A Season of Recognition and Celebration
BEHIND EVERY PHOTO YOU SEE IN THIS MAGAZINE, you’ll nd an abundance of design skill, a deftness for listening and empathy, and years of hard work. The nished rooms are simply the last notes of a complex symphony written and painstakingly executed by skilled pros. They make it look effortless, but we know better. In this RED Awards issue, we honor the expertise of the extraordinary designers whose work elevates and improves the way we live. It’s a moment of appreciation for not only the beautiful images at the end, but also for everything that comes before.
What struck me most this year is not only the caliber of talent being celebrated; it is the profound meaning the recognition holds for those honored. We recently hosted events for our LUXE NEXT class of 2026 and our Gold List designers. At each gathering, recipients arrived with a spouse, a parent or a longtime colleague—those who supported them along the way, and those who understand the dedication, risk and perseverance needed to orchestrate beautiful environments. The people selected to be the “plus-ones” indicate that this is more than a professional achievement; it's a personal milestone. We are honored to share the moment.
Ahead, you’ll nd the full list of RED winners and this year has set a remarkable record. More than 2,300 submissions were received—an extraordinary testament to the creativity thriving across the industry. I can assure you that selecting winners has never been more challenging. The level of innovation, originality and brilliance is simply unprecedented.
To our RED Award winners, Gold List honorees, and LUXE NEXT class of 2026, please know that each project was met with admiration from our team. The talent represented in these pages—and across the design community— is nothing short of inspiring.

THREE CHICAGO WOMEN SHAPE ART AND INTERIORS WITH DISTINCT VISION
WRITTEN BY ZLATA KOZUL NAUMOVSKI
PRODUCED BY COLLEEN MC TIERNAN
Celestial Art Curation
Christine Gebauer opened Celestial Art Curation in a historic building in Hinsdale to spotlight Chicago-area artists and provide collectors with a trusted source for original work. Collaborating with local designer Diana Wagenbach of Studio W Interiors, she created a warm, minimalist space in a palette of soft neutrals and marble. “I wanted the gallery to reflect the refined residential spaces where the art will ultimately live,” says Gebauer, herself an artist. On display are Impressionistic, abstract and figurative works by artists such as Maureen Claffy, Jen Diver and Sherman Khan. The gallery also offers photography and prints, vintage decor and artisan gifts. “There is no single style that defines our program,” says Gebauer. “The common thread is presence.” celestialartcuration.com
Issy Wilson
Based in London and Chicago, Issy Wilson practices art that is deeply rooted in the natural world. She is particularly fond of rhizomes, the subterranean plant stems that form complex networks. “My work is an exploration of botanic interconnectedness,” she says. Her paintings evolve by following processes that resist uniformity and experimenting with materials such as ink, charcoal, natural pigments and cotton fibers. “I am constantly observing my surroundings to find interesting ecological moments,” she says. “Ultimately, my work highlights a collaborative relationship between myself, the materials and the environment.” iwilson.art
Drakewell Kitchens & Closets
Interior designer Joy Williams recently founded Drakewell Kitchens & Closets to fill a gap she encountered while designing homes. “I often found that cabinetry was treated as a commodity rather than a design discipline,” she says. “There was a disconnect between aesthetic vision and technical execution.” That gap led her to open a gallery of cabinetry and millwork as precision-engineered as it is visually refined. "Chicago was a deliberate choice since it’s my hometown,” Williams says. "It is one of the most architecturally influential cities in the world, with a client base that values both innovation and craftsmanship.” drakewellkitchensandclosets.com

ALONG WASHINGTON’S HOOD CANAL, A VACATION PROPERTY IS DESIGNED TO MEET THE PASSIONS OF ITS NATURE-LOVING HOMEOWNERS.
WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL
When architect Les Eerkes first visited the wooded site of his clients’ future waterside retreat, “It was immediately clear that the architecture had to embrace the richness of the setting,” he recalls. The owners, avid naturalists, wanted a contemporary, glass-walled structure that offered easy interaction with sea and forest, be it an invigorating swim or foraging for mushrooms. The result, Eerkes notes, is a “house dedicated to the enjoyment of the landscape.” In addition to outdoor lounge areas overlooking the water, there is an alfresco kitchen that accommodates the homeowners’ frequent hosting of family and friends. “I really like to grill, and there’s also a high BTU burner for crab and shrimp boils,” says one of the owners, noting the bounty of seafood right off their beach, including oysters and clams. “There’s a real hunter-gatherer ethos here,” says Eerkes. “This residence is deeply rooted in its place.” eerkesarchitects.com

Pulled from LUXE’s regional features, these refreshingly original outdoor retreats are as distinctive as their locations.

FROM MASSACHUSETTS TO CALIFORNIA TO FLORIDA, THREE SUMMER ESCAPES FEEL AT HOME WITH THEIR SURROUNDINGS.
WRITTEN BY LISA BINGHAM DEWART
Designer David Ries preserved a historic Nantucket cottage’s existing architectural details, opting to refresh its interior by simply painting the woodwork White Dove by Benjamin Moore.

NANTUCKET, MA
“We wanted to create something authentic that felt lived in and loved,” designer David Ries explains of the plan for his clients’ shingled 1930s guest cottage on Nantucket. He began by painting the walls, ceilings and baseboards white and restoring the hardwood floors, allowing their rich reddish-brown finish to remain intact. The latter “creates a great anchor for the home, and when it gets chillier and foggier, it’s a warm base,” he notes. For the furnishings, Ries chose a mix of vintage and new pieces, many in shades of blue and green. “It feels like it was curated over time and melds beautifully with the existing architecture,” he says, pointing to finds ranging from the living room’s antique Spanish chest and midcentury Jan Vanek armchairs to a Saarinen table in the dining area. For the bedrooms, he opted for consistency and adaptability. “Some of the bedrooms have the same spindle beds with striped linen bed coverings, while others have beautiful rattan chairs, giving you the flexibility to move things around.” Ries chose to weave in quintessential local touches as well: A Nantucket basket and piece of driftwood serve as sculptures atop a coffee table with a Karl Springer base, while the sea and landscape prints are by a local artist who also happens to be the cottage’s caretaker. “It was almost as if the house told us what it wanted,” Ries says. “We knew the setting and the bones, which helped us to understand exactly what we needed to do.” rieshayes.com

MONTECITO, CA
Over the years, architect Ryan Street’s Texas-based clients spent many a sun-kissed summer at Montecito’s San Ysidro Ranch, where board-and-batten bungalows nestle into lushly planted grounds. Eager to capture the iconic hotel’s spirit for themselves, the couple—the husband is a landscape architect and frequent collaborator of Street’s, and the wife is an interior designer—found the perfect property nearby featuring a pool, tennis court and a 1940s cottage with a board-and-batten exterior of its own. Although the site could support a much larger dwelling, the homeowners opted to renovate instead. “They wanted to come here to live as simply as possible. Everything is smallscale; the color palette is minimal, and serenity is the theme,” Street says of their vision. “Nothing but the essentials was the rule.” He retained the interior flooring but significantly revamped everything else, repositioning the kitchen and reconfiguring the bedrooms. There are new architectural details, including a built-in bookcase in the living area, a space the wife appointed with shapely furniture in warm creams, taupes and caramels. Other fresh elements are intended to encourage interaction with the property: a latticework screen on a bedroom window draws the eye outside, as do additional doors and windows. “The bungalow turns into a place where you just sleep and cook,” Street explains, noting the home doesn’t have a dining room—meals are enjoyed alfresco on a terrace, in keeping with the San Ysidro lifestyle. “The space functions as a support system for enjoying the garden and being in Montecito.” ryanstreet.com

ANNA MARIA ISLAND, FL
For designer Anissa Zajac’s clients, comfort was paramount for their Anna Maria Island, Florida, vacation home. “They didn’t wish for anything flashy,” Zajac, the owner of House Seven Design, recalls. “Instead, they wanted their kids to be able to come in from the beach and lie on the sofa and watch movies.” Additionally, the homeowners requested that she forgo the usual Florida beach house flourishes, meaning no palm tree motifs, mother-of-pearl or seashells. That’s not to say the designer didn’t draw from the locale, though. The home’s cream, taupe, blue and green color palette chromatically echoes the grass, sand, sea and sky just outside. Coastalworthy details are also present, like the crisp white tongue-and-groove paneling that Zajac selected for much of the interior. Overall, “There are just a handful of materials used in different ways to create a cohesive vibe,” she notes, pointing to both the linen that primarily covers the seating and a series of rope fixtures that cast light throughout the house. Raffia wallcoverings, wood finishes and lamps made of stone also make appearances. “We stuck with things that felt organic and used a lot of natural elements,” the designer explains. Outside, the house similarly engages with its beachfront setting thanks to sandy tones, louvered shutters and balconies framed with slim railings. Even the home’s pool was color-matched to the ocean’s crystal-blue hue, another decision among many that has yielded a relaxed, inviting family abode. housesevendesign.com

FOR DESIGNER VICENTE WOLF, WATER LEADS THE WAY WHEN CRAFTING SEASIDE HOMES.
WRITTEN BY JENNIFER BOLES
When designing residences by the water, Vicente Wolf almost always accentuates the aquatic landscape through color, mood or sometimes even both, as exemplified by his clients’ Hamptons property along Mecox Bay. A once mundane structure with overly compartmentalized rooms, Wolf updated the home by streamlining its floor plan, banishing unnecessary ornamentation and appointing the interior primarily in white, because “water always brings up feelings of lightness,” the designer notes. A desire for unimpeded views of the picturesque outdoor scenery also factored into his color choice, explaining, “Wherever you look from within a space, you should see the setting, and white is the best way to do that.”
Naturally, Wolf incorporated blue hues to emphasize the nearby bay views, but he
concentrated on a multitude of shades ranging from light to dark. “When you’re by the water, you only see the surface, but it’s the depth below that gives it bravado,” he says, a sentiment echoed in the inky blue wallcovering he employed to envelop the home’s study. The living room’s pale grayish-blue ottoman and lightly shaded rug, on the other hand, reflect the bay’s shimmering surface.
Color selections aside, the home’s relaxed atmosphere might be most indicative of its waterside perch. “It’s what a beach house should be. It’s about casual living,” Wolf says, pointing to the abundance of upholstered seating as well as the kitchen’s easyto-access open shelving as evidence. “If you have guests staying with you, you want everyone to feel like it’s their home, too.” vicentewolf.com

THE ROMANCE OF THE CLASSIC COPPER GAS LANTERN REMAINS A TOUCHSTONE FOR DESIGNERS IN EVERY ERA.
WRITTEN BY SARAH SHELTON
There is something special about a home that’s aglow with gas lanterns. The live, ickering ames impart a sense of literal and metaphorical warmth, a welcoming beacon of hospitality. While some may view outdoor lighting as an afterthought, for Atlanta-based designer Anna Booth, illuminating the exterior makes a heartening rst impression, as seen with the numerous copper xtures that adorn the façade of this newly built stone estate in Georgia. “It’s comforting to live with a material like copper that patinas over time—it helps you relax,” the designer says. “There’s a grounding feeling of permanence when you select products that are meant to last.”
The innovation of gas lighting transformed cities in the early 19th century, and it is historic companies like Bevolo Gas & Electric Lights that are ensuring the tradition of crafting this type of lighting is carried into the future. For Booth’s project, the many lanterns were handmade at Bevolo’s New Orleans
headquarters—as are all of their pieces. “Copper is elegant and resilient; it ages visibly, recording time, turning each xture into a one-of-a-kind architectural element,” remarks Drew Bevolo, the family-run company’s third-generation owner. “The enduring appeal of our lanterns lies in what modern technology often leaves behind: legacy, presence and soul.”
Founded in 1945 by Drew’s grandfather, Andrew Bevolo Sr., the brand continues to honor the past by using traditional tools, processes and their signature Americanmined copper, while still offering customizable designs that keep pace with the times, which now include electric and stainless-steel options. But don’t expect them to chase trends anytime soon. “Bevolo lanterns provide not just illumination but atmosphere. We create tomorrow’s antiques—lighting that not only belongs to a home or place, but to time itself.”

The rugs—ideal for indoor or covered outdoor areas—are durable and whimsical. Meanwhile, the line’s spirited wallpapers bring the fun inside, ensuring a sweet life, indeed. perennialsfabrics.com

Known for eclectic, personalitydriven design, Thom Filicia never shies away from creative selections. In the renovation of his own Sag Harbor abode, this manifested in a glamorous bar inspired by locale. With a mix of textures Filicia calls “a little risky,” the slightly eccentric space welcomes the beginning and the end of nights entertaining in.
A longtime TileBar client, Filicia combed through dozens of slab and wall tile collections before landing on two selections. To make your own tile discoveries, visit TileBar online or find a showroom near you.
“I like mixing tile and slabs, and combining them in a way that feels consistent and tailored rather than contrasting.”

A VISIONARY VIEWPOINT
WITH NEW RH DESIGN GALLERIES IN PARIS, MILAN AND (SHORTLY) LONDON, THE ALL-AMERICAN BRAND CONTINUES TO EXPAND.
WRITTEN
BY
MARY JO BOWLING
The tale of how CEO Gary Friedman brought RH to Europe is no less than Dickensian in scale. Within the span of nine months, the brand will have opened design galleries in Paris, Milan and (in June) London—a feat Friedman says would be notable if it all unfolded in nine years. These new outposts offer more than furniture, they encompass restaurants, bars and even libraries holding rare architectural tomes.
“They might be the most original, inspiring and immersive consumer experiences in the world,” he observes.
In describing the effort, Friedman frequently references the talents of his team. But what might cause Charles Dickens, the
master of rags-to-riches sagas such as David Copperfield, to take notice is the CEO’s own story. Friedman grew up poor in Sonoma, California, and struggled with a reading disorder. Later, he dropped out of community college. “People thought I was dumb and treated me that way,” he says. But what his
detractors didn’t know is that Friedman has an eye, and it turned out to be a golden one.
“I saw the world in a certain way, and I knew what I liked,” he explains.
Fast forward several years and up the ladder at iconic American brands (Gap, Williams-Sonoma) to Friedman’s first trip
“ The architectural beauty of Europe was the first thing that hit me. The structures are balanced and symmetrical, and that made sense to me—it made a lasting impression.”
GARY FRIEDMAN
to Europe at age 35 (a Paris work venture), when a seed was planted. “The architectural beauty of Europe was the first thing that hit me,” he says. “The structures are balanced and symmetrical, and that made sense to me—it made a lasting impression.” The visionary vowed to one day do something in these extraordinary places.
The opening of this trio of design galleries in the style capitals of the world is when Friedman truly made good on his promise. The Milan and London galleries are in historic buildings, and the Paris venue lies behind archaic, nationally protected gates.
All three are fantastically reimagined with the help of London-based Foster + Partners, and they embody the core RH ethos.
“Everything we design—buildings, products, experiences—is done through the lens of architecture,” Friedman notes. “We are obsessed with it.”
Every good Dickens-style story ends with a zinger from a plucky character, and this one is no different. When asked what he would say to his early detractors at this moment of achievement, Friedman offers a simple reply: “Thank you for the motivation.” rh.com
Italian Ascent
RH Milan (below), the brand’s first gallery in Italy, is situated in a neoclassical palazzo on Corso Venezia. Behind the 1880s façade, visitors will find a library of rare design books; La Volta, the brand’s first below-ground restaurant; and an interior design studio. Throughout are RH furniture and accessory collections, including the debut of RH Estates, pieces with a classic aesthetic conceived through a contemporary lens.

DESIGN FINDS: CELEBRATE SUMMER
As the days get longer and the light grows warmer, one can’t help but celebrate summer. In the realm of design, a few elements tend to speak to this season of joy—indoor-outdoor flow, vibrant colors and coastal motifs often top that list. Just ask Melissa Denys. She and her team at Melissa Denys Interiors operate out of Evanston, Illinois, and serve residential clients on the North Shore and throughout downtown Chicago. Given the dramatic winter landscapes this region is known for, it comes as little surprise that when summer rolls around, MDI’s clients are ready to embrace it. Happily for all involved, Denys knows just where to turn when she’s ready to source new textiles, furnishings, accessories and materials for summer-forward projects: THE MART. Whether designing a transitional or modern space, a kitchen or mudroom, Denys strives to bring the client’s personality and way of life into every environment. “I provide luxury residential design that finely balances aesthetics and function, with all of it being informed by the homeowner,” she

says. When seasonal inspirations are at play too, the sourcing needs are complex. But THE MART delivers. From stone and tile to rugs to furniture to lighting fixtures, the center has showrooms for it all, inviting design pros and their clients to discover the world’s foremost brands in all things home in-person. “There is something transformative about the tactile experience you can have in these showrooms,” Denys enthuses. “The sample library is immense, a nd THE MART on the whole creates an exciting, creatively energizing experience for its visitors.” With the warmest time of year top of mind, Denys chose a few selections she has her eye on for summer updates. “These pieces would be great for a client who wants to embrace subtle color, texture and an overall layered look,” she says. “I envisioned a casual vibe with some whimsy potentially a coastal home or pool house.” Either way, THE MART offers each of these selections and more, encouraging the trade and homeowners alike to keep dreaming up inventive, inspiring spaces.
THE MART encompasses 3.7 million square feet, spans two city blocks, rises 25 stories and is visited by an average of 30,000 people each business day. An icon since the 1930s, it is Chicago’s home for inspiration and the best of everything design has to offer under one massive roof.

CALIFORNIA DREAMING
DESIGNER CHLOE REDMOND WARNER EVOKES AN OCEAN ATMOSPHERE FOR A FAMILY HOME IN STINSON BEACH.
WRITTEN BY LAUREN GALLOW
photo: matthew millman. styling: yedda morrison.
In a Stinson Beach home designed by Chloe Redmond Warner, the sounds and smells of the ocean loom large courtesy of massive Fleetwood Windows & Doors sliders. A slatted oak dining set by Horne blends with the exterior wood siding, allowing the ocean views to be the focal point.
Arriving to Stinson Beach after the short but windy drive from San Francisco is a feeling akin to taking a deep breath. Interior designer Chloe Redmond Warner knows the feeling well. After renting a house there during the pandemic, she quickly fell in love with the close-knit community and has since designed interiors for several homes in the area, including this new vacation home by architect Eric Davies.
“The clients wanted the house to feel happy for their three young kids,” recalls Warner, whose new debut book, This Must Be the Place (Abrams), dedicates a chapter to this little slice of paradise. “And not pretentious or overly elegant.” The designer’s solution was to lean into the laid-back, indoor-outdoor living that makes the locale so special. The house frames an open deck with views to the ocean, and when the glass sliders are open, the living area flows seamlessly from inside to out.
Beach-house friendly polished concrete floors balance the riftsawn oak paneling on the interior walls, which evoke a midcentury California coastal cabin feel. To allow the beachy views to be the star, Warner layered the interior with rich, neutral colors and warm, organic textures. Antique rugs, chairs in leather and wood, and accents of bronze throughout keep the open living area feeling grounded and connected to the outside. Kitchen cabinets in a terra-cotta hue offer personality while still acting as a neutral complement to the wood walls.
Whether working on a puzzle in the dining area with the windows open or cozying into the built-in banquette next to the fireplace on a cold evening, the house offers the perfect beach refuge. “There’s a glow and a hush to the house,” says Warner. “When the doors open, you smell the very Stinson scent of salt water, fog and sage. It’s amazing.” redmondaldrich.com
A Lawson-Fenning game table and De La Espada dining table anchor the main living space. In the kitchen, cabinets painted Red Earth by Farrow & Ball complement Calacatta Viola marble countertops from IRG Stone, as do leather-and-wood bar chairs by Thomas Hayes Studio. Warner’s new book, This Must Be the Place, elucidates the designer’s intuitive, layered approach to crafting interior atmospheres.

ROOTED IN INNOVATION AND DRIVEN BY A PASSION for elevating the way people live, CI Design + Build is a fully integrated design-build rm rede ning the renovation experience through its comprehensive Turnkey Solution. What began in the late 1990s as Principal Michael Miller building single-family homes as a general contractor evolved in 2009 into a streamlined design-build practice that expanded in 2016 to include furnishings and art; creating a true single-source model. Drawing on Miller’s background in mechanical engineering and a commitment to eliminating the cost overruns and frustrations typical of traditional construction, the rm delivers a seamless, concierge-level process from initial concept through construction, furnishing, art curation and white-glove move-in services. The result is a fully completed home that is designed, built and styled with intention, allowing clients to step into an elevated, deeply personal space without the stress of managing multiple teams.

SEAMLESS BY DESIGN
Michael Miller reflects on his firm’s evolution, his philosophy of innovation and the distinctive, client-centered Turnkey Solution that makes CI Design + Build a true industry leader.
How did CI Design + Build evolve into the firm it is today? I began in the late 1990s building custom homes and undertaking renovations as a general contractor. I quickly saw how fragmented teams and budget overruns created stress for clients. In 2009, we transitioned into a true design-build firm so that we could centralize responsibility. By 2016, we added furnishings and art, completing our fully integrated Turnkey Solution model.
What makes the Turnkey Solution so unique? Because we guide the journey and provide one accountable team for design, construction, furnishings and art, our clients don’t manage multiple vendors. On move-in day, the home is complete and ready to live in. We also offer a one-year concierge service for total peace of mind.
Share the philosophy that guides your approach. We start by understanding how our clients want to live and the “why” behind their decisions. Every home reflects their identity and supports wellness. At CI Design + Build, we believe that good design should feel timeless, intentional, vital and deeply personal.
Describe a true turning point. Shifting from general contracting to design-build transformed our practice. It allowed us to eliminate common frustrations and build a more refined, client-focused experience that is rooted in trust.
How do you define good design? Good design aligns architecture, interiors and construction with lifestyle. It anticipates needs and enhances how clients will live, work, play and create lasting memories in their homes.
What sets CI apart? Our level of detail and execution is what truly sets us apart. From concealed elements to precise alignments, everything has purpose. Combined with disciplined budgeting and scheduling, we deliver a turnkey experience clients can rely on and enjoy.

ANNIKA VALDISERRI, REAL ESTATE ADVISOR
312.504.5020 | atproperties.com | annikavaldo
THE ACT OF MOVING to a different country and exploring a new city to call home can be one of immense creative inspiration. It certainly was for Annika Valdiserri, who moved to Chicago from Sweden some years ago and has been in love with the city ever since. Today, as a Real Estate Advisor with @properties Christie’s International Real Estate, the number-one brand in Chicagoland, she works the city to the shore, understanding the unique aspects of each area. “Having moved across the Atlantic, I think I have an ability to see that we all come from different paths and are in need of different outcomes when it comes to real estate,” Valdiserri says. “Listening and understanding my clients’ goals, wants and needs is at the heart of what I do.” Upon being asked what her future goals are, Valdiserri’s answer reveals the passion that shines through in each transaction. “The goal is to keep having fun, to grow with my clients and to learn something new every day.”
“I am energized by the love of new— new properties, buildings, clients, prospects and travel!”
Alternate Career
If she weren’t in real estate, what would Valdiserri be up to? “I would probably be in fashion,” she enthuses. “I love how people style and create so much of their identity through clothes. It has always been a passion for me. I started importing a Swedish brand to the U.S. with a fellow Swede, and everyone is always asking me where I bought the pieces. This turned into a journey where we explored how people saw themselves in the clothes we were offering and, eventually, that curiosity to understand individuals led to real estate.”
Kind Wins
For Valdiserri, kindness has always been a guidepost. “My parents shaped me to be kind, stay true to myself, be adventurous and work hard for what I believe in,” she shares. “When Merry Juell, who is the best of the best, approached me 20 years ago from a small boutique real estate firm in Wilmette, she showed me that real estate was about people—it takes hard work but also honesty and kindness as you help clients find that special place to call home.”
Wonderous Workday
Real estate is a profession that demands flexibility and availability, which often requires a certain personality type to be enjoyed. Whatever it is, Valdiserri has it in spades. “The beauty of my workday is that one is not like the other,” she says. “I can have showing appointments, help with staging and be there for inspections, appraisals, closings, negotiations, the video and photo shoots. Many days I take and make phone calls to calm, help and explain. It is a constant fluency, but never the same.”

IN DESIGN, lasting influence comes from crafting spaces with clarity, empathy and command of the process. Katie Malone, Owner of KM Interiors, has built that kind of credibility through a client-centered practice that is shaped by years of studying interior design and architecture in college, then spending a decade at a corporate firm before launching her own business. “What sets KM Interiors apart is the way we listen, communicate across teams and deliver spaces that feel personal, polished and purposeful—an approach that guides us from start to finish,” Malone says. “A successful project tells a story that truly reflects the client, while allowing a space to shine both functionally and aesthetically.” That belief drives the deeper problem-solving behind her designs, with real-life needs always in view. Malone shares, “Making a space look good is easy, but making it work is the real challenge.”
“I find great joy in helping families create homes where they can build lasting memories.”
Creative Calling
Malone’s design path began in sixth grade, when she was chosen as “the architect” for her bridgebuilding team. After studying interior design and architecture at Miami University, she cultivated her skills in corporate interiors at Partners by Design, where Malone says, “I learned the importance of teamwork, communication and understanding the client’s needs.”
Perfectly Lived
For Malone, great design begins with seeing how clients truly live. Her people-first mindset and perfectionist’s eye drive her to create spaces that are polished yet practical. Malone explains, “I believe the first phase of design is the most important, because getting to know each client is what makes a space uniquely theirs.” Looking ahead, that philosophy will guide KM Interiors as it gr ows through residential and commercial projects.
A Delicate Balance
“At KM Interiors, we are expert multi-taskers,” Malone explains. “Any given workday includes drawing elevations, gathering inspiration, space planning, procurement, design meetings and construction site walkthroughs. I am also a mom to three kids, so there are days when I have to go teach an art enrichment class or be the mystery reader at my children’s schools. Raising humans and owning a business is no easy task, so I work hard to create a strong work-life balance each and every day.”

Created for a sporty family that loves to entertain, the space pairs striking black cabinetry with sleek stone countertops for a bold and refined look, while soaring 14-foot ceilings and oversized pendants complete the room, filling it with light and amplifying its sense of drama. FOR SOME CREATIVE SOULS, one outlet for their boundless drive to envision and invent isn’t enough. Just ask Sarah Kuchar-Parkinson. Growing up with an artistic mother, she had an innate desire to work in a creative field. After taking an interior design class in college, she fell in love with the field and soon got after it. Today, she owns her firm, Kuchar, but its structure ensures that variety remains the spice. “We are a multimarket studio, so we work on private residences, offices, restaurants and more,” Kuchar-Parkinson says. “This creates unique spaces that influence each other.” The Kuchar team is also known for pushing industry trends in color and pattern to envision spaces that feel new and f resh. Speaking of innovating, Kuchar-Parkinson notes that this is just what keeps her energized. “When my design team creates something risky and I know we are doing something new and exciting, I feel energized,” she says. “I also enjoy getting project inquiries for something we haven’t done before—I love a challenge!”
“ Our aim is for the work to be colorful, exciting and blend various materials.”
Advancing Together
Kuchar-Parkinson talks mentors, inspirations and the future of women in the making of home. “I always looked up to and was inspired by leaders who walked-the-walk,” she says. “My mentors were the ones who were in the trenches with us young designers. They taught me to have a strong ethic and low ego.” These days, fellow designer Patricia Urquiola serves as a major influence.
“She is my North Star,” Kuchar-Parkinson says. “Her use of color and form in everything she designs is beautiful, unique and special. I think she constantly sets trends in interiors and product design alike.” The future of women in the field inspires, too. “I predict women in our industry growing in the trades,” she says. “I see more women getting involved in the construction and fabrication trades, especially in leadership or ownership.”
Goal Getter
What’s next in mind for Kuchar-Parkinson? “My biggest studio goal is to design products that fit the type of interiors we design,” she says. “We would love to create furniture and light fixtures for some of our favorite manufacturers.”

FOR MORE THAN TWO DECADES, Lakesha Rose, Principal of L Rose Interior Design, has built a reputation for thoughtful leadership and intentional luxury interiors. Her full-service designbuild firm guides projects from architectural concept through final installation, blending aesthetic vision with technical expertise rooted in construction and detailing. “Every detail is considered, executed and delivered with intention, resulting in timeless interiors that resonate long after completion,” she says. “We’re shaping how people live and experience their homes.” At the core of her approach is emotionally intelligent design—layered, curated environments that balance proportion, texture, flow and restraint— homes that feel powerful yet personal. Equally meaningful to Rose is the camaraderie among women in design, who share knowledge and celebrate progress. “The future for women in design feels limitless,” she says.
“ If I can create a sense of sanctuary and quiet joy for my clients, then I have done my job well.”
Rose Shares Her…
Mentors: My greatest influences were personal. My mother is the blueprint for my discipline and endurance. She worked full-time, raised our family and took night classes to earn her college degree. Watching her walk across that stage taught me that excellence is quiet, consistent and earned in the margins. Professionally, my husband inspires me with principled leadership. His decades-long career earned respect through integrity and how he treated people. Whenever I question where I want to aspire, he is the only person I seek counsel from. His guidance is a significant reason L Rose Interior Design has endured and evolved.
Icons: I admire women who built legacies, like B. Smith and Bunny Williams. True pioneers and tastemakers, their work pairs aesthetic mastery with generosity. What resonates most with B. Smith is the understanding that hospitality is an extension of design. I don’t simply love interiors, I love the full experience of how people gather within them.
Dream Project: I dream of designing a boutique hotel that embodies everything I believe about living beautifully. Every element—from linens to lighting to scent—would feel intentional, layered and emotionally resonant. The experience would be as personal and elevated as a private home; a space guests cannot wait to wake up in or return to at night.
Inspiration: Axel Vervoordt, McAlpine House and Bradley E. Heppner inspire me with restraint, proportion and soul. Their work feels storied, purposeful and immersive. Some cry at weddings, I cry at perfectly executed architectural elevations.

LENORE WEISS, Founder of Lenore Weiss Studios, leads a small but mighty team of architects and designers who approach projects holistically, where architecture and interiors come together, organically. Guided by what Weiss calls “Anthro-tecture,” the firm always considers how the spaces they create affect the people who occupy them. “Simplified, our homes not only look beautiful, but they inherently feel good,” she says. Drawing on decades of experience and an academic foundation in psychology, interior design and architecture, Weiss crafts environments that inspire, function with intention and bring out the best in those who inhabit them. Her team’s attention to quality and detail builds lasting trust with clients, fostering more award-worthy work. Passionate about the future of women in design, Weiss hopes emerging professionals continue to succeed based on the merit of their work, talent and creativity.
“ With ae sthetics as the outward expression of our work, our ‘internal’ approach transcends trends for meaningful results.”
Mentors Meet Icon
Mentors: “My parents were my greatest mentors—each with their own unique approach to the world. My father was a consummate role model for professional and personal integrity. The behavior he modeled throughout his life resulted in the respect he earned in return from everyone who knew him.”
Ultimate Female Icon: “American architect Jeanne Gang, who fearlessly broke the mold for modern architects in her bold and unabashedly unique approach to design.”
Weiss 2.0
When asked what profession she would choose if she weren’t an architect, Weiss shared that she’d be an anthropologist. “I’d be sailing around the world, feeding my insatiable curiosity about how people live and interact with their environmnents. I would then record my findings in my artwork, particularly watercolors, my favorite medium.”
A Global Lens
Weiss was lucky enough to be an exchange student for a year studying abroad in architecture school. “Being based in Versailles under the umbrella of the École des Beaux-Arts taught me to see the world through curious and critical design eyes. We learned to sketch our surroundings throughout Europe (and beyond) as a method of analysis, which I’ve carried with me through life. That skill has become a major communication tool to express my design ideas graphically. My love of travel still gives me a thrill and inspires me like nothing else!”

BETWEEN HER FATHER’S PASSION for learning and travel and a mom with a just-do-it attitude, there was nowhere to go but up for Mary Pat Wallace, Founder of The Luxury Bed Collection. Starting her career with one of her favorite female icons, Holly Hunt, furthered the momentum, teaching her quality craftsmanship, relationship building with vendors and clients, how to pivot when needed and how to support a team. Wallace applied these lessons to improving the luxury sleep experience, believing the bedroom shapes health, happiness and productivity. “Your bed is the piece of furniture you use most, delivering ROI in wellness,” she says. The Luxury Bed Collection provides personalized sleep education and experiences with Hästens and Vispring beds, guiding clients to the right bed, size and tension that ensure uncompromised comfort. “Our passion is to change lives with great sleep, one client at a time,” Wallace says.
“For women in design, the industry is your oyster with unlimited opportunities.”

GREAT DESIGN LEADERS have the ability to envision how spaces function at their core. As President of TRESSS® Aquatectural Designs, Cecilia Alvarez-Heard is redefining water as a structural, year-round architectural system rather than a seasonal luxury. Leading with an engineering-first mindset, she is advancing Movable Pool Floor technology that transforms a singular architectural plane into a convertible environment designed to meet the highest standards of safety and structural integrity. “We engineer convertible aquatic systems that allow a single footprint to function as both water feature and usable deck surface—preserving foundational strength, safety and architectural integrity,” Alvarez-Heard says. “My work prioritizes ASTM-rated protection, load-bearing precision and energy efficiency, ensuring that architecture and water coexist in high-performance residential spaces designed for long-term adaptability.”
“Design is not only abo ut vision; it is about responsibility.”
Design With Discipline
Bridging creative ambition with rigorous execution, Alvarez-Heard’s leadership model prioritizes precision, accountability and long-term vision. “What makes this work so meaningful to me is that it operates at the intersection of engineering, manufacturing, business strategy and design,” she shares. “My focus has always been on building systems that are technically sound, financially disciplined and architecturally intentional.”
Rooted Leadership
Born in Mexico and shaped by resilience and ambition, Alvarez-Heard credits her early values for her strong foundation. “Leadership is not compartmentalized,” she states. “It is a rhythm where faith, family, business and discipline strengthen one another.” That personal conviction informs both her company’s culture and the convictions she upholds.
Future Standard
Alvarez-Heard envisions an expansive path ahead for women in design; one grounded in authority and capability. “What I would like to see is ongoing advancement of women in positions of authority, as founders, technical experts, decision-makers and investors. Not as a statement, but as a standard,” she explains. Her work ethos models that future—technical, strategic and unapologetically innovative.

Early in the planning for this new Highland Park home, the homeowners called an emergency meeting with the design team, including architect Celeste Robbins, who had been drafting a clean-lined house for the empty-nester clients. She and interior designer Andrea Goldman were shocked when the husband pushed the existing plans to the middle of the table and declared, “You’ve made a beautiful painting, but we need a better canvas.”
The husband and wife were smitten with Robbins’ early vision for a modern steel-and-glass home that connected to the landscape, but they realized their chosen site, a 2.5-acre landlocked parcel, wouldn’t let her design shine. “They were so excited about the prospect of what the home could be, so they wanted to find a new property,” says Robbins. She helped the couple land on a different site, directly on Lake Michigan, that would suit her design for a ranch-style home with sweeping walls of glass overlooking the water.
“The new site was very different, so Celeste kept the modern design but started from the beginning with the layout because we really wanted to highlight the lake,” explains the husband. “We also have a large extended family—at major holidays, we’re at 30 people,” he adds. The design needed to accommodate these large family gatherings but also live small for their daily household of two.
Robbins answered these needs with an H-shaped plan centered around a large, transparent great room, with the primary suite extending from one side and a guest bedroom wing from the other. Off the kitchen, a sunroom opens at both corners to a grassy lawn, a pool deck and the lake beyond. “We’re kind of inside and outside
at once,” says the husband. “On a nice day, the transition from inside to outside is easy and quite special.”
Glass expanses throughout enhance this visual connection with the landscape. “We introduced moments of ribbed glass as well as mullions that create an interesting pattern in the windows,” the architect explains. “Rather than being regular and symmetrical, the patterns are more like a piece of music. It creates a different edge between nature and the structure.” The husband agrees. “The lake is organic, and so is the house,” he notes.
Inside, Goldman built on Robbins’ ethos of creating a modern feel that was also livable and approachable. “We knew they wanted something warm and layered,” says the interior designer. “They were not looking to create a showpiece, but rather something comfortable and inviting—a place where the family could come together for holidays, or for a Friday night pizza party.” Incorporating outdoor fabrics and rugs for the primary living areas helps the home stand up to plenty of foot traffic, while a neutral palette and modern lines bring an elevated sophistication. Low-profile lighting in the living areas supplies an artfulness without distracting from the views, underscoring the home’s guiding principle: refinement that’s far from fussy, for the furniture and fixtures alike. “A few pieces are a bit more precious, but in general, this is a house where you can be in any space in a swimsuit and it will still live well,” notes Goldman.
In the end, the house has become a new home base for the couple and their extended family. “It’s very comfortable for just two people, but it also works as the focal point for our family gatherings,” says the husband. “We love just watching the lake change over the course of the day as the clouds move through and sailboats go by. You never get tired of Lake Michigan.”

HOUSE RULES
WITH A NEW BUILD IN ELMHURST, STUDIO W REWRITES THE BLUEPRINT FOR MODERN FAMILY LIVING.
WRITTEN BY KATHRYN
O’SHEA-EVANS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN MCDONALD | STYLING BY NATALIE MAROTTA
To the uninitiated, designing a house from the ground up can seem as deceptively straightforward as a game of Lincoln Logs: plan, stack, repeat. But the most successful projects leave ample room for evolution, and this family’s new home is proof.
The couple had purchased two neighboring properties in Elmhurst, with plans to demolish the existing houses and merge the lots.
Architect John Belcher and contractor Randy Hoekstra already had the floor plans for the new build in hand when designer Diana Wagenbach entered the picture, but the project was still early enough that she could shape the bones of the house in meaningful ways. “We made some really significant edits to the floor plan from the originally proposed drawings to what ended up happening, which was great,” she says.
The resulting home unfolds like a contemporary ranch—albeit a sprawling, highly polished one—with the main living spaces and primary suite on the main level, a basement below and a smaller upstairs zone for children’s bedrooms and bathrooms. It creates a “thoughtful flow that supports both everyday routines and moments of gathering,” Wagenbach says.
From the start, the designer’s goal was to strike a balance between the elegance the clients envisioned and everyday practicality. The challenge, she says, was “How are we going to piece this together to make sense of the space so that they have privacy, but also check all the boxes of it being beautiful and having a great entertaining space?”
One of her earliest moves was relocating the primary suite to its own wing on the side of the house near the stairs that lead to the children’s rooms, creating a sense of retreat while still maintaining
close access to the kids and a connection to the home’s living spaces. Meanwhile, the back portion of the house became a workhorse, containing the mudroom, laundry room and other practical spaces near the garage for functionality.
Those prosaic spaces didn’t lack for personality, though. The laundry, originally drawn as little more than a corridor, was expanded into a proper room. Then Wagenbach added a feature that feels delightfully old-school: a laundry chute from the upstairs kids’ bathroom. “The idea of a laundry chute just feels like something that’s not being used as much anymore,” she says, yet it’s both efficient and charming.
In the kitchen, function and flair intertwine just as neatly. The island became another moment for creative problem-solving. Rather than accept the natural limitations of stone slab sizes, which tend to max out at 140 inches long, Wagenbach introduced a two-material design, pairing the massive stone portion with butcher block to create a larger, more flexible work surface.
“It felt like a fun way to bring in another texture to make it feel intentional, versus having these seamed approaches, which is just not my favorite,” Wagenbach says.
Color plays a role as well, though in restrained doses. The island’s ebonized wood anchors a palette otherwise defined by warm neutral paint and fabrics, ivory plaster and pale oak. “The vibe in general was very natural, but warm and welcoming,” Wagenbach says. Architectural details such as the white oak box beams breaking up the soaring ceilings reinforce the calm, textural effect that is different, yet familiar enough to feel homey. The homeowners seem to agree. When they recently took Wagenbach out to dinner to celebrate the finished project, their verdict was simple. “They told me, ‘It’s more than we dreamed of,’” she says. “And that’s why we do it.”

DESIGNERS LISA JOHNSON AND LAURA PROBST REIMAGINE A HOME THAT HAS STOOD FOR MORE THAN A CENTURY, REIGNITING ITS YOUTHFUL SPARK.
WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANE BEILES | STYLING BY JENNIFER DECLEENE

Even though stately homes are plentiful in Winnetka—founded in 1869—this shingle-style residence has a special presence. Constructed back when the village served as a breezy weekend escape for Chicagoans, the 1899 house sits on a generous lot just blocks from Lake Michigan. Time and previous owners were kind to the dwelling, and it is filled with original details and the kind of patina only several generations of inhabitants can bestow. The new owners wanted to preserve and respect that history while subtly reshaping the house for modern life. “Their goal was to create a family home that lives like a retreat,” notes interior designer Lisa Johnson, who worked on the project in partnership with Laura Probst. “They wanted it to be a place where easy, effortless entertaining could happen.”
Architect Sarah Gooden knows these North Shore grande dames well and considers them a specialty. But this, one of the oldest structures in the area, required a particularly thoughtful and considerate touch. “The big gabled roof with gracious deep eaves,
and its intact interior features, such as dentil molding and pocket doors, make it special,” she says. “With its classic lines and presence, the home stands out.”
Gooden and her team, including general contractor Thomas Kenny, worked hard to protect and enhance the more storied architectural qualities of the residence, but they removed a newer feature: a long structure at the back of the house, with an indoor pool, that blocked both circulation and views of the lake. Eliminating it was a game-changer. “By demolishing that feature, we made room for something incredibly special,” she says.

Previous page: An octagonal Ironware International table and a light fixture by The Urban Electric Co. set the tone in the foyer. The library has a Baker ottoman and armchairs and a rug by Patterson Flynn.
Indeed, that addition by subtraction now steals the show: Gooden designed what she and the team call the “clubhouse,” a gabled structure connected to the main residence by an enclosed passage. Here, there’s a cozy living area, a golf simulator and an expansive bar complete with dual beer taps for game days. Oversize folding doors allow the space to open fully to a patio, pool, pickleball court and garden by landscaper Bruce Everly. “This is a wonderful place for the family to hang out,” says Gooden. “You can go outside and play, sit at the bar and watch sports on television or see people trying their hand at the golf simulator.” Johnson and Probst leaned into the convivial spirit by outfitting the space in the style of a golf-course clubhouse. “This is largely the husband’s space, so we were envisioning a gentleman’s lounge,” Probst says.
That sense of warmth also permeates the original home. “Although the historical details were there, one of the main challenges was the size of the rooms,” says Johnson. “They were painted white, and their large scale made them feel a bit hollow and somewhat unwelcoming.” The solution was to select a material palette that was inviting in both color and feel. “An intentional layering of textures was chosen to
make the spaces feel intimate and welcoming,” Johnson says. “For example, in the dining room, we upholstered the walls with a cream-and-taupe-colored fabric.”
The library, situated just off the entry, serves as what Johnson describes as a “debriefing room”—a place for the owners to meet after work to discuss the day. When they entertain, the room pivots from quiet retreat to lively gathering spot (a freestanding cabinet holds a bar).
Indeed, the polished new rooms are ready for gatherings large and small. “You can use every space easily,” notes Probst. “They directly reflect the people who live here.” Now 127 years old, this home is proof: Sometimes the longer you live, the better you learn to live well.

EXPERIENCE THE MAGIC OF MIDWEST WATERFRONT LIVING
Life on the lake is a culture unto itself, and the design world has long taken note. Step inside the unique aesthetics, building techniques and lifestyle elements of this storied setting.
“THE LAKE IS ALWAYS THE STARTING POINT,” says Nathan Robinson, RLA, and one of the Lead Designers of Chalet Landscape, a firm with more than a century of award-winning experience designing and building landscapes suited to the Midwest’s unique climate, soils and conditions. “Our deep understanding of shoreline regulations, seasonal weather and long-term plant performance makes us a trusted partner for properties, where durability, beauty and environmental responsibility must coexist.” Along Chicago’s North Shore and in Lake Geneva, landscapes balance formality near the home with a relaxed, natural character toward the shoreline. Native stone, warm woods, layered terraces and plantings echo the lakeside textures, framing water views while blurring indoors and out through patios, cabanas and gathering spaces. “The goal is to complement, not compete with the views—allowing the water, sky and changing seasons to remain the focal point.”
“We reimagine landscapes to support entertainment, relaxation and a deep connection to nature.”

3 Building Tips
Start with a comprehensive site analysis. Understand setback requirements, stormwater movement, soil conditions and long-term maintenance needs before finalizing design decisions.
· Prioritize view corridors and privacy equally, and invest in infrastructure—drainage, grading, structural elements—as much as aesthetics.
· Avoid overbuilding at the shoreline; thoughtful integration with the natural landscape will always feel more timeless.

ALONG THE MIDWEST’S STORIED SHORES, landscapes aren’t just scenery; they are immersive settings that enhance every breeze, reflection and sunset. At Hoerr Schaudt, Founder and Senior Partner Doug Hoerr, President and Partner Carroll Conway and Partners Nick Fobes, John Evans and Simon Prunty craft landscapes that honor the rhythm and power of the water. Guided by the belief that the lake always leads, their award-winning designs protect delicate edges, preserve open sightlines and draw daily life closer to the water. Curated yet relaxed, plantings respond to sun, shade and spray, while paths and terraces choreograph a gradual arrival to the water’s edge, encouraging both gathering and quiet introspection. “The transition from home to lake needs to be as smooth as glass,” Hoerr says. “Treating the landscape as a canvas, we’re committed to enhancing, rather than distracting from the beauty of the water.”
“Landscape design does mo re than frame the water; it shapes life at its edge.”
Vast Horizons
“Lakefront design often operates within a strict framework where protected dunes, bluff conditions, setback rules, layered governance and multiple regulatory bodies shape every move,” Prunty explains. “Rather than limiting our creativity, these parameters refine it, encouraging us to create inventive solutions that stabilize fragile shorelines while preserving views and access to the water.”
Seasonal Strategy
Designing at the water’s edge demands fluency in the land itself. From sunlit lawns to shaded woodland borders and exposed, wind-swept bluffs, conditions can quickly shift, which requires thoughtful calibration rather than broad strokes. “Listen to the site and the microclimates, and buy the right plants for the right spot,” Hoerr advises. “By respecting sun, shade and moisture conditions, landscapes remain resilient through Midwest winters and vibrant in summer months.”
Lake Michigan Milestone
Overlooking Lake Michigan, Modern Lakeside Perch transforms engineering into poetry. A framed arrival view draws the eye through the home to the water, while a woodland edge shields the glass façade. A cantilevered deck floats above the bluff, anchored by helical piers in sandy soil and clad in pre-weathered Ipe. As the Partners describe it, “The final result is a cohesive landscape that maximizes water views, balances outdoor spaces with the scale and style of the home and incorporates regional materials and plantings, making th is modern masterpiece appear as if it has stood there for years.”

LIFE ALONG THE WATER calls for a thoughtful balance of beauty, endurance and ease, where design responds as much to nature as to the way people gather, relax and celebrate. That approach defines the work of Kane Bros Inc. Led by Principals Chris and Frank Kane, the Chicagoland-based firm has been shaping exceptional lakefront landscapes since 1994. With many early projects rooted in Midwest lake communities, their philosophy was forged by the realities of the region’s unique way of living. “You don’t get second chances on the water; every detail has to be right, durable and intentional,” Frank says, underscoring the importance of careful planning and long-term craftsmanship. Chris adds, “From Lake Michigan to Lake Geneva and the Fox River, we create timeless, lake-inspired environments that frame views, respect the shoreline and elevate the rhythm of lake living for generations to come.”
“We have a deep app reciation for balancing architecture with nature and formality with ease.”
Shoreline Strategy
At Kane Bros, thoughtful preparation forms the foundation of lasting results. “Every project begins with a careful study of the land’s topography so the plan evolves naturally from the site itself,” Chris explains. “We examine how a property lives through every season before ever breaking ground.” That diligence allows them to anticipate erosion, drainage and access needs while preserving natural character and ensuring a seamless transition from home to horizon.
Water To Water
In Union Pier, Michigan, the firm crafted a relaxed lakefront retreat designed for gathering, activity and enjoyment. An in-ground pool was carefully positioned to preserve sightlines, creating what Frank describes as “a seamless transition where water leads naturally to water, while easy beach access and a sport court support a dynamic, family-focused lifestyle.”
Crafted Experiences
Beyond infrastructure and materials, the firm focuses on how families truly use their outdoor spaces. Entertaining terraces, fire features and quiet seating nooks are composed to encourage connection while maintaining privacy and comfort. “Every property tells us how it wants to be experienced,” Chris states. Frank agrees, “We design with intention, shaping spaces that feel intuitive from the moment you step outside.” That collaborative process results in environments that evolve gracefully as families create lasting memories along the water’s edge.

FOR MANY MIDWEST HOMEOWNERS, a lake house is more than a getaway—it’s a place for connection, relaxation and creating memories. At Michael Abraham Architecture, lakefront homes are thoughtfully crafted to reflect both tradition and modern living. “We strive to create high-end residential spaces that look to the past but are decidedly contemporary,” says Owner and Principal Architect Michael Abraham. “Lake homeowners want something with a history and to build lasting family traditions for future generations.” Specializing in Lake Geneva and Southwest Michigan, the firm embraces both areas for their connection to water, outdoor living and multigenerational gathering. Here, Michael and his team design residences that feel distinct from everyday homes—escapes that are “comfortable, durable and more fun,” he notes—emphasizing flexible layouts, generous living areas and guest spaces, with the lake always in view.
“Our goal is to create homes that feel calm, light-filled and rooted in their surroundings.”
Q&A
DESIGNING YOUR ESCAPE
What should homeowners consider when building a lake house? Lake homes naturally become gathering places, so it’s essential to have enough sleeping spaces and to think beyond just bedrooms. I recommend incorporating secondary lounge areas within guest spaces—places slightly removed from main entertaining zones where visitors can relax, recharge or let kids unwind. How does the natural landscape influence design? The natural beauty of the lake has a huge influence on how homeowners want their homes to feel. There’s a strong desire to blur the line between indoors and outdoors—maximizing views, natural light and the feeling of being constantly connected to the water. Large windows, open floor plans and layered outdoor living spaces allow the landscape to become part of the everyday experience.
How does building a lakefront home differ from any other? A lake home should feel different from a client’s suburban or city residence. It naturally becomes more relaxed, more communal and more connected to the outdoors. We typically design with larger gathering spaces, flexible layouts and a strong emphasis on outdoor living. Things like terraces, screened porches, patios and fire features become more important. In many ways, lake homes are designed around shared experiences and time spent with family and friends, so the architecture and landscape work together to support this.

PICTURE THIS: a state-of-the-art poolscape suited for entertaining and afternoons swimming with the family alike, set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Michigan. This is what Tony Zahn and his team at Zahn Builders create for their clients every day. Of course, the homeowner doesn’t always want a pool and the locations vary, but the concept of an experiential lakeside vacation home that makes the most of the views—that is present throughout the firm’s portfolio. For Zahn, a passion for place inspires the focus on this niche. “I have traveled the world, but nothing beats a Lake Michigan summer day in July or August,” he shares. Building most often for Chicago residents who seek a generational gathering place, Zahn Builders has crafted more than 60 waterfront homes and has become known for their understanding of what this unique environment demands. Zahn’s top tip for homeowners? “Always involve a builder early in the process, ideally before purchasing.”
“From classic New England architecture to one-of-a-kind modern homes, we build it all—but the lake is a common denominator.”
Humble Beginnings
Asked to share the history behind the firm, Zahn says, “I started with a solid team of myself and three other carpenters. The strong carpentry skills allowed us to enter into building custom homes mainly on the lakeshore along Holland and Saugatuck. Today, we build consistently from New Buffalo north to Pentwater.”
Lake Learnings
One of the greatest elements of value that Zahn and his team bring to homeowners is their niched-down expertise on all things lakeside building. “Creating a home here involves an understanding of the grading, climate and more,” Zahn says. “Not all building sites are created equal, but they often cost the same per linear foot of water frontage, which is why we emphasize bringing us into the conversation early on. Once planning begins, careful consideration needs to be addressed to EGLE regulations, site mapping and overall site harmony. We always talk in depth about what side of the house should be the path to the waterfront and then keep that side free of vents and utilities. A lot of thought goes into making these homes not only beautiful and ideal for the homeowner’s lifestyle, but complementary to the setting.”
