely and show how much progress you are making in preparing for that purchase.

Action step: Track your expenses for a full month. Compare what you spend to what you earn, and use that snapshot to build or adjust your budget. Look for patterns, surprises, and opportunities to save.

Build Your Emergency Fund Without a safety net of savings in your bank account, unplanned bills and emergencies can wreak havoc on your finances. Being able to reach into your emergency fund allows you to avoid the pitfalls of acquiring unexpected debt.

If you want to be prepared for the future, a good rule of thumb is to put away at least three to six months’ worth of expenses. Having a financial buffer allows you to handle unexpected expenses with greater ease and confidence.

Action step: Set up an automatic transfer from your checking account to savings—weekly, biweekly, or monthly.

Treat it like a recurring bill you pay yourself.

Pay Down Debt Mortgages, auto loans, credit cards, student loans, and personal loans can all add up very quickly. With varying interest rates and principal amounts, it can feel like a mountain too big to tackle. One strategy to start paying down debt is to practice the snowball method or avalanche method.

Keep in mind that each method involves making your minimum monthly payments.

The snowball method focuses on paying off your smallest debts first and then reallocating that money to your next highest debt. This method allows you to see progress quickly.

The avalanche method focuses on paying off your high-interest debts first and then reallocating that money to your next debt with the highest interest rate. This method allows you to save money in the long run by paying less interest.

Not only will paying off your debts reduce the accumulating interest costs, it can also have a positive effect on your credit score!

Action step: Choose one loan this year to focus more efforts on paying off. Use the snowball method by choosing your smallest debt balance or the avalanche method by choosing your highest interest balance.

The start of a new year is the perfect time to reanalyze your spending habits and find the best ways to allocate your money. Whether you choose to budget more intentionally, build your savings, or reduce debt, each step brings you closer to financial confidence and peace of mind. ■

Winter has come again and there is no doubt it’s here to stay! At least a few months anyway! With that comes the cold temperatures, the darker evenings and of course the snow! I call it “hibernation season” where a person likes to be indoors and cozy up like the bears do!

With that being said, it’s still so important that we do what we can to feel good. The “blues,” as well as seasonal affective disorder, are real during the winter months. We need to make sure that we do what we can to make our mind, body and soul happy. To me, I view all three components as links to a chain of command. If we aren’t in a good state of mind, it affects our soul, which can affect how our body feels and so on and so forth. So how can we make sure that we stay happy and healthy in the winter months?

Personally, I like to go on walks when the sun is shining, even if it’s during lunch hours to obtain Vitamin D which our bodies produce from sunlight. Vitamin D plays a role in our mental health and can help us feel happier. Just make sure to bundle up! Grab a friend and talk to them during this time or go on your own to walk off stress, or ease something that may be heavy on your mind. It’s good for your soul.

For all those gymgoers out there – when it’s dark in the morning and night, it’s hard to have the motivation to work out, but you can do so much even at home! If it’s too cold, winter storm advisories or warnings are in effect, or you really want to just be home, there are many at-home workouts. Limited equipment is needed and you can still get your body moving and keep it warm!

I try to look at home workouts as if it’s a class I must attend or a work shift, and if I don’t do it, it’s considered an absence or a write-up! Trust me... it does work and when you work out, it truly helps you feel good.

During the winter, it’s also important to do what we can to try to lift someone’s spirits.

That can be donating food, clothes, money or shelter to those who may be struggling.

We may also volunteer or open our doors to someone who may be lonely. Spreading joy and love to those who really need it is sometimes more rewarding for the giver! I always feel so much better when I do something that I know can make an impact on someone else’s life.

My favorite thing to do during the winter months that truly makes my mind, body and soul happy is baking cookies and treats with my son Elijah. We bring them up north every Christmas and celebrate the holiday with my parents and sister. I use my time off from work to go on walks and soak up some much-needed sunshine, play games, bake more goodies and just enjoy that time. Try taking a winter retreat at home! Invite a few friends or family members for games, crafts, a walk, and a potluck.

— A. E. Housman Poetry often carries an unfair reputation: mysterious, elite, complicated, or somehow reserved for those with advanced degrees and overflowing bookshelves. Yet, anyone who has ever memorized a favorite song lyric has already set foot in the world of poetry.

The gap between what poetry is and what is popularly conceived to be remains surprisingly wide. It is a divide commonly shaped by early classroom experiences with centuries-old texts, lingering anxieties about “getting it,” and the myth that poems arrive fully formed only to those gifted enough to write them.

Five local poets invite you to explore poetry. They’ll tell you that poetry is not an academic puzzle but a living, breathing art form you’re surrounded by every day, whether it be in music, conversations, grief and joy, or in your day-to-day life.

What is a common misconception about poetry?

Amy Buechler

That it’s difficult to understand. Oftentimes, we’re teaching young people classic poetry, but our society doesn’t speak and write in those same ways. It’s important to read contemporary poetry to learn how the genre of poetry is moving in new and interesting directions. Also, we need to read poets who write about important themes, discuss current political movements, and address unspoken topics of violence and genocide.

Reading builds empathy.

Richard Meyer

That it’s largely meant for eggheads or college professors. It’s a bit ironic that people may enjoy popular music and can recite the lyrics of numerous songs, yet they shun poetry. Poetry deals with common human experience, with thoughts and feelings shared by almost everyone. I think a good poem often expresses something the reader already knows or feels but does so in a new, creative, or memorable way.

That it is hard to understand. If you can understand and relate to song lyrics, you can do the same with other forms of poetry Some readers assume poems simply “come to” poets.

What can you share about writing poetry?

Michael Torres

Images and/or lines for a poem do “come to” me, but it’s taken me years to cultivate that sort of attentiveness. From that initial spark to finishing a poem, whatever that means, can take me anywhere from a month to five years.

Was there a misconception about poetry that you held before becoming a poet?

Jana Bouma

Well, I was one who, after attempting Emily Dickinson as a teen and slogging through Shakespeare in high school, felt maybe I just didn’t “get” poetry! Fortunately, I kept at it. (And now I love Dickinson, Shakespeare, and poets from every century!)

What would you change about how poetry is introduced to young readers?

Gwen Westerman

Starting their “exposure” to poetry with song. How many of those nursery rhymes and tunes do we remember? Those are poems, too.

What advice would you give to budding writers or people who are curious about poetry?

Amy Buechler

Read. Read widely and with great intention. Don’t hesitate to read the collection that scares you, read classics, read your favorite poet’s poet. Also, when writing, have fun and try something new. Poetry has the freedom of play.

Richard Meyer

Someone who wishes to be a poet should write and write and write. You may be disappointed with much of what you produce, but continue with the work. Discarding and starting over is part of the process. Read poets from the past and from the present. Find poets whose work you enjoy and learn from them. See how they do things in a poem, how they put a poem together. For all people, I would suggest giving poetry another look. Browse anthologies, collections, or online sites. Read poetry at random. You will encounter poems you don’t like or understand, but with time and persistence, you will also find many riches and much wonder.

If you can, go to an open mic or a poetry reading in your area, even if you’re not going to get on the mic. The act of writing is an essentially lonely endeavor, so having a solid literary community is a blessing.

Jana Bouma

Browse around, ask for suggestions, and find a group of fellow explorers. The League of Minnesota Poets has nine chapters across the state. VINE Adult Community Center in Mankato is hosting a series of poetry workshops. Other arts organizations also host readings and gatherings. Find your starting point and then expand your circle of poetic experience. And go to readings and performances of poetry.

Next to the window, he glints against the light, the speckled gray of him—except where a small streak of dark blue runs through the center.

Hushed river, my father, he fits perfectly in the small front pocket of my jeans where cowboys used to keep watches. I am no cowboy but I tip my hat as I leave the room. Outside, the air takes on the scent of a just-mown lawn, its deep pulp. I pat my pocket and it feels good that he is there. I carry my father around with me like this for days, checking for him at the hip. There is no need for us to speak.

Jana Bouma

Jana Bouma’s debut poetry collection, Spinning the Stone, is available from Finishing Line Press. Her poems have appeared in many journals and anthologies. She earned her PhD in English Literature from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She lives with her husband in southern Minnesota.

Amy Buechler

Amy Buechler earned her MFA in Creative Writing from Minnesota State University, Mankato, and her BFA in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Her debut collection of poetry, Grafting, was published by Atmosphere Press under the name Amy Lundquist.

Amy currently resides in Minneapolis and teaches English at Normandale Community College.

Michael Torres

Michael Torres was born and brought up in Pomona, California. His debut collection of poems, An Incomplete List of Names (Beacon Press, 2020), was a National Poetry Series selection.

He teaches in the MFA program at Minnesota State University, Mankato, and through the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop.

Gwen Westerman

Gwen Nell Westerman, Minnesota’s Poet Laureate, lives in southern Minnesota, as did her Dakota ancestors. Her poems, essays, and short stories appear in numerous publications and anthologies.

Her poetry collection Follow the Blackbirds (2013) was published by Michigan State University Press.

Richard Meyer

Richard Meyer, a former English and humanities teacher, lives in Mankato. He was awarded the 2012 Robert Frost Farm Prize for his poem “Fieldstone.” His book of poems, Orbital Paths, won a silver medal in the 2016 IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards. His recent book of poetry is Stumbling Onward. Richard is also the author of Wise Heart, the fascinating memoirs of his mother, Gert. His books are available on Amazon. ■

MEET KATLYN KATLYN CHRISTENSON, MA, LMFT

Katlyn Christenson, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, joined the Mankato Clinic Department of Psychology.

Katlyn specializes in treating young children up to age 6 as well as adults and couples through individual and couples therapy.

Her clinical focus is attachment, development, trauma, anxiety, depression and grief.

She has several years of experience helping children and families strengthen development and child-caregiver relationships through Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) and Child Parent Psychotherapy (CPP).

She also supports couples using evidence-based and emotion-focused techniques to improve communication and deepen connection.

She earned her Marriage and Family Therapy degree from Saint Mary’s University, Minneapolis, and her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Minnesota State University-Mankato.

She enjoys spending time outside with her three dogs, reading, playing board games and hunting.

One of her favorite quotes is from Brene Brown "Vulnerability is not weakness but rather the greatest measure of courage."

What makes you thrive?

I thrive when there is a healthy balance of work and play. I enjoy being at work, but I also enjoy walking my dogs, reading, building Legos, playing board games with family and friends, and hunting which help me rejuvenate and continue to show up for patients long-term.

Why did you join the Mankato Clinic?

I value wrap-around care in which a patient can be seen by multiple specialists in one spot, and it offers more opportunities for providers to collaborate to support the patient’s needs. Also, Mankato Clinic has promoted a healthy work-life balance.

What is your favorite thing about winter?

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a teacher and even though I am not in education, I get to teach patients about emotions and regulation tips and tricks.

What’s your favorite thing to cook?

I prefer to bake and I get a lot of ideas from TikTok. This fall I experimented and made apple crumble bread, homemade noodles, and other fun fall treats.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I would go to Ireland. First, to see Harry Potter landscapes, Game of Thrones landscapes, the architecture, and Ireland has a Puffin Penguin season (they look so cute)!

I enjoy the holiday season with family and friends. It’s cozy season and I enjoy being inside wrapped in a blanket reading a good book.

I have two Alaskan Klee Kais who are highly energetic dogs. So I spend most of my time playing and getting outdoors with them. When they’re resting, I like to dabble with computers.

I joined the Mankato Clinic because I love having other providers to collaborate with to optimize a patient’s progress. I’m excited to be a part of a place that values teamwork and providing quality care with a hometown feel.

Her clinical interests include early intervention, speech sound disorders, motor speech disorders, and augmentative and alternative communication. She also offers PROMPT therapy, a hands-on speech therapy approach that uses touch cues to guide movements.

Emily Enge, pediatric occupational therapist, joined Mankato Clinic Pediatric Therapy Services.

“My approach is rooted in child-centered interventions that foster engagement, confidence, and skill development. I focus on building strong relationships and strive to tailor each session to the child’s unique strengths, needs, and goals. Collaboration with families, teachers, and other caregivers is a core value in my practice, ensuring that therapeutic strategies carry over into a child’s natural environment for meaningful, lasting progress.”

Emily’s clinical interests include feeding disorders, sensory processing disorders, developmental delays, orthotics and animal assisted therapy. She has experience working with individuals across a wide age range.

She earned her Master of Occupational Therapy degree from Midwestern University-Glendale, AZ, and her Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Grand Canyon University, Phoenix.

What makes you thrive?

Being outdoors and spending time with family and friends. I also enjoy retail therapy and creating flower bouquets.

Why did you join the Mankato Clinic?

I joined the Mankato Clinic because of their engagement with the community and the opportunity to be a part of a multidisciplinary team that tailors care to each child’s unique needs.

What is your favorite thing about winter?

My favorite thing about winter is looking at Christmas lights and snuggling up at home with family and hot chocolate.

Originally from Shakopee, Emily enjoys traveling, hiking, biking, and being outdoors with her Golden Retriever.

When I was young, I wanted to be a neonatal surgeon or a professional dancer on Dancing with the Stars.

What surprises people about you?

I am a master at the board game Mancala.

What’s your favorite thing to cook?

I love to cook anything pasta related and I enjoy baking cookies, bars and cheesecake.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Although I want to travel to every continent, if I had to just pick one place, I would choose Greece because I love the Mediterranean vibe and stunning architecture.

MEET LIZ

YOUR FRIENDLY GREETER AT MAIN STREET CLINIC “I was born here in Mankato and I am proud to be part of this hometown clinic. Mankato Clinic cares about their patients and their staff.”

Liz Wilmes, Mankato Clinic Greeter, is the first person many people see when they enter the Mankato Clinic’s Main Street location. She is here to welcome patients and visitors and help them find their way.

She answers all questions – big and small – and there are many.

“I do believe that people enjoy having a real person to help them with their needs. I verify appointments and make sure people are directed to the right department, location or correct door on this campus. I assist with phone calls and transportation too. I do my best to keep an eye on the lobby so that things are running smoothly here,” she says.

Liz has worked at Mankato Clinic for 25 years! While she hasn’t always been a greeter, she has always been a member of the frontline staff. Sometimes, patients stop by her desk to say hello and share how life’s going.

“I interact with a lot of patients and people each day. I like to make sure that people feel comfortable at the clinic,” she says.

Liz welcomes patients and visitors from all cultures, backgrounds and walks of life. When there are language barriers, Liz connects patients with interpreter services. Sometimes they communicate with the aid of phone translation apps and documents that help Liz point them in the right direction.

She understands that coming to the clinic can be stressful for people for many different reasons.

“I am a pretty calm person. I think being approachable and a good listener is important,” Liz adds.

On a personal level, Liz has three grandkids, 10, 12 and 18. “My grandkids are the best and I love talking about them!” Family trips up north are always fun and in the summer she can be found at an outdoor pool. At home, she likes relaxing with her spoiled calico cat, Luna, and listening to music.

“I enjoy visiting with people and finding humor in the everyday,” says Liz, who also likes to hear how our patients’ grandkids are doing!

Greeter is the perfect role for Liz. As part of the Mankato Clinic family since 2000, Liz absolutely encourages others to apply to the Mankato Clinic. ■

Make Me A Thriver Charlie Leftridge

When you step inside the Carnegie Art Center in Mankato, you’re entering more than an art gallery.

You’re entering a space shaped by a leader who believes art is one of the most powerful ways humans connect. For Executive Director Charlie Leftridge, connection isn’t just a value; it’s what makes him thrive.

Raised on a small dairy farm near Tyler, Minn., in a musical family, creativity was inescapable. “My sisters and I were doomed to be artists,” he jokes, reflecting on a childhood spent outdoors writing songs, and mirroring the habits of his grandfather and uncle. Music carried him through Concordia College in Moorhead and then to the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, where he completed a master’s in music composition and, soon after, began doctoral studies.

But it was his volunteer work at an arts nonprofit during grad school that altered his journey. “I realized that as much as I loved higher ed, what really lit me up was helping other people create and building community around that,” he says.

That realization led him into nonprofit administration, working first with the Mankato Symphony Orchestra and then as executive director at The Grand Center for Arts & Culture in New Ulm. Four years ago, he brought his passion for art and leadership to the Carnegie.

One of the most striking things about the Carnegie Art Center is the building itself. The former Carnegie library was built in 1901 and was nearly lost in the 1970s when a wave of “new is better” threatened historic structures across the country. “Carnegie libraries have this really specific and historical architectural value,” Charlie says. “Our rotunda’s curved walls make it both beautiful and a little challenging for hanging art, but they create a space unlike any other.”

Today, the Carnegie Art Center continues to steward the historic building while expanding its mission as a vibrant arts hub. With 10 fully occupied artist studios (and a long waiting list), the center constantly pulses with creative energy.

“We’re fortunate,” Charlie says. “But old buildings need love.”

The Carnegie’s leadership team is actively planning multiyear improvements, including window updates, roof repairs, restoration of the front steps, and additional enhancements.

“It’s exciting more than daunting,” he insists. “Everything we do to care for the building directly benefits the artists and audiences who use it.”

One of the Carnegie’s most unique offerings is its excellent acoustics. In a region without a dedicated mid-sized performance venue, the rotunda and flanking galleries have become an unexpected musical and performance haven for the greater Mankato area.

Renowned local bassist Liz Draper curates Live at the Carnegie series. World musics, experimental collaborations, and national artists have all found a welcoming stage at the Carnegie. Since the start, the series has flourished.

“We wanted to bring performances to southern Minnesota that people wouldn’t otherwise get to experience,” Charlie says.

The Carnegie’s art exhibition curation process is thoughtful and community-minded. With a six-month open call and a committee-led selection process, Charlie and his team ensure a mix of established and up-and-coming artists are displayed within the galleries. In 2026, the center will host its first dedicated Emerging Artist Exhibition.

If you ask Charlie, the heartbeat of the Carnegie isn’t just in its diverse programming, it’s in the people. Volunteers wash walls, hang exhibitions, staff the gift shop, and serve as docents to greet guests. Even the resident studio artists contribute by actively participating in open studio events, volunteering, and showing in member exhibitions. The center, a community nonprofit, relies on the generous support of community donors and patrons.

That same energy of creativity and connection is what fuels Charlie: “I thrive in spaces where I feel connected, and art is such a powerful vehicle for connection. When people can be together, share stories, and feel happy, especially in a place like this, well, that’s everything.”

At the Carnegie Art Center, those connections are happening every day: between artists and audiences, volunteers and visitors, history and innovation. And at the center of it all is an impassioned leader who thrives on inspiring others to do the same. ■

PRODUCE PLACE FRESH FRUITS AND VEGGIES FOR A HEALTHIER COMMUNITY

Access to healthy foods—especially fresh fruits and vegetables—helps children, families, and individuals lead healthier lives and prevent disease. However, not everyone has easy access to fresh produce. One in eight Americans are food insecure and it affects their health.

That’s why the Mankato Clinic has launched Produce Place, a new initiative that brings free, fresh produce directly to patients and visitors in need. The goal is simple: to increase access to nutritious foods and promote healthy eating habits.

Produce Place is a collaboration among local partners who are committed to making sure fruits and vegetables are available to everyone.

“Many people in our community don’t have enough food to eat. We have conversations with our patients about food insecurity. At the same time, we encourage patients to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables,” said Holly Ellison, registered and licensed dietitian and certified diabetes care and education specialist in the Diabetes Care Center at Mankato Clinic.

“Now, we can offer our patients fresh produce in clinic along with community resources for food shelves and other food pickup sites. Now we are better prepared for this conversation and we are ready with real solutions for our patients.”

Mankato Clinic has Produce Place refrigerators in two locations: • Children’s Health Center Lobby, 1421 Premier Drive, Mankato • Main Street Clinic Lobby, 1230 East Main Street, Mankato The refrigerators are stocked with produce by Regional Food Rescue Coordinator for Region 9 Development Commission, Tom Polich. Tom works closely with South Central MN Food Recovery, operated by Natasha Frost, owner of Wooden Spoon.

In our region, large quantities of high-quality fresh produce are often destined for the landfill. In 2024 alone, SCMNFR recovered 26 tons of food!

“Our mission is ‘Food with Dignity, Saving Our Environment.’

I am passionate about building a network and making sure all people have nutritious food for themselves and their families. When I heard that Mankato Clinic needed help stocking their refrigerators, I added them to our distribution network,” Natasha said.

The Produce Place refrigerators were purchased with a grant from the Statewide Health Improvement Partnership, Blue Earth County. The Mankato Clinic Foundation provided partial funding for the refrigerators and additional funding to purchase produce through 2026 if needed.

Mankato Clinic patients and visitors are encouraged to join Produce Place to receive email updates on available produce and recipes.

“We are thrilled to offer this service at the Mankato Clinic. It’s so rewarding to see the rainbow of fruits and vegetables in our lobby refrigerator. And it fills my cup when I see patients and visitors filling a bag on their way out the door,” Holly said.

Our Community Giving back to the community is part of who we are at the Mankato Clinic. A small, dedicated group of physicians started the Mankato Clinic Foundation in 1965, making it one of the oldest foundations in Minnesota.

Our mission is to encourage and support the health and well-being of the communities we serve through efforts that promote and improve community wellness. In the last 10 years, the Mankato Clinic Foundation has provided more than $2 million in scholarships and grants to worthwhile organizations and programs.
