The Millenary Carbon One has emerged straight from Audemars Piguet’s cutting-edge research laboratory combining the finest talents - engineers, designers and watchmakers - from both of the company’s production sites in Le Brassus and Le Locle. Its mission consists in exploring advanced technical paths in order to ensure 100% in-house conception, prototype creation and production of exclusive movements that are a perfect match for their exterior. The Millenary Carbon One, a limited series of 120 watches, has just emerged from this hotbed of creativity. It is freely inspired by motor sports and their extraordinary ultra-light high-performance speed machines, while adopting the oval shape of the Millenary as a spectacular playground. Its key strengths include a threedimensional design, innovative materials, and a 100% proprietary movement equipped with a tourbillon, a chronograph and a 10-day power reserve.
The Millenary Carbon One’s three-dimensional design aims to move beyond the classic opposition between outside and inside, between the interior of the watch - its movement - and the exteriormeaning the case and the dial with its multiple displays. Thanks to the openworked dial, the Millenary Carbon One clearly reveals the manner in which its parts are layered on various levels. It shows a calibre featuring a modern design that plays on symmetrical effects such as between the barrels and their bridges on either side of the chronograph counter; on redesigned shapes such as the tourbillon bridge; and on materials.
The latter focus on black, with blackened steel for the bridges on the dial side, eloxed aluminium for the bridges on the underside and carbon for the mainplate. This is however a very special carbon, an isotropic material composed of carbon nanofibres injected at an extremely high pressure of 7500 N/cm2 and at a temperature of 2400°C in order to achieve a material boasting mechanical, physical and chemical stability in all directions. This amorphous and chemically neutral composite material maintains its dimensions over a broad range of temperatures. Due to its absolutely minimal elastic deformation, this carbon also features exceptional mechanical properties well suited to driving in metal elements, such as the foot screws in the body of the mainplate. Once in place, these components thus guarantee optimal stability.

When it was unveiled at the 2012 SIHH, the RM 056 split-seconds competition chronograph sapphire, a limited edition of 5 timepieces, caused a shock-wave in the watchmaking world with its pared down purity, its movement with exemplary finishing and its case made entirely of sapphire crystal. This watchmaking revolution has elevated the Richard Mille brand to an unrivalled level of design and innovation.
Following this technical feat and determined to continue challenging the very limits of fine watchmaking, Richard Mille has created another exceptional piece for 2013: the RM 56-01 Sapphire Crystal. The brand used its immense experience of skeletonisation and of making components in sapphire crystal for the creation of the RM 56-01, characterised by its extraordinary transparent movement.
By using a sapphire crystal baseplate – which supports the entire manually wound tourbillon movement – Richard Mille allows as much light as possible to penetrate into the caliber RM56-01, which displays the hours and minutes, with power-reserve and torque, at 11 and 2 o’clock respectively, and a function selector indicator at 4 o’clock. This quest for extreme transparency at the heart of a titanium movement also led the engineers to use sapphire crystal for the central bridge and third wheel. The caliber RM5601, made from sapphire crystal and titanium, is immune to temperature variations and wear, ensures excellent stability and offers exemplary chronometric performance.
Its three-part case is machined and ground from a solid block of sapphire crystal. Machining operations lasting for over 40 days, 24 hours a day, are required to produce one case. In order to machine it, a specialist CNC machine had to be purchased, and all the components made from sapphire crystal were machined by the world specialists in this material, Stettler, located in Lyss, Switzerland. The case is water-resistant to 30 metres, thanks to two O-ring seals in transparent Nitril, and is fixed using 24 grade 5 titanium spline screws.
Its strap carries the concept of transparency to its apogee. Collaboration between Biwi SA and Richard Mille has made it possible to develop a material, Aerospace nano®, that employs nanotechnology to obtain unequalled transparency and strength. The nano-reinforcements in this material, which has never been used in watchmaking before, are generated in situ during the manufacture of Aerospace nano®. Its elastic and waterproof properties make it silky to the touch and superbly comfortable. The strap of the RM 56-01 alone inaugurates a new class of materials in watchmaking.
The RM 56-01 Sapphire Crystal symbolises all the expertise Richard Mille has accrued in showcasing a caliber through its sheer transparency. Because the machining of sapphire crystal is an extremely difficult process, the RM 56-01 is only available in a very limited edition of 5 timepieces.
Vertu, the world’s leading provider of luxury mobile phones, has launched VERTU TI, a new contemporary smartphone powered by Android. Based around a titanium case that has been used for its strength, elegance and low weight, VERTU TI also uses leather accents as well as the largest sapphire crystal screen ever engineered at 3.7 inches. The sapphire crystal renders the screen virtually scratch proof and it is tested to be four times stronger than other smart phones in terms of impact resistance.

In a demonstration and testimony that lives up to the car, it has achieved a historic record with its 50-day power reserve. It is also the watch with the most watchmaking components created to date by Hublot.
The watch and the car: The MP-05 “LaFerrari” was developed - in technical and design terms - entirely in parallel with
the car, alongside the Ferrari teams. They share a number of common points. Able to boast no fewer than 637 components for the movement, which is also equipped with a Tourbillon, as well as a power reserve of approximately 50 days thanks to its 11 barrels, arranged in a line just like a spinal column and interconnected so that they do not each discharge in turn but support each other, this watch is closer to being a concept watch.
The watch is finely wrought in terms of shape, featuring a complex shaped sapphire crystal clearly reminiscent of the car’s outline, as well as an open case-back, and is made from black PVD titanium. It is topped by a titanium and carbon insert in its centre, revealing the winding crown. The time-setting crown is positioned under the case. Both are completely integrated into the design, and therefore practically invisible.
The movement has an original display, featuring first off on the front vertical face the small seconds indicated by means of an aluminium cylinder fastened onto the suspended Tourbillon cage (significantly bigger than usual with a cage diameter of 14.50 mm, for even better appreciation of the mechanical parts).

On March 28 Ferrari Maserati of Vancouver introduced the long awaited all-new Ferrari Berlinetta to a select gathering of VIP guests at their magnificent showroom on Burrard Street. Ferrari enthusiast and dealership owner Brian Ross and his wife flew in from Ohio to personally meet the invited guests and to marvel at this truly spectacular new model.

The menu was based on the romance and mystique of Italy, home of Ferrari and featured classic Mediterranean cuisine, with a contemporary Canadian flair.

This is a car for promenades, joy of life distilled in a car. The design of the LP 560-4 Spyder expresses toughness. Its minimalist shape clearly indicates that it is the direct descendant of the Gallardo LP 560-4.
Driving a Gallardo Spyder is an exciting, unique, and captivating experience which is made even more thrilling by the unmistakable sound of the V10 engine.
A tight, muscular contour directs the gaze from the front of the car to the cockpit, which promises one thing above all: a complete open-air driving experience like no other.
The Spyder is convertible version of the Gallardo LP5604, a full-blown supercar with a sonorous V10, precise handling and double-take-inducing looks. Lamborghini gave the Spyder a facelift, updating the front end with a more aggressive look that incorporates trapezoidal and triangular air intakes. The geometric theme is continued at the rear, which also features restyled taillights. Nineteen-inch “Apollo polished” alloy wheels round out the exterior revisions.
At the heart of the Spyder is a 5.2-liter 10-cylinder that pumps out 552 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 398 ftlbs of torque at 6,500 rpm, enough power to reach 100 kmph in four seconds. The Gallardo’s all-wheel-drive
system that provides optimal acceleration and traction while making handling more neutral.
A gated six-speed manual transmission is available for purists, while those looking for the convenience of clutchless shifting in their sports car can opt for a sixspeed E-gear transmission. The E-gear transmission was recently completely redesigned, resulting in a reduction in gear change times by 40 percent. The driver can also now choose between five different driving and changing programs. The most performance-oriented “CORSA” setting not only affects shift speed -- it also directs the engine for maximum acceleration. The ‘Thrust Mode’ ensures maximum acceleration from neutral while the
angle of the throttle valve and the clutch are optimized.
The Spyder features twin spring-loaded rollover bars that deploy within 250 milliseconds in a rollover situation -- simultaneously activating the seatbelt tensioners for optimal occupant safety. An optional carbon-ceramicdisc braking system makes use of eight-piston Brembo calipers up front, and four-piston calipers at he rear. Rotor size is 14.4 inches at the front and 14 inches at the rear.
Bi-Xenon headlights provide plenty of illumination at night, while LED daytime running lights give the car a more aggressive and high-tech look.
The French have long enjoyed unequivocal recognition for their mastery in the world of fine liquor – from Cognac to Champagne, and all things vine-related. However, vodka – that hearty, grainbased spirit evoking the icy cold of Eastern European winters – had not traditionally been part of France’s famed legacy, leaving the spotlight to Russia and Scandinavia. That is, until 1997, when creator Sidney Frank had redefined the deceivingly simple spirit, harnessing the best traditions of French cognac-making to produce a liquor so extraordinary it earned the title of ‘The World’s Best Tasting Vodka’. Taking its name after local geese that flock to France’s Cognac region, Grey Goose vodka was born.
The vodka’s claim to fame begins in northern Picardy, where lush farmlands produce the highest quality of soft winter wheat for the liquor’s rich base. After milling and fermentation, the alcohol is distilled in a custom-designed five-step process that goes beyond simply removing impurities to focus on development of the spirit’s
distinctive character that imparts its signature flavour.
The base spirit is sent on to world-famous Cognac, where it is blended with pure spring water, naturally filtered through the limestone of Grande Champagne and drawn by an artesian well from an aquifer 500 feet beneath the surface. The blend undergoes over 500 quality control checks daily, including the crucial final taste test performed by a panel of experts and the Grey Goose Maître de Chai (“cellar master”) François Thibault, who applies his immense spirit-making expertise to personally approve each batch before bottling. Once rinsed and filled, each bottle is capped by the trademark cork, a nod to Cognac’s winemaking tradition.
Whether served straight or in a cocktail, Grey Goose showcases a smooth, vaguely nutty feel, opening with delicate floral and citrus notes and rounding off with a bright, lingering finish. Meticulously crafted, the must-try taste sensation is a testament to nature’s finest ingredients, steeped in France’s world-class legacy.
Part of the new “Cult” series, Sylvester Stallone’s “Chaos” pen is fashioned from precious materials and produced in limited numbers. The body of the pen is made of black pearlised celluloid with overlays in sterling silver or solid 18K gold. Overlays are finished by hand by Montegrappa’s skilled craftsmen and feature an antiqued finish with accents in translucent enamel, in reds and yellows – the colors of fire. The design is characterized by the juxtaposition of life and death; the former represented by the early forms of life on Earth: reptiles (such as snakes and lizards), the latter by the skull. Carol Chow is thrilled to be joining West Vancouver’s Fraîche Restaurant as executive chef beginning April 24. A North Shore native, Carol has been working overseas for several years in London and Shanghai, as a private residence and consulting chef. Previous posts as executive chef at Gusto di Quattro, Teahouse in Stanley Park, Hart House, and the old Beachside Café round out her experience.
