Create Your Lasting Legacy Luther College is well known for its tradition of producing top graduates in every way. During my 25-year career as a university professor, I could always identify Luther College High School alumni. It was evident in their confidence and their ability to communicate. In my current position as President, I have had the great pleasure of speaking with hundreds of our high school alumni and they all say the same thing: “I learned that at Luther.” I am pleased to share with you that our senior leadership has a strategic plan in place. This plan will ensure our students continue to receive a superior education; one that is rooted in the education of the whole person—intellectually, emotionally, spiritually and physically. Luther College High School will continue to be an amazing place, as it is now, where students reach their full potential. There will continue to be a strong sense of community.

Luther students will also have a unique insight on religious thought and tradition because of our Christian context. This will be more important than ever in an increasingly diverse nation. This is also part of our international strategy, giving graduates a greater understanding of their role as global citizens. To help secure this exciting future, my wife Joanne and I decided to include Luther College in our will. It felt great! In a way, this means a part of who we are as a family will continue into the future. I invite you to join us and consider a gift to Luther College in your will. A Cornerstone of Commitment & Community Much of the legacy of Luther College is easy to see – the historic buildings, the beautiful grounds and recent addition of modern facilities. The part of Luther’s legacy that you can’t see is even more important – community and commitment. Our founders came together with a vision to build an exceptional school offering rigorous education focused on the whole person – intellectually, emotionally, physically and spiritually. Dr. Rex Schneider embodied this legacy. During his remarkable 37-year service as Luther College’s Principal, he established our school’s presence in the province and shared Luther’s mission with our community for an entire generation. Morris Anderson, another long-serving Luther Principal and later President, remembers meeting Dr. Schneider and his wife Elsa at a reception. Morris recalls: “They had commitment and a dream of what they wanted to have happen at Luther College. There’s no doubt that they established what we stand for today.”

That conversation with Dr. Schneider eventually brought Morris Anderson to join the faculty of Luther College. When asked to reflect on his time as Principal and President, Morris immediately highlights the commitment of the entire community to Luther’s purpose. “One of the greatest gifts that I received was the unconditional support from the Board of Regents, teachers, staff and students.” This spirit of community and commitment continues to be a strength of Luther today. Perhaps the most powerful commitment our community members make is by arranging to leave a gift in their wills. When a member of the Luther family makes a donation to our school, it is a strong endorsement of the principles for which we stand. As Morris Anderson says, “It’s a testament to the commitment of our alumni, to the relevance of Luther College and to the quality of education received here.”

A Family Legacy Karl & Kathy Tiefenbach Kathy Tiefenbach will never forget helping their oldest son Ricky complete his Luther College application. He came to the question: “Do you have any other relatives who have gone to this school?” The entire house erupted in laughter. Practically every living relative — aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents — had gone to Luther. Kathy and her husband had both attended. Karl’s family has a deep connection that stretches back to the very early years at Luther in the 1920s and 1930s. Kathy grew up near the school on Dewdney Avenue and she and her siblings all loved their time at Luther.

Both Karl and Kathy fondly recall their student years and value the life-long lessons they learned. They were delighted when all three of their children also decided to attend Luther College. And they were thrilled to learn that the commitment to students hadn’t changed one bit. With the next generation of Tiefenbachs at Luther, Karl and Kathy became more involved, volunteering and supporting the school financially. Over time, Karl and Kathy could see that their connection was rooted in more than their family history with Luther. There was a profound sense of shared values and ideals. And that’s why the Tiefenbachs ultimately decided to arrange a gift in their will for the College. Asked what was most important to him when he considered a gift in their will, Karl said: “This is a school where kids, who are wanting to be challenged academically and other ways, can go and be themselves and grow. I want to keep that going.” Kathy adds: “Everyone in each generation has worked so hard to keep it going; I feel like this is a way to honour that. I think that Luther College has served each generation so well.” When Karl and Kathy's bequest is realized in the future, they will carry on their family tradition of being connected to Luther College. And more importantly they will celebrate the values and ideals that are most important to them.

Trusted Stewards Luther College has a proud tradition — stretching more than 100 years — of careful financial stewardship. Our staff’s prudent management is overseen by our Board of Regents who strategize with the senior leadership, faculty and alumni to ensure that the College's resources are wisely allocated. An independent auditor also verifies the College's financial statements annually. These statements are always available electronically or by mail.

A Special Bond Walter & Greg Posehn In 1947, Walter Posehn moved in to the Boys’ Dorm at Luther College to begin high school. He was proud to attend, and also very grateful. He had grown up on a farm near Regina during the Dirty Thirties and was a teenager during the war years. Walter greatly appreciated the education he received and the values he learned at Luther. He spoke often about the social skills he gained and valued the lifelong network he made there — a group of confidantes he knew he could always rely on. Years later, Walter’s job required him to move overseas. Faced with a decision about where his youngest son, Greg, would complete his high school, Luther College was the natural choice.

Greg soon developed the same affection for Luther as his father. Although the whole family is very close, he felt this was a special bond with his dad. Greg’s two brothers and the entire Posehn family also understood how important Luther was to Walter. He had always credited his formative experiences at Luther College for the good life he enjoyed. When Walter passed away, it came as no surprise that he had left a gift in his will to Luther. All of Walter’s children were happy to learn that their dad would continue to be a part of Luther's future. Greg and his siblings were also proud to know that the values and ideals Walter cherished would live on for the next generation of Luther College students. Following his father’s example, Greg has arranged a special gift in his will. It’s another testament to the special bond father and son share with Luther College.

Frequently Asked Questions How much of my gift goes towards fundraising operations? None. The Development Office at Luther College is funded through the base budget of the College. 100% of your gift goes where you direct it. Do I have to give a certain amount? No, Luther College is grateful for gifts of any size. Benefactors have left to Luther College a set dollar amount or a percentage of their estate. We are thankful for all these gifts. What are the implications to leaving a gift to Luther College in my will? Giving to a registered charity like Luther College can help your heirs with tax issues in your estate.
Do I have to direct my gift to a specific program? You may choose a specific area, or you can give Luther College’s Board of Regents the flexibility to direct your gift to the College in a general way or what we call an 'undesignated gift'. The only important factor in making a gift in your will is a desire to help future generations of Luther College students. Are there other types of special gifts that can also help as I make future financial plans? Yes, there are several ways you can support Luther College using special types of gifts like publicly traded securities, life insurance or an RRSP/RRIF. Please contact our office for more information.
What is the suggested wording for my gift? It is very simple and easy to include Luther College as a beneficiary in your will. Here is sample bequest language that you can share with your lawyer: To give a specific amount: “I give to Luther College, Regina, the sum of $_______ to be used for any purpose approved by the Board of Regents of Luther College, Regina.” To give a portion of the remainder of the estate once specific bequests are paid: “I give to Luther College, Regina, ____% of the residue of my estate to be used for any purpose approved by the Board of Regents of Luther College, Regina. “
