THE COMEBACK OF THE LUTHER COMMUNITY Tradition, defined as the transmission of customs from generation to generation, not only brings together a community, but also creates a sense of inclusion for each and every individual who is participating. What makes Luther so special is its sense of community, which ultimately stems from our school's traditions. Some of the Luther traditions include chapel, LIVT, candle light, winter formal, LIT, all college, and service day. These events continually serve as times for our student body to come together and enjoy each other's presence. However, due to Covid 19, the Luther traditions had been taken away. Not only were the Luther students not allowed to step within six feet of one another from March of 2019 - January of 2021, but we were also unable to come together as a student body to take part in communal events such as Winter Formal or All College. With that being said, it is now the 2022-2023 school year, the comeback year. Throughout this school year, it is of the utmost importance that students in grade eleven and twelve take on a leadership role and teach the younger years of our continuous traditions to ensure their survival. For example, we need to teach the

grades 9s and 10s the importance of coming together everyday as a congregation during chapel to gain that sense of community each and every day. Further, our presence, and involvement in continuous communal events is crucial, so that Luther traditions can continue being passed on from generation to generation to bring our community together.

W ELCOM E T O T H E L UTH ER C OMMUNITY A SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR GRADE NINES Welcome grade nines, or should I say I’m truly sorry for what you’re about to go through grade nines.

In the past month and a half, you’ve all received your first taste of what high school is, and have all started counting down the days until you turn 16 and you can drop out… I mean get your licenses!

Jokes aside, high school is fun, but can get difficult. Here are some recommendations for our newest students. Use your class time wisely. What may seem like one small worksheet will quickly turn into

an evening of chores, work , sports, and five other assignments. Keep your binder organized, and don’t let papers float around in your backpack. Study for tests earlier than the night before. Take notes even when the teacher doesn’t tell you to, and definitely take notes when the teacher does tell you to. Walk quickly and on the right of the hallways to avoid verbal abuse at the hands of older students. Don’t change who you are to make other people like you. There is a friend for everyone here. On the contrary, let yourself grow and change if it’s time; you don’t have to stay as the person you were in elementary school. Try at least one extra-curricular activity a year, and more if you have the time. Ask questions when you have them. Introduce yourself to your teachers, thank them after class, and correct

them when they get your name wrong. In other words, be respectful, and help others be respectful towards you. High school will be what you make it, so try your best, meet new people, and most importantly have fun!

THE CONFIDENCE QUEST For this Tatler edition on Capes and Comebacks, I thought it would be nice to share a sort of challenge that I recently saw online about small everyday things you can do to build your confidence. The Confidence Quest consists of doing the following actions every day for the next 4 weeks:

1. First thing in the morning, list or think about 5 things that you like about yourself, for example, your sense of humour.

2. Have a daily dance party to at least one song.

3. Looking in a mirror, give yourself at least two compliments and mean it.

4. Do something that gets out of your comfort zone, e.g., wearing an outfit that you would not usually wear or joining a new club at school!

5. Set a small goal for yourself and do it. This can range from getting your English homework done to talking to someone you want to be friends with or going to sleep before midnight.

SPORTS HIGHLIGHT The 2022 Martin-Luther King season was one of my favorite football experiences to date. On our journey this season, I made many new friends from both Martin and Luther thanks to the combined football team, which included Martin and Luther players. This season, we finished with a 3-3 record. We are all very optimistic about next year because we had a young team with many grades 9,10, and 11 players playing the majority of the season. Playing quarterback and being a leader for my high school team in my first year was a surreal experience. I grew in skill and confidence as we progressed through the year. I am very excited about how this season played out, but even more so about the coming 2023 Football season.

Luther’s cross-country season this year was both outstanding and extremely successful. The season started in early September, and it was great to see students from all grade levels come out to participate. Our first competitive meet on September 7th was extremely hot being over 30 degrees outside, but the team pushed themselves and worked hard. Luther continued to show Lion pride for our second and third meets, both of which were bitter cold and physically demanding. Our final meet took place on September 27th and was our first meet in decent weather conditions. We finished proudly after a demanding run, with three intermediate boys placing in the top ten: Victor Burden, Ashar Rizvi, and Nolan Sax, and qualified for provincials, held in Melfort, ,Saskatchewan.

Luther then represented a part of Team Regina, running a three-kilometer race at the Wapiti Valley Ski Resort.

Luther finished strongly, bringing our official cross-country season to an end. The season was also sensational in the sense of our team. Everyone on the team was outstandingly encouraging and supportive, often congratulating each other on a good race and encouraging others to run hard, especially on those cold, bitter afternoons on which there was a competitive meet. Cross-country was an excellent chance to get involved and to meet others with similar interests with training twice a week and our four meets. The team was a great chance to get involved in the Luther community, which is phenomenal in the sense of sportsmanship and inclusiveness. A special thanks to Mrs. Wilkinson and Mrs. Bollinger, who dedicated their time and effort into this year’s season. Once again, congratulations on a great season to all those who participated in the 2022-2023 cross-country season.

SPORTS HIGHLIGHT Soccer this year was a year of reviving Luther to its former glory. I remember my first year at Luther, when the Lions won victory after victory to claim both the City and Provincial championships. When the absence of soccer in the pandemic devastated the team, it was a titanic task this year to build again the ranks of Luther’s soccer. I felt it the deepest misfortune that I could bear witness to this blossoming team for only one year. Yet, it was still an euphoric year, and there are many people whom I would wish to thank for it. Here are the greatest amongst them: our captain Kai Poulin and co-captain Asutosh Thapa for their daring leadership on the field, Coaches Nick and Brayden for developing strong yet adaptable plans for our team, and above all Dr. Akulov for arranging everything and making it possible for our team to play at

T RUTH A ND R ECONCILIATION D AY

Truth and Reconciliation Day is very important to me as an indigenous person and student. Although Truth and Reconciliation Day was only made a National holiday about a year ago my family has always celebrated it. It’s a celebration and mourning period for survivors of residential school and the 60s scoop. I believe that every minority group who has ever experienced genocide and systemic racism deserves more than just a day.

Truth and reconciliation shouldn’t be just a day. We as a society should try and apply the values of truth and reconciliation in our everyday lives. What Luther did on Truth and Reconciliation should be just the begin-

ning . It was a nice start but there needs to be more done not just at Luther but in society and around the world. We can’t limit Truth and Reconciliation Day to just a day; it must become a daily thing in our lives because that is how we will become a better and safer society for not just Indigenous people but for everyone.

We must sure that everyone is accepted no matter what.

2022 MUSICAL: SISTER ACT JR Hello everyone, I hope you enjoyed watching the musical this year! My name is Lorato Okai - Brown and I play the lead role, Deloris in Sister Act. One thing that I treasure about being in a musical is its supportive and encouraging environment. To be able to come on stage and perform in front of a crowd of strangers, not only requires a confidence from within but confidence from your castmates. What makes performing easier for me is knowing that when I come off stage I have a room full of people who not only have faith in their own abilities but mine as well. Just knowing that makes me forget about the butterflies and the stage fright. Something I find so cute about this cast is that no matter how many times they hear or watch a number, they always find something positive to say about it . I love walking around backstage and hearing people compliment each others’ performances because some days I get so tired of performing but then I am reminded of how much everyone supports each other and that is what keeps me going.

2022 M USICAL : S ISTER A CT JR .

When you look up the definition of a musical you will be told that a musical is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting and dance, but in truth it is so much more than that. The musical at Luther has been a longstanding tradition that has created a space where you can be completely and utterly you. It’s a place where you can feel at peace, don’t ever have to hide, and will always be accepted just as you are. The musical has pushed me to pursue music, to pursue confidence, and to pursue friendship. I’ve found people who have easily been some of the most supporting, loving and caring people I've ever known.

Musicals are so much more than 60 minutes of play with music; it is the culmination of the story of every single person who participates. It’s the story of expression, creativity, and unbreakable connection. If you’ve never been in a musical before, or you've never tried, I urge you to. There will always be a place for you, no matter what. I hope you try and find the light that I did, because it's a light that never dims.

alongside of the cast and crew backstage this year and in previous years has been an exciting experience as I’ve gained insight into what goes on backstage of Luther's astounding musicals. This includes organizing each set in each scene, getting the cast to their places, helping the stage crew change the scenes and make sure that every little thing backstage is as perfect as can be. This year's musical has been another one to remember, in

terms of the amazing cast and teachers that have made the experience so much better!

2022 MUSICAL: SISTER ACT JR.

Participating in the musical was so fun! There are so many new people I got to meet and perform with, and overall I was really proud of the finishing product. We are so blessed to have such amazing teachers that pour their heart and soul into making a successful production. If you’ve been thinking about being in the musical next year, I say go for it!! We have so many great traditions that we get to do every year like going for supper after one of our shows, and getting sweet messages from our graduating grade 12s! Congrats to everyone who took part in making our show of Sister Act a super memorable one!!

S TUDENT SPOTLIGHT My name’s Alexandria Olfert, and I’m a competitive swimmer for the Regina Optimist Dolphins/ RODS swim team. This summer, I got selected to have the opportunity to compete for Team Saskatchewan at the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games. Swim Sask placed 6th, and overall ranked 7th. The whole experience was amazing; 10 days in Ontario, fully sponsored by Saskatchewan, competing against some of the best swimmers in Canada and meeting new people. The athletes village was stationed in the Brock University campus dorms, along with the cafeterias, campus activities and some sport venues. One of the highlights was

walking into the arena with Team Sask for Opening Ceremonies while other spectators and athletes cheered us on. The swim competition was spread across six days, the last day being the Open Water 3000 meter. My best race was the 50 meter backstroke, and I qualified for finals, ranking 9th overall. Swim Sask won the first medal for Sask at the games, and it was by a para-swimmer who won bronze. This was a great experience and probably the best week of my life. There were so many memorable moments and I’m honored to have got this opportunity.

RECIPE CORNER CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES Craving something sweet while you do homework?

Chocolate chip cookies are a must!! The recipe is from Allrecipes!

Ingredients • 1 cup butter, softened • 1 cup white sugar • 1 cup packed brown sugar • 2 eggs • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 2 teaspoons hot water • ½ teaspoon salt • 3 cups all-purpose flour • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips • 1 cup chopped walnuts Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

2. Beat butter, white sugar, and brown sugar with an electric mixer in a large bowl until smooth. Beat in eggs, one at a time, then stir in vanilla. Dissolve baking soda in hot water. Add to batter along with salt. Stir in flour, chocolate chips, and walnuts.

3. Drop spoonfuls of dough 2 inches apart onto ungreased baking sheets.

4. Bake in the preheated oven until the edges are nicely browned, about 10 minutes.

5. Cool on the baking sheets briefly before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

Voilà! Yummy chocolate chip cookies to snack on while you do your homework!!

R ECIPE C ORNER RATATOUILLE MAC AND CHEESE INGREDIENTS: • 1 cup macaroni • 2 Roma tomatoes • 2 beef sausages • ¼ cup diced white onions • ½ of a zucchini • ½ of a bell pepper • ½ cup shredded mozzarella • 1 tbsp butter • Salt, cayenne pepper, paprika, garlic powder, dried oregano leaves (for taste) Directions 1. Boil pasta until softer than al dente (15mins) (Pro tip: Adding 1 tsp of oil prevents the pasta from boiling over) 2. Drain the pasta (Pro tip: Once the cooking water has been drained fill the pot the macaroni was boiled in with cold water to further stop the cooking process and prevent the macaroni from drying out.)

3. Dice the onions, tomatoes, sausages, zucchini and bell pepper 4. In a frying pan, melt the butter on medium-low heat 5. Add the onions, then sausages and fry until the sausage browns a bit.

6. Then, add the bell peppers and zucchini and stir for a minute before adding the diced tomatoes.

7. Sauté for a few minutes, then add the seasonings for some taste.

8. Drain the cold water from the macaroni, then transfer into the pan and stir. Then spread the cheese over the mixture. ***If your pan isn’t deep enough to contain the macaroni, just drain the macaroni and transfer the sauted ingredients into the pot (or pan) containing the macaroni. **** 9. Turn off the stove and cover the pan for a minute before stirring the cheese.

GRADE 12, IN MY OWN NUTSHELL. I'm actually excited about my last year of high school because it's an accomplishment for everyone in grade 12. I am looking forward to another stage of my life after I graduate Luther, but for now I shall live this current stage and try to appreciate and enjoy it while it lasts. Going back to school has taken some time getting used to since, for me at least, it is a big change from what my daily life was like this past summer, but so far grade 12 is going okay.

Caitlyn Le: “While Grade 12 is difficult and overwhelming at times, it is rewarding to see the progress that you’ve made throughout grades 9-11 pay off.”

Sarim Uddin: “Nah, I don’t even know what I’m doing anymore but gonna graduate somehow though. Not

gonna lie, grade 12 is very fun with great peers and teachers making it a memorable year!”

GRADE 11 Morenike Ogundare: “Grade 11 so far has pushed me to my breaking point. Turns out I have a lot of them.

But Grade 11 has also brought me more friends, better relationships with my teachers and much better SRC events.”

sure to show spirit and don’t be lame! Grade nines don’t be shy! At Luther we love to cheer loud and proud!”

The Cursed Torch Many of you have heard of the “cursed torch” in our Royal Street hallway. You may receive a reminder, a voice shouting from behind, “don’t step on the torch!”, as you hustle down the hallway on your way to class. I am a faithful believer in the curse of the torch. My old friends in grade nine told me all about it and I am not taking any risks. I always make sure to leap over it, scoot myself behind one of the pillars surrounding it, or slide my feet around it

while also leaning my entire body to the side to avoid it. I have absolutely no idea where this torch came from, who designed it, what message it is trying to tell us, or even what the curse really is, yet, by all means, you will never see me step on it. It’s old. I don’t care what the crafter of this torch intended. For us it means nothing good. It has been stuck in the floor since sometime in 1926. It's probably haunted by some old ghost or something. My advice to you is to avoid it at all costs. Listen to the grade nine Ambassadors that warned you during your orientation. Trust me, they know better than anyone. Just listen. Don’t even look at it. I was told you will fail all grade 11 science tests if you stepped on it in grade 9. I was also told you might even be made fun of for stepping on it. Even if a teacher gives you the side eye or a chuckle as they watch you block the hall to get around it, or when someone tells you that it is nothing more than a stupid tradition for orientation, do not fall for it. They don’t know what we know or at least they don’t care like we care. If you want to make it through high school then follow these tips: avoid the torch; don’t ask questions; don’t think about the underlying message of social conformity that the cursed torch holds today; continue to avoid being an outlier, a weirdo; and for the sake of Pete… Do.
