NEW YEAR, NEW TRENDS Every summer, industry leaders and influencers look to Las Vegas Market to discover hot news and top trends in the world of home design. Here, four interior design firms and “Ahead of the Curve” panelists share what they’re seeing in the market and incorporating into projects right now.

Noir Trading, Inc. Oh Mirror, Charcoal Black

Currey & Company Briallen Black Demi-Lune

BACK TO BLACK From the little black dress to a furniture accent or full black wallcoverings, the color black is never short on mystery or sophistication. I like to punctuate a room with a few black finishes, accents or hardware to create contrast and drama against lighter tones. Black creates instant elegance and can be used in any room. RUSTIC VOGUE + COTTAGECORE Nostalgia and comfort have replaced the previously popular stark modern designs. Rustic vogue is the idea of old and new pieces that work well together; ideal for a home with exposed beams, original floorboards or paneled walls. Cottagecore is rural, yet chic and involves a muted, pastel palette with patterns, along with vintage barware and gold accessories.

A D V E R T I S E M E N T

NATURAL MATERIALS + ARTISAN MADE Using natural materials is a great way to add texture to any room and can be incorporated into many different aesthetics. The addition of a handmade piece to any design creates a sense of grounding and embodiment in the space. HISTORY IN THE MAKING Fashion and interiors have always been intertwined and paired well in forecasting. Classics, rich organics and simple silhouettes are making a strong statement right now. Modern-day classics and pieces with layers of history mix well, while retaining the warm and embracing appeal in intimate spaces. Jamilyn Fournier | The Collector’s House Scottsdale, Arizona

This Side of Paradise

Risky Business

Inspired by a homeowner’s tailored style, a design team creates a timeless abode inspired by those found in the French countryside.

In Flagstaff, a modern design challenges the notions of what a mountain home should look like.

Painter Jim Graham’s interpretations of classical Dutch still lifes are a study in the fluidity between the truth and fantasy.

A black-and-white color palette and an artistic sensibility make for a sophisticated take on the modern farmhouse.

TIME TO GET OUTSIDE EASE OF LIVING As outdoor living environments continue to rival those indoors, designers are on the lookout for dependable, genuine and innovative furnishings. Enter, Lloyd Flanders, the heirloom-quality outdoor furniture manufacturer on a mission to enhance homeowners’ lives. With impeccable workmanship, timeless style and unmatched comfort, Lloyd Flanders’ furniture achieves this goal, seamlessly. Made from materials that look as good as they last, each collection is handcrafted from the company’s Lloyd Loom® wicker fabric, woven vinyl or teak—and never burrs, cracks or peels.

HIGH ON STYLE ®

800.526.9894 LLOYDFLANDERS.COM LLOYD_FLANDERS

Lloyd Flanders never loses sight of its centuries-old heritage, constantly moving the needle forward to meet the wants and needs of today’s homeowner. “We’ve seen a growing increase in the use of color over the past few years,” says president and CEO Dudley Flanders. “While neutrals are still in high demand, we’re seeing a significant growth in our brighter colored finishes: Denim Blue, Sea Glass and Woodland Green.” Another trend, notes Warren Juliano, senior vice president of sales and marketing, is the “new traditional” design style. “Consumers are mixing and matching classic pieces with bolder, more modern items to create a comfortable, custom look,” he says. A perfect fit for the Lloyd Flanders family.

A D V E R T I S E M E N T

IN TODAY’S WORLD, GOOD DESIGN IS THAT WHICH IS TIMELESS, ATTRACTIVE AND LIVABLE.

HERITAGE MEETS HOME Lloyd Loom® furniture is still made in the same facility where this special process was first developed in 1917. As an alternative to the then-popular method of wrapping cane around a frame, Marshall Burns Lloyd created a process where cellulose strands were woven into a wicker fabric. Each handcrafted piece of Lloyd Loom furniture made today uses the same process as more than 100 years ago.

Drawn to Design

As we emerge from the pandemic, we’ve all felt the need to be more inspired, by both big ideas and small pleasures. That led me to create a sketchbook filled with some observations on home and living. I’m sharing a page here that’s influenced by stories from this issue. I hope that you, too, will find your creative spark.

THE INSIDERS CHEN + SUCHART STUDIO

For husband-and-wife architects Thamarit Suchart and Patricia Szu-Ping Chen, Arizona offers more than just beautiful sunsets. Here, Chen says, people are open to new ideas, and the duo has plenty of those. They met while studying at the Rhode Island School of Design, but moved back to Suchart’s home state (Chen is from Taiwan) in 2002. Today, they are working on a variety of projects—a tasting room at an Elgin winery, a multifamily residence, their own custom home—but took a break to chat with Luxe about modern design in Arizona. chensuchartstudio.com What makes Arizona a great place for contemporary architecture? TS: There’s a certain architectural freedom that exists here because you’re not limited by an existing design language. We don’t do facsimiles of some bygone era. We’re interested in the now. Share your latest go-to materials. TS: Concrete, steel and glass. The latest thing that we’re thinking a lot more about is the actual quality of the building. A custom home can be exponentially better with energy efficiencies and air filtration. Describe your dream project. PSC: A preschool or an elementary school. These are spaces where kids spend eight hours a day. TS: Plus, we’d love to design a hotel in a setting where it’s really about the location and the architecture can focus on bringing that experience to the forefront.

DESIGN

As we reimagine the possibilities for our homes, MADE is answering the call for one-of-a-kind furnishings with three exclusive product launches. (MADE acts as a concierge between designers and luxury producers, and its jewel box of a showroom is like a curated Candyland for designers.) Here’s what’s exciting MADE co-owner Richard Wilkinson right now. maderesourcegroup.com

CHECK IN

Lithos Design The Italian marble company has launched a collection of tables whose designs are inspired by nature. The Petalo takes its cues from a flower, while the Elitra (right) pays tribute to the beetle. Taken together, the tables create an ode to pollinators that feels appropriate for a dining space. While available in a handful of styles, it is the artistry of each piece that distinguishes the collection. Creating a sense of delicacy from stone, after all, isn’t easy. lithosdesign.com

TERRA FARM + MANOR The only thing better than indulging in “all things delicious” with acclaimed chef James Porter is doing so at Terra Farm + Manor. Located 45 minutes north of Prescott, this luxury retreat sits on more than 100,000 acres of historic ranchland where Porter and his wife, Wendy, maintain an orchard, a vineyard and 9 acres of vegetables, flowers and herbs. Guests can reserve a weekend stay in fall or spring or book a private escape in the winter to enjoy what Porter describes as a “modernized homestead experience.” The eight-room manor and three-room guest house emphasize Arizona’s diverse offerings with details like kitchen tiles handmade in Tucson and custom-designed plates crafted by Arizona potter Christiane Barbato. Other notable features include napkins designed and woven in Arizona from local Pima cotton and chandeliers forged by a resident ironsmith. To all this, Porter adds a global touch: Much of the livestock hails from elsewhere, including Wagyu cattle and chickens from France. terrafarmandmanor.com

Chaaban In this line of bronze accessories, which is one of MADE’s newest collaborations, each piece begins as a hand-carved segment of wood before being cast in solid bronze and hand-patinated, such as the Toria Table Lamp (right). The resulting forms can be smooth or textured, a deep brown or gold in color. Of the pieces, Wilkinson sees the Hestia vase as particularly exceptional. Its color and shape, he says, evoke magma and volcanoes. chaabans.com

TALKING SHOP ABODE FINE LIVING

SCENE

DESIGN

With High Street in North Phoenix continuing to evolve, this mixeduse destination is getting increasing attention these days. And for stores like Abode Fine Living, which has anchored the development for more than five years, that’s welcome news. Owned by Catherine Crandall, the 4,000-square-foot shop moved to High Street from Scottsdale and showcases an eclectic collection of contemporary and transitional furnishings with a few nods to the old-world design that Crandall loves. The result is, as she puts it, a “treasure hunt” of discovery. Take a lap around the store and

you may spot carved teakwood doors from Indonesia or bouclé swivel chairs. (The latter lasted just a week on the showroom floor.) Pick up a beaded antelope skull (available in custom patterns and colors) or a sleek interpretation of a human head. But the joy is not only in the discovery; it’s also in the inspiration. Crandall, whose background is in banking and finance, makes a point of grouping objects and furniture in a way that inspires ideas. And if you love something but aren’t sure how it would work in your home, Abode offers design services as well. abodefineliving.com

COLLABORATION RH MODERN X LOREN YAGODA

The partnership between RH Modern and the art publishing company General Public recently added a new talent to its repertoire of artists: Arizona’s own Loren Yagoda (left). The Phoenix native grew up among architects and designers and subsequently brings a structural quality to her artwork with bold brushstrokes, neutral palettes and a dash of boldness. Here, Yagoda and General Public’s founder, Portia de Rossi, discuss art and who to watch. rh.com Your work has been described as “architectonic.” What does that mean to you? LY: Architecture is a springboard into form, only softened. [My pieces] resemble a site plan or a layout, except they are the spirit within the structure…the vibe, the environment or the purpose. What's your favorite piece in the collection? LY: The next one.

talking shop photo: courtesy abode fine living. collaboration photos: courtesy rh.

What other RH x General Public artist should readers check out? PD: Dustin Rousseau. Dustin and Loren are what I think of as “organized” in their approach to painting. The result is geometric and bold.

THESE DUOS ARE PARTNERS IN LIFE … AND IN DESIGN. AS TOLD TO MARY JO BOWLING

Balancing Act

Ben and Susan Work Homework, San Francisco

SW: At first, we were both skeptical about working together. Ben had a new architecture career, but in my interior design practice, I had a desperate need I knew he could fill. For some time he toggled between two jobs. After a while, we asked ourselves: “Are we really going to do this—be married and work together?” We are so aligned in terms of vision, narrative and goals for the client, that in the end it was effortless. BW: We respond to our clients’ needs and desires, but we are known for a soft minimalism—or, in some ways, a feminine brutalism. SW: I’d be the “feminine” in that phrase. There’s a tension that we think makes projects so exciting—it’s when opposing forces meet. Generally, Ben is more of a minimalist and prefers less adornment. Though I appreciate that, as a designer I like to get in and mess things up a bit. In the end, we value and find meaning in each other’s perspective, and it balances things out.

Ben and Susan Work at their San Francisco home with their dog, Toby.

LUXESOURCE.COM

BW: At work, we don’t have disagreements; it’s more like a merging of ideas. We might have two competing thoughts, but by hashing it out, they eventually merge into one. It’s more of a push and pull than a conflict, and it leads to the best ideas for sure. The end product is so much richer, and more filled with surprise and unexpected elements. SW: We both like to be strategic about lighting, and we always agree on unconventionally shaped rugs, streaky dramatic shadows, sculptural wall art and travertine. BW: She usually wants to put a banquette in every room, and because it’s an architectural intervention in interior design, I agree.

Kismet Connection Hunter Fleetwood and Mariapaz Fernandez

Fleetwood Fernandez, Los Angeles

HF: We met in a park in Washington, D.C. She had a Dalmatian, and I love dogs, so I said hello. In truth, I was smitten. A year later, she walked into the architecture office where I was working as a new employee. I was dumbfounded and remembered her after all that time MF: I really didn’t remember him! But we became fast friends. We had a lot in common from the get-go, especially both being architects, and we ended up dating, then marrying and then moving to Los Angeles.

LUXESOURCE.COM

HF: We both have a fascination with Los Angeles architecture and its spirit of experimentation and indoor-outdoor living. MF: I was born on the island of Mallorca, and the Spanish approach to architecture resonates here—it’s a natural, Mediterranean feeling.

HF: We seek simplicity. We hew to stylistically simple solutions that have informal derivations and a quiet aesthetic signature. MF: We begin a project by looking at a client’s rituals. We are more interested in what they do every day, and what they appreciate about their daily moments.

HF: Our process is collaborative. We come up with an idea together and pursue it. Married friends ask us how we do it without arguing, and I tell them that when we’re working we never disagree. MF: We have skills that complement each other. Hunter is good at committing to a concept or idea, and never steering away from it. I am good at spatial interactions and interventions.

HF: At home, Mariapaz doesn’t want anything in the house that is not beautiful. So, the simplest elements can become a project. We had a plastic Brita pitcher, and we wanted something more attractive, so it became a search for the most beautiful glass pitcher in the world. MF: It is hard not to work 24/7. We try to have non-work time, but work does permeate everything we do. To us, it is all one life.

Common Ground

Heide Hendricks and Rafe Churchill Hendricks Churchill, Connecticut

HH: We are both from the same town, Woodbury, Connecticut. We met at my parents’ house—my family was building a rock wall, and Rafe heard about it and showed up one day. We knew of each other’s families, but we went to different high schools, and we never met before that day. We both moved to New York City a year later and started dating, and we’ve now been married for 25 years.

Rafe Churchill and Heide Hendricks in the sun room of their Sharon, Connecticut home.

LUXESOURCE.COM

HH: When it comes to style, I’d say he’s more adventurous, and bolder with colors. I’m bold when putting things together; like hanging a Renaissance painting next to a modern Abstract Expressionist painting. RC: I’d say we are on the same page. After 25 years, we can walk into an antique shop, and she will be able to pick out exactly the things I like.

photo: lesley unruh.

RC: In college, I majored in sculpture and architecture. But my whole family was in construction, so I grew up in construction— I came to design work as a tradesperson. In New York, I started working on renovations of galleries and loft apartments. HH: I was working in publicity for art museums. But Rafe and I were buying homes, fixing them up and selling them on the side—that’s how we first started working together. It was my hobby before it became my full-time job. RC: In 2003, we got our first opportunity to work together on a project for someone else. It was what we called the “New Farmhouse” in Sharon, Connecticut. Heide joined me officially halfway through that project as an interior designer. A lot of firms offer just architecture or just interior design—and working with another firm can be a careful dance, making sure you don’t step on any toes and that you are speaking the same language. We have the advantage of speaking the same language.

ago—one stone on top of the other. We’re lucky as design professionals, not just because it’s an active market, but because it’s an exciting time of innovation in material development and production.” Energizing her outlook of late, Schicketanz has partnered with several like-minded prefab home companies on executing her designs. As opposed to trucking in materials and labor, the approach cuts time, energy and a staggering amount of construction waste. “Producing highly customized homes offsite,” she says, “is really the future.”

A home in Tennessee by Bobby McAlpine and Greg Tankersley boasts a connecting barn that doubles as a play area for grandchildren and an easily convertible party space.

In a sea of change, authenticity’s stronghold sets a reassuring undertone. Extended time at home “has taught us what serves us as a friend,” says McAlpine. “Decades ago, we were building houses that we learned to want whereas now, people are asking what the truth is about their life.” Adds Tankersley, “Clients are designing forever homes. I don’t think you can build more green than that.”

SPEAKING A R C H I T E C T U R A L LY RADAR

A strange thing happened this past year: Nobody visited. Stripped of show and distilled to domesticity, slowly, home began to look a bit different. If you ask architecture partners Bobby McAlpine and Greg Tankersley, it began to look like a country house. “I’ve found that people transfer more of their hearts to their second residence,” explains McAlpine. “A primary home asks, ‘How do I present myself to the world?’ Whereas the second home is all-eyes-off. It’s the truth.” Arguing the shift, the architects cite growing requests for insular amenities like spirited-away offices, accessory dwellings devoted to health and hobby, and outdoor rooms. In the same thread, they’ve observed a return to country home traditions of yesteryear in a departure from open-concept floor plans to “destination kitchens” and defined dining rooms, and in a fresh emphasis on workhorses like mud rooms and cloak rooms. For Tankersley, “beautiful, casual spaces that speak of humility” crystallize the mood switch. “I don’t think anybody finds ego attractive anymore,” he adds. With e-design now de facto, it’s an interesting time for realizing these shifting ideals of luxury. Architect Peter Pennoyer offers a robust menu of in-house services, from virtual renderings that allow, say, finish sampling under different lighting exposures, to 3D-printed resin models that are accurate down to exterior brick count. The final tier? Virtual reality, a custom, hyper-realistic model in the cloud that clients access via headset, allowing them to “visit” and further specify their home before ground breaks. The technology has proved valuable on the back end, too. “During Covid, we’ve had meetings between our Manhattan office and our engineers in Connecticut where we’re all ‘together’ in a house in Florida, slapping Post-it notes on a virtual wall,” he laughs. “I think it challenges us to do things that are even more special for each project.” Technology is also fighting climate change. In California, architect Mary Ann Schicketanz has been championing sustainability for decades. Net-zero principles are as integral to her practice as permits, yet looking forward, she says, will require a more radical stance. “We build the same way we did 5,000 years

Manhattan architecture-engineering firm edg’s custom interior wall panels and coverings—the first to be designed entirely by Artificial Intelligence—utilize a client’s design preferences and complex technology to offer endless options of visually compelling surfaces.

“I don’t think this is a flash in the pan,” says Josephson. “The more people see that this is achievable, the more people are going to want it and pursue it.” Creating surfaces with an interesting and compelling presence is exactly what Manhattan architecture-engineering firm edg is doing with its new customizable interior wall applications. While leveraged through 3D printing and AI technology, the firm offers “organic forms” consumers wouldn’t traditionally find in a contemporary box-like apartment building. “Living in a very ornamental city,” says the firm’s founder, John J. Meyer, “there is a natural desire to be creative when construction is extremely limited to brick and concrete.” Using hundreds of thousands of permutations from one algorithm to create these patterns, the options are limitless when it comes to creating wavelike, fluted or densely repeating patterns. This reinvigorated biomimicry reminds us that as humans we crave a connection to nature, and as interest in sustainability grows, the future will always be organic. “No one can deny in these designs that there’s dynamism and movement,” says Josephson. “The things we celebrate most, even in classical art, are decidedly organic.”

VIGNETTE: COURTESY EDG. PRODUCTS: COURTESY RESPECTIVE COMPANIES.

It’s no coincidence that fluted, linear designs are making a major comeback. Often visible on surfaces and architectural details—think interior walls, exterior siding, stairwells and furnishings with wood grains—architects and designers say the undulating design is a nod to nature, offering a soothing, pleasing effect that’s right for the times. “Many believe the art you hang on the wall is what gives a home character,” says architect Kevin Alter of Alterstudio Architects. “However, I believe architecture allows walls to have their own charisma and not just as a kind of neutral surface, but actually something that has presence. I think that is powerful.” The oscillating details create a sense of coziness—akin to hygge— and standout visual appeal, especially when applied to wood materials, Alter explains. Similarly, Jonathan Friedman of Torontobased architecture studio Partisans says these striking applications allude to the modernism movement. “It’s a mashup—a lot of different eras are resurfacing right now,” he says. “By looking back and resynthesizing them, we can actually reinvigorate the architecture of today.” The firm’s Fold House project in southern Ontario, which showcases an undulating pool house structure enveloped into the side of a hill, puts the modern organic concept front and center. Cofounder Alex Josephson says that as these sculptural forms become more accessible, they grow more popular in the residential world.

Inspired by midcentury modernism, the Venice Media Console from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams (top) features a mahogany veneer with a fluted shape in a soft white finish. Both Geotzzo Ribbon by Artistic Tile (center, left) and the Terrazzo Renata Fluted Collection by Ann Sacks (center, right) offer fluidity and old-world charm. Inside the central courtyard, light pours into the building’s angled windows, casting a bronze glow and dispersing dramatic shadows throughout. scottsdalelibrary.org

One of the surviving relics of decadent early20th-century New York is linked to none other than Gilded Age banker J.P. Morgan. An avid collector, Morgan commissioned a personal library by architect Charles F. McKim in 1906, which later became public in 1924. Three levels of books soar upward of 30 feet to a ceiling of ornate lunettes and spandrels depicting signs of the zodiac and famous contributors to the arts and sciences, cementing itself as an impressive example of American Renaissance style. themorgan.org

Libraries have long been a communal gathering place and beacons of optimism, and the colorful façade of the Chicago Public Library’s Independence branch is both literally and figuratively brightening the neighborhood. In a brilliant move of urban planning, atop the two-story, 16,000-square-foot library proudly sits four floors of affordable and senior housing apartments. A challenge in and of itself, John Ronan Architects succeeded in ensuring that the mixed-use building accommodates—and inspires—residents and visitors alike. chipublib.org

GOOD SPIRITS BUNSA STUDIO

Designer Jennifer Bunsa aims for each project to be distinct. “I like for the personality of my clients to shine through—it should really be all about them,” she explains. When the time came to renovate a residence in Connecticut for homeowners in the food and wine industry, devoting a separate area in the house to a beautiful bar was agreed upon from the outset. jenniferbunsa.com Where is the bar located in the house? The renovated room you see here is actually a connector between two historic structures that date back to 1790. It’s really the first thing you see when you walk in the front door. I wanted the shiplap to echo the exterior of the old farmhouse while the reclaimed beams nod to original wooden posts unearthed during building. How is this spot used? Because of the homeowners’ line of work, we wanted to craft a special space for pouring beautiful wine and stirring cocktails—this is important to them. The wife also makes coffee here each morning, sits down and has a moment to herself after the children go to school. I like to think this nook provides a calming influence at any time of the day. Talk to us about the materials. The idea was to create contrast within the room but to keep it elevated with warmer tones and textures like the charred pine cabinetry, striking marble surfaces and unlacquered brass hardware, which is used throughout the home. I worked closely with Amuneal on the design and they completely understood the vision! In Weston, Connecticut, Jennifer Bunsa incorporated a Vola faucet, Miele coffee maker and Sub-Zero wine refrigerator into the bar space she designed with Amuneal, which features charred pine cabinetry and brass detailing. Benjamin Moore’s Simply White decorates the walls; the leather chairs are by Bassam Fellows.

SHELF LIFE

Master fabricators Amuneal do it all—from creating doors and stairways to designing sleek kitchens and closets—but the brand’s sophisticated bar configurations are truly top of the line. CEO Adam Kamens discusses what goes into creating these polished vignettes. amuneal.com Make the bar specific to the space. It’s common to see these areas against a wall but Jennifer Bunsa took a look at every angle in her project and created a beautiful combination with mounted, see-through shelving that incorporates the rest of the home. Consider the finishes. Texture is very important and can actually create depth and warmth within a space. Shou sugi ban was used here, and we actually take the wood and char it, creating a very tactile effect. Fabricate a focal point. Concealed bars used to be very popular but now people are really embracing these elegant schemes and making them an anchor of the room. Mix up shelving. Amuneal offers open and closed storage, as shown here. Sometimes you want to hide the mess. Doors can create a nice weight, while open shelving adds airiness.

Working with architect Garrett P. Nelson, designer Jolee Fennebresque chose a Brizo faucet, Niermann Weeks chandelier and RH pendants for this bar room in Charlotte, North Carolina. A custom paint color from Eastway Paints and art by Sarah Helser from Hidell Brooks Gallery completes the look.

DARK MODE LUXESOURCE.COM

Jolee Fennebresque of Fennebresque Interiors knew that a moody statement bar was on her client’s must-have list for her new-build home in Charlotte, North Carolina. But it wasn’t until Fennebresque saw the Tropical Storm Quartzite at the stone yard that the scheme started to take shape: the honey tones of the countertops

complement a custom brown-black paint color, setting the ideal backdrop for the art adorning the walls. To add warmth, she opted for brass detailing unifying the hardware, lighting, sink and faucet. The end result is a master class in balancing elements to achieve a glam but livable space. fennebresqueinteriors.com

Warm Embrace THE SEASON’S NUANCED, REASSURING PALETTES UNDERSCORE THE INNATE COMFORT OF COLOR.

Color is personal and visceral, the perfect hue as cosseting as a cashmere wrap. Just ask designer Danielle Balanis, who swathed the walls of her office in an uplifting sage green and the ceilings in a sunny paisley wallpaper. Formerly the shadowy basement of her Mountain Brook, Alabama residence, Balanis made it her mission to imbue the newly crafted work-from-home space with optimism and inspiration, relying on garden-fresh tones and her collections of cherished artworks and antiques. “The colors are healing,” she says. “It’s my cocoon of creativity. I come down here, get lost and find my groove.”

WR I T T E N AN D PR O DUC E D BY G R ACE BE ULEY HUNT

“Mustard is my number one, go-to color,” effuses designer Danielle Balanis. As testament, buffalo check portieres, Schumacher’s Katara paisley wallpaper on the ceiling and gimp fabric trimming the millwork bring a cheerful disposition to her otherwise deep green office space. daniellebalanis.com

Raised between Istanbul and Washington, D.C., interior designer Sara Bengur has a unique perspective on color associations. Luxe caught up with Bengur in the vibrant family room of a Manhattan client to hear her hot take on hue. sarabengur.com Where does a palette begin? I start by going to my clients’ homes with a giant bag full of fabrics, paint samples and carpets. I tell them to choose textures and colors they like— no stress, no ‘where would it go?’—just pure instinct. The pile they create becomes my starting point. Tell us about this room. The inspiration was the Proportio Exhibit at Palazzo Fortuny at the Venice Biennale, which my clients had seen and loved. In Venice, you notice lots of layers and rich colors. The room faces east onto a courtyard, so I felt using warmer tones of red and orange would ground the space. Advice for the color-shy? There’s a big difference between vegetable and commercial dyes. One thing I’ve found is that if you stick with natural vegetable dyes, and combine similar tones, you don’t get that unnecessary stimulation.

REPORT THE LIVING

GLOBAL FLAIR

What shades bring you comfort? Growing up in Turkey and vacationing in the Mediterranean, it was layers of ochre, terra-cotta and turquoise—whereas blue and green are the calming colors of the west. I find it fascinating that different cultures have different views on what nurtures. Where are you drawing inspiration lately? Anywhere! It could be an artwork or a great dress. The other night, I was watching the movie Luxor, and spied this Egyptian ferry painted in the most beautiful patterns of blue, red and peach. I had to pause and snap a picture. I’ll probably end up incorporating it somewhere.

UNCOMMON THREADS

Naturalistic, multifaceted color compositions distinguish the rug collections developed by Christopher Farr in collaboration with British designer Gregory Parkinson. This year, ‘Intertwine,’ a new range defined by space-dyed yarns yielding dimensional color effects, joins the inaugural collection, ‘Woven,’ sampled here in Color Weave Kilim in Mauve Straw and Beach Weave in Ocean Jade. Each rug is made-to-order in Mirzapur, India, with the ability to customize across hue, construction, size and style. christopherfarr.com

PERFECT COCKTAIL “People think of our work as colorful, but if you actually look it’s quite neutral and restrained in a way,” insists designer Beata Heuman. Take for instance this London snug, where orange tigers prance across the walls and a theatrically canopied azure sofa stares down a moss green rug. Somehow, the tone is serene. “Generally, I do neutral backdrops with flashes of color where you wouldn’t expect it,” explains Heuman, whose whimsical portfolio shines in her new book, Every Room Should Sing. “In this room, the traditional order would have been plain walls and pattern on the furniture, so we tried to invert that.”

Another trick: Using the same white paint across a home’s ceilings and woodwork, a move she deems “really important to tying things together.” Heuman credits her philosophy to a deep-seated passion for art, citing Vermeer’s color mastery in particular as aspiration. “Think of his paintings. They’re all dark and neutral, and then you’ll spot these flashes—a white collar, a red lip.” Similarly, “every room needs a pop of color,” she says. “Here, it’s the red beak of the bird on the pillow, and I have to say, that pillar box red is great. If a room doesn’t feel quite vibrant enough, adding a tiny splash of it can really lift things.” beataheuman.com

GRASS ROOTS DESIGNER BENNETT LEIFER SHARES THE QUARANTINE COLOR JOURNEY THAT MADE HIM LOVE HIS APARTMENT AGAIN. AS TO L D TO G R AC E BE ULE Y HUN T

My dad worked in finance, but he was very artistic. When I was a child, we’d spend weekends at the tiki bar in my grandparents’ basement painting and drawing. In college, I studied art history (as well as business), and I’ve always admired landscapes in particular. There’s this pensive, thoughtful quality to oil paintings that I love staring at—something about those rich, botanical greens. Which brings us to Covid. I had become a bit of a workaholic, rolling out of bed, crawling into sweatpants, going to the computer, and before I knew it, the day was done. I was looking for a hobby, and I thought, ‘Why not try oil painting?’ I did a ton of research, ordered my materials, and set out for the park near my apartment. I have to tell you, it was … truly embarrassing. There I was setting up the easel with an instruction manual, dabbing at my painter’s palette. At first there was this fear of judgment, but pushing through that fear to the other side was really wonderful. As the weather grew cold, I came inside and realized I needed a dedicated space for my hobby. Rekindling my love of botanical green, I began refreshing my apartment, starting in

the living room where I got rid of my enormous dining table (since I haven’t been entertaining at scale), adding a tea table for meals and artwork in its place. Then, I began pulling in threads of green scattered through my home. My favorite decorative screen—a gift from deGournay—used to sit in the foyer where I never saw it. Now, it anchors the space. Similarly, I had a beautiful Tai Ping carpet in my bedroom, where it’s wonderful, sweeping pattern of green and blue was hidden under a mattress. Now, I enjoy it every day. I added plants and reconceived my art collection. You know those moments when you just feel chic at home? The other night, I was FaceTiming with a friend, drinking from a green Baccarat glass, and I thought, ‘I feel chic!’ And I think it’s because I’m living in color. Green is amazing: It’s that perfect lagoon water, that perfect emerald jewel, that perfect eye color. There are these few tones of green that just make me smile. bennettleifer.com

HOW CANDELARIA CAME TO BE

CANDELARIA DESIGN ASSOCIATES 602.604.2001 | candelariadesign.com |

Mark Candelaria, AIA, started his firm in 1999 after an 18-year career as one of the founding partners of CCBG Architects in Phoenix. During his time at CCBG, he worked for and with the legendary George W. Christensen, FAIA, who mentored Mark from the time he joined the firm in 1982 at age 22, until Christensen’s retirement in 1999. It was then Mark decided to go out on his own. Candelaria Design Associates has grown a lot since then, with a carefully assembled team whose values have become the soul of the firm. Mark and his team all share one passion: good design coupled with warm and friendly personal service.

candelariadesign

For architect Mark Candelaria, the process of designing a home is so much more than producing plans. From tours to Italy to cooking for clients, Mark’s approach involves accentuating and celebrating every aspect of living. “We are masters of designing custom homes tailored to our clients’ lifestyle,” says Mark, who runs his firm alongside principals Vivian Ayala, Meredith Thomson and Evelyn Jung. “The challenge is to also keep the design timeless. It’s a delicate balance, but we achieve it with remodels to 20,000-square-foot estates.” Collaboration without egos is key to their approach. “Our biggest strength is understanding what someone wants out of their home and creating a harmonious design that elevates its character and refines its flow,” he says. Higher ceilings and more light are typically part of the conversation. “We get to open up the home and see the client’s excitement, which is so rewarding.”

We want to know how they would like the space to feel and function. We want to listen and learn all about them. We always create a priority list as we start the conceptualization process. Concepts are transformed into drawings and laying out the spaces, then we make recommendations for materials, finishes and furnishings, creating a comprehensive design.

MOST WANTED •W ine rooms with display and an intimate place to sit •G arages with easy-to-clean, sleek surfaces, storage for tools and display of multiple vehicles • Fun and functional spaces, like bunk rooms

Most Arizona homeowners seek a connection with their environ, and a desert contemporary aesthetic translates this better than any other. “Through natural materials, color palettes or floor plans that focus on outdoor spaces, we capture this feeling,” says Katherine Mueller, owner/principal designer of Katherine Mueller Design. Likewise, when it comes to kitchen and bath renovations (her biggest requests), they typically involve bringing the outdoors in and enhancing the natural light. “Whether we add a skylight or large windows, it’s all about opening up to nature,” she says. Family is another big area of focus, creating built-in studies for children and outdoor play spaces. “Family-style living also includes pet-focused spaces such as built-in dog washes, integrated feeding areas and dog runs,” she says. In every aspect, relationships are the running theme at Katherine Mueller Design.

A big part of KT Tamm Inc’s renovation process is showing clients options when an original design feature they want to keep may hinder the project’s overall vision. “Sometimes it is difficult for clients to let go of the past,” says KT Tamm, namesake president and founder of the full-service design firm. “Rather than say, ‘that won’t work,’ we’d rather say, ‘have you thought of this alternative.’” Such a thoughtful approach speaks to Tamm’s understanding that every project has its own unique voice and soul. Through active listening, communicating and collaborating, Tamm and her team glean clients’ lifestyles, business needs, aesthetic values and budgets—all to create experiences that remain true to the original intent. “Believing that interior design should be able to stand the test of time, we key in on the longevity of our designs by mixing multiple styles with delicate restraint,” she says.

Change is in the air. As Arizona’s real estate market moves away from its traditional roots, builders are developing more and more contemporary-style architecture. This shift is welcomed with open arms by Paris Milan Home, whose 3,000-squarefoot design studio/showroom of high-end, European contemporary finds provides homeowners and trade pros with the perfect design solutions. “Be it for one room or an entire home, the result is the same,” says president Nathalie Chianura. “The translation of a client’s personality in the modification of any space elicits happiness and emotion.” After 28 years in the oversees furniture market, Chianura opened Paris Milan Home in 2019, exhibiting her curated collection of European brands known for quality, creativity and craftsmanship. “The value of Paris Milan Home is to preserve the European ‘savoir faire,’” she says. “Our past is our identity and our value.”

LIKE A CHAMELEON •F rom Paris: “As a designer in Paris, I worked with a client who wanted to create an opening from the library of his castle to his new kitchen. However, the castle had 39-inch-thick walls and was classified as a historic monument of France. So, I had to adapt, not only what the client wanted but how I was going to achieve their goal. The structure of a house is one of the biggest elements to influence the direction of a renovation.” • To Vegas: “A client asked me to see his newly purchased unit in the Mandarin Oriental Residences in Las Vegas. Upon arriving, we went from discussing furniture selection to tearing down the unit, from floors to walls, including a new bathroom and kitchen. This time it was about adapting the structure to contemporary furniture. No matter the situation, our products and services have to adapt to achieve the desired result.”

Paul Newman, president of Premiere Wood Floors, likens designing a home to a symphony, where multiple works of art come together to orchestrate a masterpiece. Flooring is an integral piece of this “composition,” creating the foundation for every design. With quality as its focus, Premiere Wood Floors takes its art form to new levels with a vast selection of hardwood floors in varying colors, grains and textures to make each project a star in its own right. “Whether old world, traditional, Tuscan or contemporary, Premiere understands the impact flooring creates and strives to make every home a work of art,” Newman says. In Arizona, design that flows from inside to out is his most common request. “This often requires natural textures, luxurious elements or details, as well as durability,” he says. TO MOVE OR NOT TO MOVE? There’s no question for Black, who vehemently advises moving out when renovating! “But,” she says, “if that is not an option, try living in one section of the home away from the chaos.” For a kitchen remodel, try setting up a makeshift one on the dining room table. Place a hot plate, microwave, toaster oven and coffee maker, and voilà.

n any given Sunday over the past 17 NFL seasons, fans who tuned in to watch the Arizona Cardinals play have witnessed the matchless brilliance of wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald at work. Watch him speak to the media after a game and you’ll see that his sartorial game is equally strong. The three-piece suits he favors are impeccably tailored, made of luxurious fabrics and fit his athlete’s frame to a T. It should come as no surprise, then, that the Paradise Valley home he commissioned would be similarly bespoke and outfitted to his personality. “I was blown away by him,” says Sara Doto, who led the search for properties and served as his designer. “Larry is gentle and quiet, with a dry sense of humor and a passion for excellence.” As the pair looked at houses, Doto parsed his style. “I remarked, ‘When I see you before and after a game, you’re wearing a suit and tie,’ ” she says. “He responded, ‘That’s what I love,’ and I said, ‘That’s what your house should be—a well-tailored suit.’ ” Doto introduced Fitzgerald to architects Mark Candelaria and Meredith Thomson as well as kitchen designer Christopher Peacock, who all quickly picked up on their client’s passion for fine details. “The directive was always that everything needed to feel right,” says Thomson. “There was an emphasis on great finishes, good proportions, privacy and capturing the view.” Adds Fitzgerald, “I wanted clean lines and timeless elegance—more European in design. Those houses have been in situ for centuries and don’t look dated.” With that in mind, the architects took the house in a French-inspired direction, in part by cladding the structure in limestone quarried from France after samples from Texas didn’t make the grade. “We had stonemasons on-site to cut the slabs coached by a mason we flew in from France,” notes general contractor John Schultz. Furthering the Gallic vibe are bullseye windows at the entry and tall windows punctuating most of the façade, allowing light to flood the home. Candelaria also

notes, “We positioned the house so you drive down a long road and feel like you’re transported to the French countryside.” The task of making sense of that backward approach fell partly to landscape architect Jeff Berghoff. “The trick was to allow the garden spaces to unfold and disorient the viewers from knowing they were entering through the backyard until they arrive at the formal cobblestone auto court,” he explains. “We created a winding, pea-gravel driveway and formal walls that embraced the cobblestone courtyard to let you know you have arrived.” Inside, the architects designed the home on an axis with a long hallway connecting the pavilionlike main suite with the public spaces and kitchen— designed by Peacock, who also turned his attention to the main bathroom and Fitzgerald’s closet. Peacock tweaked the kitchen’s layout, putting the range on a wall opposite the sink so that multiple people could easily move about without crowding. To enliven things, he opted for a mix of materials. “When we discovered the beams would be oak, the natural progression would be oak cabinet elements to connect everything,” he explains. “The goal was to warm it up.” With the structure in place, Doto, along with her associate Sue Lord-Peters, took on the interiors, choosing the finishes and furnishings right down to the luxurious linens on his bed. Doto went custom for most of the pieces, opting for simple forms along with a palette that leans neutral with the occasional splash of blue. “Comfortable furniture,” says Fitzgerald, “was a must.” Doto also worked with her client to build an art collection. “We started collecting pieces before a shovel went in the ground,” she recalls, and their efforts resulted in a collection that includes works by Larry Poons and a Tyler Shields photo of a dancer’s feet. “Larry said it was what his body felt like with his uniform on— that he did a lot of dancing on the field,” she notes. The home took more than four years to complete, and the team reveled in the luxury of time. “There wasn’t a rush,” says Thomson. “We could think everything through in really great detail.” The result fits as perfectly as one of Fitzgerald’s suits.

Change of Scenery In Flagstaff, a family’s vacation home is redefining the neighborhood.

F

inding a second home was a requirement for us when we moved from California to Arizona,” says Alden Hultgren, explaining that she and her husband, Hubert, wanted their children to be able to enjoy summers outside, not “stuck inside with the heat in Scottsdale.” After ruling out Lake Tahoe as too long a journey, the couple looked closer to home. “Once we found Pine Canyon and Flagstaff, we fell in love,” she remembers. Only a two-hour drive away, the location was convenient for weekend jaunts and winter holidays, too. “After living most of our lives in mountain towns, including Vail and Park City, all we’d seen were traditional houses, but this felt like a chance to redefine what you can build in the mountains,” she continues. “People are attracted to more contemporary homes right now, but they assume a mountain home has to be rustic. We wanted to shatter that notion.” Those words delighted architect Mark Tate, who has since designed several more contemporary residences with builder Jason Vedadi in the neighborhood, a golf resort known for its championship course. “Everyone has this idea of Arizona being desert, but a large part of the state is an alpine environment and there’s been an influx of younger buyers up here that’s driving newer design themes in this historically traditional community,” he explains. “What we refer to as ‘modern mountain’—places like Martis Camp in Tahoe—hasn’t found its way to Arizona until now.” Keeping true to his philosophy of “what makes a good house work,” Tate designed for the Hultgrens with as much glass as possible, “so you can always see outside as you move through the house,” he says, noting views of Humphreys Peak. (“Every window looks like a piece of art,” muses Alden.) Where the architect might typically employ flat roofs, he used shed roofs for snow. And he gave the exterior highcontrast siding to echo sunlight streaming through the trees. Because the house doesn’t read as a solid mass, it sits more comfortably in its surroundings, a site further enhanced with the addition of evergreens and flowering shrubs by local landscape

firm Morning Dew. “This is our dream aesthetic: contemporary, tons of light, minimalist and true indoor-outdoor living,” continues Alden. “We fell in love with the floor plan, but watching the home go vertical was beyond expectation. We knew we wanted a second living area upstairs for the kids, but we’ve been surprised at how much we use it. Nearly all summer the doors are open to the deck and it becomes an extension of the home.” For the interiors, the couple called on designer Lexi Lundberg to create clean but cozy spaces. (Alden and Lundberg knew each other from their hair salon, which Lundberg designed and where they even had a few meetings.) “I remember seeing the design boards for the first time and getting so excited. Lexi has an amazing vision— we asked her to help with everything, down to the sheets, bowls and soap,” recounts Alden. “The house needed to be minimal in decor but elevated,” explains the designer. “We didn’t want any feeling other than nature, so we kept to low-profile furniture and natural materials, with durability in mind,” she says. “They’re there to relax and enjoy their time—we didn’t want the interiors to require a lot of attention.” For continuity, she carried a palette of soft grays and natural woods throughout the home, warming each space with textural rugs, fabrics and accent pieces. “Modern lines but earthy elements,” is how she describes the mix, noting a trio of round baskets on the living room wall. “They help your eye go up and out. All the pieces play nicely together and just enhance the experience of being in the home.” Upstairs are guest rooms, bunk beds and play space for the boys, and the couple’s suite, a room so thoughtfully designed they can stargaze from the bed. “It’s so important to create a place—a vacation home like this or just a space in your own home— that brings you peace,” continues Lundberg. “It’s hard not to feel that up here, but we really wanted to create spots they could just sink into.” And they have. Outdoor activities may beckon every season, but it’s the house that always wins, especially that upper deck. “It’s where everyone just wants to hang out,” says Alden. “You’ll find us out there almost every night.”

Designer Lexi Lundberg created a loft-like feel in the upstairs media room of a new Flagstaff vacation home. To emphasis the view, she chose a metal-framed ottoman that echoes the outdoor furnishings and a patterned rug that reflects the lines of the Ponderosa pines. The modular sofa is from Article.

Left: A wet bar in the media room makes snacks a breeze. “It’s a fun space for the family to enjoy,” says Lundberg. She worked with architect Mark Tate to keep it clean and simple, with open shelving for a casual feel. Opposite: The dining room is “calming, serene and monochromatic,” says the designer, noting the framed paper artworks that add tone and texture. The table and chairs are from RH.

O Painter Jim Graham recently began working on a series inspired by classical Dutch floral still lifes. In The Florist (opposite), he’s created a collage of a florist’s process, from initial designs to the final bouquet. He uses various images and object studies as reference, such as a blackand-white copy of a vintage painting from 1955 (right).

ne wonders how the Dutch felt when they first saw tulips, watching them burst into unpredictable colors. In the 17th century, the Old Masters obsessed over these blooms, painting them in fanciful still lifes laden with other treasures from the Dutch empire. It’s hard to conjure the same awe for something that’s now so readily available. But the human instinct to fantasize about nature endures— and it’s an impulse that’s endlessly fascinating for Tucson-based artist Jim Graham. In his surreal paintings, Graham toys with our desire for exotic wildness while challenging our dreams about nature as a separate utopia. “I want to think about nature in a way that very much includes us,” he explains. “That we see ourselves as an active participant in shaping the environment and how the environment, in turn, responds to us.” The subject feels inevitable for the artist from Melbourne, Florida, his childhood having been defined equally by the coast and the fanciful imagery it inspires: Think mermaids and manatees, real flamingos alongside lawndecorating imitations. These two Floridas are entwined in earlier works like his “Coastal Lot” series, born after discovering an abandoned, hurricane-wrecked diner that “was slowly turning back into dunes,” says Graham. Here the human hand is present, palmetto fronds entangled with bird baths and plastic flamingos. Moving to desert-dry Arizona inspired him to narrow his gaze to exploring the classical Dutch still lifes. He’s drawn to their fallacy; these tabletop floral arrangements could never exist in real life, featuring flowers that bloomed during different seasons and in far-flung regions on Dutch trade routes. “It’s the artist’s way of composing and controlling nature into a single view,” he explains. His reinterpretation of this genre brings self awareness to this artifice, showing both the raw material and the artist’s deliberate act of refining it. He conflates these facets in his painting The Florist. It’s a collage of moments that capture a florist’s process: notebook sketches, scattered blooms being prepared on a workbench and a bouquet artfully posed in the studio. “This is my way of being closer to what I’m making and how I am making it,” says Graham. “I don’t want my painting to feel like a final picture, but to offer a longer view on nature.”

hile it’s not technically in a designer’s job description, a truly skilled one knows how to deliver hard truths. Kelly Berumen needed to do exactly that when a previous client brought her on to design his new home in Arcadia. What he had in mind was a modern farmhousestyle house—but Berumen managed to convince him otherwise. “I’ve worked with the homeowner before,” Berumen explains. “So I asked him, ‘Are you sure you want this style? Because I really feel like that’s been done so much.’ ” Instead, she suggested that they try something a little more progressive, and architect Jim Blochberger was equally onboard. “We started out design-wise with the character of a more modern farmhouse,” says Blochberger, who collaborated with builder Brett Brimley. “Then, as we got into the aesthetics, we shifted a little bit toward cleaner lines. So I would call it a transitional ranch with a modern interior.” The slate roof, stone exterior walls and creamy white stucco lean traditional, while larger bronze windows, dark trim and shorter eaves inject a sleek contemporary style. Berumen knew the client didn’t want the home’s interiors to be sterile or “extremely modern,” so she found clever ways to reach a happy medium. Certain details, like the wooden trusses and floor, bring the coziness of the modern farmhouse aesthetic but lend it a more refined touch via the use of rift white oak. Others, such as the 16-foot-wide steel fireplace and sculptural lighting fixtures, add that desired sophisticated and contemporary edge. “I wanted it to be a little different and an art form on its own,” Berumen explains of the lighting, which includes futuristic chandeliers and horse-hair sconces. The brass-and-black metals of the fixtures also tie into one of the home’s most consistent visual threads, carried through in furniture frames, bathroom faucets, window frames and cabinet hardware. While the home’s color palette is mostly black and white, sporadic bursts of warmth come from neutral tones, such as camel and leather. Textures like alpaca keep the minimalist furnishings

from being too stark, as do the many pieces of commissioned art that fill the home. “The client wanted every piece to be an original,” Berumen explains, pointing to pieces such as the abstract Jennifer Jones painting in the entry and the Kerry Vesper wood sculpture in the living room. In the primary bathroom, black marble mosaic tile continues that artistic sensibility, while the black freestanding tub infuses the space with a little “glam,” as Berumen puts it. “It feels a little luxurious,” she says. “He’s a bachelor and we didn’t want to be too feminine, but we also didn’t want it to necessarily be overly masculine either.” With his children now grown, the client wasn’t looking for a family house, but it had to be comfortable, livable and spacious. “He wanted it to be impressive, but not ostentatious,” Berumen says. “It needed to be a space where people felt they could sit down and hang out. But he also liked the idea of it being something conversation-worthy.” Keeping that in mind, she encouraged the client to go beyond his comfort zone for the kitchen. And the end result shows just how convincing she was: sleek hardware on the Shaker-style cabinets, a steel riveted range hood that matches the fireplace, streamlined marble counters and discreet storage rather than traditional floating shelves. The bifold windows, which open out to the covered terrace, embrace the indoor-outdoor living ethos that anchored Blochberger’s architectural plans. The home’s landscaping references its design. “We’re always trying to complement the architecture of the home,” says landscape architect Jeff Berghoff. “So we take visual cues and elements of the home to select materials for the garden.” For this project, that included limestone paving and a black granite water feature in the front of the home, with a sour orange hedge lining the property, and dwarf ollie, boxwood, iceberg rose, lavender and gardenias throughout. The home nods to the success that comes from taking a few risks. “There’s a piece of my heart and soul in there and that’s because the client really allowed me to stretch a little—he allowed me space to design, which was great,” Berumen says. “It was hard to walk away from this project when it was done.”

Bathed in natural light in the foyer of the Arcadia home designed by Kelly Berumen, Midnight Garden by painter Jennifer Jones sits above the black walnut Caste console and stools from Brady Gray Home.

While the ceiling beams may lean traditional farmhouse, the living room decor is decidedly sophisticated. The Century Furniture sofa and leather chairs gather around a Phillips Collection coffee table along with an ivory alpaca chair from Eleanor Rigby Home. A Jonathan Browning Studios chandelier illuminates the space.

Above: “We went for simplicity and sophistication in the dining room,” says Berumen, who kept the tone neutral but added drama with an Ochre chandelier and Chaddock dining chairs. Opposite: Through dark cabinetry and the use of quartzite from the Stone Collection for the island, countertops and backsplash, Berumen ensured the kitchen had an elevated feel.

Coziness abounds in the outdoor fireplace pavilion, with Palecek armchairs and a Gloster sofa. Further along the terrace, Gloster teak-and-stainless-steel chairs accompany the Barlow Tyrie teak dining table.
