ZOOM LAND!
Back in June, I was moderating a Zoom meeting when my husband popped into my office to announce that we had a buyer for our house. “We need to look at this new place, pronto!” Lickety-split, we were moving out of the home we have lived in for nearly a decade and into a fab new rental further east and across from the beach. With all this taking place in the midst of Covid, my head was swirling. Like so many, our home has become a safe haven; nearly every hour of every day spent under that roof. As I write this note, it’s day three in our new place and I’m back to Zooming away. Yes, I had that moment of, “Yikes, what have we done?” But, more than ever, I am grateful to have a new home to settle into. I hope that this September/October issue brings you inspiration for your own home and a respite from what’s happening in the world.

ow more than ever, we’re contemplating what comforts bring joy to a home. To that end, designers are all about elements that create tranquility and contentment in private spaces, and found that it’s the simple things—cozy outdoor areas, the feel of soft linens and the play of light on a wall—that truly create happiness. For Brooke and Steve Giannetti, a designer and architect, pleasure can be found in the fresh air. “Connections to the garden are at the heart and soul of what we do,” says Steve. The husband-andwife team lives on a farm in Southern California where they’ve perfected the art of indoor-outdoor living. Their secret lies in making the great outdoors more intimate. “The feeling of being in an open meadow is sometimes not the most relaxing,” explains Steve. “We found that if you can break an alfresco space into loosely defined rooms—using features like a wall, a garden border or a tree—it makes a space feel more inviting and protected.” Their farm is full of examples, such as a seating arrangement placed under the canopy of a heritage oak, a fire pit ringed by a sectional or a table located by a vegetable garden. “Being outside is something we crave all year round,” Brooke says. “Living in nature calms us and brings us into the moment. It is perhaps the best luxury.” In Atlanta, designer Erika Hollinshead Ward finds luxury where the day begins and ends. “Having a bed that’s made with good linens is a treat,” she says. “You may not be able to control what happens in the world, but sleeping with beautiful linens is a joy.” Ward favors bamboo sheets for their sustainability and hand, noting the fabric becomes even softer with washing, and for curtains, she turns to cotton linen. “The weave of a crisp linen makes a great canvas for color and pattern,” she says. “To me, drapery is like art on the wall—and it can elevate and finish a space the same way a good blazer makes an outfit.” Brad Ford, a New York City designer, calls natural light “very healing” and seeks to add as much of it as possible to any dwelling, be it a city apartment or a house in the country. “In a dense metropolis, privacy can be an issue, so we like to add solar shades or sheers on windows,” he says. “These allow you privacy but also an amount of light.” Ford is also known for strategically placing mirrors and furniture with reflective surfaces in a room to amplify the light. When designing a new home, he always advocates for as many windows as possible. “I would live in a glass house if I could,” he says. “I believe there is no better mood enhancer than natural light.” For these design professionals, providing easy indulgences is rewarding. “Many of my clients come home exhausted after a long day,” Ward says. “If I can give them a space that’s tailored to them, and that provides comfort, I am also fulfilled.”

Eve Ashcraft knows a good palette. A formally trained painter, she earned her stripes as a color specialist for Martha Stewart and today touts an elite moniker—architectural color consultant— lending her expertise to residential homes, cultural institutions, public works projects and corporate branding the world over. Luxe called upon Ashcraft to learn more of her vibrant and innate approach. eveashcraft.com Formative influence. My mother was a painter. We had a yellow living room with fuchsia silk pillows. I would come home from school and she’d say, ‘Grab a brush’—she’d be painting the kitchen cabinets, again. It never occurred to me until I started working with clients that anyone would be afraid of color. Less is best. Fan decks are an instrument of torture. I’ve had clients test 30 colors before calling me. They were probably feeling insecure to begin with, and there’s this internet problem of, ‘I’ll just scroll to the next page and oops, it’s 4 a.m.’ Endless choice can have a negative effect, so I edit and distill my ideas before sharing.
Go-to paint trick. When I want a space to feel calm, one easy tip is to reduce contrast, especially between building components, like the trim, walls and ceiling. Make those elements the same or almost the same color and boundaries will disappear, creating a sense of spaciousness. Golden rule. The more color you have, the more color you can use. It’s like a great party—just jam everyone in there.

Artist’s intuition. The only thing I love about getting older is that I’ve developed respect for my instincts. There are moments when I walk into a room and just know. I had clients with this tasteful blue parlor, but there was something sad about it. I said, ‘You’re going to kill me, but this room should be tobacco with cream trim.’ Six months later, I received a love letter about how they never leave it now. That kind of transformation is luxury.

Raymond Barberousse’s path from architect to lighting designer is a telling reminder that good things can result from trying times. Shortly after buying a house in 2009, he was laid off from a Chicago architecture firm, leaving him to D.I.Y. much of his home’s furnishings. His sculptural lighting designs caught the eye of an owner of a local decor store, and the rest is history. Today, Barberousse and his wife split their time between Chicago and Miami drawing inspiration from both locales. “Chicago is energetic; Miami is more laid-back,” says the designer. As a member of the Black Artists + Designers Guild, he is an advocate for promoting inclusivity in the design community, but ultimately, he says, “It’s about the work. I want the work to represent itself.”

“Don’t underestimate me,” says Denise McKenzie-Lee, known for her earthy ceramics layered with texture. Her foray into the medium began with a gift certificate to a pottery class. “I love entertaining, so I wanted to make my own set of dishes,” she recalls. “The instructor said, ‘It’s going to be a long time before you can do that.’ It wasn’t. I’m prolific when I become interested in something.” Her pieces, crafted with porcelain and stoneware, are perfectly imperfect reflecting a gritty sentiment. “I call it rustic modern. I’m attracted to textures: a rusty tray, rocks, rough edges, things that look burnt,” she says. Next up: experimenting with glass and non-functional work. No one is underestimating her now.

ASP & Company, Los Angeles Anika Poitier’s first love was film. Yet with a child on the way, she says, “I needed a creative outlet that was more kid-friendly.” So Poitier teamed up with her interior designer mother on a textile and accessories line. Their first collection centered on female artists and grew from there. A signature design is an infinity-style serpent. “It symbolizes strength and the journey to empowerment,” says the designer, who employs her filmmaker eye when selecting materials, and is drawn to linen for its transparent and natural qualities. “I love the way light shines through. We all want to exist in a calm, nurturing space.” Today, that notion rings more true than ever.

This month, the storied American textile brand tapped Manhattan-based artist and fi lmmaker Sarah Morris to create Midtown and Hellion Equilibrium for its latest addition to the collection. maharam.com Describe your work. Retinal after images of our environment. In other words, when I’m looking at something and then close my eyes for a second, I explore how the structure of what I just saw carries forth.
Were there any surprises in working with this medium? I have a hang-up with getting color exactly as I see it in my mind. Even in a digital world with technology, it still took a lot of will to see a very specific desire become a reality.
In what way does living in New York inspire your work? My first studio was near Times Square and all the corporate buildings along Sixth Avenue. I’ve always been interested in the mainstream, but I didn’t feel aligned with Midtown at all, so my work is very much to claim that zone as mine. When I say retinal, I use such architecture as a strategy for seduction.
What makes this project different from past works? The sense that these pieces are going to enter more environments is exciting. People’s homes are quite personal, and everyone has very specific ideas on how they want to use their space. It’s interesting that people can play around with these works.

Brooklyn textile brand Eskayel is doubling its Williamsburg studio and showroom (75 S. 6th St.) to 1,800 square feet with an additional floor, where they’ll debut the Salentu rug collection to coincide with the October launch of the new space.

How has Nate Berkus Associates evolved over the last 25 years? My aesthetic has always been informed by travel, and the older I’ve become the more things I’ve seen. I’m the guy who goes on vacation and photographs the floor of every cathedral in Europe. What’s the inspiration behind your latest collection for the Shade Store? It's very Mediterranean, with painterly freehanded patterns and a warm neutral palette. Heritage Greek motifs were the starting point and then we brought them to life in a modern way. We wanted to do something that felt fresh but universal and easy to layer. He’s already famous, but interior designer Nate Berkus never rests on his laurels. Luxe caught up with the telegenic talent to talk about the growth and success of Nate Berkus Associates, his fall collection for Port Chester-based The Shade Store, and what made him decide to move back to New York City.
Why the return from Los Angeles? My husband and I want our children to grow up in a place that’s a little more worldly than what Los Angeles had to offer. And we wanted to feel like we're really part of a neighborhood. We also have a deep admiration for the way people in New York City live with such spontaneity.

But its Lebanese founder, Nour al Nimer, recently moved to New York City and brought her wares with her. “If you begin at no, you’ll never get to yes.” Words Nancy Epstein has lived and worked by since designing her first piece of furniture more than 20 years ago. “I brought the design to our hometown cabinetmaker and he didn’t like it. I didn’t listen and had him make it anyway, and he was so taken by the results that he asked me to join his company designing products.” Such tenacity eventually led Epstein to found Artistic Tile, where she and her team aim to “make the world a better place … one tile at a time.” Today, her tile empire encompasses eight national showrooms, a cadre of reps working with hundreds of architects, designers and dealers, an engaging website, and 100,000 social media followers. “We are very ‘connected’ to our audience and their preferences, well beyond sales numbers,” she says.

MATERIAL MIX: WHAT’S TRENDING IN TILE + Brecciated marble slab. This is an iconic material for Artistic Tile; one Epstein loves so much, she permanently installs it in every new showroom. So, it comes as no surprise that blending the kitchen and family room into one great room layout is high on most clients’ wish lists. Today, designers are planning adaptable spaces ideal for prepping meals, breaking bread and intimate socializing, as seen in this stunning project by designer Adam Hunter.

For designer Adam Hunter, this impressive space started as a dream. “I had a vision of an all-metal kitchen in a beautiful patina with a floating marble hood,” he explains. With the help of all-star architect Steve Giannetti, trusting clients and an ace custom cabinetry company, Hunter was lucky enough to see his fantasy come to life. adamhunterinc.com What a room! I wanted to change up my own aesthetic with this project and I certainly reached high. But it really started with doing something unique, which was creating an all-metal kitchen.
How did you decide on the marble hood? We actually had to frame the house so it could support the hood, but I knew we had to go for it! The marble, which my dealers call a pinot noir, has moments of eggplant, burgundy and just the right kind of gold. When it all gleams together at a certain point in the day, it’s magic.

Talk to us about the cabinetry. Amuneal created some really luxurious textures and colors with stainless steel designs. We sort of invented a patina we’re calling “root beer.” It works so well with some of the other tones and materials found throughout the space. The glass cases flanking the range continue the view out to the backyard—they’re definitely a favorite feature.

To create a soaring space in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, designer Amber Brown Matlack of Brown Interiors knew she wanted to preserve the charm and history of the original 1935 Tudor-style residence when crafting this great room. After combining what was once a galley kitchen, small breakfast nook and dining room into a central area, she extended the ceiling into the attic to achieve a vaulted effect and expose the wooden beam. The warm color scheme evokes a nostalgic feel, including the mauve and gray tones on the cabinetry and a beautiful stone backsplash. Brown Matlack says she aimed for “a sense of openness and livability in the heartbeat of the house.” browninteriors.net

Sweet 1ESCAPE A BRIDGEHAMPTON SPORTS BARN OFFERS THE ULTIMATE FAMILY RETREAT.
“With a remote property, you have the opportunity to create a destination,” says Kevin Clark, principal of Historical Concepts. And so it came to be that a family’s brief for a recreational outbuilding on their Bridgehampton estate evolved into a sports barn laden with wellness features. Surrounded by acres of pristine farmland, the structure demanded a sensitive approach, one that Historical Concepts—an architecture firm known for legacy properties rooted in place— was well-suited for. Alongside interior designer Steven Gambrel, landscape architect Edmund Hollander and master builder Michael Davis, who assembled the team, plans were drawn for a lowslung, cedar-clad activity center softly folded into the rolling terrain. The decision to nestle the barn into, not onto, the landscape is an exercise in both historical accuracy and ingenuity. First, it references semisubterranean potato barns local to the region. Second, it meets a Hamptons building code limiting accessory structures to 20 feet high, while still allowing for a three-story structure for all the family’s amenity wishes to live in harmony. In full, the sprawling retreat includes family offices, a large vaulted great room, a kitchen, an indoor lap pool and spa, men’s and women’s locker rooms and an exercise room—plus a sunken tennis court with viewing pavilion. “The lay of the land and the feel of a place reveal themselves when you put pen to paper,” says Clark. “The top floor gym has a wonderful

view over the property, and the sauna, steam and massage rooms round out the indoor activities,” shares Davis. “In addition to the gathering room, there is a suite of three family offices particularly helpful during these times.” Throughout, Gambrel’s interiors scheme—a medley of warm woods and chalky blue, green and sand hues—sets a restorative tone. “The palette is muted, based on the environment as inspiration,” he explains, and indeed, the natural setting inspires. Complementing the agrarian landscape, Hollander took care in employing native plantings, such as bayberry, winterberry and viburnum, to welcome birds, bees and other pollinators. “Healthy, living landscapes are essential to the wellness of all visitors, all species,” he notes. Like many affluent New Yorkers, the family decamped to their country residence in the early days of the pandemic. In turn, the beloved barn has become a haven beyond anything client or design team could have planned for—a hub of safety, togetherness and health. “One of the most rewarding parts of our job is when you see a place you designed be truly life-altering for a family,” says Clark, adding, “When you treat home as resort, there’s something magical about that.”

Houston, Texas One way of fostering well-being at home that I believe in and have used with great results is Vastu Shastra, an Indian system of architecture similar to feng shui. In Vastu Shastra, there are 5 elements: Earth (Bhumi), Water (Jala), Air (Vayu), Fire (Agni), and Space (Akasha). The central part of a house is ruled by the space element. As all directions meet in the center, it is the holiest and most powerful zone. So when possible, I like to ensure that the most-used room—often the living area—is located in the direct center and designed with a minimal aesthetic for less clutter and low furniture to allow for plenty of natural light. LOST in REVERIE
There are serene rooms and then there are rooms where serenity seems to emanate from the walls, softening your disposition on viewing. This elixir of a bedroom in Jackson Hole, Wyoming—a collaboration between WRJ Design and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson—is decidedly the latter. Here, designer Rush Jenkins and architect Ray Calabro sound off on achieving Zen in tandem. wrjdesign.com; bcj.com Set the scene. RC: The site for the house is on a butte that overlooks the Snake River Valley with extraordinary views. The bedroom is located at the southern, most private end of the home and is embedded into the gentle slope of the site, connecting with the landscape at a more immediate scale. RJ: There’s a calmness and a majestic beauty that surrounds you. That’s what the color palette, the lighting, the simplicity of the design were about—creating harmony with nature. Material connection. RC: The southern wall is smooth-formed cast-in-place concrete, the flooring is white oak with a custom finish, the window wall is aluminum with a clear anodized finish, and the ceiling is composed of panels of white oak. RJ: The rug is bamboo silk, the bed is really luxurious suede, the pillows are a cashmere plaid from Loro Piana. Those tonal elements are about continuity with the exteriors and the architecture. Design highlights. RC: The water feature that stretches along the master suite is dynamic. We placed mirror-finish stainless steel panels on the roof overhang above the stream. The combination of gently moving water and mirror reflects constantly changing patterns of light into the master suite throughout the day. The effect is magical. RJ: The seamless windows in this room actually open from the bottom. Can you imagine waking up hearing the water rippling and the birds chirping in the garden? Sometimes, you’ll see a moose having a drink. You don’t get closer to nature than that. Dream team. RC: WRJ’s selections reinforce the quiet elegance of the home. The luxe finishes and fabrics express their commitment to quality and attention to detail that are guiding principles in the architecture. RJ: This house was a unified vision. The client wanted peace and simplicity, and every team member came at this design from the same philosophy.

With more and more companies adopting permanently flexible policies, it’s no surprise that designers are seeing an uptick in office updates. On deck? From the very beginning, it was meant to be a place of rest. The architect picked the location for it’s amazing natural light and we worked with a feng shui master. Building started in September to encourage good luck and prosperity for the home. It was a special brief in that way—there was meaning behind every detail. We’re seeing more and more clients asking for specialty rooms, but these clients—two firstgeneration Chinese sisters—really use this space. After a hard day’s work, they retreat to drink tea together, practice calligraphy and meditate. They wanted to honor their heritage—but to modernize, too. Tea room window treatments are traditionally bamboo; we chose a light grass Conrad shade. The Chilewich rug is textured like a tatami mat and the white-oak furnishings are custom by Chi Wing Lo, a Chinese furniture designer living in Italy. The table has natural stone for water draining and a metal plate for the hot teapot to rest on. In spring, the sisters drink Longjing tea. In summer, jasmine tea paired with red bean pastry. In autumn, black tea with moon cake and in winter, Pu’er tea. They have an incredible collection of ceramic vessels; their most-prized is a Gongfu tea set from Yingge, a town famous for its production of porcelain. It was an inspiring project in that we learned so much from our clients. It also showed us how important it is to have a room dedicated to feeling good in—to feeling happy. Arencibia: I majored in art and architectural history, as well as formally studied fine arts. Combined, this inspired me to join a field that blends design and hands-on craftsmanship.
SILVERLINING, INC. The notable projects in SilverLining, Inc.’s portfolio tell the story of the company’s growth since its founding in 1987. In 1992, the builder successfully completed a Fifth Avenue home that demanded a gut renovation with a time constraint of only four summer months. In 2008, SilverLining, Inc. began the remodel of a penthouse at 150 Nassau Street that featured an 80-foot slide and a full climbing wall. Soon, the team expanded out from the boroughs, completing a Katonah residence in 2012 and one in Sagaponack in 2017. Through these endeavors, SilverLining, Inc. established its ability to meet tight deadlines, showcased creative techniques and resources, and proved an understanding of city and country living alike. And the firm is far from done. Led by Josh Wiener and Joel Arencibia, SilverLining, Inc. will become a PHIUS-certified builder this year and has several exciting projects in the works, spanning from Manhattan to Westchester County and Connecticut. Throughout them all, one constant is sure to hold true: no matter the challenge, SilverLining, Inc. will rise to the occasion. It’s no wonder so many clients come back for more.

What do you feel characterizes your work? We are known for a high level of execution regardless of the design style or size of the project. We firmly believe our responsibility is to bring the client and their design team’s vision to life using the highest level of craftsmanship to make sure the work lasts a lifetime. Up to this point, what do you feel has been your greatest success and why? Growing to a firm of more than 250 employees with four in-house trades, while continually tuning our management and building practices, took dedication and devotion. This has led to repeat business, and nothing brings us more pride than that.

DIANE PAPARO ASSOCIATES Diane Paparo’s career proves the power of versatility and evolution. The interior designer, who today owns her namesake firm, Diane Paparo Associates, began her career in collaboration with a commercial architectural company in 1975. In 1982, she opened the doors to her own business, through which she has created commercial and residential masterpieces alike. To successfully do what one loves for such a length of time, in a market as competitive as New York City—though she takes on projects elsewhere too—is truly an accomplishment. And for Paparo, it’s a joy. Employing what she calls “a practical streak” and her background in fine arts, the designer has earned a reputation for inventive, outside-the-box spaces that are still livable. But above all else, her approach is about the client and location. “Our repeat customers rely on me to give them direction from the get-go,” she says. “Meanwhile, new ones are bursting with ideas that need refining and curating. Either way, I hope to finish each project with the sort of feedback one client recently gave me: ‘You center me.’” Indeed, Paparo strives to get at the heart of a person and how their life can be enhanced by home. “What works for one client or site does not work for others, and we are particularly sensitive to this.”

What’s next for the firm? We just began a project with a developer, who bought the Lee Tire factory complex in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. We are beginning the design process for turning it into a multipurpose complex with full amenities.

Alexa Hampton took over ownership and design leadership of Mark Hampton in 1998 and has designed a growing stable of home products for brands including Kravet, Theodore Alexander, Stark Carpet, Visual Comfort & Co., Chesneys, SA Baxter, White River, The Shade Store and Globus Cork. She serves on the board of trustees for the New York School of Interior Design, The New York Landmarks Conservancy and the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art. James Magni has been recognized as one of the foremost modernist designers of our time, leaving an indelible mark on the world of architecture and interior design. In 1988, he established Los Angeles-based Magni Design, and in 1996, created the Magni Home Collection, which showcases lighting, rugs and furniture of his design. James has developed a style that marries sumptuous luxury with modernism’s clean lines and uncluttered spaces. His passion for fine art has made him a favorite amongst major collectors, museum directors and trustees, though he is equally sought after by innovators and entrepreneurs in many fields.
Lori Weitzner is internationally known for her contributions to the world of textiles and wallcoverings under the Weitzner Limited brand, as well as for her rug designs for Perennials and West Elm and passementerie for Samuel & Sons. Her work is in the permanent collections of museums such as the Cooper Hewitt in New York and Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Lori is the recipient of more than 25 prestigious design awards. She recently authored her first book—Ode to Color, The Ten Essential Palettes for Living and Design— published by Harper Collins, and lectures around the world on the effects of color on our well-being.
A native New Yorker, Pamela Jaccarino is the founding editor in chief of Luxe Interiors + Design, the largest residential architecture and design brand in the country, a position she has held since 2005. Pamela has been instrumental in the growth of the brand and continues to champion its fresh vision and evolution. She also frequently lectures on design-related topics. Prior to joining Sandow in 2002, Pamela was an executive editor with the LVMH Group.

Drawing inspiration from English garden rooms, the grounds of this Wakefield, Rhode Island, residence were divided into an entry court, a terrace with fire feature, a woodland garden, a dining terrace, a formal garden, two fencing pavilions and a sweeping lawn. Outside of a Dallas domicile, the precise, modern lines of site walls, water features and retaining walls are all softened by the calculated addition of large trees and textural plantings.

ot 60 miles from Manhattan, Weston, Connecticut, remains a bastion of colonial New England, retaining both its romanticized rural qualities and strong sense of community. That’s largely what drew homeowners David and Kat McConnaughey to its winding roads, softly rolling hills, thick stands of trees and ultimately, to a 1928 cottage poised on a pristine riverbank. Former New York City dwellers who have traversed global points near and far, the couple found themselves uncharacteristically besotted with the setting, which they considered a naturalist’s dream. “We loved the idea of meditating by the river, watching the sunset and the wildlife go to sleep,” says Kat.

With such beautiful surroundings, the couple’s designer, Heide Hendricks, was tasked with enhancing, not upstaging them. “I was instructed not to block any windows,” reveals Hendricks, whose mandate was to create cozy, serene and textured spaces that would pay tribute to the rich tapestry of her clients’ lives. Kat, a native Texan and a former flight attendant, “had the most amazing stories about traveling the world,” Hendricks notes. “She wanted to create a home that was finally representative of not only her own life, but her life with David.” Known for lived-in interiors with a narrative quality, Hendricks was delighted to inventory the McConnaugheys most cherished items and give them pride of place at last.
The den’s chambray sectional by RH joins a vintage Hans Wegner rocker and a pair of Blu Dot Hecks ottomans to form a cozy seating spot for reading or watching TV. Presiding over built-ins by architect Jacob Albert, a print by Bryan Nash Gill creates a compelling sight line between Thomas O’Brien’s Reed sconces for Circa Lighting. The high-gloss ceiling (Farrow & Ball’s Cornforth White) was meant to mimic the watery surrounds.

In the sun room, a Lillian August settee, paired with pillows in Morris & Co., Jim Thompson and Kirsten Hecktermann textiles, sidles up to a jaunty coffee table ottoman from Hammertown Barn Country Store in Pine Plains. Between a pair of petite RH club chairs rests a set of kidneyshaped midcentury walnut nesting tables from 1stdibs. A few months before finding and falling in love with Hendricks’ portfolio, the homeowners had tapped an architect they already knew and trusted, Jacob Albert of Boston, to renovate the residence. “The McConnaugheys wanted to enhance the way spaces related to each other. They hoped to maintain the charm that was already there, but to improve upon it,” explains Albert, who collaborated with firm associate Craig Gibson on the project. That goal was met in large part by his decision to designate a proper central entrance to the exterior. “It made the way you move through the house fall logically into place,” he notes. In the end, renovations touched every room, says Albert—though it doesn’t appear that way. “Everything looks like it belongs.” Remaining far afield during the renovation was hardly an issue, partly because Kat had tracked down the precise general contractor who spearheaded the home’s renovation for its previous owners. Already familiar with its bones, Russ Allik was able to execute Albert’s concepts flawlessly. “Russ excelled so much at the details that we rarely needed to be on site,” the architect notes. By the time Hendricks arrived for the decorative layer, she had similarly earned the homeowners’ confidence. “David and I have strong opinions, but we trusted Heide implicitly,” reveals Kat. “At times, I asked her to take our requests out of the equation because I knew she understood us that much.”

Between the kitchen and living room, Hendricks endeavored to “carve out a formal dining area within an open-concept space.” Here, vintage Hans Wegner chairs surround a cast-iron trestle table base topped with a live-edge walnut slab—a piece custom-fabricated by Get Back, Inc. Hendricks had the chandelier assembled from naturally shed elk antlers gathered by Montana Boy Scouts.

Since celebrating the outdoors was imperative, one of Hendricks’ first moves was to designate a window-clad corner of the sun room as a breakfast nook. “David liked to eat at the kitchen island, but it wasn’t very comfortable,” the designer notes. “I saw a great opportunity. Now, they have their coffee here every morning.” Another moment of ingenuity is seen on the basement level, where Albert had converted a former root cellar into a convivial bar accessed via Dutch door. There, Hendricks followed suit with a coat of red brick lacquer. With David less keen on a constant color jolt than Kat, Hendricks adds, “all they need to do is close it.” Curios from the couple’s travels proved key here and throughout. “Having a cache of mementos was inspiring and quite useful,” says Hendricks, who achieved harmony by balancing the couple’s treasured keepsakes with fresh acquisitions touting unique or soulful qualities. “Nothing made the cut unless it had significance for Kat or David,” the designer assures.
Hendricks happily reconceived family heirlooms, too: a black hutch in the dining room, which once belonged to David’s mother, displays his inherited antique silver, along with Kat’s milk glass and ironstone. A 1950s pink patio set, also from David’s mother, was repainted white and installed beneath Albert’s elegant design for the back patio. And a bobbin bench in the mudroom is topped with pillows fashioned from remnants of her late mother’s jeans. Incorporating his collection of vintage duck decoys was a must for David, whom Hendricks describes as the consummate outdoorsman. Her expertise found these characterful objets d’art homes within Albert’s built-in bookshelves, where they now converse with tomes, natural artifacts and other nods to the couple’s passions. “Jacob and Heide showed us how to live in and really captured the essence of what our experience at home should be,” Kat concludes. For the first time, “there’s nothing missing.”
Opposite the den is a stylish bar Albert converted from a former root cellar. “The bar needed to be special,” says Hendricks, who painted its beadboard walls and Dutch door interior with Bookroom Red by Farrow & Ball. An antique Biedermeier occasional table holds center court surrounded by antique Chinese chairs from Montage Antiques and a re-covered midcentury Jens Risom bench.

he Tribeca loft is part of New York architectural lore, its mere mention evoking images of vast spaces with a raw, industrial aesthetic. But while synonymous with downtown luxury, such archetypical settings aren’t exactly cozy—or family friendly. And that’s precisely what a client wanted for her new condo in the Juilliard Building: a warm and intimate family home with well-articulated rooms. “That big, open loft was kind of trendy 10 or 15 years ago,” says designer Paris Forino, a New Yorker by way of Sydney. “But now people want human-scale rooms. And with COVID-19 and more people working from home, I think that’s becoming even more relevant.” Alongside the architectural duo of Elizabeth “Lily” Rutherfurd and Bruce Kinlin and general contractor Evangelos Antoniades, Forino set about conceiving an entirely new floor plan to suit her client’s wishes. The extensive undertaking entailed the addition of a guest bedroom, a guest bathroom and a library off the foyer, as well as relocating the kitchen—which was formerly sited in the dark central core of the residence—to the building’s
front façade, where a built-in breakfast nook now fills a sunlit corner. “We wanted the kitchen to be flooded with light; to become the heart of the home,” Rutherfurd shares. To distinguish each room while maintaining a spacious feel, the design team relied on airy portals to link its disparate areas. A wide case opening ribbon of teak emphasizes the break between the dining room and the living room, while glass-and-walnut pocket doors separate the living room from the kitchen. “The feel needed to be light and minimal, but we wanted to have the ability to close off rooms for entertaining,” explains the architect. The decor—which the client requested be serene and sophisticated with ethnic influences—further helped to individualize the rooms. “She wanted something refined and elegant, not that industrial loft look,” Forino says. To achieve this, the designer favored natural textures: Materials such as linen and pressed wood pulp grace wallcoverings and window treatments, and focal furnishings lean tactile in rattan, wood and woven leather. Chalky paint tones and classic Calacatta and Carrara marble finishes carry that sense of softness through to the kitchen and bathrooms.
The walnut-framed glass pocket doors between the living room and kitchen are among several visual “portals” throughout the home. “I think once you put anything behind clear glass, it suddenly becomes more beautiful,” Forino says. Flanking the feature are vintage armchairs from the client’s collection upholstered in a creamy Dedar bouclé and a drinks table by Tokujin Yoshioka for Glas Italia.

Forino custom-designed the Patagonia stone fireplace as a focal point for the living room joined by crisp B&B Italia sofas. A quad of vintage floor lamps from the client’s collection adds further symmetry while a pair of Giopato & Coombes glass, gem and brass sconces perches above the mantle. The limestone two-piece coffee table is another custom Forino design.
Calm and neutral are certainly design threads, but Forino took care to build in moments of whimsy and eclecticism, too. Among the creamy, monochromatic palette of the living room, the pattern of a Patagonia stone gas fireplace creates a compelling focal point. Equally idiosyncratic are the numerous photographic works proudly displayed throughout the residence—most of which are by the owner’s artist mother and friends in India. Overlooking the dining table, for instance, is a series of cattle portraits whose warm caramel tones reflect the palette of the interiors. “It’s an unusual, personal collection,” says the designer, adding that art curation was quite collaborative. “We played with scale in groupings and decided which walls to leave quiet. We spent a couple days laying everything out and seeing what colors worked together, and had a lot of fun finding that balance.” Another integral project goal was infusing the space with as much light as possible. “These Tribeca lofts used to be factories—they weren’t designed as residences and are, by nature, dark,” says Forino. As such, the flooring was chosen for both its light-refracting pale tones and low profile. “We engineered unfinished rift white oak to minimize the subfloor build-up while maintaining the natural oak look,” Antoniades explains. Meanwhile, to avoid losing light to dropped ceilings or having exposed wires for the hanging light fixtures, conduits were cleverly built into the ceiling’s crossing trim. Here and throughout the condo, bespoke millwork does more than just add visual dynamism. Like the conduits, details such as the living room’s fireplace bump-out, and strategically placed closets, serve to cloak the inelegant but necessary aspects of modern life, such as radiators, air-conditioning units and the ultimate nuisance of a home with small children: clutter. Still, every detail no matter its utility, contributes to a cohesive, intimate narrative. “The loft has its own personality and story,” Forino says. “And the beamed ceilings and steel windows still give it a cool, Tribeca vibe. That juxtaposition is what makes it beautiful and unique.”

ad it not been for the notorious traffic on the East End of Long Island, Jaimie Abel and her husband may never have spotted the stately white house that would eventually become their family’s weekend retreat. To avoid the bumper-to-bumper situation unfolding on the main route, they took a scenic back road through the quiet hamlet of Water Mill. While driving down a country lane, they came upon a many-gabled Shingle-style residence bounded by expansive fields in every direction. “It’s surrounded on all sides by farmland, some that’s been in the same family for generations,” she says. Though the sawdust had barely settled at the newly constructed house, the couple loved the agrarian setting and jumped at the opportunity to mold the home into something they could call their own. “When we came in, it was a blank canvas,” recalls Jaimie, an architectural
designer who worked with the home’s builder, Michael V. Crocitto of East End Building Co., to tailor the finishes to her specifications. Among the many interior upgrades: rustic French oak plank floors, custom brushed limestone fireplace surrounds and reclaimed wood ceilings with hand-hewn beams. Surface treatments range from nauticalleaning board-and-batten in the entry hall to the study’s inky blue Venetian plaster, which was inspired by the walls of Sag Harbor shop Monc XIII, one of Jaimie’s favorite local design destinations. When it came time to address the decor, she called on designer Marie-Christine McNally, who had collaborated on several projects with the family over the years. “It’s so easy working with Jaimie because our aesthetic inclinations are so well-aligned,” says McNally. “Our goal was to create a Hamptons home that’s a workhorse—that could stand up to being a full house every weekend.”
Bordered by acres of reserve farmland, the rural setting of this Water Mill, New York, Shinglestyle home appealed to architectural designer Jaimie Abel and her family. “We loved that it felt like living on a farm without actually having to take care of one,” she says.

To accomplish that, McNally relied on a mix of perfectly imperfect vintage pieces, no doubt influenced by her own upbringing as the daughter of a French antiques dealer. While her own taste skews less traditional, she admittedly has a soft spot for old-school materials such as fruitwoods and marble, as well as verdigris that comes with age. “The power of antique pieces is that they lend a certain visual interest that you just cannot get in new furniture,” she says. “It’s a special client who can understand that and embrace it and Jaimie is one of those people.” Most of the furnishings McNally sourced for the project are from the midcentury era, including her favorite piece: the low, round coffee table in the study, which she scored at RE Steele Antiques in East Hampton. “Over the years
people have waxed over the stains and dents in the wood, so even though it’s beat-up, it’s beautiful. And the brass around the edge has the patina of age, which gives it a richness that’s hard to replicate,” she says. There’s another advantage to using time-worn pieces: They can handle the dings and spills that come from life with three young children and two dogs. The family’s need for durable finishes and furnishings drove many of the design decisions in the house. For instance, McNally incorporated dark, forgiving hues for a pair of family room sofas and hard-wearing catalog rugs over more delicate custom pieces for the children’s bedrooms. “There are no rooms in this house intended to be precious or for show,” she says.
In the study, Jaimie collaborated with East End Building Co. on the waxed Venetian plaster finish that she says, “takes on a different look depending on the light.” McNally found the teak desk by Jens Quistgaard at Laurin Copen Antiques and the Hans Wegner armchair via 1stdibs. The custom Moroccan rug is from Doris Leslie Blau.

To keep the emphasis on the views of the surrounding fields, McNally stuck to a neutral palette for the doubleheight living room. A custom lantern by Michael Del Piero illuminates Charlotte Perriand’s marble-topped Rio coffee table, a pair of vintage leather Børge Mogensen chairs and a Michael Del Piero chaise. The focal artworks, stacked in a vertical trio, are custom horse hair pieces by textile artist Alexandra Kohl.

The atmosphere is cozy and relaxed in the family room where easy upholstered pieces from Montauk Sofa flank a custom concrete fireplace surround designed by Jaimie. Reclaimed antique gray barn siding gives the ceiling a warm rusticity that contrasts with Lindsey Adelman’s modern branch chandelier. Overall, the home’s clean-lined interiors exude an air of laid-back luxury with an emphasis on texture over bold hues. For the double-height living room, McNally opted for white walls and modern silhouettes in creamy linens and buttery caramel leathers to keep the focus on the scenic views to the north and south. In the study, she brought in vintage furnishings and a Moroccan rug to complement the velvety indigo plaster walls. Upstairs, the bedrooms stay true to the neutral palette, yet each guest room offers a unique hospitality experience for visiting friends. “Marie-Christine did an amazing job in treating each space differently,” says Jaimie. “One has a nautical feel, one is more boho-chic, one has a more modern vibe. I love that we were able to explore so many different styles without any of them feeling foreign or out of place.” While the home has no shortage of solitary spots to escape to, the couple is especially fond of the pool house, which Jaimie designed and affectionately refers to as “our retreat from the actual house.” Surrounded by fields, it’s the perfect place to idle away the hours, watching the days pass into dusk. “Every single night the sunset speaks for itself,” she says, “and we’re reminded of why we bought this place.”
