There’s usually an initial “wow”

factor, but then over time, people notice a difference in how they feel. Wellness in our homes is the next wave of health.

What materials do you enjoy working with? I love really organic forms, shapes and textures, and I almost always marry those with something a little bit more high-style or glamorous.

The consciousness around how things are made is really expanding. We found a group in Mexico, for example, that is creating leather out of cactus.

A conversation with Ethan and Sarah Wessel is as synchronous and serene as the custom homes they design. The husband-and-wife team behind Tennen Studio shares a deeply rooted appreciation of Japanese culture, which informs much of the firm’s design aesthetic and is the inspiration behind a bespoke collection of incense holders. Tennen Studio has also developed an incense line that is produced in Japan but rooted in both the Sonoran Desert and the Japanese landscape. “There are a couple of scents that we reserve for home,” says Sarah. “I love burning florals in the bath and the bedroom. They smell fresh. In winter, I love the moss scent. Doyenne of Decor

My memories of growing up in Charlottesville, Virginia, were of constant company. I lived out in the country, and everyone—my great aunt, godmother, parents—went to each other’s houses.

Having a dinner party or a cocktail buffet was a regular occurrence. There were libraries stacked with books and dogs constantly running in and out. It instilled in me the belief that houses should be welcoming, but not so precious that someone might feel uncomfortable.

I’ve often said that starting a project is like embarking on a new romance—that feeling of seeing someone across the room at a dinner party and your heart races. I fantasize about the house, imagining what it’s going to look and feel like finished. Like all affairs, there are the highs and lows, the traumas and dramas. There are exhilarating moments when you go shopping and find the perfect piece. Then there are the times when you’re dealing with budget constraints or something goes wrong. When I finish a house, I get incredibly sad. It’s time to move on to the next affair, but it’s hard because that project lived in my head for so long.

Working for Sister Parish and Albert Hadley taught me so much. I was just 24 years old, when I was lucky enough to experience the taxi-cab yellow drawing room they did for William Paley’s apartment.

It had beautiful French furniture, a Coromandel screen and paintings by Van Gogh and Gauguin, yet the room was so comfortable. It was a perfect juxtaposition of grand and simple. I’ll never forget that space.

Interestingly enough, people tend to think that I mostly do chintz rooms, but I believe one of the most beautiful things is to have a very severe background with an incredible piece of 18th-century furniture and a modern painting. No matter the style, it’s got to be comfortable, and that’s especially important now. Eight people should be able to sit in a group and talk to each other with a place to rest their drink.

Coming out of this period, people will either want cozier houses filled with furniture and objects, or they’ll be compelled to edit and simplify. Everybody wants an easy answer, but there’s never been just one way in design.

This past year taught us that design isn’t just a pretty picture; it’s a vital component of our lives. We all like to believe that our homes matter. Certainly, I do—after all, I have a business based around that idea. But the importance of the spaces that we live in was magnified during the pandemic. When we look at gatherings that are more intimate, it makes experiences more valued and important.

Though I’ve been sheltering in Provincetown, Massachusetts, I generally think of San Francisco as my home. There’s a common thread that draws outsiders and nonconformists there, whether it’s artsy bohemians or the tech folks; it’s a community that relishes quirkiness and eccentricity. You get the feeling that even the blue bloods in San Francisco have some wonderful tawdry tale in their past! It’s the kind of place where a leather daddy, a drag queen, a tech gazillionaire and a doyenne with a neck full of diamonds can all sit at the same table. It’s part of what drew me there, and what adds a sense of otherness or fearlessness to our work.

When I was younger, I was desperate and excited to learn about design. Growing up in Virginia, I recall the impression family trips to Monticello or The Greenbrier had on me. As I got older, I became interested in designers who built totally immersive environments. The first time I went to Hotel Costes in Paris I was enthralled by Jacques Garcia’s ability to create transportive spaces.

Similarly, Tony Duquette and Renzo Mongiardino had this gift for crafting rooms in an incredibly theatrical way. For us, every project starts with a story. There’s literally a written script for every job we do. The story provides a guidepost so we don’t lose sight of what we’re trying to achieve.

Not every project comes with a rich narrative, but sometimes you get lucky, which happened with our revamp of the Cloud Club, (the legendary lunch spot in the Chrysler Building). It’s one of the most iconic buildings in the world. We want to honor the building’s past as well as the optimism of its era. That’s what’s so special about working on this building at this particular moment. I think we all want to feel optimistic about something right now.

Growing up in Palm Beach was a unique experience because it was all folly and fantasy. Every aspect of my childhood home was magical. I grew up in a turreted-shingled church in the middle of a garden filled with orange blossoms and bougainvillea. It’s a place where you can paint vines up over your walls and ceiling.

It’s personality-forward decorating. That love of theatrical design, the integration of indoor/outdoor spaces and a laid-back approach to entertaining carry through my designs, no matter where I’m working.

Though I hadn’t planned on becoming a designer, I didn’t know how to not make design a priority. Deep down I just really like to find things and shine a light on them in a way that shows their potential. To illustrate, I’m not a morning person—there’s very little you could do to get me to wake up before 8:30 a.m. But if a friend said, I’ll give you $300 to go to the flea market to buy things for my house, I would be up at 5 a.m. shivering in the rain with a sense of anticipation that rivals Christmas morning. I get this feeling when I walk into an antique store or turn down an aisle at a flea market. I think we’re all led to things by our joy and if we’re lucky that can be our career.

When I look back, the buildings could burn down and the houses could be sold, but what matters is the people I’ve come to love or be changed by. It’s funny—you think your career is about what you do, but it’s mostly about who you do it with. An unforeseen and often uncelebrated highlight is that I get to work with my mother (interior designer Mimi McMakin). She’s the designer I’ve learned the most from, and it’s not just what she’s taught me professionally per se, but also the constantly evolving, beautiful home she provided for us.

The past year has given us all a chance to reconsider our priorities and what makes our homes distinctly ours. The pandemic, the stopping of work, having been stuck in our houses—it’s made things that matter mean much more.

Personally, it has made me more focused on antiques, vintage items and things that have history. It’s beauty with deeper roots, meaning and authenticity.

“Consumers are becoming more discerning about investing in brands with purpose,” says Jodie Fried, co-founder of Armadillo. Of the brand’s artisan and weaver community (shown here), she adds, “We consider them extended family.”

Being confined to our spaces like never before has shed light on every facet of our homes: the look, the function, the comforts— and with renewed potency, the intentions behind the items we live with. While consumer activism gained fresh credence in 2020, a rising tide of young design brands have been defining a new model of ethical production at scale for years.

Unable to find fine, handmade rugs that aligned with their value set, Jodie Fried and Sally Pottharst founded Armadillo with community enrichment and fairtrade practices as key DNA pillars. Not a decade into business, the duo established The Armadillo Foundation, which supports free medical clinics and funds an elementary school in their weaver village in India. “We have a team on the ground and our artisans know that if they have a

financial or medical need, they can come to us,” says Fried.

For Los Angeles-based Block Shop, kinship was a similarly integral principal. Helmed by sisters Hopie and Lily Stockman, the cult favorite design studio was born on relationships Lily had developed with a family of next-generation block printers while studying overseas.

Recognizing kindred spirits in these artistic entrepreneurs, the sisters hatched plans for a graphic block print brand whose success champions wages two to three times higher than the national average and dedicates 5% of proceeds toward health care initiatives in the Jaipur artisan community. “A familial sense of decency has always been our core ethos,” says Hopie.

Like the Stockman sisters, Christina Bryant too found the spark for St. Frank,

her luxury home goods brand, while abroad.

Living in rural Rwanda, Bryant became enamored with the exquisite Agaseke baskets made in her village. So spurred a business model that works with artisans in under-resourced communities to design and produce product lines. (To date, St. Frank supports jobs in more than two dozen countries.) “We showcase traditional craft as art form,” says Bryant, adding that her Oaxacan embroidered tablecloths take four women an entire month to create.

“Our model is the opposite of exploitative.

We make a premium product that the handiwork deserves.”

As with anything shown affection, the impact is palpable. Notes Hopie, “When human care and thoughtfulness flow from creator to object, you sense that intention when you hold it in your hand.”

What inspired your approach?

With inspiration from fashion, jewelry and fine art, I created this collection of bedroom, dining and living room furniture with a deep understanding of the desires of the Hickory Chair customer. It was important that each piece have beautiful proportion and scale, a dynamic shape and be made from an interesting array of materials.

What materials will we see?

American walnut and ash along with mahogany, marble, glass and customdesigned hardware were used in the creation of the wood products.

Optional tops, finishes and Customer’s Own Hardware COH®, as well as a new Made 2 Measure™ table group provide an exciting palette ready for personalization.

The new upholstery collection includes signature chairs and sumptuous sofa and sectional groupings, as well as hand-tufted pieces.

Thomas O’Brien’s Library House started with a vision for the kitchen. Both adjacent areas can be closed off allowing the main space’s kitchen island to shine.

Inspired by an actual English table several hundred years old, the substantial island features clipped corners, lots of storage and a beautiful stone surface.

What was the starting point for the design? I love marble and the way it looks in traditional homes.

I had originally bought slabs of marble for the kitchen but on a trip to the stone yard I came across this Connemara marble I had never seen before. Sourced from the coast of Ireland, the veining reminds me of a vivid green landscape, which I knew would look lovely in the kitchen. It completely changed the space and became the total inspiration for the room.

That table is so inviting! The dining table is the ideal scale for two or four people and is an old English design that falls into the category of brown furniture no one wants anymore, but it’s kind of perfect. The way we set it up is that the cook sits in the chair, for easy access to the kitchen, and the other gets to relax on the settee, but we mix up duties all the time.

This whole area feels easy, even if it’s a bit fancy!

The backsplash transforms the space. Why a mirror? The moment the mirror went in, it changed everything. It not only opens up the kitchen but functions as a window bringing in and reflecting light, which is important in this slightly darker Library House. You can see what’s happening behind you, so the mirror acts as a tool to see the full picture.

In Thomas O’Brien’s kitchen, a custom walnut island by Aero Studios, his design laboratory, takes center stage. The Art Deco drawer pulls are from Le BHV Marais found on a trip to Paris. A Visual Comfort & Co. ceiling fixture and Galia Century stools, both collaborations with O’Brien, complete the arrangement. On the previous page, the designer’s dogs, Dally Mae and Totie, pose on the dining settee upholstered in Owls & Fruit by GP & J Baker for Lee Jofa. or some, being told they can’t do something provides all the fuel needed to prove they can. Such was the case for Ryan Patterson, CEO of Patterson Homes, whose career began with a string of “can’ts.” “I wanted nothing more than to create a company and platform from which I could learn every trade and grow to develop,” he says. And that’s precisely what he did. At just 18 years old, Patterson became the sole owner of Patterson Homes, growing the company over the past near-15 years into a premier boutique builder. “I received a scholarship from Arizona State University for football

and turned it down to start making a living and leave a legacy,” he says. Legacy indeed.

His award-winning team has made a name for itself throughout Scottsdale, Arcadia, Paradise Valley and the Phoenix areas, designing and building high-quality, luxury residences. “We like to design a timeless home with a high expectation,” he says.

“What strikes my attention is simplicity with a wow factor.” On a personal note, architecture, mountain living and creative landscapes provide ongoing inspiration for the home builder, whose pastimes include watching sports, lake days with family on his boat, and finding real estate to flip and build.

ooking back at Lauren Jacobsen’s journey to interior design, it seems every personal and professional experience has led her to this very moment. Fresh out of college, she worked as an advertising art director, creating print and television campaigns for highprofile national accounts. She then moved on to The Walt Disney Company, where, as creative director, Jacobsen oversaw the design of the licensing programs for its animated and live-action films. “Interior design was the next natural step, where I could transfer all of these skills into something tangible—creative design, color, scale, blending elements, interpreting

At the time, Columbia University’s Architectural Historic Preservation graduate program offered a Design Sector degree that focused on the reuse of historic buildings.

I’m so happy this brought me to New York. I’ve restored more than 50 townhouses here, the vast majority more than 150 years old.

Reno rule: With an addition, it’s respectful to create a clear demarcation where the old building ends and new one begins.

I will not design “fake old.” Never update: Original handrails. Solid mahogany is irreplaceable and when restored, incomparable to any other wood. Always update: Lighting and paint. Dream digs: An old Parisian apartment with high ceilings and plaster moldings everywhere. Characterful refresh: Minimize sheetrock by installing painted or unpainted wood paneling on the ceiling or walls. Finding balance: If there is an authentic detail, I’ll try hard to work around it—and not just in prewar buildings. For a current 1980s renovation, we decided that the unusual roof and double-story fireplace should stay. We’re replacing the lava-stone panels on the chimney breast with handmade tile, but decided the shape and form were important to retaining the feel of the original structure. Always chic: Authenticity.

I spend an enormous amount of time creating unique homes that sit well within their context.

Context. A new historic house’s authenticity really depends on how well it relates to its context—both natural and historical. Decoration. Never leave thinking about decoration until the end of the project— it should be right there at the beginning along with the architecture and the landscape. DESIGNER DAVID KAIHOI TELLS THE TALE OF A GRAND OLD 1810 FEDERAL THAT LURED HIS FAMILY TO THE HUDSON VALLEY.

We got the itch last April. A friend insisted we crash at his 19 th-century farmhouse in upstate New York, and that’s when my wife began aching for a country home. She always wanted a Jane Austen fantasy: an old house with good bones and stories. But it was only an abstract notion with architectural flourishes—a crackling fireplace, a proper staircase, gutsy millwork, worn floors and wavy glass windows. Maybe a kooky attic. Something rough around the edges with strong, redeemable character.

Our hearts are in New York City’s East Village, where we haven’t tired of our fifth-floor walkup. Our two kids share a bedroom and we colorfully negotiate use of a single bathroom. It’s an adventure that keeps us tight and mindful. We weren’t necessarily in a position to buy, but we love a project—and entertaining the idea had become a preferred dinner conversation. Where could it be? What might it look like? We were open to all scenarios, but that weekend directed our focus to a historic home in the Hudson Valley.

We’d ogle listings of romantic piles, sigh to ourselves and think, ‘too much work,’ or ‘too much money.’ It was heartbreaking! Death by a thousand listings. But then, one stopped us cold. You know that feeling when it starts to hurt? That’s love, I think. We fell in love.

The house was in Columbia County and since we were in the area over the New Year, we planned a drive-by; a tempt of fate. We snooped around and peeked through windows.

As we feared, it checked all boxes: history, scale and gentle layers of quirks from owners past and present. We contacted the broker for a closer look, and you know the rest. For now, the rooms are empty and the echoes couldn’t make us happier. It will be a long, slow burn, collecting stories and writing the next chapter in the history of this house. reddkaihoi.com

For Allan Rosenthal, founder of Phoenix-based Linear Fine Woodworking and a third-generation craftsman, woodworking is in his blood. Rosenthal’s grandfather, a master woodworker in Europe, forced his father into the business. Eventually, he embraced the new trade, honing his skill and craft, which ultimately saved his life during the Holocaust. Years later, he moved to America and opened a furniture store. “As a young boy, I would put handles on furniture in my father’s shop, which led to my interest in building,” Rosenthal says. Early in architect Mark A. The original chair was completely stripped down to frame and re-crafted, broken areas on base were repaired and re-finished. S

ometimes, a shift in perspective makes all the difference. That’s what made architect Hugh Knoell’s design proposal for a family’s new home in Lost Canyon stand out among the rest. Instead of positioning the house on top of the hill, he asked the owners, why not place it at the base?

“In Lost Canyon, most of the valued properties are on the hills,” Knoell explains. “But I said, ‘It’s better to look up at the desert canyon than to look down at roofs.” The owners agreed—and they weren’t just enticed by the seclusion that came with it. They also loved Knoell’s vision to keep the architecture in harmony with the landscape, respecting the natural patterns of the canyon waterways and its flora and fauna.

Working with builder Joe Costello, Knoell created a flat-roofed abode with no visible masonry. The simple stucco exterior recedes elegantly into the terrain, positioned to maximize the sun in winter and minimize it in summer. Bridges and walkways allow for the flow of storm water beneath the home, while the floor, wall and ceiling materials are continuous from the inside out, framing the mountain views.

Interior designer David Michael Miller notes that it was important to him that the interiors reflected Knoell’s architectural vision. To mirror the soothing simplicity of the façade, Miller brought in local firm Woodesign to fabricate millwork in warm combinations of rift white oak and rift walnut, achieving an organic richness with clean lines.

Throughout the abode, a color palette of camel and sand draws visual ties with the topography of the desert outside. In the living room, a smooth wall of stacked travertine frames the fireplace; it’s a wellexecuted exercise in muted yet cozy minimalism.

Overhead, sandblasted plain-slice Douglas fir lines the ceilings, countering the cooler tones of the concrete floors.

“Sometimes with modern and contemporary architecture there’s the risk of the interior feeling unfriendly, stark or polished to the point where you don’t feel any richness,” Miller says. “There could be beautiful objects and clean space, but it’s

really not a place to live. So I wanted the interiors to be warm and comfortable—a place where you want to sit down and relax.” While keeping things mostly natural and minimal, he injected a few surprising visual moments throughout. In the kitchen, an earthy midcentury-style dimensional backsplash adds a tactile quality to the space, while a sculptural lighting fixture and vibrant artwork in the dining room inject cheerful irreverence.

Landscape architect Jeff Berghoff saved as many indigenous native trees as possible from the excavation and replanted them strategically throughout the property to ensure it blended well with the terrain of the canyon’s basin. Ironwood trees line the driveway and front entry walkway, while blue palo verdes frame the latter. Berghoff also planted desert cactus species like teddy bear cholla and prickly pear alongside black dalea, indigo bush and pink fairy duster.

To ensure the fusion of interior and exterior, covered patios extend from many of the rooms. “It’s important to shade in the desert,” Knoell says. “So all the overhangs are designed so they let the winter sun in and keep the summer sun out.” The patios allow for different experiences depending on the time of day and year, highlighting the myriad desert scents and sounds and the mesmeric color changes of the canyon. In an especially magical design touch, a bridge extends from the main bedroom to the remote observation deck, where the family can while away the evenings gazing at the galactic expanse above.

And that’s not even this home’s most striking feature. That accolade, Knoell and Miller agree, belongs to the entryway. Though the concrete retaining walls serve to protect the house from the flow of storm water, they also form a sculptural part of the south entry courtyard. In the spirit of a traditional oasis, a dramatic reflective water feature leads to the front door, through the sunlightdrenched interiors and out to the pool, culminating in a magnificent tableau of desert and mountains.

It’s a fitting end to the journey, since the landscape is what captured the owners’ hearts when they first viewed the lot. “It was very important that they have an intimate connection with the desert—they just wanted to be immersed in it,” says Miller. “And that’s how this house came to be.”

T

here’s a distinctive pleasure experienced only when one returns home after a long journey—that soothing transition from the new and exciting to the warm and familiar. This was what a pair of Paradise Valley empty nesters craved.

Avid travelers, they wanted a house that they could leave without worry, but also one that felt personal—a space that would welcome them back after their adventures away.

But their sprawling, more formal adobe they’d recently finished didn’t suit this concept. “We wanted something that would simplify our life greatly,” shares the wife. “We were happy to trade a manicured acre for low maintenance. And it was exciting to start with a clean slate.”

This shift in perspective posed an engaging challenge for designer Lissa Lee Hickman, who the couple again recruited after collaborating on their previous property. “It was about 12 months after we finished the first one that I received the call,” recalls the designer. “I was surprised and happy that they wanted to start the process again so soon.”

With a property overlooking a lush greenbelt as their new location, Hickman knew this project required a dressing down of the couple’s former style to create the ease they were looking for. “The earlier residence had lots of crown molding and millwork,” says the designer. “So this one needed to feel more approachable, light and airy.”

They soon gravitated toward the soft, cozy tactility of a modern cottage, which Calvis Wyant—the design/build team behind their former home—returned to execute. To accommodate for the neighborhood’s 14-foot roof height limit, architectural designer Gary Wyant designed a low-profile structure with simple lines, and, as he explains, “created interest using different textures such as painted brick, wood and stucco.”

More modern strokes came from the steel awnings and dark-framed, large-format windows and entrance door filtering plenty of natural light to illuminate the interior. The signature exterior brickwork was covered in a hand-applied mortar wash. “This requires a lot of technique so it doesn’t look contrived,” notes project manager Scott Edwards. “But it was fun to make something new look timeless.”

This subtle approach to craftsmanship continues inside, where instead of ornate finishes,

the team favored fresh white walls and ceiling beams that were stained to match the French white-oak floors. Hickman also employed more white oak for the clients’ bath cabinets to make the Carrara marble in there feel less cold and formal. “The natural reeded oak helps warm things up,” she observes.

Warmth and simplicity also guided the furnishings, defined by streamlined silhouettes and a creamy white color scheme with accents of light grays and pale blues. Hickman then brought in natural textiles like custom wool rugs and linen sofas to add a supple plushness that feels both approachable and elegant. “These are fabrics that will withstand the test of time—and,” she adds laughingly, “hold up against future grandkids.”

Though smaller in scale, the home also needed to serve the owners’ personal passion for hosting.

“We like to entertain more intimate groups,” explains the wife. This meant an expansive kitchen, where conversations with mingling guests could coincide with cooking. Hickman envisioned this space in “classic white, but softened a little with the natural, rift-cut oak on the island.”

A custom stainless steel hood and quartzite counters specially honed for the project infused a personalized quality.

To create more fluid gathering spaces, the open floor plan centers around a great room that opens up to the patio and backyard, which was landscaped by Brandon LaCombe. “The indooroutdoor living space gives them that feel they were looking for,” notes Wyant. Through the French doors, guests can filter around the alfresco dining area and seating nook surrounding the fire pit, or wander back inside, where the built-in bar has become a favorite place for cocktails. “My husband likes to face our friends and family when he’s serving them,” says the wife. “So that’s been a fun little aspect to play with.”

These little details help assemble spaces that are more suited to the couple’s comings and goings.

It’s become a self-sustained, yet inviting place that feels both cozy enough for an impromptu, candlelit dinner by the fireplace on Valentine’s Day and generous enough to host family and friends for their daughter’s holiday engagement party. “This house just fits us,” shares the wife about life in their new home. It is, as Hickman says, “a place that says, ‘Sit down and stay a while.’ ”

To satisfy their craving for a smaller footprint with all the creature comforts in their new Paradise Valley home, a couple turned to designer Lissa Lee Hickman and architectural designer Gary Wyant. The entry provides a gracious moment of pause, with a Circa Lighting chandelier, a Robert James console from Palavela Home and a Formations bench covered in Holly Hunt fabric.

Warm wooden beams and a Texan limestone fireplace fabricated by Cantera Stone Imports combine to make an inviting living room, where Hickman favored seating “with cleaner lines. No rolled arms. Nothing too formal.� An A. Rudin armchair and sofas from John Brooks perfectly fit the bill.

BY LAYER In her acrylic paintings and paper clay ceramics, Phoenix-based artist Loren Yagoda explores lines, form and texture.

or some, the path to becoming an artist is a straight line—think of a pint-size Pablo Picasso painting Le Picador as a boy. For others, it’s a more meandering affair, whereby the process of making art provides a second or third act in an already rich life. Phoenix-based painter and ceramicist Loren Yagoda sits in the latter camp.

When she was 11, Yagoda left her Michigan home to attend a small boarding school in Tucson for health reasons. “Because I was sick a lot as a child, I was often put in bed with art projects, so I was always creative,” she says.

After graduation, she attended college before going on to study interpretive dance under the late Barbara Mettler, jétéing under the stars in a space designed by a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright. The experience awakened her senses not just to the power of movement but also the impact of great architecture and design. Still, it wasn’t until age 40 that she pursued a visual arts degree, receiving her BFA from the Memphis College of Art. Today Yagoda sees a correlation between those early days as a dancer and her current studio work. “In both there’s a focus on form, shape and freedom,” she says. “I’ve often mused that I dance my lines onto the canvas.”

Committing those lines is the first step in a creative process she calls “20 layers of torture,” since a single painting has that many iterations in its evolution. Inspired by her fondness for architectural forms, some of her works resemble minimalist site plans; others are studies in repetition. Stripes, both freeform and precise, are a favorite motif. She cites Agnes Martin as an influence, and her paintings draw comparisons to Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline.

A similar monochromatic aesthetic guides Yagoda’s ceramics. Employing the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, she’s interested in the beauty of an object’s perceived flaws. Her paper clay shallow bowls and figurative works take hours to build. For the bowls, she hand-rolls the coils, modeling them into the circular base of the vessel. “I like the coils and ragged edges to show, then I use washes to dirty them up,” she explains.

Soon Yagoda’s work will reach a broader audience: She has an upcoming show at Grace Renee Gallery and is also part of RH’s roster of artists participating in Portia de Rossi’s art curation startup General Public. A series of her paintings will be reproduced as synographs, which use 3-D printing technology to mimic layered paint. For an artist who’s spent her career exploring texture, it’s a fitting new venture.

A design team cooks up a spectacular modern mountain home.

T

he way architect Mark Candelaria sees it, building a house is a lot like preparing a gourmet meal.

Both involve assembling the right high-quality ingredients that, when expertly combined, evoke a feeling of great satisfaction.

Perhaps most importantly, both endeavors are much more enjoyable when friends are involved.

That was the situation when Candelaria, designer Anita Lang and builder John Schultz joined forces to design and build a modernist home perched high above Paradise Valley. “We were all on the stage together jamming, and it was a lot of fun,” Candelaria says bringing yet another art form to mind. “The client picks up on that energy.”

That sense of zeal is clearly reflected in the outcome, a contemporary two-level abode clad with stucco, smooth tile and textural black-opal schist with flecks of mica that sparkle in the bright desert sunshine. It couldn’t be more different from the clients’ previous hacienda-style residence. But, says Lang, “They were intrigued by the idea of a modern mountain home.”

Adds Schultz, “The owners wanted the house to feel like it belonged there.” So Candelaria planned the abode to be perfectly positioned to capture the views of Camelback Mountain. To prepare the site for construction, Schultz made cuts as high as 30 feet up into the rock and then drilled 250 rods to pin the stone into place. It was well worth the monumental effort. With panoramic vistas on one side and a far more intimate view of the mountain’s cleft stone on the other, “It feels like the house really evolved from the location,” says Schultz.

The architecture creates two wonderfully different experiences, Lang notes: one of vastness and one of intimacy. She used these encounters to guide the materials, furnishings and textures within each room. A spectacular display of this thoughtful approach is the great room, a cavernous space with tall, walnut-clad ceilings and black leathered granite floors. To honor the room’s scale, Lang placed a large custom sofa and a quartet of walnut-framed chairs in front of a floor-to-ceiling granite fireplace. “The rich, warm walnut color is a beautiful juxtaposition to the cooler grays,” Lang says, pointing out that

the ceiling’s 2-inch planks make it appear more modern and interesting. “The design is very pulled back—a study in editing.” That’s also true for the adjacent open kitchen, which features simple lacquered cabinets in a satin gray. The velvety finish is an ideal complement to the monolithic marble island with graphic gray veining and a unique beveled edge. “Even though there’s a lot of movement, it doesn’t feel overwhelmingly busy in the space,” Lang says.

The dining room is equally subdued, allowing the zen garden designed by landscape firm Greey|Pickett just outside to take center stage.

Surrounded on two sides by tall glass doors that pocket into the wall, the space elicits the sense of alfresco dining, albeit at a contemporary table with elegant leather chairs. In the corner, a pair of handcrafted black metal sculptures adds dimension and plays off the native desert plants.

It’s one of the many ways the design team married the inside and outdoor spaces. The walnut ceilings flow past the envelope of the building. And the black opal schist defines not only the exterior but also a long, curved feature wall that leads to a stunning stairway with a glass railing that leads to the lower level. There, the bespoke wine cellar serves as a stunning backdrop for a cozy family room furnished with a dark blue leather sectional sofa and a channeled cognac leather bench in front of a low slung fireplace that combines black granite and travertine.

Every material used in the home, from the granite floor to the walnut ceiling, was deliberate, emphasizes Lang. “We wanted consistency and harmony,” the designer says. “Simplicity is luxury, and that was guiding me. Every choice was made with specific intention.”

Naturally, that includes the final celebration.

To commemorate the end of the 18-month project, Candelaria threw his clients a party in their new abode late last year. As music played and wine flowed, the architect, who hosts a virtual monthly cooking show on Instagram Live, prepared a seafood paella dinner that the guests happily devoured. “It’s so rewarding to share in the experience of ‘living’ in the home you designed for your client,” he says. “It’s nice to see and be a part of the what lies beyond the finish line.”
