A home rooted in history and filled with antiques and vintage finds grows alongside worldclass vines in St. Helena.

San Francisco artist Denise Fiedler’s main tools are the sharp scissors she uses to craft her vivid, color-filled collages.

This Atherton residence draws its inspiration from the owner, a clothing designer with a love of color and an eye for interiors.

Enamored of their modern mountain getaway, a Bay Area family decides to bring its style to their primary abode.

A Valet Custom wall bed can transform an office, upstairs landing, backyard bonus room, and even a family or living room into a guestroom in less than 5 seconds. We can create a fully built-in wall-to-wall cabinetry solution for any area of your home that matches your decor with the beauty of fine furniture.

muLtIPLy tHE SQuARE FootAGE IN youR HomE Whether you are trying to make the most of a specific room in your home or have a small space such as an urban condo/studio, a wall bed allows you to multiply your square footage, taking up as little as 17” of depth when it is closed. This holds true for granny units, too, that can accommodate guests or bring in extra income as short-term or long-term rentals. If your space is narrow, as many studios are, our side-tilt beds may be the perfect solution for you.

youR PICK oF SIZES Twin, full, or even a queen-size bed, in either vertical-tilt or side-tilt orientation, allows Valet Custom to create a wall bed solution perfect for your space. Our beds can also accommodate any standard spring coil mattress up to 11” in height so no comfort is lost for your guests.

Recently, we have brought on many new, popular finishes that showcase the current popularity of contemporary design. Visit one of our showrooms to see firsthand.

EASE oF oPERAtIoN A properly installed wall bed with a fine mechanism will easily open and shut with no more effort than the pull/lift of a couple fingers. Valet Custom accomplishes this with precision cabinetry manufactured in its own factory, certified installers, and by using the finest quality mechanism balanced to the weight of the mattress at the time of installation.

This issue of Luxe is essentially a love letter to the people who make design happen. In addition to our annual GOLD LIST, which recognizes talents from across the country who have had their projects featured in our pages the past year, we celebrate creative originators and innovators: a community and collective of people who are grounded in their craft and dedicated to pushing design forward. We thank all of you for imagining and enriching the homes we live in. As the rhythms of daily life begin to return, and the pandemic recedes into the rear view, I am hopeful that the meaningfulness of home, and the people who reimagine the spaces of our everyday life, will remain in our hearts and minds.

Luxe celebrates people in design, including interior designers Rayman Boozer (above), Martyn Lawrence Bullard (middle) and Young Huh (right).

Healthy Planet. Healthy People. Healthy Lifestyles. 2022 IS THE YEAR OF THE HEALTHY KITCHEN. In many ways, true wellness begins in the kitchen. It is where we give our body the nutrition it needs, where we spend time bonding with loved ones over culinary projects, where we learn recipes and engage our most creative selves in the process. And at the heart of this high-performance heart of the home is its appliance suite. That’s where Beko comes in. A global appliance manufacturer with a product presence in 400 million homes in 140 countries, Beko is driven by a three-fold commitment to helping people be well through the production of appliances that promote health. The brand also believes that healthy people are only possible on a healthy planet, so it employs a zero-carbon manufacturing process. Its products are full of eco-friendly innovations and continually achieve ENERGY STAR certifications.

In 2022, Beko is taking it all a step further. It introduces the Healthy Kitchen Council, which comprises leading kitchen and home designers, nutritionists, dietitians and other health and wellness experts who will help the brand shape the concept of the ultimate healthy kitchen. As part of the initiative, Beko will present 22 new cooking, cooling and cleaning products equipped with proprietary technologies and features to empower Americans to lead healthier, more sustainable lives.

TOASTWORTHY BOOKER VINEYARD

In Paso Robles wine country, amidst the hills and vines of Booker Vineyard’s 100-acre property, is a new tasting venue with a lounge-y vibe that invites guests to gather with friends, settle in and make themselves at home. Signum Architecture’s minimalist design honors the winery’s natural surroundings, matching the sensibilities of owner and vintner Eric Jensen, whose respect for the land is central to his winemaking approach. The fracture patterns of the area’s limestone soil, for example, were used as the basis for the layout of the structure’s long walls. The restrained material palette includes cedar, board-formed concrete and natural steel, which architect Juancarlos Fernandez says “will rust over time, just like the stakes at the end of each vine row.” The architecture is complemented by understated interiors by Katie Martinez Design, whose warm, light color palette was also inspired by the limestone soil. Tactile surfaces abound— from raked limestone bathroom tile and bleached walnut and white oak cabinetry to cedar siding and beams and burnished brass at the bar front. The new spaces set the stage for various experiences at the winery, from a VIP limestone cave tasting with the owner’s personal library of wines, to an afternoon of “Bocce and Bottles” on a private outdoor lounge area. bookerwines.com

FOG DESIGN+ART

After taking a pandemic-related pause in 2021, FOG Design+Art is back with a bang, continuing its ongoing exploration of the relationship between art and design. This thought-provoking event attracts top art dealers, curators and artists from around the globe. FOG 2022 will feature 45 galleries, with 10 participating for the first time including local galleries such as Cult Aimee Friberg Exhibitions, Friends Indeed and pt. 2 Gallery. This year’s event will be held at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture from January 20–23 and kicks off with a Preview Gala on January 19 benefiting the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s education and exhibitions program. A series of conversations hosted by leaders in the fields of art, design and technology will be held throughout the four-day event, and on January 22, pioneering musician Linda Ronstadt will be honored at the fair’s annual Innovators Luncheon. fogfair.com

SCENE

MEET THE MAKER DUNCAN OJA

When woodworker Duncan Oja creates a side table or a turned vessel, he takes his cues from the wood’s rugged natural beauty. The artisan is intimately involved in every step of the process, from milling the lumber himself, to breaking down the boards and then ushering the wood into its new form. Having outgrown his studio in San Francisco, Oja moved to a characterrich, 1930 brick building in Crockett. He renovated the space—once a grocery store—into a woodworking studio, all the while crafting his latest line comprising a slat-back Windsor side chair, armchair and bench in oxidized oak and brass. ojadesign.com Where do your ideas come from? I try to be open to where inspiration comes from—not sticking to a certain style too strictly. I’m definitely influenced by the American furniture tradition—Shaker-style furniture is sort of how I came into woodworking—but I like to think inspiration can come from anywhere, even a discarded chair on the street. How did your new Windsor-inspired pieces come to be? These are specifically inspired by more simple, less decorative American Windsors

068

LUXESOURCE.COM

that were being made in the 19th century, usually thought of as a decline in the style. It’s obviously a modern take, but I was trying to focus on just function and simplicity—sort of tearing down the design as much as possible while still making it feel like my own. I’ve played with brass before in other pieces. It doesn’t have quite the same warmth as wood, but I like the idea of these straight spindles. Some of your work has a rougher aesthetic. Can you talk about your process? I worked as a sawyer for a small-scale milling operation and got a lot of inspiration from that process— seeing the textures and forms that normally don’t make it to the final piece of furniture. My favorite ideas come from the actual work and the things you see along the way, more than sitting down with a pencil—or worse, the computer. Some of the more sculptural work is actually found chunks of wood that you do almost nothing to. It’s just about respecting that piece of wood, seeing what it wants to be and having the lightest touch possible.

BEHIND THE BLOOM FRANCIS & FRANCES

SCENE

DESIGN

Early in the pandemic, as weddings and other events were halted, local floral and event company Amanda Vidmar Design had to pivot. With no wedding reception tabletops to design, partners Amanda Frances Vidmar and Mikenzie Francis Salvucci began making individual flower deliveries—and they loved it. So much so that they decided to open a floral shop in the heart of Cole Valley. Like their event design business, the joyful new shop— called Francis & Frances—offers fresh, quality blooms from local growers and organic farmers. Visitors can also purchase handmade ceramics from local artists, as well as bath and body products—many from businesses owned by women and people of color. francisandfrancessf.com As you started delivering flowers, what did you enjoy most? Amanda Frances Vidmar: Being able to see everybody’s love notes. Notes of compassion, happy birthdays and I love you’s brought us a lot of joy amongst all the craziness. What are you most excited to bring to the neighborhood? AFD: We’re in Cole Valley, which is super cute. It’s really family oriented. We would love to show the community a farmto-table method of floral design. We

appreciate a lot of the organic flower movements and really want to make that important here too. We’d like to educate as well, whether through classes or wreath workshops. How would you describe your aesthetic? AFD: We’re hoping to bring a cohesive design style, as well as something a bit more vibrant. The floral community can get really neutral, and we’re interested in bringing something that’s a little bolder and more fun. We ran with a style that Mikenzie and I are calling “Groovy.” We sent our designer a playlist to listen to—it was all from the ’60s and ’70s—and she found some groovy fonts. What are your favorite winter blooms? Mikenzie Francis Salvucci: My favorite is the hellebore. It’s kind of underrated because it’s not super colorful and playful. It’s just a flower I’ve always loved. AFD: It’s actually tattooed on my arm—daphne. She blooms in late February and can grow through frost, so it’s a super-resilient plant. It’s not the most beautiful of all time, but it smells so intoxicating—somewhere between fresh rose and Froot Loops. It’s got such a short season, two weeks maybe, so it has an ephemeral quality.

HEALTHY HOME As more people yearn for a return to natural, eco-friendly products, Oakland-based Model No. has set out to meet that desire. The team turned to natural, durable materials, such as FSC-certified wood, wool, ethically sourced feathers and nontoxic organic latex, then spent months perfecting the design of a minimalist sofa. “We wanted it to feel comfortable, so it could fit in a modern home,” CEO Phillip Raub says. Model No. then used that sofa as a jumping-off point to create The Platform Series, a collection of sectional sofas, chairs, ottomans and coffee tables that contribute to creating a healthier home. The furnishings are currently produced on-demand at Model No.’s California micro-factory. “We’re still small, but the end game is that if you live in New York and you order a product, we’ll fulfill that in a micro-factory close to the tri-state area,” Raub says. “That cuts down on the lead time while reducing our carbon footprint.” Peruse their offerings at the company’s latest pop-up showroom in Berkeley’s design district at 1799 D Fourth St., open until February 4. model-no.com

THREE DESIGNERS REFLECT ON AN INDELIBLE SPARK.

Martyn Lawrence Bullard

AS TOLD TO MICHELLE BRUNNER

When I was 12 years old, I began my career selling antiques from a stall in London’s Greenwich Market. It was the 1980s then, and Art Deco was the height of fashion. It was one of the first design periods that I studied, and from that, my passion grew. Because I came from a theatrical background—originally, I wanted to be an actor—it’s only natural that I would be drawn to a style so closely associated with Hollywood glamour. With the advent of cinema, Los Angeles boomed during the 1920s and 1930s, and extraordinary spaces, like the Cicada Club in downtown L.A. and the historic Sunset Tower hotel, were built. For me, the appeal of Art Deco lies in its association with decadence. The world had just come out of World War I, and there was reason to celebrate. People wanted drama and floridity. We left behind the Edwardian and Arts-and-Crafts periods, and turned almost instantly to this brand-new era symbolized by ornate geometric forms. Of all the Art Deco styles, I’m particularly fond of Egyptian Revival. It conjures the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, and with that, an air of adventure, travel and romance. In my work and in my own home, many Orientalist and Moroccan motifs blend with the geometric vibe and monochromatic palette of Art Deco. Recently, I drew inspiration from the period to inform a collection of inlaid stone and lacquer accessories for SV Casa. We did a series of beautiful cases that open into bars, inspired by Hermès and Louis Vuitton steamer trunks from the 1930s. They recall one of the first Art Deco pieces I ever bought: a 1920s alligator case, which makes me long for the time when travel was new. In those days, people used silver- and-gold jars in sleek cases for toiletries. We used to travel in such style! I’ve kept it with me throughout my journeys. It’s a great nod to my past, both in my dealing in objects of that era and my love of Art Deco itself. Martyn Lawrence Bullard on the steps leading to the pool and gardens of his Los Angeles home. The graphic patio tile nods to Art Deco geometrics.

I was born in Seoul, South Korea, but moved to Michigan when I was three. Most of my ideas about my home country came from my parents, who were passionate about collecting and preserving Korean art. One of my favorite early memories was flying to New York City with my mother. She was shopping for a scholar screen— an artwork meant to decorate the study of a Yangban (a scholar of the highest class). They depict items a Yangban might exhibit to show his refinement: books, a peony, ink brushes. My mother was also searching for folk art—colorful, informal paintings, often with suggestive subject matter. I learned then that there were two schools of Korean art: the school based on courtly formalities, and the folk art hung in the homes of merchants or shamans. Adolescent me became fascinated with folk art. Rabbits smoking pipes! Mountains in every color under the sun! The rainbow hanbok of young girls! To me, these visions were the heartbeat of traditional Korean art—and today, they inspire every inch of my design aesthetic.

Some people think decorating is about picking pretty fabrics, but it is rooted in soils far deeper than that. As I design this home, I think of all the people who have lived here over the last two centuries, my family tree that dates back 700 years, and my children who will carry the future— and who, I hope, will tell everyone’s story. Young Huh in her Manhattan office, framed by inspiration images and wallpaper samples. The large pink swatch is a custom, in-the-works concept for her country house.

Last year, I purchased a home in New York’s Hudson Valley: a classic Colonial in the most idyllic countryside setting. As I dreamt of how to decorate, my thoughts turned to my heritage. One project I’m working on is designing a wallpaper with Fromental, inspired by the papers out of East Asia, which were traded in the New World in the 17th century. I’ll be incorporating both the structure of courtly paintings and the brightness of folk art, all presented in a modern way.

Fashioning a Narrative

TOLD

Rayman Boozer

AS TOLD TO STEPHANIE HUNT

RADAR

AS

Ever since I was a child on a farm in Indiana, fashion has been my obsession. I was the middle child of nine—the Jan Brady of our family, and sort of invisible. After seeing The Mary Tyler Moore Show, my dream became to live in a city in an apartment. At age 8, I made a pact that I would one day move to New York and do glamorous things with my life. We didn’t have a ton of money, but my mother had amazing style. She made a lot of our clothes—think: red-white-and-blue bell bottoms with matching shirts. Even at age 5, I was picky about what colors I wanted to wear, and I hated being dressed like my brothers—I wanted control! Growing up, I fell in love with magazines. I’d go down to the local newsstand and pour over Vogue and GQ. One day, a handful of subscription cards fell out, and I noticed the “bill me later” part. I asked the shopkeeper if I could have them, filled them out, and for three months, I built a library. In high school, my parents let me get subscriptions—but I held onto those issues and read them over and over.

A lot of people see fashion as trivial, but I believe that it’s a nonverbal way of communicating with like-minded people. Especially in Manhattan, you’re always presenting yourself to the public in some way. For me, fashion is armor. It’s a silent means of declaring who you are. Rayman Boozer stands at the threshold of his Manhattan closet wearing a Prada sweater and slacks (his favorite fashion house) and Tods loafers.

When I went to college, I declared a fashion design major before finding interiors. What I am is a strong fashion editor—I’m good at pairing things together in interesting ways: colors, textures, attitudes—and a mix of high-low. My velvet Gucci blazer with a Uniqlo sweater; a leather Prada trench coat with my favorite Scotch and Soda jeans. Fashion also feeds my approach to color—you see daring combinations on the runway before the home. This, in part, is what keeps my interiors optimistic and open-minded.

Provence

Happy place: About 7 years ago, I rented a 300-year-old house outside of Avignon with my family—and it was kind of an epiphany. We’d spend mornings by the pool, then drive through the Rhône and visit towns, like Roussillon, which has this incredible sandstone, terra-cotta and ochre palette. Only fitting: Provence has a similar climate to Los Angeles, and the building materials—stucco, painted wood windows and shutters, tiled roofs—are essentially the same as Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, a primary vernacular of Southern California. Dream delivered: From the minute you walk in the front gate, you’re in this other world of pea gravel, olive trees and lavender. You enter the house through a pair of French doors, and it’s all very open and transparent. To me, it’s transportive emotionally. The clients, the design team and I were all so taken with the authenticity of the Provençal lifestyle; we tried to capture it’s relaxed, casual elegance in this home. willigerarchitect.com

Rockefeller Center

RADAR

Designer Bill Musso found inspiration for his Atlanta condo in a beloved landmark’s Art Deco mystique.

main photo: getty. inset: lauren rubinstein.

Early influence: My grandmother was enamored with Radio City Music Hall. Whenever she had the opportunity, she would take me to see a live show or a movie. We’d spend time walking around Rockefeller Center, and she would point out all of the friezes and statues. Aha moment: Four years ago, I did the 30 Rock tour. I wasn’t so interested in the TV aspect, but in wandering the halls and common spaces and taking pictures! Ode to Deco: The marble floor in my entry was inspired by an elevator waiting area at 30 Rock; I worked with The Rug Company on a runner that’s literally an adaptation of the carpeting in Radio City Music Hall; and my interior doors have the same Art Deco-influenced, raised panel design. Balancing act: Inspiration is all about knowing when to peel back. Like Coco Chanel famously advised: stand in front of the mirror and remove one item. I’d never want to feel like I’m living in a time capsule (as much as I love wearing a smoking jacket). mussodesigngroup.com

A Vintage Photograph

Unexpected idea: This photo of Sonny Bono and former Mayor Frank Bogert was the first inspiration image we showed our client. We overlaid it with a pink filter to tease out the magical light that happens at sunset in Palm Springs. There’s a rugged romance—a laid-back, masculine mood to it—that sung to us. Desert journey: There’s no front yard or backyard, per se. You enter through a portal in the Ficus, then move through these different sequences that are always changing: a fire pit surrounded by muhly grass, a palo Verde grove, an olive tree dining orchard. It speaks to this notion of traveling on horseback through an ephemeral landscape. Message received: For this project, we “borrowed” palm trees from the neighbors’ yards—and the San Jacinto mountains peaking above the hedges. At sunset, with the pink grasses in full bloom, the image of the cowboys and the palms—that feeling of a total Palm Springs escape—is really what you’re getting. sdisf.com

The English Country House

Mood board: From the first time I saw the property, the story in my mind was that it was a kooky British grandmother’s house that had been passed down to the next generation. It’s a large, new construction home, but the way the rooms were laid out—the intimacy of scale and the classical millwork— suggested history. Hero piece: I’ve always been drawn to tapestries, and here, they provided a strong “old manor house” through line. We hung a large 18thcentury Flemish tapestry in the living room and wallpapered the dining room in a Scalamandré print for a European country house vibe. Homework: I pinned about a billion pictures. Upton House, a Georgian manor in Gloucestershire that we referenced, has this hall with the most perfect minty green, which inspired the shades of celadon throughout. I love historical colors; tertiary tones are so much more interesting. studiohus.com

Sophia Loren

High-octane starlet glamour inspired Samantha Todhunter’s interpretation of an Aspen ski retreat.

main photo: oliver clarke. inset: getty.

Modern muse: Our projects often begin with a sensibility imbued by a person, and in this case, Sophia Loren was one of our initial drivers for the mood and design intent; she’s the very embodiment of la dolce vita. Dramatic details: My clients wanted to transform a pastiche Colorado lodge into a home that was cool, effortless and glamorous; a space that lights up at night for entertaining, but also provides a languishing daytime salon. A core element to our work is always ‘the mix’ and for this dolce vita-driven project, the mix manifests in interesting combinations of textures and weaves. Think: mohair velvets and metallic glazed linens, marble and lacquer, and patinated brass elements. Secret sauce: It can be easy to go over the top, especially when you are going for high-impact design. The art is to know when you have done enough to tell the story. A successful room is all about artful layering drawn from travel, books, nature, art, history—and iconic people. samanthatodhunter.com

For a new home in Point Reyes Station, California, architect Dave Sturm channeled a design icon’s purist approach. Origin story: Our client grew up visiting Mexico and had loved Barragán since childhood. Field work: I was a budding architect when Barragán won the Pritzker Prize, and had been wanting to visit his home for decades. This project prompted my wife and I to spend two weeks in Mexico City. We visited several museums a day, and many Barragán buildings. I immersed myself in his spatial relationships. Good stuff: Barragán had this really limited, yet influential palette; a very high-modern aesthetic. His pink is almost like the national color. Key details: Nothing extraneous; we brought the walls all the way down to the floor—no trim, baseboards or moldings. And we used steel casement-style windows for the cleanest sight lines. Take it back: It’s a reference, not an homage. We were inspired by his simplicity. If Barragán had signed on, I imagine the walls might be pink. butlerarmsden.com

WITH HER LATEST COLLECTION, DESIGNER LORI WEITZNER DELIVERS AN ODE TO CENTRAL PARK. W R I T T E N B Y H E AT H E R C A R N E Y

Imagine wandering through Central Park. Bright pink petals highlight a grid between cobblestones. Intricate moldings and sandstone carvings come into focus on stair railings. At sunset, the city skyline turns from orange to golden to purple to gray. It’s this romantic setting that provided designer Lori Weitzner with hope and refuge during the dark days of the pandemic—while also opening her eyes to patterns, textures and colors hidden in plain sight. “It was a lesson in the idea that you’re so familiar with something that you stop looking,” says the designer. “I began to see everything in a whole new way.” The resulting collection is an ode to Central Park—an exploration of fabrics and wallcoverings that captures the beauty of a city in the midst of rebirth. “I love New York. It’s what keeps my senses alive. You pass a bakery, then you pass litter on the street. It’s all there,” says Weitzner. “Central Park is an oasis to the urban grit.” IPhone in hand, the designer would “click, click, click” on weekly rambles through her sanctuary, then return to her quiet Chelsea design studio where she printed and arranged the photos on a large white table. From there, the creative work would begin—editing, sorting, sketching and playing with colors and materials. Chariot, for example, a soft jacquard linen with subtle damask patterning, evolved from an image she snapped of traditional stonework near Bethesda Fountain. “We painted it in the studio, and then, because we didn’t want such a traditional pattern, we took a sponge

and broke it up with texture so it would feel eroded,” explains Weitzner. Illumination, an embroidered textile, stems from sketches of foliage in the Shakespeare Garden, while Mesmerize, a cut velvet print, takes its cues from the fountain’s stone filigree. With the line complete and her schedule picking up, it might be surprising to hear that the designer still carves out time to walk in the park—but it’s a habit she’s not willing to give up. “The pandemic made me slow down and appreciate the details,” reflects Weitzner. “This collection is about nature, but it’s also about seeing things anew.”

By the 1930s, Eileen Gray was a solidified furniture designer and architect—a rare accomplishment for a woman by early 20th-century standards. Of her many contributions to the modern movement, the Irish-born creative designed the ubiquitous (and replicated) adjustable side table, which she designed specifically for her home dubbed E-1027, shown above, on the French Riviera. Gray set out to build the residence— her first ever—in her late 40s, and it still stands today as a survey of modern design.

PASSION PROJECT MATTHEW QUINN

What a beautifully layered space! This kitchen is an homage to the owner, whose zeal for art, food and life shines through in the design. When she and her family moved from Mexico to the Atlanta area, they acquired a charming bungalow property and she promptly saved her pennies for 12 years to have her dream “Matthew Quinn” kitchen, as she explained, which was truly the ultimate compliment. Wow. What did she request? Thinking outside of the box was important to the client. She wanted to make the kitchen uniquely her own, which included covering the walls with art, creating plenty of storage for cookbooks and even adding cork flooring that provides comfort when standing and cooking. But it’s really about this funky mix of colors and materials that works so well together. Talk to us about the details. The Amazonia Quartzite screamed “bar area.” The boldly colored veining of the stone is paired with an equally striking blue paint on the cabinetry that creates a vibrant, fun moment. In the kitchen, white-glass countertops and high-gloss Macassar Ebony veneer cabinetry balance out the La Cornue range and brass finishes. Makassar Ebony Veneer Cabinetry, downsviewkitchens.com. Amazonite Stone, abcworldwidestone.com.

STRATEGIC APPROACH “I fell in love with kitchens because of their technicality—I like to focus on the architectural plan first; I’m a big stickler for rectangular and square rooms. From there, we address access points, center lines, location of appliances, storage, circulation, ergonomics and functionality. After nearly 30 years in the business, I can immediately pinpoint what needs to be tweaked, but if the kitchen works well, I know I can make it beautiful.” matthew-quinn.com

BATH + KITCHEN

CALMING INFLUENCE CHRISTOPHER PEACOCK What was the inspiration for this serene palette? A big, beautiful picture window decorates the kitchen, and we didn’t want the rest of the space to compete with that focal point, so there was a conscious effort to keep the colors more earthy and muted. We went with a two-tone paint effect for the cabinetry: a lovely olive or sage green on the island and then a warmer gray on the perimeter. Walk us through the rest of the design. The scheme was about making it simple and quiet while keeping it spacious. There wasn’t a strong desire to fill the walls with unnecessary cabinetry; rather our focus was on the

materials and finishes. A handmade subway tile with varying shades makes for a beautiful backsplash that provides subtle movement; we avoided anything too shiny and went with brushed and satin nickel hardware. How did you approach scale? This is a very large kitchen with a barreled ceiling. So we grounded the environment with a large island featuring cutting blocks at both ends and a custom pewter-and-nickel metal hood that anchors one wall. The island table developed into a multifunctional element with storage and seating, as well as a place to work, prepare food and entertain.

TOP TAKEAWAY “The key is to be a good listener, have an inquisitive mind and a holistic or all-encompassing approach. If you watch what happens in most people’s kitchens today, it’s not kitchen related. It’s a gathering space, an entertaining space, a quiet space. Sometimes it’s a retreat or a place to relax—it’s all these things. We have to understand how the kitchen is being used because this room has matured into the most important space in the home. It’s critical to get the design right. Trust the people you’re working with—a kitchen renovation is an everlasting project.” peacockhome.com La Jolla Scone, paulferrante.com. HERITAGE MOMENT SARAH BLANK

This kitchen is in an older home, right? It’s an absolutely stunning Spanish Renaissance residence that was built in the early 1900s along the Hudson River. Unfortunately, the kitchen was in bad shape after a recent update, but I was lucky that the client wanted to go back to its historic character. I am a big believer in taking from the past to create the future and spent a lot of time understanding the original aesthetic of this property.

How does your background inform your designs? I love classical architecture and historic structures—I’ve been a part of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art for a long time. Everything I do now, even after all this time, goes back to the aesthetic of old homes and what they teach us.

LUXESOURCE.COM

Sarah Blank Design Studio chose Farrow & Ball’s Stone Blue for the island in this Irvington, New York, kitchen by Taconic Builders. A BlueStar range, Miele oven and custom hood complete the scheme.

EXPERT TIP “Here’s a trick for anyone embarking on a new kitchen project: Do not clean up when the designer comes over to see how you live. If you tidy up before I arrive, how am I going to know what the problems are? I spend a lot of time talking to clients and asking what they want, but what tells me even more is opening all the cabinets and drawers and looking at their inventory and how everything is stored. Once I know what’s behind closed doors, I can design your kitchen! My new book, Classic Kitchens for Modern Living, is certainly a culmination of everything I have learned over the past 40 years!” sarahblankdesignstudio.com

photo: neil landino. book cover: images publishing, march 2022.

Where did you start? Before I did anything, there were several architectural changes that needed to be made, including taking down a wall, reworking a window and altering the ceiling. Then, I began the mission of taking a very narrow kitchen and making it functional. A lot of the elements, such as the metalwork and wood detailing, are inspired by 19th-century European kitchens.

HIGH-DESIGN BAR SPACES TOP CLIENTS’ WISH LISTS.

LIVING

“ A hand-painted, high-gloss cabinetry color was customized around the wallcovering in this Short Hills, New Jersey, project. We always ask and try to push our clients to do something a little more unexpected in smaller spaces. The outcome was beautiful.”

“The client had an impressive collection of vintage glassware and entertained a lot, so from the very beginning of our conversation we knew the bar would be an important component. The homeowner was drawn to the vibrant color and stone elements. The resulting happy mix is truly a reflection of her.” –MATTHEW QUINN

“ T his Stamford, Connecticut, jewel of a room is both a wet bar and wine room, as well as a butler’s pantry. The homeowner fell in love with the tiger maple wood, while the high-gloss ceiling and its reflective quality make the room feel deceptively large.” –SARAH BLANK

Bright Young Things

JEAN LIN, COLONY In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, then-design journalist Jean Lin sparked an idea: invite local New York City artists to craft works from debris for storm relief. In the process, Lin grew familiar with the growth and representation struggles faced by independent makers—and the idea for a new, community-driven gallery model was born. Where the industry-standard commission hovers around 50 percent, Colony takes a smaller fraction of each sale, and charges a stabilized monthly co-op fee. Their contract also includes a non-exclusivity clause, which “shows our true intention of putting the bottom line of the designers we rep before our own,” says Lin. Expanding its influence and capital, Colony has since launched an in-house consultancy offering marketing, art direction and interior design services. “The vision moving forward is that these branches of business scale in tandem,” says Lin. “Which goes back to Colony’s founding spirit and genuine belief that all ships rise with the tide.” goodcolony.com

THE CURATOR

THE INNOVATOR

“I don’t love the word ‘disruption,’ but I am passionate about asking the question, ‘how can we make people’s lives easier?’ And I think the answer to that lies in meeting them where they are,” shares Anderson Somerselle. For Somerselle, a veteran of the textiles industry, this passion manifested in a digital-first showroom designed to aggregate boutique lines—as well as their up-to-date stock numbers and samples—in one destination. “It’s an honest response to witnessing how many designers and clients start their inspiration process online,” he notes. With the lower overhead associated with a digital footprint, Somerselle also provides a more affordable representation avenue for smaller brands. “It made sense to bring together these amazing artisans in a virtual showroom first, because there’s more reach,” he explains. “Eventually, we’ll open a physical space, but that will be a totally different experience. I want people to say, ‘Wow! I want to live here.’ ” somerselle.com

THE RECONCEIVERS NOAM DVIR AND DANIEL RAUCHWERGER, BOND

In a past life, Noam Dvir and Daniel Rauchwerger worked as critics at the Israeli newspaper Haaretz before falling in love, heading west to earn their masters at Harvard and founding BoND, a holistic architecture and design firm focused on expanding traditional ideologies of home. “In the residential environment, there’s this mold of how a space should be organized—but design for non-nuclear families looks different,” explains Dvir, pointing to the themes of gathering and desire that often distinguish their work. “Design should explore many different identities and lifestyles, and we really wear that on our sleeves.” With a fast-expanding residential practice, the couple has their sights set on more cultural projects in the commercial space. (They recently designed Company Gallery, a leading queer art institution, and are fast at work on a trans-led after-hours nightclub.) “It’s very important to us to work on projects that people will have access to, and that feed us spiritually,” says Rauchwerger, adding, “the real fun comes in sharing.” bureaund.com

ZOE FELDMAN, ZOE FELDMAN DESIGN

“I truly don’t know a lot about sustainability—and that’s kind of the point!” demurs Zoe Feldman. For the Washington, D.C.-based designer, the birth of her daughter in 2018 collided with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s devastating special report on global warming, spurring her to evaluate her own role in the climate crisis. After researching avenues of impact—and

Designer Zoe Feldman stands amidst hero pieces from her new capsule collection of vintage and antique rugs curated for District Loom. With every purchase, 100 trees will be planted.

upon discovering that planting a tree only costs 5 cents— she designed a green pledge as a core pillar of her business. Aptly named Our Beautiful Planet, the framework includes donating her consultation fee to an environmental charity (then matching it upon contract signing), planting 100 trees for every approved design proposal (offsetting its carbon footprint), and a commitment to sourcing 80 percent vintage. Feldman hopes to turn this working template into a movement that designers can adapt to suit their practice. “These are easy things to implement,” she says. “We’re trying to show the industry that we can all take very small, simple steps and potentially, make a massive impact.” zoefeldmandesign.com

THE STORYTELLERS HOMAN RAJAI AND ELENA DENDIBERIA, STUDIO AHEAD

For Homan Rajai and Elena Dendiberia, design is both a global and local affair. What it is not is siloed around Eurocentrism. Meeting as young designers, the pair, with their respective Iranian and Russian roots, felt similarly disconnected from the world of European antiques they were living in, so they built a new framework. Questions like, What philosophies do you relate to? distinguish their client questionnaire, and Rajai and Dendiberia champion a diverse network of vendors working in traditional crafts. “There’s this assumption that—say, Persian rugs—are in the past tense. We’re educating our clients that there are living, breathing, modern-day craftspeople making these pieces,” says Rajai. At the other end of the spectrum, the firm is devoted to amplifying design at a hyper-local scale—and boasts a fast-expanding production wing of collaborations between Northern California artists. “Think of Alice Waters and what she did with farm-to-table,” says Rajai. “We’re bringing the same idea to design.” studioahead.com

THE BOTANIST JESSICA VIOLA, VIOLA GARDENS

A promise to “seek biological over technical solutions” nests at the core of Jessica Viola’s approach to the garden. Certified in ecological and permaculture design, Viola (one of a handful of licensed female landscape contractors in California) cut her teeth rehabilitating lawns into gardens in the California drought. Those regenerative principles have propelled her business since. Whether sculpting brims in the landscape to better harness rainfall, or planting for erosion control and fire resistance, Viola’s bottom line is embracing the intrinsic characteristics of each property, fostering the age-old relationships between people, flora and fauna amidst a changing climate. In this way, tackling the crisis becomes a creative exercise: “When you’re coming at things from a place of fear, you block what’s possible,” says Viola. “Instead of trying to solve all the world’s problems, I’m facilitating conditions for more awareness—and going one garden at a time.” violagardens.com

LORO ARCHITECTURE + INTERIOR DESIGN “Our clients want their homes to be an oasis of comfort and joy. We are eager to deliver that experience through outstanding architecture and design.”

W

ARCHITECTS

LAUREN GOLDMAN, FOUNDER, PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT AND DESIGNER loro.design 415.766.0287 loro_sf

orking with an expert team with a 360-degree approach to architecture and design is key to achieving outstanding results. As she prepares to celebrate her firm’s 10th year of excellence, Lauren Goldman, AIA, discusses just what makes LORO Architecture + Interior Design so groundbreaking. “Our relationships,” she says. “Trust between client and architect is instrumental for the most successful design and construction experience. Our goal is that every detail and decision is so thoroughly flushed out that there are no post-project would haves or should haves.” Another component of LORO’s stellar trajectory is the savvy team

Goldman has assembled. “My first major commission was a brand-new residential project in Palo Alto, which brought great exposure,” she shares. “As our projects grew in size and number, and the sophistication of the clientele increased, I knew that it was time to build our team. The appointments of Megan Jones, AIA, as head of architecture, and Megan Burton, as senior design associate, were a critical step in our success. And as client requests for LORO-designed interiors, furnishings and accessories increased, we made the decision two years ago to bring Nicole Johnson on board to launch our interiors arm, making our roster of services truly comprehensive.”

ASK THE EXPERT Discuss your areas of focus. We primarily work on custom residential projects, which includes everything from small, detailed renovations to full new home builds. What style are you known for? As our projects reflect our clients’ lifestyles and tastes, each one is unique. Good Spirits A modern vintner lovingly reinvents the homestead of her predecessor. W R I T T E N BY M I N DY PA N T I E L P H O T O G R A P H Y BY J O H N M E R K L

Interior Design: Christine Markatos Lowe, Christine Markatos Design Home Builder: Mark Davis, Wright Contracting, LLC Landscape Architecture: Stephen Billings, Stephen Billings Landscape Architecture

An early 19th-century mahogany bookcase with six hand-carved puppets lining the top is the centerpiece on one side of the living room. Christine Markatos Lowe designed the camelback sofa and slipper chairs, with the latter dressed in a Pierre Frey textile. A 19th-century painted wood bust from Sotheby’s rests on an antique walnut gateleg table.

A

nn Colgin isn’t shy about sharing instances of uncanny activity at the Victorian-style St. Helena cottage the vintner shares with her husband, Joe Wender. “Sometimes I’ll come home from the winery and the powder room faucet is running, or a candle will suddenly fall off a sconce during a dinner party,” she shares. When asked who (or what) could be behind the seemingly spectral activities, Ann offers up the name of Josephine Tychson, one of the first women to operate a Napa Valley winery in the 1880s. It was located on the property Ann and Joe now call home. Ann says she purchased the estate in 1996 “for the history and soil type,” and named it Tychson Hill after planting new grapevines—and today the winery is known for its elegant, handcrafted wines. However, her hopes for restoring what was left of the original residence were dashed after several contractors shook their heads no at the prospect. “We decided to build a new home, but chose to recreate and improve what Josephine constructed,” she says, noting that she worked with architect Daniel Summers and designer Thomas Allardyce to create the dwelling. “From the entry it still looks like a cottage, but we added a primary bedroom wing and two more bedrooms off the north side.” Two decades later, after a leak in the main bedroom precipitated a whole house makeover, designer Christine Markatos Lowe was tasked with updating everything along with repurposing and rearranging the antique furnishings and collectibles amassed over the years by Ann, who studied decorative arts at Sotheby’s in London before becoming a vintner. “My job was to freshen, edit and curate,” Lowe says. Noting that “everything was green and dark gold,” the designer’s immediate changes included lighter paint colors, modernized versions of traditional fixtures and swapping dark limestone in the main bathroom for lighter mosaic marbles. “There’s not a single thing that wasn’t reupholstered,” adds Lowe, pointing to the living room where the seat of a caned chair now sports a French linen textile and a vintage footstool cushion touts a woven-leather covering. In that same room, Lowe designed the sofa, upholstered in a purple velvet with a hushed tone,

and swathed a chair in a soft dove print. The pieces, and others throughout the house, take their color cues from an 18th-century stone-topped Swedish tea table turned coffee table that’s defined by shades of gray and lavender. A fire screen replete with steel medallions and bronze accents provides a contemporary complement to the 19th-century limestone fireplace surround from Burgundy. Following the established palette, existing chairs in the dining room were refreshed with practical pale purple leather (the better to mask wine spills) and a gray patterned fabric. Above, a chandelier features hand-blown green, gold and purple glass beads selected to match the drapes. Rearranging was the catchword for the kitchen, where the sink and dishwasher moved from the island to the perimeter of the room, and the island itself was reorganized to provide more functional prep space and accommodate a tea set from the Duchess of Windsor collection. General contractor Mark Davis installed new counters and a pale celadon metallic backsplash tile that runs up to the dormers. When concerns arose about fitting a new range hood in between two cabinets topped with crown molding, Davis came up with the elegant answer of a crisp, fluted appliance. “The space and aesthetics had to be factored in,” he recalls. “We presented several mock-ups until the final solution was developed and the new range hood could be constructed.” Weather permitting, dinner parties begin outside, where guests can sip wine in the vineyard. Landscape architect Stephen Billings reshaped the property to better suit the owners’ entertaining lifestyle. “There were some stone walls, but they weren’t beautiful, and there were overgrown trees that were badly placed, so we did a lot of editing,” says Billings, who introduced profusions of color in the form of coral bells, penstemon and pink coneflowers. “Now there’s a circumambulatory path the owners take to show guests the property,” he adds. “It’s this dreamy experience where you feel immersed in the garden.” For Ann everything leads back to that mischievous, but apparently friendly, spirit. “I think Josephine likes what we’ve done with the place,” she remarks good-naturedly, adding, “I’m just honored to have such an important property and be inspired by a great woman in history.”

utting and pasting paper may seem like child’s play, but in the hands of Denise Fiedler, it is elevated to an art form. “Collage has so many possibilities,” says the San Francisco artist. “I love that there is no technique to master. It’s purely creative. You can go in so many different directions.” Fiedler’s work showcases the varied paths of the medium. It can depict everything from animals fashioned from slivers of paper layered to look like fur, to brilliantly colored botanicals with sinuous vines. Some custom pieces are crafted from personal mementos, like a tree made from a couple’s favorite books and maps of their travels. Other commissions have been for household names like Pottery Barn, Benetton and the U.S. Postal Service. “I thrive on variety,” notes the artist. Trained as an interior designer, Fiedler first experimented with collage in the mid-1990s when she was working in the textile industry and the department store Marshall Field & Company commissioned her to make store displays. She started working in felt, but made the transition to paper when she opened a box of items she’d collected at flea markets— vintage books, maps, math flashcards—and thought, “What am I going to do with these?” Fiedler’s early collages consist mostly of those faded pages, giving pieces a sepia-tinted look, but now her work is filled with vibrant colors that she paints on paper before cutting. “Sometimes I’ll set aside a whole day just to mix colors,” she says. “It’s like being in a lab.” Her floral collages, a series inspired by her daily walks, illustrate her knack for color. Working from her Russian Hill studio, she cuts each piece of paper freehand using a trusty pair of Japanese scissors that she keeps in four different sizes. “Like chefs have certain knives they like to use, I can’t part with these scissors,” she says. She intuitively cuts the deep purple dahlias, scarlet geraniums, pink roses, chartreuse leaves and blue forget-me-nots, then arranges them “like a puzzle” on the page until “it feels right,” she says. It’s fitting artwork for Fiedler’s new studio and gallery, which was once a floral design shop. The Dutch door is often open, inviting the public to browse her work and that of other artists, but metaphorical portals have swung wide as well. “The space has become a part of my work,” she explains. “It fosters creativity and has become a tremendous inspiration—it’s literally opened the door for bigger things.”

In Denise Fiedler’s gallery and studio, art, tools and vintage finds fill the shelves (below and previous page, left). Seen here at a worktable, the artist says her space is a source of creativity (previous page, right). levated but down to earth” is how designer Sarahliz Lawson describes the Atherton home she recently completed for a couple and their young children. “The wife has a love for fashion, color and interior design and that really shows in this house,” she adds. The wife, a clothing designer, brought a host of ideas to the table. “She’s an artist—bright and full of ideas—so I was all ears,” continues Lawson. The duo worked together to source just the right pieces, and the result is a stylish dwelling that’s equally suited to hosting cocktail soirées or slumber parties. “We didn’t want anything precious or offlimits,” the wife notes. “We were looking for a true family home, the place where our kids would grow up.” She is from India, and her husband grew up in Dubai, but both spent a lot of time in Europe. When it came time to design this new abode, memories of traditional European residences came into play. “The wood siding, round windows and columns at the front door help create that look, but it is done in a casual way,” says residential designer Reza Norouzi. Working closely with Norouzi and general contractor Brian Kelly, Lawson and the clients were able to realize a home that will “evolve and respond to life’s changes,” says the wife. “It’s hard to make forever decisions, but this feels right for right now, and it feels good for our kids.” Flanking the entrance—a dramatic space with dark inlaid-stone floors—the living and dining rooms reveal the dwelling’s more grown-up side. The former was created as the perfect place for evening cocktails, with the latter designed to let friends and family shine. “The dining room is toned down because the client wanted people, conversation and food to be the focus,” explains Lawson. To the rear of the residence is the sunny great room—a must on the wife’s wish list. Anchoring one end of the space, the kitchen was inspired by those she had seen in Europe.

“Because of our time there, it was important for that feeling to be part of our home,” the wife says. At the family room end, a floating glass fireplace warrants a double take. “That was one of the most challenging aspects of this house,” recalls Kelly. “We had to create a structure above the glass that could hold a 1,000-pound marble slab in the air.” And because it’s a space used by the children, Lawson and the wife sought playful pieces like a coffee table that rests on spherical forms—a whimsical shape that Lawson wove throughout the abode, including in the upstairs media room’s pillows. “There’s just something fun about the round profile,” the designer says. Other elements tailored perfectly to the family’s tastes are the couple’s offices. The husband’s is library-like and painted a soft green; the wife’s features a graphic wallpaper, a light pink velvet sofa and a purple-hued rug. “They’re yin and yang,” says Lawson of the couple and their respective spaces. “He’s soft-spoken, grounded; she’s vibrant and charismatic.” The couple’s bedroom, swathed in a misty blue, was designed as a quiet oasis, but their daughter’s room features more vibrant design components. “She wanted a swing in her room and a pink bathtub,” the wife recalls. Although she was hesitant at first, she granted her daughter’s wish. “Everybody’s voice was heard, and the house feels that much more special,” she adds. Making the home equally distinctive outside is a landscape by Kay La Plain that puts the spotlight on the property’s heritage oak tree. “They’re protected—and rightly so,” the landscape designer notes. The garden was “designed to grow with the family” and includes entertaining areas, play spaces and a new pool. As with the interiors, color also plays an important role. “There are crepe myrtles, ornamental cherries and maples—and hot pinks in front of the house,” says La Plain. “There’s a connection to nature throughout this home, not just with its views but with its natural woods and organic undertones,” adds Lawson. “It’s bold and elegant—the whole house is a colorful, tactile, sensory experience.”

ometimes you just don’t want the vacation to end. That’s how the San Francisco couple who hired Kelly Hohla to design their Jackson Hole retreat felt after spending time in their new, clean-lined dwelling. “They realized that they wanted their San Francisco home to be more modern and light-filled,” says Hohla. “They missed the way their vacation house made them feel, so they decided to do something about it.” Their primary residence, which was Metropolitan Home’s Showcase House in 2009, was brimming with beautiful design details, but it lacked continuity from one space to the next. “Often, individual rooms in a showcase house shine on their own, but when you take the structure as a whole, it can feel like a bit of a mishmash,” says Hohla, who had, coincidentally, designed the home’s media room for the event while working at another firm. “Over the years, I collaborated with the clients on some of the other the spaces, editing or adding to this room or that room. But this time around, they wanted a complete, cohesive overhaul.” The clients also tapped architect Stephen Sutro and general contractor Shay Lyons to help them reconfigure and reimagine the traditional brick structure. “The house had so many different architectural treatments from its showcase house days that it lacked a consistent expression,” says Sutro. “I had to take it back to its roots—to its traditional bones—to then tell a more modern story within its walls.” While Sutro and project lead Helen Seldin created a more classic layout of the living spaces with an emphasis on symmetry, they also fashioned a series of deep passageways throughout the main floor, bridging the gap between the home’s traditional millwork and the modern aesthetic the clients desired. The passages also allowed for a more open flow, which Hohla amplified with a cohesive color palette—grays, soft neutrals and shades of blue that marry well with the warmer wood tones. This openness is enunciated most dramatically in the entryway, where Sutro and Seldin transformed the house with a new central stairwell. “We wanted to make the stair open, grand and more modern, allowing plenty of natural light to flow into other spaces,” says Sutro. Their brainchild is a three-

sided floating staircase crafted with curved glass and steel. It sets the tone for the rest of the house, allowing for more contemporary elements, like the steel-and-glass front door and coordinating steel French doors in the family room. “The stairwell was the ‘aha’ moment for the house, the element that delivered the modern note the clients really wanted,” says Hohla, adding that the increased natural light and open nature made way for bold design decisions elsewhere, including the kitchen. There, the team switched the island’s orientation, giving the illusion of more space. They fashioned a sleek look with a Boffi system that keeps every aspect of kitchen life tucked away behind closed doors. The center island consists of a slab of stone that wraps around all sides. “It’s sculptural and clean,” says Hohla, who painstakingly designed the herringbone pattern of the porcelain tile backsplash—a motif that provides just enough playfulness to keep the space from feeling austere. “I like to have at least one moment in each room that feels a bit unexpected,” says the designer. In the dining room, wrapped in a handpainted wallpaper, she chose a light fixture with mirrored glass, like eye-catching jewelry. In the living room, she covered the ceiling in a grass cloth with a modern herringbone pattern. And in the foyer, she called attention to the couple’s striking Dave Muller painting by bookending it with two vintage chairs reupholstered in burntorange velvet. “My clients have very distinct, very sophisticated tastes—and a fabulous art collection,” says Hohla. “The husband was constantly emailing me ideas, and together we decided that this house could take a little edge, like the oversize Todd Hido piece that you see the moment you walk in, or the aluminum sideboard by Paul Benson on the upstairs landing, or the massive piece of art by David Benjamin Sherry that completely reinvented the lower level of the house.” It is that edginess that gives the home a gallery-like feel, reconciling its traditional bones with its new contemporary design moments. “Kelly is wonderful at using unique patterns or one-of-a-kind pieces that make a space warm and playful,” says Sutro. “In the end, this home is a beautiful juxtaposition of classic and modern under one roof.”

Designer Kelly Hohla selected a Paul Benson console with vibrant, blue lacquered doors to make a dramatic statement on the upstairs landing of this San Francisco home. Above it hangs Gary Simmons’ Just a Matter of Time, 2009 against a Phillip Jeffries gray-and-white grass-cloth wallcovering.

“It’s dark and edgy and leaves you wondering,” Hohla says of the photograph of the back of a woman by Todd Hido in the living room. To continue that moody vibe, the designer covered the ceiling in Casamance’s Archibald wallpaper and outfitted the space with a Troscan sofa, antique Biedermeier chairs and a 1960s Philip and Kelvin LaVerne coffee table, all anchored by a Tai Ping rug. Above the mantel is artwork by Darren Almond.

Above: Large passageways on either side of the dining room open it to the rest of the main floor. “It was a structural challenge, but it was vital to the redesign,” says general contractor Shay Lyons. Impact comes from a Holland & Sherry wallpaper, a Bec Brittain light fixture, Mondo Collection dining chairs and curved benches from Coup D’Etat. The table is by Therien Studio Workshops. Opposite: In the family room, Hohla softened the lines of the steel-and-glass doors by adding organic shapes: a pair of Ochre coffee tables, two lounge chairs by Yabu Pushelberg from Avenue Road and a patterned rug by Vaheed Taheri. A lithograph by Roy Lichtenstein plays to the room’s color palette.

Right: A new wall of steel-andglass doors leads from the family room to the terrace. Hohla wanted comfortable pieces that played to the indoor furnishings, creating a seamless transition between inside and out. The gray woven sofa with black metal accents is by Kettal. The faceted white-and-gray marble coffee table and attendant pedestal table are by Gloster. Opposite: Hohla designed the playroom to be a comfortable place for the family to relax. The Minotti sectional is upholstered in a gray-and-white bouclé and offers plentiful seating. The Stickbulb light fixture delivers a modern vibe, while artwork by John DiPaolo adds color to the space.

Above: In the main bedroom’s sitting area, pale gray Venetian plaster walls by William Racké Studio reflect the light. Vintage armchairs were recovered in a black-and-white wool by Jab Anstoetz Fabrics and the sofa, by The Bright Group, wears blue velvet. The oval ottoman with antique brass legs is by Ferrell Mittman. Opposite: Steel shelves by Coup Studio are set against a wall upholstered in gray suede in the main bedroom. They display an eclectic array of objects. The custom bed is crafted with blue leather and the gray silk rug is by Mark Nelson Designs.
