Perhaps it’s the return of the plush, squishy sofa, or maybe it’s the clogs, overalls and macramé that I’ve seen in fashion these days, but it feels like we’re having a bit of a free-form ’70s moment. Slowly shedding the maskwearing, hand-sanitizing of the past year-and-a-half, we are re-emerging into sunnier, more relaxed days. It’s a time of eclecticism and optimism, with home and design at the center of it.

We’re excited to be living through this period of strong desire and enthusiasm for all things home, with much relocation and decoration taking place.

In this issue, we report on playful accessory dwellings popping up across so many backyards, the return of the Shaker influence in design and the latest of-the-earth wallpaper and textiles. “TATIANA BILBAO ESTUDIO: ARCHITECTURE FROM OUTSIDE IN” Mexico City-based architect Tatiana Bilbao is renowned for creating simple, fluid architecture that encourages people to create their own way of living. Her “outside in” approach identifies those external factors that shape a project, from civic regulations to the people who will one day inhabit her creations, allowing for designs that better reflect the needs of modern living. At “Tatiana Bilbao Estudio: Architecture from Outside In,” opening July 17 at SFMOMA, those intrigued by her work can get an inside look at her expansive process.

Tucked away from the flurry of urban life, yet still touting the perks of it, Kensington “carries within it a sense of escapism—a real, refined luxury we wanted to capture,” Gomez says. The collection’s remaining SKUs thus sprung from the West London enclave’s many storied sites. There is Cope’s Trail, a Jacobean floral partly inspired by the late Holland House; Long Water, an abstracted botanical based on scenery of Hyde Park; and Persian Tulip (shown left), pulling from the ornamented Arab Hall at Leighton House. When Zoffany design lead Peter Gomez set out to create Kensington Walk, the brand’s latest collection of textiles and wallcoverings, he didn’t need to look far. As a champion of emerging creatives, he first turned to an artist he’d worked with before, Royal College of Art alum Sam Wilde. IKE KLIGERMAN BARKLEY As a family in Healdsburg renovated an old farmhouse, bicoastal architecture firm Ike Kligerman Barkley devised a clever solution to help them enjoy an unused space between two buildings. “It was just a skinny space, and we popped a flip-up window into it and put a little counter and some stools out there,” says principal and studio director Carl Baker. “It became this really cool space that we’re calling the alley bar. ANDREW MORRALL ARCHITECT When architects Andrew Morrall and Bernard Tong collaborated on the design of their two-bedroom home in the Oakland Hills, they allocated 20 percent of its modest 1,500 square feet to an openspace design studio. The airy office, located on the three-story home’s lower level, features custommilled bookshelves to house travel photo albums and architecture reference materials. “We wanted a lot of light, so there are three main skylights positioned in the main gallery space on the second level,” Morrall says. “There are spaces that open the studio to the floors above, and that makes it seem much larger.” andrewmorrallarchitect.com

When a couple yearning for greater outdoor access came to him to create their new home in Los Altos Hills, Field imagined an indoor-outdoor space that would act as a nexus for daily activities. I was raised on a ranch in Northern California. Growing up, food was a huge part of my family and culture. At the Alisal Ranch, a resort where I designed the guest rooms in a classic California Monterey style, they are famous for their pancakes and pastries. It’s fitting because I was taught on the ranch that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and necessary to set the day up right. Food is a big part of my life, and my feeling is, ‘What good is a really great-looking house if the food on the table isn’t delicious?’

Along with food, I think you can’t talk about the state without talking about our Spanish architecture, particularly in Southern California. Our history is embedded in it, and the oldest buildings we have in the state are the missions. I am extremely influenced by the old Spanish-style homes and downtown buildings in Los Angeles.

To understand my choice of materials and colors, you would have to understand the soft light of this state. It’s very close in quality to the light in the South of France.

The artist David Hockney talked about how unique the light in California is, and how beautiful. And I believe the movie industry started here because of it. The light affected my style without me realizing it at first, but working in this incredible natural light has allowed me to have a lot of fun with color.

The common thread throughout this region is an easy-going lifestyle with a big emphasis on outdoors and bringing the outdoors in. It’s a laid-back vibe, but it’s stylish. I gravitate to relaxed, natural materials—linens over silks, for example. I love using wicker, grass cloth or seagrass—anything with an outdoor feeling to it. I have completed interiors all around the country, but even if I’m doing a traditional, formal interior in New York City, there’s still a little California in it.

I grew up in West Texas, but I’ve been living in Chicago since 1976. I started my business here in 1983, and at that time, it was unusual for a design business not to be headed up out of New York or Los Angeles.

I like it here because the people are warm and honest. When you are running a business, common sense is important—and common sense is a community element here, as in Texas. The Midwestern work ethic and what they call “Midwestern nice” are real things, and when you are staffing a business, that’s great.

Also, art is everywhere in the streets of Chicago, and it’s inspiring. We have grandscale public sculptures by Alexander Calder, Joan Miró, Jean Philippe Arthur Dubuffet and Pablo Picasso. I am struck by the richness of them and how they are so accessible. Of course, that’s not the only art here. I love the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and The Art Institute of Chicago. We have great theaters, dance, orchestras and restaurants. There are some people who would be surprised to learn that life is not slow in Chicago.

This city is also the heart of Modernism.

This is the home of the Chicago School and of Bauhaus in America. Chicago is where Mies van der Rohe settled and did a lot of important buildings. In fact, you can’t talk about Chicago design without discussing its architecture. The architecture is strong, but it is also about the clean lines and the proportions of the Modernist movement.

There’s a timeless quality about it, and it’s certainly influenced my work as I’m about clean, timeless design. Before buildings went up around it, I used to be able to see the Aon Center from my apartment. It’s the perfect Modernist building, with a clean, pure design, and I have admired it often over the years.

I was born in Palm Beach, and my family has been looking at the same sunset for many generations. This is an extraordinary area and an extraordinary town. It’s filled with beautiful beaches, glorious weather and people who like to be outdoors. After all, this place is enclosed by water, with a lagoon on one side and the ocean on the other.

In Palm Beach, we have an elegant and beautiful way of living that’s attractive to people. There’s a high standard for architecture here. The older structures are beautiful, and the new buildings are pretty and well-built. A lot of the influence in this area is Mediterranean—our buildings tend to have high ceilings, beautiful plaster walls and big windows for the view. Many interiors feature tile floors and handpainted murals. Personally, I love rattan, sisal rugs, glazed walls and tile floors.

My firm works everywhere—including Europe—but we’ve found that once people see how we live in Palm Beach, they decide they want to live the same way, so we often end up including Palm Beach elements. We make happy, beautiful places that you miss when you leave.

We aren’t known for prissy design, in fact, our design could be considered irreverent by some. In my own home, the kids used to ride skateboards inside! Here we are known for interiors where you can put your feet up and really relax and live. I think something that makes us different is that we have a great deal of openness. You can be walking down the street and find yourself peering over a hedge into a beautiful garden and at a lovely home—walks can almost be like a garden club tour. Our lifestyle is clearly on view, and you don’t get that in New York City when your home is 27 stories in the air.

The great Southern writer William Faulkner said: “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” I am the fourth generation of my family to live in Perry, Georgia. If you came to my home, you’d find my GreatAunt Irene’s big, beautiful platter hanging in the entryway. You’d see china, artwork and needlepoint from different generations of my family mixed with a traditional Schumacher fabric in a modern colorway.

It’s a very Southern thing to be purveyors of family heirlooms and objects. And if Aunt Irene could see her things mixed in with mine, she’d say: “Honey, it’s all fabulous.”

One of the signatures of a Southern home is an embrace of collections and curated objet d’art. I have long maintained that the concept of “less is more” never made it south, as most Southerners are collectors.

I personally collect odds and ends of silver pieces, including a serving spoon meant for spring peas and a fancy fork for bacon.

I think people unfamiliar with the South would be surprised at how avant-garde we are and have always been. We wear our fine clothes to football games, eat fried chicken with silver forks and drink bourbon in a julep cup. For us Southerners, it’s an unapologetic mix of the high and low, the old and new and the lost and found.

Another thing Southerners love and cherish is brown furniture. I like these pieces because they are a sturdy foundation to build upon in interior design. There’s nothing like an old bow-front table that’s built up a beautiful wax patina over the years mixed in a room with old mirrors and art from every decade. When you have all new furniture in a room, it’s not very exciting. But when you add old with the new, it’s an adventure for the eyes.

Interior designer Alison Pickart’s design for de Gournay draws on the landscape of the magnificent redwoods and includes woodland creatures, such as raccoons, foxes and red-tailed hawks.

The most fitting collaborations are effortless. Tell us about your relationship with de Gournay. As a bespoke heritage brand, de Gournay’s work has always caught my eye. I started by using the designs in smaller spaces and then worked up to larger applications. After a few projects, I became friends with owners Rachel and Hannah Cecil Gurney and the de Gournay team.

The brand is very much in line with my design ethos: “If you can imagine it, you can do it.” But it was this one project in East Bay,

which will be published in an upcoming issue of Luxe San Francisco, that helped to bring about this exciting collaboration.

You give your client a lot of credit for this collection. What was the inspiration?

I proposed the idea of using a different de Gournay pattern. However, this client is very clued-in on the local flora and fauna.

He loved the direction but wondered what we could do that would be “very California.” I looked out the windows of the second-story property surrounded by three large redwood groves and thought, “Done!

It’s redwoods and can’t be anything else.”

I often look to nature and see hundreds of different colors, shapes and textures together. The most unlikely combinations are the most spectacular.

Panoramic patterns tend to veer traditional. How did you strike a versatile

note with this scene? Nature always provides the ultimate baseline of beauty, and I believe this collection can be enjoyed from any perspective. In many ways, the different colorways can be the aesthetic catalyst. In addition to the original, there is a lavender version (Aurore), a sepia tone style (Eau Forte) and a blue one (Mare Verde). When you move into the lavender and sepia tone colorways, the inflection is more fantastical and otherworldly, and that helps skew an interior more modern versus traditional.

Where do you envision this being used?

Any location that has a high ceiling, like a dining room or foyer. We’re installing the lavender colorway in my studio’s conference room with 12.5-foot ceilings. Personally, I would love to see it in Kamala Harris’s Washington, D.C., dining room—I think that would be a fantastic nod to California.

Rumor has it that with just two fingers you can effortlessly lift an original Shaker chair. Such is the elegant, weightlessness of the design—lightness, utility and beauty intertwined into one. It is the Shakers, who, after all, ostensibly spawned the modern design movement when one of their chair prototypes was spotted by students at a Danish design school in the early 20th century.

And yet 240 years since the Shakers established roots in the U.S., their values of self-sufficiency, craft and optimism resonate more than ever in American design. “There is something incredibly comforting and hopeful about the Shakers,” says Lacy Schutz, executive director of New York’s Shaker Museum, who is overseeing the institution’s move to a new building and renovation by Selldorf Architects.

“They modeled a way of life we’re longing for today—gender equality; racial equality; respect for the environment; pride of craft.”

That ethos inspired Berkeley furniture designer Rafi Ajl of The Long Confidence, whose first memory of Shaker design started in Brooklyn with his parents’ ladder back maple dining chairs. “They are these special objects—refined and functional,” he remarks. “I’ve appreciated them more as they’ve aged with grace.” Beauty and timelessness are threaded throughout Ajl’s work, including his thin and strong tapered Spindle Bench and his cleanlined Gathering Chair. “In a throwaway culture, to have things that have provably and measurably endured is highly valuable,” reflects Ajl. Brian Persico was drawn to the Shakers’ emphasis on sustainability, citing their devotion to growing and harvesting their own materials. For his Windham Chair series, the Catskills-based designer experimented with post-and-rung construction, using local hardwoods he fells and splits along the grain, resulting in a stronger and lighter frame.

The seats are woven with hickory bark or rawhide, and the finishing touch is the joinery pins in the chair back, which he carves from white-tailed deer antlers collected on walks. “Materials of the same place have a tendency to go well together,” he says.

Most surprisingly, perhaps, is the community’s embrace of technology and progressive ideas (think: flattening the round broom)—qualities that attracted Hudson Valley designer Kim Markel. “This combination of ingenuity and resourcefulness is so admirable. It’s about finding solutions in unexpected places,” says Markel, alluding to her dreamlike Glow series, which uses a recycled resin composite that took years to perfect. “The shape is familiar but the material is almost foreign to the matter.”

As Schutz explains, a Shaker-influenced furnishing doesn’t have to feel or look like one would expect.

“People want something that has meaning and is connected to a set of values,” she says. “It’s a lot more interesting to see how the ethos is manifesting itself in ways that may not be immediately obvious.”

“The thing about light is that it’s always changing,” explains Erin Lorek of Lorekform. After studying light from the object’s point of view at North Carolina’s Penland School of Craft, Lorek developed her own glass and iron process, and has since honed her craft while operating out of Brooklyn Glass studio in Gowanus, New York. For each piece, including The Surround Pendant, shown, she ladles glass onto large iron plates that start out as clay, and then presses various textures into the mixture to refract light. A simple lost-wax casting process transforms the pattern into iron and creates imperfections, which add their own narrative to the original texture. Detroit-based product designer Nina Cho credits her education for giving her the freedom to form a unique way of creating. Having studied woodworking and furniture design at Hongik University in Seoul, South Korea, followed by a focus on 3D design at Cranbrook Academy of Art, Cho now tells her story through pieces of furniture, and is influenced by the artistic ethics of her Korean heritage. Is this a main bath? It’s a powder room but can also function as a full bath. These spaces are unique because they’re one of the only areas in a home that nearly everyone, including guests, experiences, but not for a lot of time. This allows for the opportunity to make a really dramatic, special statement without the risk of fatigue. Like this marble! Talk to us about it. The clients love stone of all types. They wanted something impactful, so the idea was for someone to walk in and feel enveloped by the marble, which is polished Guatemala Verde. It has this glowing effect. Because the stone is so bold, I wanted the other elements to fall in line, both serving a function while still looking beautiful. What about lighting? Creating equal lighting throughout is really important, especially when the powder room has a directional window. If you don’t light from above and from the sides, very harsh shadows will be cast. We added the sconces and overhead fixture, and also installed brass louvers with caning at the window to bring in a soft light and add visual interest without taking away from the stone. Why did you choose brass details? Green marble lends itself to a warmer metal, which plays well with the wood flooring. I wanted most of these brass components—the fittings and hardware—to be pretty minimal and recede. The shower without any glass sort of shrinks back and doesn’t detract from the fact that this is an exquisite powder room. Even with the striking components, there is a certain quietness in this space that is really beautiful. nainoa.com

The way we see it, the trend is a win-win for maximizing property while staying young at heart. Take inspiration from these bite-sized exemplars around the country.

Designer Bryan Graybill and Historical Concepts President Andrew Cogar looked to the primitive, monochrome homes of early Nantucket and Newport in selecting Benjamin Moore’s Narragansett Green for the façade of Graybill’s East Hampton cocktail shed. With a view to easy-breezy entertaining by the pool, the accordion window with mahogany sill functions as a self-catering bar.

For Bryan Graybill, designing a cocktail shed at his Hamptons home alongside architect Andrew Cogar proved a great opportunity to flex his background in hospitality design. “My husband and I love to entertain, but we also like to be part of the party, so we tried to create a selfdirected environment,” he explains. “We wanted a casual hosting program, and to keep guests and wet bathing suits out of the kitchen when they need a drink.

We defined that purpose first and the architecture followed.”

For the exterior expression, Cogar and Graybill drew inspiration from East Hampton village—specifically, from its one-room schoolhouse whose modest scale and circa 1784 charm felt apropos. “Reclaimed materials were key to bringing a sense of nostalgia into the present,” says Graybill.

Working with a build team of Amish craftsmen in her native Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Alison Carabasi has carved a chic niche for herself: designing exquisite custom garden houses, which are then shipped as a single, finished piece to discerning clients around the country. Below, Carabasi shares her insight on the accessory dwelling’s limelight moment.

Origin story: I’m from an artistic family and grew up appreciating pretty homes. But this all started when I made my own garden house and saw how much my whole family fell in love with it. Every time I looked out my window, it made me happy. My kids called it “The Shed” in high school, and all their friends would come over and hang out. I saw how great it was to have one—how it enhanced everything about my yard, my home, my life.

Business report: I noticed an uptick before the pandemic, and it’s only increased since then. You know how in England gardening is a big part of mainstream culture? I think that’s happening here more and more.

There’s a growing awareness for healthy eating and healthy living, and that translates to people being out in their yards and caring for their gardens. It’s a good trend.

On deck: Continuing to evolve the architectural styles we offer; one I have in mind is a pagoda. I also want to launch garden ornaments and accessories. At my home in St. Petersburg, Florida, a shed became the foundation for my garden studio. Syncing the look to my home’s Georgian exterior was important, so I opted for hipped roofs and an all-white exterior. To take advantage of the garden views, I installed two reclaimed French doors instead of windows, and built in two lime-washed benches. One serves as my work space, the other as a floral arranging and potting spot. Cases were built on top to house collections of glass and silver floral vessels, which I look forward to setting out for small garden parties.

In 1929, Frederick P. Ristine, a Philadelphia investment banker, and his wife, Elizabeth, moved into BetzFred, the aptly named Wayne, Pennsylvania, English Arts and Crafts estate that would be their country home. Fast forward nearly a century and

seeing an irreplaceable diamond in the rough, Lauren Wylonis scooped it up with a view to restoration. While the property was renamed the Heydon Estate, everything else was lovingly patched, painted and coaxed back to period glory. A home designed by architect Jon Jang some 20 years ago was recently updated by designer Ashley Canty. She drew on the exterior’s Cape Cod aesthetic for inspiration throughout the interiors. Above the front door is a lantern from Lightology.

W

hen a designer’s brief is to create a home that will easily accommodate some two dozen family members on a regular basis, ingenuity is a must.

“We had to be as creative as we could be!” says designer Ashley Canty. Her clients were moving to the Bay Area from Chicago to be close to family, but the dwelling they chose—just a few minutes away from the whole clan—also meant downsizing in square footage. Key to the renovation was making smart use of every inch of the house and creating year-round outdoor living areas that work as effortlessly as the interiors.

“These clients wanted to make a fun, warm home that acts as a hub for the family,” Canty explains. Changes began with refreshing the exterior (painting the formerly gray house “a bright, crisp white” and adding brass elements for a contemporary look) but inside there was more to be done. “It was built in 2004 and had been renovated, but things were showing their age and it was time for a full remodel,” she says. With the help of engineer Ali Adib of ATA Engineering, who handled all of the architectural drawings, and builder Mark Vahdatpour, Canty added skylights, raised ceilings and reframed passageways. She also designed a new lower-level suite for guests, adding a gym and study area for the couple’s three children. There is also a wine room and stack-back glass doors that open the rear façade to the garden.

But nowhere is Canty’s inventiveness on greater display than in the kitchen. “We flipped the original living room and kitchen so that we could make an indoor-outdoor pass through, or lunch counter, from the kitchen to the patio,” says the designer.

She also created a custom vent hood over the wiferequested La Cornue range that accommodates the ceiling’s pitch and designed a pull-out table that seats 12. “It’s all hidden in the island,” she notes proudly. “It took a lot of engineering.”

Canty also took a clever approach to furnishing the home, outfitting most rooms with custom built-ins that made bulky case pieces redundant.

And because this move west meant a big lifestyle change for the family, the owners were open to

exploring new design ideas. “Their home in Chicago was more traditional, but here they were up for something new. The wife wasn’t scared of wallpaper patterns or color—so you see hues of deep marine blues, malachite, red jasper and clay throughout,” says the designer. “Wallpaper is a brilliant way to inject personality into rooms, so we used it where we could: bolder patterns in some spaces and more textural papers where we needed a simpler backdrop.” The kitchen’s black stone counters are another example of the wife’s willingness to take risks. “Friends tried to talk her out of it, pushing for white, but she went for it and she loves it,” says Canty. “It’s dramatic and glamorous.”

And while most of the furnishings are new, Canty did incorporate a few of the clients’ Windy City pieces, including their dining room table and a pair of twin beds that were repainted for their son’s bedroom. The children, at their parents’ urging, played a big role in the design of their rooms and sent wish lists to Canty. “It was asking a lot for the kids to uproot and leave all of their friends, so the clients wanted to make sure their rooms were special,” she says. The son’s room has a climbing net that spans the entire ceiling, one daughter has an interior swing and the other has a secret room. “Making sure the kids had exciting things was a priority,” says Canty. But she and her team, which included senior designer Marina Berko and junior designer Vicky Pangilinan, also indulged the couple, creating a plush new bedroom suite and a library with velvet-upholstered pieces for a cozy fireside retreat.

Outside, Canty continued the surprises with a backyard that includes a barbecue, multiple dining and sitting areas, and an outdoor television.

There are heaters and a fire pit for warmth, and wisteria-covered pergolas for shade. A playhouse, a teepee and an extra-long bench for group photos dot the setting, but there is still plenty of lawn for soccer games. “We really maxed it out,” the designer says, recalling the evening her clients made her smile by calling to happily relate that they had fit 16 steaks on the grill.

Along with the renewed family ties, the new home has made the 2,127-mile move an easy one.

As Canty says, “This house is a happy one that emanates timeless California style.”

or more than 10 years, the walls of this Menlo Park home served as the backdrop for Domonique and Grant Matthews’ family life, witnessing both everyday moments and significant milestones.

Although the couple appreciated the dwelling, as their three children grew older, they found themselves bristling against the familiar walls. Some needed changes were practical, like an additional bathroom for the kids and extra office space. More fundamentally though, they craved a different kind of living—one filled with relaxed, natural textures and refreshing sunlight that fully embraced their native state.

The existing structure wasn’t conducive to this sensibility. A classic ranch style originally built in the 1950s, the house “had low ceilings and extended eaves, which didn’t allow quite as much light in,” notes Domonique. Several years ago, designer Caitlin Flemming had brought in elements of the casual California mood they were looking for with furnishings, art and a light renovation, but the Matthews always envisioned doing more extensive remodeling down the road.

The couple was finally able to fulfill their plan when architect Lauren Goldman, builder William Cox and landscape designer Jared Vermeil came on board. Goldman designed a new structure built on the original foundation (save for a small addition expanding the main bedroom suite), one that fully embraces the landscape and the natural light.

The reimagining of the residence “was such an interesting exercise,” says Goldman. “It’s basically the same footprint on the same property, but we completely transformed the whole layout and function of their home. It was truly a fresh start.”

Now light pours through larger windows and skylights, illuminating the new vaulted ceilings lined with white tongue-and-groove paneling.

Sliding glass doors provide a seamless transition to the new pool courtyard and small casita, which Vermeil surrounded with olive trees, South African rush and evergreen grasses. These elements “pick up the slightest breeze, so it gives some movement to the landscape,” he says.

Grant in particular will never forget the day they replaced the old fireplace with the oversize glass doors leading onto the new backyard, creating a clear sight line from the front entrance to the pool

and lush outdoor space. “It changed the feel of the house completely,” he recalls. “Seeing something we had thought about for years finally come to fruition was really special.”

To preserve the home’s new openness, the interior architecture “has a clean-lined Scandinavian element to it,” notes Goldman. “But the natural materials brought in that California casual feeling.” Lightly stained wood brings a visual warmth throughout—it’s found on the exterior’s cedar siding and inside on the floors, ceiling beams and window casements. In the kitchen, Flemming added texture with glamorous marble counters, rattan pendant lights, brassinlay tile and a dramatic black soapstone sink.

Using every spare inch, the home became something like a Swiss army knife, adjustable and useful for the family’s different needs. Large areas can be closed off with pocket doors to provide privacy when needed, while cantilevered window seats make way for small retreats. “One of our favorite features in this new house is having all these little nooks for individual moments, but then also having gathering spaces,” says Grant.

The refreshed interiors were an inspiring backdrop for styling some of the same furniture and decor Flemming previously selected for the couple.

Favoring simple lines, the elements emphasize tactile, lived-in finishes like linen upholstery, light wood with exposed grain, and wicker for outdoor seating. She then layered in the owners’ beloved vintage rugs. The overall relaxed feeling of these existing elements already suited the dwelling’s organic, nonchalant spirit, which the designer says was no accident. “I sourced pieces that would eventually work well in the home renovation the client dreamed of,” notes Flemming. “I love reimagining these pieces in the new spaces—it shows how timeless they are even years later.”

Among these dramatic changes, one crucial piece of the home still remains—a slice of their old driveway with handprints from each family member (including paw prints from their late dog, Jake). It’s a touching reminder that their new home is just a continuation of their life as a family. “I feel the new memories are almost blurring together with the old ones,” says Domonique. “Because even though we’ve only just moved back in, it feels like this is the house that it was always supposed to be.”

For an Inverness artist, his chosen medium is a repository of stories.

hether it’s a table made of walnut, a redwood wall panel or a monumental sculpture carved from a eucalyptus trunk, the pieces artist Ido Yoshimoto creates in his Inverness studio have tales to tell. “When I look at my woodshed, I feel like it’s full of stories and histories,” he muses. There are the environmental stories present in the wood itself—the rains, the winds, the fires, even the animals and insects that have left their marks over the centuries. But there are other stories too. “My best projects come from the pieces I know. I might have cut down a neighbor’s tree because it was damaged in a storm. I know the kids who used to swing in it,” says the former arborist. “A big part of the practice is either creating or learning the story, both the history and its evolution.”

Reading the cues in the wood serves as Yoshimoto’s greatest inspiration but within that is what he calls an exploration of form. The blocks he chooses—some of which he might have had for years before using them—have even more secrets to share. “There are signs and qualities in each piece that I try to read as it dries,” he says. For example, the wood might tell him what orientation a cut should take to best reveal the grain. “The wood dictates form and shape. It’s a collaborative thing, and I’m trying to do the best by it.”

And the material sometimes takes a project in an entirely new direction once he’s finished. “When you work with wet wood, it dries differently because you’ve cut it. There’s shrinking and cracking because of the way you’ve responded to the form,” says the artist, who has been particularly enamored of late by the possibilities the omnipresent yet finicky eucalyptus offers. “It’s kind of exciting. I like the cracks. It’s fun to get the wood, carve it and let it age. Then it has the final say.”

As he has grown as an artist, Yoshimoto is looking at different narratives when it comes to his work. He’s thinking about scale, looking to tackle larger work, and shifting his focus from commissions to creating more pieces for himself.

“I’m most able to get into the flow when not directed as much by someone else’s ideas,” he shares. “I’m trying to get away from sculptural furniture and be more about functional sculpture.” No matter the size or the shape, though, there will always be stories to tell.

The staircase is a feat of engineering with wood treads that seem to levitate between the wall and a ribbon-like metal railing. A rustic planter sits at the base of the stair, and artwork by Laurent Laporte decorates the landing.

T

he tawny peaks of the Sierra Nevada possess a muscular beauty that’s far from delicate. But this Martis Camp abode, designed as a getaway spot for a Southern California family, stands up to the visual strength of the jagged granite mountain range while also expressing an ethereality that allows it to exist lightly in nature. “The site is fairly steep, and the house is made up of forms that cascade down the slope—it’s tightly tied to the natural topography,” says architect Clare Walton. “But water is also at the heart of this project, and it gives the home a feeling of calmness.”

As a central element, water endows the modern dwelling with the quality of an oasis. It’s introduced at the front door with a cubist fountain and a rock-lined pool that ripples from the front to the back underneath a long, glass-sided hallway.

In the backyard, the lap pool is mere steps away from the living area and is a frequent gathering spot for the family. “They wanted this home to feel like a retreat, and celebrating the concept of water helps make that happen,” says Walton. “Wherever you are in the house, you can glimpse water.”

It’s fitting, then, that the glass passageway seems to float between the black metal-clad portions of the dwelling, which contain the living and dining areas and the main bedroom suite. According to Walton, the hall provides a transition that’s both practical and soulful. “Walking down it to the bedroom, you have a feeling of lightness,” says the architect.

“There’s the sense of going to a space that’s quiet and removed, a place where you can relax.”

The concepts sound lofty, and that was the intent. “This project took a few years to construct,” says general contractor Eben Schreiber. “The clients have a great understanding of design and architecture, and they were meticulous—and that’s a good thing. Their appreciation of quality shows in the details of this house.” Walton calls out the stairway composed of floating treads and a rail that resembles a wide, unbroken ribbon of metal as one of those defining features. “The treads and the articulation of the rail, they speak to the whole dark-light, floating-grounded contrast found throughout the house,” she notes.

Working closely with Walton on the interior architecture, designer Alexandra Loew staged a balancing act herself. The designer, who completed the couple’s primary residence in the southern part of the state, kicked off this project by asking them how they wanted to feel in this home. Their answer was distilled to a single word: harmonious. To engender that feeling here, the designer started by studying the architecture of places of peace around the world, looking at everything from temples to meditation spaces for inspiration. Her goal was to create a sense of tranquility while embracing the husband’s appreciation of minimalism and the wife’s enjoyment of cozy spaces. “They gravitate to black and white tones, so we have a lot of those,” says Loew. “But we’ve added in many textures and finishes that give the spaces a tactile quality. The linen-and-silk carpets, the weathered wood of some rustic antiques and the embossed leathers in this home give it a warm, earthy and inviting nature.”

Operating on the idea that peace is hard to achieve with the presence of visual clutter, Loew worked with Henrybuilt to create the kitchen cabinetry, the bedroom closet systems, the bathroom vanities and the mudroom and ski lockers. “There is a sense in this house of everything being in its place,” she explains.

“This is a family for whom physical decluttering leads to mental decluttering, so well-considered storage was necessary for moments of creativity and repose.” With the elements of everyday life behind a door or in a drawer and a soothing color palette in place, the designer was able to highlight what she calls the home’s finest art. “The most important artwork here is the view,” Loew notes.

“The landscape is an ever-changing, always beautiful canvas.”

This family plans to enjoy the retreat and its landscape for many years to come. “There were two things that were really important to these clients: the feeling of harmony and refinement they wanted to create here and the fact that this is a forever home they want to leave their children,” says Loew. “All of us understood this is a legacy project.” And, like all good legacies, it is meant to be as enduring and timeless as the mountains that surround it.

In beloved Wine Country, locals attend to a calling: Honor the land; revere the grape. When it comes time for a new business to make its mark there, the hope is that it too will carry out the mandate. Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley certainly has. When the surroundings are as breathtaking as those of Wine Country, exploring trails should be a part of everyone’s experience, visitors and residents alike. “We always recommend hiking from Angwin over to the Palisades and then down to Oat Hill Mine,” Denton says. “I also think the northern side of Lake Barryessa is a special spot for kayaking and hiking, and Mount Veeder is a classic bike ride that offers unbeatable views of Napa Valley.”

Juancarlos Fernandez and Jarrod Denton, partners at Signum Architecture, have this to say about their philosophy: “As architects, it is our responsibility to do all we can to promote sustainable design that is good for our clients, the community and the regional landscape.” It’s a perspective that fits beautifully into the fabric of Wine Country, a place with no shortage of engaged clients, community togetherness and stunning natural vistas to highlight. The area’s most well-known endeavor, too, plays a role. “The seasonality of the wine industry impacts everything here, our work included,” Fernandez says. “Every season has its translation in wine, from bud break to harvest to crushing to dormancy, and we establish goals and deadlines with those phases in mind.” Denton adds, “We have to be mindful of limited resources, fire risks, and respecting the beauty that drew us all here in the first place.”
