ZOOM LAND!
Back in June, I was moderating a Zoom meeting when my husband popped into my office to announce that we had a buyer for our house. “We need to look at this new place, pronto!” Lickety-split, we were moving out of the home we have lived in for nearly a decade and into a fab new rental further east and across from the beach. With all this taking place in the midst of Covid, my head was swirling. Like so many, our home has become a safe haven; nearly every hour of every day spent under that roof. As I write this note, it’s day three in our new place and I’m back to Zooming away. Yes, I had that moment of, “Yikes, what have we done?” But, more than ever, I am grateful to have a new home to settle into. I hope that this September/October issue brings you inspiration for your own home and a respite from what’s happening in the world.

ow more than ever, we’re contemplating what comforts bring joy to a home. To that end, designers are all about elements that create tranquility and contentment in private spaces, and found that it’s the simple things—cozy outdoor areas, the feel of soft linens and the play of light on a wall—that truly create happiness. For Brooke and Steve Giannetti, a designer and architect, pleasure can be found in the fresh air. “Connections to the garden are at the heart and soul of what we do,” says Steve. The husband-andwife team lives on a farm in Southern California where they’ve perfected the art of indoor-outdoor living. Their secret lies in making the great outdoors more intimate. “The feeling of being in an open meadow is sometimes not the most relaxing,” explains Steve. “We found that if you can break an alfresco space into loosely defined rooms—using features like a wall, a garden border or a tree—it makes a space feel more inviting and protected.” Their farm is full of examples, such as a seating arrangement placed under the canopy of a heritage oak, a fire pit ringed by a sectional or a table located by a vegetable garden. “Being outside is something we crave all year round,” Brooke says. “Living in nature calms us and brings us into the moment. It is perhaps the best luxury.” In Atlanta, designer Erika Hollinshead Ward finds luxury where the day begins and ends. “Having a bed that’s made with good linens is a treat,” she says. “You may not be able to control what happens in the world, but sleeping with beautiful linens is a joy.” Ward favors bamboo sheets for their sustainability and hand, noting the fabric becomes even softer with washing, and for curtains, she turns to cotton linen. “The weave of a crisp linen makes a great canvas for color and pattern,” she says. “To me, drapery is like art on the wall—and it can elevate and finish a space the same way a good blazer makes an outfit.” Brad Ford, a New York City designer, calls natural light “very healing” and seeks to add as much of it as possible to any dwelling, be it a city apartment or a house in the country. “In a dense metropolis, privacy can be an issue, so we like to add solar shades or sheers on windows,” he says. “These allow you privacy but also an amount of light.” Ford is also known for strategically placing mirrors and furniture with reflective surfaces in a room to amplify the light. When designing a new home, he always advocates for as many windows as possible. “I would live in a glass house if I could,” he says. “I believe there is no better mood enhancer than natural light.” For these design professionals, providing easy indulgences is rewarding. “Many of my clients come home exhausted after a long day,” Ward says. “If I can give them a space that’s tailored to them, and that provides comfort, I am also fulfilled.”

Eve Ashcraft knows a good palette. A formally trained painter, she earned her stripes as a color specialist for Martha Stewart and today touts an elite moniker—architectural color consultant— lending her expertise to residential homes, cultural institutions, public works projects and corporate branding the world over. Luxe called upon Ashcraft to learn more of her vibrant and innate approach. eveashcraft.com Formative influence. My mother was a painter. We had a yellow living room with fuchsia silk pillows. I would come home from school and she’d say, ‘Grab a brush’—she’d be painting the kitchen cabinets, again. It never occurred to me until I started working with clients that anyone would be afraid of color. Less is best. Fan decks are an instrument of torture. I’ve had clients test 30 colors before calling me. They were probably feeling insecure to begin with, and there’s this internet problem of, ‘I’ll just scroll to the next page and oops, it’s 4 a.m.’ Endless choice can have a negative effect, so I edit and distill my ideas before sharing.
Go-to paint trick. When I want a space to feel calm, one easy tip is to reduce contrast, especially between building components, like the trim, walls and ceiling. Make those elements the same or almost the same color and boundaries will disappear, creating a sense of spaciousness. Golden rule. The more color you have, the more color you can use. It’s like a great party—just jam everyone in there.

Artist’s intuition. The only thing I love about getting older is that I’ve developed respect for my instincts. There are moments when I walk into a room and just know. I had clients with this tasteful blue parlor, but there was something sad about it. I said, ‘You’re going to kill me, but this room should be tobacco with cream trim.’ Six months later, I received a love letter about how they never leave it now. That kind of transformation is luxury.

Raymond Barberousse’s path from architect to lighting designer is a telling reminder that good things can result from trying times. Shortly after buying a house in 2009, he was laid off from a Chicago architecture firm, leaving him to D.I.Y. much of his home’s furnishings. His sculptural lighting designs caught the eye of an owner of a local decor store, and the rest is history. Today, Barberousse and his wife split their time between Chicago and Miami drawing inspiration from both locales. “Chicago is energetic; Miami is more laid-back,” says the designer. As a member of the Black Artists + Designers Guild, he is an advocate for promoting inclusivity in the design community, but ultimately, he says, “It’s about the work. I want the work to represent itself.”

“Don’t underestimate me,” says Denise McKenzie-Lee, known for her earthy ceramics layered with texture. Her foray into the medium began with a gift certificate to a pottery class. “I love entertaining, so I wanted to make my own set of dishes,” she recalls. “The instructor said, ‘It’s going to be a long time before you can do that.’ It wasn’t. I’m prolific when I become interested in something.” Her pieces, crafted with porcelain and stoneware, are perfectly imperfect reflecting a gritty sentiment. “I call it rustic modern. I’m attracted to textures: a rusty tray, rocks, rough edges, things that look burnt,” she says. Next up: experimenting with glass and non-functional work. No one is underestimating her now.

ASP & Company, Los Angeles Anika Poitier’s first love was film. Yet with a child on the way, she says, “I needed a creative outlet that was more kid-friendly.” So Poitier teamed up with her interior designer mother on a textile and accessories line. Their first collection centered on female artists and grew from there. A signature design is an infinity-style serpent. “It symbolizes strength and the journey to empowerment,” says the designer, who employs her filmmaker eye when selecting materials, and is drawn to linen for its transparent and natural qualities. “I love the way light shines through. We all want to exist in a calm, nurturing space.” Today, that notion rings more true than ever.

Fragrant flowers, coffee and bubbly all in one place? The heaven is real at Ann’s Florist in Fort Lauderdale, a family-owned bloom business that’s also a coffee shop, Champagne bar and gift emporium filled with treasures new and old. “When I’m at market, antique shows or auctions, I try to find inspiring items that make me feel something, bring back memories of a trip I loved, or make me yearn to visit somewhere new,” says co-owner Kim Fuentes, adding, “I always have a French section because I’ve been a serious Francophile most of my life and find that many people dream of being in Paris.” Fuentes also shaped the coffee bar after cafes in Paris. “I knew I wanted Carrara marble even though people tried to talk me out of it.
I wanted the wear, and even the coffee marks, so it would look like it was brought from a sweet cafe in the 6th arrondissement in Paris,” explains Fuentes. “The Champagne bar, on the other hand, I wanted to be darker and sexier. We used a copper metal top that we oxidized. The chandeliers add romance.” After spotting a popular rose wall in London, Fuentes created a coveted, Insta-worthy table for guests that sits in front of a wall donning more than 5,000 roses (below). What’s she putting in vases this fall? “More freeformed and wild bouquets. Less of the tightly constructed, formal pavé styles,” she says. “And more color. Fall will not be limited to a dark palette. Always in search of accessories and interesting items to finish projects, interior designer Lauren Czarniecki was inspired after honeymooning in Italy to open Czar Interiors Boutique in downtown Delray Beach. “I found so many unique items in Italy that I wanted to bring in for my clients and the community,” says Czarniecki of the quaint store filled with handpicked goods, hostess gifts and vintage and custom furnishings. Czarniecki feels that some of the best inspiration comes from the past. “I fell in love with the world of art history because it told the stories behind the pieces of art, and it’s the same with interiors,” she says. “History tells the story of how and why these pieces were chosen and I love reinterpreting those ideas and bringing them to life in a new and contemporary way.” czarinteriors.com

Interior designers Jennifer Bunsa and Stephanie Denault know how to work a room. The duo has launched Work|Room in the Miami Design District, a shoppable office space where they can test design ideas and focus on materiality and craft. “We wanted to find a light-filled space that was one big open room to foster collaboration and simultaneously function as an office and living room,” says Bunsa, who also uses it as a base for her interior design business, Bunsa Studio. “The idea is that the consumer can walk into a fully realized space and get the sense of how these objects or pieces of furniture relate to their context.” Shoppers won’t find Miami’s trademark white-on-white aesthetic; rather, the vibe is warm and bright, with modern options that still feel like they belong. Work|Room’s focus is on handmade goods, furniture, lighting and artwork sourced from local and national makers and from Bunsa and Denault’s world travels. ART HIVE Art moves from the walls to the streets of Rosemary Square, the 72-acre neighborhood in downtown West Palm Beach that will morph into a work/live/play destination over the next 5 years. That’s where Rita Chraibi, the French-Moroccan designer who founded International Designers in Casablanca, has opened her second global headquarters. Even bigger news: She’s partnering with Roche Bobois as the exclusive interior designer for the brand’s 60th anniversary. Chraibi will oversee several design projects in Miami, including a $30 million residence in Miami Beach. “My collaborations with Roche Bobois represent the firm’s haute couture designers, who craft tailor-made home pieces,” says Chraibi. “I balance comfort with the signature styles of world-renowned fashion designers Christian Lacroix, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Kenzo, and fabric brands such as Lelièvre Paris and Missoni Home. Does this collection work for every home? The collection is derived from the dream of living outdoors and the notion of a palm frond waving in the wind. The great Italian designer Renzo Mongiardino sprinkled rattan in his masterful projects and taught us that they bring a casual, approachable touch to a room. These pieces work everywhere.

How did your childhood influence this collection? I grew up in a very innocent time in South Florida during the 1960s and ’70s. My mother liked to shop in Palm Beach, and she would take us to Worth Avenue, where the glamour of the day was everywhere. All houses of that era had rattan and natural rugs, and I loved to look at images of the big Florida hotels of the 1920s, The Breakers and the Biltmore in Miami with their rattan and wicker-filled loggias. I wanted to recreate those lost or vintage items that one could not find anymore.

“If you begin at no, you’ll never get to yes.” Words Nancy Epstein has lived and worked by since designing her first piece of furniture more than 20 years ago. “I brought the design to our hometown cabinetmaker and he didn’t like it. I didn’t listen and had him make it anyway, and he was so taken by the results that he asked me to join his company designing products.” Such tenacity eventually led Epstein to found Artistic Tile, where she and her team aim to “make the world a better place … one tile at a time.” Today, her tile empire encompasses eight national showrooms, a cadre of reps working with hundreds of architects, designers and dealers, an engaging website, and 100,000 social media followers. “We are very ‘connected’ to our audience and their preferences, well beyond sales numbers,” she says.

For designer Adam Hunter, this impressive space started as a dream. “I had a vision of an all-metal kitchen in a beautiful patina with a floating marble hood,” he explains. With the help of all-star architect Steve Giannetti, trusting clients and an ace custom cabinetry company, Hunter was lucky enough to see his fantasy come to life. adamhunterinc.com What a room! I wanted to change up my own aesthetic with this project and I certainly reached high. But it really started with doing something unique, which was creating an all-metal kitchen.
How did you decide on the marble hood? We actually had to frame the house so it could support the hood, but I knew we had to go for it! The marble, which my dealers call a pinot noir, has moments of eggplant, burgundy and just the right kind of gold. When it all gleams together at a certain point in the day, it’s magic.

Talk to us about the cabinetry. Amuneal created some really luxurious textures and colors with stainless steel designs. We sort of invented a patina we’re calling “root beer.” It works so well with some of the other tones and materials found throughout the space. The glass cases flanking the range continue the view out to the backyard—they’re definitely a favorite feature.

To create a soaring space in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, designer Amber Brown Matlack of Brown Interiors knew she wanted to preserve the charm and history of the original 1935 Tudor-style residence when crafting this great room. After combining what was once a galley kitchen, small breakfast nook and dining room into a central area, she extended the ceiling into the attic to achieve a vaulted effect and expose the wooden beam. The warm color scheme evokes a nostalgic feel, including the mauve and gray tones on the cabinetry and a beautiful stone backsplash. Knowing that the indoor pool would be used through the colder months, the team nestled the feature in the ground, adding a south-facing skylight. “Between the warmth of the rammed earth and the natural light, it’s a perfect winter pool,” says Historical Concepts principal Kevin Clark. “It doesn’t feel like a cold conservatory.”

Sweet 1ESCAPE A BRIDGEHAMPTON SPORTS BARN OFFERS THE ULTIMATE FAMILY RETREAT.
“With a remote property, you have the opportunity to create a destination,” says Kevin Clark, principal of Historical Concepts. And so it came to be that a family’s brief for a recreational outbuilding on their Bridgehampton estate evolved into a sports barn laden with wellness features. Surrounded by acres of pristine farmland, the structure demanded a sensitive approach, one that Historical Concepts—an architecture firm known for legacy properties rooted in place— was well-suited for. Alongside interior designer Steven Gambrel, landscape architect Edmund Hollander and master builder Michael Davis, who assembled the team, plans were drawn for a lowslung, cedar-clad activity center softly folded into the rolling terrain. The decision to nestle the barn into, not onto, the landscape is an exercise in both historical accuracy and ingenuity. First, it references semisubterranean potato barns local to the region. Second, it meets a Hamptons building code limiting accessory structures to 20 feet high, while still allowing for a three-story structure for all the family’s amenity wishes to live in harmony. In full, the sprawling retreat includes family offices, a large vaulted great room, a kitchen, an indoor lap pool and spa, men’s and women’s locker rooms and an exercise room—plus a sunken tennis court with viewing pavilion. “The lay of the land and the feel of a place reveal themselves when you put pen to paper,” says Clark. “The top floor gym has a wonderful

view over the property, and the sauna, steam and massage rooms round out the indoor activities,” shares Davis. “In addition to the gathering room, there is a suite of three family offices particularly helpful during these times.” Throughout, Gambrel’s interiors scheme—a medley of warm woods and chalky blue, green and sand hues—sets a restorative tone. “The palette is muted, based on the environment as inspiration,” he explains, and indeed, the natural setting inspires. Complementing the agrarian landscape, Hollander took care in employing native plantings, such as bayberry, winterberry and viburnum, to welcome birds, bees and other pollinators. “Healthy, living landscapes are essential to the wellness of all visitors, all species,” he notes. Like many affluent New Yorkers, the family decamped to their country residence in the early days of the pandemic. In turn, the beloved barn has become a haven beyond anything client or design team could have planned for—a hub of safety, togetherness and health. “One of the most rewarding parts of our job is when you see a place you designed be truly life-altering for a family,” says Clark, adding, “When you treat home as resort, there’s something magical about that.”

In Vastu Shastra, there are 5 elements: Earth (Bhumi), Water (Jala), Air (Vayu), Fire (Agni), and Space (Akasha). The central part of a house is ruled by the space element. As all directions meet in the center, it is the holiest and most powerful zone. So when possible, I like to ensure that the most-used room—often the living area—is located in the direct center and designed with a minimal aesthetic for less clutter and low furniture to allow for plenty of natural light. There are serene rooms and then there are rooms where serenity seems to emanate from the walls, softening your disposition on viewing. This elixir of a bedroom in Jackson Hole, Wyoming—a collaboration between WRJ Design and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson—is decidedly the latter. Here, designer Rush Jenkins and architect Ray Calabro sound off on achieving Zen in tandem. wrjdesign.com; bcj.com Set the scene. RC: The site for the house is on a butte that overlooks the Snake River Valley with extraordinary views. The bedroom is located at the southern, most private end of the home and is embedded into the gentle slope of the site, connecting with the landscape at a more immediate scale. RJ: There’s a calmness and a majestic beauty that surrounds you. That’s what the color palette, the lighting, the simplicity of the design were about—creating harmony with nature. Material connection. RC: The southern wall is smooth-formed cast-in-place concrete, the flooring is white oak with a custom finish, the window wall is aluminum with a clear anodized finish, and the ceiling is composed of panels of white oak. RJ: The rug is bamboo silk, the bed is really luxurious suede, the pillows are a cashmere plaid from Loro Piana. Those tonal elements are about continuity with the exteriors and the architecture. Design highlights. RC: The water feature that stretches along the master suite is dynamic. We placed mirror-finish stainless steel panels on the roof overhang above the stream. The combination of gently moving water and mirror reflects constantly changing patterns of light into the master suite throughout the day. The effect is magical. RJ: The seamless windows in this room actually open from the bottom. Can you imagine waking up hearing the water rippling and the birds chirping in the garden? Sometimes, you’ll see a moose having a drink. You don’t get closer to nature than that. Dream team. RC: WRJ’s selections reinforce the quiet elegance of the home. The luxe finishes and fabrics express their commitment to quality and attention to detail that are guiding principles in the architecture. RJ: This house was a unified vision. The client wanted peace and simplicity, and every team member came at this design from the same philosophy.

AS TOLD TO GRACE BEULEY HUNT
From the very beginning, it was meant to be a place of rest. The architect picked the location for it’s amazing natural light and we worked with a feng shui master. Building started in September to encourage good luck and prosperity for the home. It was a special brief in that way—there was meaning behind every detail. We’re seeing more and more clients asking for specialty rooms, but these clients—two firstgeneration Chinese sisters—really use this space. After a hard day’s work, they retreat to drink tea together, practice calligraphy and meditate. They wanted to honor their heritage—but to modernize, too. Tea room window treatments are traditionally bamboo; we chose a light grass Conrad shade. The Chilewich rug is textured like a tatami mat and the white-oak furnishings are custom by Chi Wing Lo, a Chinese furniture designer living in Italy. The table has natural stone for water draining and a metal plate for the hot teapot to rest on. In spring, the sisters drink Longjing tea. In summer, jasmine tea paired with red bean pastry. In autumn, black tea with moon cake and in winter, Pu’er tea. They have an incredible collection of ceramic vessels; their most-prized is a Gongfu tea set from Yingge, a town famous for its production of porcelain. It was an inspiring project in that we learned so much from our clients. It also showed us how important it is to have a room dedicated to feeling good in—to feeling happy. Find your canvas. We think wood boards make for beautiful backgrounds, but any traylike surface will do.
Decide on your must-haves. What are your favorite cheeses? Are you obsessed with olives? Or is red pepper jelly your jam (pun intended)?
Start pairing. Choose more foods with your first picks in mind and be intuitive about it. Just because something isn’t a conventional match, doesn’t mean you can’t include it. Trust your gut, as they say.
Slice, dice + roll! Get creative with presentation; think brie triangles and cheddar chunks, pepperoni chips and rolled prosciutto.
Top it off with extra flavor. Nestle dipping bowls into spaces around the board and fill them with yummy condiments (this can also be a great place for items that give off liquid you want to contain, like olives and pickles).

After receiving more than 1,100 entries, a panel of industry experts selected regional winners across 10 categories. Since being cast as the interior design expert in the Emmy-award winning show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Thom Filicia has hosted several shows for the Style Network and appeared as talent on the HGTV Network. His design portfolio includes firstclass hotels and special projects, and he is also the author of Thom Filicia Style and American Beauty: Renovating and Decorating a Beloved Retreat. Thom is the creative mind and driving force behind the Thom Filicia Home Collection and he operates Sedgwick & Brattle, a to-the-trade showroom in the New York Design Center.
Alexa Hampton took over ownership and design leadership of Mark Hampton in 1998 and has designed a growing stable of home products for brands including Kravet, Theodore Alexander, Stark Carpet, Visual Comfort & Co., Chesneys, SA Baxter, White River, The Shade Store and Globus Cork. She serves on the board of trustees for the New York School of Interior Design, The New York Landmarks Conservancy and the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art. She is the author of The Language of Interior Design and Decorating in Detail and has been a contributing columnist for The Wall Street Journal “Off Duty” section.

James Magni has been recognized as one of the foremost modernist designers of our time, leaving an indelible mark on the world of architecture and interior design. In 1988, he established Los Angeles-based Magni Design, and in 1996, created the Magni Home Collection, which showcases lighting, rugs and furniture of his design. James has developed a style that marries sumptuous luxury with modernism’s clean lines and uncluttered spaces. His passion for fine art has made him a favorite amongst major collectors, museum directors and trustees, though he is equally sought after by innovators and entrepreneurs in many fields.
Lori Weitzner is internationally known for her contributions to the world of textiles and wallcoverings under the Weitzner Limited brand, as well as for her rug designs for Perennials and West Elm and passementerie for Samuel & Sons. Her work is in the permanent collections of museums such as the Cooper Hewitt in New York and Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Lori is the recipient of more than 25 prestigious design awards. She recently authored her first book—Ode to Color, The Ten Essential Palettes for Living and Design— published by Harper Collins, and lectures around the world on the effects of color on our well-being.
A native New Yorker, Pamela Jaccarino is the founding editor in chief of Luxe Interiors + Design, the largest residential architecture and design brand in the country, a position she has held since 2005. Pamela has been instrumental in the growth of the brand and continues to champion its fresh vision and evolution. She also frequently lectures on design-related topics. Prior to joining Sandow in 2002, Pamela was an executive editor with the LVMH Group.

Michael Imber, FAIA, is the principal architect of a modern classical design firm in San Antonio, Texas. Michael is a founding counselor of the Congress of Residential Architects and the founding president of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, Texas Chapter, and sits on the Sir John Soane’s Museum Foundation Board and the board of advisors for the Design Leadership Network. He has been honored with numerous awards including the Texas Society of Architects William W. Caudill, FAIA Award, the Arthur Ross Award, the national Palladio Award and the Texas ICAA John Staud Award. He was inducted into the AIA College of Fellows in 2008.

Originally built as a horse barn in 1911, this Newport Beach, California, cottage has been reimagined over the last century. In its latest iteration, the kitchen and master bathroom were artfully expanded without interfering with the original structures.

With landscape architect Jean Mus having transformed the exterior of this Texas home into a Tuscan-style garden, the interior designer carried that theme into the design of other parts of the outdoor area, including the veranda and a courtyard, complete with lush greenery.
Drawing inspiration from English garden rooms, the grounds of this Wakefield, Rhode Island, residence were divided into an entry court, a terrace with fire feature, a woodland garden, a dining terrace, a formal garden, two fencing pavilions and a sweeping lawn. Outside of a Dallas domicile, the precise, modern lines of site walls, water features and retaining walls are all softened by the calculated addition of large trees and textural plantings.

rom its historic Art Deco decadence to modern glass-and-steel skyscrapers, Miami has long been an oasis for creators reimagining the way people live. So moving to the Magic City felt like kismet for one New York transplant building his dream home along one of Coral Gables’ winding canals. This provided a precious opportunity for the homeowner to dive deeper into his love of modernism, says designer Robert Rionda. “He wanted classic and timeless design, incorporating several periods—including Art Deco, midcentury modern and contemporary elements,” Rionda says. To integrate this eclectic mix of iconic eras, the designer reunited with a frequent collaborator, architect Rafael Portuondo, who worked with residential designers Jorge Landa and Amanda Del Rio. The architecture reflects the homeowner’s fascination with Brazilian modernism, which merges tropical materials with streamlined forms—a design suitable for the property, surrounded by water and lush palm trees. “It’s a more organic approach,” Portuondo explains. The home plays with natural textures, like the local coral stone used on exterior pathways and, along the rectilinear façade, rough-hewn ipe mashrabiya sunscreens encircling the second level, disrupting the sleek concrete and floor-to-ceiling glass below. “When the sun rises, the light becomes diffused and beautiful inside,” the architect says. Adds Rionda: “At night, the house shines like a Japanese lantern when the interior lights come through those screens.” Landscape designer Jorge Sanchez and landscape architect Brian Vertesch immersed the home in a verdant range of plantings, such as white Geiger trees in the entry courtyard, a cabbage palm grove at the drive and coconut palms by the pool’s sand beach area. “We really wanted to emphasize the beauty of tropical and subtropical foliage, which is just made for contemporary architecture,” Sanchez explains. The duo flanked the home’s elevated glass walls

with tall, flowering specimens like heliconias to create a tree-house effect. “The variety we used grow to about 14 feet tall,” Vertesch says. Inside, the home’s exploration of design periods needed to nurture the structure’s warm approach to modernism, emphasized by the rich oak wall paneling used throughout. This was not the time for hard-edge, cold minimalism. Instead, the client wanted to carve out intimate areas to socialize or enjoy quiet moments of solitude with the view. “It’s about making every space feel like a different destination, whether it’s for eating, swimming or just lounging in the hammock,” Rionda says. “He wanted it to have a bit of a resort feel.” To create this atmosphere, the designer favored tactile finishes like warm woods and metal patinas, which also brought harmony among a range of styles. This was especially true in the living area. Doubling as a work space for the homeowner, the room offers a survey of iconic pieces, including curvaceous Czech Art Deco armchairs, a rosewood-and-leather desk inspired by a Milo Baughman design and a midcentury bronze-andpewter coffee table. This playful mixture of eras “sets the tone,” Rionda explains. To illuminate the expansive rooms, he had particular fun with vintage lighting, including an iconic Italian sputnik pendant in the billiards room and a pair of 1960s brass table lamps in the dining area—a perfect example of quirky Palm Springs modernism. Leaning toward a soothing, neutral palette of taupes, grays and creamy whites, the client also preferred “to play with textures instead of bold colors,” Rionda says. As such, materials run the gamut: a white leather headboard wall in the master bedroom, woven dining chairs, a Lucite bench in the family area upholstered in Mongolian lamb. One exception is the outdoor terrace, where the homeowner encouraged the team to use various hues to integrate the space with the surrounding nature. “The client wanted to make sure the color of the pool reflected the water from the canals,” explains general contractor Jose Mendiola. Rionda introduced other jolts of color primarily through curating the home’s art collection, which focuses on the owner’s love of contemporary paintings and traditional African folk art. The entrance hall and stairwell in particular became a micro gallery, featuring vivid pieces in the former and, in the latter, vintage Moroccan wedding veils the designer found on his 50th birthday trip to the country. These serendipitous finds were all part of the treasure hunt spirit behind creating the home—a process the client was involved in every step of the way, from endless afternoons wandering through antique stores to passionate chats with the team about design history. “For him, this wasn’t about securing an investment or trying to amass any particular collection,” Rionda says. “This project was all about the discovery.”

t’s no secret that the most fruitful designer-client relationships are built on trust. But when that bond has lasted nearly two decades and seen numerous milestones, friendship enters the equation, too. Such is the case for designer Ray Booth and the owners of this South Florida estate. That the couple and the designer hit it off is no mere coincidence. Long before they officially started working together, the wife had ripped out several pages of images from interior design magazines for inspiration for her New York home. It was later, while browsing through Booth’s portfolio, that she realized all the spaces she loved were his. “Right away, I knew that’s who I wanted to hire,” she recalls. “We were on the same page aesthetically.” At the time, the homeowners had just married and were on the verge of blending their families and starting a new life together. Since then, 18 years have passed, and Booth has completed four projects for them—including this new-construction house. What makes this one significant, however, is it is the first joint ground-up undertaking for the clients and Booth, who has an architecture background. “One of the things the couple loved about Palm Beach is the lushness of the vegetation,” the designer says, noting the owners wanted the views of the Intracoastal and the tropical foliage to play an integral role in the design. With Michael Perry of MP Design & Architecture, Inc. serving as architect of record, Booth accomplished that by laying the residence along a central axis, a plan executed by general contractor Paul Wittman. “The layout was informed by their desire to walk in the front door and see either green or blue at any

vista,” the designer says. To further solidify the connection to nature, he incorporated full-length retractable glass doors in many of the waterfront rooms so the clients could “throw the doors back into the walls and have the house completely open up to the beautiful landscape,” he says. Outside, silver buttonwood and Clusia trees comingle to form a tropical oasis. “Because Florida is so flat, I saw an opportunity to layer the garden so it unfolds naturally and effortlessly,” says landscape designer Fernando Wong. He employed coconut and mahogany trees to frame the entrance, with two Macarthur palms at the front door, lending a sense of symmetry and grandeur. For the interior architecture, Booth created a Bahamianinspired clean slate, opting for pale gray limestone floors and wood ceilings for most of the spaces on the first level. “We wanted the ceiling to have a bleached-out, almost driftwood-like texture to further tell the story of where we are,” he explains. A neutral palette of crisp whites and creamy tans—carried through the majority of the furnishings and rugs—reinforces the structure’s tropical feel. The homeowners wanted a mix of large upholstered pieces—like the main bedroom’s shapely headboard and the living area’s boxy sofas, armchairs and ottomans—as well as antiques and artifacts that hint at their extensive travels. The global accents include a vintage Moroccan rug in the dining area, guest bedroom pillows made of Indian-inspired textiles and homages to the wife’s Italian heritage, such as a Renaissance chair in the stairwell, framed sketches from Florence on a dining area wall and the living area’s 300-year-old iron chandeliers. “With any beach project, there is an opportunity to bring in some real whimsy and character,” Booth says. “At the same time, we never want a room to be so steeped in one period that it doesn’t have a sense of timelessness.” In fact, many of the pieces have been with the couple for the duration of their relationship and their partnership with Booth. For instance, the living area coffee table dates back to the owners’ first home together in New York. “Each of our collaborations is built on what came before, and this one was the culmination of everything we’ve done,” Booth says. To that the end, the entire project came together in record time for a heartbreaking reason: The husband had been diagnosed with cancer shortly after construction began. “Because this house was near and dear to my husband’s heart, the entire crew knew we had to get it done so he could enjoy it,” the wife says. Sadly, he lost his battle but was able to enjoy the residence for nearly a year and a half after moving in. Says Booth, “It breaks my heart, loving them as I do, but it gives me a lot of joy knowing we were able to realize a project that meant so much to them. I’m quite honored to have been invited into their pursuits of home together.”

hen interior designers Laila Colvin and Rafaela Simoes received a call from a repeat client requesting help for her newest residence, a Bal Harbour high-rise, they were already armed with captivating shorthand to produce an eclectic look they knew she would appreciate. Inspired by the owner’s globetrotting sojourns and Brazilian heritage, Colvin and Simoes presented a worldly concept with South American influences serving as the foundation. “She appreciates wood, stone and nature,” Colvin says, “so these became our initial inspirations.” As the duo kicked off the project, the client was snapping up distinctive finds while traveling in India. But pieces like the Asian rug and statues that landed in the family room weren’t the homeowner’s only contributions. From the outset, Colvin and Simoes faced the challenge of also incorporating items from two of her former residences: antique, eclectic and French elements from a Lincoln Road house and more modern ones from a nearby apartment. To create cohesion among the varied furnishings, “we placed the pieces she wanted to include from the previous projects in the bedrooms and family room—the private spaces,” Simoes says. The client’s love of collecting drove many of the interior designers’ decisions. “We created niches for the artifacts she finds during her travels,” Simoes says. General contractor Joey Newman built shelving in the family room, the living area, a hallway and the master bedroom, where he removed two walk-in closets to create an alcove. “There

are so many stories behind each element in this residence,” he says. “The woodwork, textures and colors make each interior pop because of the Brazilian flair Laila and Rafaela bring to their projects.” To establish a unified Brazilian impression for the mix of inventory, the team installed oak elements, including a 6-foot-wide door, paneling in the foyer and ceiling slabs in the living area, where the Atlantic Ocean’s shades of aqua pour in through oversize windows. “When you usually enter a residence in this part of the country, you see a white, flat ceiling,” Colvin says. “Because the view is so dynamic, we thought the light would be too much, so we clad the ceiling in wood.” As a contrast to the abundance of oak, the team chose pale porcelain tile flooring and covered other walls in a custom Venetian plaster with a suede treatment. “We like to take a rough material and give it a fine finish,” Simoes says. The interior designers made a particularly notable statement by replacing a feature wall seen upon entry with a laser-cut screen in a pattern the duo designed. The divider separates the foyer from the dining area, where rattan chairs surround a marble-topped table beneath brass-and-glass lighting pendants. “When we selected the dining furniture, we wanted it to be super clean because the screen needed to be the main feature,” Colvin explains. The dining area also displays a large wall photograph of tropical green leaves, one of the prominent hues in the apartment’s color palette. Colvin and Simoes embraced emerald and orange to complement the ocean views and the unit’s oak features, while a mix of luxurious and rustic materials play up the eclectic feel. The look is exemplified in the living area, where they placed pieces like orange suede armchairs, a deep green velvet ottoman and a bronze mirrored coffee table against floor-to-ceiling wood oak wall panels that slide open to reveal a television. Golds and brass, seen predominately on light fixtures throughout the residence, inject an additional sense of glam, countering the earthy feel the owner favors. The powder room, for instance—a space that nods to the client’s Brazilian roots—juxtaposes copper faucets with a banana leaf-print wallcovering and concrete sink. “We wanted to bring in the rough with the fancy,” Colvin says. “It’s an affluent building and apartment, but we knew if we introduced rustic elements, we would achieve an organic luxuriousness.” Layered, textural and wonderfully diverse, the interior designers’ latest project with the homeowner tells a culminating story of years of collaboration and travels. “We kept things eclectic,” Colvin says. “We knew things would be different in this project.”

Left: Between the kitchen and family room, an oil painting by Brazilian artist Margot Janes hangs over a console table with a distinct wood base from Artefacto. The concrete walls are covered in a custom Venetian plaster with a suede finish. Opposite: In the breakfast nook, chairs from Addison House serve as a warm counterpoint to the pale backdrop of white highgloss lacquered cabinetry and Calacatta marble backsplashes and countertops. Counter stools covered in white eco leather surround the kitchen island.

Arcing over the club chair in the family room is Foscarini’s Twiggy floor lamp, designed by Marc Sadler. Leather poufs from Comodino and an Artefacto coffee table surround a slipcovered sofa. The draperies are made of sheer natural linen to leave the sweeping views unencumbered.

Right: A banana leaf-print wallpaper from Eijffinger enlivens the powder room and complements the subtle green tint of the custom-made concrete sink. Above the Signature Hardware copper faucet is a mirror from West Elm hanging from a faux leather strap. Opposite: Da-Vinci Designs built the custom slatted wood paneling, shelves and duelcolor nightstands in the master bedroom. The headboard is upholstered in linen that echoes the tones in the grayand-white bamboo silk rug by Studio Harmony Rugs.
