Every three years since 1973, sailors from around the world have come together to compete in what has been called “the world’s premier global race and one of the most demanding team sporting events in the world,” and even considered the ‘Everest of Sailing.’ Formally known as the Whitbread Round the World Race, the re-branded Volvo Ocean Race was run for the first time in


2001-02. This past October, seven teams have set sail off the shores of Alicante, Spain to compete in the epic 2011-12 race. Each entry has a sailing team of 11 professional crew members all with tremendous skill, who’s physical endurance and competitive spirits are put to the test as they race day and night, for up to 20 days during some legs.

Over the nine grueling months the teams are at sea, they will experience life at extremes.
