LETTER EDITOR’S

All Your Own Of the many design evolutions the past year has wrought, one of the most striking has been that our homes are becoming more finely tuned to what we desire. The interiors we inhabit are less showpiece and more a statement about personal expression. Honestly, after 2020, does anyone care anymore about impressing the neighbors? As priorities shift, our homes are designed with greater intention and with individual style emerging. In this issue, we turn to several creatives to hear how their flair manifests. This issue also celebrates our GOLD LIST: design professionals from across the country whose projects graced our pages the past year. We greatly admire the taste and talent they bring to their work. As for me, I’m a creative at heart who relishes nesting at home. I’ve been on-again/off-again painting my fireplace wall. I didn’t think too long and hard about the pattern...or about the effort! Rather, it’s a moment that sparks joy. As we head into this new year, I wish you much happiness in your own home.

A BOSS CONCEPT CHIEF CHICAGO

“JO RACTLIFFE: DRIVES” Jo Ractliffe, a well-known artist in contemporary South African photography who lived through apartheid in the mid-1980s, recently debuted her first retrospective, “Jo Ractliffe: DRIVES,” at The Art Institute of Chicago. The exhibition, which will be on view through April 26, features more than 100 works of haunting photography, video, book art and multimedia installations, focusing on images from the open road to depict human instincts and desires. “Jo Ractliffe's everchanging career shows the importance of thinking again and afresh about place and conflict,” says curator Matthew S. Witkovsky. “What is the character of a place—one’s hometown, one’s country—as formed over time by its inhabitants? How do we—as thinkers, makers, viewers—stand in relation to that character? How do we fathom causes of conflict in a given place; how can we address those causes in ways beyond or beneath headline news?” All of these questions seem especially relevant to American audiences today. artic.edu

AvroKO cofounder and principal. Among the spaces: A lounge with various creative hubs and break-out areas, meeting rooms, private call rooms with cozy seating, and a mothers’ room. Complementing Chief Chicago’s West Loop location, the design features large, factory-style windows, exposed mechanical fasteners and timber ceilings, yet is a departure from other industrial Fulton Market buildings with touches like floor-to-ceiling saturated colors and plush, oversize seating. Unique details such as banquettes for 12 around a wood column, a custom chandelier above the bar, and drawings and paintings by female artists inspire a sense of creativity. While the design of each of the three locations of Chief so far is varied, they’re unified by the signature deep-green paint—a color associated with growth, energy and calm, things we could all use more of right now. chief.com on view photo: west coast, 1987, © jo ractliffe, courtesy stevenson, cape town and johannesburg. a boss concept rendering: courtesy chief chicago.

ON VIEW

Here’s hoping 2021 will mean days of working outside of our homes again—and women leaders in Chicago have a new option in Chief. Going beyond a typical coworking space, this exclusive club opened last fall (also with locations in New York and Los Angeles) is designed to help female executives connect and support other women leaders. Applicants must be C-level or a rising VP in their company to be accepted. Such a high-caliber group demands a high-caliber design, which is what New York-based firm AvroKO delivered. “Chief members have access to plentiful office space between traditional offices at their companies and homes, so Chief Chicago is intended to be an alternative—an impressive and bold space to foster connections with other members, bring teams and guests for meetings, and pop in for the programming and notable female speakers,” says Kristina O'Neal,

How did the concept for a line of furnishings come about? CM: Furniture design has always been at the heart of my business and the core of my inspiration. The Collection is a way to emphasize and put up front what really drives me. Working in our collaborative environment makes it all the more rewarding. What are some of your favorite pieces? ZR: The Orbit shelf (top, right) and the Foyer Buddy scratched the itch for me to bring a different kind of function to the Collection. CM: The detailing where the metal and wood meet on the Element Barstool is one

of my favorite things about the design. Each intersection serves a purpose and highlights the inherent beauties and strengths of the materials. DS: The Franklin Dining Chair (top, left) is the flagship piece of a line I designed that employs the same patented, bifurcated leg design. The leg is adaptable to different contexts, scales and materials. Future plans? CM: The Collection is intended to be a constantly evolving entity. All of us are continually developing and collaborating on new ideas and we expect the Collection to reflect that.

Led by principals Seth Deysach, Andrew Kephart, Carson Maddox, Zak Rose and Dan Sullivan, Dock 6 Collective has been a one-stop shop for custom and customizable furniture for more than 10 years. “Dock 6 Collective was officially formed when we moved into 4200 W. Diversey in early 2009,” says Sullivan. “Before that, we worked separately in a building on the West Side of Chicago that was sold and converted to artist studios. The owner wouldn’t give us a lease, so we pooled our tools and started looking for a space that would fit all of us. I was just starting my business and didn’t have many tools or much experience. The advantages of teaming up with others was immediately self-evident.” Among those advantages: collaboration and feedback between the individual designers. Now they’ve come together to launch a furniture line comprising minimalist pieces all made either from wood and metal or metal and fiber, in one unified color palette. At their workshop in Chicago’s Belmont Cragin neighborhood, the Collective employs more than 40 team members, providing skills and job training to Chicago craftspeople. TRANSFORMATION THE LEGENDARY COOK COUNTY HOSPITAL IS NOW A DAZZLING, DUAL-BRANDED HOTEL

SCENE

DESIGN

If you didn’t know anything about Chicago architectural history, you’d step into the new 210-room Hyatt House and Hyatt Place Chicago Medical/University District hotel and never guess you were standing in a spot where gurneys were once wheeled through. Indeed, the massive undertaking of renovating the original Beaux Arts building, which was first constructed in 1857, was remarkably well executed, preserving the original masonry detailing of the façade, the wood-framed windows, interior decorative plaster work, the double-height main lobby, elevator cores and terrazzo flooring. More than $18 million was spent replacing windows and 4,160 terra-cotta pieces on the granite, brick and limestone exterior. The pièce de résistance: The 106-year-old restored marble stone staircase, which now connects the lobby and the second floor of the Hyatt. Architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill matched the existing valley gray marble reserved for historic projects, while Chicago-based KOO added modern gold-leaf sconces to illuminate the steps. They also created an intimate spot on the curvaceous stair’s niche, adding a chaise and framed photograph of Hygeia, the Greek goddess of health. Part of a $1 billion multiphase adaptive reuse project, the hotel also has meeting space and a food hall, and houses Cook County Health medical offices and a daycare facility. hyatt.com

SPILLING THE TEA Growing up in Shanghai, Cosette Liu worked as a barista and embraced the way the coffee shop felt like a collective space for story sharing. When she moved to Chicago in 2017, she sought to bring that concept to the city—and particularly to the artist community—with her new shop, Living Water Tea House. “I wanted to create an open and calming space for people to share their stories and learn about a new culture,” she says. Having traveled extensively to tea farms and factories throughout East Asia, Liu learned from local planters and the process of growing and making tea; she serves some of her favorites, such as Dong Ding Oolong from Taiwan and Uji Matcha from Japan, in her Little Italy shop. Beyond tasting tea and enjoying East Asian-style pastries, visiting Living Water is a chance to experience the handiwork of Chinese artisans: Think handmade teacups—including Shino ware, Jian Zhan and Dehua porcelain pieces—as well as bowls and plates available for purchase. “We often ignore the importance of objects that surround us,” says Liu, a ceramicist herself. “I want to shift the attention by making these everyday objects a little different.” livingwaterteahouse.com

The new Moda Domus tabletop line includes a full collection of Fiorito ceramic ware, doublerimmed scalloped linens, Murano glassware and candlesticks.

When Lauren Santo Domingo founded the online luxury retailer Moda Operandi in 2010, it was clothes and shoes—not place mats and flatware—that got her pulse racing. Fast forward to today, and Santo Domingo, a passionate connoisseur of beautiful china, glassware and table linens, has come to embrace her decidedly more “domestic side.” The fashion executive recently debuted Moda Domus, a tabletop collection for Moda Operandi that reflects a love of relaxed yet elegant entertaining. Luxe caught up with the stylish entrepreneur sheltering at home with her family in Southampton. What’s your new normal like these days? In the city, I used to love going out for coffee before heading to the office. Now, I make my own coffee and sip it wandering in my garden, often in my slippers. I haven’t worn heels in nine months. I bought my first sweatsuits, one from Cotton Citizen and a cashmere one from Madeleine Thompson. Though I can’t help but think of what Karl Lagerfeld said about how wearing sweatpants was like giving up on life! Ha! Although, it looks like you’ve found a creative outlet in flower arranging. Completely. I’ve gotten really into growing

flowers and floristry. I used to measure my seasons through fashion, and now I’m marking time based on what flowers are coming in, whether it’s hellebores or lily of the valley or sweet peas. I’ve been buying antique vases and vessels from auction sites. So, how did you develop your interest in tabletop? It actually started with the business. As Moda grew internationally, we began having special dinners for designers and top clients. We put a lot of effort into our tables and decor, and the response was amazing. The next day people would be asking me, “Where can I get this?” I also enjoyed the creativity. Designing the tables felt much more satisfying than simply putting on something to wear. Describe the inspiration. I love heritage pieces that feel like something passed down or collected. I would say I’m very inspired by my mother in law, who is very elegant and entertains beautifully. She and her friends have incredible collections of porcelain and silver from a range of makers and countries. Does that sentiment show up in the Fiorito ceramics? Yes, it’s a pattern I saw at auction based on an 18th-century

Italian design. We found the original manufacturers and asked them to remake the pattern for us in pieces our clients would use today. Each piece is handpainted in Emilia-Romagna. Tell us about the Murano glassware. I’ve spent a lot of time in Venice collecting vintage Murano glass. The wine glasses with the swirled stem are based on an antique set I own from the turn of the century. The original glasses are smaller, almost the size of cordial glasses; we’ve updated them to modern scale. How do you envision the collection being used? Everybody has the gilt china and fabulous wine glasses they got as wedding gifts. But how often do they ever use them? This is much more casual— the way I like to entertain. It’s perfect for a lunch or casual dinner. I don’t use finger bowls or have butlers behind every chair, so why would I want an ornate and formal table setting? Let’s say you’ve arranged your table in the country with Moda Domus settings. What are your guests wearing? Hmmm. I could see them wearing a great knit sweater, a perfectly tailored trouser and a small heel. Casual but sophisticated.

Alessandra Branca walks us through her Chicago atelier, where one room is covered in her new Audrey wallpaper in Cerise & Loden and the sofa is upholstered in Garda Mohair in Mushroom. “I happen to love pattern play,” remarks the designer.

LUXESOURCE.COM

Get Alessandra Branca talking about color and the pace becomes waltz-like, her voice honeyed. As she walks me through the luscious palettes of Into the Woods, the second collection from her eponymous home brand, Casa Branca, I decide to abandon my interview prompts and just enjoy. We begin in a sea of mossy green swatches, a colorway she describes as “a play on the classics but updated with pops of acid.” Next, we’re onto pairings of powder blue and chocolate brown. “I love ying-yang, male-female coloring,” she exclaims. “We never see enough of this combination, and it’s so chic and wonderful!” And finally, we move into reds, a signature hue of the designer’s. “It’s fun; it’s pop; it’s cool,” she muses, adding, “Red keeps you coming back.” As with Branca’s first collection, the designs—which span fabric, wallpaper and a growing breadth of home furnishings and accessories—are meant to be mixed and matched, interwoven with future collections and shopped by color story. They’re also deeply influenced by travel. This round, the designer drew inspiration from a fantasy brief particularly well-suited to the times.

“I love Italy’s Sudtirol, and I’ve been wanting to do an old Tyrolean-style, A-frame mountain house in a fresh way,” she says. “The question of ‘What can I do to update that lifestyle?’ is really what this collection is about.” Such pointed wanderlust resulted in patterns like Verdure Camo, a riff on the popular 17th-century hunting tapestries that Branca reimagined and spunked up by fusing traditional motifs with camouflage, and Audrey, a 19th-century archive print reimagined with bulbous blooms of exaggerated scale and named after Little Shop of Horrors’ leading character. Rounding out the collection, a medley of Branca takes on faux bois, tartan, stripes and peacock marble, as well as solids in teddy-like mohair, creamy cotton velvet and stalwart linen, create a cocooning ethos that does seem to tap into some primordial, back-to-thewoods version of luxury.

LUXESOURCE.COM

Casa Branca’s Into the Woods debut includes (left, from top) Audrey in Bolzano, Umbra in Bolzano and Giordano Camo performance fabric in Bolzano. The collection’s earthy palette, shown on the mood board above, was inspired by the northern Italian city of Bolzano.

Fortunately, the still repose of the past year didn’t hinder the designer—who describes a perfect Saturday as one spent amidst a stack of books—from developing the second installment of Casa Branca (available now) in the throes of the pandemic, not to mention, successfully launching the brand

last June. “I didn’t have to go far,” she says. “I literally walked around my life. That’s where this all came from.” Inspiration begetting inspiration, I begin researching the Italian part of Tyrol I knew little about before meeting Branca—and aching to redecorate.

Reflecting on my personal aesthetic begins with memories of my mom’s colorful outfits and red lipstick. I grew up in a world of color and pattern—French, African and Far East Asian influences. At home, there were art and sculptures, such as the pair of elegant felines that live in my living room today. There were textiles, like the chinoiserie print with golden threads on the formal living room sofa. I remember the effortless mix—not expensive or formal, but unique and just right. Growing up in New Orleans, you learn being different can be a badge of honor. I am unabashedly a girly-girl. My mom used to dress me in ruffles, pinafores, lace socks and shiny patent leather shoes. With my Coke-bottle glasses, you can imagine it was quite a sight. After my time in college known as the “sweatpants era” and a start in finance I classify as the “how boring can this suit be” period, I began a return to my true innate spirit. Fashion and decor were the ways to express my creativity within the confines of my gray pinstripesuit world. Perhaps the white Phillip Lim dress with the 3D flowers, high-heel patent leather Mary Janes and black tights weren’t exactly office attire, but I didn’t let that stop me from strutting down the halls and turning a few heads. My passion for the decorative arts and design shone through my home decor during that formative time. I had eight apartments in 15 years just to redecorate. Crazy, but so much fun! I played—a Hershey’s chocolate dining room in my Midtown place, peacock blue-painted walls and ceiling in the Uptown bedroom, and even the perfect white in my highrise bachelorette pad. I spent years experimenting on myself—a big reason why I am unafraid to be bold in my work today.

Billy Ceglia in the sitting room of his client’s home in Armonk, New York.

Billy Ceglia True inherent style is an unerring and unapologetic point of view that can be translated into every aspect of an individual’s life. It informs everything the possessor does and has—from the way they answer the phone, welcome you into their home, dress, and of course, decorate their living spaces. In my own homes, I try to create a sense of ease and comfort to welcome guests—adopting small details like leaving the door unlocked and arranging empty hangers in the coat closet for their garments. I have a “help yourself ” attitude when it comes to refreshments or anything in my home. If you need it, it’s yours for the taking. Since I adhere to such a tight design lexicon of simple materials and shapes, and a relatively limited color palette, it has jokingly been said that my favorite color is “plain”—and I happily own that. While I appreciate the ornate and complex, my personal preference always circles back to a level of simplicity with a touch of the unexpected or tongue-in-cheek. It could be a few books with funny titles, such as Avery Monsen’s All My Friends Are Dead (a particular favorite), or a subtly subversive piece of art in an otherwise sober room. These same details are also a part of my wardrobe. What appears to be a classic menswear pattern could be made up of thousands of cartoon mice, or the lining of a jacket could be painted with illustrations from Albert Lamorisse’s The Red Balloon, with a secret message under the collar to “follow me.” Similar to my streamlined fashion choices, my interiors are filled with simple and practical fabrics, tailored furniture and timeless details that reflect an enduring point of view. This leaves room for my personality, which is neither “plain” nor uncomplicated!

Noz Nozawa

Noz Nozawa with her French bulldog, Vivienne, in her San Francisco apartment.

LUXESOURCE.COM

It never occurred to me that my box of a city condo would become a homey shrine to my collection of eccentric things. A decade ago, I was in my early 20s, flailing in the aftermath of the recession and searching for a place to buy when my mom sold my childhood home. The panging feeling of my foundation being uprooted while simultaneously my family having no home of our own stuck with me. I think it’s why, despite my dreams of moving into an iconic San Francisco Victorian, I remain in my developer-built flat. As a result, a big part of how my style manifests is working within limitations. I like testing and pushing boundaries to see how many colors and patterns a room can handle before it feels uncomfortable. When I allowed myself to use my home as a canvas for experimentation, a new part of my creative brain unlocked. I found a 19th-century French sideboard to use as a bar and installed modern built-ins around it marrying my home’s modern lines with my love of antiquity. With decorative artist Caroline Lizarraga, I created a “conspicuous camouflage” mural on the walls with gilded brush lines. Then I had the idea for cartoonish tapestry-inspired blobby drapes and collaborated with artist Isa Beniston to bring funny dragons and lions to life in my windows. A defining moment early in my career was when I read that one of the ottoman seats in a room designed by Ken Fulk on a magazine cover was sourced from Costco. I thought, “His projects have budgets I can barely imagine, but he chose to leave that piece in!” It reaffirmed my principles: Keep what you love, work with things that don’t need replacement, put nothing on a pedestal and check your humility.

Jenny Brown

I’ll never forget the excitement when a bag of hand-me-downs from Wendy, a family friend, would appear on our kitchen table. On one occasion, the bag contained a powder pink tracksuit, the kind popular in the ’80s, and a far departure from the smocked Laura Ashley or appliqued Florence Eiseman dresses I normally donned for a special event. Ready for my best friend’s birthday party, I descended our staircase channeling my inner Wendy in the ensemble—my mousy brown hair newly coiffed with bangs and big glasses. Cloaked in the confidence of looking and feeling great, in my mind, I had arrived. Growing up in Lake Forest, Illinois, where architect David Adler was the patron saint and understated elegance reigned supreme, I was raised to appreciate the relaxed formality of my parents, my grandmother and their friends. While their homes were beautifully decorated, if you looked hard enough you would find an element of humor and whimsy. From miniature model rooms tucked within a library bookshelf and ladybug wallpaper adorning a formal powder room to miles of chintz covering windows and chairs, these houses reflected the confident ease of lives well lived and taught me to appreciate patina over polish. Real style does not seek the approval of others. It is the creative expression of those who possess it and have the confidence and joie de vivre to pull it off. Looking at photos from that birthday party where I’m wearing the powder pink tracksuit, I confess, I now prefer the pretty dresses my friends wore, though I am grateful for the encouragement from my parents to explore my own tastes. It is more than OK to stand out in a crowd.

Gestural Meaning Carmen Neely’s artwork is not just a purely aesthetic object. Personal experiences, including being female, Black and American, all inform her work. Behind every brushstroke and color choice is intention and intuition, which stem directly from those experiences. Emotions of heartbreak (the impetus for the work shown above), disappointment, optimism, anger and joy are all equally important tools she employs in her work, as are the oil paints and physical ephemera that adorn her canvases.

Portrait Mode The formation of bold, rich contrasts of color depict beautiful Black women in Grace Lynne Haynes’ paintings. While learned visual rhetoric often associates light and dark with good and evil, Haynes sees the disparity in the shades on the canvas as more harmonious than divisive. As for the subjects, the artist is determined to show her figures as graceful, demure and strong—the kind of complex attributes that Black women traditionally have not been afforded.

Color packs a punch—especially in kitchens and baths, where a little fresh thinking goes a long way. Today’s au courant designs lean toward one lush hue: green. While associated with nature, the tone also evokes feelings of abundance, serenity, peace and security—all elements we could use right now (and always) in our homes. For designer Raili Clasen, a saturated forest-like shade served as a reference to the past when updating this kitchen in a historic California residence. “It’s an old-world color that seemed right at home in a new build,” says Clasen.

Raili Clasen chose Benjamin Moore’s Hunter Green for the cabinetry in this Coronado, California, kitchen she designed with architect Eric Olsen. Buster + Punch hardware and a Regulator faucet by Waterworks provide pretty brass accents while Community Manufacturing stools offer plush and stylish seating.

PAST & PRESENT RAILI CLASEN

Coronado, the beautiful stretch of land off San Diego, has a storied history as both a resort town to the stars as well as an aviation and naval hub since the early 20 th century. So, when Raili Clasen’s clients asked her to renovate a dilapidated 1927 Dutch Farmhouse on the island that had once belonged to a Navy sea captain, she knew she wanted the design to nod to the home’s traditional roots. railicadesign.com How did you decide on that shade of green for the kitchen cabinetry? As with any vintage home renovation, I feel I have a responsibility to not turn the house into something it isn’t. For me, that means updating the space without it being modern. In terms of paint, I also wanted something somewhat unexpected and this green looked as though it could have been original to the residence—an ‘old’ color that worked wonderfully in the kitchen. Talk to us about the other materials you incorporated. We brought in reclaimed wood for the ceiling, which added a richness to the room while the waterfall marble island provided a light and bright element. Brass accents including the hardware, faucet and backsplash are really a reference to nautical tools and instruments, but they look so lovely with the green cabinetry.

In the dining area, Oscar pendants by Roman and Williams suspend above a Nickey Kehoe table surrounded by both Sawkille Co. and Nickey Kehoe seating.

Where is this dining space located? The kitchen, dining room and living room are actually part of one large area. I still love the open floor plan! Whenever I can, I try to bring nature inside, and the large planters under the windows have brass details that tie everything together. Things need friends, so the greenery here also references the paint used in the kitchen.

PRO TAKE MICK DE GIULIO

Mick De Giulio worked with Michael Abraham Architecture and designer Michael del Piero to create this sleek kitchen in Roselle, Illinois. The Juxtapose Semi-Professional Faucet in Matte Black by Mick De Giulio for Kallista features a pull-down spray head and Boost technology that increases water flow (shown here with Soap Dispenser).

LUXESOURCE.COM

For an elegant yet hardworking kitchen, look no further than Mick De Giulio, who has crafted award-winning spaces for more than 45 years and can teach us a thing or two about form and function. For his latest collaboration with Kallista, the designer kept technology and aesthetics top of mind when creating the Juxtapose collection, which includes a professional kitchen faucet with advanced cleaning features like Sweep spray and Boost. De Giulio focused on streamlined proportions and elegant aesthetics that fold a faucet into a room rather than make it a focal point. Take this Roselle, Illinois, project—a master class in mixed materials and refined touches. Various applications of stainless steel on the hood, countertops and hardware add a richness and reflection, while the iceberg quartzite backsplash keeps the mood light and airy. degiuliodesign.com; kallista.com

NATURAL INSTINCT CAITLIN MURRAY

“The most important principle in design for me is creating a space that you feel good living in every day,” says Caitlin Murray of Black Lacquer Design. But sometimes that idea can be interpreted in very different ways. Take, for example, this Redondo Beach, California, home, where Murray’s husband-and-wife clients had varying desires: One favored Hollywood Regency style and pattern while the other preferred a clean, tonal aesthetic. Eventually they landed on a fun, playful vibe in the powder room space, which Murray transformed into a jewel box of color and charm. No doubt, a win-win! blacklacquerdesign.com Where did you start? Everything was designed around the wallpaper. The clients travel to China and have a business there, so it was important to include something that referenced this connection. The Timorous Beasties wallcovering has such pretty patterning and motifs, which felt like the right fit to the homeowners. I’m always pushing for color, so I was thrilled it worked out!

The blue-and-green palette with pops of red works so well here. I think of greens and blues as reading neutral, so I’m usually able to convince clients to go for these colors. Besides, who doesn’t want to be surrounded by tones found in nature?

LUXESOURCE.COM

photo: jessica alexander.

Speaking of color, how do approach it within your designs? I like to mentally establish a palette in my head, because I think that if you don’t stay within certain constraints, the scheme can feel all over the place and disconnected. Here, I used the wallpaper as a road map for the other elements in the bathroom, including the Vola red faucet.

“We wanted to create something that would differentiate itself from the sea of gray vanities out there,” explains head designer Mario Muto of his company, Bemma, which he cofounded with Wetstyle owner Mark Wolinsky. Bemma offers an assortment of bathroom vanities and accessories in several colors and styles that goes beyond the expected, such as the handsome Terra collection (shown). It features a fluted walnut façade, marble or granite countertop, and satin brass base (also available in brushed nickel or matte black). Distinct, indeed. bemmadesign.com

Boutique property development firm Banda offers search, development and interior design under one roof. At Leinster Square, a newly renovated London townhouse, the firm’s elegantly laid-back ethos is on proud display in the dining and reception rooms, where matte-finish paneled walls set the stage for abstract artworks, sensuous sculptures and marble statement pieces.

MAN ABOUT TOWN

There’s something universally captivating about a derelict building with a story to tell. Such was the line of thought that sparked a then-23-year-old Edo Mapelli Mozzi to found Banda, his boutique, London development firm specializing in converting unconventional character properties into bespoke residences. Fifteen years later, with projects sprinkled across the globe and a growing interior design wing (not to mention, a recent marriage to England’s Princess Beatrice of York), Mapelli Mozzi expounds on his distinct vision of residential luxury. bandaproperty.co.uk

In a name: Banda translates to “house” in Swahili. I’ve spent a lot of time in Lamu, Kenya, and source huge amounts of inspiration from the people and way of life there. I wrote my business plan from a “banda” in my early 20s. For me, the word conjures a feeling of simplicity. Design doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does have to stir emotions and promote well-being. Holistic approach: When I launched Banda, there was a gap in the market for a high-quality search, development and design business. Many developers take a cookie-cutter approach that isn’t true to life. Our aim was to offer something out of the ordinary with quality and experience at the core. Buyers want: There is a definite shift away from prime postcodes and pure new-build schemes. Our clients want personality through design, community and security. These elements work together to form a unique feeling of luxury. Market update: Buyers are extremely serious right now; there’s no window shopping. Likewise, sellers are motivated. Covid has put a lot into perspective and encouraged many to make lifestyle changes. One thing for certain is that properties with open outdoor spaces will be the ones that shine as we navigate this unprecedented time.

Formative influence: My mother worked in commercial real estate and used to drive me around to her job sites. I understood from an early age that how we live and work are intertwined, and how spaces can make us feel.

URBAN AFFAIR

With lifestyle flexibility top of mind, many are seeing the appeal of the pied-à-terre anew. Take the owners of this Manhattan apartment: a Connecticut couple with a passion for the arts. After finding the perfect part-time roost in a historic West Village carriage house studio, they tasked Brooklyn architect Sarah Jacoby with infusing function and romance. An immersive coat of Farrow & Ball’s Off-Black and a wall of custom built-ins (including a sleek compact kitchen) make the space “a fun and special retreat, not just a crash pad,” says Jacoby. “They met in and love New York. This is their ‘reverse country home.’ ” sarahjacobyarchitect.com

Old Digs: NYC apartment. New Digs: Colonial in the burbs. In her own words: We always knew we’d end up leaving the city, and when we stayed with my husband’s parents during the pandemic, we realized we genuinely liked the suburbs! When our lease came up, we pulled the trigger. Besides many coats of fresh paint, so far we’ve wallpapered and updated the kitchen. Eventually, we’d love to gut the bathrooms, but…one day at a time.

Old Digs: 1930s bungalow. New digs: Larger 1930s bungalow. In his own words: I recently got married, and my home was a bit small for two. L.A.’s market, amazingly, was thriving during Covid, so we struck while the iron was hot. I love a California Spanish Revival and our new home has it all: a curved staircase, grand rooms and great natural light. It’s so different (and exciting!) to design with a partner. It will be custom, curated and fabulous.

Old Digs: Downtown apartment. New digs: 700-square-foot cottage. In her own words: We always wanted to explore small-footprint living. Plus, we were tired of renting! Renovating during a pandemic (we’ve redone the layout and landscaping) has been interesting, but given our desire for a simpler life, it only strengthened our confidence in creating intimate moments and outdoor living spaces that allow us to thrive as a family.

HAPPY HOUR

Quarantined in their home last spring, Chad Dorsey’s clients had a revelation. The crafts room of their Dallas home was languishing unused: Could Dorsey turn it into a getaway for the grown-ups? “The entire space was inspired by the idea of cocktails and wine,” the designer explains. Envisioning a bar with all the glamour of a swank night out on the town, he devised a moody, burgundy scheme, selecting Farrow & Ball’s Brinjal to lacquer the millwork. Adding further sparkle, Dorsey designed a hammered brass and Calacatta viola marble bar illuminated by a crystal chandelier from a Parisian hotel. The result? An invigorating idyll when cabin fever sets in—one bound to delight guests when safe, as well as future buyers seeking the ultimate at-home escape. chaddorseydesign.com

Architect Max Strang amongst the citrus trees on his family property (left). A circa 1930s aerial photo of Gapway Grove with Lake Medora in the foreground (below). Adams Estate, Strang’s grandparents’ 1942 Georgian Revival home turned events venue (bottom).

ORIGIN STORY

In 1935, Charles and Emmie Adams left Detroit for the sleepy railroad town of Lake Alfred, Florida. There, they began building the largest citrus packing house of the time. Fast forward three generations and their grandson—Miami architect Max Strang—saw a unique opportunity for the family property: a wellness community. “It’s definitely a reaction to nearby development,” says Strang, who alongside his siblings, intends to transform the 500 plus-acre parcel into a high-design agrihood. “Groves were dying to citrus blight and being sold off to lackluster sprawl. We felt like we had a critical mass to do something special with, otherwise grandma would come back to haunt us.” Starting with converting their grandparents’ house into an events venue, plans were drawn for five distinct districts arranged around organic citrus groves and freshwater lakes. Units will range from apartments to estates, with styles from “modern agricultural” to “southern farmhouse.” There will be shopping, fine dining, a boutique inn and spa, a museum devoted to Florida citrus, a school, lakefront parks and community farms. Consistent with Strang’s portfolio, sustainability is paramount: Homes will offer solar-paneled roofs and geothermal heating, and rainwater will be harvested. The underlying mission? Build community around a back-to-the-land mindset—something Strang sees a growing market for. “Nowadays we’re divorced from our food and for many, it’s work to physically reach nature. This idea of walking out the door and onto a nature path is creating a new kind of suburbia.” strang.design

CRAIG & COMPANY “Ultimately, our goal is to make building a new home feel like the joy and the privilege that it should be.”

ARCHITECTS

JOAN CRAIG, FOUNDER AND PRINCIPAL craigandco.com 312.321.7400 craigandcompany

he former partner of architecture and design firm Lichten Craig, Joan Craig sought to establish her own namesake firm, Craig & Company, in 2018, bringing the same imagination, thoroughness, experience and open mind to every project she takes on. Armed with a clear methodology and approach to design, Craig embraces the uniqueness that each client and project brings to the process. “We have some clients with whom we talk and share ideas constantly … one who literally took a desk in our office,” she shares. “And then we have others who ask, after the first or second meeting, if we can call them when their home is complete.” While Craig enjoys the

beginning stages of the project, “when everything is possible,” she says, “the absolute best times are the dinner parties with clients after move-in.” With more than 25 years in architecture and interiors for residential and hospitality projects behind her, Craig has certainly enjoyed her share of invites. When asked to name the influences and inspirations that most often inform her work, Craig names “landscapes, views, art, light, space and character”—all of which are on display in her award-winning portfolio. Based in Chicago with another office in New York, Craig & Company looks to the future with anticipation. “My greatest success is building a culture and a team of dreamers and thinkers with extraordinary expectations,” she says.

ASK THE EXPERT What type of project or location would you love to take on or work in? After our first snowfall, I immediately think of Harbour Island, St. Barths, Naples/Miami/Palm Beach, Santa Barbara—any destination where the sun is hot and the waves are breaking. What are some of the ways clients can work with trade professionals to ensure a painless design process? Direct communication, an open mind and trust—the three most important ingredients for any collaboration. Is there anything else you’d like to add? I’m really excited about the new ways we’ve been communicating with our remote clients in this new normal—from using 360-degree, time-lapse photography on our construction sites to filming walk-throughs, to preparing materials and boxes packaged like a luxury gift.

FRED WILSON, VICE PRESIDENT ELISSA MORGANTE, PRESIDENT morgantewilson.com 847.332.1001 morgantewilsonarchitects

o two exemplify the phrase, “teamwork makes the dream work,” quite like Elissa Morgante and Fred Wilson. Architects with a shared love for all things design, Morgante and Wilson recently celebrated their firm, Morgante Wilson Architects’ 33rd anniversary. It’s a milestone the duo attributes not only to their partnership, but to those they develop with clients, consultants and their team. “It’s the reason so many of our clients work with us time and again,” Morgante says. Regarded for their whole-home approach, Morgante and Wilson draw from clients’ goals, but always with respect for the wider world in which we live. Hence,

ecologically friendly building and energy-efficient options are often on the table. “We take a multifaceted approach to design, capturing our clients’ aesthetic and enhancing the way they live,” Wilson says. Not surprisingly, they accomplish this through a collaborative effort: Morgante thinks of a home from the inside out, while Wilson looks at it from the outside in. “It’s an approach that allows simultaneous contribution to each layer of the project and delivers a unified look,” he continues. Both work comfortably in a multitude of styles, but if they had to name just one, “It would be transitional,” they say. A perfect blend; just like this husbandand-wife team.

ASK THE EXPERT What specific elements characterize your work? Light, balance and texture. Can you give me some key milestones in the way of your company’s success? Our interior design division has grown to become a huge part of our business, expanding the richness and scope of the firm’s portfolio, while providing a valuable add-on service to clients. In addition to residences, it now encompasses hospitality and commercial interiors, as well as the interior design of high-end model apartments, consulting on unit finish packages, and overseeing the interior architecture and design of common areas and amenity spaces. What do you feel has been your greatest success? 33 years in practice; 33 years of marriage; and three great kids.

hile there’s no one defining element that characterizes the work of Tip Top Builders, there are many standout traits of the company on the whole. “We help keep projects on track, on schedule and on budget. We also work with the best architects and designers throughout Chicago. Their expertise helps guide our clients through a painless design process,” says vice president Adam Masters. “We are all about creating the right team early in the project to ensure the entire process runs smoothly.” Sixty years ago, Tip Top Builders got its start in the residential market after completing a small residential project for a commercial client. “The home was

completed on time and under budget, and our president, Howard Dardick, had a blast doing it,” Masters says. From one home to thousands, Tip Top Builders has never looked back. “We love our niche,” Masters says. “You see and experience unique qualities on a project that you don’t see every day, and every project is different.” To bring all the facets of a remodel together, Masters encourages clients to join Tip Top’s weekly OAC (owner, architect, contractor) meetings. “Our clients lay out the pieces of the puzzle, and we take those pieces and put them together to create an overall inspiration picture,” he says. “The team takes our clients’ dreams and makes them a reality, with the client along every step of the way.”

ASK THE EXPERT Please name influences and inspirations that inform your work and approach to it? The talented architects and designers with whom we work; their creative process drives the way Tip Top runs projects. To this point, what do you feel has been your greatest success? My path to becoming vice president. I started working for Tip Top 21 years ago, during my summers in high school. Growing up in the business has helped me understand each position, so the day I became vice president was a true reflection of the amount of hard work I have put in. Can you elaborate a bit on the kinds of communities you work in? Tip Top’s main focus has always been Chicago and the North Shore suburbs. HOLLANDER DESIGN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS

E

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS

EDMUND HOLLANDER, PRESIDENT hollanderdesign.com 312.741.4172 hollander_design

very landscape has a story to tell. “We define that story by paying attention to three ecologies: your site’s natural ecology, its architectural program and its human ecology—the ways in which you will use your property,” says Edmund Hollander, president behind Hollander Design Landscape Architects. That focus on client, architecture and site is how he and his firm design properties that, as so many clients have professed, “instantly feel like home.” It’s feedback they’ve received regarding contemporary, modern and traditional projects alike. “It all comes down to conceiving of house and grounds as a whole,” Hollander says.

“We want you to feel a sense of ‘home’ from the moment you step onto your land.” Based in New York City with offices in Chicago and Sag Harbor, Hollander Design works primarily on residential and cultural projects, across the country and beyond. Recently, Hollander and his team completed work on The Kennedy Center’s REACH campus in Washington, D.C., for which they collaborated with architect Steven Holl. That sort of creative partnership is something Hollander values highly. “We’re always eager to work with architects, interior designers and homeowners who want to establish a real relationship between the indoors and out.”

ASK THE EXPERT Can you elaborate a bit on the kinds of communities you work in, including special areas of focus or types of projects? For us, the only consistent intention is to create a deep connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. We have done work for a high-rise on Park Avenue, a horse farm in Virginia and a sprawling estate in Hong Kong. Up to this point, what do you feel has been your greatest success? Our work has been the exclusive focus of three critically acclaimed books on landscape and garden design, and in the past six years alone, we have garnered more than 20 design awards. But our real success, I think, is the team of 30 professionals (three of them canine) that we have built.

Interior Design: Marli Jones, Rebel House LLC Home Builder: Mark Fraser, Fraser Construction

O

ver 30 years ago, when Larry Baumann and Dana Brehm were dating, they would talk about where they would live someday. “She was in Arlington Heights and I was in St. Louis,” Larry says of his now-wife’s goal. “Whenever we were downtown, Dana would say, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool to live here someday?’ ” Fast-forward several decades, and the time had come to make that dream come true. The couple had friends downtown and family still in Illinois, so it seemed like the right time to leave their home in St. Louis and purchase a Gold Coast condo in one of Chicago’s legendary buildings. “We fell in love with the Carlyle,” Larry says. “We had to find something to make it work.” They landed upon a partially renovated one-bedroom, two-bath unit that still had the original (i.e., dated) kitchen and bathrooms. It also had, to put it politely, very little charm. But the couple knew there was potential to transform it into the home they’d always envisioned. To bring that vision to life, they turned to designer Marli Jones. “We had done something similar for friends of Larry and Dana’s who bought a unit that hadn’t been touched for 40 years,” says Jones, who brought on general contractor Mark Fraser. “It gave them confidence we could pull together a team and make it happen for them.” The first thing that needed to be addressed was the unit’s awkward layout. “You couldn’t see the lake from the entry, so we opened it up,” Jones says. “There was one huge main bedroom with his-and-her bathrooms, and they asked us to carve it into two bedrooms and two bathrooms.” With these changes, the space began to match the grandeur of the building. “We wanted a more traditional layout with a kitchen and living and dining rooms, rather than an open concept,” Dana says. “But we still wanted to take advantage of the lake and make that the focal point.” To this end, Jones used steel-and-glass doors to divide rooms and provide sight lines to the lake. This design decision wasn’t just about opening up views

204

though. The doors also lend a Parisian flair to the unit, which hit upon the couple’s passion for the City of Light. “We had just gone to Paris, and we were in love with the whole lifestyle,” Dana says. “We’d stayed on the Île de la Cité and looked down on the Seine, so we talked about that with Marli.” But, Dana notes, it was also important to stay within the context of the Carlyle, to respect the building and views—and, of course, to reflect the couple’s style. “They’re both incredibly fashionable people,” Jones says. “They prefer clean lines, they’re a little modern and they like a bit of color. We started with that as the basis of our design. It feels Parisian, but we made sure it was tailored to them and unique to the space.” Of course, the European influence meant incorporating stunning millwork throughout— including the kitchen. “The kitchen stayed where it was but we completely gutted it,” Jones says. “We came to the millworker with an idea, and he worked on a profile and did a couple of mockups. We ended up with these faceted cabinet faces that are done in white oak with a granite countertop and backsplash.” Jones repeated the kitchen’s white oak, as well as its black and brass accents, throughout the home. “We wanted everything to flow from one room to the other, and it really does,” Dana says. “The colors play off the blues and grays of the lake.” Even the chandelier in the dining room perfectly complements the water. “Larry calls it his cloud,” Jones says. “Because when you look through the bar area to the dining room, it sits above the lake and just looks so pretty.” Jones finished the rehab and installation while the couple were out of town, which provided the perfect opportunity to showcase the realization of the couple’s vision. “We were in awe when we finally saw it,” Dana exclaims, and notes that the condo exceeds anything they could have imagined when they were just starting their careers and thinking about someday living in Chicago. Jones echoes the couple’s enthusiasm. “The opportunity to be trusted to realize a vision for somebody is very rare,” she says. “It’s a designer’s wildest dream.”

Designer Marli Jones carried the elegant moldings into the living room, where they create a natural frame for an abstract work by photographer Barbara Vaughn. The Kagan-style curved sofas by Eurocraft, Inc., in a bone linen bouclé by Opuzen aren’t practical for households expecting wear and tear. “They are meticulous; they care for everything,” Jones says about her clients.

“It feels Parisian, but we made sure it was tailored to the owners and unique to the space.” –MARLI JONES

Taking a muted, monochromatic approach in a Chicago condo yields thoughtfully layered spaces.

NEUTRAL TERRITORY

Interior Design: Gemma Parker, Gemma Parker Design

A

t the start of every project, designer Gemma Parker asks clients for images that inspire them—a move she uses to take their aesthetic temperature. For a Chicago couple looking to make a home in a new high-rise, their images didn’t so much reference a particular look as much as a color, or, to be more precise, a lack thereof. “The styles of the images varied, but the palettes were all neutral,” Parker says. Of course, a monochromatic direction brings a particular set of challenges. “When you go that way, you can either go clean and fresh or kind of muddy,” she notes. As you probably guessed, Parker chose the former. She saw another challenge, as well: Using the same color throughout, she notes, “can feel too solid.” The key to her success lay in finding just the right mix of neutrals and weaving in a range of textures and silhouettes for depth. As Parker was locking in her ideal palette, she came across the ideal combination of cool gray shades. “When we begin a project, we always look for a grounding piece that becomes a thread,” says the designer. She found what she was looking for in the form of an ombre silk Phillip Jeffries wallcovering. Parker hung it in the powder room—which, at first, may seem like an odd jumping-off point. But the logic becomes obvious as the tones, ranging from a graphite shade to a pale, moody gray, lace through the condo. “I love the way you can initiate a palette from a singular piece,” she explains. “And, if that palette is cohesive, you don’t feel stuck. You want your eye to be drawn out. You want your eye to travel. Especially when there are nice views.” And thanks to its enormous patio, the condo serves up plenty of those. Against the subtle backdrop, textural flourishes abound. In the guest room (which easily converts into a den), floors are covered in a pebbletextured carpet that picks up the dusty-blush tones of the grass-cloth wallcovering. A glazed linen on the ottomans bestows sheen and bounces

216

the light pouring in. In the main bedroom, Parker anchored the space with a mural of clouds behind the tufted headboard and placed a plush carpet composed of high and low pile on the floor. It is, she observes, “ethereal.” Parker also took care to switch up silhouettes on the furnishings to activate spaces. “It was important that the pieces spoke to one another but that they also held their own and felt unique,” she shares, pointing to square-arm detail on the living room’s generous sectional that’s balanced by the rounded form of the adjacent tub chair, the fluted detail on a side table and tufting on the ottoman. The move served a purpose beyond giving dimension to the room—with 12-foot-high ceilings, a range of forms and sizes ensure things didn’t feel out of scale or too horizontal. It wasn’t just Parker’s savvy play with tones, shapes and textures that allow the spaces to sing. Blessed with a raw space, she could craft a tailor-made foundation from scratch and amp up the visual interest. For high contrast, she chose a mocha-hued stain for the oak flooring laid in a herringbone pattern in the main rooms that stands out dramatically against the moody grays. Strong architectural moves also played into her vision. “Arches were important to the wife, so we made sure to incorporate them,” she says. “They delineate the space of the entry from the living room, creating visual separation but are also a classic architectural element.” Reinforcing the space’s rhythm is a stylish bar, but one whose function isn’t obvious. Instead, Parker designed it to hide behind casework and look to the unwitting observer like a stylish builtin bookcase. Similarly, a cocktail pantry feels like a jewel box, with floor-to-ceiling millwork in a steel gray and crowned with a marble-pattern covering overhead. “It’s an organic, playful addition that makes it feel special,” she notes. The same could be said for the entire home. Spaces that, in the hands of another, might have been lifeless are, instead, compelling and soothing. “We worked on this for two years,” recalls the designer, “and making it exactly what the clients desired was a complete joy.”

The entry of the condo, painted in Benjamin Moore’s Cape May Cobblestone, announces the crisp, monochromatic palette designer Gemma Parker used throughout. She placed a Circa Lighting lamp on a console table and custom stools with Edelman Leather-covered seats underneath.

Above: Parker collaborated with O’Brien Harris on the hallway’s millwork. While the built-in structure looks like a bookcase, it in fact conceals a bar with the glassware hidden behind decorative metal grilles and wine and bottle storage below. Opposite: Sculptural forms acquired through Armand Lee stand out against the guest room’s dusty-blush Phillip Jeffries wallcovering. A custom convertible sofa in a Pierre Frey fabric, paired with a set of custom ottomans, means the space is multifunctional.

Left: Even the home’s small spaces have plenty of visual impact. In the pantry, Parker covered the ceiling in a Schumacher wallpaper and painted the cabinetry, fabricated by O’Brien Harris, Farrow & Ball’s Worsted. The Calacatta marble speaks to the subtle use of pattern the designer employed to animate neutral spaces. Opposite: In the dining room, a Murano glass chandelier from Jean-Marc Fray French Antiques in Austin, Texas, casts a glow over the custom metal-inlaid walnut table. Seating comes from a set of chairs in an updated klismos style upholstered in a Romo fabric.

Right: “The antique mirror at the top of the island beautifully reflects the chandelier and the light in the space,” Parker says of the wife’s closet. A marble wallcovering by Lewis & Wood, which Parker chose to use on the ceiling, enhances the jewel-box feeling. A nickelfinished ladder allows access to the upper cabinets. Opposite: To create a serene oasis in the main bedroom, the designer turned to Simes Studios for a cloud-like custom mural behind the bed. Parker layered in subtle texture and pattern, including Great Plains fabrics for the tufted headboard and lumbar pillow. For a dash of sparkle, she added a Robert Abbey hanging fixture from Lightology.

BODY LANGUAGE In an exploration between the abstract and the physical, artist Pooja Pittie invites viewers to reflect on the energy found in stillness. W R I T T E N BY M I K K I B R A M M E R P H O T O G R A P H Y BY P E T R A F O R D

M Painter Pooja Pittie uses a combination of broad washes of drippy paint and deliberately applied small dots to create her layered works. Beyond the multiple paintings in progress (right), her studio showcases her other experiments, such as daily drawings with yarn and colored pencils (opposite).

ost accountants wouldn’t advise giving up a solid financial career to pursue art full-time. Pooja Pittie, an accountant herself, felt differently. Four years ago, she pivoted from the world of finance to focus all of her energy on her visual art practice. Such a career turn Could be a test for anyone, but even more so for Pittie, who has muscular dystrophy. While this serves as a great challenge for a pursuit that requires physicality, it’s also what drives the artist’s exuberant, abstract works. They tell the story of the ever-tenuous relationship between an active mind and a slow body. “My practice is based on this constantly changing relationship that I have with my body,” she says. It makes sense, then, that Pittie’s process takes its cues from what her body tells her. “It depends on whether I’m going through a rest period or an active period,” she explains. On energetic days, she might work on multiple canvases at once, beginning with big, dripping brushstrokes of thin, watered-down paint that capture the movement she’s experiencing. On days when she feels tired but still creative, she focuses on individual paintings, making smaller, more intricate markings like lines and dots. Pittie, who is self-taught, says her unabashed use of color comes from growing up in India. “Being surrounded by color there makes me not afraid to use it,” she says. “Color is what excites me the most.” Even her black-andwhite paintings comprise shades that Pittie achieves from mixing pigments. And, as she explores different directions, she thrives on the challenge of working with a neutral palette. “I think one of the attributes of being self-taught is you have to constantly challenge yourself,” she says. “I can make this really colorful painting, but what do I do when I take all that vibrancy away? Can I still make something?” Above all, Pittie wants her positive creative relationship with her body to be part of the narrative. “I hope that it questions notions about disability, because it’s so empowering for me to make art.” Her layered works undoubtedly invite closer inspection, and that is essential to her. “I hope viewers see something of mine and are drawn in,” she says. “Hopefully they’ll be intrigued enough to ask, ‘Who is this artist? What is she doing? And why is she doing this?’ ”

Such was the case with designer London Walder’s clients, who recruited her to spruce up their new apartment on the 66th floor of a posh high-rise building near the Magnificent Mile. He envisioned a more masculine, traditional space—think moldings and wood paneling. She preferred a more modern milieu punctuated by glam moments. “Trying to design on both ends of the spectrum was an interesting challenge,” admits Walder, “but I think we did it.” To start, she took advantage of the space’s proverbial good bones. Walder enhanced the classic details of what was already there, recruiting builders Greg Szlachta and Marek Bajkowski to refinish the oak herringbone flooring and create built-in cabinetry and moldings in key areas. New marble windowsills throughout add to the elegance. But then the designer upped the ante, incorporating dramatic, often boisterous wallcoverings. “We took some chances,” Walder says. “I like the combination of elements that are a little unexpected.” The mix can be found in the front foyer, where a painting by Van Hoang, a vivid contrast between bold, bright colors and true black, holds court. A plush velvet bench with antique brass legs—one of many brass elements found throughout the home— plays off the silver grass-cloth wallcovering and silk ribbed rug, adding “that glam element,” Walder says. Creating a sense of cohesiveness, the wallcovering flows throughout the hallways and into the great room, which offers breathtaking views of the skyline. Taking advantage of those vistas, Walder placed the dining table near the windows and surrounded it with comfortable host chairs that encourage lingering over a long, intimate dinner (and—hopefully—larger dinner parties once it’s safe to host). After dinner, a night might be capped off in the serene sitting area, where the city vistas can still be enjoyed. chairs—a custom cocktail table with a red-veined Calacatta marble top, brass-framed art and a pair of brass side tables create warmth and nod to a city sophistication. As does the adjacent lounge, which emanates the old-school vibe of a cigar club. Flanked by alabaster table lamps, a contemporary sofa in light fabric pops against the walnut paneling. In the corner, a sculptural wing chair is paired with a delicate black metal side table and a metal reading lamp. It’s a place where a book or a cocktail should be enjoyed (simultaneously if one’s in the mood). “It’s complementary to the family room space but a little more masculine,” Walder explains. The designer changed course in the comfortable living room off the kitchen, where she steered away from the typical formality. There, a chaise sectional invites lounging and walls are covered in an unexpected floral-patterned wallpaper that adds to the cozy feeling and plays well with both the traditional kitchen cabinetry and a vintage brass-and-beaded-glass chandelier. While it makes an undeniable statement, the wallcovering is tame in comparison to the one in the office. It’s so striking that when the client sneaked in for a peek before the furnishings and artwork were installed, she felt a bit overwhelmed by the pattern. When she immediately called the designer to express her misgivings, “London said it would look great once the furniture was in,” she recalls, “and she was right.” Perhaps fittingly, the mood is more subdued in the bedrooms. In the main suite, a creamy textured wallcovering with a striped effect creates a soothing backdrop for an upholstered headboard flanked by streamlined side tables and a pair of alabaster table lamps. But, as with the rest of the home, Walder couldn’t resist adding a bit of the unexpected. An organic mixed-media wall sculpture by Jill King plays off the geometry of the newly added ceiling moldings. “We surprised the clients with this piece as a last-minute addition, and they love it,” Walder says. The result speaks to the owners’ wishes for a home that’s both comfortable and luxurious, without an ounce of pretense. It was a lovely backdrop for the owners’ fifth anniversary, when a private gourmet chef prepared them dinner while they enjoyed their new digs. “Everything just flows so nicely,” Walder says. “What a lucky life.”

A vibrant artwork by Van Hoang from Daniel Kinkade Fine Art adds a splash of color to the pale gray silk wallcovering by Area International in the front foyer. The two-tone cerused-wood console is from Universal Furniture and the mirror is from Arteriors.

A neutral palette awash with texture emphasizes the skyline views in the comfortable great room, where a plush sofa from Kravet and armchairs by Century Furniture surround a cocktail table with a custom, red-veined Calacatta top from Calia Stone Boutique.
