T HE S O UND _ AWA K EN S Chiming watches that strike the time were a much sought-after piece of personal technology in the 1800s. The expert micro-engineers – the watchmakers of the vallée de Joux – created these luxurious personal mechanisms out of necessity – rather than having to rely on the city and pendulum clocks to tell the hour, those privileged enough to own a minute repeater pocket watch – easily placed on a bedside table – could tell the time at night via a personal timekeeper.

Personal technology, key to life today, has always been at the heart of Audemars Piguet. This year, in a passionate continuation of a complex technology that Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet set out to master 140 years ago - Audemars Piguet unveils a watch that is potentially the most sonically considered minute repeater of modern times : the Royal Oak Concept RD#1, developed according to the principles of stringed instrument making. Audemars Piguet significantly enhances the acoustic quality of horological chiming technology and that achieves an unprecedented volume of sound transmission in a water-resistant case.
The same steel gong system that Audemars Piguet used since the company was founded in 1875 is still at the heart of minute repeater technology today. The long steel strip that curves meticulously around the movement (the gong) is worked to super strength. It requires the time-honoured skill of an experienced watchmaker so that when the gong is fully assembled, the sonic qualities of the steel are primed to achieve a harmonious tone.

In 1668, the young monk Pierre Pérignon takes office as the cellarer and procurator of the Benedictine abbey of Hautvillers on the northern slopes of the Marne, in the heart of Champagne. Under his watch, the abbey prospers, especially its vineyards.
Until his death in 1715, he makes no exception to his ambitions for perfection, to create “the best wine in the world” as said in his own words on September 29, 1694. Dom Pierre Pérignon invents, perfects, and passes on the enhanced techniques to create a wine whose reputation is second to none.
“Father Pérignon’s wine” acquired such a reputation for excellence that the wine merchants of His Majesty the Sun King soon brought word of it to the Royal Court at Versailles.

Power delivery is effortless, but dramatic, thanks to a V12 engine married to 8-speed automatic ZF transmission. 624 bhp / 465kW is available to the driver while the 0-60 mph sprint is achieved in 4.4 seconds, compared with 563 bhp / 420kW and 0-60 in 4.7 seconds for Ghost. FAZIOLI CREATES A ONE-OF-A-KIND
PIANO
WITH EXOTIC TAMO WOOD FROM JAPAN A new Fazioli has been unveiled in Vancouver, and it is finished completely in Tamo Wood that comes from Japan. The rare Italian piano has been commission by local retailer Showcase Pianos to match the ‘Absolute’ collection of renowned Italian furniture maker Giorgio. Upon its arrival to Vancouver, the unique Fazioli was taken to Lloyd Bruce Home in Coal Harbour where it was shown for the first time. The furniture store in Coal Harbour has the whole ‘Absolute’ line of furniture on display right now, which includes beds, couches, dining tables, desks, and more. The piano makes an impressive centre peiece for the whole collection. Showcase Pianos owner Manuel Bernaschek looks forward to selling this piano, and ordering a piano to match one of two other collections from Giorgio: The Sunrise Collection and the Lund Collection. The Luna collection is mainly in Macassar Ebony, and the Sunrise collection features a unique combination of Birds Eye Maple and iguana print leather. Fazioli Pianos are made by hand in Italy and continue gaining strength in the high performance and luxury piano market. During the most recent Rubinstein International Piano Competition, 5 out of 6 of the finalists chose to do their final performance on the Fazioli instead of the usual Steinway. Each piano takes more than 2,000 man hours to make and has many parts plated in 18k gold to prevent corrosion. At the heart of each Fazioli lies the soundboard, which comes from the Val Di Fiemme forest in North Italy. The red spruce wood that Fazioli chooses there are the same trees that were once harvested by Antonio Stradivari for his famous violins. Fazioli pianos start at $110,000 for the smallest model in black, and Showcase Pianos carries many brands of new and used pianos in two locations, in Vancouver on Broadway near Toys R Us, and in Richmond’s beautiful Aberdeen Centre.
