LETTER EDITOR’S

All Your Own Of the many design evolutions the past year has wrought, one of the most striking has been that our homes are becoming more finely tuned to what we desire. The interiors we inhabit are less showpiece and more a statement about personal expression. Honestly, after 2020, does anyone care anymore about impressing the neighbors? As priorities shift, our homes are designed with greater intention and with individual style emerging. In this issue, we turn to several creatives to hear how their flair manifests. This issue also celebrates our GOLD LIST: design professionals from across the country whose projects graced our pages the past year. We greatly admire the taste and talent they bring to their work. As for me, I’m a creative at heart who relishes nesting at home. I’ve been on-again/off-again painting my fireplace wall. I didn’t think too long and hard about the pattern...or about the effort! Rather, it’s a moment that sparks joy. As we head into this new year, I wish you much happiness in your own home.

CHECK IN ADERO SCOTTSDALE

Following a $100 million overhaul, Adero Scottsdale recently opened its doors to an elevated desert sanctuary. The property is Scottsdale’s only Dark Sky resort, and the landscape accordingly offers considerable aesthetic inspiration. The Rattlesnake Pavilion, for example, is a serpentine-shaped rest stop open to the public and anchored by an art installation. Stacked-stone art amenities in the guest rooms elegantly riff on traditional trail markers, and the resort itself is named for a surrounding canyon. Ninety-five percent of the 177 guest rooms and suites offer panoramic mountain views. The interiors pull that landscape inside with a sunrise-inspired color palette and details that put a modern spin on traditional desert elements. (Think sleek black bedside lamps that evoke saguaro cacti and bathroom vanity aprons that look like hand-carved wood.) Other amenities include telescope tours of the skies, nighttime markets featuring local vendors and two heated pools. aderoscottsdale.com

IN STYLE Versace has opened its first outpost in Arizona, bringing its trademark glamour to a 3,131-squarefoot boutique in Scottsdale Fashion Square. The design, which was overseen by the brand’s store-development team in Milan, is the first in North America to be modeled on the Monte Carlo location. The effect is both modern and indulgently Italian. Light eucalyptus floors and pearl-white walls create a spare backdrop for gold-tone accents, Flos light fixtures, and furnishings and carpeting that were all made in Italy. Plush, marine-hued chairs sit below a plaster relief Medusa head—the reimagined Greek gorgon that is the emblem of Versace—in the ceiling, which appears to watch over guests from above. Her massive, backlit presence in the Scottsdale showroom’s ceiling offers a satisfying complement to the exterior, crafted from the same white Venus marble once used in ancient Greece. versace.com

INSPIRING MIND KAITLYN WOLFE

Where do you find inspiration for your projects? I definitely pull inspiration from nature. I love the desert, hiking, camping and visiting national parks. What should every home have in 2021? Integrated lighting, sculptural elements and natural materials. Natural materials bring a sense of serenity to a space, which you can achieve by combining natural wood tones, concrete and steel. Where do you see design moving in Arizona? Cozy contemporary. People don’t want everything white or gray. Share what's on the horizon for your firm. We just moved into a really lovely office in Scottsdale Airpark, and we’re working on a cabinetry collection due out early this year.

Kaitlyn Wolfe knew from an early age that design was where her heart was. Her head, however, was in a different place. Now the principal of Iconic Design + Build, Wolfe well remembers redecorating her room as a child and helping friends turn their spaces into homes during her college years. “I don’t think I knew I could do that for a career,” she laughs. It wasn’t until she moved to Arizona to pursue her MBA—after earning her B.S. in Biology and Neuroscience—that everything clicked into place. Here, she shares her insights on finding inspiration, the essence of luxury and the future of design in Arizona. iconicdesignbuild.com

ELOTE CAFE

“I’ve known Jeff for 12 years,” says Don Carstens. “It was time to give him a new stage.” Carstens, the director of design at Pathangay Architects, is talking about Jeff Smedstad, the chef-owner of Elote Cafe in Sedona. Smedstad’s reputation for exceptional Mexican cuisine extends well beyond the charming, tourist-friendly red rocks of Sedona, so Carstens teamed up with Pathangay Architects to deliver Smedstad a new venue. The result is a horseshoe-shaped, freestanding building that encompasses 4,800 square feet of space outfitted with furnishings and fittings as authentic as the menu. Case in point: the black-and-white floor tiles that pay tribute to indigenous blanket patterns and the 60-year-old, hand-carved eucalyptus bar top. “I wanted to highlight natural elements,” Carstens explains, citing hand-stitched leather seating and handhammered copper tables. The result is a cohesive partnership between design and cuisine that is rooted in Mexican tradition. elotecafe.com

POST MASTER @DIANAELIZABETH_

WHO: Lifestyle blogger and photographer Diana Elizabeth Steffen, who somehow manages to make gardening and antiquing look chic. WHAT: Embracing titles like “Grandmillennial” and “Modern Traditionalist,” Steffen peppers her feed with elegant interiors, enough greenery to belie her Phoenix address, and a sense of joie de vivre. WHY: You need closet inspo, a reason to start a garden, a new design haunt to frequent, or a quick dopamine rush. After all, if wallpapered closets and fresh flowers don’t make you smile, nothing will. IN HER WORDS: “I hope my Instagram feed inspires people to start a garden, throw an over-the-top party, have fun and be creative. I want people to remember there is no limit to the interests we can have and to celebrate learning and discovering what makes us happy.”

SET IN STONE WHAT’S NEW FROM NEOLITH WRITTEN BY LORI CAPULLO

New year, new Neolith: The brand that put sintered stone on the global map has launched its Six-S range of surfaces, inspired by the natural world and the battle against COVID-19. Designed to be solidary, sanitary, strong, stylish, sensory and sustainable, there’s one “s” that wasn’t a part of the Six-S range: sacrifice. All six offerings are every bit as luxurious, prepossessing and meticulously finished as traditional Neolith products. The Six-S range comprises Himalaya Crystal, an homage to the Himalayan salt crystal landscapes; Abu Dhabi White, inspired by the UAE capital’s Sheikh Zayed Mosque; Amazonico (right), which calls to mind the ascension from the darkness of the rainforest floor to the lighter tones of tree canopies overhead; Winter Dala, nodding to the pines that encircle Sweden’s Lake Siljan; Summer Dala, mimicking the texture of freshly cut timber, and Layla, inspired by One Thousand and One Arabian Nights. And it’s not just environmental consciousness that Neolith is staying in step with—the company also has a new digital platform, Neolith Virtual Experience, which brings more than 50 colors and finishes straight from the showroom to the customer’s home. neolith.com

The new Moda Domus tabletop line includes a full collection of Fiorito ceramic ware, doublerimmed scalloped linens, Murano glassware and candlesticks.

When Lauren Santo Domingo founded the online luxury retailer Moda Operandi in 2010, it was clothes and shoes—not place mats and flatware—that got her pulse racing. Fast forward to today, and Santo Domingo, a passionate connoisseur of beautiful china, glassware and table linens, has come to embrace her decidedly more “domestic side.” The fashion executive recently debuted Moda Domus, a tabletop collection for Moda Operandi that reflects a love of relaxed yet elegant entertaining. Luxe caught up with the stylish entrepreneur sheltering at home with her family in Southampton. What’s your new normal like these days? In the city, I used to love going out for coffee before heading to the office. Now, I make my own coffee and sip it wandering in my garden, often in my slippers. I haven’t worn heels in nine months. I bought my first sweatsuits, one from Cotton Citizen and a cashmere one from Madeleine Thompson. Though I can’t help but think of what Karl Lagerfeld said about how wearing sweatpants was like giving up on life! Ha! Although, it looks like you’ve found a creative outlet in flower arranging. Completely. I’ve gotten really into growing

LUXESOURCE.COM

flowers and floristry. I used to measure my seasons through fashion, and now I’m marking time based on what flowers are coming in, whether it’s hellebores or lily of the valley or sweet peas. I’ve been buying antique vases and vessels from auction sites. So, how did you develop your interest in tabletop? It actually started with the business. As Moda grew internationally, we began having special dinners for designers and top clients. We put a lot of effort into our tables and decor, and the response was amazing. The next day people would be asking me, “Where can I get this?” I also enjoyed the creativity. Designing the tables felt much more satisfying than simply putting on something to wear. Describe the inspiration. I love heritage pieces that feel like something passed down or collected. I would say I’m very inspired by my mother in law, who is very elegant and entertains beautifully. She and her friends have incredible collections of porcelain and silver from a range of makers and countries. Does that sentiment show up in the Fiorito ceramics? Yes, it’s a pattern I saw at auction based on an 18th-century

Italian design. We found the original manufacturers and asked them to remake the pattern for us in pieces our clients would use today. Each piece is handpainted in Emilia-Romagna. Tell us about the Murano glassware. I’ve spent a lot of time in Venice collecting vintage Murano glass. The wine glasses with the swirled stem are based on an antique set I own from the turn of the century. The original glasses are smaller, almost the size of cordial glasses; we’ve updated them to modern scale. How do you envision the collection being used? Everybody has the gilt china and fabulous wine glasses they got as wedding gifts. But how often do they ever use them? This is much more casual— the way I like to entertain. It’s perfect for a lunch or casual dinner. I don’t use finger bowls or have butlers behind every chair, so why would I want an ornate and formal table setting? Let’s say you’ve arranged your table in the country with Moda Domus settings. What are your guests wearing? Hmmm. I could see them wearing a great knit sweater, a perfectly tailored trouser and a small heel. Casual but sophisticated.

Alessandra Branca walks us through her Chicago atelier, where one room is covered in her new Audrey wallpaper in Cerise & Loden and the sofa is upholstered in Garda Mohair in Mushroom. “I happen to love pattern play,” remarks the designer.

LUXESOURCE.COM

Get Alessandra Branca talking about color and the pace becomes waltz-like, her voice honeyed. As she walks me through the luscious palettes of Into the Woods, the second collection from her eponymous home brand, Casa Branca, I decide to abandon my interview prompts and just enjoy. We begin in a sea of mossy green swatches, a colorway she describes as “a play on the classics but updated with pops of acid.” Next, we’re onto pairings of powder blue and chocolate brown. “I love ying-yang, male-female coloring,” she exclaims. “We never see enough of this combination, and it’s so chic and wonderful!” And finally, we move into reds, a signature hue of the designer’s. “It’s fun; it’s pop; it’s cool,” she muses, adding, “Red keeps you coming back.” As with Branca’s first collection, the designs—which span fabric, wallpaper and a growing breadth of home furnishings and accessories—are meant to be mixed and matched, interwoven with future collections and shopped by color story. They’re also deeply influenced by travel. This round, the designer drew inspiration from a fantasy brief particularly well-suited to the times.

“I love Italy’s Sudtirol, and I’ve been wanting to do an old Tyrolean-style, A-frame mountain house in a fresh way,” she says. “The question of ‘What can I do to update that lifestyle?’ is really what this collection is about.” Such pointed wanderlust resulted in patterns like Verdure Camo, a riff on the popular 17th-century hunting tapestries that Branca reimagined and spunked up by fusing traditional motifs with camouflage, and Audrey, a 19th-century archive print reimagined with bulbous blooms of exaggerated scale and named after Little Shop of Horrors’ leading character. Rounding out the collection, a medley of Branca takes on faux bois, tartan, stripes and peacock marble, as well as solids in teddy-like mohair, creamy cotton velvet and stalwart linen, create a cocooning ethos that does seem to tap into some primordial, back-to-thewoods version of luxury.

LUXESOURCE.COM

Casa Branca’s Into the Woods debut includes (left, from top) Audrey in Bolzano, Umbra in Bolzano and Giordano Camo performance fabric in Bolzano. The collection’s earthy palette, shown on the mood board above, was inspired by the northern Italian city of Bolzano.

Fortunately, the still repose of the past year didn’t hinder the designer—who describes a perfect Saturday as one spent amidst a stack of books—from developing the second installment of Casa Branca (available now) in the throes of the pandemic, not to mention, successfully launching the brand

last June. “I didn’t have to go far,” she says. “I literally walked around my life. That’s where this all came from.” Inspiration begetting inspiration, I begin researching the Italian part of Tyrol I knew little about before meeting Branca—and aching to redecorate.

Reflecting on my personal aesthetic begins with memories of my mom’s colorful outfits and red lipstick. I grew up in a world of color and pattern—French, African and Far East Asian influences. At home, there were art and sculptures, such as the pair of elegant felines that live in my living room today. There were textiles, like the chinoiserie print with golden threads on the formal living room sofa. I remember the effortless mix—not expensive or formal, but unique and just right. Growing up in New Orleans, you learn being different can be a badge of honor. I am unabashedly a girly-girl. My mom used to dress me in ruffles, pinafores, lace socks and shiny patent leather shoes. With my Coke-bottle glasses, you can imagine it was quite a sight. After my time in college known as the “sweatpants era” and a start in finance I classify as the “how boring can this suit be” period, I began a return to my true innate spirit. Fashion and decor were the ways to express my creativity within the confines of my gray pinstripesuit world. Perhaps the white Phillip Lim dress with the 3D flowers, high-heel patent leather Mary Janes and black tights weren’t exactly office attire, but I didn’t let that stop me from strutting down the halls and turning a few heads. My passion for the decorative arts and design shone through my home decor during that formative time. I had eight apartments in 15 years just to redecorate. Crazy, but so much fun! I played—a Hershey’s chocolate dining room in my Midtown place, peacock blue-painted walls and ceiling in the Uptown bedroom, and even the perfect white in my highrise bachelorette pad. I spent years experimenting on myself—a big reason why I am unafraid to be bold in my work today.

Billy Ceglia in the sitting room of his client’s home in Armonk, New York.

Billy Ceglia True inherent style is an unerring and unapologetic point of view that can be translated into every aspect of an individual’s life. It informs everything the possessor does and has—from the way they answer the phone, welcome you into their home, dress, and of course, decorate their living spaces. In my own homes, I try to create a sense of ease and comfort to welcome guests—adopting small details like leaving the door unlocked and arranging empty hangers in the coat closet for their garments. I have a “help yourself ” attitude when it comes to refreshments or anything in my home. If you need it, it’s yours for the taking. Since I adhere to such a tight design lexicon of simple materials and shapes, and a relatively limited color palette, it has jokingly been said that my favorite color is “plain”—and I happily own that. While I appreciate the ornate and complex, my personal preference always circles back to a level of simplicity with a touch of the unexpected or tongue-in-cheek. It could be a few books with funny titles, such as Avery Monsen’s All My Friends Are Dead (a particular favorite), or a subtly subversive piece of art in an otherwise sober room. These same details are also a part of my wardrobe. What appears to be a classic menswear pattern could be made up of thousands of cartoon mice, or the lining of a jacket could be painted with illustrations from Albert Lamorisse’s The Red Balloon, with a secret message under the collar to “follow me.” Similar to my streamlined fashion choices, my interiors are filled with simple and practical fabrics, tailored furniture and timeless details that reflect an enduring point of view. This leaves room for my personality, which is neither “plain” nor uncomplicated!

LUXESOURCE.COM

It never occurred to me that my box of a city condo would become a homey shrine to my collection of eccentric things. A decade ago, I was in my early 20s, flailing in the aftermath of the recession and searching for a place to buy when my mom sold my childhood home. The panging feeling of my foundation being uprooted while simultaneously my family having no home of our own stuck with me. I think it’s why, despite my dreams of moving into an iconic San Francisco Victorian, I remain in my developer-built flat. As a result, a big part of how my style manifests is working within limitations. I like testing and pushing boundaries to see how many colors and patterns a room can handle before it feels uncomfortable. When I allowed myself to use my home as a canvas for experimentation, a new part of my creative brain unlocked. I found a 19th-century French sideboard to use as a bar and installed modern built-ins around it marrying my home’s modern lines with my love of antiquity. With decorative artist Caroline Lizarraga, I created a “conspicuous camouflage” mural on the walls with gilded brush lines. Then I had the idea for cartoonish tapestry-inspired blobby drapes and collaborated with artist Isa Beniston to bring funny dragons and lions to life in my windows. A defining moment early in my career was when I read that one of the ottoman seats in a room designed by Ken Fulk on a magazine cover was sourced from Costco. I thought, “His projects have budgets I can barely imagine, but he chose to leave that piece in!” It reaffirmed my principles: Keep what you love, work with things that don’t need replacement, put nothing on a pedestal and check your humility.

Jenny Brown in the dining room of her client’s home in Lincoln Park, Chicago.

Jenny Brown

I’ll never forget the excitement when a bag of hand-me-downs from Wendy, a family friend, would appear on our kitchen table. On one occasion, the bag contained a powder pink tracksuit, the kind popular in the ’80s, and a far departure from the smocked Laura Ashley or appliqued Florence Eiseman dresses I normally donned for a special event. Ready for my best friend’s birthday party, I descended our staircase channeling my inner Wendy in the ensemble—my mousy brown hair newly coiffed with bangs and big glasses. Cloaked in the confidence of looking and feeling great, in my mind, I had arrived. Growing up in Lake Forest, Illinois, where architect David Adler was the patron saint and understated elegance reigned supreme, I was raised to appreciate the relaxed formality of my parents, my grandmother and their friends. While their homes were beautifully decorated, if you looked hard enough you would find an element of humor and whimsy. From miniature model rooms tucked within a library bookshelf and ladybug wallpaper adorning a formal powder room to miles of chintz covering windows and chairs, these houses reflected the confident ease of lives well lived and taught me to appreciate patina over polish. Real style does not seek the approval of others. It is the creative expression of those who possess it and have the confidence and joie de vivre to pull it off. Looking at photos from that birthday party where I’m wearing the powder pink tracksuit, I confess, I now prefer the pretty dresses my friends wore, though I am grateful for the encouragement from my parents to explore my own tastes. It is more than OK to stand out in a crowd.

“W

hen you acquire a valuable art piece, would you use anybody to

transport it? You suddenly consider how essential handling and transport become to ensure its security. The quality of service should become an important factor in whom you hire.” It is with this statement that general manager Victoria Battles describes Rest Assured, the leading white-glove logistics firm for interior designers, private households, and luxury companies in the Phoenix area. “Rest Assured receives, stores, ships and installs all high-end luxury goods, including designer furniture, fine art, and unique items,” she says. “Our clients see us as their single point of contact to inspect, catalog, and condition each item, ensuring we meet their high expectations. We are a crucial element in attaining the results our clients envision.” Rest Assured maintains a high level of quality service in which trust lies at the core. “The trust we have built comes from a long history of consistent quality results,” Battles says. It is due to this consistency that, in 2016, AirSea Packing, the leading white-glove logistics provider, affiliated itself with Rest Assured, expanding its network to 10 cities: Dallas, Atlanta, Miami, D.C., Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, London, Paris, and beyond.

Gestural Meaning Carmen Neely’s artwork is not just a purely aesthetic object. Personal experiences, including being female, Black and American, all inform her work. Behind every brushstroke and color choice is intention and intuition, which stem directly from those experiences. Emotions of heartbreak (the impetus for the work shown above), disappointment, optimism, anger and joy are all equally important tools she employs in her work, as are the oil paints and physical ephemera that adorn her canvases.

While learned visual rhetoric often associates light and dark with good and evil, Haynes sees the disparity in the shades on the canvas as more harmonious than divisive. Verdant Variety WITH GROWTH AND HARMONY TOP OF MIND, RICH MOSSY HUES BREATHE NEW LIFE INTO KITCHEN AND BATH SPACES. W R I T T E N A N D P R O D U C E D BY K AT H R Y N G I V E N

Color packs a punch—especially in kitchens and baths, where a little fresh thinking goes a long way. Today’s au courant designs lean toward one lush hue: green. While associated with nature, the tone also evokes feelings of abundance, serenity, peace and security—all elements we could use right now (and always) in our homes. For designer Raili Clasen, a saturated forest-like shade served as a reference to the past when updating this kitchen in a historic California residence. “It’s an old-world color that seemed right at home in a new build,” says Clasen.

Raili Clasen chose Benjamin Moore’s Hunter Green for the cabinetry in this Coronado, California, kitchen she designed with architect Eric Olsen. Buster + Punch hardware and a Regulator faucet by Waterworks provide pretty brass accents while Community Manufacturing stools offer plush and stylish seating.

PAST & PRESENT RAILI CLASEN

Coronado, the beautiful stretch of land off San Diego, has a storied history as both a resort town to the stars as well as an aviation and naval hub since the early 20 th century. So, when Raili Clasen’s clients asked her to renovate a dilapidated 1927 Dutch Farmhouse on the island that had once belonged to a Navy sea captain, she knew she wanted the design to nod to the home’s traditional roots. railicadesign.com How did you decide on that shade of green for the kitchen cabinetry? As with any vintage home renovation, I feel I have a responsibility to not turn the house into something it isn’t. For me, that means updating the space without it being modern. In terms of paint, I also wanted something somewhat unexpected and this green looked as though it could have been original to the residence—an ‘old’ color that worked wonderfully in the kitchen. Talk to us about the other materials you incorporated. We brought in reclaimed wood for the ceiling, which added a richness to the room while the waterfall marble island provided a light and bright element. Brass accents including the hardware, faucet and backsplash are really a reference to nautical tools and instruments, but they look so lovely with the green cabinetry.

In the dining area, Oscar pendants by Roman and Williams suspend above a Nickey Kehoe table surrounded by both Sawkille Co. and Nickey Kehoe seating.

Where is this dining space located? The kitchen, dining room and living room are actually part of one large area. I still love the open floor plan! Whenever I can, I try to bring nature inside, and the large planters under the windows have brass details that tie everything together. Things need friends, so the greenery here also references the paint used in the kitchen.

PRO TAKE MICK DE GIULIO

Mick De Giulio worked with Michael Abraham Architecture and designer Michael del Piero to create this sleek kitchen in Roselle, Illinois. The Juxtapose Semi-Professional Faucet in Matte Black by Mick De Giulio for Kallista features a pull-down spray head and Boost technology that increases water flow (shown here with Soap Dispenser).

LUXESOURCE.COM

For an elegant yet hardworking kitchen, look no further than Mick De Giulio, who has crafted award-winning spaces for more than 45 years and can teach us a thing or two about form and function. For his latest collaboration with Kallista, the designer kept technology and aesthetics top of mind when creating the Juxtapose collection, which includes a professional kitchen faucet with advanced cleaning features like Sweep spray and Boost. De Giulio focused on streamlined proportions and elegant aesthetics that fold a faucet into a room rather than make it a focal point. Take this Roselle, Illinois, project—a master class in mixed materials and refined touches. Various applications of stainless steel on the hood, countertops and hardware add a richness and reflection, while the iceberg quartzite backsplash keeps the mood light and airy. degiuliodesign.com; kallista.com

NATURAL INSTINCT CAITLIN MURRAY

“The most important principle in design for me is creating a space that you feel good living in every day,” says Caitlin Murray of Black Lacquer Design. But sometimes that idea can be interpreted in very different ways. Take, for example, this Redondo Beach, California, home, where Murray’s husband-and-wife clients had varying desires: One favored Hollywood Regency style and pattern while the other preferred a clean, tonal aesthetic. Eventually they landed on a fun, playful vibe in the powder room space, which Murray transformed into a jewel box of color and charm. No doubt, a win-win! blacklacquerdesign.com Where did you start? Everything was designed around the wallpaper. The clients travel to China and have a business there, so it was important to include something that referenced this connection. The Timorous Beasties wallcovering has such pretty patterning and motifs, which felt like the right fit to the homeowners. I’m always pushing for color, so I was thrilled it worked out!

The blue-and-green palette with pops of red works so well here. I think of greens and blues as reading neutral, so I’m usually able to convince clients to go for these colors. Besides, who doesn’t want to be surrounded by tones found in nature?

LUXESOURCE.COM

photo: jessica alexander.

Speaking of color, how do approach it within your designs? I like to mentally establish a palette in my head, because I think that if you don’t stay within certain constraints, the scheme can feel all over the place and disconnected. Here, I used the wallpaper as a road map for the other elements in the bathroom, including the Vola red faucet.

“We wanted to create something that would differentiate itself from the sea of gray vanities out there,” explains head designer Mario Muto of his company, Bemma, which he cofounded with Wetstyle owner Mark Wolinsky. Bemma offers an assortment of bathroom vanities and accessories in several colors and styles that goes beyond the expected, such as the handsome Terra collection (shown). It features a fluted walnut façade, marble or granite countertop, and satin brass base (also available in brushed nickel or matte black). Distinct, indeed. bemmadesign.com

It’s all in the details, and hardware is no exception! Enter Sun Valley Bronze and its eclectic new Assemblage Collection that exemplifies the brand’s impressive casting work. While each piece is asymmetrical in design, a sense of uniformity is achieved through scale and proportion across the collection, which includes cabinet knobs, pulls, grips and door hardware. Shown is the Assemblage Lever in Burnished Silicon Bronze. sunvalleybronze.com

Liebherr’s Monolith Collection, a high-tech line of cooling products for wine enthusiasts, now includes a Wine Column to round out its impressive offerings. The 24-inch appliance, shown at left, can hold up to 100 bottles and features adjustable wood slats and three temperature zones allowing users to optimally preserve their collections. The Monolith Wine Column is customizable to any kitchen and is also available in an 18-inch version. liebherr.com

Boutique property development firm Banda offers search, development and interior design under one roof. At Leinster Square, a newly renovated London townhouse, the firm’s elegantly laid-back ethos is on proud display in the dining and reception rooms, where matte-finish paneled walls set the stage for abstract artworks, sensuous sculptures and marble statement pieces.

MAN ABOUT TOWN

There’s something universally captivating about a derelict building with a story to tell. Such was the line of thought that sparked a then-23-year-old Edo Mapelli Mozzi to found Banda, his boutique, London development firm specializing in converting unconventional character properties into bespoke residences. Fifteen years later, with projects sprinkled across the globe and a growing interior design wing (not to mention, a recent marriage to England’s Princess Beatrice of York), Mapelli Mozzi expounds on his distinct vision of residential luxury. bandaproperty.co.uk

In a name: Banda translates to “house” in Swahili. I’ve spent a lot of time in Lamu, Kenya, and source huge amounts of inspiration from the people and way of life there. I wrote my business plan from a “banda” in my early 20s. For me, the word conjures a feeling of simplicity. Design doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does have to stir emotions and promote well-being. Holistic approach: When I launched Banda, there was a gap in the market for a high-quality search, development and design business. Many developers take a cookie-cutter approach that isn’t true to life. Our aim was to offer something out of the ordinary with quality and experience at the core. Buyers want: There is a definite shift away from prime postcodes and pure new-build schemes. Our clients want personality through design, community and security. These elements work together to form a unique feeling of luxury. Market update: Buyers are extremely serious right now; there’s no window shopping. Likewise, sellers are motivated. Covid has put a lot into perspective and encouraged many to make lifestyle changes. One thing for certain is that properties with open outdoor spaces will be the ones that shine as we navigate this unprecedented time.

Formative influence: My mother worked in commercial real estate and used to drive me around to her job sites. I understood from an early age that how we live and work are intertwined, and how spaces can make us feel.

URBAN AFFAIR

With lifestyle flexibility top of mind, many are seeing the appeal of the pied-à-terre anew. Take the owners of this Manhattan apartment: a Connecticut couple with a passion for the arts. After finding the perfect part-time roost in a historic West Village carriage house studio, they tasked Brooklyn architect Sarah Jacoby with infusing function and romance. An immersive coat of Farrow & Ball’s Off-Black and a wall of custom built-ins (including a sleek compact kitchen) make the space “a fun and special retreat, not just a crash pad,” says Jacoby. “They met in and love New York. This is their ‘reverse country home.’ ” sarahjacobyarchitect.com

Old Digs: NYC apartment. New Digs: Colonial in the burbs. In her own words: We always knew we’d end up leaving the city, and when we stayed with my husband’s parents during the pandemic, we realized we genuinely liked the suburbs! When our lease came up, we pulled the trigger. Besides many coats of fresh paint, so far we’ve wallpapered and updated the kitchen. Eventually, we’d love to gut the bathrooms, but…one day at a time.

Old Digs: 1930s bungalow. New digs: Larger 1930s bungalow. In his own words: I recently got married, and my home was a bit small for two. L.A.’s market, amazingly, was thriving during Covid, so we struck while the iron was hot. I love a California Spanish Revival and our new home has it all: a curved staircase, grand rooms and great natural light. It’s so different (and exciting!) to design with a partner. It will be custom, curated and fabulous.

Old Digs: Downtown apartment. New digs: 700-square-foot cottage. In her own words: We always wanted to explore small-footprint living. Plus, we were tired of renting! Renovating during a pandemic (we’ve redone the layout and landscaping) has been interesting, but given our desire for a simpler life, it only strengthened our confidence in creating intimate moments and outdoor living spaces that allow us to thrive as a family.

HAPPY HOUR

Quarantined in their home last spring, Chad Dorsey’s clients had a revelation. The crafts room of their Dallas home was languishing unused: Could Dorsey turn it into a getaway for the grown-ups? “The entire space was inspired by the idea of cocktails and wine,” the designer explains. Envisioning a bar with all the glamour of a swank night out on the town, he devised a moody, burgundy scheme, selecting Farrow & Ball’s Brinjal to lacquer the millwork. Adding further sparkle, Dorsey designed a hammered brass and Calacatta viola marble bar illuminated by a crystal chandelier from a Parisian hotel. The result? An invigorating idyll when cabin fever sets in—one bound to delight guests when safe, as well as future buyers seeking the ultimate at-home escape. chaddorseydesign.com

All our current condo projects have outdoor rooftops.

Think—circadian lighting, air and water filtration systems, even mirrors that give off energy through the light they produce. Top of mind: Private elevators, open-air staircases and indoor/outdoor fitness amenities that allow for social distancing.

Architect Max Strang amongst the citrus trees on his family property (left). A circa 1930s aerial photo of Gapway Grove with Lake Medora in the foreground (below). Adams Estate, Strang’s grandparents’ 1942 Georgian Revival home turned events venue (bottom).

ORIGIN STORY

In 1935, Charles and Emmie Adams left Detroit for the sleepy railroad town of Lake Alfred, Florida. There, they began building the largest citrus packing house of the time. Fast forward three generations and their grandson—Miami architect Max Strang—saw a unique opportunity for the family property: a wellness community. “It’s definitely a reaction to nearby development,” says Strang, who alongside his siblings, intends to transform the 500 plus-acre parcel into a high-design agrihood. “Groves were dying to citrus blight and being sold off to lackluster sprawl. We felt like we had a critical mass to do something special with, otherwise grandma would come back to haunt us.” Starting with converting their grandparents’ house into an events venue, plans were drawn for five distinct districts arranged around organic citrus groves and freshwater lakes. Units will range from apartments to estates, with styles from “modern agricultural” to “southern farmhouse.” There will be shopping, fine dining, a boutique inn and spa, a museum devoted to Florida citrus, a school, lakefront parks and community farms. Consistent with Strang’s portfolio, sustainability is paramount: Homes will offer solar-paneled roofs and geothermal heating, and rainwater will be harvested. The underlying mission? Build community around a back-to-the-land mindset—something Strang sees a growing market for. “Nowadays we’re divorced from our food and for many, it’s work to physically reach nature. This idea of walking out the door and onto a nature path is creating a new kind of suburbia.” strang.design

t started on a napkin … where all great ideas germinate. “It began with a sketch and grew from there,” says architect Mark Candelaria, referring to the founding of his firm, Candelaria Design Associates. “Shortly after, I designed my first home in Silverleaf, and thus began the growth and branding of Candelaria Design.” In August 1999, he brought Vivian Ayala on board, who has since become a principal and director of architecture. In 2005, principal and CFO Evelyn Jung joined the firm, followed by principal and director of architecture Meredith Thomson—both becoming partners in 2018. Together, this multiaward-winning team has received many accolades, including Masters of the Southwest and the No. 1 Residential Architecture Firm for six years in a row. “The best milestone, though, has been our effortless client referrals,” Candelaria says. With “lifestyle” as its focus, in addition to its renowned homes, the firm offers tours throughout Europe and has recently launched weekend getaway tours nationally. From sprawling estates

very challenge has a silver lining, even in the world of design. In 2003, architect C.P. Drewett composed a renovation for a Paradise Valley home decimated by fire. During construction, the home was selected as a showcase home and thus, toured by thousands of people. “Untold opportunities resulted from this exposure,” says the founder of architectural firm, Drewett Works. Many years of creating one-of-a-kind luxury homes and communities followed, including the great honor, he says, of designing the Estate Homes for The Ritz-Carlton Residences in Paradise Valley. Today, his firm is working on real estate opportunities in Arizona, Colorado and Mexico, and the master plan for a marina on the northern Baja peninsula. Working in such high-end areas, one might be surprised to learn that more high-density, low-income areas inform much of Drewett’s purpose and process. “Poverty in design often yields the essence of a solution,” he says. “Architecture is not only about creating shelter, it’s about placemaking and the memories; the pleasure of being there.”

s a child, architect Milos Minic was fascinated by making things—spending hours with LEGO® sets, creating unique structures and cities. Furthering this artistic inclination, Minic’s father would often gift his son leftover scraps and materials to piece together using his imagination. Such impactful childhood experiences inspired Minic to pursue architecture, graduating from Syracuse University, during which he studied Italian Renaissance architecture in Florence and other regions in Europe as part of his curriculum. This invaluable experience profoundly impacted Minic and his understanding of the makings of place.

“My eyes were opened to how design impacts life,” he says. Putting ideas into practice, Minic founded Integrated Design in 2013. “Integrated” suits the company well, descriptive not only of its inclusive services, but also its collaborative point of view. “Great design will always benefit from the input of others and a holistic approach to the process,” he says. Integrated Design not only brings a sketch or concept to life, but also brings architecture to its clients’ daily rituals of life. “Utilizing the latest technology in visualization and digital software, our clients can actively engage in our process from onset to completion,” he says. “It’s a wholly immersive experience.”

“The designer’s job is to lead the way to a brighter future— to visually communicate that tomorrow can be better than yesterday.”

n the backyard of an acquaintance, under the blazing hot Phoenix sun, Paul Jeffrey started his long, and seemingly destined, journey toward developing his craft of designing and making bespoke artistic furniture. It was then, he met Rene, a Mexican immigrant, who would become his business partner, together opening Paul Rene | Custom Modern Furniture and Cabinetry. “As we were learning how to cut, nail, screw, hammer and scratch the surface of wood with coarse sandpaper, I, too, was experiencing the same transformative process,” says Jeffrey, whose career began more than 20 years ago as a concept car designer for Ford Motor

Company. Stifled by the corporate environment, Jeffrey walked away, looking for a warmer climate and more creative freedom. Over the next two decades, he faced several personal and professional setbacks, when he finally decided to take a leap. “In 2003, I moved to Phoenix, and thought to use my design talents during the housing boom. I had to quickly develop a fresh aesthetic and learn how to make furniture on a custom basis, but I didn’t know the design language that signaled quality and luxury,” he says. So, Jeffrey dug in … deep. And the result was handcrafted beautiful, modern furniture and cabinetry, for which he and his studio continue to be highly regarded today.

tarting out as a two-person team in 1985, builders Kim and Rod Cullum have always had an eye for customization— and innovation. “We completed our first million-dollar custom home in the late ’80s,” Rod says. “The ability to meet our client’s needs using the finest materials and methods available, and produce a beautiful one-of-a-kind home solidified our future direction.” At that time, Rod managed construction activities, while Kim worked out of the couple’s dining room, overseeing office operations. Since then, they have grown their firm, Cullum Homes, into a much larger operation, though it remains a family business—the couple’s daughter, Lindsay Cullum-Colwell is managing principal and head architect, and son-in-law, Paul Colwell, is managing director. At the heart of the business is the ability to adapt and prioritize client needs. When the luxury market shifted in 2008, Cullum Homes recognized an opportunity to create residential communities with smaller footprints and lower maintenance. “It was a risk that paid off,” Kim adds. ooking at Holly Wright’s innovative designs, one might easily deem her a “trendsetter.” Ironically, the award-winning designer and principal of Holly Wright Design adamantly steers clear of anything trendy when it comes to her work. Rather, she promotes individuality and avoids anything that would “constrict the evolutionary process of custom design,” as she puts it. A native Arizonan, Wright was always creative as a child, constantly rearranging her room and driving her parents crazy, as she tells it, with frequent requests to update bedding, draperies and more. “When it came time for college,

What’s on your desk? Stacks of design magazines, a board of inspirational images, a note from my husband, and always a cup of coffee.

I chose to go into business management, but found myself in desperate need of a creative outlet,” she says. “So, I took my first interior design course as an elective, fell in love with it, switched my major and never looked back.” While Wright may have her design pet peeves, she also possesses a strong set of design rules that guide her work and approach to it: the rule of three, keep to three materials/ finishes or less in a space to keep it timeless; functionality is always first; make no space too perfect; and always add the unexpected element. All of which can be seen in her timeless, yet sophisticated residential and commercial interiors.

IMI DESIGN STUDIO

“Good design elevates the human spirit. The thoughtful spaces we create improve the day-to-day experiences of those we serve.”

nita Lang likens her design approach to that of solving a Rubik’s Cube. “Thinking spatially, in three dimensions, my mind takes spaces and works the design puzzle, until everything is in its place,” she says. The founder and principal of award-winning IMI Design Studio, Lang works by three design rules: Be thoughtful with design, keeping its integrity and consideration of those who inhabit it; be innovative by tapping into your own creative depth; and understand design principles so you can bend the rules. With these in mind, Lang and her team draw from one point of reference, upon

which all design decisions are made: authenticity. “The design continuity is carried through to the curation of the furniture, art, and accessories to ensure each detail honestly resonates with the whole,” she says. While Lang finds inspiration globally, from the likes of Baxter Italy, Michael Anastassiades and Patricia Urquiola, locally, she embraces the Arizona vernacular for its appropriateness and sustainability. Currently, she is working on a special project for a 53-acre bed-andbreakfast retreat. “It includes small homes, sustainability, a swimming hole, a labyrinth and a double-decker treehouse for starters,” she says. “It’s a new magic kingdom.”

OWNBY DESIGN

D

“For decades, Ownby Design has been synonymous with comfortable and livable, modern interiors.”

esigner Claire Ownby attributes two things to her company’s success: a little good fortune and a lot of fortitude. Ownby opened her namesake interior design firm, Ownby Design, in 1999, with her design degree in hand and a booming economy behind her. This, combined with many dedicated hours, allowed her to not only survive, but to grow during the 2008 downturn and beyond. “We parlayed this dedication into development over the past decade, which has led us to being one of the premier design firms in the valley,” she says. While some designers prefer free rein in the process, Ownby graciously invites clients in, capturing their visions early on by way of imagery boards to ensure everyone is on the same page. “If this step is done thoroughly, we can allow our creative process to open up new and interesting avenues throughout the project,” she says. In addition to the clients’ desires, Ownby looks to inspirations from travel and nature to further inform her approach—whether

the textures and colors of a garden, or scenery from a local trip to Lake Powell or exotic destination, like Asia. Ownby Design will continue to deliver one-ofa-kind, high-end homes across the Southwest, but is branching out with an exclusive line of home elements created for the release of Ownby Home in 2021.

What is the first project that put your company on the map? The year I opened Ownby Design, I was awarded a large project in Desert Mountain, which led to many referrals and allowed me to find my design wings. Can you elaborate a bit on the kinds of communities you work in? We have been incredibly fortunate to have been recently awarded several large communities to collaborate on: Cameldale Estates; Azure by Shea Homes; Cullum Homes’ The Village at Seven Desert Mountain; and The Ritz-Carlton Estate Homes. What type of project or location would you love to take on or work in? I have a personal love for Mexico and South America. The food, beaches and culture really speak to me. I would love to collaborate on a community in Costa Rica or Cancún.

LUXURY BUILTS “My dream creative project is the dream project of my clients.”

ooking at Rene Cervantes’ work, one might be surprised to learn that the Arizona builder comes from rather humble career beginnings. “I was looking for opportunities to grow 12 years ago, and I didn’t know how or where to get started,” he says. “Someone offered me a side job to build out their kitchen, so I jumped at the chance and got started. That led to another small job, and a bigger one thereafter, and so on.” One of Cervantes’ earliest clients was the esteemed furniture designer, Paul Jeffrey, from whom Cervantes learned important aspects of the “industry,” and the great potential behind the art of designing and manufacturing great products.

Is there anyone you aspire to be like, in work and/or life? There is a small list of those who I greatly respect for their work and their lives: Jim Rohn for his humility and simplicity when teaching people to grow. Tony Robbins for his balanced life between business and personal relationships. Billionaire Dan Peña for his strong character and taking action without hesitating. Steve Jobs for his great creativity and skill in growing a huge company from scratch.

“Paul and I have worked together on many projects over the years,” he says. “This relationship helped both of us grow our respective companies and reputation.” After gaining more clients, along with some more industry insight, Cervantes evolved his company, now named Luxury Builts, and honed in on the potential and beauty of the design-build process for kitchens and baths. The result has been nothing short of ongoing success. Today, Luxury Builts’ portfolio spans across the country, with variations in taste, quality and style. “We make sure to understand clients’ needs and preferences,” Cervantes says. “But, the bottom line is, it must look good.”

ariety is the spice at Greey|Pickett, where landscape styles and areas of focus differ on the daily. “One of our biggest strengths is that we are not known for any one specific look or characteristic,” says Russell Greey. “We are a truly diverse studio with the ability to create designs from modern and contemporary to traditional.” Living in the Southwest, the trend tends toward more clean, modern lines as the native desert palette lends itself beautifully to this aesthetic. As with Greey|Pickett’s varied styles, its work is rooted in many different areas of the Valley and beyond, including

Nevada, Idaho, California and Washington, to name a few. “We excel at working on diverse design aesthetics,” Wendell Pickett says. “Being involved in projects all over the U.S. really allows us to stretch our creativity and our plant palette.” The types of projects Greey|Pickett takes on continue to celebrate its vast range, from resorts to residential communities to golf courses and high-end estates. After 20 years in business, the firm continues to set trends. A point proven by its countless awards and accolades. For Greey and Pickett, though, the highest milestone of success is happy clients, so many … and counting.

LANDSCAPING

JEFF BERGHOFF, FOUNDER AND CEO berghoffdesign.com 480.481.3433 berghoffdesign

andscape architect Jeff Berghoff views each and every project as an opportunity … a chance to evolve the space into a dynamic, custom-tailored garden that flows continuously throughout the site. For the past 24-plus years, that’s precisely what he and his team at Berghoff Design Group have done, transforming residential properties into beautiful garden showpieces. To do so, the boutique landscape design and build firm takes a boutique approach, beginning every design drawing by hand and learning about the site, individually. “After listening to what the client is hoping for, we then educate them about

what is realistic, refining their goals and then making them a reality,” Berghoff says. While the company comprises 300 employees working alongside numerous architects and contractors, its focus remains more singular in mind: individual, single-family residences, from intimate gardens to large estates. “I find the most joy from working on sites that are pure and timeless,” Berghoff says. To bring out the best of a garden’s design, he and his team look to the home’s architecture, seamlessly integrating the two to make a lasting garden impression. “It’s not about a particular style, but rather working on that which endures.”

hen asked how to ensure a painless landscape installation, Peggy and Larry De La Garza’s advice is to look for a company with a history of good work and happy clientele. Enter Trademark Landscape, whose groundbreaking projects and repeat customers speak for themselves. Over the past 40 years, Peggy and Larry have kept their firm unique in every way, never compromising on the bespoke aspect of their approach. “We continually strive for perfection and the result has been a business that has grown in ways we never could have imagined,” they say. Working almost exclusively in the lushly landscaped, gated desert communities

of North Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and the Biltmore area, Trademark melds its designs seamlessly into the environments in which they inhabit. In addition to such creative compositions and unique plant selection, Trademark’s greenscapes are perhaps best known for that which cannot be seen: the grown-in feel of their flora and fauna. “Creating gardens that look established from the start is the result of using large specimen plants that provide a sense of maturity,” they say. With such a following, it’s no surprise the De La Garzas often enjoy free rein in the way of design, taking their client’s ideas and running with them … to create something beyond their wildest dreams.

ASK THE EXPERT What type of project or location would you love to take on? I would love to work at the base of Mummy Mountain with its unique rock formations and natural beauty. Name a couple milestones in your company’s success. Peggy: We went from a small landscaping company to being highly sought after for our one-of-a-kind designs. In 2015, I received the Masters of the Southwest award, and since then, our work has continued to garner publicity and adoration from near and far. What is the first project that put your company on the map? In 1978, we started installing landscapes in Carefree, Arizona, on top of Black Mountain. f Salcito Custom Homes had nothing else in its portfolio beyond the array of signature estates it has delivered at Silverleaf (perhaps the most prestigious residential community in Scottsdale), that alone would be enough to establish it as one of the most dynamic design-build firms in the Southwest. There, amid the splendor of McDowell Sonoran Preserve, are countless examples of the company’s commitment to detail-rich construction and craftsmanship—from an elegant, nearly 13,000-square-foot formal Mediterranean estate, to a modern masterpiece that spans two homesites. But the imprint that Salcito has made on Silverleaf only begins to tell the story of a family-owned business that, after five decades, continues to redefine custom home building in and around Scottsdale. “Our work is very diverse,” says company president Anthony Salcito. “The projects that we design and build are specific to meet our clients’ tastes. nyone who builds a home in the Arizona desert usually has one priority: maximizing views. But it’s rare that those views are mere feet away, due to the fact that the home is literally built into the side of a mountain. “When you’re standing in the kitchen sink, you’re looking straight up the mountain,” says designer Laura Kehoe of the modernist Paradise Valley residence. “We’ve never worked on a project that was so close in proximity to these big boulders.” It’s an unusual feat, to say the least. Builder Scott Pfeiffer, who brought Kehoe and architect C.P. Drewett onto the project, knew construction would be difficult due to the extremely steep site, but he also predicted the final result would be worth it. “The lot itself is extremely challenging,” notes Pfeiffer, “But the client wanted breathtaking views, and this lot has better views than anything we’ve ever built.” The owners knew they wanted the house to skew modern, but exactly what that meant was up for debate. “They didn’t know what level of modernism they wanted,” says Drewett. “We were slow to explore how avant-garde we could take it.” As it turned out, they were able to take it pretty far. The design incorporated a butterfly roof that opens up both sides. “Because it’s kind of a reverse slope roof, it creates the illusion of exceptionally high ceilings,” Pfeiffer says. “But what it really does is open the house up to the front and the back, so that you can maximize the views.” In collaboration with landscape designer Jeff Reuter, Pfeiffer conceived the front landscape, lining the driveway with Texas ebony trees to dramatize the arrival to the house. The drama continues inside, as guests ascend from the lower level to the upper. Limestone masses meld into glass to frame a suspended, sky-lit stairwell that runs through the center of the structure like a spinal column. “There is no classic front door or foyer, so leading people to the next destination really is the process,” Drewett says. “We made the stair tower a strong feature that you immediately see on arrival so that everything would unfold with great clarity.”

In a nod to the modern architecture, the owners made it clear the interiors should feel clean, with no clutter and very little visible hardware. “They were looking for something bright and airy,” Kehoe says, adding that the ample use of hard surfaces such as glass, metal and limestone had the potential to create a stark feeling. “We worked to soften some of those elements with movement in the stone and by bringing in the wood tones.” Drewett, who notes that modern architecture is sometimes too masculine and unapproachable, also used wood strategically. “I use wood to calm the architecture down and make it more elegant,” he says. “Adding a level of organic nature is very appealing to humans, because it imparts warmth and livability.” To further counter the linear angles, Kehoe played with organic, curved forms in many of the furnishings and sculptures, as well as gentle, luxurious textures for the finishes. “We gravitated toward really rich, very soft fabrics,” Kehoe says. “We wanted it to feel sophisticated while also ensuring that it remained comfortable—and keeping those views top of mind.” Though color appears sporadically, selected artworks imbue the walls with cheerful moments to counter the neutral fabrics and finishes. A Hilario Gutierrez painting in shades of blue balances the desert tones in the living room, while a bright Stephanie Shank abstract in the dining room draws one in. “We were completely happy to give a little life, a little personality, to the spaces,” Kehoe says. This wasn’t the only way the team infused personality into the home. They fielded a somewhat unusual request from the clients: a specialty room for their exotic birds, located off the main bedroom. “That’s another thing we took into consideration,” Kehoe says, “keeping everything pretty minimal and clean because the birds are free to roam inside. In the end, that minimalism speaks louder than even the exotic birds. “The house has a really strong tectonic nature,” observes Drewett. “It’s very expressive structurally.” And the architecture, as Kehoe notes, is “the driving train behind it all.”

Designer Laura Kehoe opted for a muted neutral palette in the living room, designing custom sofas and armchairs with walnut bases and tapered legs and upholstered in Kravet fabric. On the wall, Blue Sky Rain by Hilario Gutierrez imparts a splash of calming color.

ome has never been just one place for Phoenix-based painter Papay Solomon. His mother was pregnant with him when the First Liberian Civil War drove his family to neighboring Guinea. Later, political unrest forced Solomon and his family into refugee camps. Before migrating to Arizona at age 14, he found home in the faces around him; in the camp elders and childhood friends he sketched. Now the artist explores this kinship writ large in photorealistic portraits capturing the African immigrant experience. Solomon’s sitters are young immigrants or children of immigrants from across Africa. “In a way, I’m telling my own story through their faces,” he says of the portraits, which mix European Renaissance painting techniques with richly patterned African textiles and modern fashion. Solomon established this focus as a student at Arizona State University, tasked to paint a self-portrait inspired by the old masters. Something clicked when he found Dutch painter Jan van Eyck’s Portrait of a Man in a Red Turban. Seeing clothing reminiscent of traditional African headdress in a European painting, where faces like his were portrayed as subservient, empowered him. “I thought, ‘This is African. It’s mine. I’ll take it back,’ ” he recalls. Painting himself crowned in his mother’s traditional fabrics “allowed me to bring my other identities with me.” He recreates this self-discovery for each sitter. They begin with long conversations, which he records to capture subtle gestures. He then photographs the subject styled with personal talismans, from a worn baseball cap to a swipe of their favorite lipstick, and fabrics that reflect their cultural backgrounds. “In the African tradition, textiles are never just decorative,” says Solomon. “They have a narrative.” Recently, he’s also begun doing a quick sketch before turning to the canvas on which he layers thin, imperceptible brushstrokes of oil paint to form the translucent skin. In contrast to such detail, some sections are left “non-finito” (underpainted), exposing the layers beneath “because I like to show my journey.” Capturing the beauty of Black skin feels “especially important at this time, when the Black body is viewed as a threat,” he explains. His subjects, swathed in textiles of their heritage, are “in a space where they can just be themselves.”

Artist Papay Solomon drew a color palette (below) for easy reference while painting. He’s recently begun sketching his subjects (bottom) prior to painting. The final paintings, such as The Black Boy Who Wears White Skin: Yaya Simeon Edamivoh - Nigeria (left) and The One Who Flies, Portrait of Grace Carol - Equatorial Guinea (opposite), are hyperrealistic portraits that explore the African diaspora.

R

emember when people hosted parties? Ian and Pedro Rollo certainly do. And there is one in particular that stands out among the rest. While hosting a gathering in their Scottsdale home, the Rollos received an unexpected offer from a couple who lived nearby: If they could buy the Rollos’ home, the Rollos could buy theirs. In essence, they wanted to do a house swap. An unusual suggestion, to be sure, but it came with a bit of serendipity. “We’d had our eye on their place for two years,” says Pedro. “It has a warmth and resort-like ambience—the private getaway feel we’d always wanted.” The couple jumped at the offer. Avid entertainers, the Rollos had always been intrigued by the home’s functionality: The living area, kitchen, entry and patio combined into one open layout ideal for mingling. The stone floors, brick walls, and black doors and windows created a vibe rooted in masculinity that appealed to them. But the couple also wanted to add drama and depth. So they turned to designer Jill Mitchell to do just that. Originally designed by local architect Tor Stuart, the sprawling residence is perched atop a mountain on 10 acres of unspoiled wilderness. Floor-to-ceiling windows and wall-to-wall retractable doors evoke a floating sensation. “It’s a modern beauty,” says Mitchell, who used the indoor/outdoor architecture as the jumpingoff point for Ian and Pedro’s request for a luxurious but livable design that functioned for both everyday life and entertaining. A minimalist approach became Mitchell’s guiding mantra. “No matter what, we had to preserve the view,” she says. “By going minimal, we could effectively furnish the space while directing the eye outdoors.” In the living area, this meant two oversize, clean-lined custom sofas for ample seating; one of them backless to maintain the sightline outdoors. Clear glass lamps offer ambient light and visual read-through to both the mountain views as well as the landscaping by Chad Norris. “The sun paints incredible colors across the sky at dusk,” says Ian. “Maintaining unobstructed views allows that sunset to be experienced anywhere.”

To add depth and drama, Mitchell painted the walls white to contrast the dark stone and brick. And, because minimalist should never translate to cold, she counteracted the 15-foot ceilings by adding pieces with visual heft, such as the extra-large coffee table that anchors the living area. “Oversize pieces keep the space from feeling cavernous,” she says. Mitchell then utilized metallic accents to emphasize the stone’s warm golden tones. Bold textiles and materials—velvets, shagreen, burnished brass—as well as abstract patterns surprise against the furnishing’s clean lines. “I love mixing the old and the new, combining textiles, adding metals,” says Mitchell. “Each layer ensures that a space looks curated over time.” It is a lesson in understated luxury, but Mitchell couldn’t forget the other half of the couple’s request: livability. Every piece Mitchell chose is anything but precious. “No one wants to live in a museum,” remarks Pedro. Performance fabrics on the seating defend against red wine spills and muddy paws from the Rollos’ four pooches—Walker, Winston, Watson and Sammy. Dark wool rugs add warmth to stone floors while combating heavy foot traffic. The main floor is not the only space that’s meant to be enjoyed to the fullest. A downstairs guest suite, complete with its own living room and kitchenette, is more than just a place for guests to retire to—it’s also an additional entertainment area that nods to Pedro’s affinity for modern Italian furniture. A peacock-blue sofa and chaise pair with a cognac leather ottoman to break the neutral color scheme. Nearby, a shuffleboard begs for competition. For all the carefully curated furnishings, perhaps the main bedroom is what hosts the pièce de résistance: a Poltrona Frau Volare canopy bed by Italian designer Roberto Lazzeroni. Pedro has pined for it since youth. “I’ve loved it forever, and I finally found its home,” says Pedro. “Being that it’s both framed and open, it reflects the bedroom’s indoor/outdoor vibe perfectly.” That bedroom, like every space on the main floor looks out on the covered patio—the couple’s favorite space. Here, sheltered in the privacy of the canyon walls, Pedro and Ian dine alfresco, relax on the swings and swim in the infinity pool. The house is exactly what they thought it could be. Says Ian, “It’s our own little resort.”

SPARKING JOY A Phoenix couple defines their next act with a minimalist lifestyle and a contemporary new build to match. W R I T T E N BY M I C H E L L E B R U N N E R | P H O T O G R A P H Y BY E R I C K R U K

t’s a familiar story: Empty nesters decide to downsize once the kids have grown up and flown the coop. Sometimes, however, that’s easier said than done: Sentimentality makes it difficult to release both a home and the objects within. But, even with many fond memories, this Phoenix couple was ready. “We wanted to let go of a lot of material things and simplify our lives,” says the husband. For them, paring back wasn’t just a KonMaristyle approach to streamlining their possessions; it also meant reducing their footprint and their floor plan. “They were really serious about shrinking their lifestyle,” says architect David Dick, who worked with builder Mike Murphy on the project. “A lot of people don’t walk the walk, they just talk the talk, but these clients were really committed. And when you have an owner who is changing and evolving, a house has to do the same.” The pair’s previous abode was a massive Mediterranean-style dwelling on a large property with a guest house. “We had all these rooms and we weren’t even living in them,” says the wife. After 18 years, they were ready for something more modest. “Previously, we’d done a lot of custom tiles and lighting; everything was imported from France,” says interior designer Laurel Pfannenstiel, who worked with the family on their previous residence. “This time they wanted to downplay that. They wanted clean and modern. They’re from the Midwest, so my goal was to create a home with a level of warmth that reflected their personalities.” The shift to a minimalist style was partially inspired by a trip the husband took with his adult son to Spain, where they visited Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion. “We both really connected to that space, where you feel like the indoor structure is part of the outdoors because of the views and the ability to open the glass,” he says. “The time we spent there confirmed that this style really felt right for this stage of our lives.” Nestled along a hillside in Paradise Valley, the new house champions function over frivolity. The owners were adamant about not wanting any rooms that they wouldn’t use on a daily basis. As a result, there isn’t a single inch of wasted space in the floor plan,

which was also designed to flow seamlessly to the exterior spaces. Floor-to-ceiling windows slide open to breathtaking views of Camelback Mountain and downtown Phoenix. For the interiors, Pfannenstiel paired pale wood millwork and doors with light concrete floors throughout to achieve a serene and cohesive feel. Dark charcoal oak was used in the pantry and office to provide a bit of contrast. Low-profile furnishings in creamy whites and light grays with pops of blue harmonize with the streamlined architecture and steer the focus to the dramatic vistas outside. “I wanted to keep the palette neutral so it wouldn’t take away from the views, but I did want the integrity of nature in these spaces,” she says. To that end, the interior designer incorporated white-oak cabinetry to bring an organic warmth to the contemporary kitchen and complement the warm desert tones outside. The space, which opens up to the back patio with outdoor bar seating, was originally slated to be the dining room, but the views were so spectacular that the couple decided to make it the kitchen. Because low-maintenance, easy-to-clean finishes were a priority, durable quartz was selected for the countertops and marble was relegated to the backsplash as an accent. “They had very specific goals of how they wanted to allocate their budget,” says Dick. “Their motto was simplify, simplify, simplify: Keep it elegant and keep the lines simple.” A similar less-is-more approach was also applied to the exterior spaces, which include a dining area, outdoor kitchen, fire pit and pool. To create a lush feeling around the home’s perimeter, landscape designer Jeremy McVicars employed native desert plantings that require minimal water and maintenance, such as Blue Palo Verde trees, Mexican feather grass, agave and aloe plants. “We focused on framing the sight lines with trees and shrubs while preserving the view corridor,” he says. Being able to take in that natural landscape without even having to step outside is what sold the couple on a more modern, predominantly glass design—plus it made saying goodbye to their former way of living a little bit easier. Says the wife, “This is a new, separate chapter in our lives, and we needed a new house to go with it. Now it’s time for us to make memories here.”

An abundance of glass connects the main entry and open-plan living space of this Paradise Valley home to its setting. Interior designer Laurel Pfannenstiel and architect David Dick incorporated doors and windows by Western Window Systems, supplied by Pinnacle Window & Door.

Natural Transition by artist Hilario Gutierrez provides a bold color moment in the living room, where a light blue-and-cream rug, sourced from Underfoot, anchors an oversized Poliform sofa, mohair-covered Anees swivel chair and Holly Hunt leather-andoak ottoman.
