Hi everyone, it’s Ginny! I’m very excited to start off the new year with our international themed edition of the Tatler! We had so many wonderful submissions.

Thank you so much to everyone who has taken the time to share their work with all of us! Special thanks to Veronica, for being so inspiring and doing a lot of work to make this come together! Thank you also to Ms. Wilkinson and Ms. Smoliak, for all of your help and support! I look forward to our next edition!

PRESIDENTIAL LETTER 2019 was an extremely successful year for Luther.

From events such as Fun Day, Multicultural Night, Winter Formal to the Christmas sweater auction the community of Luther has wholeheartedly thrown themselves into school spirit and participation. Luther raised a massive amount for charities and celebrated our cultures while doing it. Luther students performed beautiful pieces at Winter Formal and danced all night, even to subpar music. The Luther SRC would like to thank both students and teachers for bringing such energy to Luther life in 2019. If this school spirit is continued into 2020 it will be a great year. THE GIRL WITH THE TATTOOS "This portrait plays on the idea of a tattoo's nature: permanent but not hereditary. Born in Canada, and of Canadian blood, my roots influence a lot of my cultural experiences, but not all of them. I personally would say that the time I spent as a little girl in Kazakhstan shaped my character more than any amount of time in Canada. So I reflected this through the gold and blue of the national flag, and that cultural imagery --- the tattoos and the clothing."

ESL VIEWPOINT AT LUTHER , we have various international students who come from all over the world. Each of them has different life experiences from each other, especially for those students who had been living on other continents such as Asia, Africa and South America. However, some students in our school do not understand the amazing and fascinating parts of having lots of International students. Our school is just like a tiny world with people who came from all over the world and they are studying hard together to achieve their goal. Furthermore, after we graduate from Luther, our relationship net can hopefully cover the world with all the connections we have made. However, I think our school’s international activities are not popular enough among our students.

We have a huge amount of students and there were only about 55 of them at the Gingerbread Cafe. However, the first Gingerbread Cafe was pretty successful with people’s participation. One possible reason could be that sugar upped people’s zeal. After all, Luther is great at creating an international atmosphere and I believe that international activities such as the International Cafe will get better and better with students’ participation.

THE INNOCENT LIE SO ONCE UPON A TIME, specifically 3 years ago, I attended my first Prairie Land Jazz Camp. Now, being the young fool I was, I had no prior knowledge to the history and whatnot behind Jazz so, if I was told anything, I believed it one-hundred percent. As a result, I fell victim to people joking with me. One such thing I fell victim to was the “origin of jazz.” Upon doing research for this, I realized that Jazz rooted from African American communities specifically in New Orleans - which is not what I had been told. So as a result, allow me to tell you the Mark Exclusive “beginning of Jazz.” A long time ago, in New York, New York, there existed numerous marching bands around town. However, on occasion, after a long day, some of the members would go to the local pub after a gig. Now some of these band members would come out confused with their instruments after a night’s drink and think, “What on earth am I gonna use this for?” and proceed to throw their instruments to the curb. Now New York was notorious for its homeless populous as well and because of this, some of these homeless folk will pick up the instruments and attempt to learn how to use it. Now without any proper training in the art of music, the music they made was quite different from the marching bands, thus debuting the art of jazz.

MY CULTURE HAS MEANING TO ME I’VE SEEN AND experienced growth and success. I’ve witnessed how something small can grow into something meaningful. Drumming has taught me many things about life. I have learned great teachings from my ancestors that have been passed down from generations such as smudging and other forms of prayer. I am thankful for my teachers and my friends that I have shared memories with around the drum. I’ve learned the importance of myself and my Nation. I’ve learned a way to practice, and honour my culture.

The first time I had an encounter with the great teaching of drum was during my seventh grade in middle school.

My old school is a special place to me. It was an essential step in allowing my practice around a First Nations’ drum. The school is called Mother Teresa Middle School, or MTMS for short. MTMS is where I had my first experience with the drum. The school gave the students the opportunity to scrape “I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH ABOUT MY CUL- gram called Bringing Back the Bufand tan a bison hide in a profalo. The proALLY, EMOTIONALLY, AND MENTALLY.” gram consisted of first asking and then the earth and creator gifting us a bison. We then put the sacred bison down. Everything from the gifted creature is valuable was used, but specific to this program, only the hide was present. With the hide, Bringing Back the Buffalo had the students and teachers of MTMS use modern and old tools used by First Nations people to scrape the membrane and fur from the raw hide. All actions - including acquiring and scraping the hide began with some form of prayer, Smudge or Pipe ceremony. After weeks were put into preparing the bison hide, the school was able to use the hide to create a drum. All these events connect and have importance to what our drum group has become today.

When the school received the drum, Mr. Whitestar had already offered to share his gift of First Nations drumming and song making with us. In the beginning there were many of us, most just eager to learn something new. Two or three times a week there were practices. After a few weeks the program lost many people, as they lost interest. From the bunch, there were four fortunate people left; one of the four being me. For the remainder of my seventh-grade year, the three other students and I, along with our teacher, Mr. Whitestar continued practicing without the others. It took a while to get decent in the singing aspect; we practiced and practiced and practiced. The first year wasn’t very exciting. The boys and I only knew one song and we were still not that great at singing. We had a few small performances around the city.

We took any opportunity we could get to sing in front of an audience. We sang at the old folk’s homes, but rarely would we get asked to perform. Although we were not that big, we knew that a name was needed for our group. We became known as the MTMS Buffalo Boys.

The next school year, my eighth year, our little group really started to grow. New sixth-graders arrived, which meant more singers. The Buffalo Boys went from a small four-member group to nine members, plus the teacher. The four from the previous year, including me, were used to singing, so now we just had to train our newbies. They caught on fast now that there were other students singing. Alongside a decent number of new drummers, we received some dancers. The dancers were all girls and consisted of jingle and fancy dress dancers. All six CONTINUED ON THE NEXT PAGE dancers were taught and made their own powwow regalia.

MY CULTURE HAS MEANING TO ME ...CONT’D THIS TIME AROUND we started to get noticed by our community. We still went to the old folk’s home, but now we were receiving offers from companies, schools, communities, and powwows. For many companies, we opened meetings for them. For schools, we performed at events relating to Indigenous culture. Sometimes the Buffalo Boys and the dancers would go to Campion college and perform during mass. Other events relevant to our group were the Queen City parade, and WE DAY 2017, where the Buffalo Boys sang, and the dancers danced in front of maybe two thousand people. And, of course, we attended powwows which are large festivals where First Nations dancers perform and compete for prizes, and there are multiple different drum groups.

2017 was a good year for the Buffalo Boys. We learned new songs and had a lot of fun. My time in middle school ended. The new school year brought more singers. There were now thirteen men sitting around a little drum. With the new members came more opportunities. We still participated in the parade, we attended WE DAY for the second time and things only got better and better.

With the money we accumulated each year we celebrated by going out to places, most of the time to eat. But eating was not what we spent all earnings on. With what we had saved over the years we were able to purchase a new and larger drum, and new drum sticks.

My career in drumming is not over. I am still learning new things about myself. The school I had attended, and the people and opportunities I have been given, have taught me a lot. From drumming and performing, I have learned so much about my culture - more than I could have otherwise. I’ve seen change in myself, spiritually, emotionally, and mentally. Drumming has become an important practice in my life, and it is still teaching me as much today as it did in 2017. The Buffalo Boys went from a poor little novice group of amateurs and grew into a large band of brothers. The Buffalo Boys now know many songs, so much that with offers we can now accept performances right away. This has taught me that with time and dedication, anything is possible.

A SHANGHAI STUDENT’S WINTER IN REGINA FOR STUDENTS WHO are born and raised here, winters in Regina are nothing to expect. However, for me, a newcomer from Shanghai, the coldest season here is a surprise. Firstly, the snowy weather is gorgeous enough to leave a deep impression in my mind. In Shanghai, it rarely snows in winter. On the few snowy days, the snow disappears very soon. A lasting snow and the chance to experience fun winter activities are what I dreamed about all the time. What’s more, one of the biggest festivals in western culture, Christmas, is in winter. Gingerbread houses, Christmas trees and gifts are just a little part of my expectation of Christmas. This is my first winter in Regina. I ‘m sure I will find out more about Canadian culture in this white season. That’s why I am so excited about the festive season in this new city. I’m looking forward to the coldest days, and also enjoy the chill I gave already experienced.

In freezing days, staying indoors is always desirable. In the morning, I can sit by the window and watch the white fog spread over the windows, waiting for dusk to come. Getting up early is no longer a necessity for watching the sunrise because it’s

usually dark outside when I wake up. I watch the sky, from the first dawn to the moment every snowflake is stained orange by the light. Winter here is the season for writing the name of loved ones on icy windows with fingertips.

The atmosphere of Christmas is not only about the decorations and events, but also the anticipation of everyone. I can’t remember how many times I imagine the Christmas holidays. Moving to Canada So, the title is a bit misleading. I did not move to Canada, but my cousin Kevin did.

Kevin moved to Canada in February of 2014. Kevin is a student at Miller high school in grade nine.

Evan: How did it feel to come to Canada?

Kevin: I thought I was just visiting, but then I was exposed to the news that I was going to live here.

Evan: So, basically you thought you were just visiting?

Kevin: I mean, I don’t think my parents told me we were moving.

Evan: What preparations were made to come to Canada?

Kevin: I really didn’t do much. All I did was say goodbye to my friends and teachers, then we all met at the airport and said a final goodbye. And I packed my bags.

Evan: Do you remember anything you didn’t like on the airplane?

Kevin: I mean, there is nothing you can do, so it can get boring just watching movies and such. I also hated the small space I had. Other than that, nothing really much to complain about.

Evan: How did it feel to land in Canada? What were the differences compared to China?

Kevin: It’s funky.

I screamed for a while.

Evan: How are Chinese schools and Canadian schools different?

Kevin: The teachers here do not hit us.

We also get less homework. I also did not have many friends in China back then, and recess time was also short.

Evan: BRO I WANNA HUG YOU RIGHT NOW.

Evan (After he hugs Kevin): What was your schedule at Chinese school?

DID YOU KNOW? A stranger: “Do you speak Indian?”

Me: “Uhhh no, because it’s not a language!!”

“Indian” is not an actual language! It refers to Indian people or things. There are about 22 different major languages and about 2,000 minor languages and dialects in India. Major languages include Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Urdu, Punjabi, and, obviously, English. So if you meet an Indian, please do not ever ask them if they speak “Indian.” It offends us!

Tamil is one of the oldest languages in the world. Many people aren’t aware of how old it is and some don’t even know it exists! Tamil can be classified as the language of the Dravidian civilization. Tamilians live all around the world, mostly found in Tamil Nadu, a state in India, as well as in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, and Fiji.

Tamilians have many different types of ancient foods such as Idlies. If you ever want to try this meal, I recommend a restaurant called “Dosa and Curry Garden” in Regina. Order “sambhar and idly”. It is the best combination, I’m telling ya!

As a Tamil girl, I am proud! I officially learned to speak Tamil when I was 7 years old, but I understood the language when I was 4. Even now, I get my words mixed up. Learning my mother tongue inspired me to learn other languages when I moved to Denmark from the US. I learned Danish. I decided to continue to study German and French here in Canada.

Did you know Tamilians celebrate Thanksgiving in January, which is called Pongal? Do you also know why it is celebrated in January? If you want to know, come speak to me! Thank you for reading!

CONFESSIONS OF AN INTERNATTIONAL STUDENT AS AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT, I have received a higher-quality education than my peers in my country, but I also bear the psychological pressure that my peers do not . When people communicate between two countries, it is not just the language that creates friction, but also the cultural and historical background. All in all, the communication I experience every day is not so much communication as the shrinking of the fusion of two nations across the ocean.

I am happy here, because I have the right to choose my own future, although this seems minor here, it is indeed unattainable in China. However, many times, I wonder, why did I come across the ocean and feel happy only because of the basic treatment here? I don't know and don't want to know. The only thing I can do now is to meet the expectations of my parents. Although some people only talk about this free realm, they can choose what they want. They don’t have to think too much about their parents’ feelings, because they must have considered it before sending you. That's it. But I don't think so. My parents did everything they could to get me a better education, and I should thank them by meeting their expectations and show that their efforts have not failed. Many of my classmates feel that I am too busy and I should be relaxed, but I don't have time. As an international student, you should have put in more effort than others to make up for language and cultural differences. So please give foreign students some time. Although they may seem out of place here, they are all be working hard in order to integrate here.

As an international student, choosing between cultures is also a problem. Every civilized group has its own mode of life. Of course, no culture is perfect, but when people have the right to learn the advantages of two cultures and improve their native culture, no one really dares to make a choice. The gap between Chinese culture and Canadian culture is so great. The Chinese culture has a profound heritage, and it is modest and prudent in its actions, smooth and gentle in life, and restrained and modest when encountering problems; but Canadian culture is more open and values freedom and equality. If you want traditional Chinese parents to accept Canada ’s concept of openness and freedom, it is difficult, because two completely different cultures cannot perfectly blend in such a short time. Therefore, some international students, including myself, are facing this choice — change or not, innovate or not. This kind of thing will probably take time to break-in. Is it too sad to think so much now? In short, I am very fortunate that I am a student of Luther, because this is a relatively friendly and inclusive group. I also thank everyone for their tolerance, and I will try my best to integrate myself here. 作为留学生，我接受着比同龄国人优质的教育，却也承担着同龄国人无需承担的心理压力。当两个国家之间的人交流时，所产生 摩擦的不只是语言，更多的是文化与历史背景。总而言之，我每天所经历的交流，与其说是交流，不如说是两个横跨大洋的民族 的交融的缩小化。在这里，我是幸福的，因为我拥有选择自己未来的权利，虽然这看似谨小慎微，确实在国内不可求的。很多时 候，我都在想，为什么自己横跨大洋而来，却只因受到了这里基本的待遇而感到幸福呢？我不知道，也不想知道。我现在唯一可 以做到的只有达到父母的期望，虽然有人说到了这个自由的地界就可以选择自己想要的，不必再过多考虑父母的感受了，因为他 们在送你来之前肯定已经考虑到这点了。但我不这么认为。我的父母尽他们所能让我接受到了更好的教育，而我就应该用达到他 们的预期来告诉他们，他们的努力没有落空。很多本地同学都觉得我太累了，应该愉悦自己，但是我没有时间。作为一名留学 生，本就应该付出比其他人更多的努力以弥补语言与文化上的不同。所以，请给留学生们一点时间，虽然他们可能看上去与这里 格格不入，但是他们一定都在为了融入这里而以某种方式努力着。 作为留学生，文化之间的选择也是一道难题。每个文明群体都有自己的生活模式，当然，没有一种文化是完美的，但是当人有汲 取两种文化的优势并对自己原生文化进行改进的权利时，却未必有人真的敢于做出改变了，更何况中国文化和加拿大文化的差距 有如此之大。中国文化底蕴深厚，注重行事谦虚谨慎，做人圆滑温和，遇事隐忍谦让；但是加拿大文化更开放且注重自由平等。 如果想要中国的传统家长接受加拿大较为开放自由的理念是很难的，因为两种截然不同的文化应该不可能在短时间内形成完美的 交融，因此，一部分留学生包括我本人也正面临着这种选择，改变与否，创新与否。这种事大概还需要时间来磨合吧，现在想这 么多会不会太多愁善感了呢？总之，我很庆幸自己是Luther的学生，因为这是一个相对友善而包容的集体，也感谢一直以来大家 的包容，我会尽力让自己融入这里的。

ONCE UPON THE DEAD OF NIGHT once upon the dead of night,

upon his stride, he gazed at his feet.

soon, a shrieking noise could be heard,

upon the coldest of days;

he sauntered on every square tile;

he would pay his dues in full.

was a city of steel, it was ever so bright.

wary of each step on the concrete.

although, he was spared by the black bird.

steel had erected from the ground,

as his journey came to a halt,

his senses came to him at that moment.

and had touched the heavenly skies.

a shine of scarlet, deemed vile.

a loud blare echoed in the mobile,

it was a sight to behold, ‘twas spellbound.

powerless, the bright light was left in exalt.

it scorned the boy of errant.

the land of lights shone with brilliance, and had vanquished the shadow. once more, man bested the dark since existence. as the night grew darker,

a boy laid walking on the street of snow. the path ahead grew, ever so farther. the boy suppressed the numbness, the wintry winds unfazed him.

the sanguine light imposed its will, on the boy, a lamb among wolves.

he computed in a fleeting moment, fearful.

deceptively, the boy was put in a lull.

he thought, he was to blame.

his eyes deceived him that fateful hour, like a bat who soared above the moonless woods.

as he walked sporadically,

soon, it would all turn sour. as thoughts clouded his mind, he walked without heed, one fateful time.

the boy's cheeks were as white as the snow, they were bloodless.

from afar, a roaring power without kind.

the boy was heedful of every error,

a light accompanied by a machine of steam,

upon this night of grim. as he pondered, perfection was fairer.

the boy scurried along in great shame.

ill tempered as a bull. the metal carriage held supreme.

his faults had clouded his contemplation, it had crushed his spirit amply. the blood coursing through him was lively. his forebears called to him in absolution; his rosy face with glee. at that moment, he attained inner peace, he realized what he became.
