Perhaps you’ve experienced the delights of an open-air shower at a resort in the tropics. That needn’t be a rarity, says interior designer Jay Jeffers, who loves creating them for his clients. He talked to Luxe about his penchant for these special features. jayjeffers.com What do you love about an outdoor shower? You’re in nature. The air is wonderful. You might hear birds chirping or see a little frog hop by.

I’ve done them near a tree or next to the pool. We did a lovely outdoor shower outside of a master bathroom in Dallas. We surrounded the shower

with beautiful ferns and trees to create privacy because it’s in a neighborhood.

By doing that, you feel like you’re in an oasis—in a different world.

Any other design approaches you’ve used? You can also create a little shedlike structure. I think about a funny TV show I saw as a kid, Gilligan’s Island.

They had a bamboo gate and you could just see someone’s feet and head, and everything else was covered. That provides privacy, but you’re still outdoors.

What should be considered when planning? If you live in a climate where pipes could freeze, think about where the water is coming from. Also, consider animal life. If there’s a tree above you, birds might plant nests up there or you might have animals or spiders popping down. But that’s the fun of an outdoor shower—the unpredictability.

TOASTWORTHY Oak Farm Vineyards, a 70-acre estate in the heart of Lodi’s celebrated wine region, is a dream event locale.

Its historic barn is available during temperate months, and the Club Room works for small gatherings. Now Oak Farm’s owners, the Panella family, have added a 2,000-square-foot Barrel Room for events, as well as a commercial kitchen. The interior features natural wood finishes, rolling pendant lights emitting a warm glow, and an 11-foot antique wood bar. “This area feels grand, with vaulted ceilings and lots of light,” says Heather Panella, co-owner and general manager, who spearheaded the design with her mother-in-law, Dorothy Panella, co-owner and managing partner. “We envision this room to be used for all types of private parties, corporate events and small receptions,” Heather says. “We also anticipate that it will be used for our own wine club events as well as seasonal festivities.” oakfarmvineyards.com

Sixteen years after opening her eponymous women’s boutique in Presidio Heights, Betty Lin introduces mr lin—situated right next door—offering men their very own clothing lounge and luxurious everyday wear from brands like Barena, Haupt and Santoni. In early 2020, despite San Francisco locking down, Lin forged ahead with plans for her new store, working with local interior designer Eche Martinez to transform the 1,000-square-foot space into a warm, immersive, masculine shop that honors the neighborhood. “Eche came up with the concept of bringing in flora and fauna from the Presidio, and I loved that,” Lin says. Local muralist Caroline Lizarraga, a close friend, had her team hand-paint eucalyptus and cypress trees, and indigenous birds like blue heron, egret, and an elegant white crane. Ebonized oak cabinets create pockets of light that showcase the store’s wares. Martinez reimagined the space as a private officers’ club, with a generous seating area where guests can sip a cocktail from the elegant bar, a welcome idea as the city re-emerges from lockdown. “The idea is to be a neighborhood hangout,” says Lin the concept. “We want people to come in, gather and talk.” mrlin.com

What direction did your work take during quarantine? I grew a lot and explored solid forms—not just woven forms—and new materials. I expanded into glass, collaborating with a glassblower. At first, I wanted the ceramics and glass to work together, but once I let go of wanting to hold onto the ceramic part, it was this whole new opportunity. I broke the ceramics to make the glass pieces. I used a technique where the glassblower blew glass into woven forms; the woven forms broke but left impressions behind. I discovered the invisible form inside the pieces—taking the negative space and turning it into a positive form.

They’re experimental, cage-like forms. I’ve always liked weaving clay with the idea of leaving space for things to breathe, such as plants and flowers. I reached out to floral designer Amanda Luu from Studio Mondine for her perspective—I appreciate her sensitivity and thoughtfulness in how she approaches arrangements.

SW: At first, we were both skeptical about working together. Ben had a new architecture career, but in my interior design practice, I had a desperate need I knew he could fill. For some time he toggled between two jobs. After a while, we asked ourselves: “Are we really going to do this—be married and work together?” We are so aligned in terms of vision, narrative and goals for the client, that in the end it was effortless.

BW: We respond to our clients’ needs and desires, but we are known for a soft minimalism—or, in some ways, a feminine brutalism. SW: I’d be the “feminine” in that phrase. There’s a tension that we think makes projects so exciting—it’s when opposing forces meet. Generally, Ben is more of a minimalist and prefers less adornment. Though I appreciate that, as a designer I like to get in and mess things up a bit. In the end, we value and find meaning in each other’s perspective, and it balances things out.

BW: At work, we don’t have disagreements; it’s more like a merging of ideas. We might have two competing thoughts, but by hashing it out, they eventually merge into one. It’s more of a push and pull than a conflict, and it leads to the best ideas for sure. The end product is so much richer, and more filled with surprise and unexpected elements. SW: We both like to be strategic about lighting, and we always agree on unconventionally shaped rugs, streaky dramatic shadows, sculptural wall art and travertine. BW: She usually wants to put a banquette in every room, and because it’s an architectural intervention in interior design, I agree.

HF: We met in a park in Washington, D.C. She had a Dalmatian, and I love dogs, so I said hello. In truth, I was smitten. A year later, she walked into the architecture office where I was working as a new employee. I was dumbfounded and remembered her after all that time MF: I really didn’t remember him! But we became fast friends. We had a lot in common from the get-go, especially both being architects, and we ended up dating, then marrying and then moving to Los Angeles.

HF: We both have a fascination with Los Angeles architecture and its spirit of experimentation and indoor-outdoor living. MF: I was born on the island of Mallorca, and the Spanish approach to architecture resonates here—it’s a natural, Mediterranean feeling.

HF: We seek simplicity. We hew to stylistically simple solutions that have informal derivations and a quiet aesthetic signature. MF: We begin a project by looking at a client’s rituals. We are more interested in what they do every day, and what they appreciate about their daily moments.

HF: Our process is collaborative. We come up with an idea together and pursue it. Married friends ask us how we do it without arguing, and I tell them that when we’re working we never disagree.

MF: We have skills that complement each other. Hunter is good at committing to a concept or idea, and never steering away from it. I am good at spatial interactions and interventions.

HF: At home, Mariapaz doesn’t want anything in the house that is not beautiful.

So, the simplest elements can become a project. We had a plastic Brita pitcher, and we wanted something more attractive, so it became a search for the most beautiful glass pitcher in the world. MF: It is hard not to work 24/7. We try to have non-work time, but work does permeate everything we do. To us, it is all one life.

HH: We are both from the same town, Woodbury, Connecticut. We met at my parents’ house—my family was building a rock wall, and Rafe heard about it and showed up one day. We knew of each other’s families, but we went to different high schools, and we never met before that day. We both moved to New York City a year later and started dating, and we’ve now been married for 25 years.

HH: When it comes to style, I’d say he’s more adventurous, and bolder with colors.

I’m bold when putting things together; like hanging a Renaissance painting next to a modern Abstract Expressionist painting. RC: I’d say we are on the same page. After 25 years, we can walk into an antique shop, and she will be able to pick out exactly the things I like.

RC: In college, I majored in sculpture and architecture. But my whole family was in construction, so I grew up in construction— I came to design work as a tradesperson. In New York, I started working on renovations of galleries and loft apartments. HH: I was working in publicity for art museums. But Rafe and I were buying homes, fixing them up and selling them on the side—that’s how we first started working together. It was my hobby before it became my full-time job.

RC: In 2003, we got our first opportunity to work together on a project for someone else.

It was what we called the “New Farmhouse” in Sharon, Connecticut. Heide joined me officially halfway through that project as an interior designer. A lot of firms offer just architecture or just interior design—and working with another firm can be a careful dance, making sure you don’t step on any toes and that you are speaking the same language. We have the advantage of speaking the same language.

Energizing her outlook of late, Schicketanz has partnered with several like-minded prefab home companies on executing her designs. As opposed to trucking in materials and labor, the approach cuts time, energy and a staggering amount of construction waste.

“Producing highly customized homes offsite,” she says, “is really the future.”

A home in Tennessee by Bobby McAlpine and Greg Tankersley boasts a connecting barn that doubles as a play area for grandchildren and an easily convertible party space.

In a sea of change, authenticity’s stronghold sets a reassuring undertone.

Extended time at home “has taught us what serves us as a friend,” says McAlpine.

“Decades ago, we were building houses that we learned to want whereas now, people are asking what the truth is about their life.” Adds Tankersley, “Clients are designing forever homes. I don’t think you can build more green than that.”

A strange thing happened this past year: Nobody visited. Stripped of show and distilled to domesticity, slowly, home began to look a bit different. If you ask architecture partners Bobby McAlpine and Greg Tankersley, it began to look like a country house.

“I’ve found that people transfer more of their hearts to their second residence,” explains McAlpine. “A primary home asks, ‘How do I present myself to the world?’ Whereas the second home is all-eyes-off. It’s the truth.” Arguing the shift, the architects cite growing requests for insular amenities like spirited-away offices, accessory dwellings devoted to health and hobby, and outdoor rooms. In the same thread, they’ve observed a return to country home traditions of yesteryear in a departure from open-concept floor plans to “destination kitchens” and defined dining rooms, and in a fresh emphasis on workhorses like mud rooms and cloak rooms. For Tankersley, “beautiful, casual spaces that speak of humility” crystallize the mood switch. “I don’t think anybody finds ego attractive anymore,” he adds.

With e-design now de facto, it’s an interesting time for realizing these shifting ideals of luxury. Architect Peter Pennoyer offers a robust menu of in-house services, from virtual renderings that allow, say, finish sampling under different lighting exposures, to 3D-printed resin models that are accurate down to exterior brick count. The final tier?

Virtual reality, a custom, hyper-realistic model in the cloud that clients access via headset, allowing them to “visit” and further specify their home before ground breaks. The technology has proved valuable on the back end, too. “During Covid, we’ve had meetings between our Manhattan office and our engineers in Connecticut where we’re all ‘together’ in a house in Florida, slapping Post-it notes on a virtual wall,” he laughs. “I think it challenges us to do things that are even more special for each project.”

Technology is also fighting climate change. In California, architect Mary Ann Schicketanz has been championing sustainability for decades. Net-zero principles are as integral to her practice as permits, yet looking forward, she says, will require a more radical stance. “We build the same way we did 5,000 years

Manhattan architecture-engineering firm edg’s custom interior wall panels and coverings—the first to be designed entirely by Artificial Intelligence—utilize a client’s design preferences and complex technology to offer endless options of visually compelling surfaces.

“I don’t think this is a flash in the pan,” says Josephson. “The more people see that this is achievable, the more people are going to want it and pursue it.”

Creating surfaces with an interesting and compelling presence is exactly what Manhattan architecture-engineering firm edg is doing with its new customizable interior wall applications. While leveraged through 3D printing and AI technology, the firm offers “organic forms” consumers wouldn’t traditionally find in a contemporary box-like apartment building.

“Living in a very ornamental city,” says the firm’s founder, John J. Meyer, “there is a natural desire to be creative when construction is extremely limited to brick and concrete.” Using hundreds of thousands of permutations from one algorithm to create these patterns, the options are limitless when it comes to creating wavelike, fluted or densely repeating patterns.

This reinvigorated biomimicry reminds us that as humans we crave a connection to nature, and as interest in sustainability grows, the future will always be organic.

“No one can deny in these designs that there’s dynamism and movement,” says Josephson. “The things we celebrate most, even in classical art, are decidedly organic.”

It’s no coincidence that fluted, linear designs are making a major comeback. Often visible on surfaces and architectural details—think interior walls, exterior siding, stairwells and furnishings with wood grains—architects and designers say the undulating design is a nod to nature, offering a soothing, pleasing effect that’s right for the times.

“Many believe the art you hang on the wall is what gives a home character,” says architect Kevin Alter of Alterstudio Architects. “However, I believe architecture allows walls to have their own charisma and not just as a kind of neutral surface, but actually something that has presence. I think that is powerful.” The oscillating details create a sense of coziness—akin to hygge— and standout visual appeal, especially when applied to wood materials, Alter explains.

Similarly, Jonathan Friedman of Torontobased architecture studio Partisans says these striking applications allude to the modernism movement. “It’s a mashup—a lot of different eras are resurfacing right now,” he says. “By looking back and resynthesizing them, we can actually reinvigorate the architecture of today.”

The firm’s Fold House project in southern Ontario, which showcases an undulating pool house structure enveloped into the side of a hill, puts the modern organic concept front and center. Cofounder Alex Josephson says that as these sculptural forms become more accessible, they grow more popular in the residential world.

I

t’s a steady cacophony of drills and hammers, a home torn down to the frame, exposed subfloors and electrical wiring, and sawdust catching the sunlight in a normally quiet residential neighborhood on a sunny San Jose morning.

For most people, this environment would be an eyesore and a major cause of stress. But for Moses Hershko, it’s a cause célèbre and any given Monday. “We’ve completely reimagined the floor plan for this client,” said Hershko excitedly. “By raising the ceilings and repositioning the kitchen, their home will have great flow and a real wow-factor.”

Hershko, a sought-after South Bay and Silicon Valley home builder and remodeler, presents an unorthodox but commonsense approach to creating luxurious custom residences.

Disappointed by the lack of transparency, accountability, and synergy in the design-build and remodeling industries, Hershko started his company, HomeTech Construction & Design, in 2004 to offer homeowners a turnkey building experience that’s highly personalized, efficient, and streamlined.

In a typical custom build project, design, engineering, and construction management are de-centralized and separate phases, which often results in clients with unmet needs, long cycle times, and project overruns. In this traditional business model, the client is still expected to do much of the heavy lifting in day-to-day coordination. It can be time-consuming and stressful, especially for discerning clients who don’t have the bandwidth or desire to micro-manage their new build or whole-house renovation.

He saw that, in order to provide the level of service his clients deserved, his entire process requires a single point of contact and accountability among all parties. Hershko expertly assumes that role, providing a design-build service that is completely end-to-end, from initial concept to final delivery.

“I simplify the entire building process for each of my clients,” said Hershko.

Designer Jennifer Bunsa aims for each project to be distinct. “I like for the personality of my clients to shine through—it should really be all about them,” she explains. When the time came to renovate a residence in Connecticut for homeowners in the food and wine industry, devoting a separate area in the house to a beautiful bar was agreed upon from the outset. jenniferbunsa.com Where is the bar located in the house?

The renovated room you see here is actually a connector between two historic structures that date back to 1790. It’s really the first thing you see when you walk in the front door. I wanted the shiplap to echo the exterior of the old farmhouse while the reclaimed beams nod to original wooden posts unearthed during building.

How is this spot used? Because of the homeowners’ line of work, we wanted to craft a special space for pouring beautiful wine and stirring cocktails—this is important to them. The wife also makes coffee here each morning, sits down and has a moment to herself after the children go to school. I like to think this nook provides a calming influence at any time of the day.

Talk to us about the materials. The idea was to create contrast within the room but to keep it elevated with warmer tones and textures like the charred pine cabinetry, striking marble surfaces and unlacquered brass hardware, which is used throughout the home. I worked closely with Amuneal on the design and they completely understood the vision!

In Weston, Connecticut, Jennifer Bunsa incorporated a Vola faucet, Miele coffee maker and Sub-Zero wine refrigerator into the bar space she designed with Amuneal, which features charred pine cabinetry and brass detailing. Benjamin Moore’s Simply White decorates the walls; the leather chairs are by Bassam Fellows.

It’s common to see these areas against a wall but Jennifer Bunsa took a look at every angle in her project and created a beautiful combination with mounted, see-through shelving that incorporates the rest of the home.

Consider the finishes. Texture is very important and can actually create depth and warmth within a space. Shou sugi ban was used here, and we actually take the wood and char it, creating a very tactile effect.

Color is personal and visceral, the perfect hue as cosseting as a cashmere wrap. Just ask designer Danielle Balanis, who swathed the walls of her office in an uplifting sage green and the ceilings in a sunny paisley wallpaper. Formerly the shadowy basement of her Mountain Brook, Alabama residence, Balanis made it her mission to imbue the newly crafted work-from-home space with optimism and inspiration, relying on garden-fresh tones and her collections of cherished artworks and antiques. “The colors are healing,” she says. “It’s my cocoon of creativity. I come down here, get lost and find my groove.”

Raised between Istanbul and Washington, D.C., interior designer Sara Bengur has a unique perspective on color associations. Luxe caught up with Bengur in the vibrant family room of a Manhattan client to hear her hot take on hue. sarabengur.com Where does a palette begin? I start by going to my clients’ homes with a giant bag full of fabrics, paint samples and carpets. I tell them to choose textures and colors they like— no stress, no ‘where would it go?’—just pure instinct. The pile they create becomes my starting point.

Tell us about this room. The inspiration was the Proportio Exhibit at Palazzo Fortuny at the Venice Biennale, which my clients had seen and loved. In Venice, you notice lots of layers and rich colors. The room faces east onto a courtyard, so I felt using warmer tones of red and orange would ground the space.

Advice for the color-shy? There’s a big difference between vegetable and commercial dyes. One thing I’ve found is that if you stick with natural vegetable dyes, and combine similar tones, you don’t get that unnecessary stimulation.

What shades bring you comfort? Growing up in Turkey and vacationing in the Mediterranean, it was layers of ochre, terra-cotta and turquoise—whereas blue and green are the calming colors of the west. I find it fascinating that different cultures have different views on what nurtures.

Where are you drawing inspiration lately? Anywhere!

It could be an artwork or a great dress. The other night, I was watching the movie Luxor, and spied this Egyptian ferry painted in the most beautiful patterns of blue, red and peach. I had to pause and snap a picture.

I’ll probably end up incorporating it somewhere.

PERFECT COCKTAIL “People think of our work as colorful, but if you actually look it’s quite neutral and restrained in a way,” insists designer Beata Heuman. Take for instance this London snug, where orange tigers prance across the walls and a theatrically canopied azure sofa stares down a moss green rug. Somehow, the tone is serene.

“Generally, I do neutral backdrops with flashes of color where you wouldn’t expect it,” explains Heuman, whose whimsical portfolio shines in her new book, Every Room Should Sing. “In this room, the traditional order would have been plain walls and pattern on the furniture, so we tried to invert that.”

Another trick: Using the same white paint across a home’s ceilings and woodwork, a move she deems “really important to tying things together.”

Heuman credits her philosophy to a deep-seated passion for art, citing Vermeer’s color mastery in particular as aspiration. “Think of his paintings.

They’re all dark and neutral, and then you’ll spot these flashes—a white collar, a red lip.” Similarly, “every room needs a pop of color,” she says. “Here, it’s the red beak of the bird on the pillow, and I have to say, that pillar box red is great. My dad worked in finance, but he was very artistic. When I was a child, we’d spend weekends at the tiki bar in my grandparents’ basement painting and drawing. In college, I studied art history (as well as business), and I’ve always admired landscapes in particular.

There’s this pensive, thoughtful quality to oil paintings that I love staring at—something about those rich, botanical greens.

Which brings us to Covid. I had become a bit of a workaholic, rolling out of bed, crawling into sweatpants, going to the computer, and before I knew it, the day was done. I was looking for a hobby, and I thought, ‘Why not try oil painting?’

I did a ton of research, ordered my materials, and set out for the park near my apartment.

I have to tell you, it was … truly embarrassing.

There I was setting up the easel with an instruction manual, dabbing at my painter’s palette. At first there was this fear of judgment, but pushing through that fear to the other side was really wonderful.

As the weather grew cold, I came inside and realized I needed a dedicated space for my hobby. Rekindling my love of botanical green, I began refreshing my apartment, starting in

the living room where I got rid of my enormous dining table (since I haven’t been entertaining at scale), adding a tea table for meals and artwork in its place. Then, I began pulling in threads of green scattered through my home.

My favorite decorative screen—a gift from deGournay—used to sit in the foyer where I never saw it. Now, it anchors the space.

Similarly, I had a beautiful Tai Ping carpet in my bedroom, where it’s wonderful, sweeping pattern of green and blue was hidden under a mattress. Now, I enjoy it every day. I added plants and reconceived my art collection.

You know those moments when you just feel chic at home? The other night, I was FaceTiming with a friend, drinking from a green Baccarat glass, and I thought, ‘I feel chic!’ And I think it’s because I’m living in color. Green is amazing: It’s that perfect lagoon water, that perfect emerald jewel, that perfect eye color.

Life imitates art for clients of Pella Doors & Windows of Northern California—at times, quite literally. A special project for the company entailed capturing the way a painting made the client feel. The team at Pella rose to the occasion. Dave Adamis, president and branch principal of the company, recalls the unique South Bay project, a joint effort

“Pella has the only wood window I will use,” says Alan Zweig of Architectural Fenestration & Restoration, a 20-year customer of Pella’s.

AFR is a window installation and waterproofing company that specializes in San Francisco architecture and restoration. According to Zweig, Pella products embody the best look for San Francisco architecture, with historically accurate details that no other company provides.

There are specific sash profiles, lugs and window attributes that have to be maintained, but, as Zweig puts it, “Pella comes through on those characteristics for its customers.” He adds, “All Pella is as a company and what it offers supports my one mission: to wow my clients.”

Designer Lizette Bruckstein played the angular Della Robbia sofa off the traditional architectural elements in the living room of this San Francisco home. She had long been eager to use this Alexander McQueen rug for The Rug Company, and found the perfect opportunity here. Above is a Lee Broom pendant fixture.

n both life and design, rarely is the line from point A to point B perfectly straight.

Inevitably, there are twists and turns and zigs and zags. Such was the case for designer Lizette Bruckstein, whose clients initially tapped her to create the interiors of their Napa vacation home. After moving through the design phase, the couple hit pause, but they called again 18 months later. “They said, ‘We bought a new home and we’d love for you work on it,’ ” Bruckstein recalls. “They’d had a daughter in the meantime, and everything had changed. This was a new chapter of their lives.”

Unlike the Wine Country project, which was to be constructed from scratch, their place in San Francisco was built in 1883 and had been recently renovated. While the update had retained many of the residence’s Victorian details—like the carved newel post at the foot of the entry stairs, ornate wainscoting, original moldings and plaster ceiling rosettes—it also provided a modern kitchen and a new family room with easy access to a terrace.

“We loved the period details alongside the modern elements. The juxtaposition—the best of both worlds—was what attracted us to the house,” says the wife. “We wanted to elevate what the previous remodel had started.”

Bruckstein made moves to ensure the house was both approachable and sophisticated. Executing her clients’ idea, the designer reimagined the entry’s banister, adding glass and painting it bright white, then creating a discreet, custom cabinet for stowing shoes. Turning her attention to the classic double parlor, she put a contemporary stamp on things by swapping out the existing mantel, “which didn’t command a presence or set a tone,” with one composed of vertical channels of rough-cut marble bookended by thin sheets of steel. “Your eyes are now drawn to the tall ceilings and that moment of grandeur,” she observes. On one side of the fireplace is another bold moment: a suspended brass bar cabinet. “I had wanted to do one for a while, and here it serves a double function since it also keeps things out of kids’ reach,” says the designer. Its airy profile and materiality also make for a compelling contrast with the heavier feel of

the steel shelving for wood storage and the texture of the logs themselves.

In this case, Bruckstein decided against renderings to illustrate her ideas, preferring to reveal all once the project was complete. “That was the biggest challenge—proving that all these things could coexist with the vintage details,” she reports, “But the clients put a lot of trust in me.” Illustrating that point are the sculptural contemporary light fixtures that now hang from the preserved plaster ceiling rosettes. “We loved the use of modern fixtures, which we worked painstakingly to get perfectly flush with the original ceiling moldings,” says the wife. “It took a few tries on some of them, given the older architecture.” Another “trust me” moment revolved around the parlor’s ethereal draperies. “They are so subtle but add softness to the room,” explains the designer. While the wife wasn’t convinced at first, she soon became a convert. “Their use with the high ceilings and moldings is just so elegant,” she says. “I love looking at them every day.”

For the homeowners, assembling an art collection proved to be another revelation. New to the process, “My husband and I caught the ‘art bug,’ ” says the wife, and they worked closely with Bruckstein and art consultant Stephanie Breitbard. Among the notable pieces acquired is a looping wall sculpture in the entry by Jeremy Holmes. “We liked the idea of texture there against the glass railings,” says Bruckstein. Adds the wife, “When I saw his work, I knew it would be perfect. We iterated on various movements in the wood, sizes and colors.” With its graceful, twisting presence in place, the space becomes less of a pass-through and more of a moment.

Amazingly, Bruckstein delivered the project with the clients in residence during most of the process, but the results are seamless and in keeping with her personal ethos. “The bones of the home and level of contrast are something near and dear to me,” she shares. The house also represents something of a full circle moment.

The dining room’s table and chairs, originally designed for the clients’ Napa place, found a home here proving that, despite life’s unpredictable directions, some things are just meant to be.

“The wife has the most incredible sense of style,” says designer Katie McCaffrey of the owner of this Pacific Heights home McCaffrey designed with architect Stephen Sutro. To that end, McCaffrey instilled a bit of glam upon arrival with a marble console by Kelly Wearstler and neoclassical gilt-and-blue-glass mirror from 1stdibs.

T

here are some people in this world who exude joy. They have an innate happiness that fills a room and lifts up everyone around them. Those are the kind of people who inhabit this classic 1923 Edwardian house in Pacific Heights, where the challenge was to transform what was a rather somber dwelling into a bold, exuberant home reflecting the owners’ personalities. “They are two of the most kindhearted, thoughtful, sweet, funny people I’ve ever come across,” says designer Katie McCaffrey.

Not to mention the fact that, as she points out, they have great style—and with that style they brought a vision for the old home. Along with McCaffrey, they used the services of designer Martha Angus (now retired), architects Stephen Sutro and Georgianna Kleman, and general contractor Seth Brookshire to make that vision a reality. “I wanted it to be colorful, eclectic and child-friendly—because it’s incredible what those little humans can do,” laughs the wife and mother of four. Incorporating modern touches was important, but so was respecting the traditional architecture, which is why they were drawn to Sutro. “He knows the city quite well,” she notes of his understanding of the local vernacular and his expertise in historic homes.

“The architecture of the old homes is charming, but I like modern too.”

“She asked for it to be lively for functions,” says Sutro, “and she didn’t want to compartmentalize things.” So, the architects’ designs drew upon what Sutro calls “the family patterns of life these days,” while still maintaining traditional touches such as formal openings between some of the rooms and keeping the kitchen closed off from the dining room. To make it livable for the young family, they worked within the existing vertical nature of the home, creating a new glass staircase connecting every level and adding a penthouse and rooftop terrace. The dark ground floor (previously used for storage and laundry) became a finished family space with a connection to the garden, and the new garage incorporates a car elevator—“the crown jewel for my husband,” the wife jokes.

In turn, the wife adores what she calls her “cocktail room,” a seductive jewel-toned living room with dark blue lacquered walls and gold accents throughout. “My vision was a New York City hotel cocktail bar,” she says. Don’t be deceived by the chic decor, however —thanks to durable

furniture (and that moody color palette) McCaffrey ensured that the children could tumble around in this room as freely as any other area of the house. “It’s very adult,” observes the designer, “but nothing in there is so delicate that a kiddo can’t come in and have some fun too.”

That fun doesn’t end there. The adjoining dining room—with its whimsical woodlandscene walls handpainted by Katherine Jacobus, a massive sculptural table and magenta Louis XVI reproduction chairs—was designed to host future gatherings both large and small. A secret bar closet with walls covered in Andy Warhol’s Flowers pattern (just one of several hidden cabinets incorporated into the room) keeps the mood celebratory. “Sutro did a wonderful job of working those cabinets in with the moldings and the corners of the room,” McCaffrey says.

Of course, as is the case for so many families, the real heart of the home is the open-plan kitchen and family room. The former, much like the homeowners themselves, is an unexpected combination of elegance and lightheartedness.

Crystal chandeliers and marble throughout make for a sophisticated setting, but pops of orange and yellow against the otherwise all-white space keep the vibe relaxed.

While, McCaffrey says, “Mom and Dad putter about in the kitchen,” they can keep watch into the family room as their kids do what kids do—dance on the sofa, climb on the ottomans and build forts.

“A lot of life happens in that area,” the designer notes, so she and the wife decided to work with the existing furniture while the children are still young. But a metallic-pink slipcovered ottoman, custom rug and two Kimberly Genevieve prints, Glitter Sandwich and Glitter Popsicle, ensure that the room is what McCaffrey describes as “chic, playful and exuberant.” The same could be said for the light-filled multi-use living space that Sutro created in the basement. A playroomcum-guest space (completed with a Murphy bed and kitchenette) the room works as well hosting the wife’s European parents as it does the kids’ slumber parties.

The family’s home is, as Sutro says, “an architectural expression of their values—of how social and boisterous they are.” Achieving this was not a quick feat—the entire project took four years. But, the wife says, “We wanted to do it right.” In the end, that’s exactly what they did, and now everyone is happy, even the house.

In an ode to the family’s love of both modern and traditional style, McCaffrey paired a resin dining table fabricated by Stuermer Studios with Louis XVI chairs from Chicago’s Old Plank Road reupholstered in a magenta Robert Allen velvet. The Boa chandelier is by Fuse Lighting.

“I wanted to bring color into the kitchen,” says the wife. Splashes of orange and yellow through West Elm rugs and curtains crafted with AND Textiles do just that. Even the knobs of the Blue Star appliances can be changed out to reflect the mood. “We’ve done yellow, fuchsia, blue,” she says. “There are so many options.”

MAKER OF MEMORIES In her abstract works, artist Jessica Martin delves deep into the nature of recollection.

T

he smell of cut grass. The crunch of freshly fallen snow. The color of your mother’s favorite dress.

In the tangled recollections of our lives, certain memories stand out as indelible personal monuments. But what we recall—and what we forget—is no accident, says artist Jessica Martin. “What we remember isn’t how we originally experienced it,” she claims.

“The act of remembering is a creative process.”

Inspired by the mechanics of memory, Martin reimagines powerful moments in her work.

Examining images from the past, “I find the abstract shapes and I create compositions based on them,” says the Healdsburg artist.

The foundation of this practice is deeply personal and based on observations and pivotal events, such as the death of her brother, a mountaineer who died during an expedition.

Processing this loss, Martin combed through his personal items and was moved by how much he lingered in the mementos left behind.

“I was experiencing his pilgrimages through his journals, his writings and the photographs that he took,” she recalls. This inspired her painting series “Memory Circles,” where she interviewed others about their own pilgrimages. Collecting photos of these locations, she extracted the most evocative features to create expressionistic pools of color and pattern.

Her work still begins with curating snapshots.

Over the years, these visual references have coalesced into “a vocabulary of shapes,” says Martin. For her sculptures, she uses wood and plaster to build this visual heft, while Flashe matte vinyl paint adds density to her paintings.

Recently, the artist broadened her gaze for her new series, “Histories/Futures,” which explores how the environment stores memory. Thick swaths of color resemble sedimentary layers of organic life and death, while delicate coils of paint and ink reference wood grain. Among the chaos of human memory, this ecological record of time suggests another perspective for Martin. “We are going about creating our world, with our wars and mayhem, but also our love and creativity. All the while these trees are just adding another ring.”

From May 22 to June 19, these pieces will be displayed at Legion Projects gallery in Healdsburg, and Martin hopes they will serve as portals into memory. “Art is a collective experience,” says Martin. “And my work is an invitation for people to add their own story.”

“Every key room is connected to the outside,” says designer Stacy Stone of this new home in Ross that she recently helped complete. The De La Espada armchairs are from The Future Perfect, where she also found the Kalmar Werkstätten floor lamp. The tables are her own designs. his house is like an Armani jacket paired with blue jeans— formal, yet informal,” says architect Barbara Chambers.

“The pieces are beautiful, but also accessible.” Which is precisely what the homeowners, a young family trading life in San Francisco for sunnier Ross, sought from this new home. “We wanted an elegant feel, but it was important to have a house that was practical for children,” says the husband, recalling how much he and his wife enjoyed creating the dwelling for their family. “We matched the layout to our lifestyle, habits and needs.”

With a blank slate and a fortuitously southfacing lot before her, Chambers began designing a home that marries the indoors and outdoors. The dwelling, built by general contractor Bill Jetton and his team, draws inspiration from the shapes of a farmhouse but has an aesthetic rooted in a more classical vocabulary—the architect describes the result as clean and contemporary with a comfortable and livable style. “It goes back to forms and concepts that we’re all familiar with— simple gables, symmetry and proportion—but it’s an interpretation,” she says. The home’s footprint follows its long and rectangular lot, its two wings connected by a circulatory hallway. “Houses are just big boxes,” Chambers posits, half-jokingly.

“We put all the pieces of what the clients want together, then it becomes about the site, windows and light.” For the exterior, perhaps the home’s boldest feature, Chambers installed traditional beveled siding horizontally in some sections and vertically on others (a contemporary twist for the traditional material), upping the impact with the juxtaposition of black and plain cedar-clad sections. “Talking a client into a mostly black house isn’t easy, but the contrast is exciting,” she says, “I’m referring to both the contrast of light and dark on the exterior, and how the overall house is dark outside but light as you go inside.”

Entering the great room is indeed an aweinspiring experience as daylight streams through tall, mullioned windows. According to designer Stacy Stone, the architectural details and proportions of the rooms made the creation of the interiors a pleasure, citing the linen curtains that frame those large windows as an example. “They

enhance the feeling of spaciousness while adding an additional soft layer to the room,” she explains.

The interior color palette is a muted reflection of the home’s exterior and gardens. “We selected this palette in order to play with the light in the larger volumes of the house,” notes Stone. As for the sophisticated yet straightforward forms of the furniture and accessories, she says: “The house is like an elevated country house. To match it, we kept things simple, and not heavy.”

When sourcing furniture, finishes and fabrics the designer says balancing aesthetics with livability was key. “We selected pale fabrics for the living room, but all are highly durable. We designed the family room sofa to withstand—even welcome— being jumped on. The two matching ottomans are created with storage inside and have reversible tops: a cushy side for feet and a wooden side for tabletop activities,” says Stone. As proof this furniture is ready for anything, the designer notes the custom stone-and-metal breakfast table is sturdy enough to withstand any child clambering that might occur.

Upstairs are the family bedrooms: a cloud-like retreat for the parents and imaginative bedrooms for the children “The kids love their bedrooms with lofts and secret hideouts,” says the wife.

Outside, landscape architect Frederika Moller also took creative inspiration from Chambers’ design. “The landscape creates a connection between the architecture in the front area and the back of the property through clean, simple lines,” she says. “The homeowners requested a garden design with a strong indoor-outdoor connection, integrating entertaining areas as well as a large play space with the swimming pool as a focal point.” Bringing it all to life are Grecian laurels, bougainvillea, jasmine and ornamental grasses, with crape myrtles for summer blooms and maples for autumn color. “We love seeing the kids move freely between the family room, great room and outside, and the lengthy yard is an ideal playing field for games,” notes the husband.

It’s that livability, inside and out, that makes this a very “realistic” house, according to the architect.

“This residence is luxurious, but also comfortable— a perfect balance,” Chambers notes. For Stone, that state of equilibrium is something tangible. “This home’s feel-good factor is a sense of ‘ahh,’ ” she says.

“Entering it provides an immediate feeling of calm energy and well-being.”
