GIORGIO ARMANI

LIMITED EDITION LINE OF PRODUCTS

Giorgio Armani and renowned luxury car manufacturer Bugatti are pleased to announce their collaboration for the creation of an artisanal capsule collection of small leather goods and refined clothing – Giorgio Armani for Bugatti.

G

The Italian and the French brand have come together for the first time to promote a vision of dynamic and timeless elegance. The objective of Giorgio Armani and Bugatti is to offer their customers products that are distinguished by top-quality materials and the skill evident in their creation. The Giorgio Armani for Bugatti capsule collection is made for a sophisticated man who constantly seeks out exclusive luxury. “It was very natural to come together with Bugatti. We both worship things that are made well, made to last, created out of the best materials. The capsule condenses this encounter in a series of clothes and accessories designed to be worn by men who only look for the best and who live an active and dynamic lifestyle” , said Giorgio Armani. “Cooperation with Giorgio Armani is a great honour for us,” said Wolfgang Dürheimer, President of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. “When one of the most influential and highly recognised fashion and lifestyle brands and the most exclusive super sports car brand in the world, which has its roots in art and design, join forces, this is an unusual, exciting and inspiring project. The result is an extremely well-made combination of the style and perfection of Giorgio Armani and the Bugatti brand DNA.” Accessories and garments in the capsule collection, launching for autumn/winter 2016-2017, feature details that reference the iconic motifs of the Bugatti brand. The horseshoe-shaped emblem on the front of the cars is seen on pendants for bags, while Bugatti’s brand

22

colour blue appears on inner linings of bags, in interior pockets and on the treads and insoles of footwear. The palette, focused on the three stylish and timeless colours of cognac, army green and blue, is a recurring element of the collection. The highlight of the accessories is an elegant briefcase in soft calfskin, made entirely by hand, with a convenient front pocket; there is also an exquisite version of this piece in lined matte crocodile suede, tactile and luxurious in Bugatti blue. In addition, there is a more roomy weekend bag, while small leather goods, available in calfskin or crocodile skin, include belts, wallets, iPad cases, and beauty cases featuring a prominent zip closure. Clothing includes a coat and blouson jacket in refined double cashmere, superfine cashmere sweaters, a leather jacket with raised collar and concealed hood, as well as treated denim jeans that look as soft as velvet, thanks to their handmade flocking. The offering is rounded off with calfskin sneakers with crocodile details, which have a blue interior and a Giorgio Armani for Bugatti label, a sports driver blazer in crocodile skin, available in cognac and army green, and a cap in double cashmere cloth with trim in Bugatti blue. Garments and accessories are manufactured in limited editions and numbered, and display the special logo: Giorgio Armani for Bugatti.

THE AGE OF ELECTRIC

SUPERCARS _

A DAZZLING VISION

OF THE FUTURE FROM ROLLS-ROYCE

Rolls-Royce, like no other brand, is certainly known for pushing the envelope when it comes to utmost exclusivity; synonymous with the crème de la crème of automotive luxury possessed only by the selected elite. But what happens when the cult automaker rolls out a concept car unrestrained by anything as mundane as real-life limits? The answer: the Vision Next 100, codenamed 103EX – a creation so visionary, it doesn’t bother with conventions such as steering wheels, or even a driver.

L

In their place, 103EX’s potential passengers are treated to a suitably imposing, 5.9 meters long by 1.6 metres high machine, which could more accurately be described as a cruise ship one wheels. The likeness is heightened with a smooth hull that surrounds Rolls’ iconic ‘Double R’ Pantheon grille, and catamaran-like aluminumwrapped wheels. A zero-emission drivetrain, advanced suspension, and admittedly mythical-

24

strength combustion V12 power what is bound to be an impossibly smooth “magic carpet ride”. Inside the cabin, any preconceived notions including dashboards and controls are dispensed with entirely, in favor of a large OLED screen up front. In the center, an oversized silk and wool ivory sofa sprawls, inviting riders to make the most of the restful drive. A plush ivory wool carpet sits sumptuously underfoot, with the interior wrapped in Macassar wood panelling. In lieu of a driver, the fully robotized vehicle comes with your very own virtual assistant and chaffeur, ‘Eleanor’. Backed by sophisticated artificial intelligence technologies, Eleanor’s etherealvoiced presence carries out every task you could conceivably need on or off the road: from getting the car to you and back, to keeping track of calendars and appointments, to alerting you to crucial road conditions and safety information. In a word, it’s a vaguely sci-fi futuristic fantasy come

true. With the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 we were mindful not to dwell on the past,” says Giles Taylor, Director of Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “We wanted to be as innovative as possible and at the same time transcend the design history of the marque.” The show-stopping machine was presented in a mesmerizing unveiling ceremony at London’s Roundhouse. To demonstrate one of the concept’s founding tenets, the Grand Arrival, the Vision Next 100 was shown arriving at its destination, basked in an otherworldly glow. A glass canopy lifted dramatically, just as a step emerged smoothly from under the running board, with a red lighted path alluding to a rolled-out red carpet - all perfectly befitting the automobile’s - and it’s owner’s - regal style. “The Rolls-Royce patron will continue to be a famous figure in the future,” said Rolls Royce Director of Design Giles Taylor. I envision that the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100

THE AGE OF ELECTRIC

ULTIMATE IN LUXURY

THE SPECTACULAR MERCEDES-MAYBACH 6 The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is the first luxury coupé in the series of visionary design show cars from Mercedes-Benz.

With its sensual, emotional design and intelligent details, the Vision MercedesMaybach 6 represents the ultimate in luxury. The classic aesthetic proportions of the show car – the extremely long bonnet, the low roof line and the rearward positioning of the greenhouse – recall the aero coupés of days gone by. But this is not retro design – this is a reinterpretation of classic, aesthetic principles.

W

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is designed as an electric car. Thanks to its four compact permanent magnet synchronous electric motors, it features all-wheel drive. The output of the drive system is 550 kW. The shallow underfloor battery has a usable capacity of approx. 80 kWh. This not only allows performance characteristics typical of a sports car (acceleration from 0‑100 km/h in under four seconds, top speed electronically governed at 250 km/h) but also a range of over 500 kilometres! Clearly defined contours and organically formed

26

wings stand in contrast to the sharply drawn, extended feature line on each side which defines the upper vehicle body from the radiator grille across the entire length of the vehicle to the rear. There is also a striking contrast between the Maybach red paintwork and the chrome strips which sit above the wheel arches and in the centre of the bonnet and boot lid. A reinterpretation of the Mercedes-Maybach radiator grille with its fine, vertical struts accentuates the front end. The extended, round “boat tail” format of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6’s rear recalls a luxury yacht. The front windscreen serves as a transparent display: driving-related data and geographical information is shown across its full width, augmenting the outside world with additional information. This information can be controlled and adjusted by the occupants using gestures. The dashboard wing curves across the door trim into the seat landscape, creating a 360° lounge.

The sitting surface forms a horizontal, which transitions into the vertical of the doors and finally becomes the underside of the dashboard wing. In the doors and dashboard the traditional wood trim softens the appearance of the digital control and display interfaces. As a contrast to the digital world of the displays, elm is used in the floor area, creating a refined yachting look. “Our glamorous coupé, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, represents the ultimate in contemporary luxury. It is hot and cool”, states Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG. “With its intelligent appeal and reduced, technoid look, it perfectly embodies our design philosophy of sensual purity and our pursuit of aerodynamic efficiency.”

DREAM HOMES ARCHITECTURE SPECTACULAR ARCHITECTURAL MARVELS BY SOME OF THE WORLD’S LEADING ARCHITECTS We have all fantasized about that home that dreams are made of; a dwelling we would choose and tailor to our tastes if money and talent were no object; so spectacular, it would be limited only by the imagination. But while for most of us, these fanciful castles in the sky remain a fantasy, for a handful of lucky owners, they are an incredible reality – and a unique treat for the architects and designers who get the privilege of working on them. We’ll live vicariously through these five of the world’s movers-and-shakers, whose swoon-worthy residences across the globe are the stuff real estate dreams are made of.

but it’s certainly true to the prizewinning Japanese architect’s distinct style. Edgy and minimalist in his approach, Ando is known for his manipulation of concrete, improbably uplifted with use of light, gravity, and abundant natural elements. The family residence in Monterrey, Mexico known as the ‘House in Monterrey’ sprawls over 4,900 square feet, built into the side a hill and overlooking the Sierra Las Mitras mountains 3000 feet above sea level. The threestory structure is criss-crossed with

vertical and horizontal concrete plates that play with geometry and dimensions. Massive concrete staircases appear weightlessly suspended in thin air, and a cantilevered infinity pool runs over the edge of the hill to disappear into the horizon. A double-height library, gym, wine cellar, and a gallery make the stunning home a mountain retreat unto itself. The Maui House by Nick Milkovich Architects Commissioned by the manager of David Bowie as a vacation home, this incredible Hawaii residence, designed by Vancouver’s award-winning Nick Milkovich Architects, faces the ocean on Maui’s western shore, straddling the dramatic lava rock beach. With cantilevered slab floors, sandblasted concrete walls, and wrapped with seamless glass windows that open up to the surrounding ocean expanse, the 4,500 square feet house appears to float despite its stone solidity, akin to a massive ship hovering on water’s surface. To serve the artist’s needs, a state-of-the-art recording studio was built into the first floor, while in the living room, a concert-quality sound system is concealed behind fabric wall panels, along with a giant video screen that can be lowered from the ceiling. With classic rock decor in the musician’s signature style, the stunning locale inspires work or play.

Naomi Campbell’s Spaceship House by Zaha Hadid Some men get their loved ones flowers or candy. Others, like supermodel’s Naomi Campbell’s boyfriend Vladislav Doronin, go a bit bigger. The Russian tycoon commissioned renowned Turkish architect Zaha Hadid, known for her quirky, outof-the-box-style, to build his beloved a new home in Moscow’s exclusive Ryublevka region; a house so otherworldly, it is said to resemble a spaceship. With one section rising 20 meters above ground, the white futuristic structure looks like something out of a science film: smooth curves, low-slung planes, and plenty of glass. The interior is just as extraordinary, with soaring ceilings, sleek shapes, and panelled windows

framing the surrounding pine woods. At 2,650 square meters, the home features a gym, swimming pool, and three separate spa areas: Finnish, Turkish, and a traditional Russian bath. With a gesture as dramatic as the home itself, Doronin has certainly raised the bar for love tokens. Yabu Pushelberg’s NY Apartment Award-winning designers George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg of Yabu Pushelberg have brought to life their share of spectacularly sleek contemporary spaces. But when it comes to their own primary residence, a sundrenched apartment in New York’s renowned Richard Meier building, the dynamic design duo certainly went the extra mile – or ten; infusing their home not only with their signature bright, modern style, but also with the warmth and character that can only come from the touch of a true owner. Minimalistic in style, the 4,000 square feet apartment is punctuated with unique detail, art, and stories. Whites, woods, light palettes and crisp modern forms create a neutral foundation for plenty of personality, at times eclectic: Japanese art, Parisian screens, a Brazilian jacaranda credenza, an Italian rug topping travertine floors. A log bench in the hall was originally a fallen tree from India, found at the bottom of a lake, and a crystal deer head on the wall made by a Japanese artist. Looking out at the Hudson River from its perch inside the glass-wrapped tower, the beautiful home is a tribute to the couple’s life and work, and to New York itself.

areas and take freelance opportunities to develop a broader skill set. So if there is something that a client needs to have shot - in any area we have the expertise to provide it, we can do it - but again, our focus is on real estate. Q. What’s been your favourite subject you’ve photographed so far? A. So far my favourite has been shooting show homes for the SAM Awards. The builders take so much time and care to make sure that these show homes are absolutely perfect and it shows. We get excited when we shoot these show homes because we can take the time to make every shot perfect and add the little accent lighting and dramatic lighting to make an image really stand out. That is where we have the opportunity to really showcase our abilities. Q. Share with us your vision and goal for Calgary Photos. A. We are photographers by profession and people hire us for our photography skills. But in every instance when we shoot we are not shooting to take a photograph - we are there to help the home owner sell their home, or help a builder promote their new builds and developers sell communities. Therefore our focus, as much as it is on proper composition, exposure and lighting, it is also on the presentation of the product, and creating the relationship with the client and home owner. We feel that when someone hires us to photograph their home, we are joining them in their goal to sell the home and we take ownership of that goal.

Q. You must have had a range of experiences taking pictures in fascinating & beautiful homes all over this city. Share with us some funny or interesting stories. A. Most of our stories are either too embarrassing to share publicly or too heart breaking to tell during these tough times. However I can say that we have pretty much seen everything from the most amazing luxury homes, to the most run down hovel. We shot a place where the only bathroom was an addition to the original home. We have even seen a living room that was bigger than the lobby of the Fairmont Hotel. We have seen houses with shag carpet in the bathrooms and kitchens, we have seen hardwood flooring on ceilings and some of the most amazing feats of engineering which make you stand back and wonder how the place could ever stay standing. But regardless of what the home is like - we always enjoy meeting the home owners and hearing their stories and their experiences with their homes, because really in the end our goal is the same as theirs: to help sell their home to someone who will love it like they did. calgaryphotos.ca

ELEGANT & STYLISH BOY-FRIEND WATCH

W I T H A T OUCH OF A DROGY NY WORDS: KATE MISSINE

T

The tradition of menswear inspirations showing up amidst the most feminine of fashions is one that has been well-honored by time. Each fall, runways gear up with grey tweeds and

herringbones, wide-leg trousers and strong-shouldered blazers. And if there is one couture visionary who can be credited with pioneering the boy-meets-girl movement, it’s undoubtedly the inimitable Gabrielle Chanel.

In her day, the couturiere may have been considered daring for pairing her pearls with rough flannel; today, it is a recognizable, easy association – as comfortable as, say, borrowing your boyfriend’s wool sweater to cuddle up in. In the last several years, in fact, the “boyfriend” label has crept up in women’s styles everywhere, from jeans to cardigans to oversized watches; indicating a relaxed, easy chic with a touch of androgyny. And watches – the ultimate male accessory that has made a foray into the female realm – is where the Chanel house has turned its sights upon last year, with the debut of the Chanel Boy.Friend ladies’ watch in the summer of 2015.

74

75

76

Unlike the traditional ‘boyish’-inspired chunky wristwatch that has enjoyed recent popularity, the

Boy.Friend’s

gendered

theme

comes

across as extremely subtle. With a name that appears to pay homage to Gabrielle Chanel’s partner, nicknamed ‘Boy’, as well as to the masculine feel, the collection’s overall inspiration clearly draws upon a predecessor, Chanel’s iconic Premiere watch introduced in 1987.

Slender and simple, the Boy.Friend is more of a play on the effortless ‘borrowedfrom-your-boyfriend’ style than a straight allusion to a man’s watch, combining a larger, geometric case and pared-down black crocodile strap with delicate gold and diamonds. Just as in the Premiere, the octagonal case references the shape of the crystal stopper on Chanel’s legendary #5 perfume bottle, which, in turn, takes cue from Paris’ geometric Place Vendome, one of Gabrielle’s favorite forms.

Softened corners, a guilloche finish and recessed bezel set the Boy.Friend apart in its sleek, minimalist silhouette. The watch comes in two sizes – the XL, measuring 37 by 28.60 mm, and Medium, 34.60 x 26.70, available in a choice of white or beige gold, Chanel’s exclusive alloy that speaks to Coco’s fondness for the classic hue, with optional diamonds on the bezel.

77

A new addition to the collection is this fall’s Tweed version. Featuring a woven steel bracelet that recalls tweed’s texture, it’s a nod to the traditional fabric that has become Chanel’s signature.

The Boy.Friend watch collection is available at Chanel boutiques and authorized Fine Jewellers.

ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

T U A B E L L A C

W

World renowned Belgian born ecological architect, Vincent

Callebaut, is highly acclaimed & awarded for his fantastical

projects and futuristic thinking, addressing our planet’s need for environment friendly and energy conscious buildings. Luxury Living

Magazine had the privilege to talk to this visionary architect who’s committed his life to finding solutions for a sustainable future for our world and our successive generations.

81

Q. What is the true purpose of architecture in your opinion? The real purpose of architecture and contemporary urban planning is to build green cities, dense and connected. Sustainable Cities respecting the environment and biodiversity. In full global population boom, the role of architecture is to offer the best quality of life for everyone without compromising the fate of future generations. We are experiencing the third industrial revolution where the combination of ICT (Information and Communication) and renewable energy cubes allow us today to build a sustainable habitat (sustainable) capable of implementing the famous energy transition promised by the COP 21 last December in Paris. Well beyond the technical advances, consumers become today “consum-actors” (prosumers). The citizen and participatory habitat takes the lead and makes a real social innovation “bottom-up” at the heart of our cities and our countryside! Because yes, our campaigns are also being revolutionized. The 20th

82

century was the century of oil, green chemicals and steel. The 21st century will be biological or will not! Q. Do you think we need to change the way we teach architecture in schools to bring about a substantial businesses change in the way architects & planners think and design? In the 20th century, we learned as students to design inert buildings, extremely energy-intensive, dependent on a hyper-centralized energy system. In the 21st century, young architects must learn to develop metabolic positive energy buildings, that is to say, producing more energy than they consume. Buildings constructed from bio-based materials, taking care to renew what is taken from nature and respecting its rate of natural regeneration. Our objective should be to emulate mature ecosystems such as the Amazon forest that produces no waste

83

84

that cannot be recycled and that only uses photosynthesis as the source of energy. Transforming our cities into ecosystems, our neighbourhoods into forests, inhabited buildings into trees! We should take inspiration from shapes and structures that nature has set up since 3.8 billion years. Q. Tell us a little about your research project ‘Smart City Paris 2050’. What other exciting projects are you Involved in at the moment? As part of the Climate Energy Plan of the City of Paris which aims to reduce 75% of the greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, the “SMART CITY PARIS 2050” project is a work of reflection and research on integration of Large Buildings Heights positive energy (BEPOS) and several energy producers to the neighbourhoods where they are located. To fight against the effect of urban heat island while densifying the city permanently, this study presents 8 prototypes of mixed towers. These towers repatriate nature in the heart of the city as urban agriculture and vertical farms and incorporate in their design the rules of bioclimatic and renewable and recoverable short loop through innovative systems. We want above all, to invent new eco-friendly lifestyles to improve the quality of life of citizens in respect of the environment. This study was conducted for the Paris City Hall by my agency “Vincent Callebaut Architectures” in close collaboration with engineers from “Setec Bâtiment”. The concept of “Smart City” is implemented in emerging countries like Masdar in the desert or in Songdo in the middle of rice fields. But the real challenge is to rethink our European cities and integrating the best of every era into our future. Since developing the plan “Paris 2050 Smart City”, we have been in great demand by European capitals to develop the concept of “Energy Solidarity” between the intrinsic architectural heritage in Europe and new metabolic buildings. The latter produces the energy necessary to facilitate the former. Based on that concept, we’re developing projects in Geneva, Brussels, Luxembourg and Madrid with this triple revolution in sociology, energy and agriculture. Q. Has there beens Any significant Influencers or heroes in your life? Who do you admire? I admire the time in which I live. Since I turned thirty, I’ve been hearing constantly that we are at the crossroads of a crises: economic crisis, environmental crisis, political crisis. As the owner of my company and having the will to act, I never let myself be trapped in this negative wave of atmosphere. I am an optimist and I believe that this new century is wonderful. Humans realize that they must re-invent their method of practicing agriculture to green chemicals, GMOs and hybrid seeds to organic agriculture democratized based on agroecology and permaculture. ICT is currently dematerialise our modes of transport, work and our relationships with others. The cities finally repatriate the nature in our lifestyles. Individualism is now up to the fair and solidarity economy, a true new more human and sustainable model. Today’s hero in everyone of us by his actions implements all these transitions. Q. How would you like to see buildings change over the next 50 years? We can’t ask architects to develop buildings that are durable in the long term with a short-term economy based on immediate profit! I hope that the economic model will evolve thanks to the policies, the developers and the innovative investors who bet on the medium term by developing sober carbon buildings during their construction and operation. Today this is a realizable utopia that we demonstrate with our Tao Zhu Yin Yuan “tree-tower” under construction in Taipei or again with our multifunctional solar islet The Gate Heliopolis under construction in Cairo.

The new collaboration, which happens to be Roche Bobois’ very first hospitality project, will present an exclusive take on two 1,900 square foot suites, located on the hotel’s highest 25th and 26th floors. Each suite will receive a full makeover from the Roche Bobois design team: inspired by the company’s tradition of collaborating with renowned couturiers such as Gaultier and Missoni, the interiors will showcase the cutting-edge, high-fashion style synonymous with the brand, integrating elements from its recent partnership with Christian Lacroix.

Throughout June 2016, Vancouver’s new Chanel boutique triumphed by attracting crowds of ladies in waiting – queuing to experience its newest store, a seamlessly designed montage of the iconic fashion house’s aesthetics.

From Chanel’s famous colours (black, white, beige, gold, red) and logo to its expression as a contemporary art commissioner, its new salon housed within Holt Renfrew at 737 Dunsmuir Street, epitomizes the global brand and showcases ready-to-wear collections, shoes, handbags, accessories, and fine jewelry. Yet beyond the ethereal beauties that serve as spokes models for the brand - the most recent being actress, Keira Knightly - the historical roots of the label reveal an astonishing story of its founder, Gabrielle (“Coco”) Chanel (1883-1971). Choosing to believe that her father had relocated to America where he was trying to make his fortune, the young designer chose to invent her life from an early age. Surrounded by Baroque art and architecture of the French cathedrals she attended influenced the gold adornments she referenced along with the prevalence of black and white worn by nun and church mourners, which comprise her designs

Eventually, Chanel opened up her atelier studio in 1913 in Paris, quickly making her mark with the upper class due to her startlingly austere and elegant garments – markedly different than the highly structured gowns and elaborate hats of the Belle Époque. Over the next 3 decades before the start of World War II, Chanel established herself (and itself) as an impressive label. (For more history on Chanel visit inside.chanel.com) Throughout her life, Chanel (she like the nickname “Coco” after a song she regularly performed when signing in cabarets), would adopt and infuse emblems and references into her distinct stylistic repertoire. These included the lion (she was born under the sign Leo), the use of tweed (an influence from one of her love interests, the Duke of Westminster), the Camellia flower (a flower found in Asia), and the little black dress

among many others. The newly opened store in Vancouver is a full sensory experience of what the brand, Chanel, encompasses. The store’s furnishings, fabrics and materials mimic her own apartment at 31 rue Cambon, where she lived above her ateliers and near her couturier. From luxury jewelry (the store has displayed a $3 million dollar brooch) to shoes, purses, and ready-to-wear fashion, Chanel also exhibits some wonderful contemporary art amongst its showroom. These artists include: Nancy Lorenzo who created the black lacquer wall screens with gold embossed Camellia flowers, sculptor Shelter Serra who was commissioned by Chanel to create images of the Camellia in pearls, and Mark Swanson, an artist who created an exclusive hanging sculpture of five crystal-embellished antlers which are featured in the exclusive VIP fitting rooms.

ROYAL PYTHON SKELETON TOURBILLON SHOWCASES A DESIGN REVOLUTION

The Ulysse Nardin Skeleton timepiece is a transparent beauty, where the inner workings become the art form. It shares its fluid network of positive and negative space intertwined ever so delicately with its wearer. The seemingly infinite maze of individual movements, parts and bridges are reduced to essential composition and masterfully reinterpreted into a rare piece of work. The Royal Python Skeleton Tourbillon takes the beautiful complexity of its predecessor to an entirely new level.

T

Natural, free-flowing light passes through the timepiece, creating radiant luminosity. Silicium technology and an in-house-developed flying

tourbillon honor the mechanics of the collection, featuring a silicium balance spring, anchor and escapement wheel. Hand-painted movement bridges dotted with rubies reveal the skill and sensibility of the artist, while exhibiting the wondrous world of Ulysse Nardin’s métiers d’art. A python strap finishes the snakeskin-inspired aesthetic of the entire timepiece. Lush like the jungle, this “call of the wild” timekeeper is as original in style as it is in makeup. A limited edition of 18 pieces in rose gold 4N, the Royal Python Skeleton Tourbillon presents a fearless character intended for the uninhibited at heart.

The sleek and beautiful 37-foot Aston Martin AM37 powerboat made its world debut at the Monaco Yacht Show, marking the luxury British brand’s entry into the nautical world. The new day-cruiser is offered in two versions with the AM37S expected to reach speeds of 50 knots.

T

Aston Martin’s EVP & Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman and his design team collaborated closely with naval architect Mulder Design to ensure every element of the project was carefully considered. Sharing creative expertise and specialist skills, Quintessence Yachts engineered the Aston Martin design into an innovative powerboat for the yachting world. Reichman commented: “AM37 is a pure translation of the Aston Martin DNA into an entirely new maritime concept. The powerboat reflects our values in terms of power, beauty and soul. The most important attribute for Aston Martin is the design language and proportion, we have transferred this DNA into AM37 - a striking boat with fantastic proportion and elegance.”

The AM37 is a day cruiser that can be transformed into an overnight berth by transforming the table into a comfortable bed. The cabin is well appointed with mood lighting and air-conditioning. With a refrigerator, microwave oven and coffee machine - and a lavatory on board, absolute comfort is guaranteed. Crafted from the finest leathers, elegantly laid out rear seating is available for up to eight people. The exterior of AM37 features dynamic proportions in a design that is simple, yet immaculately executed. The boat is set apart by the attention to detail in every element of its design. The wraparound windscreen has been created from a single piece of sculpted glass fluidly draped over the AM37’s foredeck. With extreme double curvature it sets a new industry standard. Sliding deck technology allows owners to cover the cockpit of the boat completely at the touch of a button. The three lightweight carbon panels, operated by the AM37 key, fold under the aft deck when the cockpit is uncovered. An electro-hydraulic carbon fibre bimini top is stowed under the engine hatch when not in use and, extending from the aft deck, a swim platform allows for easy access to the water.

ICONS & LEGENDS

WHO IS

LOUIS CHIRON? Getting to know the legend after whom Bugatti named it’s most extreme supercar, the Bugatti Chiron Louis Alexandre Chiron was born in Monte Carlo on August 3, 1899. The Monegasque was one of the most successful racing drivers of his era. No other driver is so closely connected with the name of Bugatti and no other achieved such countless successes with racing cars from Alsace. During his career, he drove vehicles of many brands but he spent the most significant years of his career in the cockpit of a Bugatti.

L

Born the son of the “maître d’” at the Hôtel de Paris in Monaco, Chiron lost his mother at a very early age and spent much of his childhood with his grandfather, a vintner from Provence. During a visit to his father’s workplace, he was noticed by a childless Russian noblewoman who took the boy under her wings and supported his education. Chiron was taught to drive at the age of 15 by his benefactress’s chauffeur. In the First World War, his driving ability helped him to become a chauffeur to the general staff, driving military leaders such as Pétain and Foch at the headquarters of the French army. Following the end of the war, Chiron became a car dealer, opening a garage and showroom in Nice with William Charles Grover. The two established contact with Ernest Friderich, a former racing driver who had been a Bugatti dealer in Nice since 1924. Both Grover, later a successful racing driver himself under the pseudonym of “Williams”, and Chiron were familiarised with motorsport by Friderich. Chiron initially drove Bugattis from the factory in Molsheim to the Côte d’Azur for Friderich. These trips proved to be good training and Chiron also made the acquaintance of Ettore Bugatti. Chiron earned his first accolades in a number of hill climbs in the south of France, driving a Brescia Bugatti. In 1925, he won several races as a private entrant in a Bugatti Type 30 and completed the season as the champion of the Automobile Club de Nice. A short time afterwards, he met Alice “Baby” Hoffmann-Trobeck, who was married to Alfred Hoffmann, heir to the Hoffmann-La Roche pharmaceutical company. He was so enthusiastic about Chiron’s driving skills that he bought him

100

a Type 35 – one of the most successful racing cars of all time – for the 1926 season. This was the beginning of the talented Monegasque’s successful racing career. A number of significant victories meant that the name of Chiron became synonymous with the Bugatti brand. In the same year, Louis Chiron won his first significant circuit race, the Comminges Grand Prix, as well as a number of hill climbs. He started the 1927 season with the more powerful Type 35 B, not only winning the Grand Prix of the French Automobile Club but also gaining the attention of Ettore Bugatti himself. In 1928, the 29-year-old became the number one driver in the Bugatti works team. Driving the Type 35C, he won a dozen races at venues such as Rome, Reims and San Sebastian as well as the European Grand Prix in Monza. For the next four years, Chiron remained the star of the Bugatti Team. In 1929, he entered races with a variety of Bugatti models almost every weekend. He even won the Swiss Klausen hill climb, the most challenging hill race in its time. In 1930 he managed to replicate this triumph with Bugatti’s legendary 16-cylinder Type 45. In 1931, Bugatti launched the highly promising Type 51, and Chiron won the Monaco Grand Prix, the first and to date the only Monegasque to do so. He had reached the pinnacle of his career and was considered to be the world’s best racing driver. In 1933, Chiron left the company and founded the private racing team “CC” with Rudolf Caracciola. However, the team quickly collapsed following Caracciola’s accident in Monaco the same year. He then went to Scuderia Ferrari and Mercedes – but without achieving any great success. Following the Second World War, he won the French Grand Prix twice. Louis Chiron drove in his last Grand Prix in Monaco in 1955, when he was almost 56. This makes him the oldest driver to compete in a Formula One race to this day. Afterwards, Chiron was asked by Prince Rainier III to serve as racing director for the two most important motorsports events of the principality, the Monte Carlo Rally and the Monaco Grand Prix. Chiron continued in this role until his death in Monte Carlo on June 22, 1979.

CALGARY’S FINEST

B

Banbury Lane Design Centre has been a significant part of Calgary’s fabric since 1986: Introducing

high quality ornamental hardware to home decor enthusiasts when it was not commonly available in Calgary. The brainchild of Peter Howell, this Calgary retail store has now grown three times over its

lifespan to Calgary’s finest home hardware provider. We spoke to the owners Lynne Drover and Jonathan Howell to learn a little more about their history and their ongoing endeavours to stay on top of their game and provide the superior quality service that their customers have been accustomed to for 30 years.

104

Q. I understand Peter started this business 30 years ago in a 500 square foot showroom! What was Peter’s vision and inspiration behind starting Banbury Lane? Where does the name ‘Banbury Lane’ come from? Lynne: Peter had an older home in Mount Royal and could not find all the decorative hardware to renovate it. We worked together at Revelstoke Building, which was a traditional hardware and lumber supply chain. When getting laid off from there Peter decided to start up Banbury Lane. He originally wanted to have a number of locations, but came to realize that the best way to succeed was the hands on approach, so decided to concentrate on Calgary. Banbury Lane came from a name in England where Peter grew up. Q. Lynne, you’ve been involved in this venture for 28 years..how have you seen the business change and grow? Lynne: In the years that I have been involved, we have expanded the store three times. We have evolved from mostly brass traditional hardware to all styles and finishes. We have expanded our range of product lines immensely to include all price points from the economical to the very exclusive. We have clients who have supported us for as many as 25 years (including contractors, designers and home owners). We have gone from a single person operation to one with more than 10 people involved. Q. What was your biggest challenge taking over your father’s business after he retired? Jonathan: By far the biggest challenge taking over my fathers business was; not wanting to disappoint him by screwing things up. Luckily we have enjoyed moderate success and have been able to expand the business, so my dad is very proud of my accomplishments, which is amazing. I know that if everything had not worked out the way it has, my dad would still have been supportive and it would not have affected our relationship at all, that’s just the type of father he is. But luckily things did work out great, so it’s a happy ending to the story. Q. What was your most incredible / memorable year ever and why? Lynne: That would be 2013 when we moved into our new location. We were able to design and build the space to our liking. It was a lot of hard work, but once we were into the space, it was very rewarding. When we had our official opening party in October, we had clients and vendors not just from Calgary but from across Canada and the US come to help celebrate with us. Q. Where do you get your inspiration & ideas from? Jonathan: So much of what we do at Banbury really is geared around having the best selection, nicest showroom and best customer service in the industry. If you keep these three fundamentals as your guiding principles, that really is all the inspiration you need, that is what we have espoused to do since my dad opened the doors in 1986. I think if you stick to those foals, success will become much more attainable.

Photos by: CALGARY PHOTOS

105

Q. What do you do to keep yourself informed and up to date with new design and ideas? Jonathan: So much of what we do is customer driven. If people want a certain look and we don’t have it, I make it my mission to find and get it if it does exist. We attend shows throughout the America’s to keep on top of trends in the hardware industry. My furthest jaunt was a trip to Brazil, where I was able to see cutting edge trends that have made a huge impact to our business. Since we import a fair bit from Brazil, the Brazilian export development office invited me to attend the final game of the FiFA world cup, this made the trip all that much better! Q. Lynne you’ve worked with both Peter & Jonathan (Father & Son)...what’s similar about their work styles? Are they very different? Lynne: Peter and Jon both enjoyed dealing with clients. They try to ensure that the clients have a good experience and the end result is what they want. Peter and Jon are also more of the visionary type of personality where I am more of a practical person. This gives a good balance to the business. Q. How do you plan meet the challenges of the Calgary economy? Jonathan: The way we have dealt with challenging economic times in the past is exactly the way we will approach the recession. Cut costs as much as possible! So much of what we sell is special ordered for our clients, essentially we just order less from our vendors. Often when new builds slowdown in Calgary, there is an uptick in the renovation market. So we will do everything we can to capitalize on that market. Keeping a positive attitude goes

106

a long way as well. With Calgary being such a boom and bust market, we definitely try to use the slower times to catch up on the business that may have been neglected during busy times. We introduced a new website last year, and are now looking at investing in new inventory management and point of sale system. So taking advantage of the slower times is definitely a crucial key to success in business. Lynne: We have been through the ups and downs in Calgary a number of times now. Being as well established as we are, we can plan things to stay in the game. We watch our inventory closer, keep track of controllable expenses and reduce those where we can. We do not stop hunting for those special lines of products that are different and unique. We find that our client’s projects are generally long term and can take up to 2 years to complete, so as the economy is starting to revive, the builders that have slowed down a bit can actually take on new projects a bit faster. Q. What’s the one thing you love about this business? Jonathan: Meeting so many amazing people is by far the best part of the job. We have had customers who are on their 7th home built with us. Our customers are fiercely loyal to us, which is the best compliment we could ever receive. Many of my friend’s parents are some of our best customers, so it’s nice to deal with people I know on a regular basis. Now as I am getting older myself, many of my friends are starting to build homes as well, which is nice to have; friends supporting friends. URBAN F RM _

IN PASONA H.Q. TOKYO Cities and farms have been growing further apart for a while. Farms need vast tracts of lands with fertile soil and minimal residential development. Cities on the other hand pack as many people as they can into as small a space as possible. Then they pave the rest of the city so people can scurry off to work. It’s hard to find nature in an urban metropolis.

ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

A 9-STORY

The divide has only grown over the past few years, but one Kono Designs is looking to disrupt that. In 2010, Kono Designs turned Pasona Group’s Tokyo Headquarters into an Urban Farm. Kono Designs was founded by Japanese architect Yoshimi Kono who wanted to focus on designs that improved and took on a life of their own.

That’s what he did with the Pasona Urban Farm. The goal was to create a work environment that was in symbiosis with nature. With more than 200 types of fruits and vegetables growing on their balconies, walls and ceilings, it’s easy to say they’ve succeeded. This ambitious project has won the company a number of architectural and farming awards in

As the Japanese working population declines and people are being further concentrated into big cities, the surrounding rural regions and their key industries are suffering as a result. As such, our founder and CEO Mr. Yasuyuki Nambu has made “regional revitalization” a central tenet of our business, and the agricultural industry is vital to his vision to inject new life into these areas. Japan and the United States. In addition to providing its employees with fresh food and air, the urban farm helps reduce energy costs by keeping the building cool. Pollution normally caused by transporting farmed goods is also eliminated. They cut the farm-to-office distance down to a solid 0. Access to freshly farmed goods in Japan is getting harder since there’s a shortage of land available for farming. The Urban Farm added 43,000 square feet of green space in a 50-year-old building that originally provided zero. No space goes to waste in the urban farm either. Aside from the walls, balconies and ceilings; there’s a rooftop garden that

108

doubles as a beer garden in the summer. Lemon and passion fruit trees serve as dividers for meeting rooms. Hydroponic tomatoes grow in guest room, cucumbers and pumpkins greet people at reception and shelves grow salad leaves. The Kono Group is a pioneer in urban farming, but they don’t want to be ahead of the crowd, they want the crowd to join them. The nine-story urban farm also helps teach and train Japanese farmers in food production. It’s mere existence already sparks curiosity and encourages citydwellers to rethink their own urban space. The green facade that greets the city changes with the seasons and reminds us all that even if we’re surrounded by buildings, we inhabit a living, breathing world.
