Ever since Coco transformed couture with her effortlessly impeccable styles over a century ago, the house of Chanel has remained synonymous with exclusive, timeless elegance, its interlocking C’s garnering worship of fashion mavens worldwide.

Debuted in 1987, Chanel’s iconic Premiere was, true to its name, a first in the world of women’s watches – the first to be created by a luxury house, with a unique design not derived from masculine pieces. The style is inspired by the Chanel No. 5 perfume bottle stopper, with the chain bracelet conjuring the legendary Chanel handbags.

If you remember from Meteorology 101, the Fujita scale pegs the strongest tornado as an F5, with winds of 261 to 318 mph, so it’s a fitting name for this next-generation Venom that’s the very definition of power and speed. The F5’s bold, lower-drag shape, additional power and enhanced technology will push this Texasbuilt hypercar to velocities previously unimagined for a road-legal, series-produced vehicle. “We are very excited about this next chapter of the Venom, which brings forth an all-new design that is not only a powerful and unique statement that our clients are looking for, but a vehicle that will achieve even higher performance through improved aerodynamics,” said company president and founder John Hennessey. “We learned a great deal during the development of the Venom GT in breaking the 270-mph barrier, and we bring that experience to this new design as we look toward raising the performance bar even higher.” The laws of physics are immutable, so the step up from the Venom GT’s 270.49-mph world record speed will come from both an increase in power and a reduction in drag from the clean-sheet carbon-fiber body. The drag coefficient drops from 0.44 to below 0.40 while still generating significant downforce through both the upper body shape and underbody venturis, a rear diffuser beneath the rear bumper and a retractable rear wing. The next-generation twin-turbo powertrain is still under development, but turbo size for the longitudinally mounted V8 is increased, and the fuel system and intercooler capacity are upgraded to handle the demands of increased boost. Hard numbers for power are not yet available, but it’s conceivable that output could exceed 1400 bhp. Pennzoil will continue as a key technology partner, and its Ultra Platinum full synthetic oil—

EchoHaven EQuilibriumTM project is a 2,425 sq. ft home with a main floor and finished lower floor with a south facing ‘walk-out’ located in Calgary. The key objective of the EchoHaven project team was to design and build a home that is energy efficient and is predicted to produce almost as much energy as it consumes in a year. EchoHaven employed a two-stage strategy to achieve a predicted near net-zero annual energy consumption. The first strategy was to design and optimize solar orientation and utilize energy efficient building envelope features. Optimal solar potential is achieved by orienting the building to face south and the north portion of the lower floor foundation is partially buried in the hillside. The use of large south facing windows contribute to passive solar heating, and the 16 mm (5/8”) drywall on interior walls, and the concrete floors, help to absorb and retain daytime heat gains which are released as the inside temperature cools in the evening. The building envelope is highly insulated and well-sealed. The basement concrete floor slab rests on 19 cm (7.5”) of compacted gravel over 20 cm (8”)


of extruded polystyrene (EPS) Type II rigid insulation, yielding an RSI value of 5.6 (R-32). The lower floor exterior walls are pressure treated wood frame on a wood footing. The walls have 10 cm (4”) of EPS insulation on the outside of the sheathing and 15 cm (6”) of closed-cell (2 lb/ft3) polyurethane spray foam between the studs. This assembly yields an RSI value of 9.5 (R-54). In order to provide protection for the footings from potential freezing and thawing of adjacent soil, a ‘skirt’ of EPS rigid foam insulation extends 1.2 m (4 ft.) out from the foundation wall in locations where the height from the footing to the finish grade is 1.8 m (72”) or less. The second strategy was to install renewable energy systems, i.e. the electricity generating photovoltaic panels and the solar hot water heating system. These systems are predicted to have sufficient combined capacity to nearly meet the home’s reduced energy requirements on an annual basis. A grid-connected 5.46 kW PV array of 26,210 watt modules is mounted on the south face of the

standing seam metal roof and is expected to generate 6,900 kWh/yr. The system uses micro-inverters, also mounted on the roof. PV electrical energy is first used by any demands in the house; any excess is fed to the grid. The position of the collectors will enable easy cleaning and the vertical mounting will help improve solar gains in winter. The custom made collectors, which total 5.2 m2 (56 sq. ft.) of collection area, are predicted to produce approximately 1,900 kWh/yr of heat energy, providing about 59% of the domestic hot water energy needs of the home. They are connected to a 341 litre (75 imp. gal.) hot water storage tank. When the water temperature in the tank is higher than required for domestic use, excess heat is directed to a ‘heat dump loop’ imbedded in the gravel under the concrete slab. When the water temperature is insufficient to meet domestic needs, a separate “on-demand” backup electric water heater ensures proper hot water temperature. As a result of the energy-efficient technologies and practices included in this new house, the annual net energy consumption is predicted to be near net-zero.

Stealing the spotlight at the Geneva Motor Show is no simple feat – but with its head-turning curves, the Maserati Alfieri concept managed to do just that. Named after the Italian marque’s founder, the Alfieri is a tribute to Maserati racing heritage, particularly channeling the legendary 1954 Maserati A6 GCS. More than a nostalgic throwback, however, the historic details are injected into an entirely futuristic concept, defining Maserati’s unstoppable vision. A creation of design guru Lorenzo Ramaciotti, the Alfieri sits at 180.7 inches long and 50.4 inches high, with the curved, dramatic exterior interpreting an unmistakably Maserati feel. A bold grille emphasizes the low, lengthened front alongside bi-xenon LED headlamps, and the staggered-diameter forged aluminum wheels are set with decorative spokes, 1950s style. The riveting form is finished with a sensual shade of Steel Flair, evoking “a metallic veil draped over a naked body”, while the wheel spokes, grille, air ducts, and rear diffuser are highlighted in signature Maserati Blue, including a blue Alfieri signature on the rear reproduced from the company’s archives. Under the distinctive hood is a naturally aspirated 4.7-liter V8, pumping 460 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automated manual gearbox, limited-slip rear differential, and a 106.3 inch wheelbase add up

to pure, powerful control, as do the carbon-ceramic brake discs, borrowed from the Maserati GranTurismo Stradale. The interior does not compromise on sensuality either, with sleek, 2+2 seating handmade in two-tone Luna white and dark Basalt blue aniline leather, which also envelops the dash and central console. A TUFT screen centers the dashboard, while copper-toned accents and a floor imitating oxidized steel, commonly used in 1950s race cars, complete the nod to Maserati’s grand tradition.
