Originally from Arkansas, emerging abstractionist Ashley Treece moved to Nashville on a whim in 2019 but made her mark quickly, kicking off commissions for private collectors, a children’s clothing brand, album art for rock bands and designer collaborations. As she preps for a slated show at the Sometimes Art Collective later this summer, Luxe snagged time for a chat. ashleytreece.com What inspires you? Making the mundane aspects of daily life feel significant, memorializing seemingly inconsequential moments. I’m focused on the feeling: excitement, contentment, nostalgia.

Which other artists move you?

Historically, Henri Matisse.

I love the marriage between his cutouts and his paintings—how they’re so different yet work in harmony. Contemporaneously, Chloe Wise: She’s an artist with something to say. I also love Danny Fox’s work; his paintings are playful at first glance, but actually very complex and gritty.

What is it about Nashville that nurtures your creativity?

There’s a grassroots art scene here that I love—a lot of camaraderie. I wasn’t here very long before the pandemic hit, so I’m excited to see that scene return full force.

By opening the George Gallery on Charleston’s Bogard Street in 2013, Anne Siegfried knew she was doing something monumental. At the time, the Holy City had few sources for abstract and non-objective art. And the Tennessee native—who’d worked for Martha’s Vineyard’s prestigious Granary Gallery post-grad—wasn’t pushing traditional. A move to a 1771 building on Broad Street in 2018 was followed by a chance to expand to the second floor in early 2021, doubling Siegfried’s square footage for showcasing icons (William M. Halsey, Corrie McCallum) and newcomers (Yvonne Robert, Damian Stamer) alike.

“I’ve rarely met a color I didn’t like,” reveals Beth Hubrich, owner of the new Mary & Wilma studio in downtown Homewood, Alabama.

Since first launching her vintage resale concept—named after the two beloved grandmothers who inspired her love for collecting— online in 2017, Hubrich’s enthusiastic curation has become an invaluable resource for area designers, even when the store was contained on the upper floor of her own carriage house. COVID created the occasion to relocate, so Hubrich set up shop in a 1950s building on Linden Avenue “with a bit of quirkiness.”

The Jacksonville native’s taste naturally aligns with a retro Florida aesthetic—meaning plenty of wicker, rattan and palm motifs. She notes, “Anything bamboo makes my heart skip a beat.” maryandwilma.com

Any advice for integrating art with interiors? Put your most important piece in your bedroom, so it’s the first thing you see when you wake up. Be selfish with it; don’t just hang it up in your home to impress guests. My favorite photograph is in my bathroom, so I can see it every time I take a bubble bath.

Which artists are on view upstairs? Corrie McCallum, Halsey, of course, Vicki Sher, a Brooklyn-based artist I’ve represented for a long time, and a new one I’m really excited about, Raishad Glover. We had his first show in March.

Did opening your gallery alter the Charleston art scene?

For the first five years, my client base was mostly people moving from other cities (New York, Chicago, D.C.). So my early outreach was mostly to designers. I knew I wasn’t getting walk-in traffic.

But kitsch is me having a coffee table in the shape of a cassette tape. If you’re going all one decade, I think that’s kitsch. But maximalism, to me, is curated objects. Scale is super important. And you have to edit.

What colors are you loving right now? A lot of people shy away from primary colors, but they’re my favorites: I re-covered a vintage chair with a Hudson’s Bay blanket and painted a Swedish clock entirely in yellow.

It’s really important to temper them— with warm woods or a bit of blush— or they can skew preschool.

Asheville touts a wealth of glass workshops, but none more luxurious than Lexington Glassworks. Co-owners Billy Guilford and Geoff Koslow met at Alfred University, a lauded arts school in Upstate New York, before eyeing Western North Carolina—and its proven history of craft-based-art stewardship—as the next frontier.

“We wanted to be in a community where glassblowers, potters, metalsmiths and other creatives are working and thriving,” Koslow notes. Ferreting out a 5,000-square-foot industrial building near the South Slope, the pair tapped St. Louis architect Kyle Wagner to renovate it, then opened in 2015 with the express mission of becoming a regional go-to for custom lighting. The studio and gallery has since become a must-visit for collectors and designers looking to commission the duo’s delicate decanters, colorful bowls and decorative bottles, but for 2021, the guys have gone back to their roots: with a renewed focus on lighting (lamps, sconces, pendants and more complex chandeliers, too).

SW: At first, we were both skeptical about working together. Ben had a new architecture career, but in my interior design practice, I had a desperate need I knew he could fill. For some time he toggled between two jobs. After a while, we asked ourselves: “Are we really going to do this—be married and work together?” We are so aligned in terms of vision, narrative and goals for the client, that in the end it was effortless.

BW: We respond to our clients’ needs and desires, but we are known for a soft minimalism—or, in some ways, a feminine brutalism. SW: I’d be the “feminine” in that phrase. There’s a tension that we think makes projects so exciting—it’s when opposing forces meet. Generally, Ben is more of a minimalist and prefers less adornment. Though I appreciate that, as a designer I like to get in and mess things up a bit. In the end, we value and find meaning in each other’s perspective, and it balances things out.

BW: At work, we don’t have disagreements; it’s more like a merging of ideas. We might have two competing thoughts, but by hashing it out, they eventually merge into one. It’s more of a push and pull than a conflict, and it leads to the best ideas for sure. The end product is so much richer, and more filled with surprise and unexpected elements. SW: We both like to be strategic about lighting, and we always agree on unconventionally shaped rugs, streaky dramatic shadows, sculptural wall art and travertine. BW: She usually wants to put a banquette in every room, and because it’s an architectural intervention in interior design, I agree.

HF: We met in a park in Washington, D.C. She had a Dalmatian, and I love dogs, so I said hello. In truth, I was smitten. A year later, she walked into the architecture office where I was working as a new employee. I was dumbfounded and remembered her after all that time MF: I really didn’t remember him! But we became fast friends. We had a lot in common from the get-go, especially both being architects, and we ended up dating, then marrying and then moving to Los Angeles.

HF: We both have a fascination with Los Angeles architecture and its spirit of experimentation and indoor-outdoor living. MF: I was born on the island of Mallorca, and the Spanish approach to architecture resonates here—it’s a natural, Mediterranean feeling.

HF: We seek simplicity. We hew to stylistically simple solutions that have informal derivations and a quiet aesthetic signature. MF: We begin a project by looking at a client’s rituals. We are more interested in what they do every day, and what they appreciate about their daily moments.

HF: Our process is collaborative. We come up with an idea together and pursue it. Married friends ask us how we do it without arguing, and I tell them that when we’re working we never disagree.

MF: We have skills that complement each other. Hunter is good at committing to a concept or idea, and never steering away from it. I am good at spatial interactions and interventions.

HF: At home, Mariapaz doesn’t want anything in the house that is not beautiful.

So, the simplest elements can become a project. We had a plastic Brita pitcher, and we wanted something more attractive, so it became a search for the most beautiful glass pitcher in the world. MF: It is hard not to work 24/7. We try to have non-work time, but work does permeate everything we do. To us, it is all one life.

HH: We are both from the same town, Woodbury, Connecticut. We met at my parents’ house—my family was building a rock wall, and Rafe heard about it and showed up one day. We knew of each other’s families, but we went to different high schools, and we never met before that day. We both moved to New York City a year later and started dating, and we’ve now been married for 25 years.

HH: When it comes to style, I’d say he’s more adventurous, and bolder with colors.

I’m bold when putting things together; like hanging a Renaissance painting next to a modern Abstract Expressionist painting. RC: I’d say we are on the same page. After 25 years, we can walk into an antique shop, and she will be able to pick out exactly the things I like.

RC: In college, I majored in sculpture and architecture. But my whole family was in construction, so I grew up in construction— I came to design work as a tradesperson. In New York, I started working on renovations of galleries and loft apartments. HH: I was working in publicity for art museums. But Rafe and I were buying homes, fixing them up and selling them on the side—that’s how we first started working together. It was my hobby before it became my full-time job.

RC: In 2003, we got our first opportunity to work together on a project for someone else.

It was what we called the “New Farmhouse” in Sharon, Connecticut. Heide joined me officially halfway through that project as an interior designer. A lot of firms offer just architecture or just interior design—and working with another firm can be a careful dance, making sure you don’t step on any toes and that you are speaking the same language. We have the advantage of speaking the same language.

Energizing her outlook of late, Schicketanz has partnered with several like-minded prefab home companies on executing her designs. As opposed to trucking in materials and labor, the approach cuts time, energy and a staggering amount of construction waste.

“Producing highly customized homes offsite,” she says, “is really the future.”

A home in Tennessee by Bobby McAlpine and Greg Tankersley boasts a connecting barn that doubles as a play area for grandchildren and an easily convertible party space.

In a sea of change, authenticity’s stronghold sets a reassuring undertone.

Extended time at home “has taught us what serves us as a friend,” says McAlpine.

“Decades ago, we were building houses that we learned to want whereas now, people are asking what the truth is about their life.” Adds Tankersley, “Clients are designing forever homes. I don’t think you can build more green than that.”

A strange thing happened this past year: Nobody visited. Stripped of show and distilled to domesticity, slowly, home began to look a bit different. If you ask architecture partners Bobby McAlpine and Greg Tankersley, it began to look like a country house.

“I’ve found that people transfer more of their hearts to their second residence,” explains McAlpine. “A primary home asks, ‘How do I present myself to the world?’ Whereas the second home is all-eyes-off. It’s the truth.” Arguing the shift, the architects cite growing requests for insular amenities like spirited-away offices, accessory dwellings devoted to health and hobby, and outdoor rooms. In the same thread, they’ve observed a return to country home traditions of yesteryear in a departure from open-concept floor plans to “destination kitchens” and defined dining rooms, and in a fresh emphasis on workhorses like mud rooms and cloak rooms. For Tankersley, “beautiful, casual spaces that speak of humility” crystallize the mood switch. “I don’t think anybody finds ego attractive anymore,” he adds.

With e-design now de facto, it’s an interesting time for realizing these shifting ideals of luxury. Architect Peter Pennoyer offers a robust menu of in-house services, from virtual renderings that allow, say, finish sampling under different lighting exposures, to 3D-printed resin models that are accurate down to exterior brick count. The final tier?

Virtual reality, a custom, hyper-realistic model in the cloud that clients access via headset, allowing them to “visit” and further specify their home before ground breaks. The technology has proved valuable on the back end, too. “During Covid, we’ve had meetings between our Manhattan office and our engineers in Connecticut where we’re all ‘together’ in a house in Florida, slapping Post-it notes on a virtual wall,” he laughs. “I think it challenges us to do things that are even more special for each project.”

Technology is also fighting climate change. In California, architect Mary Ann Schicketanz has been championing sustainability for decades. Net-zero principles are as integral to her practice as permits, yet looking forward, she says, will require a more radical stance. “We build the same way we did 5,000 years

Manhattan architecture-engineering firm edg’s custom interior wall panels and coverings—the first to be designed entirely by Artificial Intelligence—utilize a client’s design preferences and complex technology to offer endless options of visually compelling surfaces.

“I don’t think this is a flash in the pan,” says Josephson. “The more people see that this is achievable, the more people are going to want it and pursue it.”

Creating surfaces with an interesting and compelling presence is exactly what Manhattan architecture-engineering firm edg is doing with its new customizable interior wall applications. While leveraged through 3D printing and AI technology, the firm offers “organic forms” consumers wouldn’t traditionally find in a contemporary box-like apartment building.

“Living in a very ornamental city,” says the firm’s founder, John J. Meyer, “there is a natural desire to be creative when construction is extremely limited to brick and concrete.” Using hundreds of thousands of permutations from one algorithm to create these patterns, the options are limitless when it comes to creating wavelike, fluted or densely repeating patterns.

This reinvigorated biomimicry reminds us that as humans we crave a connection to nature, and as interest in sustainability grows, the future will always be organic.

“No one can deny in these designs that there’s dynamism and movement,” says Josephson. “The things we celebrate most, even in classical art, are decidedly organic.”

It’s no coincidence that fluted, linear designs are making a major comeback. Often visible on surfaces and architectural details—think interior walls, exterior siding, stairwells and furnishings with wood grains—architects and designers say the undulating design is a nod to nature, offering a soothing, pleasing effect that’s right for the times.

“Many believe the art you hang on the wall is what gives a home character,” says architect Kevin Alter of Alterstudio Architects. “However, I believe architecture allows walls to have their own charisma and not just as a kind of neutral surface, but actually something that has presence. I think that is powerful.” The oscillating details create a sense of coziness—akin to hygge— and standout visual appeal, especially when applied to wood materials, Alter explains.

Similarly, Jonathan Friedman of Torontobased architecture studio Partisans says these striking applications allude to the modernism movement. “It’s a mashup—a lot of different eras are resurfacing right now,” he says. “By looking back and resynthesizing them, we can actually reinvigorate the architecture of today.”

The firm’s Fold House project in southern Ontario, which showcases an undulating pool house structure enveloped into the side of a hill, puts the modern organic concept front and center. Cofounder Alex Josephson says that as these sculptural forms become more accessible, they grow more popular in the residential world.

Designer Jennifer Bunsa aims for each project to be distinct. “I like for the personality of my clients to shine through—it should really be all about them,” she explains. When the time came to renovate a residence in Connecticut for homeowners in the food and wine industry, devoting a separate area in the house to a beautiful bar was agreed upon from the outset. jenniferbunsa.com Where is the bar located in the house?

The renovated room you see here is actually a connector between two historic structures that date back to 1790. It’s really the first thing you see when you walk in the front door. I wanted the shiplap to echo the exterior of the old farmhouse while the reclaimed beams nod to original wooden posts unearthed during building.

How is this spot used? Because of the homeowners’ line of work, we wanted to craft a special space for pouring beautiful wine and stirring cocktails—this is important to them. The wife also makes coffee here each morning, sits down and has a moment to herself after the children go to school. I like to think this nook provides a calming influence at any time of the day.

Talk to us about the materials. The idea was to create contrast within the room but to keep it elevated with warmer tones and textures like the charred pine cabinetry, striking marble surfaces and unlacquered brass hardware, which is used throughout the home. I worked closely with Amuneal on the design and they completely understood the vision!

In Weston, Connecticut, Jennifer Bunsa incorporated a Vola faucet, Miele coffee maker and Sub-Zero wine refrigerator into the bar space she designed with Amuneal, which features charred pine cabinetry and brass detailing. Benjamin Moore’s Simply White decorates the walls; the leather chairs are by Bassam Fellows.

It’s common to see these areas against a wall but Jennifer Bunsa took a look at every angle in her project and created a beautiful combination with mounted, see-through shelving that incorporates the rest of the home.

Consider the finishes. Texture is very important and can actually create depth and warmth within a space. Shou sugi ban was used here, and we actually take the wood and char it, creating a very tactile effect.

Fabricate a focal point. Concealed bars used to be very popular but now people are really embracing these elegant schemes and making them an anchor of the room.

Mix up shelving. Amuneal offers open and closed storage, as shown here. Sometimes you want to hide the mess. Doors can create a nice weight, while open shelving adds airiness.

Jolee Fennebresque of Fennebresque Interiors knew that a moody statement bar was on her client’s must-have list for her new-build home in Charlotte, North Carolina. But it wasn’t until Fennebresque saw the Tropical Storm Quartzite at the stone yard that the scheme started to take shape: the honey tones of the countertops

complement a custom brown-black paint color, setting the ideal backdrop for the art adorning the walls. To add warmth, she opted for brass detailing unifying the hardware, lighting, sink and faucet. Just ask designer Danielle Balanis, who swathed the walls of her office in an uplifting sage green and the ceilings in a sunny paisley wallpaper. Formerly the shadowy basement of her Mountain Brook, Alabama residence, Balanis made it her mission to imbue the newly crafted work-from-home space with optimism and inspiration, relying on garden-fresh tones and her collections of cherished artworks and antiques. “The colors are healing,” she says. “It’s my cocoon of creativity. I come down here, get lost and find my groove.”

Raised between Istanbul and Washington, D.C., interior designer Sara Bengur has a unique perspective on color associations. Luxe caught up with Bengur in the vibrant family room of a Manhattan client to hear her hot take on hue. sarabengur.com Where does a palette begin? I start by going to my clients’ homes with a giant bag full of fabrics, paint samples and carpets. I tell them to choose textures and colors they like— no stress, no ‘where would it go?’—just pure instinct. The pile they create becomes my starting point.

Tell us about this room. The inspiration was the Proportio Exhibit at Palazzo Fortuny at the Venice Biennale, which my clients had seen and loved. In Venice, you notice lots of layers and rich colors. The room faces east onto a courtyard, so I felt using warmer tones of red and orange would ground the space.

Advice for the color-shy? There’s a big difference between vegetable and commercial dyes. One thing I’ve found is that if you stick with natural vegetable dyes, and combine similar tones, you don’t get that unnecessary stimulation.

What shades bring you comfort? Growing up in Turkey and vacationing in the Mediterranean, it was layers of ochre, terra-cotta and turquoise—whereas blue and green are the calming colors of the west. I find it fascinating that different cultures have different views on what nurtures.

Where are you drawing inspiration lately? Anywhere!

It could be an artwork or a great dress. The other night, I was watching the movie Luxor, and spied this Egyptian ferry painted in the most beautiful patterns of blue, red and peach. I had to pause and snap a picture.

I’ll probably end up incorporating it somewhere.

PERFECT COCKTAIL “People think of our work as colorful, but if you actually look it’s quite neutral and restrained in a way,” insists designer Beata Heuman. Take for instance this London snug, where orange tigers prance across the walls and a theatrically canopied azure sofa stares down a moss green rug. Somehow, the tone is serene.

“Generally, I do neutral backdrops with flashes of color where you wouldn’t expect it,” explains Heuman, whose whimsical portfolio shines in her new book, Every Room Should Sing. “In this room, the traditional order would have been plain walls and pattern on the furniture, so we tried to invert that.”

Another trick: Using the same white paint across a home’s ceilings and woodwork, a move she deems “really important to tying things together.”

Heuman credits her philosophy to a deep-seated passion for art, citing Vermeer’s color mastery in particular as aspiration. “Think of his paintings.

They’re all dark and neutral, and then you’ll spot these flashes—a white collar, a red lip.” Similarly, “every room needs a pop of color,” she says. “Here, it’s the red beak of the bird on the pillow, and I have to say, that pillar box red is great. If a room doesn’t feel quite vibrant enough, adding a tiny splash of it can really lift things.” beataheuman.com

My dad worked in finance, but he was very artistic. When I was a child, we’d spend weekends at the tiki bar in my grandparents’ basement painting and drawing. In college, I studied art history (as well as business), and I’ve always admired landscapes in particular.

There’s this pensive, thoughtful quality to oil paintings that I love staring at—something about those rich, botanical greens.

Which brings us to Covid. I had become a bit of a workaholic, rolling out of bed, crawling into sweatpants, going to the computer, and before I knew it, the day was done. I was looking for a hobby, and I thought, ‘Why not try oil painting?’

I did a ton of research, ordered my materials, and set out for the park near my apartment.

I have to tell you, it was … truly embarrassing.

There I was setting up the easel with an instruction manual, dabbing at my painter’s palette. At first there was this fear of judgment, but pushing through that fear to the other side was really wonderful.

As the weather grew cold, I came inside and realized I needed a dedicated space for my hobby. Rekindling my love of botanical green, I began refreshing my apartment, starting in

the living room where I got rid of my enormous dining table (since I haven’t been entertaining at scale), adding a tea table for meals and artwork in its place. Then, I began pulling in threads of green scattered through my home.

My favorite decorative screen—a gift from deGournay—used to sit in the foyer where I never saw it. Now, it anchors the space.

Similarly, I had a beautiful Tai Ping carpet in my bedroom, where it’s wonderful, sweeping pattern of green and blue was hidden under a mattress. Now, I enjoy it every day. I added plants and reconceived my art collection.

You know those moments when you just feel chic at home? The other night, I was FaceTiming with a friend, drinking from a green Baccarat glass, and I thought, ‘I feel chic!’ And I think it’s because I’m living in color. Green is amazing: It’s that perfect lagoon water, that perfect emerald jewel, that perfect eye color.

Architect Thad Truett used stone flooring from Materials Marketing and a forged stair railing by Calhoun Design & Metalworks to create an oldworld feel in the entryway of this Sea Island, Georgia, home. Designer Suzanne Kasler mixed vintage finds—such as a chair from Caché Antiques in Los Angeles upholstered in Fortuny fabric—with contemporary furnishings, such as the Ironware International table and Formations lantern.

nce upon a time—in 1928 to be exact—The Cloister at Sea Island opened its doors and, with its enchanting Mediterranean style (markedly different than the prevailing vernacular of the surrounding Lowcountry), the hotel laid the groundwork for a local aesthetic that has reverberated over the decades.

The resort’s telltale hallmarks—terra-cotta roof tiles, sheltered courtyards, elegant archways— inspired one Atlanta-based couple as they sought to build a vacation home on the Georgia island.

For this, they turned to their longtime designer, Suzanne Kasler, and local architect Thad Truett.

“I wanted something that exuded old Sea Island style,” the wife expresses.

A location with outstanding Atlantic views— formerly home to a rambling 1930s cottage— proved ideal for a materials-forward concept.

“The owners wanted something in stone and stucco, and we took painstaking effort to get the color and texture right,” Truett notes. Working with general contractor Chip Evans, the architect settled on Texas shellstone, whose sandy tone and chiseled face melded organically with the home’s creamcolored walls and reclaimed French roof tiles. In a nod to The Cloister’s influence, Truett employed pecky cypress on ceilings throughout the house— most evident in the covered loggia, breakfast area, upper stairwell and study. Rooms were positioned to take advantage of the seascape (“every bedroom, except for the nursery, has a view of the ocean,” the wife reveals), while Mediterranean flourishes, such as the classical quatrefoil, serve as consistent decorative accents. “We carried that motif throughout the house, from the entry gates to the kitchen tile backsplash,” Truett explains.

For the interiors, Kasler capitalized on the architecture’s elegant, old-world precedent. Having designed an Atlanta residence and lake home for the couple previously, she and the clients already spoke the same design love language—which translates to sophisticated yet relaxed interiors. “The wife really has a love for classic, timeless design,” says Kasler who, collaborating with project manager and designer Keith Arnold, delivered comfort without

compromising refinement. And while location was imperative to the design, “it really doesn’t feel like a beach house,” she notes. “It’s more like a primary home, with its antiques and beautiful pieces.”

To wit, a joint buying trip Kasler and the wife took to Los Angeles produced Murano glass mirrors, French chandeliers, an Italian shelf and substantial antiques with a gravitas befitting the home’s scale. The designer offset these with a backdrop of luminous Venetian plaster, employing framed scenic panels in striking aqua as living room accents. “She really gets into beautiful, subtle colors,” the wife effuses, pointing to the airy blue in the kitchen, as well as a sand-andblue palette in the main bedroom. Though colors traditionally thought of as “beachy,” in Kasler’s hands, they’re decidedly elevated.

More vibrant moments come from an eyecatching Turkish silk tapestry in the entryway and punches of burnt orange—appearing on the living room’s sumptuous damask draperies and a boldly lacquered bar. Thanks to multiple seating groups, the living area is conducive to gatherings but suitable for moments of solitude, too. “I love just sitting in this room when no one’s here,” the wife muses. The poolside patio overlooking the ocean offers another favorite escape: It’s where she begins her day with coffee, then ends it with the same view and a grapefruit cocktail.

For the grounds, landscape designer Alex Smith likewise referenced a Southern European vernacular. “We planted a very old specimen olive tree to give the entry courtyard an instant aged quality,” he notes, adding that the same effect was achieved through custom-grown lavender trumpet vines for the courtyard walls.

“On the ocean side, we had to consider variables such as wind, salt spray and sun exposure,” Smith continues. So, he brought in salt-tolerant Bougainvillea from South Florida to pin against the rear of the house.

Collectively, these thoughtful details from the design team pay faithful tribute to Sea Island’s past paired with a timelessness to carry the home forward for generations to come. “Theirs is a big, and growing, family,” Kasler notes. “So, this project was about more than decorating; it was creating a way of life.”

ometimes you find exactly what you want when you’re not looking for it. Such was the case for contemporary artist Sally King Benedict when she stumbled upon a real estate listing for “a jewel” of a home, as she describes it, in the established Atlanta enclave of Tuxedo Park. Though she and her husband, George Read II, weren’t on the market for a new property, “I told him, ‘We have got to go see this house; it looks like a little dream.’ ” First built in the forties, the now-French Norman-style residence had fallen into disrepair over the years, leading to roof leaks, a cracked driveway and decades-old plantings of boxwood hedges and English climbing roses that had tangled the nearly 2-acre lot into a scene Sally likens to Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden: a treasure waiting to be revealed. But since vision is something the artist has in no short supply, she was delighted by the possibilities she saw—and that was plenty to seal the deal.

To return the residence to its former glory, the couple tapped builder Tim Townsend, a craftsman Sally has known since her early 20s (“he used to work for my uncle; he’s basically like family,” she says). Townsend and his cadre of tradespeople thus embarked on an intensive top-to-bottom renovation focused foremost on interiors. The goal was to reinforce the structure while responding to Sally’s boundless ingenuity. “Everything we did was based on her ideas; what she wanted the house to look like,” says Townsend, whose team tackled functional components as well as aesthetic ones: adding floorto-ceiling blackened steel windows, opening up walls and replacing an existing single-sided fireplace with a double-sided version—all in the interest of capitalizing on the property’s ethereal quality of light.

Through her work as a prolific artist who has collaborated with interior designers around the world, Sally has exceptional instincts. So, she drew upon her seasoned knowledge of art history, composition and balance to honor the home’s existing architectural details with a serene neutral palette—introducing fresh elements that reflect her and George’s effortless global style. The pair added herringbone hardwoods to the living and dining rooms, plus a new marble-topped wine bar serving both spaces, before updating their home’s circular library with pine-paneled walls and a soaring vaulted ceiling. Wood paneling was retained in

the kitschy, ’70s-esque bedroom now belonging to 8-year-old son River—a space Sally has since adorned with framed art and photographs. “It continues to be my favorite room,” she reveals.

Both spouse’s upbringings fostered a deep appreciation for art—George’s father, Charleston artist and appraiser George E. Read, formerly sourced French paintings for Sotheby’s—a factor that aided the couple as they built their own growing collection, now displayed in ever-evolving placements throughout the residence. Photographs by Sam Kweskin and Masao Yamamoto, a pair of Aurélie Guillaume cloisonné pins (they “sit on our shelf in the library like two miniature paintings,” Sally says) and paintings by abstract artists Kiki Slaughter and Mary Nelson Sinclair are standouts. As an artist herself, Sally recognizes the immense value of collecting, so she does not waffle about making such investments.

“We don’t really have a goal in mind as far as collecting art,” she says. “If we see something we love, and we can afford it, we buy it.”

The verdant grounds that had so charmed Sally and her husband received marked improvements by landscape architect Missy Madden, with ongoing assistance from Sally’s mother, Cissy Benedict, an avid gardener. Keeping mature plantings of classic Southern flora including edgeworthia, dogwoods, azaleas and roses was a top priority, as was adding structure. “The Read’s house has great scale and connection between the home and the exterior,” notes Madden, who enhanced the front motor court using concrete pavers softened by turf in the joints, refreshed the property’s hardscaping and added lush greenery to enhance an existing staircase climbing the backyard’s sloping hill.

Since the scene was practically begging for a resort-style pool, Madden created a haven for both adults, River, and new baby girl, Bowie, based on the couple’s own sketches. Ever hands-on, George even flew to Austin to personally source the creamy Texas limestone for its clean-lined hardscape. Finally, a longtime friend of Madden’s, architect Amanda Orr, teamed up with Townsend to augment the oasis with a chic pool house structure that appears to have always been in place.

With its privacy, amenities and effortless luxury, “it’s like a little sanctuary where it feels like we’re always on vacation,” says Sally, proud to honor her home’s European hallmarks and rambling quirks in equal measure. “We love it. We saw its potential from the very beginning, and it became everything we wanted it to be.”

prooting one’s entire life and moving cross-country is no small feat—but that was the leap of faith made by artist Kristen van Diggelen Sloan in 2014, when the veteran Californian traded life in San Francisco for a 12-acre farmstead in York County, South Carolina. There, she and husband Michael created something of a rural compound, surrounded by heirloom crops, native fauna and ample inspiration. “I live a very quiet existence, with everything I need around me,” Sloan says.

It’s a life story Sloan has essentially impressed upon her line of handmade dinnerware and ceramics, vanIvey. From filigrees to Rococo florals, their motifs preserve vestiges of Sloan’s past and present on both coasts. “I’m trying to bridge these California roots with Southern ones,” says the artist, whose sketchbooks brim with fragments of places close to her heart. California seeps through in softer silhouettes that echo her love of Spanish Mission architecture, while local influences show up in splayed lines she borrowed from South Carolina’s iconic palmetto leaf.

The ceramics concept, launched in 2013 as a parallel to Sloan’s fine-art practice, derives from her full family name, Ivey van Diggelen, plus the hand-carved Jacobean furnishings her Dutch immigrant grandparents brought from home.

Awed by these since childhood, Sloan says they directly influenced her signature Baroque style.

“I love literally taking details from antiques and using those patterns to figure out the ceramics,” says the artist, who sometimes employs silicone putty to capture intricate ornamentations for her wares. Executing each piece is a complex process, beginning with the pottery wheel, then combining hand-building and multi-step molding techniques. For the clay, Sloan favors gray midfire stoneware, which proves durable but also “allows a lot of the delicacy of the design to come through,” she notes. To preserve these fine details, she prefers simple white glazes that prevent “losing the simplicity of the forms.”

Following a hiatus to focus on painting, Sloan’s vanIvey venture returns in a retail capacity this month: through her husband’s eponymous John Michael Kitchens showroom in Charlotte.

Core to the relaunch is a meditative mandala dinnerware design—a motif threading the intimate origins of Sloan’s ceramics to her fineart explorations of the patterns that connect us all. “The big question in my practice is about exploring who we are,” she says. “I’m always looking for the conduits to get me there.”

hen Cassie Mayatte turned 40, her husband, Chris, gave her something that couldn’t exactly be giftwrapped: a block of land in Collierville, Tennessee.

“We’d been dreaming of this neighborhood for years, driving through it often, but we never thought we would live here,” Cassie says of the historic Memphis suburb. “But once we found an open lot available with the lake in the backyard, we just fell in love and had to have it.”

The close-knit couple, who runs a business together, wished for views of the lake more than anything—no easy feat given the positioning of the lot. Fortunately, architect Brad Shapiro loves a challenge. By employing a linear layout parallel to the water’s edge, he managed to maximize lake views from the bedrooms, family room, kitchen, playroom and outdoor living areas.

“We never dreamed of it the way he drew it, but he just nailed it,” says Cassie, adding that Shapiro took the time to understand their habits and lifestyle to devise a home that would fit them and their two young daughters perfectly. Shapiro’s solution: a mostly glass, modern residence that wouldn’t look out of place among the neighborhood’s more traditional vernacular—while also amplifying natural light.

“We solved this with traditional forms and window shapes along the public view of the house,” explains Shapiro, who worked with residential designer Scott Baker and general contractor Hank Hill to realize an open, airy floor plan with ultra-high ceilings. “On the private portion of the house—the lake side—it really does become a transparent, almost all glass house,” Shapiro says.

The architect and his clients both credit Hill’s unerring perfectionism for the project’s success: everything from the glass-encased breezeway to the precise position of the gas lanterns out front.

“Hank is the definition of a best-in-class craftsman,” Shapiro reveals.

Perhaps nowhere are these achievements more keenly felt than in the entryway, where a grand staircase gracefully swoops down to the whiteoak floors. It’s a curving component the couple’s designer, Leslie Murphy, was instrumental in

designing and positioning in concert with Shapiro.

“That was a unique and special moment for me,” says Murphy, who also ensured visitors would catch a glimpse of the custom black-and-white mural by artist Frances Berry Moreno decorating the barrel-vaulted ceiling in the daughters’ playroom high above.

Despite the grandeur of the residence, “the Mayattes didn’t want it to be a fussy, museumlike place,” Murphy explains. “Cassie wanted luxurious, yet simple and family friendly; striking that balance was super important.” Working with project manager Caroline Lovelace, Murphy curated an aesthetic she describes as “redefined Southern luxury.” Employing materials such as metal, concrete and acrylic brought glamour to the home’s light, bright floor plan. Adds Murphy: “Cassie was drawn to those little pops of sparkle and the shine—so it was about how to integrate all of those pieces and still make it functional.”

Like Shapiro, Murphy took the time to get to know her clients so that the home would harmonize with the way they live. “They wanted intentionality around each space. They’re truly so committed to one another and their happy place is at home together,” she explains. Thus, the Mayattes enjoy rooms specifically dedicated to daily activities—living, working, playing, creating, exercising, relaxing, watching movies—meaning they almost never feel the need to leave.

Landscape designer Marley Fields’ approach to the grounds successfully fused the home’s modern interior and traditional exterior elements. “My vision was to keep the hardscapes and plant selections simple yet refined, to complement the architecture rather than compete,” she notes. By planting en masse with varied textures of green, plus blooms in a limited palette of white, soft pink and purple, she achieved a calming and confident scheme that enhances another must-have for the Mayattes: their outdoor space overlooking the lake.

“Memphis summers can be very stagnant, but here, because there’s a breeze off the water, we spend most of our waking hours outside in the summertime, just enjoying nature and our family.”

Chris says. “We’re not exaggerating when we say virtually every area of the home is amazing in our minds. We were able to do it just the way we wanted, and it turned out even better than we hoped.”
