There’s a lively dialogue in the design world of late centered around the notion of “original” design and copying. I prefer to tweak the adjective to “genuine,” since everything is ultimately derivative. What is original, after all? Two great creatives of the world, Steve Jobs and Pablo Picasso both are quoted as saying, “Good artists copy, great artists steal.” Hmm. What they really mean is: be influenced by an idea that inspires you, turn it on its head and make it into something entirely different. Don’t imitate...create.
Here’s what I know about design as an editor who lives it every day. There is an abundance of riches to be inspired by if you’re curious, open to observation and educating yourself about design history. There are artists, creatives and makers across the country who turn out interesting work developed with integrity. Seek them out and support them, dear reader, for they drive design and “originality,” pushing everything to be ever more captivating, compelling and joyful. As design should be.

“Chet always leaves room for fun and expression,” says Nikolai Haas, one half of The Haas Brothers, the creative powerhouses who’ve hired architect Chet Callahan to design their new North Hollywood headquarters, set to open in 2022. “Our last space wasn’t focused on visitors, so we’re excited to have this place feel like we’re inviting guests into our home,” adds Simon Haas. Here, Callahan shares his insights. chetcallahan.com
What do Simon and Nikolai want for their new space? A homey place to host. The plans include a gallery, a restaurant-style kitchen and dining space, offices, art production spaces and group meeting spaces, with their art displayed throughout. Niki and Simon envision a choreographed experience where the whole compound functions as a display. Describe the vibe. Industrial gallery-meetsfun house-meets-collector’s clubhouse. Is there any artistic overlap? Niki and Simon are creators, so they’re contributing murals, door hardware, bathroom fixtures and painted tiles to the environment. We’re also using their art and materials as color and material inspiration. What makes your firms click? We’re like-minded. Basically, it’s a lovefest of mutual admiration.

This first monograph from Solano Beach-based landscape architecture firm OJB is a long-awaited tome. Founded in 1989 as the Office of James Burnett, the practice is responsible for some of the country’s most innovative, wellness-driven public gardens. The book highlights projects in New England and the Midwest, as well as those closer to home, including Hall Wines in Napa Valley, Sunnylands, the reimagined Annenberg Estate in Rancho Mirage, and the mixed-use center The Campus at Playa Vista and its adjacent parks. “We keep trying new things, not for their novelty, but to keep advancing our knowledge and our craft,” Burnett explains in the book. “There is a spirit of adventure in everything we do.” monacellipress.com

After working with Chef Daniel Boulud at his Manhattan eatery Boulud Sud, Chef Travis Swikard has returned home to San Diego to open Callie in the city’s developing East Village. To realize his dream space, he called on designer Greg Bleier of Studio Unltd in Los Angeles—the firm responsible for award-winning restaurant designs like L.A.’s Bavel—who gave us the dish. calliesd.com Tell us about Callie’s design. It’s playful and elegant—similar to how Travis does food. We latched onto his story of coming home, like a pirate returning from the Mediterranean, but he also surfs and skates, so we embraced that too. The bar’s design is like a wave barrel capturing the sun on the water, and the banquettes have a skate park vibe with “concrete”-like seats and a rail. What are a few of your favorite design moments? The restaurant’s custom Cor-Ten steel-and-wood door handles set things apart the moment you arrive. But the bar is my favorite place. It’s unusual and fun, and it really captures Travis’s energy. And how would you describe the private dining room? It’s designed like a captain’s quarters and is a decadent, glowing space displaying gifts Travis has received. Sheer drapes make it private, but floor-to-ceiling windows allow you to see into the kitchen.

Half-sisters Hilary Gibbs and Georgie Smith share a familial love of tile: Gibbs’s mother, Melinda Earl, founded Stone Impressions, where both women still play a role. But the duo’s new side venture, Livden, focuses on their own original decorative tiles made with recycled and post-consumer materials. “When I told my mother I’d been experimenting with my own designs, she immediately handed me her tool kit of art supplies and gave me her best design tips,” recalls Gibbs. Taking their cues from Southern California’s geographic diversity and rich architectural history, the sisters have produced innovative geometric designs, available in a palette of earthy hues. “We’re inspired by color’s ability to evoke certain feelings,” adds Smith, noting a meditative red and their desertinspired collection, Painted Sands, that debuted in July. “Our designs mirror the California lifestyle, from laid-back and sunny to bohemian and modern,” adds Gibbs. “They’re playful statementmakers that can give any space a punch of personality.” livden.com

NB ESSENTIAL BY NATASHA BARADARAN Natasha Baradaran normally finds design inspiration through travel, but over the course of the last year, she’s discovered myriad good design ideas right at home. Her latest furniture collection, NB Essential, is an ode to looking inward and paring down. “I believe in the power of touch and feel, and how certain materials can enhance a sense of calm in your home,” says the designer, noting the collection’s use of plush fabrics and vegan-dyed parchment. The line, which includes seating, tables and case pieces, also embraces natural woods. “Its depth and richness just felt more of the moment, as opposed to slick metals,” she adds. natashabaradaran.com
“The objects we surround ourselves with have the power to impact the way we feel,” says Michaele Simmering, co-founder of furniture company Kalon. And this year, Simmering and her husband and Kalon partner Johannes Pauwen found themselves “craving grounding pieces.” From that emotion comes the Highland collection, which includes an architect’s desk, a dining chair, a leather- or linen-upholstered bench and an extending dining table. “Designing a 10-foot dining table is an unapologetically hopeful gesture toward more festive, communal times we hope are coming,” Simmering adds. The designs, all solid oak, are inspired by California’s rugged landscape and seek to explore how living with the grandness of nature can strengthen our relationship to it. kalonstudios.com

Newport Beach-based designer Raili Clasen has partnered with Salty Furniture to create a limited-edition version of one of the company’s surfboard-shaped coffee tables. The designer gave her table Jean Prouvé-style beechwood legs for added height and stability and a lightweight marble-look top with rounded lines inspired by the Malibu funboard. “My background in the surf industry made this a very natural collaboration consideration,” says Clasen, explaining that the handcrafted tabletops use traditional surfboard foam and epoxy resin. “The moment they unwrapped the table for the launch, I quickly replaced my living room coffee table with the white marble version. Five years ago, Stefan Ormenisan took a leap when he launched a bespoke wallcoverings line—the first of its kind in his home country of Romania—with his business partner Victor Serban. “This was one of the biggest challenges—convincing people from around the world that we are doing serious things with great taste and beautiful stories,” says Ormenisan. Today, the creative director spends much less time convincing and a lot more time dreaming, as evidenced by the brand’s anniversary collection, Transylvanian Roots—a transportive maximalist assemblage of fabrics, wallpapers and furnishings emblematic of his homeland’s rich Bohemian spirit. “Once an independent country, Transylvania was a melting pot of peoples, cultures and traditions, from Saxons, Hungarians and Romanians to Székelys, Ashkenazi Jews, Armenians and Gypsies,” says Ormenisan, who takes pride in his mixed Romanian, Saxon, Hungarian and Armenian heritage. “When creating these pieces, we drew on the idyllic memories of our childhood summers spent with grandparents in the countryside.” In those traditional homes, embroidered textiles softened wooden furniture while trimmed and tasseled lamps brightened winter nights—themes reflected in the collection’s jubilant cushions, lampshades and wall art. Ornamental and decorative motifs in lush reds, yellows and greens recall vintage patterns and color palettes used by folk artists for hundreds of years, while painterly botanicals reference Central Asian suzanis and Slavic and Ottoman influences. “I love the diversity in

such a small area—all of the traditions and customs belonging to different cultures that live together to form the authentic heritage of this place,” says the creative director. While Ormenisan believes Transylvanian Roots, with its detailed embroidery and handmade finishes, is equally befitting a rural cottage or city setting, he muses it would shine in a stately Georgian manse in London. “I imagine a large garden with a stylish topiary, a monumental entrance and a sumptuous drawing room with a large-buttoned sofa upholstered in the finest cotton velvet with embroidered and printed fabrics,” envisions the creative director. But for now, Ormenisan will dream a little closer to home. With his business partner, he recently purchased a hunting manor in the Romanian town of Presaca that once belonged to noble Hungarian families—making it the ideal backdrop for the brand’s storybook prints like Erdely, Vixen and Enchanted Woodland. “Surrounded by mystical scenery with smooth hills and vast woodland, when you enter this village, you feel the old history entering your body; a timeless vault,” he explains. “I love how time has stopped here, creating a world full of originality and romance.”

When describing the allure of a mural, New York artist Anne Harris calls out their immersive nature saying, “They command an interior, and they engulf a physical space and transport you.” She’s been practicing the art form ever since she first viewed Italian frescoes in person, an experience that was so powerful she describes it as “head spinning.” Harris notes that while wallpaper adds color and pattern to an interior, murals offer something else. “With wallpaper, you have a repeating pattern,” she says. “But with a mural, you have interest that continues around a room, and you can see the intent, the perspective and the hand of the artist.” Painting murals is an ancient art, and they can be found decorating walls throughout the millennia, in places ranging from Egyptian tombs to Pompeiian homes to Indian palaces. But Harris sees the uptick in their recent popularity as a rebellion against “the white-gray-neutral rooms we’ve been living in the last several years.” For some, the word “mural” conjures an image of traditional pastoral settings, but many contemporary muralists embrace an unexpected aesthetic. Take artist JohnPaul Philippe, whose abstract work often contains a series of modern, biomorphic forms. With an architectural approach to his

craft, he pulls inspiration from the spirit of the place where his murals will live. “A lot of my work is an articulation of what is going on around it,” says the artist, who splits his time between New York and Connecticut. He credits his use of color and form to his childhood in Oklahoma, where he had an unofficial apprenticeship with the local billboard painter. “It made me completely unafraid to paint large,” he says. Youthful experiences also influence San Francisco’s Rafael Arana, who began his artistic journey by spraying graffiti on walls around his hometown. Although he is no stranger to classic motifs, his work often has a different flavor—such as a pair of brilliantly hued iguanas that dance across the ceiling of a Presidio Heights mansion. Noting that many of his clients, even those in private residences, are looking for an Instagram-worthy moment, he adds: “Like graffiti, murals are an attention grabber— they stand out and start a conversation.” Arana says it’s that compelling quality that drives demand for his murals—some of which take several weeks of 16-hour days to complete. “A hand-painted mural is customizable and can bring a client’s vision to life,” he says. “It can tell a story the way few other elements can.”

“I’m not an overthinker,” says designer Christian Siriano when it comes to decorating his Westport, Connecticut, home. “I buy pieces that I like and try them out—that’s the fun part of the design process.”
Last spring, Christian Siriano had only just closed on his new house—a 6,000-squarefoot glass-and-stucco dwelling in Westport, Connecticut—when the country went into lockdown. Instead of using that time to slow down and feather his nest, the Project Runway star immediately shifted into superhero mode, rallying his atelier to sew thousands of masks for health care workers. Then, in the months following, he presented a new ready-towear collection, whipped up Covid red carpet looks for Lizzo, Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga and introduced a bridal line. Perhaps most surprisingly, Siriano announced his entry into the home space, launching an interior design studio and debuting a glamorous collection of geometric Postmodern furniture on 1stdibs—all this before wrapping up season 19 of Project Runway. “Yeah, I’m keeping busy,” laughed Siriano when Luxe checked in on the designer at his home in Connecticut.

You’ve said that if you hadn’t gone into fashion, you might have become an interior designer—and now you have. Did this affection for interiors begin when you were a child in Annapolis, Maryland? My mom was really into interior design and as a kid I always visited antiques shops with her. Even though our house had a sort of nautical, Nantucket feel that’s more traditional than my taste now, I have to say, I still love a beachy, coastal room. What did your room look like? I had a lot of stripes and plaids because I was into the Ralph Lauren look. My walls were a bright cobalt blue and filled with paintings from the flea market. I had a picture of Alicia Silverstone from Clueless up too, which is hilarious because now Alicia and I are close friends. Your furniture collection doesn’t play it safe. Share the inspiration. I made
pieces that I wanted. I think the chairs almost look like little people in dresses. They’re modern and neutral in color, but they have warmth and texture. The million-dollar question: How are you doing all this? Running an interiors firm on top of a fashion company is no easy feat. I have two full-time people working with me on interiors. But I’m literally the most insane multitasker there is. Juggling and taking on different types of projects is what I’ve always done. One of my strengths is that I’m not an overthinker. I make decisions very quickly. What’s your secret for working with clients? Projects can take years in highend interior design. We may be a new interiors firm, but I have dealt with some of the most unbelievable, challenging, famous and insane fashion clients in the world. Believe me, I can deal with an indecisive or difficult personality. That, I’m good at.

When one door closes, another door opens— or so they say. For longtime Clarence House creative director and visionary artist Kazumi Yoshida that time came in 2019 when, after nearly 40 years at the legendary textile company and several owners in between, Fabricut acquired the brand making Yoshida’s retirement seem inevitable. Yet instead, the creative director was so touched by the enthusiasm of his new employers that he decided to stay on and begin a new chapter. With the Fabricut partnership in place, Yoshida thought the 60 th anniversary of Clarence House would be the perfect opportunity to pay homage to his original collaborator, Robin Roberts, who founded the brand in 1961.

With Champagne taste and an eye for glamour, Roberts’ atelier quickly became the destination for something unique during the ’60s—gorgeous bolts were coveted by New York society, and the rest of the country soon caught on. As appetite increased for original motifs, Yoshida was hired and his first assignment was to transform an old document from India into a new pattern that eventually became Papiers Japonais, still currently one of the bestselling

Clarence House designs. The dynamic alliance between the two creatives allowed the business to flourish. Sumitra Mattai, Scalamandré Early on, Sumitra Mattai realized that everything around her was designed and created by someone, and she indeed wanted to be that someone. “I always knew I loved textiles, and when I doodled, I doodled in pattern,” says Mattai, now Scalamandré’s senior design director. Growing up in suburban New Jersey with influences from her Guyanese and Indian heritage, Mattai says she couldn’t deny the creative pull. Founded in 1929 by Franco Scalamandré, an Italian immigrant with an engineering background, Scalamandré saw an opportunity for creating silks domestically in lieu of importing them from abroad. Success swiftly followed. From famous estates to the White House to one particular Wes Anderson film, the brand’s designs have made their mark on American culture.

Three years into the role, Mattai is off and running with her natural gift for product design—fashion, fine art and the brand’s archives all inform her ideas. And she has acknowledged that the fabric house means different things to different people, whether it’s a loyal client of 50 years or someone who has recently discovered the company by way of their new partnership with The Inside. As for what’s next, the Sahara collection will debut later this year. Inspired by North Africa, the line boasts large-scale patterns and rich colors. Plus, there’s a new Leaping Cheetah design—a play on the infamous Zebra wallpaper. Surely, this is just the beginning for Mattai. “The magic of seeing something I draw or paint come back as a beautiful design…it never gets old,” she says. scalamandre.com

FORWARD LOOKING Mickey Riad, Fortuny
“We are here for a short amount of time, but Fortuny deserves to be here forever,” observes Mickey Riad, artistic director of the inspirational Italian textile house. With the 100-year anniversary of Fortuny’s Venice factory on the horizon, it’s a time of reflection for the brand. The story begins in the early 1900s when Spanish artist Mariano Fortuny created silk dresses and textiles in Venice. After making a name for himself, the company was lovingly placed in the hands of designer Elsie McNeill Lee in 1949, who, 20 years prior, brought Fortuny to New York’s Madison Avenue and established the brand’s position in the U.S. market. In 1988, Maged Riad bought the company from Lee, and eventually his sons, Mickey and Maury, began working for the new family business. Fast-forward 23 years and Mickey Riad is designing collections and shepherding the brand into the future. But no matter what direction the designs take, Venice, “the fountain of inspiration,” is always at the core. The latest collection, Imago, celebrates not only Venice but its supporting characters— local places and things are woven into the literal and

metaphorical fabric of the company. Barberini (above, top left) is named after the noble Roman family whose Palazzo featured a lush secret garden; the reintroduced Simboli (shown to Riad’s right in portrait above) was used on early notebooks for the brand. The magic is in embracing the originality of Fortuny, while still looking ahead. COLLECTED APPROACH Olivia Deruelle, Manuel Canovas
“I am always looking for treasures,” says Olivia Deruelle, design director at Manuel Canovas, of sourcing inspiration for upcoming collections at the famed French fabric house. Growing up in Brittany, a charming region dotting the coast of France, this idea of collecting pieces from nature and the sea was embedded at an early age and continues to be a common theme in her current role. Coincidently, Monsieur Manuel Canovas, who founded his namesake brand in 1963, was also an incredible collector of art, crafts and antiques, and eventually grew the company internationally to encompass fabrics, wallpapers and carpets. It is this collectors’ sensibility, both from the past and present, that has curated beautiful designs that feel at once au courant and incredibly refined. While color continues to be at the heart of the brand, Deruelle focuses on maximalist, narrative-driven patterns; the result is an eclectic mix infused with happiness and joy. It was fitting then for her first collection released this year, that the focus was on French joie de vivre and exploring the modern interpretation of Toile de Jouy fabrics and wallcoverings. Classic Canovas motifs including Bengale and La Musardiere were recolored in vivid hues, and introductions like Pondicherry and Nara have farther flung influences including Japanese architecture and an Indian palace. Finding joy in the process of textile making is important to the design director as she considers Manuel Canovas’ honored heritage and gently steers the company into the future. “I love the challenge of putting together kitchens and baths, and I really interrogate my clients about how they live in these functional rooms,” says New York-based designer Lilse McKenna, who explains that a lot of wasted space can accumulate if the needs and wants of clients are ignored. For a home on the Eastern Shore of Maryland that dates to 1750, investing in the details—everything from the materials and hardware to the finishes and fittings—allowed the renovated kitchen and bath to maintain its historic feel while still embracing a new and elevated scheme. lilsemckenna.com Where did you start? It was very important to the clients that when embarking upon this renovation, we paid homage to the heritage of the home and brought in elements that felt authentic and even patinated. Cue the tongue-and-groove walls, antique ceiling beams, butcher-block style countertop and pine flooring that we dyed instead of stained in keeping with 18th-century ethos. The kitchen island (previous page) is beautiful! We hung the custom Ann-Morris pot rack to make it feel like an older kitchen, but it really grounds the entire space and balances out the massive island. I also like the collected feel of mixing metals; here we used antique copper pots, brass lighting and fittings, and a treated stainless-steel hood. Some may have rules about finishes but I always just go with what feels right in the space. Talk to us about this extra sink (right)? The homeowners cook and entertain constantly and needed two sinks and dishwashers, so we added a prep area with a charming, hammered copper sink and painted cabinetry. This allows for a bit more storage, so things feel less cluttered. Everyone always ends up in the kitchen and I strive to make sure the details here are just as beautiful as in the rest of the house. In a Maryland home by Lilse McKenna, shown here and on previous page, the kitchen features custom cabinetry painted in Farrow & Ball’s Inchyra Blue and Benjamin Moore’s Ivory White. A House of Rohl pot filler sits above a Lacanche range while Hickory Chair stools upholstered in Holly Hunt leather round out the decoration. Waterworks’ copper sink and fittings adorn the prep area. The architectural scheme is by Michael Elfenbein Design.

SEA CHANGE
The primary bathroom follows the same guiding principles as the kitchen. Vaulted ceilings and antique wide-plank flooring throughout connect the spaces. In the water closet, McKenna added paneling painted in Benjamin Moore’s Silken Blue to complement Bennison Fabrics’ showstopping Wheat Flower. To create the feeling of an old historic bedroom that had been converted into a bath, the designer included antique etched hurricanes with custom brass and mahogany backplates.
PERFECT FIT
As much as the designer wanted to fabricate a new vanity for the bath, nothing was turning out quite as well as the 18th-century chest she had found, which fit snuggly into the footprint of the room. She added a marble countertop and backsplash, along with fittings and a sink. The chest’s beautiful original finish was kept as is.

WATERED DOWN An old-fashioned copper Waterworks tub adds to the narrative that this was once a small bedroom original to the home that had been adopted as a bath over time. Placing the piece away from the wall and installing the fittings directly into the floor contributes to the authentic feel.

For designer Liz Caan’s own 1920s Georgian-style home in Boston’s Chestnut Hill, it was without question that when it came to aesthetics, her choices would be ultra-personal—inspired by the work of trusted vendors and objects collected from travels. “The powder room is a play of opposites,” says Caan, “old and new, classic and industrial.” This charming sink vignette is comprised of a Watermark faucet, Soane sconces and Antoinette Poisson wallpaper. The range is a stunning statement piece. Tell us about it. It’s a custom Le Classique style La Provençale 2100 range in the exclusive Blanc de Blancs colorway. It includes 82.5 inches of prime cooking space with two large convection ovens, 4 gas burners, a smooth griddle and a coup de feu. Polished brass trim complements the stainless-steel powder-coated base, and the surrounding cabinetry is wire-brushed oak. Share any other noteworthy elements. We always include thoughtful details in our L’Atelier kitchens. On this island, the sink’s faucet sits just below the countertop on a small ledge so when people sit at the island, they don’t have to look at sponges, dish soap or collected water. What did the homeowners request? The clients were building their forever home by the beach and asked for a fresh, clean look. A MANHATTAN DINING ROOM MAKES MAGIC OF ITS INWARD CONFINES.
On Manhattan’s Upper East Side, a classic six apartment had just one dark quality: its courtyard-facing dining room, which called for a thoughtful lighting program. Enter New York and Miami-based designer Elizabeth Bolognino, who, alongside Anderson Kenny Architecture, installed a fresh fenestration, including a matching window connecting to the kitchen to borrow its sunlight. In addition to a 12-headed Gabriel Scott chandelier (“I really wanted it to look like an anthropomorphic jewel;” she says), Bolognino commissioned decorative artist Dean Barger to paint a pale pink lacquered ceiling to mimic the surface of a calm lake. “Any time you bring in reflection, it makes a room feel bigger,” she says, adding, “Any time you can utilize light as art, you should do it.” elizabethbolognino.com

“The very essence of this project was about exploring the play of light,” shares architect William Duff of the century-old Wine Country hay barn he reconceived. Set amidst his clients’ lush vineyard and impressive modern sculpture gardens, the crisp California sun played muse to Duff’s proposed reincarnation of the outbuilding as an entertaining pavilion with a contemporary spirit. “The first time I walked the existing barn, I was struck by the way sunlight filtered through the gaps in the wood siding and thought that light, and the different ways it can illuminate
space, could be the guiding design theme for the project,” he explains. In turn, the original wood-slatted shell was maintained as a screen to splash abstract patterns across the floor by daylight. By evening, the structure then casts beams across the grounds like a glowing lantern. Joined by two new opposing glass volumes with mirrored walls, and a discreet lighting program, the project perfectly synthesizes how artificial and natural light, along with clever visual illusion, can elevate a humble structure to something extraordinary. wdarch.com

Being born and raised in Norway gave me discipline and solid artistic roots while California’s beauty inspires me to create each and every day. I am lucky to call both places home because they provide me with the best of both worlds. • Where do you draw your inspiration from? From the fallen bark of a eucalyptus tree to the patterns of a butterfly’s wings, to dew on grass, nature inspires my work and my color palette. Interior designer Barclay Butera improved the indoor-outdoor flow of a remodeled home in Irvine with new French doors from Sierra Pacific Windows leading from the living area to the rear terrace. The stone fountain was relocated from the side yard so that the sound of water could be heard from inside.
E
ven with numerous home projects, three showrooms, five books and a host of licensing agreements for everything from lighting to furniture to carpets under his belt, Barclay Butera’s enthusiasm is still palpable as he points out the favorite features in a recent remodel for an Irvine couple. “Look at the blackframed windows and doors, the crisp white walls, the nailhead detailing on the sofa, the simple chandelier,” he urges. “Everything is very clean. It’s fresh. No fuss.” After a lifetime spent in the design business, Butera continues to change it up, refining his approach to creating beautiful, livable spaces for his clients. “In the beginning of my career, blue and white was my palette,” he says. “They called me the ‘Blue Boy,’ and I’ll still bring in blues.” For this house, however, with the exception of the gray-blues in the family room, neutrals reigned, and that suited the wife, who describes herself as “not a color person,” just fine. Built in 2003, the home was originally done in a decidedly Tuscan style, and there were marble floors throughout. “It had a lot of Venetian plaster in a kind of golden hue,” the wife recalls. “After 15 years, I was just so over it.” One day, she walked into Butera’s Newport Beach showroom scouting furniture ideas for her living-dining room. Before long, she realized the whole house was overdue for an update. Butera and his team began by tweaking the shell of the house—raising the height of the arched doorways to open up the rooms and replacing all the windows and doors with black-framed openings. “It was a big surprise what an amazing change lifting the arches made,” says the wife. “It made everything seem bigger.” Downstairs, under the direction of general contractor Scott Nicholson, the marble floors were swapped with Moroccan limestone, while upstairs, hardwood was put down in place of carpet. In keeping with the theme of simplicity, Butera selected a single slab of stone for the kitchen backsplash rather than tile. “The finishes aren’t fighting with one another,” he notes. With the background set, the interior designer got to work integrating the artwork and Asian
antiques the clients had collected over the years with transitional pieces—some new, others that they’d had previously. The rectangular living and dining room—the room the wife initially wanted to redo—is now a study in elegantly understated contrasts, with one long wall accented by a textured wallpaper in beigey-brown tones that contrasts with the white walls and ceiling. “People ask me, ‘Is wallpaper in?’ ” says Butera. “And I say, ‘Wallpaper was never out in my book.’ It’s just the way I was brought up—wallpaper in every room. But using it as an accent makes a statement.” Bringing balance to the space is a pair of sculptural bronze and mahogany chandeliers— one over the dining table and the other over the living area. “I’m all about symmetry,” says Butera. In the living area, he paired tufted klismos-inspired lounge chairs with a sofa studded with nailheads. “Everything is very subtle,” Butera adds. “Instead of using fabrics with a pattern, it’s more about texture.” The upstairs landing also got a major makeover, with a new custom railing and cabinetry accented with French hardware and mirrored doors trimmed in a chinoiserie design. “Again, there’s that attention to detail,” says Butera. “But you’ll see there’s no crown molding. It’s very clean.” Outside, Butera’s team worked with landscape installer Ramiro Rodriguez of Luxe Environment to bring consistency to the mature plants and trees and to move the existing stone fountain from the side yard to the rear of the house. Asian sculptures join an outdoor dining table and chairs, and on the terrace, lounge chairs make for cozy gatherings around a fireplace on cool evenings. Surveying the completed house, Butera pronounces it “timeless,” adding, “This will not look dated 20 years from now. Three years ago, I redid my Newport Beach house. I wanted it to be more of a peaceful retreat. It’s about living with less, but the things that we do put in a home are very special. Everything has a story.” The couple say they couldn’t be happier that they took the plunge and decided to redo the whole house. Says the wife with a laugh, “When I look back, I think, ‘Why did I only want to do one room?’ ”

o arrive at Paul and Audrey Hanneman’s West Hollywood home is to visit the South of France. A tall ficus hedge shields the house from the street, and when stepping through its front gate—gravel crunching underfoot—rather than the hum of nearby Melrose Avenue, there’s birdsong and the burble of an aged stone fountain. It’s a cinematic welcome envisioned largely by Paul, a retired film executive and admitted Francophile, who first fell for le Midi when he saw To Catch a Thief. “I love the people, the language, the food and wine, the Louis XVI furniture and the architecture,” he says. And the home, named Maison Lumière, is the embodiment of all he admires. From Èze to Draguignan, Paul and Audrey have vacationed often in the region, enjoying summertime brocantes and alfresco dining at local bistros. Distilling those memories into a visual wonderland befitting an L.A. neighborhood provided a sensory-driven design brief that captured architect Paul Williger’s imagination. “I welcomed the adventure,” Williger says. “You don’t see a lot of Provençal style here, even though the vernacular is appropriate to the Southern California climate.” Working with general contractors Jim Hanley and Megan Turner, Williger crafted an authentic-feeling home, right down to operable wooden shutters, but kept it “cleaner, fresher—like we were updating an old apartment in Paris,” he explains. “The original home was compressed, so adding a second story allowed us to open up to the yard.” To that end, the front door was glazed, ground-floor walls were replaced with bay windows and French doors, and the upstairs bedrooms were given balconies. “It’s an oasis,” adds Hanley, noting that plenty of house can be realized on a small lot, “if it’s laid out well.” (This home is just about 2,800 square feet.) “It’s also about quality,” he says. For example, the team tested many finishes to achieve the perfect hue and traditional smooth finish of Provençal stucco, and great effort was made to source and match wood flooring and roof tiles to the ones the Hannemans had already found in France. Paul, who is studying for his Master of Interior Architecture degree at UCLA, observes that French
design is like French fashion: “It looks effortless yet is clearly considered.” The home’s interiors, realized by the couple’s longtime designer Elizabeth Dinkel, bear out this truism. “They represent the culling of many years of collecting— basically our favorite things—pulled together with the help of Lizzie’s amazing eye,” says Paul. He points to objects like the Neoclassical side tables in the family room found at Le Marché aux Puces de Paris Saint-Ouen. Starting with a neutral backdrop to support the couple’s art collection, she began layering in playful pieces such as the Vladimir Kagan sofa—the first piece the couple bought for the project—in the living room. “They liked the contrast with the antiques,” the designer notes. Elsewhere, Dinkel combined a bench covered in leopard-print silk velvet and the Lucite lamps by Pierre Cardin. In the dining room, she surrounded a contemporary steel table with the couple’s Louis XVI-style chairs, adding café curtains that billow in the breeze. “Our intention was to flood the room with light while still providing a bit of privacy,” she says. “We wanted to highlight the style of the windows and the decorative window hardware without obstructing it.” And in the Hannemans’ bedroom are a Piero Lissoni platform bed and Murano glass lamps. “I love the mix of periods,” she says, equating the home’s style to the decadently blasé vibe of St. Tropez’s famed Club 55. But it’s the exterior spaces, inspired in part by the legendary designer François Catroux’s gardens at Les Ramades and conceived with another longtime Hanneman collaborator, landscape designer Nikila Rigby Ellis, that perhaps feels the most Provençallike. “Large trees make a garden feel bigger,” notes Ellis. She placed a pair of fruitless olive trees in the front yard and added cypress for color and verticality, boxwoods as sculptural elements and jasmine and citrus for fragrance. Because the property is small, Ellis employed another clever trick: utilizing crushed limestone for the hardscape. “By not defining a driveway and walkways, it gives a more expansive feel.” The result is a garden that “lends itself to hospitality,” she says. Whether the Hannemans are hosting friends or family or just enjoying the house à deux, they are assured enchantment. “There’s a magical quality of light and peace here,” says Paul. “It’s the indoor-outdoor ease of life that we so love.”

STRONGER TOGETHER For a Los Angeles-area sculptor and fiber artist, inspiration comes in collaboration and solace in solo work. W R I T T E N B Y L A U R I E P E R R Y | P H O T O G R A P H Y BY A M Y D I C K E R S O N

os Angeles-based artist Cindy Hsu Zell nimbly moves from medium to medium and from solo pursuits to more collaborative endeavors. The media she explores range from the rope she spins herself for sensuous wall hangings to the alabaster and maple she carves for tabletop sculptures and wall reliefs. As for collaboration, she often works with ceramist Alyson Iwamoto, who creates the stoneware elements that hold Zell’s handmade loops and tassels. Zell, who made the move into full-time fine art-making last year, finds that switching mediums lets her spread out the sheer physical labor of what she does. “Woodworking tools are heavy; wood is heavy. Using an angle grinder is physically tough,” she explains. She works outdoors carving wood, “which is hard on my back and hands,” then goes inside and spins rope, which involves walking back and forth. “When I’m ready to sit down for a while, I sand wood and stone,” the artist says. However, whatever material she works with, she considers one aspect absolutely critical: using fewer of the world’s resources. “I try my best to make things well so they last,” she says, adding, “it’s not possible for me to create in a fully sustainable way, so I source my materials responsibly and try to use and waste as little as possible.” In practice, this means she finds her stone at a local supplier whose values align with hers, and the spalted maple she uses is from the West Coast. When it comes to her art, she will make small pieces from the remnants of larger ones. For example, short tassels crafted from threads clipped from longer works. And she’s constantly thinking about other ways to make her practice more sustainable, going as far as saving sawdust for possible future explorations. Another new project—and collaboration—is In Various Forms, a gallery she and fellow artist Kalla McGuire recently opened in Long Beach. With a goal of discovering and nourishing newer voices, they are commissioning three to five pieces from an initial group of 10 artists, encouraging them to take on bigger projects— ones that they might not have tackled without gallery backing. “I am looking forward to the opportunity to work with other artists and for the gallery to support a community of artists who can support each other, play off each other and encourage experimentation,” Zell says.

A design team’s allied vision yields a wonderfully unexpected Palm Springs oasis.

ou can tell a lot about a home by its hedges—especially in the historic neighborhood of Old Las Palmas, where manicured foliage has shielded Hollywood’s elite and their architectural treasures since its establishment in the 1920s. For this particular home, a steel-framed cuboid passageway tucked within the ficus is the first indication that there are more than a few surprises in store. The house’s moniker, Casa de las Ardillas or “Squirrel House,” named for an inside joke between the homeowner and a nephew, is the second indication. He had set his sights on this Palm Springs getaway—a decrepit 1958 bungalow on “the prettiest lot in the desert,” according to his friend Christian Damerow, who took the lead on the interiors. Damerow, upon finding the listing, had instructed him to book a viewing and step on it. “I have the great fortune of having very talented friends,” notes the homeowner, who soon called on James A. Lord and Roderick Wyllie, landscape architects and his former landlords. Joined by architect Mark W. Daniels and general contractor Chris Neil, the team began reconceiving the dated abode to meet the moment while simultaneously honoring the best of its history. Fundamentally, the structure begged for a stronger dialogue with its setting. “From the lot, you really feel the mountains, but the old house didn’t relate to that,” explains Daniels. “The goal on everybody’s end was to establish an indooroutdoor connection.” Preserving the modesty of the original footprint, the home was taken down to the studs, its flow reimagined, and ample glazing installed. Glass expanses were placed throughout, framing landscape views and garden vignettes. Meanwhile, the retractable sliders on either side of the living room morph the space into a breezeway connecting the front yard to the back. While Daniels’ fresh shell speaks a modern language, Neil and his master tradesmen took great care in rehabilitating midcentury hero features, namely, the concrete floors and stoneclad fireplaces—cleaning, polishing, patching in, and even recentering for optimum placement within the new context. For instance, “the design in the den meant framing the fireplace between the windows, so we removed and salvaged that stone and rebuilt the face,” says Neil.

That original hearth stonework in the main bedroom played muse to Damerow’s peaceful parfait of pebbles, sands and creams. “The palette was always going to be muted and simple,” he says. “We wanted to make sure there was no competition with the light and landscaping; those elements and the art provided our pops of color.” Playing to his client’s affinity for clean lines and comfort, Damerow leaned into simple silhouettes and cozy fabrics like shearling and bouclé, whose softness contrasts with the architecture. “ ‘Sexy ranch’ and ‘Palm Springs by way of Marfa’ are what we wanted to do as far as the shorthand,” he adds. The elemental feel of the interior extends to the landscape’s procession of outdoor rooms, from the fire pit surrounded by succulents and billowing grasses to the “dining orchard” tucked amidst an olive grove. “A desert Zen approach didn’t feel like enough—we wanted a garden with color and fragrance that felt sensual,” says Wyllie. He delighted in taking the homeowner shopping at “these crazy desert nurseries,” tweaking plans to accommodate a fig tree, flowering abutilon and a medley of sculptural succulents as inspiration—or in some cases, love—struck. “Shopping for cactuses is like adopting a dog at the ASPCA,” jokes Wyllie. “You decide which ones speak to you.” Those hand-selected cacti now form the backdrop of a dramatic infinity pool edged in black granite. “The pool was envisioned as a landscape within a landscape,” notes Lord. “The idea was to create a mirror into the soul of Palm Springs.” In a pleasing surprise to both the client and design team, the effect of the dark pool is the same as that of the double-glazed glass wrapping the home, both of which reflect the scenery like an art installation, or in certain exposures, a mirage. Eight months of the year, Casa de las Ardillas’ doors and windows are left open, welcoming in the seasons. But October mornings are particularly lovely. At dawn, the homeowner can be found drinking his coffee on the patio, the clouds of blooming muhly grass echoing the glow behind the San Jacinto mountains, casting everything in a blush veil. The scene bears an uncanny resemblance to an inspiration image Wyllie and Lord presented to their client at the start of their conversations: a vintage postcard of a smiling cowboy in a pink desert.
