DONGHIA’S CRESCENT CHAIR AND OTTOMAN
WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL
With their latest collection, Icons II, Donghia taps its extraordinary archive once more to create updated iterations of founder Angelo Donghia’s original designs. The Crescent Chair and Ottoman, newly arrived in the company’s showrooms, is a celebration of his mastery of scale, tailoring, comfort and elegance. “The two-tier slipper chair became a staple in Angelo’s own decor as well as his clients’ homes,” explains Doug Garfinkle, who was named creative director shortly after the company
was purchased by Kravet in 2020. (Donghia founded his company in 1968 and was renowned as much for his business acumen as for his interiors, which brought such clients as Halston and Ralph Lauren.) “Versatile and overstuffed, it came to embody and identify his style as luxurious, relaxed and distinctly American,” Garfinkle adds of the iconic design. This newly released model honors archival forms but has been updated for today. “The Crescent Chair embraces patterns and a playful spirit,” Garfinkle continues. “Its function and casual nature invite a relaxed, lounge-like atmosphere, yet the tailoring remains second to none. Modern and elegant, the Crescent Chair pays homage to the past while moving the vision forward.” kravet.com
BEHIND THE BRAND
DENVER MODERN
For Donnie Criswell and Lindsey Price Criswell, co-founders of Denver Modern, seating is everything While the duo also manufactures tables, beds, hutches and more, it was the success of their Vail Lounge Chair in 2020 that led them to introduce the Vail Counter Stool, now their most popular piece. The couple lets us into their creative process. denvermodern.com
What defines Denver Modern furniture?
A nature-based palette with Italian leathers, Belgian linens, white oak, walnut and mixed metals. Our versatility comes out in our products’ details and how they sit.
What do you prioritize in your design? Materiality and comfort, with clean lines and lasting components that look better over time. Our furnishings can be transformative in a space.
Any exciting news for 2025? We are opening a larger showroom in Denver’s Central Park, with an expanded fabric palette and different material and metal combinations. Our industry has been focused on bouclé, but we’ve found new woven textiles that are robust with a different silhouette. We’ll also be debuting a new counter stool, lounge chair, dining table and side table.
THE INSIDER
ROCHE BOBOIS DENVER
A year into its debut in Cherry Creek, Roche Bobois’ Denver showroom has solidified the tony neighborhood as a hub for high-end design: The boutique is an elegant, expansive and convenient spot designed to draw from all parts of Colorado and the wider Rockies region. LUXE chatted with showroom manager Benoit Bonaventure to learn more about what’s resonating in the Colorado design scene. Many visitors are interior designers, shares Bonaventure, who is pleased to provide them with a place to bring clients to experience the furniture in real life. “We’ve always sought to expand our presence, and Denver is an incredible region with exceptional homes,” he says. To celebrate the brand’s 50 th anniversary in the States, Roche Bobois re cently introduced the Bamboo Mood collection— a serendipitous fit for Denver, as Bonaventure notes that Coloradans tend toward organic shapes and textured fabrics with warmer, neutral tones, such as beige or forest green. On a visit to the Cherry Creek showroom, be sure to also look for the iconic Mah Jong and Bubble collections, which Bonaventure says are the location’s top sellers. “Most of our clients come back to shop for more of our pieces—it’s being a part of the Roche Bobois family,” he sums up. The Cherry Creek boutique is a particularly charming invitation to join in. roche-bobois.com
STUDIO TALK
INTEGRAL THREAD
Don’t let the bohemian vibe of Integral Thread fool you. CEO Stephanie Holmes is a focused business owner who cultivates relationships around the world to bring luxurious rugs and tapestries to Colorado. Here, she tells us about her studio and its ethos. integralthreadstudio.com
What’s new in the rug world for 2025? Luxury plains will continue to rule our industry, so be on the look-out for alpaca, cashmere, wild silk, mohair and various types of sheep’s wool. Although most of our rugs are sourced in India, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Italy and Peru, our most popular trend is the colorful artist series by our curated vendor, Knots Rugs, out of London. Look for bronzes, honeys, golds and warm, rosy browns.
What influences your rug compositions? We are continuously experimenting with material options and various weaving techniques, using staples like high-quality New Zealand wool and Chinese silk but also plant fibers like cactus, nettle and linen.
How can designers collaborate with Integral Thread? Collaborative projects are our favorites! We regularly sit down with designers to determine quality, budget, durability and sustainability requirements, then create the perfect one-of-a-kind rug for their client.
Tell us about your charity work. It’s crucial to give back and support each other. I treat Integral Thread like a nonprofit: My goal has always been to use our success, outreach and profits to give back to our local community, our international weaving communities and our charitable partners. We are integral to each other’s existence.

CALM & COLLECTED
FOR DESIGNER BETH WEBB, SERENITY IN THE BEDROOM—AND BEYOND—COMES DOWN TO CAPTURING THE ESSENCE OF WHITE.
WRITTEN BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT
Pale, nature-inspired tones converge in a luxurious bedroom in Kiawah Island, South Carolina. Drapes of Rose Cumming fabric and an Eve and Staron rug wrap the space in softness.
The gracious four-poster bed is Holly Hunt.
photo:
Beloved for her neutral, tonal, collected interiors, Atlanta-based designer Beth Webb is a master craftswoman of peaceful environs, whether seaside, mountain top or in the heart of a city. And in no space is fostering a tranquil visual language more important than the bedroom—a cocooning place of retreat that’s squarely top of mind during this season of hibernation.
Webb’s distinct brand of quiet luxury is on proud display in her muchanticipated monograph, Embracing Beauty: Serene Spaces for Living (Rizzoli, February 2025), which promenades 14 magnificent homes from Florida to the Grand Tetons. Within its glossy pages, the designer subtly divulges the elements that, for her, compose a restful bedroom: soft palettes, gracious canopy beds trimmed with diaphanous drapery, richly textured
wall treatments, crisp Italian linens and a perch with patina to take in the views out the window.
Below, in an unpublished passage adapted exclusively for the pages of LUXE, the designer expounds on capturing the feeling of white (rather than the hue itself), and on the fundamentals that together make a home a sanctuary. Take a page from her design philosophy playbook in reimagining your own boudoir for a long winter’s nap.
The snowfall outside the window in Paris makes the city white in its body, white in its quiet. I wake early and sit in the lamplight, watching. This white. This quiet. How do we inhabit it? How do we maintain, in Stieglitz’s words, this “great white stillness?”
This is what I’m seeking: to enable us to live inside this sheltering. Sanctuary,
A creamy white bedroom in Atlanta synthesizes designer Beth Webb’s (portrait above) quiet yet layered approach. The Tara Shaw Maison bed sports a skirt of Loro Piana fabric and custom Julia B. Casa linens.
refuge—there are many names. “Embrace” speaks to this intimacy—to being sheltered and protected. When you are held by light, by space, by music, by a beloved, there can be a luminosity to embrace. There is an aura of refuge.
I studied fine art at university and, early in my career, visited the Florence Academy of Art, where they still taught in the tradition of 19th-century École des
Beaux-Arts academicians. They drew from life, down to the bones. They studied: line, material, proportion, placement, negative space, composition. My intention to this day is to apply that visual language of art to interiors. A room is an immersive composition. A key tool is light. In each of our projects, we start sculpting space with light. Our palette is quiet but always subtly tailored to the qualities of light in that landscape. East and west, mountain and coast, there is an intimacy of the interaction between light and color that we are very attentive to. At its best, it enables dissolution into quiet and contentment.
Within these serene interiors, detail enables discovery over time—all is not immediately revealed. When you study painting, you learn the value of negative space, of absence, of what is withheld. Like the work of the symbolist poets, it’s about allusion, not explication. “The ‘blanks’ indeed take on importance,” writes Mallarmé. It’s only upon closer
attention that one discovers the subtle shadings, the refinements, the textures. From the way the local light interacts with a palette—and how the subtlest difference in shade can transform the feeling of a space—to the touch of a textile so soft that it elicits an immediate sense of calm, a deeply attentive choreography of these elements enables the whole to be much more than the sum of its parts. It creates atmosphere. It creates sanctuary. And sanctuary is a form of embrace. When you imbue a home with warmth, welcome, charm and ease, it holds you in return—a room becomes a refuge, a house, a haven. As a designer, it is my life’s work to achieve this with each and every room. I want it to be well-designed, I want it to be beautiful but, more than anything, I want it to provide peace. bethwebb.com, rizzoliusa.com
Ethereal drapes on a canopy bed are a signature stroke of Webb’s, as seen in her forthcoming monograph (cover left). In this Brays Island, South Carolina, bedroom, panels of scrim linen from Ulster Linen offer a touch of rustic elegance.

Sweet Dreams
THE FOUNDER OF THE LUXURY BED COLLECTION SHARES TIPS FOR GETTING A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP.
Known as the Sleep Whisperer, Mary Pat Wallace understands just how important selecting the right mattress is when it comes to getting proper shut-eye. It’s the one item in your home that is used more than anything else and can have the biggest impact on wellbeing. Below, Wallace shares what to keep in mind when investing in a mattress. theluxurybedcollection.com
Materials Matter
It’s essential that the mattress companies I work with use natural materials. Spending eight hours a night with your face in something that’s full of harmful chemicals is not ideal. Both Hästens and Vispring are focused on using wood bases that aren’t treated with toxins along with flax, cotton, wool and steel springs. And what these materials do, depending on quantity and how they’re layered with the different spring designs, is deliver a completely elevated feel and sleeping experience.
Personalization Is Key
Different body densities require different mattress makeups. The brands at The Luxury Bed Collection offer split tensions, which can make all the difference when sleeping in the same bed with someone. For example, a smaller person needs less support and more pressure relief. I personally think that most people are sleeping on mattresses that are way too firm—go with what feels better to you!
Do Your Homework
I admit that I cringe when I hear about online purchases—you really should go in person to test a mattress. We have locations in Chicago, Dallas and Naples, Florida, and I urge people to come in, book some time, turn your cellphone off and get educated. Tell us how you’re sleeping, what your needs are, and let us help guide you through this process so you can find a mattress that, no joke, that will change your life and keep you healthy.

CARVING OUT SPACE TO BREATHE, A DALLAS INTERIOR DESIGN TEAM FORMS A ROOM LAYERED IN TEXTURE AND GEARED TOWARD HOLISTIC LIVING.
WRITTEN BY LARA HALLOCK
“This room was designed as a sanctuary for the homeowner,” says Cody Brown, co-owner of Bridges Brown Interiors. With partner Jeremy Bridges, he incorporates a lifestyle-oriented approach to the firm’s timeless and eclectic designs. To create a peaceful meditation room in an expansive Dallas home, Brown focused on all-natural materials that allude to the outdoors: A cork wallcovering pressed with specks of gold leaf creates a meditative backdrop; a set of hand-crocheted silk lights present a range of stony hues; and green acts as an accent throughout, as seen in a molded

BRIGHT FUTURE
A look into the made-in-America lighting companies that are illuminating the way forward.
WRITTEN BY KATHRYN GIVEN AND SARAH SHELTON
Family Affair
BOYD LIGHTING
Shepherding Boyd
Lighting into the future is creative director Schuyler Sweet, a fourth-generation Boyd family member. The company was founded in San Francisco in 1921 and has more than a century of legacy under its belt, including creating the fixtures for the city’s famous Opera House in the ’30s. Since then, it has navigated changing design movements—Beaux Arts, Art Deco, midcentury modern—and countless innovations. That’s where Sweet comes in, with one eye on the past and one on the
future, with a goal to distill and finesse the Boyd DNA. “Every generation has their own philosophy,” he says. “My ethos is to bring Boyd back to its classic modern roots and add a levity to the brand.”
Boyd is now headquartered in Colorado, where everything is handmade to order. At the intersection of its aesthetic are materials like brass, bronze and copper— nonferrous, nonrusting materials that will stand the test of time—in silhouettes and shapes devoid of extraneous details. “Part of the challenge is making a really simple design,” says Sweet. “There’s elegance in simplicity.” The Ovalo pendant above embodies these principles: unadorned, hand-finished brass loops are suspended from the ceiling and illuminated by an LED light source. As for what’s to come this year, Schuyler hints at a move towards
femininity and softness, with glass having a noticeable presence. “Design is allowed to change with the times and reflect what is going on in the world—it’s a dialogue, a visual language.” boydlighting.com

Boyd Lighting’s elegant Ovalo pendant hangs dramatically over a staircase. Schuyler Sweet (below), the company’s creative director, who joined the company in 2011, oversees the brand’s identity from its Colorado headquarters.

“When I first started at Hubbardton Forge 13 years ago, I didn’t have a job title,” says Andy Morter. “I was given a long leash to explore and tinker with materials and LEDs, which were changing the lighting landscape at the time.” Fast-forward to present day, and Morter, now design developer under the direction of VP of Design David Kitts, continues to experiment and take creative liberties, resulting in provocative creations like the Snaps collection, shown here and launching early this year.
The system’s leather straps, connecting LED modules that sit within alabaster discs, are fully customizable, giving interior designers the freedom to play with the configuration and positioning to create unique and bold installations. The fluid design is not necessarily inspired by a place or thing or era, but rather by the raw materials at hand. “It’s about the exploration of parts and pieces and bringing these materials and new technologies together,” says Morter.
The Vermont company’s goal is to build upon its storied foundation for everything created, from the newest leather Snaps collection to its iconic metal offerings. What began as a forgery 50 years ago has evolved into so much more, but staying ahead while remaining true to their roots is a formula they have mastered thus far. hubbardtonforge.com

RTO LIGHTING
“I’m definitely the orchestra leader in our opera of sorts,” Robert True Ogden says of RTO Lighting, the company he founded 20 years ago and which has since grown to some 60 people. Departments dedicated to woodworking, ceramics and metalworking are filled with talented makers working alongside employees in logistics and prototyping to create pieces that sing.
At the beginning of Ogden’s career, crafting lights was a creative side gig that didn’t have the limitations of his day job, but he soon realized pursuing it full-time was far more fulfilling. Today, RTO Lighting is a craft-first company whose products are all handmade in its Philadelphia workshop, something Ogden feels immensely proud of as he oversees the artisans who put together each item.
“My hope is that, in having outstanding quality, these designs will be collected and passed down through generations,” he says.
Most recently, Ogden has come together with designer and owner of Fair showroom Brad Ford to launch their first lighting collaboration, the Alina Collection, comprising table, floor and pendant lights with beautiful hair-on-hide shades. Ogden was inspired after reading an article about leather tanning and some of the toxicities caused by the process, instead wanting to embrace the natural product as is. The makers love how the product turned out—cowlicks and all—with the RTO Lighting founder noting, “There’s a simplicity to the designs that celebrates form, function and materiality”. rtolighting.com; fair-design.com

Sheer Genius
For nearly 70 years, Jack Lenor Larsen’s eponymous line of textiles has been a go-to source for organic-meets-contemporary fabrics, utilizing techniques both old and new to create one-of-a-kind designs. Of Larsen’s many offerings—decorative weaves, nubby wovens, velvets and wools— it’s the brand’s attention to the humble sheer and its duty to diffuse the light from
a sun-drenched window that designers have long admired. Take the Koto textured sheer (from their latest collection inspired by African crafts) hung here. The gauzy open weave texture is a blend of wool and linen with a hint of metallic yarn that subtly shimmers in the sunlight—a glimmering surprise even on winter’s longer and darker days, letting the outdoors in. cowtan.com

Standouts from Larsen’s newest collection include Koto, a dreamy sheer woven with metallic thread, and Kifi, a diamond-shaped jacquard weave.

All Natural
Ali Davin has spent decades in the industry developing her unique approach to luxurious, sustainable design, which in many cases begins with using environmentally safe, nontoxic materials alongside lots of natural light. See, for instance, the Healdsburg, California, dining area at left, which features reclaimed wooden beams, linen drapery and metal furniture as well as limestone ooring. Door ventilation on three sides of the room activates a lovely cross breeze, and the space was designed with sunrise and sunset positioning in mind to create energy efficiencies. Curious where to start when creating your own healthy space? Inspired by the pursuit of well-being, Italian bedding and bath linen company Frette has introduced its winter designs. An ode to wellness rituals, the collection invites you to relax at home and cozy up in extremely luxurious bedding, blankets and pillows. CEO Filippo Arnaboldi explains that this season is all about “transforming spaces into authentic sanctuaries of refinement,” and the new pieces, which emphasize natural materials like silk, cashmere and cotton, are indeed ideal for immersing yourself within your own bedroom oasis. Light The Way
Lutron’s smallest downlight to date, the new Ketra D2 comes in an array of minimal trims finely honed for a flush-to-the-ceiling aesthetic sought out by top designers. “The sleek, 2-inch aperture is a testament to modern design, allowing me to integrate lighting seamlessly into my interiors without overpowering them,” says Young Huh, founder of Young Huh Interior Design, who frequently uses Lutron pieces. The fixtures also leverage Ketra’s full-color, fourchannel optics to create the widest light spectrum available and adapt to various moments throughout the day. “Their discreet presence means I can focus on overall aesthetics, using light to showcase key features—like beautiful artwork or textured fabrics— without detracting from the design narrative,” Huh shares. lutron.com
Expert Opinion
When it comes to color and its effect on wellbeing, textile designer Lori Weitzner, a true expert on the subject, sums it up in two words: It’s personal. What feels calming or exhilarating to one individual might have the opposite eff ect for another. In her book Ode to Color , Weitzner has developed a test (which is also available online) that readers can take to learn which hues are best suited for them. The results are one of 10 unique “color worlds” composed of nuanced palettes for nuanced needs. Of the over 100,000 completed tests, the leading outcome is Fragrant Woods—the shades of an ancient forest like mossy greens and dark woods that, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, feel “grounding, rooting and nurturing,” explains Weitzner. Look out for these richer tones in the year ahead. loriweitzner.com
Open Vista
Marvin windows are rede ning the concept of a “room with a view.” In response to requests from architects, the company’s new, state-of-the art Modern Corner Window brings penthouse vibes and unobstructed views to any room of the house. As the name indicates, the window has two panes that meet at a right angle, seamlessly framing the exterior surroundings into a postcard-worthy panorama. The Corner Window maximizes two important elements: sight lines and natural light. It’s both an impactful design choice, creating a dramatic focal point, and a pragmatic solution for letting more light into a room. marvin.com
The leading results of Lori Weitzner’s color test are hues found in nature, like rich greens and warm woods. Clockwise from top right are new paint colors Paris Rain, Leather Saddle Brown, Rosepine, and Cinnamon Slate by Benjamin Moore.

SOFT GREENS ARE A VERSATILE ANCHOR FOR ANY ROOM— JUST ASK DESIGNER MICHELLE MORGAN HARRISON.
WRITTEN BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT
“I’m known for creating ‘breathe out’ houses, and for me, greens are an amazingly calming tool,” says Connecticut-based designer Michelle Morgan Harrison. With this philosophy in mind, Morgan Harrison looked to floor coverings in gentle variations of the hue to anchor her clients’ Greenwich
residence. Take the dining room above, whose mélange is pulled together by a Moroccan rug with hints of sage peeking through creamy shag plumes. “Pairing a vibrant base with neutral shag is a great way to soften colors,” the designer says. The adjacent breakfast area’s sleek lines are
warmed by a dhurrie-style wool flatweave in a shade Morgan Harrison dubs deep celery. “Rugs are the key to any room and a great way to add understated color,” she notes. “Here, we pulled subtle shades from nature to create something layered, relaxing and fabulous.” morganharrisonhome.com

LIVING
KITCHEN + BATH
Design is in the details, as evidenced by a thoughtful Pacific Northwest abode that celebrates natural light and timeless materials.
In the Pacific Northwest, Lisa Staton designed a kitchen for clients who wanted to infuse classic style throughout their home. Custom cabinets are painted Farrow & Ball’s Shaded White. The Wood Stone pizza oven is surrounded by Mutual Materials brick tile, and Woodbridge Furniture counter stools pull up to the island.
Time Traveler
DESIGNER LISA STATON USES CLASSIC STYLE TO TURN BACK THE CLOCK IN A WASHINGTON KITCHEN, BATH AND LAUNDRY.
WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING
When remodeling this Washington home, designer Lisa Staton worked hard to ensure it didn’t read as “new,” channeling the old-world European charm her clients fell in love with during their travels. That aesthetic became the cornerstone for an update that created timeless rooms for work, play and relaxation. We asked Staton how she shaped some of the most significant spaces in the abode. lisastaton.com
How did you approach the kitchen? This part of the house is important because she is a cookbook author and wanted a beautiful place to work and photograph her culinary creations, and he enjoys roasting and brewing coffee. Residential designer Adair Orr of Armadillo Design Lab and I relocated the kitchen to the other side of the house to take advantage of the views. It is a workhorse room— cooking implements hang over the range within arm’s reach—but is also styled as an extension of the living spaces. Most of the appliances are hidden in the pantry, which keeps things airy and allows room to display items like serveware, plants and candlesticks. Perimeter cabinets are a soft white, the island is a natural wood tone, and both have traditional trim and marble counters.
Northwest Woodslayer fabricated the cabinets; the brass hardware and curved faucets are by Devol. A Thermador range is backed by custom vintage-looking tile the clients found in Portugal. Staton discovered the pair of antique pendants at Obsolete in Los Angeles.

Tell us about the coffee bar between the kitchen and dining room. My java-loving client wanted to make coffee while enjoying the sunshine in the kitchen, but we couldn’t find the right spot. Instead, we established a coffee bar in the passage between the two rooms and then surrounded it with interior windows that allow for plenty of light. The location is perfect for entertaining, as it permits him to easily serve guests a cup no matter where they are sitting. This dining room color is dreamy! We wanted it to be differentiated from the lighter colors in the kitchen. When you enter the dining room, there is this sense of reaching a retreat or destination as you are surrounded by inky color painted on paneled walls. How did you decide on the mix of pieces here? The clients owned this table but requested fully upholstered chairs to surround it, so we gave them comfortable seats covered in an old-school plaid textile. Scalloped bone-china shades on the pendants are new and add a fresh note. The wall sconces and the rug are vintage—older pieces add emotion to a room. Although we occasionally use online sources, I insist on visiting local and East Coast brick-and-mortar shops for antique and vintage pieces. It’s a practice that provides the kind of organic discovery an algorithm just can’t feed you.
Staton designed the coffee bar’s cabinetry (left), which is topped with Carrara marble and lit by glass Mullan light fixtures. In the dining room (below), cloaked in Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue, a Christie Rise & Fall pendant by Original BTC hangs above Jessica Charles chairs and a table the clients acquired from 1stdibs.

“I think it’s important that this utilitarian room be practical but also in keeping with the rest of the house.”
–LISA STATON
What was the goal with this laundry room? Since the owners will be in this room a lot, why not make it as enjoyable as it is functional? We kept the original cabinetry but painted it a soft blush color. Adding butcher-block countertops was key, because the material is durable and attractive. I think it’s important that this utilitarian room be practical but also in keeping with the rest of the house. You could say the same for the vintage-inspired laundry rack and step stool. All these elements help the very modern washer and dryer live comfortably in a more traditional environment. The deep-green wall tile reflects the gorgeous Pacific Northwest colors you see outside the window and gives the space a relaxing feeling.

What were the considerations for the primary bathroom? One of the notable features in this room is the killer view. In order to not block the scenery more than necessary, we installed sweet café curtains that provide privacy but allow a look at the water, trees and distant mountains. The homeowner loves a soak, so a stand-alone tub was a necessity, and a pair of marble shelves provides a space for toiletries and candles. Their brackets, like the tub ller and taps, are unlacquered brass that will patina over time. Is the oor brick? This room seemed to call for a unique oor, something with an aged appearance. Brick was brie y
considered, but we opted for a tumbled marble eld tile the client discovered. It has a rosy hue, and it was masonry-like without being porous. When laid in a herringbone pattern, it certainly resembles brick. Tell us about hanging multiple light xtures over the tub. I was looking for something a bit more unexpected than a chandelier above the tub. The clients couldn’t pick just a single style of these handmade xtures, so we opted to use one of each, hung in a row at staggered heights. It’s something like a deconstructed chandelier, and you can appreciate their shapes as they dangle in front of a wall of simple white-hued tile.

INDUSTRY INSIDERS
MEET TODAY’S DESIGN INDUSTRY GREATS
Whether they are designing, constructing or outfitting a home or environment (or perhaps doing all three), it takes a creative vision and a passion for excellence to do it with style and skill. Within the pages of Industry Insiders, LUXE Interiors + Design celebrates those who dare to do just that with their own unique flair.
KA DESIGNWORKS
“OUR PROJECTS ARE UNIQUE CREATIONS THAT REPRESENT OUR EXCEPTIONAL ABILITIES AND OUR CLIENTS’ MOST CHERISHED DREAMS.”
When a creative idea takes root and then grows steadily into a thriving endeavor, the results are organic, innovative and truly spectacular. And so is the case with KA DesignWorks. “Beginning in 2006 as a side project where I provided consulting services to other architects, KA DesignWorks has evolved into an award-winning, much-published firm that pushes the envelope of mountain modern design throughout Colorado,” says Principal Architect, Kenneth Adler. Known for their skills, talent, passion and collaborative approach, Adler and his team provide their discerning clientele with a full slate of superior architecture and interior design services. “As architects and design professionals primarily engaged in residential projects, we’ve made it our mission to get inside of our clients’ heads so that we can fully understand the wants, needs and visions they have for their homes and spaces,” Adler shares. “In addition to our uncanny

ability to show each client exactly what they are looking for and our abiding reputation for exceptional customer service, we are also well known as team players amongst our professional colleagues. As a result, we are often the primary architects of choice with general contractors and attribute a large number of our projects to those referrals.”
ASK THE EXPERT
Talk about a notable project that exemplifies your expertise. Although it is difficult to choose, one that is close to my heart is the White Horse Springs Residence in Aspen. We reimagined this 1990s house—that was inspired by the work of Ricardo Legorreta and had no functional place in the Colorado mountains—into a luxurious modern retreat that was honored with a LUXE Red Award in 2021 and became our first spec home sale over $20 million.
How is technology influencing your work?
We’ve always been on the forefront of innovation, embracing technology like computer visualization, which allows us to express our design intent to our clients. And, in a ddition to working with virtual reality for nearly a decade, we are now beginning to explore the potential of generative AI in the rendering and visualization process.
Top Situated directly on the Snowmass ski slopes, this elegant legacy home spans an existing creek with a bridge connecting the entryway and great room. Left A lovely bucolic site provides the perfect setting for this family estate where simple flat roofs punctuated by gables over focal living areas and extensive covered porches blur the lines between the interior and exterior spaces. Right Perched atop the Telluride ski area, this sophisticated great room boasts incredible views of the San Juan Mountains’ multitude of 14,000-foot peaks. Opposite left Thanks to its location in a high alpine meadow above the Roaring Fork Valley, this 6,000-squarefoot, five-bedroom, six-and-a-half-bath home is afforded 180-degree views of Colorado’s Elk Mountains. Opposite right With warm contemporary architecture and a quiet ranch setting close to Aspen, the White Horse Springs Residence is a reimagined generational home that provides the best of all possible worlds.

KH WEBB ARCHITECTS
“WE TREAT EVERY NEW PROJECT AS A GIFT THAT WE GET TO OPEN.”
For the great minds of architecture, nothing is quite so inspiring as a breathtaking environment in which to design. For Kyle Webb and his team at KH Webb, this certainly proves one of the joys of work life. While they passionately enjoy envisioning structures in their home of Colorado, the team has crafted residences from California to Florida and everywhere in between. “The consistent factor is that we are always seeking to push design boundaries and design environments that are meant to evolve and adapt,” Webb shares. “We approach each new client and their location as an opportunity to discover something different and unique.” Indeed, since its founding in 1999, at which point the firm almost immediately took off running, KH Webb has built a robust portfolio of fascinatingly diverse projects. As for the core tenets of the firm’s process, it all begins with the client. “From beginning to end, they are an essential member of our team,” Webb says. “We encourage them to explore their creativity, think in

new ways and be inspired by the process. Each client is heavily relied upon to share their sense of style and vision for how their home should look, feel and function.” Asked to share a project he and the team would be most excited to take on, Webb says, “The next one. We are incredibly grateful for each design opportunity.”
ASK THE EXPERT
Share the influences and inspirations that inform your work.
I am greatly inspired by extensive travels around the globe, including in Europe and Asia. One of America’s highly lauded modernist architects, Louis Kahn, is a core influence for me.
What has been your greatest success?
Celebrating 25 years of KH Webb this past year was one of our greatest successes thus far. Beyond that, we are incredibly passionate about what we do, and for that, we consider ourselves lucky.
Discuss emerging trends.
What are your clients excited about?
Our clients tend to be unique and big thinkers who are very insightful. They, like us, appreciate the chance to create something different and individual through thoughtful design.
Top This elegant contemporary home was designed and built to maximize views of the surrounding mountain beauty. The KH Webb team included multiple outdoor terraces and incorporated nature features. Left Craftsmanship and attention to detail are visible throughout this four-level retreat, which features wood and stone molded into clean, modern lines. Right Built into the side of a mountain on a steep lot, this ski-in, ski-out Vail home is a six-bedroom retreat for the ages. Opposite left An airy, four-bedroom home, this residence was thoughtfully designed to blend simplicity, creativity, restraint and joy. Opposite right Originally designed and built in the 1970s, this home was considered quite modern for its time, centered around a spiral staircase. KH Webb gave it a thoughtful update.

“WE
ATATE STUDIO ARCHITECTS
POSSESS AN UNWAVERING DEDICATION TO QUALITY, A PASSION FOR INNOVATIVE DESIGN AND A DRIVE TO FORM LASTING RELATIONSHIPS WITH OUR CLIENTS.”
lthough architecture is undeniably an analytical, intellectual pursuit, it is also immensely creative. After all, architects envision something out of nothing, bringing to life new shapes and structures that will come together to craft the places where one goes about daily life—it doesn’t get much more creative than that. For Mark A. Tate, AIA, the creative element was familiar even before he decided to step into the field. An artist who specializes in sculpture, his background in art heavily influences the approach of his entire team at Tate Studio Architects. “We view each home as a livable work of art,” he says. “Many of our designs feature large expanses of glass, letting the landscape serve as the backdrop and allowing the owners to live in the view.” While many of the firm’s homes are in its home of Arizona, Tate and team take on projects throughout the world. No matter the variety of beautiful environments, they expertly frame the vistas and welcome nature
Mark A. Tate, AIA OWNER AND PRINCIPAL
into the ambiance of interior places.
Of course, one other factor defines a Tate Studio project, as well: customization.
“Client participation throughout the design process is crucial,” Tate says.
“Our focus is to create one-of-a-kind custom homes that are tailored to their lifestyle, so a comprehensive understanding of it is key.”
ASK THE EXPERT
What type of project would you love to take on?
We’ve been seeing more of a demand for mountain-modern homes in the Rocky Mountain region, and we are happy to meet that demand and approach mountain living from an artful design perspective.
What has been your greatest success?
Our greatest success is being able to call clients our friends. After spending a great deal of time with them working through their custom home designs, we develop friendships that last beyond the construction period and well past move-in day.
What part has the digital age played in your success?
It has evened the playing field when it comes to reaching potential clients. Whereas access to projects used to depend on who you knew, now we are judged solely on our portfolio.

SLIFER DESIGNS
When two colleagues turned close friends decide to make their passion into a shared pursuit, good things are sure to follow. This is certainly the case for Anne Marie Ostmeyer and Kelsey Cole, who decided to found their own design studio, Texture Design Studio, after working side-by-side at Slifer Designs. Now, some years later, they are pu rchasing the latter—a full circle moment. Through every transition and big goal, the duo has maintained a grounding connection: their shared values. “We take a holistic approach to design,” Ostmeyer shares. “We start every project as a clean slate and through the creative process, we curate a design that, no matter the style, is memorable and functional. As Suzanne Kasler envisioned the interiors of her clients’ groundup Vail Valley getaway, which they imagined as a cross-generational family gathering spot, her mental mood board lit up with a sartorial spin. “I said, ‘We’re going to make it the Brunello Cucinelli of Beaver Creek,’ ” recalls the designer, referring to the Italian fashion brand’s impeccable-yet-comfortable sportivo chic aesthetic, typically rendered in elegant earth-tone fabrics. “It’s tailored, exudes exclusivity and resonates with the clean, modern feel of the architecture—it seemed like the perfect inspiration for a house here.”
This is the second project with this family for Kasler, and an early-stage collaboration with architect Ruard Veltman (who had also worked with the owners twice previously) helped set the tone of how the home would live—something they both considered deeply. Veltman points to the layered entry, which draws guests into a wide receiving hall with its own cozy fireplace, yet doesn’t immediately give away the home’s mountain views. That stunning scenery, in fact, is intentionally obscured from the entrance by a stone wall at the core of the house that forms the living area’s fireplace. “Clients are often eager to present their ‘wow’ moment—you open the door and ta-dah—but I wanted to let this house unfold,” explains the architect. “Once you’re inside, you don’t always want to see the front door; you want to feel more nestled within your home.”
The residence is “set up like three houses with two connectors,” he goes on to explain.
The living room, which opens to a terrace, is centrally placed, with the dining room doubling as a passageway framed with windows that leads into the kitchen. Branching off the other side of the living room, a study detailed with similarly facing windows serves as a connection into the owners’ suite. “Modern elements allow this house to breathe,” notes Ruard of the scaled-up use of glass that invites in the woody surroundings from nearly every space. The lower level holds guest rooms, a gaming area and a separate ski entry and lounge space, neatly allowing privacy for visitors and keeping sporting equipment separated.
Due to area architectural guidelines, which draw from classic log cabins and the traditional architecture of National Park lodges, the house’s exterior is “designed as a tailored and more modern version of those grand lodges,” says Veltman, noting that the expertise and oversight of general contractor David Hyde drove the home’s high level of craftsmanship. “Every ounce of design was used to either create comfort and beauty or to disguise mechanics,” the architect adds.
Comfort and beauty were the cornerstones of Kasler’s cohesive furnishing plan as well. She sought out inviting pieces that leaned contemporary but were also replete with details that read as art, not unlike pieces of high fashion. See the contrasting band of natural wood that flows across a low cabinet in the living room, or a nearby chair’s leather-wrapped arms—“the kind of design moment you might find on a Hermès handbag,” describes the interior designer. And the room’s wall art is a series of stone panels etched with a metallic wash and hung with brackets, their weightiness creating a connection to the architecture. “They’re perfect for this house and so, so chic,” Kasler enthuses.
The overarching palette is a study in neutrals, with whites, taupes, champagnes and grays predominating. “When you don’t have a lot of color in a space, the challenge becomes how to make it still interesting,” the designer muses. “We accomplished this through layers of rugs and textures, luxurious fabrics that provide so much warmth, and these really refined moments like the kitchen chairs’ beautiful woven backs.” She also points out the subtle, tactile nature of the home’s plaster walls, the use of wood paneling and exposed beams and the unlined linen draperies she hung to diffuse the light and soften the steel muntins crisscrossing the expansive windows. Nature is very much part of the home’s interior experience as well, as Kasler’s palette of whites seems to be in conversation with the surrounding aspen trees.
“Every detail is thought out and exquisite, and against the strength of the materials, there’s an elegant casualness I really think we achieved,” the designer concludes, mentioning how much the owners trusted the team and allowed them to push the envelope creatively. “They wanted perfection,” affirms Veltman, “and this is one of those wonderful houses where everything just works.”
In another view of the
living room, a fieldstone-clad central fireplace and carved stone panels found at the Paris Flea Market bring natural texture into the space. The low cabinet and chair are both Liagre. The pendant is Ochre.

Kerry Joyce linen ties together the bedroom, appearing on a Dmitriy & Co. bed and lounge chair, a Liaigre bench, the Hickory Chair ottoman and on the draperies. Jeri Ledbetter’s Rifugio III overlooks the bed and the drum chandelier is from Profiles.

ASPEN MOUNTAIN CHALET CREATE A HOME AWASH IN LIGHT AND LIVING SPACE.

Aspen fiercely protects its small-town feel, even as worldly new neighbors— Hermès, Gucci and Louis Vuitton to name a few— have recently moved in.
To that end, the city now has stringent limitations in place when it comes to construction: Only six demolitions are allowed each year. Happily, when architects Sarah Broughton and John Rowland’s clients purchased a classic 1960s trilevel mountain chalet in Aspen’s West End, they were enamored with its quintessential A-frame silhouette. “It has such charm and mountain feel,” says the wife. Broughton and Rowland, as well as project manager and lead architect Will Otte and interior designer Sarah Abd Raddo, shared her sentiment. “All of us love the A-frame’s iconic form and what it evokes in terms of the history of Aspen,” Broughton reflects. Working with and honoring the existing structure became a priority.
That’s not to say that there wasn’t plenty the clients and design team wanted to tweak. “We started considering how we could bring in more natural light,” says Broughton. “By design, the north-south orientation and steep slope over the eaves cuts off a lot of sun.” It also limits eastern and western views, she points out. A solution arrived via another traditional architectural element: the dormer. Cutting into the roofline to add a series on each side made the biggest impact to the original structure, dramatically changing the top level’s ceiling height, brightness and livability: “The dormers not only make the top floor feel much larger, but they also give our house an elevated, modern mountain look,” comments the wife.
These elements proved pivotal to unblocking additional sight lines. “Each dormer is slightly angled to nod toward different, distant peaks,” Broughton shares of the subtle gesture. A bronze metal roof and cedar siding stained a deep blackbrown further redresses the triangular shape. “We wanted to highlight the history of this building by giving it a dark form, then treat the dormers— which transform the interior space in a really positive way—as playful elements thanks to a contrasting champagne hue that disappears a bit more into the natural landscape,” explains Otte.
Another vital change came courtesy of a completely reconfigured interior stair. Aligned with a dormer that allows a vertical shaft of light to shine down, the residence’s formerly dark center is now bathed in sun. And the staircase itself is spotlight-worthy: Crafted from oak flooring steam-bent to create softly curved edges, wood seems to waterfall down from each step. Helmed by general contractors Hugh Marsh and David Dorr, it’s a singular sculptural statement. “This is by far the most complicated staircase we’ve done, and it took the work of top Valley artisans to get this result,” notes Marsh. “It’s our biggest source of pride on this project.”
The showstopping staircase, combined with the removal of select walls, helped create more spacious and airy public spaces. Both were necessary interventions, the clients felt, as the existing ceiling on the main level tops out at just 8 feet. This time, the design team’s solution was to simply make it beautiful. “We took a lot of care to treat the ceiling like a fifth wall and to create something special,” Broughton observes, indicating the placement of oak battens to create a grid pattern that extends across the ground floor’s living, dining and kitchen area. (The treatment repeats on a lower-level living area’s ceiling as well.) A striking use of color, from bold black to blues and teals, establishes moments of cheer and drama between the wood-lined framework of the flooring and ceiling. See the geometric-patterned, blue-green chenille of the dining banquette and the nearby bar’s cerulean cabinetry; or look to the living area fireplace wall sheathed in a slab of black granite, as well as the kitchen’s blackstained cabinetry crowned by a gold hood.
But it’s the homeowners’ private quarters, expanding across the entire third-floor apex of the structure’s “A,” that became the exclamation mark of this house—a quiet one, that is. A sleek, custom black steel fireplace provides warmth to the neutral-toned bedroom’s seating and sleeping areas, which are tucked under opposite dormers. “We softened the angular architecture with subtly curved furnishings,” says Broughton of the space’s retreat-like ambience. The primary bathroom continues the away-fromit-all aesthetic with a freestanding tub poised to contemplate the northern landscape. “Our job is to delight our clients and give them things they didn’t even know they needed,” Broughton concludes. And here, the result definitely encourages lingering.

After a number of years living in Japan, China and other Asian countries, one family felt the call of the Rockies—specifically of Snowmass Village, a place they’d frequented on vacation and where they’d owned a condo before. When relocating to the U.S., the dwelling they chose for themselves and their two sons offered the room to breathe they were seeking, alongside magnificent views from the Continental Divide to the ski resort’s famed Hanging Valley Wall. The 1970s-built residence, however, begged for updates. The owners planned a renovation and engaged general contractors Jess Robison and Jack Wheeler to spearhead the effort. But on deeper assessment, it quickly became apparent that it would be too difficult to modernize the existing house to meet current structural and energy standards. Starting over made the most sense, recalls architect Brian Beazley, though he took pains to honor the original home’s footprint. “It was sighted quite well and had a good relationship to the street,” he recalls. “By reconfiguring the layout, we could really capture and capitalize on the views from the main living space, which was exciting for our clients.”
Once new construction was on the table, the homeowners brought forward specific ideas about flow. “They wanted to infuse some of the design principles they’d learned about while living in Japan into the architecture,” Beazley explains. For example, they desired an open floor plan with a clear path from the entry to the back of the house, so energy could circulate freely. Gathering spaces, the ability to entertain guests and plenty of indoor-outdoor connections to make the most of the Coloradan surroundings were important to the family too, as were large windows to usher in natural light and frame the mountain tableau. And to honor their Baltic roots and love of Scandinavian and Nordic countries, the owners also wanted to infuse elements of Scandinavian design: a minimal, clean approach emphasizing the beauty of functionality through simple lines and natural materials. The overarching aesthetic became Japandi—a portmanteau of Japanese and Scandi—
to create a cohesive dwelling. Beazley developed a layout that elevates the main living spaces to the second floor, capitalizing on the stunning views, with the sons’ bedrooms and a family room below. A spacious primary suite imagined as an in-home retreat for the owners is also on the top level. In close collaboration with Robison and Wheeler, the architect specified a palette of white oak, cedar and hemlock, used throughout the home, as well as a recurring slatted wood motif—a detail derived from Japanese privacy screens. Trellis-like shading on the deck off the living area is a twist on this idea, too. Black steel accents emphasize the extended eaves of the roof and play up the architecture’s clean lines while the use of lighter wood tones ties into Japandi style. And stone cladding grounds the home and helps it fit into the natural environment. Tiers of built-in garden beds that landscape architect Amy Barrow filled with native greenery enhance the effect.
Interior designer Abbe Murray stepped in to select furnishings that could complement the earthy material palette, punctuating an array of neutral-hued pieces with soft gray, light blue and pale green hues—quiet accents that harmonize with the surroundings and sky. “I like to be consistent with color, especially within an incredibly open layout,” notes Murray. Given the architecture’s Japandi inspiration, she also strove to include moments that celebrate the concept of wabi-sabi, a Japanese philosophy embracing the beauty of the natural world’s imperfections. “We used wood with extra knots or a live edge, imperfect concrete textures, and woven details with an organic, handmade feel,” the designer points out. “Japanese design and mountain living overlap in their materiality.” Art pieces and a few antiques the family acquired throughout Asia also support the Japandi aesthetic, while a hint of fur (see the shaggy sheepskin ottomans in the great room) brings a sense of Scandinavian hygge that’s right at home in the Rockies.
The new home feels transformative, shares the wife, especially given the smaller city apartments the family had shared over the years. “Every space here is so inviting, and I appreciate every nuance,” she reflects. “We wanted our sons to experience a place that really draws you outdoors to enjoy the beauty of the land.”
Another view of the living area highlights its soaring ceiling and plaster-and-stone fireplace. CB2 ottomans of Mongolian sheepskin bring in texture, while various pillows, throws and a Carl Hansen & Søn chair and ottoman add color.
